Our
VISION
To lead the way to a Jewish community where everyone lives with dignity, security, and hope.
For Jewish Family Service, and the rest of the world, 2020 was a year unlike any other because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our team was on the front lines, responding to the essential needs of our community. When we could not meet in person as we normally would, we organized virtual activities through our Center for Holocaust Survivors, Russian Jewish Cultural Center, and Barbash Family Vital Support Center to help prevent isolation. We continued counseling through telemedicine appointments. We continued to serve Holocaust survivors and other older adults by providing home care, masks, and essential supplies. We fed more families, prevented more evictions, and repaired more furnaces during the cold winter. We could not have done this without an incredible professional team and support from the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati, The Jewish Foundation of Cincinnati, and The Jewish Home of Cincinnati, as well as individual donors and volunteers—all of whom are investing in our mission of strengthening lives in times of need.

Gennady is a Holocaust survivor and immigrant from Ukraine. Jewish Family Service taught Gennady and his wife English and helped them find education and work in the United States. JFS built community and support for them through the Russian Jewish Cultural Center. During COVID, JFS has provided critical support and connection, as their children live far away.

JFS was behind us—always, always, always.
“
We’re here for them so they don’t have to walk alone on that journey.
”
As it became more clear the pandemic would impact our community long-term, Jewish Family Service moved quickly to create a safety net and central resource for those struggling because of COVID-19. Convened by the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati and The Jewish Foundation of Cincinnati, Jewish Family Service built the COVID-19 Community Hotline remotely in just four days—a project that would typically take months—using the expertise and intake platform of AgeWell Cincinnati.

Miro lost his job due to COVID-19. Three months behind in rent and utility bills, he turned to Jewish Family Service. JFS got Miro some immediate help with his bills. We helped him look for more permanent work, find a less expensive apartment, and get support from our food pantry. Miro is still struggling to get by, but JFS is working alongside him to get him back on track.
