Call Me “Breaux”

A

little over a year ago, I wrote about how our kids were taking music lessons and having fun learning to play and sing various popular songs. They are now into music more than ever before, and a lot has happened in a year. In case you are hearing about this for the first time, Peyton plays guitar and sings. Audrey plays drums and piano, but she insists that drums are her number one. The two of them have come a long way over the last year. For starters, they formed a band and decided to officially name their two-person “brother and sister” duo Call Me Breaux. When we discussed their name choice, both Audrey and Peyton explained that people have called them by their last name (pronounced “bro”) their entire life – especially in sports – so it just makes sense for a band name. When my wife and I realized how much they liked singing and performing, we started to gradually convert our dining room into a small music studio. On any given day, you can often hear some type of music being performed by one or both of them. And every once in a while, something magical happens when they come together and play their growing set of songs. It’s fun to be preparing dinner and hear your kids jamming out in the other room. Who needs a radio when you can get live performances inside your house daily? And although they love to play music for the pure sense of accomplishment, now they’ve experienced the thrill of performing live on stage. Last month, they were invited to play a set at the world-famous Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood. A couple of weeks later, they played the House of Blues in San Diego. This was particularly special for them because quite a few of their friends were at the show. They made it clear to me that having their friends in the audience was the coolest thing ever! It’s a pretty crazy thing to stand in the audience and watch your kids (ages 14 and 12) get up on stage in front of a crowd. As a parent, I experience a wide range of emotions. I’m nervous for them. I’m proud of them. And I’m amazed at their determination and willingness to put themselves out there. So far, they’ve only played cover songs. But recently, they have decided that writing and producing their own original songs is where they want to go. They said that it would be awesome to hear their songs playing on the radio one day, so now they are more determined than ever to make this happen. A special thank you to The Fine Tune Academy for continuing to teach music theory to our kids, to Studio West for providing a great local professional recording atmosphere, and to family and friends (you know who you are) that offer amazing support for their music journey.

at-a-glance Name: Jacqueline Elaine Jones (18) School: Pacific Ridge School Grade: 12 Parents: Roxanne Jones and Mark Jones Sibling: Laura Jones (16) Favorite Places in 92008/92010: Downtown Carlsbad, Café Topes, The Point Beach

ackie Jones is finishing up her senior year at Pacific Ridge High School where she has been on the varsity volleyball team all four of her years there while also participating in club volleyball. Jackie originally started dabbling in the sport at age 10 in order to have one-on-one time with her mother, who had also played high school volleyball. All her years of volleying have paid off, because Jacqueline was accepted to play volleyball for Claremont McKenna College, and she exclaimed, “I’m so excited to go there and further my academic and volleyball career.” It may seem as if Jackie was destined to become a volleyball dynamo, but she actually tried a lot of different sports as a kid. These days Jackie has other outlets that fascinate her besides volleyball. For example, she is passionate about photography, and remarked, “It allows me to express my creativity.” She also enjoys traveling, and shared, “I love exploring new places and learning about new cultures. I have already been to six different countries so far, but I always like coming back to Carlsbad!” Her favorite part of living in Carlsbad is not only the weather, but also, as Jackie said, “Because there are so many things to do, like eating at great restaurants or going to the beach.” When she isn’t at her local haunts, Jackie relishes her time at school. “Pacific Ridge is such a close-knit community that is so supportive of everyone and there are so many opportunities to grow and be a leader,” she said. At school, Jackie’s favorite subject is English, and she proclaimed, “I really like to write and analyze texts.” Jackie hopes to work in either marketing/ advertising or magazine journalism in the future. She has rounded out her education by doing volunteer work for the ARC, a center for those with intellectual/developmental disabilities, as well as for TERI, an equestrian center that uses horse riding therapy to help kids with learning disabilities. Whether she’s spiking a ball, volunteering, traveling, or just relaxing in Carlsbad, Jackie manages to handle all of her various commitments with grace and finesse. Her varied experiences have given her the skills to handle anything that comes her way, and Jackie will always manage to set herself up on the path to success. ¢

The couple lives in a three-story geodesic dome located on historic Highland Drive. According to Anne, the geodesic dome was built in 1980, during the hey-day of that particular architectural style. “On our property, we have our own mini-farm with a pig, four cats, and six chickens. In fact, we love taking our pig, Sadie, around Carlsbad. She especially loves the patio at Pizza Port,” related Anne, who also reported that she and Chad are currently building their own tiki bar and restaurant in their backyard. These two proud Carlsbad residents both have successful careers that keep them busy and fulfilled. Anne is the director of marketing and communication at Cathedral Catholic High School, her alma mater. “Before that I worked for the San Diego Padres, Clear Channel Radio/iHeart Radio, and Mighty 1090 Sports Talk Radio. Chad works at the corporate headquarters of the Electra Bicycle Company, where he is currently the technical services manager for the Electra Brand. he Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation (AHLF) recently held its Annual Tip Top Run, themed Leprechaun Dash and Bash for the Saint Patrick’s Day holiday. The walk and fun run had a 5K course and a 10K course, both ending at the AHLF’s Discovery Center in Carlsbad. The Tip Top Run was meant to celebrate the eradication of Caulerpa taxifolia, a species of seaweed, as well as raise awareness about the lagoon as one of the area’s most amazing natural resources. The event, presented by Poseidon Water, attracted more than 400 participants and 65 volunteers who braved the rainy weather to enjoy the 5k and 10k walk and run. After the run, attendees celebrated with family-fun activities, lunch from Tip Top Meats, live music, World Water Day exhibitors/vendors, and drinks for everyone. Bob Yehling won the 5K walk/run and Michelle Ven Huizen won the 10K walk/run. Approximately $30,000 was raised at the event, which will help the AHLF’s educational programs reach 10,000 elementary school children in 2018. The AHLF has been dedicated to preserving and protecting valuable natural resources. For more information about the lagoon and to see upcoming events, visit www.aguahedionda.org. ¢

MAVEN DANA EBETE HELPS PARENTS CONNECT WITH THEIR KIDS’ SCHOOL

by BECCA BARR | photo by Mark Hopkins Photography

T

hese days it’s important for organizations to have a social media presence. That’s where Dana Ebete comes in. As the social media coordinator for the Calavera Hills Elementary (CHE) PTA, Dana is able to give the school the exposure it needs. “I manage both the Facebook and Instagram accounts for the school. We post pertinent school information, reminders, and pictures of everyday life at CHE,” Dana said. “We post pictures from the fun run, spirit days like crazy hair or sock day, and field trips. Sometimes it’s a picture of a science experiment they are doing in class or advertising about special events happening at the school.” This type of volunteering is perfect for Dana’s schedule, as she works full-time. “The traditional ways of volunteering in a classroom during the day aren’t an option for me,” she shared. “Parents, teachers and even Principal Fuentes can email or text me with pictures, flyers, and information they need posted. It has helped create a connection to the school for me and my family.” Dana hopes that other parents will find connections with their own kids through her work. “As a parent, when you try to ask your child ‘what did you do today?’ we more than likely will get the typical response of ‘nothing.’ It’s nice to see occasional pictures from what they are doing and use that as a jumping-off point for conversations,” she said. Dana has lived in Calavera Hills for the past 10 years. “I enjoy living here because it is a large community, but still has some small town characteristics. The people are so friendly and you often see familiar faces on the soccer fields, grocery store, or the park,” she related. She has been married to her husband, Donn, for 10 years as well. Together they are parents to a son, Nixon, and a daughter, Naomi. Besides working full-time and volunteering for the PTA, Dana keeps busy with the children’s activities of soccer, basketball, flag football, and dance. She can often be found outdoors and exploring different places in the area. ¢

One day while conducting a business meeting at a nearby real estate company, Caroline stumbled across Fit Monkeys. Caroline liked that Fit Monkeys specialized in one-on-one personal training. Additionally, she thought Fit Monkeys use of multiple methodologies to help their clients reach their fitness goals was a fun and interesting idea. She also loved that Fit Monkeys is a family owned business run by mother daughter team Denise McClelland and Kelly McConnell. Caroline decided Fit Monkeys was exactly the studio to meet her personal training needs.

Occupation: Senior Loan Officer American Home Lenders Inc. Hobbies: Traveling, spending time with her three daughters & running along the beach with her husband Michael and their German Shepherd, Koda. Upon initial meeting, Denise McClelland (the mom in Fit Monkeys mother daughter team) put Caroline through a

complimentary fitness assessment to address Caroline's strengths and weaknesses. Additionally,

Fit Monkey

Denise gathered information about Caroline's fitness goals and interests. During each of Caroline's sessions Denise uses a combination of pilates, weight training, mat work, and cardio to help Caroline stay a fit and happy "Carlsbadian".

Denise is attentive, the work-outs are challenging and I always feel great when I leave. Denise also discusses exercises and stretches I need to work on at home.”

If the Price Is Right… by JESSICA BREAUX

Y

ou are thinking about selling your house – but only if you can get the right price! So, you find an agent that will agree to list your home for more than it’s worth. I hear this all the time, and it can be a recipe for disaster. Selling your home can be an emotional experience. And every seller wants to get the most that they can. The reason why you should not overprice your home is simple: it won’t sell. Pricing your home correctly from the beginning is critical. Buyers are more savvy than ever before. With today’s technology, it is easier than ever to spot a home that is overpriced. Many negative things can happen when an overpriced listing hits the market, including but not limited to missed buyer opportunities.

There are many aspects to selling a home for top dollar. The answer to achieving this usually comes down to three controllable variables: price, property condition, and marketing. The goal is to create a high demand for your home, and pricing it correctly can be one of the biggest influencers. Just like any other product, if careful attention is given to these variables, you will ultimately be pleased with the outcome. If you are considering making a move, you should be able to do so with confidence. Give me a call to schedule a meeting. It’s important to work with someone that you trust, and I would love the opportunity to get to know you and discuss your real estate goals. ¢
