Mother’s Day

A

lthough Mother’s Day was last month, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to write about it this issue. I have been blessed with great mothers surrounding me throughout my life. As we celebrate Mother’s Day each year, I often reflect on my childhood, teenage years, and young adulthood. I was raised by a very strong and supportive mother, and as a first grandchild, I also spent many of my younger years with my grandmother. Unfortunately, these two wonderful women are no longer with us today, but the memories and life lessons that I received from them are forever held close to my heart. Having lost my mother to a tragic automobile accident back in 2010 and my grandmother to cancer more recently, you would think that Mother’s Day would approach with some apprehension. However, much to my pleasant surprise, I’ve discovered that Mother’s Day has become one of the most meaningful holidays of the year. Even though the day typically starts with a little sadness – more like a period of reflection – it quickly turns into a very deep and significant day. Not only do I have an opportunity to celebrate the great memories surrounding my mother and grandmother, I also have the privilege of having several more fantastic mothers that surround me, support me, and make our lives more meaningful. While there are too many wonderful mothers in our friends and family sphere to mention in this letter, I would like to take a moment to recognize a few of them. First on the list, I would like to thank my wonderful wife, Jessica, for being such an awesome mother to our three kids (as well as many of the neighborhood kids). There are quite a few kiddos around the community (some adults in college now) that have grown up calling you “Momma” Breaux. We are all lucky to have you do what you do. Happy Mother’s Day, Jessica! Derrick Breaux I would also like to take a moment to send a heartfelt Publisher thank you to my mother-in-law Trish and mother-in-law Doreen. Not only are you both incredible influences on our family, but you are also wonderful grandmothers to our kids. We are all extremely happy to have you be a major part of our lives. Happy Mother’s Day, Trish and Doreen! Last but not least, I would like to recognize my sister. Not only are you a great sister, you are also a wonderful mother. I find great joy in watching the way you raise your three children, often displaying the incredibly familiar and nurturing parenting that our mother used with the two of us growing up. It warms my heart beyond words. Happy Mother’s Day, Angelique! And a belated happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers in the world (past and present) that have impacted our lives. I hope your Mother’s Day was filled with lots of hugs, special memories, love, and laughter.

Carlsbad Resident Melissa Cappuccilli Fights Her Battles With a Grateful Heart by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Mark Hopkins Photography

IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT YOUR BATTLE IS, IT’S ABOUT HOW YOU LET THE BATTLE DEFINE YOU.” AT-A-GLANCE: Name: Melissa Ann Cappuccilli Profession: Registered Nurse Community: Carlsbad Village Hobbies & Interests: Walking at the beach, jogging, skiing, paddle boarding, hiking, traveling, reading, strength training, sewing (I make my grandkids’ Halloween costumes every year!) Favorite Places to Visit in Carlsbad: The beach, Carlsbad has the best beaches!

M

elissa Cappuccilli’s practice to wake up with a grateful heart is both literal and figurative. In November 2013, Melissa received a heart transplant and has learned the deeper meaning of waking up each day humbled and grateful. Melissa’s journey began 14 years before her transplant when she was diagnosed with Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Dysplasia (ARVD) and received a surgical implanted cardiac defibrillator (ICD). As a full-time Navy nurse, her medical condition prevented her from being deployable, and she had to accept a medical retirement. The outlook was grim for Melissa. “Single mom, four kids, no career, and a medical health care team that could not tell me anything about what my future life would hold,” she explained. The next 14 years were a series of medical treatments, the last two years in congestive heart failure. “Each one of us has some battle we need to fight,” Melissa acknowledged. “As life moves on, we all have to find that new normal.” Through her own battle, Melissa raised her four children, married, and continued to stay as active as possible. She credits her husband, Matt, an active outdoorsman, for much of her health

improvements. “Matt was by my side and kept me motivated in living life even when I could only walk 15 feet and had to stop and catch my breath,” she shared. Today, Melissa’s grateful heart is the physical heart of her organ donor. “My hero, my heart donor, was a 19-year-old nursing student. Nicole had made the choice to be an organ donor when she first received her driver’s license,” she shared. “I find peace in knowing I have another day to honor my organ donor and live the life she gave me through organ donation.” Melissa’s life now includes working full-time as a registered nurse, volunteering for a number of organizations, such as WomenHeart and Donate Life, and consistently running half marathons, including the Carlsbad Half Marathon. “By sharing my story, I hope people can see they are not alone,” Melissa said. “It doesn’t matter what your battle is, it’s about how you let the battle define you. Through my experience, there are times when I let the disease define who I was and there are times when I decided how I would live my life within my new normal. Accepting my new normal always led me to a happier outcome by choosing to live life and be grateful for all that I had and not focus on my losses.” ¢

Kelly Northcott and Kae Gernandt Help the Woman’s Club of Carlsbad Thrive by BECCA BARR | photo by Mark Hopkins Photography

T

he Woman’s Club of Carlsbad (WCC) has been an important part of the Carlsbad community since 1925. Members Kelly Northcott and Kae Gernandt share the important position of Vice President of Ways and Means. “Kae and I head all the fundraising activities that WCC does,” said Kelly. “All of our fundraising activities support the philanthropic programs that the WCC supports. The fundraising events are also outreach and fellowship events. They allow women to connect with each other and use their skills and gifts in ways they may not get to do in their professional life.” The fundraising will include two big events this year. “Our major fundraiser for four years now has been the Carlsbad Holiday Market, where we create home and holiday decor ourselves and also invite vendors to participate. This year’s CHM is set for Nov. 3,” said Kae. “Additionally this year we’re hosting our second annual Christmas in July on July 11 from 5 to 8 p.m. This will be a preview of the items we’re selling at Carlsbad Holiday Market,” added Kelly. “We also put on a large bunko event in the spring.” Kae has worked as a certified shorthand reporter for 36 years, reporting depositions in San Diego County. She loves to craft, working with paper, wood, glass, fabric, and more. “Kelly and I now dream up the majority of the items we sell at the Carlsbad Holiday Market and CHM Christmas in July,” Kae noted. She loves to travel with her husband and children, and adores doting on her two grandchildren. Kelly is the designer and owner of My Heart Beats, which is a greeting card company helping women connect, encourage, and celebrate. “I started it because when I was in direct sales, I built a team and customer base by writing notes. It was hard to find ones that expressed what I wanted to say,” Kelly related. “So I started making them.” She and her husband just celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. Together, Kae and Kelly help make the Woman’s Club of Carlsbad successful. “The funds we raise are donated to individuals in the form of scholarships to graduating senior girls from Carlsbad high schools,” shared Kae. “We also donate our time, talents, and money annually to other philanthropic groups that assist women in need, children, the elderly, animals, homeless teens, and the military.” With these two dynamic women leading the fundraising, WCC is sure to flourish. ¢

The Carlsbad Village Faire

BIANNUAL EVENT IS LARGEST ONE-DAY STREET FAIR IN THE COUNTRY

T

he Carlsbad Village Faire returned for its 44th year, bringing in more than 100,000 visitors from all over, stretching 14 blocks along Grand Ave. from Carlsbad Blvd. to Jefferson St., and hosting approximately 900 vendors. The streets of Carlsbad were filled with plenty of intriguing sights and delicious smells, offering a variety of mouthwatering food and drinks, handcrafted arts and gifts, antiques, jewelry, unique clothing, home decor, plants, and more. One of the most popular attractions of the fair was the international food court, featuring more than 50 booths serving everything from Hawaiian to Italian cuisine. The Kiwanis Club of Carlsbad also provided delicious meals, continuing its

more than 25-year tradition of hosting a pancake breakfast at the Carlsbad railroad depot. The children’s area was also a hit, entertaining kids with games, a super slide, a bounce house, a rock climbing wall, and face painting. “The Carlsbad Village Faire is a celebration of Southern California culture and our community,” said Ted Owen, president and CEO of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce. Twice a year, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce hosts the fair in May and November. The next Village Faire will take place on Nov. 4 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. To find out more about other upcoming events in Carlsbad visit www.carlsbad.org. ¢

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Emily Sim Loves Helping Others and Taking On Leadership Opportunities by LINDA FRABL | photo by Mark Hopkins Photography

S

enior Emily Sim loves the leadership opportunities afforded to her at Sage Creek High School (SCHS), and she has sought out additional volunteering prospects that allow her to flex her supervisory muscles. She professed, “I want to build more relationships with different groups on the campus and learn how to become a better leader for my community.” One school activity that really allows Emily to showcase her philanthropic leadership skills is Key Club, a worldwide community service club which Emily has been involved with since she was a sophomore. She was elected to be Key Club’s Lieutenant Governor for her division, which consists of about 300 members. Emily elaborated, “I am the CEO of 10 high school Key Clubs in San Diego, and I get to host monthly community service events, socials, and fundraisers for different charities.” Emily also participates in the Sage Creek Genius Project, a year-long endeavor in which students choose a project, execute a plan, and present their reflections to their peers and community members. Although her original Genius Project plan was to host a high school dance and raise money for a charity, Emily decided to take on a former senior’s request that someone continue their own Genius Project tradition of hosting a senior citizen prom at the Carlsbad Senior Center. “It had the same aspects as my last project, but the purpose was more meaningful,” Emily said. To round out her leadership prowess, Emily is the SCHS co-senior representative on the Superintendent Student Advisory Council, because Emily admitted, “I wanted to be a part of making schools better.” She also tutors her fellow students as a member of the National Honors Society, and she mentors incoming freshmen through her school’s Link Crew. In addition, she has been on her school’s golf team since she was a freshman, and she regularly volunteers at the Agua Hedionda Lagoon. Looking ahead, Emily wants to become a businesswoman or a pediatric dentist, but she maintained, “My main goal for the future is to live my life helping others.” In the meantime, Emily indulges in her studies, where her favorite classes are English and Science. Emily added, “I love that Sage Creek supports all of the students’ diverse passions, and that the school accepts individuality and self-expression.” ¢

M

ore than 300 Carlsbad residents attended the 2nd Annual Earth Day Celebration at the Georgina Cole Library to learn about sustainable practices through educational workshops and activities. Participants rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty in the composting workshops and worm bins, swapped crops, created succulent masterpieces, learned about endangered plant and animal species, and how to build and maintain healthy organic soil using kitchen and yard waste. The Ecology Center gave attendees a tour of their 32-foot double-decker educational bus, reviewed how to make more sustainable choices every day, and offered hands-on activities such as making wildflower seed balls and dying materials from plants. The celebration also featured crafts, live music, story time, educational booths, community garden tours, and fun for the whole family. National Charity League Honors Members photo by Ryan Kuratomi Photography

The National Charity League (NCL) Del Sol Chapter recently recognized their 20 senior class members at the Park Hyatt Aviara for their philanthropic contributions. The senior girls have volunteered over 4,000 community service hours for six consecutive years in organizations such as Meals on Wheels, American Cancer Society, City of Carlsbad, the Helen Woodward Animal Center, and more. NCL is a nonprofit national organization of mother and daughter members that began in Los Angeles in 1925 with mother and daughter teams assembling food baskets with the support of the American Red Cross. In 1947, the groups became unified as NCL and the program was expanded beyond philanthropic work to include educational and cultural activities. The Del Sol Chapter was founded in 2010 and primarily serves Rancho Santa Fe, Solana Beach, Carlsbad, and Coronado. To learn more about NCL Del Sol Chapter visit delsol.nationalcharityleague.org.

With approximately 100 guests in attendance, live music by popcountry artist Steven Cade (formerly known as Steven Ybarra), delicious drinks and food, a taco bar, and overall fun, the evening was a cause for celebration. The concert was able to raise nearly $100,000. Center and Gardens Grand Opening photo courtesy of the City of Carlsbad

Carlsbad residents were recently invited to attend a grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony for the Pine Avenue Community Center and Gardens. The celebration featured live music, crafts, games, garden demonstrations, and tours. The new multi-generational community center’s two story, ecofriendly building features a multi-purpose gym, activity rooms, and an outdoor patio and courtyard. The gardens feature drought-tolerant landscaping, a community gathering plaza, public art featuring a willow dome, picnic areas, and a raised planter bed community garden. For the grand opening, guests participated in various activities such as how to quick pickle garden vegetables, how to grow your own microgreens, a lady bug release, and a meeting with artist Jenna Didier. The community garden is being managed by the nonprofit Carlsbad Community Gardens Collaborative. To learn more visit www.carlsbadcommunitygardens.org.

Carlsbad Village Art Hop Carlsbad Village will soon return with the next Art Hop, a spin-off of the long-running Carlsbad Art Walk. The Art Hop will take place on June 28, kicking off at New Village Arts on State St. at 5 p.m. Dozens of artists will display their work throughout a variety of different pop-up art galleries in the courtyard. With three locations as part of the Art Hop — The Foundry Artist Studios, Viz Art Ink Gallery, and the Carlsbad Village Faire — each featuring different artists, attendees will be able to hop from one location to another and enjoy what each artist and location had to offer. From sculptures and jewelry to paintings and multi-media pieces, and not to mention live music and refreshments, the Carlsbad Village Art Hop will have something for everyone. The next Art Hop will be on Sept. 27. For more information, visit www.carlsbad-village.com.

CARLSBAD YOUTH BASEBALL AT-A-GLANCE: President: Jeff Johnson Years in Position: 2 Address: P.O. Box 4475 Carlsbad, CA 92008 Website: www.CarlsbadYouthBaseball.org Email: webadmin@carlsbadyouthbaseball.org Description: Carlsbad Youth Baseball is a nonprofit organization that serves hundreds of players and their families in Carlsbad and surrounding cities to provide a fun learning experience for all children.

Q&A with

Carlsbad Youth Baseball President Jeff Johnson What is the history behind Carlsbad Youth Baseball (CYB)? When was it first established? Carlsbad Youth Baseball is a nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization and was established in 1992. As a league, we have grown and become a significant part of this community. The 2018 Spring season just came to an end and we

had over 700 kids signed up to play baseball. Ages range from 4-14, and the following is a breakdown of our divisions: Shetland (ages 4-6), Pinto (ages 7-8), Mustang (ages 9-10), Bronco (ages 11-12), and Pony (ages 13-14). PONY Baseball and Softball is the name of our parent company, which was established in the summer of 1951 in Washington, PA where the headquarters are currently located. The name of our parent company, PONY, stands for “Protect Our Nation’s Youth.” What is CYB’s mission? CYB is a nonprofit organization that serves hundreds of players and their families in Carlsbad and surrounding cities. Our mission is to provide the opportunity for all children, regardless of skill, experience, and financial

status, to have a positive and fun experience learning the fundamentals of baseball, teamwork, and sportsmanship. How does CYB serve the Carlsbad community? CYB serves the community by providing a safe, fun, and educational environment for kids to learn and play the game of baseball. Youth baseball is not only fun for the kids, but it brings the community together. Anytime there are games being played, you can see multiple generations cheering on the players. From siblings to parents and grandparents, everyone enjoys sitting in the bleachers with a hot dog or nachos from the snack bar. A sense of community is definitely created when everyone pulls together to make it a fun experience for the kids. June | July 2018 • 0810 MAGAZINE.COM • 17

C O V E R F E AT U R E

What type of programs does CYB offer? Who can join and what is the registration process like? CYB provides many different ways for our players to develop over the season. A typical season consists of a combination of practices and games that build upon themselves to help players develop over time. In addition to that, we provide extra training clinics for coaches and players to help develop their skills. We also truly appreciate the relationships we have developed with our local high school baseball programs. Many players from the Carlsbad and Sage Creek baseball teams played in CYB when they were younger. A lot of these kids volunteer their time to help our league out with various events throughout the year. Where does CYB play? Carlsbad Youth Baseball plays at many different fields in Carlsbad. Our main location is Chase Field in downtown Carlsbad. We also play games at Poinsettia, Pine, Alga Norte, and Calavera Parks. In addition, some of our younger divisions play at the local elementary and middle school fields. What is your role with CYB? What are some of your duties or responsibilities? My current role with CYB is President. Duties and responsibilities include presiding over all meetings of the league membership and all meetings of the board of directors, being Chief Executive Officer of the league, being a 18 • 0810 MAGAZINE.COM • June | July 2018

member of all standing and special committees, identifying and presenting candidates for chief umpire and division commissioners to the board of directors for approval, maintaining the ability to assign duties not otherwise assigned within the bylaws, managing volunteers, interact with membership, and working with the Parks and Recreation division of the City of Carlsbad. What are the most challenging and most rewarding aspects of your role? The most challenging part of my role is time management. Being president of CYB is as rewarding as it is time consuming. Balancing my role as president, family life, and my “paying” job as a real estate agent can be challenging at times. That being said, I am lucky to have such a great group of volunteers in this organization that all devote countless hours of their time to make things run smoothly. The most rewarding aspect of my role as president is seeing the results of all of our volunteers’ hard work. By that, I mean the happiness on the kids’ faces when they are on the field playing baseball. When one of our players gets their first base hit, or catches a fly ball, you can see a smile from ear to ear. This truly makes all of the hard work worth every bit of the effort. How is CYB maintained and funded? CYB is maintained and funded in many

different ways. There is a registration process where members pay a fee for the season. This helps the league pay expenses, such as: uniforms, insurance, equipment, field lights, field maintenance, etc. We do have a financial assistance program for those that need a little help covering the registration costs. Fundraising and donations from businesses in the community are a big part of our league’s stability. How many people work or volunteer with CYB? Can you tell us more about their roles? CYB relies on volunteers to make everything work. Our organization consists of a board of directors (seven executive members), a director of baseball, five division commissioners, team managers, assistant coaches, team parents, snack bar volunteers, and volunteer parents. The board of directors (executive members) includes the president, VP of operations, VP of administration, secretary, treasurer, player and coach agent, and fundraising agent. What do the players like best about being part of the CYB team? The players in our league enjoy being part of a team. I feel these kids get a great blend of individual achievement as well as being part of a team. We work hard to instill sportsmanship and teamwork while developing individual skill sets for the game of baseball. Hopefully the lessons they learn with our league spill over into other areas of their lives. In addition to

“WHEN ONE OF OUR PLAYERS GETS THEIR FIRST BASE HIT, OR CATCHES A FLY BALL, YOU CAN SEE A SMILE FROM EAR TO EAR. THIS TRULY MAKES ALL

developing players, we support a junior umpire program. This is a fantastic opportunity that was put together by our chief umpire for both boys and girls to develop their leadership skills and learn the game from a different perspective. Does CYB need volunteers? How should those interested in volunteering get involved? CYB can always use good volunteers. The strong foundation of our organizations relies on people volunteering their time to the children in this community. Anyone that is interested in a volunteer position or donating community services can go to our website, www.carlsbadyouthbaseball.org and go to the contacts section. There you can email anyone on the board of directors and we will find a spot for them to volunteer or donate. Is there anything else you’d want readers to know? Carlsbad Youth Baseball has been giving back to the community in many different ways. We are honored to have the opportunity to support youth programs with the City of Carlsbad and baseball programs at both Carlsbad and Sage Creek High Schools. Also, in an effort to support the kids off the baseball field, we are proud to announce our first annual Carlsbad Youth Baseball Educational Grant Program. One graduating senior from each high school’s baseball team will be awarded a grant to help with their continuing education after high school is over. We feel this will help enhance our role in this community of Carlsbad and supports what PONY baseball is all about – “Protect Our Nation’s Youth.” ¢

Summer Fun Returns at the San Diego County Fair by LAINEY KRAL photos ©agezinder/123RF.COM

O

ne of San Diego's most beloved traditions has returned. The San Diego County Fair – whose theme this year is How Sweet It Is! – was first established in 1880 and arrived at its current home, the Del Mar Fairgrounds, in 1936. The fair has undergone a number of name changes over the past 138 years, and though the name was changed back to the original San Diego County Fair in 2002, many locals still know it as the Del Mar Fair. The fair offers a wide range of attractions and events, from famously adventurous fair food to dizzying carnival rides. Community members of all ages have the opportunity to showcase their talents as well, with competitions and exhibitions for collections, crafts, wine and beer, fine art, fashion, floral design, and of course, livestock of all shapes and sizes. Summer concerts are another popular draw, and this year includes a variety of artists from Little Big Town to Kansas and more. The fair will run June 1 through July 4, and is closed Mondays and Tuesdays in June. Hours vary from day to day, so check times and find out about more special events at www.sdfair.com. ¢

Onsite parking is available, as well as free offsite parking with shuttle service to the fair. Due to crowds and traffic, getting there can be hectic – be sure to leave with plenty of time to get to any special events you’re looking forward to.

Paddle Pull & Sweep

ANNUAL EVENT BENEFITS AGUA HEDIONDA LAGOON

T

he Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation recently held its annual Paddle Pull and Sweep, a clean-up event of the lagoon and its surroundings, via kayak, paddle board, or shoreline stroll. The event, sponsored by Thermo Fisher Scientific, Stifel (Carlsbad) and California Watersports, was an opportunity for families and volunteers of all ages to come together and beautify the lagoon through trash pickup. The event was able to raise $10,000, with all proceeds going towards benefiting the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation’s educational programs. More than 100 people were in attendance to be part of the action-packed activities for the day, including water relays and a beach party that incorporated one of the Foundation’s most popular events, the Rubber Ducky Derby, where participants organized teams and raced rubber ducks in the lagoon. There were plenty of other games and STEM-related educational activities hosted by Thermo Fisher Scientific, as well as food, informational booths, and more. Awards were given for the most interesting pieces of trash found, which included a pair of cargo pants and a basketball hoop base.
