Household Fiscal Year?
W
Derrick Breaux Publisher
hile many businesses use a calendar year for convenient accounting purposes, I’ve come to realize that the vast majority of people actually run their homes similar to a fiscal year basis. Sure, everyone likes to gear up and prepare for the big symbolic New Year celebration, but for most families, Jan. 1 merely marks the halfway point on the annual journey of household responsibility and schedules. Shouldn’t there be a big prize waiting for each of us when we finish the year? A calendar year ending in December doesn’t seem very exciting. Kids go back to school in January – certainly no prize for most of them. Tax season is looming right after the beginning of the new calendar year. Again, not very exciting for most of us. Although technically a new year, everyone is typically still quite involved with trying to get through their fiscal year. What I mean by this is that the end of the year for most families seems to take place in June. That’s right… June is officially the end of our household fiscal year. June is when kids finish school – in fact, many kids graduate or get promoted to the next grade. It is the month that moms and dads are typically limping through the finish line donating their final volunteer hours in the classrooms (I have to admit that I’ve read a few hilarious postings about this in some of my recent social media binges). Spring sports are finishing up. The gift of warm weather is upon us. Summer must be the end-of-year prize! Although we are spoiled in San Diego and blessed with beautiful weather year round, I still love summer. Summer brings freedom for kids – I’m sure some parents may argue that it can also bring boredom. Summer is a time for family vacations, trips to the beach, outside barbeques, walks with the dog, playing outside until sunset, and creating lifelong memories. For my daughter who recently graduated from high school, summer is a time of transition. It marks the end of a huge chapter in her life and the beginning of the rest of her adult life. The start of her new household fiscal year comes with unlimited promise, excitement, uncertainty, exploration, dedication, and nervousness – all wrapped up into a couple of months. Perhaps we should all rethink the traditional New Year celebration concept. What we should all really be celebrating is a Year “End” party (in June). I see the Year End celebration as a festive event where adults get to congratulate each other for actually making it through the year in one piece. The occasion should include high fives, hugs, toasts, and perhaps, some type of victory dance. I definitely think that we might be on to something here. I hope everyone has a great summer!

ART FOR ALL Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts Manager Vincent Kitch Arrives on the Local Art Scene by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Soul of Photography

Vincent E. Kitch Cultural Arts Manager – City of Carlsbad Arts and culture, motorcycle riding, camping, kayaking Carlsbad Village restaurants, Cannon Art Gallery, New Village Arts, Oceanside Night Market, kayaking in Agua Hedionda Lagoon or La Jolla, San Diego whale watching and fishing

incent Kitch may have arrived on the local art scene this last year, but he is certainly not a newcomer. As the Cultural Arts Manager for the City of Carlsbad, Vincent brings twenty plus years of experience to the position. Vincent did not always dream of being a government official working in art administration. Rather, it was a series of events beginning back in elementary school that led him to his career. “I began playing trombone in 4th grade and really went to college to study music because it was the only thing from high school that I was truly interested in,” he explained. After completing his Master’s degree in music at Illinois State University, Vincent entered the world where art meets government as the arts program coordinator for the City of El Paso, TX. “I took that job and have worked in government arts administration now for over twenty years,” Vincent shared. Over the years, the scope of his career has carried him into a variety of positions, from magnet school director to arts consultant and conference speaker. But it all points in the same direction, “working to ensure arts and culture are accessible to everyone,” he said. “Public service is a calling for most of us who do it and to be able to work in the arts and public service is something I really treasure.” In just the last six months as Carlsbad’s cultural arts manager, Vincent has initiated a national call and secured public art on the Rail Trail Roundabout Project in Carlsbad Village, reopened the sculpture garden behind their office, and piloted a new arts education program with the Parks and Recreation Department and Leo Carillo Historic Park. He explained the impetus for the projects; “We want to develop collaborative partnerships that will increase access, awareness, and impact of arts and culture in Carlsbad for out residents and visitors alike.” But it’s not all about art. During his time away from work, he can be found riding his motorcycle, camping, and sea kayaking. Vincent has also held his real estate license and is in interested in investment properties. As for his music that was so instrumental early in his life, he looks forward to finding the time to pick up his horn again. “It’s been about two years since I’ve performed and I miss it. It’s an important part of who I am,” Vincent shared. ¢

Thirteen teams competed against one another to find hidden Village treasures. The three teams with the highest scores won Visit the Village prize packages which consisted of gift certificates and products donated by Village Merchants. According to Deb Ferraro, C3 Vice President, “The most exciting part of the hunt was that we were able to introduce so many people to the new Village businesses and improvements. Cycle on Carlsbad
THIS YEAR’S CARLSBAD PRIX FEATURES CYCLING FOR ALL ABILITIES photos by Jim Wolf
H
ave you ever wanted to be a part of big-league bike racing? Well, now’s your chance as another Carlsbad Grand Prix cycling event is on its way. Hosted by Swami’s Cycling Club, this year’s event will take place on July 20 and will feature over 700 junior, amateur, professional and Paralympics hand cyclists (via Challenged Athletes Foundation) competing in timed races for prizes as well as 3,000 spectators! The full day of races starts at 7 a.m. and will finish in the evening. The 0.9 mile course, located on a platform above the Carlsbad Flower Fields with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, will host races throughout the day including a Carlsbad Family Fun Race. “Families will ride around the course as many times as they can in twenty minutes, and each member will receive a raffle ticket for each lap completed,” explained Fred Muir, Event Director. There will also be a kid’s race for the tykes too inexperienced to complete full laps on the track. Fred emphasized the central focus of the event: to provide an inclusive cycling race for all. “We will have a Challenged Athletes Race for the second year,” he said. He continued, “We also place extra emphasis on junior and women racers. These categories get short shifted in other races and we believe there is huge room for growth in both.” Spectators and participants will also be able to watch professional BMX riders compete, visit the health and fitness expo, and enjoy live music by the Museum of Making Music.
Carlsbad residents of all cycling abilities are encouraged to take part in the ride and learn more about the ways in which cycling contributes to a healthier lifestyle. Fred related, “To be able to provide a local event showing the fun, excitement, and health benefits of cycling is a dream come true.” ¢

Where’d this magazine come from? Meet the
Team
In 2009, we launched our first community magazine. The goal was simple – to publish a local magazine that people actually wanted to read. Since publishing our original issue back in 2009, ZCode Magazines has grown to a family of eleven community titles, each focusing on specific areas of North County. The ZCode team, or shall we say, family, takes great pride at meeting our overall goal in every issue we build together. We all live locally in San Diego and we are actively involved in every one of the communities. Whether we are shaking hands, meeting people, participating in school, sports, organizations and philanthropic events, we are out there learning and sharing the good news about what’s going on in your community. Thank you for inviting us in to your home and being a reader of 08/10 Magazine.
Derrick Breaux | Publisher I’ve always found it rewarding to build things. I like the process just as much as I enjoy the end result. It’s great to see each issue of the magazines grow from concept to hard copy. My typical day at the office consists of interacting closely with the editorial, production, graphics and sales teams.
Tyler McElhaney | Creative Director The nickname “Tynology” can almost describe my obsession with the latest, greatest, newest, most exclusive “thing.” At the ZCode office one can usually find me designing covers, playing with cameras, editing photos, redesigning websites, searching for “that one” cable, fixing computers and re-redesigning websites.
Sarabeth McElhaney | Editor As a San Diego transplant from the City of Good Neighbors, I am constantly falling deeper in love with my “new” home every day. ZCode has helped me discover everything there is to offer in our bountiful region of the west coast. At the ZCode office one can usually find me sorting through the mountain of news and events in our area. You know I mean business when my hair is tied up in a messy bun.
Jessica Rae Woods | Editorial Assistant I’m a San Diego native who likes to write and read (a lot!), play Japanese taiko, and spend time with my extended family. I’m an entertainment enthusiast: movies, comics, video games; you name it, I love it. In the ZCode office, you can find me clacking away at the computer, listening to music, and tackling editing projects like a machine. I love San Diego and can’t wait to discover new things about this great city.
Tori Morrison | Editorial Assistant I was born and raised in San Diego and feel extremely lucky to call this beautiful city home. I enjoy hanging out at the beach whenever I have free time and often spend a lot of my down time running near the ocean or relaxing with a good book. I have a passion for traveling and have lived in both Europe and Asia. I taught English in China for over a year! You can find me at the office absorbed in an article or talking with our graphics or production team.
Jessica Breaux | Director of Business Development I am a native San Diegan and I couldn’t imagine working, playing and raising my family anywhere else. I spend most of my evenings and weekends being a soccer mom of three. At the ZCode office one can usually find me juggling lots just as I do at home. If I’m not at the office pushing paperwork you will find me out networking in our communities.

Rick Micheri | Regional Account Executive As a first generation American, the local community played a daily role in my life. For over thirty-six years this community has been an extension of the family. I’m proud to have my daughters enjoying the same schools, events, families and so much more that is offered today. ZCode is a great way for me to give back and to the community. At ZCode you will find me expanding the horizons with new business development, agency sales directing and helping hand in hand wherever necessary.
Michelle Dastyck | Senior Marketing Consultant My first sales job was at the age of 7. My parents owned Santa Fe Clothing on Stevens Avenue in Solana Beach. My “job” was to select just the right tie for customers buying a new suit. Who could resist a 7-year-old’s fashion pointers? You won’t find me at the office very often because I am out spreading the word about ZCode and meeting with local Carlsbad businesses.
Mani Salazar | Graphic Designer San Diego born and bred, I’ve been to 49 states and wouldn’t live anywhere else! (Alaska is #50). Married for two years to my beautiful wife, we enjoy traveling and going on as many adventures as possible. I’m blessed to design for a living – it’s definitely my passion. At the ZCode office one can usually find me staring wide-eyed at the monitor, eating sunflower seeds, being extremely OCD with my designs or trying to sneak in as much hand-lettering as possible. Who says we have to grow up?!
Traci Sally | Graphic Designer I moved to Carlsbad from Philadelphia checking off a landmark goal on my bucket list to make a home by the ocean. I’ve been designing for the past ten years and can’t imagine doing anything else. Outside work I trade my mouse for a paintbrush or my woodblock press and enjoy spending time on the local beaches. At the office one can find me creating smartly balanced ads and layouts fueled by a giant Starbucks iced coffee (venti, no room with an extra shot, shaken)
Richard Soledad | Graphic Designer I have always enjoyed art, media, and design, and have had the privilege to join the ZCode Media team. At the office, you’ll often find me working with layout and crosschecking various pieces of paper. I enjoy spending time with my wife and our wonderful toddler, exploring and discovering what San Diego has to offer. You’ll often catch me watching movies, shows or playing video games in my spare time. When not doing those things, I enjoy drawing said movies, shows and video games.
Maria Fernandez | Graphic Designer I was born and raised in Mexico, where I was surrounded by the love of my big family and lots of good food. Now that I am in San Diego, I find myself constantly feeding and caring for my husband, two kids (along with their friends), and our puppy. When not with my family, I enjoy going to the gym or reading. I am passionate about graphic design, and I’m thrilled to be doing what I love at ZCode, a place that has become an extension of my family.
Heather Lockwood | Production Coordinator I am a mother to two wonderful boys, and a wife to the love of my life of seventeen years, with over eight pets; dogs, cats, and a bird. In my free time, I enjoy making and fixing jewelry for friends and family. I’m known in the office as “Lockwood” and can usually be found sending emails and being the liaison between our marketing and graphics departments. I love seeing the magazines printed knowing I helped make it happen.

enry Gardner, a recent graduate of Carlsbad High School (CHS) and resident of Calavera Hills, is a modern day renaissance man. The Carlsbad Music Festival Village Walk CARLSBAD’S BELOVED MUSICAL WALK IN THE VILLAGE RETURNS photos provided by The Carlsbad Music Festival
A
vailable to the public and open to musicians with diverse musical backgrounds, the Carlsbad Music Festival Village Walk is the music festival for everyone. As Abby McKee, Managing Director of the Carlsbad Music Festival Village Walk, stated, [the event is] “a veritable ‘choose your own adventure’ of concerts.” And this year’s event was even more adventurous with over forty musicians and a couple thousand spectators in attendance. The Carlsbad Music Festival Village Walk marks a joint musical celebration of sorts. It premiered in 2013 in celebration of International Day of Music and as an extension of the September Carlsbad Music Festival. The Walk, which consists of locally-owned music shops, galleries, parks and other public spaces and businesses runs with twenty minute sets starting every half hour. Guests were invited to carve out their own path based on which artists they wanted to visit. “This year’s headliners were Wu Man’s new collaboration with Son de San Diego featuring the intersection of stringed instruments from China and Mexico. Wu Man is an internationally-renowned Chinese pipa (lute) player and Carlsbad resident, and Son de San Diego plays Son Jarocho music from southern Mexico,” explained Abby. Other highlights included cinematic tales by Carlsbad-based indie-Americana band Trouble in the Wind, sonic inventions by experimental percussionist Nathan Hubbard, and the modern surf guitar musical styling of The Red Fox Tails.
The Walk is made possible in part by the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation as well as through grants from the San Diego Foundation and the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Office. Find out more information about the Music Walk or Carlsbad’s Music Festival at www.carlsbadmusicfestival.org. ¢

BALLROOM BENEFITS Carlsbad’s Own Steccaglia/ Dexter Family Dances at Home and Abroad by KELLEY GUSICH photos by Lauren Nygard Photography
Dance v. 1. To move rhythmically to music 2. Move in a quick and lively way
TWIRL
Giacomo Steccaglia and Melissa Dexter first sashayed into one another’s lives in Bournemouth, England. They were competing in the United Kingdom Ballroom Championships, and a world champion dance coach envisioned them dancing well together. The rest, as they say, is history. They are now United States and Italian Latin American Ballroom Dance Champions, and World Latin American Showcase Champions. They’ve both been dancing since they were children (Melissa was trained in classical ballet), and as adults they are paying it forward. The couple owns Dancessence Studios in Carlsbad, and are devoted to showing people of all ages the benefits of ballroom dancing.

Melissa and Giacomo travel the world as dancers, coaching other professionals, judging world class competitions, and lecturing. Their 9-year-old son, Hayden, had his own adventures on a trip to Japan. “Because of his long blonde hair and blue eyes, people liked to touch his hair and take pictures wherever we went,” Melissa laughed. “It was like traveling with a rock star.” When at home, they’ve volunteered at several schools in Carlsbad and Vista, in senior centers, after school programs and the Boys &
Girls Club. Every year during National Ballroom Dance Week, they open up their school to the public for people to learn the art free of charge.

Born and raised in Arcola, Italy, Giacomo now takes Hayden back to Italy every year to spend time with his grandparents. Melissa was born in Berkeley and raised in Sonoma, but she spent ten years in Rome where Hayden was born. They’ve been in Carlsbad for six years now. “We love the open space,” Melissa shared. Hayden will be in 4th grade next year at the Kelly School, and besides being a blue belt in karate, he takes guitar. Will he follow in his parents’ footsteps? He’s also taking dance lessons!

The Stecagglia/Dexter family travels the world to share the art of the ballroom dance, so it might surprise people to know that home is their favorite place to be. They love ‘jammy day’, where everyone stays home all day and does nothing but play games. “That saying from The Wizard of Oz says it best,” Melissa confided, “there is no place like home, especially here in Carlsbad.” ¢

New Mural in The Village
TEKSTartist unveiled its newest mural at the corner of State St. and Carlsbad Village Dr. in the Carlsbad Village. According to artist Jason Markow, the concept behind the mural was based off of a collaboration between himself and the new business, Choice, which will be opening up at the location. “I’ve had my heart set on that wall for quite a while. The window is in such a unique position, and I loved the idea of incorporating it into a piece. As soon as the people at Choice told me there would be a hanging wall garden beneath the window, I instantly knew what I wanted to do,” Jason stated. Jason created the piece with brushes, spray cans, and paint on rollers. The mural took him approximately sixty hours to finish.

Principal Plays Jafar in Aladdin
Hope Elementary School’s production of Aladdin showed off a new side of the school’s principal – a more sinister side that is. Principal Richard Tubbs starred as the evil vizier Jafar alongside his students. “I wanted to participate because not only are these my kids, it’s my favorite Disney photo courtesy of Brenda Dodge movie ever,” stated Tubbs. He was also drawn to the idea of being the evil character. He knew his students would get a kick out of ‘defeating’ him at the end of the play. “I have students walking by me on campus saying, ‘Jafar, we’re going to get you!’” He laughed, “I just hope it’s not typecasting.” The show was put on by Character Kids, a children’s theatre company that provides after school theatre education throughout North County San Diego.

Halstrom Academy Provides Students with Individualized and Flexible Learning Options
by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos by Tyler McElhaney
H
alstrom Academy was started in 1985 by Karen Bishop, an educator who wanted to create a more personalized and flexible approach to learning for students who have unique circumstances, such as actors, athletes, students with ADD, ADHD or social anxiety and students who wish to learn at their own pace and accelerate their learning. Flexible scheduling options and the 1:1 student teacher ratio differentiate Halstrom from the traditional school model. Students who attend Halstrom Academy are given the opportunity to become self-directed learners, creative problem solvers, effective communicators and active participants in their communities while they prepare for successful college and working careers. According to Halstrom Academy Carlsbad, they offer robust college preparatory and Advanced Placement programs, as well as 1:1 SAT preparation, college counseling and tutoring. As stated by Halstrom educators, the school provides a small, caring environment that fosters strong three-way communication between parents, students and teachers. This communication allows students to flourish in an educational model that is tailored specifically to their individual needs and learning styles. Technology is a large part of Halstrom’s commitment to enhancing student and teacher communication. Both students and teachers use iPads that are loaded with eTextbooks and other educational applications. According to Halstrom Academy, technology can help teachers provide students with real life examples to make material more relevant. For example, it is not unusual for literature teachers to use visual arts, movies and/or music to complement the core curriculum. The student population at Halstrom Carlsbad is comprised of young entrepreneurs, community volunteers, strong leaders and professional athletes. Jacob Szekely is an excellent example of a student athlete who directly benefits from the flexibility offered by Halstrom Academy. “What I really like about Halstrom is the 1:1 teaching and how they are able to cater to my needs as a professional athlete,” said Jacob, 2013 National Scholastic Surfing Association West Coast Men’s Champion. According to Jacob, attending Halstrom has allowed him to receive a top-notch education, as well as to focus on his professional surfing career.

Fresh Food and Goods at the State Street Farmers’ Market photos by Soul of Photography
W
hile there has been a farmers’ market in Carlsbad continuously since 1994, the city’s current State Street Farmers’ Market is still in its first year. With a well-planned reboot, the market
now takes over State Street from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. every Wednesday. With fresh fruit and produce, prepared foods and packaged goods, the market’s newest iteration is a welcome addition to the city of Carlsbad. We talk with Market Manager Ron LaChance about the options available to residents and visitors when they happen to find themselves in The Village on any given Wednesday.

Q&A
with Market Manager Ron
What is the history behind the State Street Farmers’ Market? The Carlsbad Village Association started the previous Village farmers’ market in 1994, which was located in a parking lot a block off State Street. Although well attended at first, through the years attendance dropped and farmers began pulling out of the market. In 2012, noticing the downward trend, Urban Place Consulting – consultants hired to help revitalize The Village – decided through a series of neighborhood meetings with residents and businesses that the best place to have a market was right in the middle of State Street with afternoon hours that made it easier for working people to attend. The old market was closed beginning June 2013, and the market in its current form, State Street Farmers’ Market, was opened at the end of June 2013. With this change of location came room for twice as many vendors, a better variety of produce and products, and visibility so that everyone visiting

LaChance
Carlsbad Village on Wednesdays knows there’s a farmers’ market.
What is your role with the market? I am the market manager. I organize the event each week as well as deal with vendor recruitment and more.
Does the market partner up with any local organizations or businesses? The market has a sponsorship program, which includes a booth every week for any local organization or business that would like to promote something. We like to work very closely with the local businesses as it is a win for everybody to have people on the street. We also have a booth allocated for nonprofit groups and all local businesses and organizations can always have cards and/or flyers at the information table. We definitely like to help promote The Village and all its businesses.
How has the market evolved since its opening? We are quite fortunate to have more space than the previous market. We have a much wider selection of items, both produce and prepared and packaged foods. The State Street Farmers’ Market has evolved into one of the best markets in the county with under fifty vendors.
How many vendors does the market host? On any given day we have twenty-one farms and approximately thirty-five vendors selling prepared foods, packaged foods and a small crafter section.
What are your most popular vendors? Like any quality farmers’ market, the produce is what makes the market successful. However, other favorites include: Annel and Drew’s incredible marinated chicken and artichokes,
Vonda Lee’s Cheesecake in a Cup – you have to come see Vonda’s son selling cheesecakes in her apron – and Bitchin’ Sauce, all of which are made right here in Carlsbad. Also, Carlsbad’s own Valdivia farms has amazing local heirloom tomatoes when in season.
On any given week, about how many visitors attend the market? Each week we have about 1,500 to 2,000 visitors at our market.
What variety of items can be found at the market? Whatever is in season can be found here. In addition to the great produce you can also get fresh fish, sauces, marinades, granola, baked goods, spices, tamales, olive oils, pastas and more. We also have four cooked food booths so you can get a meal at the market and listen to live music.

How many farmers supply food to the market? Do all food vendors only carry organically grown produce/ cuisine? We have twenty-one farmers represented at the market, including five certified organic growers.
Tell us about the cost benefits of shopping at the State Street Farmers’ Market. The cost benefits are not what a farmers’ market is all about. What you do get from the farmers’ market is the freshest local produce that wasn’t picked until it was at the peak of ripeness. In most cases, what you are buying from the farmers’ market was picked that day or the day prior. This also means it had more time on the plant just like Mother Nature intended. Large grocery chains and bulk stores get produce that was picked before it was ripe so that they could pack and ship it. Another benefit of the farmers’ market is that you are meeting the folks that grow your food. They are happy to answer any questions you might have about their farm and their growing practices.
What sets the market apart from other markets in the area? What sets us apart from other markets in the area for starters is our location. We are in a beautiful city, right near the beach. In addition, we are surrounded by restaurants and great boutiques. You could go shopping for everything you need and then sit on a street side patio, have a glass of wine and watch the market happen. You can’t do that at more than two or three farmers’ markets in the whole county. As I already mentioned I would put the variety found at our market up against any market in the county of the same size. We have about fifty vendors. Bigger is not always better.
What can one expect if they visit the market on any given Wednesday? They can expect fresh produce, a great selection of prepared foods, a relaxing neighborly atmosphere and amazing live music to enjoy.
What are the top four or five reasons one visits the market? The top five reasons to visit the market are also the things people can expect to see every week if they attend. Fresh, local produce, great prepared items, live music, people watching, and boutique store shopping as we are in the middle of the Carlsbad Village. There is the beautiful beach two blocks away as well.
How will the market change when the summer season begins? The only changes that we see in the summer are longer hours, 3 to 7 p.m. instead of 3 to 6 p.m., like winter hours. Also peaches, nectarines, blueberries, strawberries, tomatoes and cherries are all in peak season during the summer.
Please tell us about the surrounding area of the market. What else does State St. have to offer to visitors? State St. has a wide array of restaurants, bars and unique shopping. The market is located right in the middle of it all. You can buy your vegetables, shop for a new outfit, then sit and have a glass of wine or amazing dinner at one of the many restaurants. It’s truly a unique experience. ¢

he recent 16th Annual Celebrity Golf Championship held at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa had it all, from celebrity sightings to sports enthusiasts and acts of kindness. The event raised over $135,000 for both the Junior Seau Foundation, which strives to support and empower children through prevention awareness, and the Marshall Faulk Foundation, which seeks to create opportunities for children to help them succeed. Additionally, a portion of the funds were donated to support the families who lost their homes in the San Diego wildfires. Around fifty celebrities from national sports leagues, television, radio, and the music industry, as well as Olympians showed their support for the charities. Former MLB All-Star winner Rick Rhoden took first place at the event. With athletes, entertainers, and Hollywood celebrities all competing in a fun game of golf, the links were a sight to see that day. ¢

On Wings We Remember
A RARE WWII AIRCRAFT EXPERIENCE FOR THE PUBLIC photos by The Collings Foundation
T
he Wings of Freedom Tour reached Carlsbad residents’ ears before the planes were even spotted. Four WWII bomber and fighter planes touched down at McClellan-Palomar Airport recently, leaving the community both awe-stricken and tenderly nostalgic with memories of the first major war to feature widespread bombing. The planes included a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, Consolidated B-24 Liberator, as well as a North American P-51 Mustang. The restored WWII planes are part of the Wings of Freedom Tour, the longest and most extensive running tour of its kind in the world. Sponsored by The Collings Foundation, the tour seeks to honor America’s WWII veterans, remembering the sacrifices they made, as well as educate America’s youth about one of the most destructive and horrific wars in the nation’s history. As Hunter Chaney, the director of marketing at the Collings Foundation revealed, “[We want to] engage, particularly the younger generations, in an unique experience that penetrates the very marrow – in
a way that both motivates one to want to learn more, and creates a better understanding of what it must have been like to be a WWII air crewman.” The public was given a rare opportunity to look inside, explore the aircraft imaging, and imagine what it must have felt like to take control of the WWII bomber plane. The tour also offered people with the opportunity to take a flight aboard the Consolidated B-24 Liberator. Several WWII Vets were also in attendance, sharing stories and speaking about their experiences. The Collings Foundation is a nonprofit educational foundation with the goal of supporting and preserving historic events by encouraging the public to educate themselves about the past through participation. As Hunter put it, “It is up to all of us to remember the great sacrifices and tragedies that were made by our veterans and to encourage people to remember what happened over seventy years ago.” The Wings of Freedom Tour has taken flight and left Carlsbad for now, but the memories of WWII will remain in the hearts of the public for years to come. ¢

Bruce Meyer Writes Memoirs, but Knows How to Live In the Present by LYDIA COBB | photo by Lauren Nygard Photography
B
ruce Meyer has been retired for nearly eight years, and he’s already actively involved with his new interests. He is writing a series of memoirs (and jokes that he’s his favorite subject) and meets weekly with a writing group at the Carlsbad Senior Center. He was born in Brooklyn, NY and grew up in northern New Jersey. Shortly after graduating from Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania, he was drafted by the U.S. Army in the turbulent times of the Vietnam War. He survived a year in Vietnam. “After two years in the Army, I got married, got a job, had two sons, and was transferred by my company at the time to Marietta, GA, where I spent nine years before relocating to Carlsbad in 1986,” revealed Bruce. His career path began in 1970 with a Fortune 500 company. He retired in 2006 as vice president in sales from Examinetics, a company that provides employee health screening services. “I’m proud that over the years the health services provided by Examinetics saved the lives of many workers throughout the country,” added Bruce. Since retiring, Bruce mixes it up. He tutors at the City of Carlsbad Library Learning Center, where he’s been with his present learner for two years and helps her develop skills in reading, writing and grammar. He played softball for six years with North County Senior Softball. He served on the board of the Carlsbad Friends of the Library his first three years after retirement, and is former secretary and treasurer on his HOA Board. Bruce enjoys writing about his life experiences, volunteering, and being involved in several passions. “My advice is, regardless of your age, start planning for your retirement now,” shared Bruce. “Learn to relax, cultivate interests outside your career and give back to your community.” He wants to stay healthy and to continue to enjoy life with Sandi, his wife of forty-three years. They look forward to watching their sons and daughter-in-law live happy adult lives. They have two grandchildren. He’s heard others complain of boredom in retirement. “It should be the best time of your life,” proclaimed Bruce. So he’s demonstrating that—reading a book a week, playing golf, volunteering, spending time with friends, traveling and taking a cruise when possible. This is life, after all, and material for his next chapter. ¢

CHS IS AWARDED AS ONE OF THE FINALISTS IN THE VANS SHOE CONTEST photos provided by Kelly Foulk
C
arlsbad High School (CHS) students recently participated in the Vans Custom Culture Shoes Contest, and out of 2,000 schools selected to enter shoes into the contest, they have been awarded one of the top five finalists, and the top school in the California district! The Vans Custom Culture Shoes Contest is a national high school shoe customization contest open to schools wishing to compete for a chance to win funding for their art programs. Registered schools take part in the competition by creating their own sneakers according to a specific theme. To participate in this year’s contest, students had to design four pairs of Vans sneakers according to the themes provided: Art, Music, Action, Sports and Local Flavor. Drawing inspiration from the local Carlsbad beaches, surf culture, and art, the Carlsbad students’ shoes encompassed the vibe of CHS and the city of Carlsbad perfectly, with bright floral patterns, courageous surfers riding along waves, and sunsets glittering with vibrant colors. Only ten schools in California and only fifty schools nationwide were accepted into the semi-finals. After entering the semi-finals, a national vote took place where voters were given the chance to select their favorite shoes in five districts, the California Region, Southwest Region, Northwest Region, Southeast Region, and Southwest Region. For receiving the top award in these districts, representatives from CHS along with Rio Rancho, Parker, Eastern, and Cinnaminson High Schools won a trip to New York
City along with a $4,000 award for their art programs. Vans flew twenty CHS students to New York City for an exclusive final event where the grand prize winning school received a $50,000 prize for their art program and the chance for their shoes to be produced and sold in Vans retail stores. The four runner-up schools, including CHS also received funding for their art programs. To view all of the schools’ sneakers or find out more information visit www.sites.vans.com/customculture. ¢

Garden S TRANSFORM your
BED
by TORI MORRISON
ummer emerges each year with a bright and sunny entrance. Here in San Diego we wait in anticipation for that final school bell, or for the skies to open up for a relaxing day at the beach. Once beach weather settles in it’s pretty difficult to stay motivated, however why not mix it up this summer with a do-it-yourself-project in your garden? There’s plenty of crafty ideas out there for raised vegetable boxes, and with their versatility it’s easy to turn a garden bed into a piece of artwork. You can even put your summer seashell collecting to good use and style the beds with beach-sytle decor. Here are some ideas to get you started.
CORRUGATED METAL BED
STONE-LINED BED
For a cool, industrial look, cut eight panels of corrugated metal to size and lay them out so that they cross over each other by two inches. Begin at one end of the panels and start attaching them panel to panel by drilling three evenly spaced holes down each seam so that it goes through both panels. Using a rivet gun, place a rivet in each of the holes. Next, rivet the final seam. Place support rods on the outside of the beds and pound them into the ground until they are at an even level with the top of the bed. To make a bottom, cut pieces of hardware cloth to fit inside the bed. Next, place them in the bed so they overlap and curve up the sides.
Create a raised bed in a frame that sits on the surface of the soil. Use stones, rocks, bricks, or shells as accent pieces. In this case ensure that the soil is properly mounded as it forms part of the landscape of the bed. When you dig, clear the soil and then use a sharp, square-bladed spade to break up it up. Next, change to a round-pointed shovel for evening out the surface.

WATER TROUGH For those who aren’t so handy with tools, there’s always the option of purchasing a galvanized water trough and drilling holes at the bottom for drainage. Place rocks in between the holes and the soil to create some room and an additional layer to catch water.

I had a conversation with my agent and decided to look at State Farm, and I’m glad I did.” The Hugh Kollar State Farm Agency is located in the heart of Carlsbad Village in between Pizza Port and Giacoletti Music on the corner of State St. and Carlsbad Village Dr. “Being in The Village has been an awesome experience for us. We spend so much time in the The Village as a family; it just made sense for us to put our business here when the opportunity presented itself.” “I love going to Knockout or some of the other cool little places to eat lunch in The Village. New Faces on Campus MARANATHA CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS AND CARLSBAD HIGH SCHOOL WELCOME NEW ATHLETIC DIRECTORS
S
teve Whitley, a 92008 resident, is excited to be heading the Maranatha Christian Schools (MCS) athletic program as their new athletic director. Steve has more than thirty years of baseball coaching experience, including several years in MLB funded, NCAA sanctioned collegiate summer leagues. He has also coached at various high schools and colleges around San Diego and scouted for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Steve explained that his goal is to “help steer the program away from a school that simply ‘offers CIF sports’ into a school that develops athletes for a higher level of play.” MCS currently offers football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, track, and baseball, and Steve expressed that his long term goals include adding golf and tennis programs, and restoring the MCS softball team. “I am excited for the future of Maranatha athletics,” Steve expressed. “I hope to see a long list of athletes come through our school and learn the skills taught through a quality athletic program to help them lead successful lives.” Carlsbad High School (CHS) is pleased to announce their new athletic director, Amanda Waters. Amanda has extensive experience as a coach, having coached basketball on and off for fifteen years. She also played softball and basketball at the collegiate level in Maine. “I am excited for the opportunity to work as the athletic director at CHS,” Amanda expressed. “We have a very successful sports program, many great coaches, and amazing students.”
Looking to the future, Amanda hopes to “provide continual support to CHS’ coaching staff, hire staff to assist with the growth of athletic programs, and help student athletes excel in as many ways as possible.” She aims to collaborate with coaches and athletes alike in order to accomplish these goals. Amanda is looking forward to starting her new chapter at CHS. ¢

A
ssemblymember Brian Maienschein recently honored us here at ZCode Magazines as the 77th Assembly District’s 2014 Small Business of the Year in recognition of our ongoing commitment to the readers of our community. “ZCode Magazines has found an innovative way to bring people in our community together by showcasing local businesses, events, and residents,” Maienschein said. “I’m proud to recognize ZCode for creating a fun, community-based publication that San Diegans enjoy reading, while helping local small businesses promote themselves.” Launched in 2009, we started with one publication, 92127 Magazine, a reference to the zip code where the magazine was distributed. Since then we have grown to become the publisher of eleven zip code-specific magazines, reaching 185,000 San Diegans. Each magazine highlights unique local businesses, families, students, sports, and community events. ZCode Magazines also provides advice to local businesses on community outreach using social media, email, and custom publishing.
“On behalf of all of us at ZCode Magazines, we are honored to be selected by Assemblymember Maienschein to receive the Small Business of the Year Award,” said Derrick Breaux, Publisher and CEO of ZCode Magazines. “We work hard to serve our readers and the community that we love, and we wouldn’t be successful without them.” A family business, Breaux’s brother, Tyler McElhaney, serves as creative director and COO for our publishing company, located in the Rancho Bernardo area of San Diego. “Maintaining a balance of high quality design and production along with hyper-local stories and features is our biggest goal. Employing local writers, photographers, designers and sales staff reinforces our commitment to the communities of San Diego,” explained McElhaney. Each year, the California Small Business Association asks legislators to nominate a Small Business of the Year from their district that has demonstrated exemplary business ethics and community service. We were presented with a framed certificate from the State Assembly recognizing our outstanding contributions. ¢

CURIOSITY Point Loma's Beautiful Landmarks and Nature by JESSICA WOODS | photos by Tyler McElhaney
W
e're deep into summer: the sun is bright, the sand is soft, and the ocean is so inviting. For what remains of your summer break, take a day to explore Point Loma, offering historical landmarks, tide pools, awe-inspiring cliffs and hiking trails.
The Old Point Loma Lighthouse takes you back in time to when sailing ships relied on these beacons to guide them through safe waters. Built in 1854, its light could be seen for twenty-five miles. However, the builders didn’t take into account the signature low fog that would obscure the light, and so in 1891, the lighthouse was closed and a new Point Loma lighthouse was constructed at a lower elevation. The old lighthouse has now been converted into a museum, where you can explore what life was like there and see the old lamp whose large beam once permeated the peninsula. Below the lighthouses are a series of silent sentinels collectively known as Fort Rosecrans. The Point Loma peninsula shapes a natural barrier at the entrance of San Diego Bay, and in 1899 the United States Department of War built a series of gun batteries into the cliffs as a strategic harbor defense. While you can’t
46 • 0810Magazine.com • July | August 2014
enter the batteries themselves today, you can walk alongside these massive strongholds. Whale-watching is popular here, but head to the tide pools to see the tinier creatures that make homes on our shores. Sea stars, mussels, crabs, and other gastropods come and go with the tides. While fun to look at, rangers warn not to touch the animals, as many of them are sensitive and can be harmed or killed from being handled by humans. The tide pools are parallel to the Coastal Tidepool Trail, and more hiking can be explored on the two-mile Bayside Trail. For history hounds, the Cabrillo National Monument offers a closer look at the first explorer to land on the United States’ western shores, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. With a large statue to commemorate his exploration, the park also features annual reenactments of his landing. ¢

How Fast Are Homes Really Selling? What Does This Mean For 2014? We Know! by GLENN HOLTZ & TANYA GABRIELLA
H
ow fast are homes really selling? C.A.R. 2013 Home Seller Survey reported in 2013, half of all homes were on the market for six weeks or less. This is the shortest time homes have sat on the market since 2005. C.A.R. also showed that in 2013 the average weeks on the market for a listing was eight and a half weeks compared to the average listing sitting on the market for twenty-six weeks in 2012. What does this mean for 2014? According to Fannie Mae’s April 2014 National Housing Survey, Americans outlook towards the housing market continued to improve in April, foreshadowing an increase in the housing activity in the coming months. Of the respondents who believe now is a good time to sell a home increased for the third consecutive month to an all-time high. “These results are in line with our expectations for increased housing activity and gradual strengthening of the housing market going into the spring and summer selling season,” said Doug Duncan, Senior Vice President and Chief Economist at Fannie Mae.
