College Bound

believe that milestones account for a great deal of who we are as a person. Some milestones are good. Some are not so good. One might categorize them as achievements, while others see them more as benchmarks in life. When we aren’t in the midst of experiencing a landmark life event, we are usually working our way towards it. Excitement often builds. Anticipation grows as the event gets closer. What was once so far away is now in sight. It’s very rare when a major life event sneaks up on us – but it does happen from time to time (good or bad). This month marks the culmination of a 17-year-long journey. While our family is not alone – thousands of families send their children off to college each year – it certainly feels special and unique to my small family in our corner of the world. Our beautiful and intelligent daughter is college-bound. The same little girl that we taught to ride a bike. The little girl that we began coaching in soccer at the age of four, eventually developing into a speedster that could outrun nearly every opponent down the sideline when given the opportunity. Homework assignments. Board games at the table. Long philosophical discussions about friends, boyfriends, and life in general – whether she wanted to hear what her mother and I had to say or not. We will miss this. We will miss it all. I think I might be somewhat of a selfish person when it comes to family. I don’t apologize for this. On one hand, we want her to go and begin her journey of adulthood and independence – after all, isn’t that the whole point of being a parent? Isn’t that our job? Yes, I am selfish. We will miss the comfort and joy of seeing her around the house on a daily basis. We will miss having groups of her friends (some going all the way back to early elementary school) hanging out around the house. We will miss knowing that she is safe and sound in her bedroom. We will even miss watching her sit on the couch and speed-text what appears to be dozens of people at once. We might even miss some of the sibling bickering that inevitably takes place between the younger kiddos and her. But we are very proud of her. We are excited for her. A big life event is upon her. We will help her move into her new dorm this week. As always, we will very much be a part our little girl’s new journey that she is starting. Although she will still be close to home, she will still have her independence and get the full college experience by living on campus. This is something that we wanted for her. To our daughter Ashley (a few bits of advice): Go get ‘em. Challenge yourself. Believe in yourself. Learn as much as you can, then learn more. Simply show up – it’s more than half the battle. Always finish what you start. Be your own best friend. Live with integrity. Most importantly, cherish the moment. P.S. We lightheartedly keep telling her that she can’t bring her laundry home on the weekends (they have laundry facilities in the dorms). But truth be told, doing a couple of loads of laundry on the weekends is a very small price to pay for us to ensure that she comes back home to visit regularly.

Knowledge for Life, not just tests.

When the curriculum is vast and vague, children memorize words to regurgitate on tests. In Montessori, learning is about the world, not mere words. Science starts with observation, not textbooks. Math begins with concrete materials, and progresses to abstraction. History presents great stories, brought to life. When students understand, they remember—for life.

Entrepreneur

RETIRED CARLSBAD BATTALION CHIEF LAUNCHES HIS OWN BUSINESS by AMY LEHRER | photo by Lauren Nygard Photography

U

pon graduating high school, Kim Blaylock knew he wanted to become a firefighter. He received his AA degree from Orange Coast College, another AA degree from Santa Ana Community College in Fire Science and graduated from the Santa Ana Fire Academy in 1975. Fortunate to be hired by the City of Carlsbad, he worked through the ranks – from firefighter medic to fire engineer to fire captain to battalion chief – before retiring from a thirty-year career. In addition to his firefighting career, Kim has always been an entrepreneur. He owned and operated multiple coin-operated businesses and rental properties and currently owns a car wash in Vista. About two years after retiring, he and a fellow firefighter from Seattle decided to make vodka. They spent the next four years educating themselves on the distillation process and working on a label and bottle design. Venom Vodka – made from a natural corn base which is distilled five times, filtered six and happens to be glutenfree – hit the San Diego market in December of 2011. The Washington State market soon followed. Kim boasted, “The first year we launched we received a gold medal in taste from the Micro Liquor Spirit Awards.” Name: Profession: Community: Hobbies: Favorite Local Spots:

To date, 10,000 bottles have sold. In Washington Kim’s partner has a distributor, but here in California he is self-distributing. Since managing over 200 locations is difficult, he plans to partner with a distributor and hopes to have country-wide distribution for Venom Vodka next year. For those wishing to create their own business, Kim advises selecting a passion, doing research and acquiring the proper funding. As a father, Kim is proud of raising four children. He was touched when his daughter Kimberly introduced herself at his fire station. In his free time, Kim likes to spend quality time with his wife and children. He mentioned, “Family is what it’s all about.” Kim also believes in giving back to his community. He is a Rotarian for the Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary and is a member of the Carlsbad Firefighter’s Union. He consistently donates a portion of his Venom Vodka proceeds to various firefighter charities each year. After losing his daughter Kendra in 2001 to sudden cardiac arrest, he and his wife raised money to place automated external defibrillators in all of the Carlsbad schools. “For that,” Kim explained, “we received the Channel 10 Leadership Award. It is one of my greatest honors.” ¢

Kim Blaylock Co-Owner of Venom Vodka (Retired Battalion Chief, Carlsbad Fire Department) Carlsbad since 1976 Racquetball, waterskiing and playing Texas Hold’em One of my favorite spots is Terramar Beach in Carlsbad. There are also so many fine eateries in Carlsbad Village so it’s hard to say, but it’s difficult to beat having dinner and a cocktail while watching the sunset on the patio at Dini’s Bistro.

A Solid Foundation CCF GRANT AWARDS CELEBRATION PROVIDES SUPPORT BASE FOR THE CARLSBAD COMMUNITY

T

his year marked the 7th Annual Grant Awards Celebration for the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation (CCF), a branch of the San Diego Foundation. CCF generously awarded $104,000 to seven local nonprofit organizations. These grants will be used to promote stronger leadership, engagement and volunteerism within the Carlsbad community. The programs that received funding include the Rotational Shelter Program at Interfaith Shelter Network of San Diego, the CHSTV program at Carlsbad High School’s Television Booster Club, Friends Helping Friends at Kids for Peace, STEM Education & Career Exploration program at Encuentros Leadership, Carlsbad Science Day at the Carlsbad Educational Foundation, Clean Beach Coalition project at I Love A Clean San Diego, and ENGAGE CARLSBAD! Connecting Commerce and the Community program at Sustainable Surplus Exchange. “We’re honored to present the CCF grants to these outstanding organizations,” said Dale Isaacs, Grants Committee Chair. “CCF is grounded in the belief that community leadership and volunteerism are the building blocks for broader community engagement. These grantee programs demonstrate how local organizations are supporting our community in creative ways.” According to CCF, the late Matt McLaughlin has bestowed a legacy gift onto The San Diego Foundation for use by affiliate foundations in North County San Diego. Due to the Live Here, Give Here Matching Program, all CCF membership generated grant-making funds will be matched.

Pam Valinet, Chair of CCF, stressed the importance of building a community endowment for the benefit of the area. CCF is devoted to “improving the quality of life and meeting emerging needs in Carlsbad, providing funds annually to local organizations and causes, and giving the community a vehicle for legacy planning and gifts that will benefit Carlsbad now and forever,” she stated. ¢

Village Mural Art Hunt CARLSBAD ARTIST BRYAN SNYDER TAKES RESIDENTS ON AN INTERACTIVE HUNT IN THE VILLAGE

C

arlsbad artist Bryan Snyder recently presented a Carlsbad village-wide painting and mural art hunt, unveiling his newest creative project: “Carlsbad’s Biggest Art Hunt” in The Village. About 100 participants showed up, wandering through the streets of The Village in search of Bryan’s artwork, hoping to find a few of the seventeen murals scattered around the area. Hunt maps were provided, which directed participants throughout The Village to local businesses that have displayed Bryan’s work for years. Nine murals were painted on walls outside of the businesses, and eight paintings were housed inside. A total of fourteen businesses, including Giacoletti Music, Paul Henry Furniture, and Señor Grubby’s were a few of the businesses that have served as canvases for Bryan’s art. The hunt was Instagram-based and the first ten participants who found, photographed, and uploaded each piece of art to Instagram won a Bryan Snyder Doodle print. Bryan thought of the Instagram-based interactive hunt himself. “Sometimes I feel like I create art so I have something to market,” Bryan said. “I love the challenge of connecting people through creativity, technology, and art.” As participants searched, Bryan worked on his newest Doodle piece: “Doodle’s Beach Day”. The piece was inspired by Carlsbad and his family, and continues his series of what he calls Reminiscent Pop Art. “Through Doodle iconography, I attempt to resurface long forgotten childhood memories,” Snyder said. “For a brief

t might surprise people to know that Adoley Swaniker is a huge thrill-seeker. The 16-year-old Carlsbad High School student loves scary roller coasters, jet skis and dune buggies – skydiving and bungee-jumping are high on her bucket list. But looking at her myriad travels and interests, maybe it’s not so surprising. Adoley has traveled abroad to Ghana, South Africa, Zimbabwe and England, and she numbers law and international business among a large group of career interests. “Whatever I do,” Adoley relayed, “I want it to involve meeting new people and traveling all over the world.” At school, Adoley enjoys meeting new people through various clubs and activities. She is the vice president of the Red Cross Club and member of both the National Honor Society and California Scholarship Federation, as well as being selected to serve as member of the Student-Superintendent Advisory Council. This past year she decided to try track for the first time, making varsity and advancing all the way to the Avocado West League Finals in her hurdles events. “I was proud to receive the ‘Most Improved’ award because I worked so hard.” Her first love, though, is soccer. Chef’s Name: Michelle McDonough Family: Lily – 6-year-old Mastiff-Ridgeback mix Community: Carlsbad Hobbies/Interests: Cooking, teaching people how to cook, nutrition, gardening, yoga, wine tasting, travel, spending time with family and friends Favorite Local Activity: Playing beach volleyball at Ponto and shopping at the Carlsbad Village Farmers’ Market About the Recipe: The fresh vegetables and herbs of the autumn season inspired this dish. I would cook this as a vegetarian main course or as a side dish for grilled and/or roasted meats. Leftovers served cold make a great salad! About the Chef: My earliest memories involving food were my father planting a strawberry garden outside my bedroom window and my mother teaching me how to make strawberry shortcake. Little did I know growing, preparing, and eating fresh foods at such an early age would turn into a personal motivation and career! In 2004, I graduated from The Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Portland, OR. The contagious Northwest localism and farm-to-plate ingredients created a desire to learn more about seasons and regions, and inspired me to find new ways of preparing fresh foods to live a sustainable, healthy lifestyle. After graduation, I apprenticed in Denali National Park, AK and learned about wild game meats and fresh caught seafood. After Alaska, I accepted another apprenticeship at The Woodstock Inn in Vermont which advanced my culinary skills involving French cooking methods and classical New England cuisine. My third culinary adventure took me to Peru for four months, where I studied Peruvian cuisine. After honing my savory skills, I accepted a position with Specialty’s Cafe & Bakery in downtown San Francisco. This position plunged me into the art of artisanal scratch-baking by producing more than sixty baked goods all fresh daily. I currently work as a sales manager for Chuao Chocolatier in Carlsbad. The craft and creative workplace is very rewarding. My passion is matched with a hospitable personality. I enjoy meeting people with varying degrees of cooking skills and experiences. My desire is to teach our community sustainable cooking skills and about the foods they eat, shaping healthy lives and families. To contact me visit www.bountiful-gourmet.com. ¢

The Schmidt Family Song THE SCHMIDT FAMILY LOVES A SONG, A STAGE, AND A SPORTS FIELD by LIZ ONUFER | photos by Lauren Nygard Photography

omewhere between a song, a stage, and a sports field you can find the Schmidt family – Jill and Joel and their kids, Lydia and Ryan. Residents since 2000, this active and creative family appreciates the good life in Carlsbad. But song and stage aren’t just hobbies for this family. Joel is a professional musician and actor, and while Jill may spend her days teaching elementary school at Vista Unified School District, she’s as comfortable on a stage as she is in the classroom. In fact, the stage is where the couple met in the

After the couple married, they relocated to Carlsbad for the weather and lifestyle. The performance gene seems to have been born into the kids, as well. “We have passed our love of theatre on to the kids, so we have become involved with Carlsbad Community Theatre (CCT),” Jill said. Soccer takes center stage when she plays for the Carlsbad United F.C. soccer organization. Lydia’s match is her younger brother, Ryan, 10, who will begin school at High Tech Middle this fall. Ryan most recently played the role of Roger in 101 Dalmatians with the CCT. Equally as competent on the field, Ryan plays football for Carlsbad Pop Warner and rugby for the Carlsbad Thunder Rugby Club. Being involved and active in the community is important to the Schmidt family. Jill volunteers as a Girl Scout leader, and Joel coaches soccer with Carlsbad United F.C. Around town, the family’s favorite spots include the “JOEL HAS SONGS FOR Batiquitos Lagoon, the beach, ALL OF US AND SOME Greek Corner Café, and Tip Top OF THE KIDS’ FRIENDS, Meats. The City will continue their work and has committed to improving Tamarack Beach access and its surrounding areas. New benches have just been added and the bathrooms will be getting a makeover which includes fresh paints, an epoxy floor, new fixtures and partitions, an upgraded electrical system, and a refurbished roof with new skylights. The City will also restore the coastal bluff along the seawall and add new vegetation. Replanting is expected to begin this fall.

Green Dragon Tavern and Museum Creates a One of a Kind Experience

he Green Dragon Tavern and Museum redefines unique; welcome to the museum, tavern, a New England inspired restaurant, coffeehouse, bookstore, and event space all under one roof. The business may be the new kid on the block in Carlsbad, but the concept is one drawn from history. Originally located in Boston, the Green Dragon Tavern was the home of American history; when Paul Revere departed on his famous ride from its front doors and secret meetings took place inside to plan the Boston Tea Party. Today, the owner and museum benefactor is an avid collector who is dedicated to sharing his collection of documents from the

times of the pilgrims to the Revolutionary War. Knowing people visit museums when it rains, which rarely happens in San Diego, “he decided to build a venue around his collection to encourage visits,” explained John Lek, Senior Vice President and General Manager. “We know that not everyone has the time or resources to travel back East and immerse themselves in our history so we brought a small piece of that to Southern California for anyone who loves history, great food, or is searching for a new and unique venue to call their own.” Unique is certainly true for this 22,000 square foot venue. Located directly off I-5 at the Palomar Exit, the historically themed building stands out amongst its neighbors. The choice of location was an intentional one. “We selected the community of

Carlsbad for its diversity, impressive civic and entrepreneurial leadership, and family oriented culture,” John stated. The focus on community is also drawn from the Green Dragon’s roots. “Taverns and coffeehouses were the epicenter of community during those times and our goal is to be such a location for our local community,” acknowledged John. Additionally, the museum is partnering with local schools to coordinate field trips and guided tours.

POSITIVE ROLE MODELS

HELPING YOUTH REACH THEIR POTENTIAL AT THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF CARLSBAD photos by Lauren Nygard Photography

As you read through each issue of 08/10 Magazine, you are reminded how promising and bright the future of our community is thanks to the articles about our amazing youth and rising stars. In this issue, we wanted to spotlight the wonderful people whose goal is to help all young people of Carlsbad and surrounding areas reach their full potential and form a solid foundation to build a successful life around. In the following pages we talk with Brad Holland, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad, about the history of the organization and how it has grown and evolved for the benefit of everyone in our community.

30 • 0810Magazine.com • September | October 2014

Q&A with Brad Holland, CEO Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad WHAT IS THE HISTORY BEHIND THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF CARLSBAD VILLAGE BRANCH?

HOW MANY CHILDREN DOES THE CLUB SERVICE ON A DAILY BASIS?

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad has served nearly 80,000 youth since it opened its doors in 1952 as the Carlsbad Boys Club. At first, the Club functioned mostly as a recreational site where young boys found a safe, fun-filled, nurturing environment. It served as a “home away from home” for many single-parent working families. In 1992, the Club officially changed its name to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad. Over the past sixty-two years, the Club’s original location on Roosevelt St. in The Village of Carlsbad has been renovated five times. The most recent renovation, completed in 1999, marked the most dramatic changes in the Club with the addition of a dedicated technology center, covered swimming pool, gymnasium, and teen center.

The Village Branch serves an average of 175 children daily.

PLEASE DESCRIBE THE CURRENT STRUCTURE OF THE CARLSBAD VILLAGE BRANCH. Today, the Club emphasizes teaching positive life skills, provides educational enhancement, as well as a full spectrum of arts, recreation, and leadership development opportunities. Members are given the freedom to make their own choices of what activities they’d like to participate in, gaining independence and self-confidence in the process.

WHAT FACILITIES AND AMENITIES DO YOU OFFER AT THE CLUB FOR BOYS AND GIRLS TO USE? The Club is facilities-based – an actual neighborhood building designed solely for youth programs and activities – and satisfies the age-old desire for kids to have a place to truly call their own. Our Village Branch features an indoor pool, gymnasium, technology center, arts and crafts area, dedicated Teen Center as well as a “tween” room, as well as other program areas.

PLEASE DESCRIBE YOUR AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS. Afterschool programs are varied and grow organically based on member interest, but typically include Power Hour (homework help), Reading Club, Garden Club, Globetrotters, Healthy Habits, Triple Play, Torch and Keystone Clubs (leadership development), as well as an array of other activities.

WHAT KIND OF CAMPS DID YOU OFFER THIS PAST SUMMER? Summer is the time for fun, friends, and field trips, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad stands ready to provide all this and much, much more for our members at a very reasonable cost. Camp is available Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. A “Leader In Training” program is available to teens, providing them with an opportunity to earn community service hours and be even more involved in the day to day activities of the Club.

HOW DOES ONE GET THEIR KIDS INVOLVED WITH PROGRAMS AT THE CLUB? It’s easy to become a member! Simply visit our website at www.bgccarlsbad.org or call 760-729-0956 for our Village Branch.

PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOUR STAFF. HOW ARE THEY TRAINED TO PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL, ENRICHING, AND FUN OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHILDREN?

DO YOU HAVE ANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME? WHAT IS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE?

Full-time, trained youth development professionals provide positive role models and mentorship. Volunteers provide key supplementary support.

Various volunteer opportunities are available, including working with our members, serving on our board of directors, working at a special event, or assisting with our sports leagues.

WHAT KIND OF FEES ARE INVOLVED WITH HAVING BOYS AND GIRLS ATTEND PROGRAMS AT THE CLUB? DO YOU OFFER ANY SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL AID TO FAMILIES IN NEED?

HOW DOES ONE GO ABOUT PROVIDING ITEMS THAT THE CLUBS ARE IN NEED OF? WHAT ARE THE TOP FIVE ITEMS THAT YOU’RE IN NEED OF MOST?

Our fees are extremely low – only $50 annual membership fee plus $50 per month for the afterschool programming. No child is ever turned away due to inability to pay.

Our biggest need is financial – our annual budget is just over $2 million, and at the start of each year we start at $0.

PLEASE TELL US HOW ONE GOES ABOUT BECOMING A SPONSOR OR SUPPORTING THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS FINANCIALLY. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad is nearly 100% funded by local donors. Donations may be made securely online by visiting www.bgccarlsbad.org.

WHAT SETS THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF CARLSBAD APART FROM OTHER CLUBS WORLDWIDE? With little fanfare or commotion, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad has become a vital part of the Carlsbad community’s social safety net. We are proud of our rich history of service, and the impact that we have had on so many young lives.

THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF CARLSBAD OFFERS NEW TEEN PROGRAM AT CHS

T

he Boys & Girls Club of Carlsbad (BGCC) now offers a new club for high school students attending Carlsbad High School (CHS). Known as “The Armory,” the club will provide students with the opportunity to participate in activities similar to those at the Boys & Girls Club. Some of these activities include tutoring, intramural sports such as dodge ball, softball, tennis and more, and community service projects. Volunteers from Cal State San Marcos, Palomar, and MiraCosta Colleges will offer their tutoring services to students in need. “The projects will satisfy each student’s requirement for community service hours at school,” said Pat Maldi, BGCC Director of Marketing and Special Events. Since the teen years are a critical time in an adult’s development,

the club hopes to teach the young adults about the importance of good decision making, service and more through the program. Pat noted that since transportation from school to the Boys & Girls Club is sometimes an issue, the new program will contribute greatly. Teens will be able to actively participate in afterschool programs that are convenient and beneficial for them. The teen program is available at no charge starting this school year, Monday through Thursday. Each day will focus on a specific activity. “We want the program to grow organically, and our intentions are to expand to Sage Creek High School as well,” explained Pat. couple of years ago, Rancho Carlsbad Country Club resident Cheryl Sutcliffe attended a packing session for an organization called Operation America Cares (OAC). This group collects, assembles, and ships care packages to U.S. troops serving overseas. Cheryl assisted in creating packages filled with comfort items, entertainment, snacks, hygiene products, and letters of encouragement. From that moment on, she was hooked.

The network seeks to support America’s soldiers and thank them for their bravery and many sacrifices as they serve to protect our country. In addition to reading, Facebook, cross-stitch, and music, one of Cheryl’s favorite things to do is to serve others– OAC is the perfect outlet. “‘Support our troops’ is not just a bumper sticker,” she explained. “Your generosity demonstrates to our troops serving away from home that we recognize and appreciate their sacrifices on our behalf.” “OAC is a nonprofit

foundation and operates with 100% volunteers and donations,” Cheryl continued, “so every dollar we receive goes directly to the care packages.” They try to send a minimum of 150 care packages each month – over 1,800 per year. If Cheryl could grant OAC a wish, it would be for their postage to be paid for one year. Much of her spare time is spent preparing customs forms to send out these bundles of hope, so it is a compelling wish. The group is always looking for volunteers to help with the packing

TIPS ON HOW TO USE WATER WISELY THIS SUMMER

by TORI MORRISON

A

ccording to the City of San Diego, June 1 marked a change in the amount of irrigation time San Diegans are allotted in order to accommodate the demanding warmer days of summer. The City has declared, “From June 1 through Oct. 31, when the weather is hotter, the public must water their landscape prior to 10 a.m. in the morning, and not until after 6 p.m. in the evening, to lessen evaporation and get the most out of their water use.” Steps can also be made to conserve water within the household. Here are some tips on how to use water more efficiently at home.

1.

Plug the sink or bath instead of running the water to rinse your razor, or wait for the water to adjust to your desired temperature.

6.

Check your hoses, faucets and appliances regularly for leaks.

2.

Use your dishwasher. Dishwashers save more water and energy than washing dishes by hand. Energy Star dishwashers are more energy efficient than older models, so they end up reducing water waste. If washing dishes by hand, scrap food in the trash before washing, plug the sink, and then wash.

3.

Avoid playing with recreational water toys that require a considerable amount of water. Try water guns or water balloons for some fun in the sun.

4.

Instead of using the hose to clean sidewalks, garages and driveways, grab a broom.

5.

Recycle water. If you drop ice cubes, or need to get rid of water you used to steam vegetables, don’t waste it. You can use the water to feed plants, or turn the excess water into a soup.

40 • 0810Magazine.com • September | October 2014

7.

Place tissues into a trash can instead of flushing them.

8.

Purchase a plastic or aluminum water bottle. It will cut down on the amount of water you waste washing glasses.

9.

Wash your car on your lawn. That way your lawn will get watered at the same time.

10.

Join a community pool instead of wasting water on a personal pool at home. ¢

Lead Me Down the Garden Path CELEBRATING CARLSBAD’S SECOND COMMUNITY GARDEN Photos by CCGC

T

he City of Carlsbad and the Carlsbad Community Gardens Collaborative (CCGC) recently announced an Open House event at the new Calavera Schoolhouse Community Garden. The ribbon cutting had an unveiling of interpretive signage as well as staff and volunteer acknowledgements. Carlsbad City Council members, along with Parks and Recreation staff, CCGC board members and the garden committees of both the Harold E. Smerdu and Calavera Schoolhouse Community Gardens were present for the event. Festivities included presentations featuring Chef Michelle McDonough on healthy cooking with herbs from the garden and Jim Duffy, “The Pepper Guy,” brought his knowledge of growing and cooking sweet and spicy peppers. Michelle graduated from the Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Portland, OR and has a love of gardening and cooking that made her a terrific speaker for the event. Jim was

inspired by peppers when his coworkers began sharing sauces and salsa recipes in 2003. In 2004, his passion truly began when he started his chili garden with 100 plants. Another celebration of presumed oldest garden in San Diego, Carlsbad’s original community garden – Harold E. Smerdu Community Garden – marked its thirtieth birthday. There was also a composting demonstration by one of the local Girl Scout troops, a children’s activity table, and a variety of gardening displays. The event, interpretive signs, outdoor classroom and garden amenities were made possible by a grant from the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation. The garden was named in honor of the small schoolhouse and children’s garden that occupied the land in the early 20th century. ¢

A New Elementary in

a Home-Like Setting LePort School Carlsbad Village Makesphotos by Learning Meaningful and Enjoyable Richard Unten

If

you’re looking for a small elementary school with a nurturing environment, you should visit LePort School Carlsbad Village. “We offer an authentic Montessori program. That means children receive individual or small-group lessons with scientifically designed materials, and then practice to mastery – instead of just memorizing facts to regurgitate on tests,” explained Letty Rising, Head of School. “For example, the Montessori Golden Bead material, with its bead units, tenbars, hundred-squares, and thousand cubes, enables students to truly understand and master place value addition and subtraction.” LePort’s ultimate goal is to deliver Knowledge for Life: a deep, integrated, complete knowledge base that students retain and can apply long after they graduate LePort. LePort School Carlsbad Village is located in a former mayoral home complete

with a full kitchen, library, courtyard, lush gardens, and a large grassy field surrounded by stunning mosaics. In this serene setting, teachers often bring learning outside where students study pre-historic fauna, observe tortoises, and work in the fresh air. Ms. Rising joined in January after an extensive career as a teacher and principal at several public and private Montessori schools. “I jumped at the opportunity to lead this unique program,” she explained. “It’s wonderful to work with a small group of students, to get to know each child, each parent. We can genuinely motivate every student by tapping into his/her curiosity, by connecting the curriculum to his/her interests, rather than pushing extrinsic rewards like stickers or grades. I just love it when a child discovers a passion for, say, geography – and I can leverage that passion to get her reading, writing, thinking.” This focus on engaged, joyful learning translates into happy, eager students. “As

OUR

TOWN Dive Into San Diego's History at Old Town by JESSICA WOODS | photos by Sandé Lollis

O

ld Town, San Diego harks back to the roots of San Diego’s early days as a settlement. There’s loads of history and lots to see packed into a few blocks between the I-8 and I-5 freeway, including the historic parks and infamous Whaley House. For a more mobile experience, the Old Town Trolley Tours offer sightseeing of Old Town and beyond from the comfort of an old-school trolley. The Old Town Historic Park appears to be straight off a Hollywood movie set. You can just picture the cowboys atop their horses and ladies with hoop skirts parading down the main way. Visit a traditional adobe house, La Casa de Estudillo, the First Brick Courthouse, the Seeley Stables where horses and carriages were once stored, and many restored homes of historic San Diego families. A short distance away is Presidio Park, with the Junipero Serra Museum and Bazaar Del Mundo specialty shops. Above Old Town is a plot of land known as Heritage Park. Take a step back in time in these restored Victorian homes where you can get a glimpse of what life was like in these regal estates. But when it comes to a particular house in Old Town, be careful of what you find! The Whaley House – it’s a place that you dare your friends to step into. Are those footsteps you’re hearing? Did you feel a chill? Known as one of the most haunted spots in America, the Whaley House is open for daytime and nighttime tours, and perhaps you’ll get a ghostly visitor or two. If you aren’t brave enough to step inside, you can walk around the outside and tour the gift shop.

DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS 2014 produced by SOHO (Save Our Heritage Organization) This Nov. 1 and 2, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) 2014 comes back to Old Town. The annual celebration honors those who have passed and attributes to San Diego's Mexican heritage with color, music and more. This is not to be confused with Halloween and is not meant to be scary or morbid. Rather, families and friends come together to offer the spirits hospitality. Over fifty public altars will be

Visitors are encouraged to tour the altars to learn more about these figures and pay respects. A Tour of Altars Map will be available at www.sddayofthedead.org. Other family activities will include live entertainment, skull face painting, paper flowers, masks and more. ¢

Catch Up. Keep Up. Get Ahead. Mathnasium of Carlsbad Increases Students’ Math Skills and Confidence by LYDIA COBB | photos by Leslie Walker

A

4th grader with D’s in most of her classes came to Mathnasium of Carlsbad this year. After several months of consistent individualized sessions, all her grades improved and she now has A’s in math. “The confidence she acquired by being able to conquer her math had spilled over onto all of her other school subjects,” revealed Paul Walker, Owner of Mathnasium of Carlsbad. “Mathnasium offers a unique path to helping students catch up, keep up, and get ahead in math.” Mathnasium of Carlsbad uses the proprietary Mathnasium Method to help students in grades 2 through 12, and adult learners, to develop number sense, enabling them to understand all areas of math. Individualized learning helps instructors focus on the specific needs of each student. “Kids often come in feeling bad about their past experiences with math, but quickly have a 180-degree shift. They see that they no longer need to be confused by math,” added Paul. It is not unusual for students to increase their grades

by leaps – from C’s and D’s to A’s and B’s – in a relatively short time. Time-tested personal instruction, along with patience, and an encouraging environment, help struggling students to realize they can overcome what doesn’t make sense. Students can explain their reasoning and construct diagrams to work out math questions. Each instructor has completed up to forty hours of training in the Mathnasium Method. While some instructors have advanced math degrees, what is more important is that the instructor possesses excellent communication skills and has a positive attitude so that they can transition a student’s frustration into an “Aha!” moment. Owners Paul and Leslie Walker have lived in North County for more than twenty years. Carlsbad and San Marcos, which is also owned by the Walkers, are two of over 500 Mathnasium learning centers worldwide that positively impact children’s lives. The Carlsbad center will participate in the 4th Annual National TriMathlon in mid-October. Mathnasium’s TriMathlon is an annual math

event held over one weekend joining all the centers. Elementary school kids demonstrate their mathematical skills in a festive atmosphere, and every child’s participation earns a donation for his and her local schools. “At the end of the day we can reflect on the many lives that have been touched by our efforts. It is a good feeling,” added Leslie Walker. This math is easy: helping one student at a time adds up to many positive school and career path experiences. ¢

s we come to the middle of 2014 we have been asked by both buyers and sellers, “What advice do you have for us?” We received all different kinds of articles from many different publications, and we believe that knowledge is the best guidance. We also listen to our buyers and sellers when we spend time with them. From the information we have, we believe that interest rates will be rising gradually for the second half of the year and ending the year at about 4.4% per Freddie Mac. If you are a buyer, now is not the time to wait for the home prices to fall. Prices are still rising but at a much slower pace than a year ago. For twenty-six consecutive months the price gains have been in the double digits. Now is the time to sell! Sellers take advantage of the dip in mortgage rates now to bring more buyers to your home, and don’t be discouraged by the offers you are receiving from buyers. Most buyers are qualified to purchase more than what they are offering. Don’t become unreasonable with asking too much for your home. In most cases if you are flexible, buyers will be flexible.

Experience is key when you are deciding to purchase a home or sell your existing home. Twenty-six years of combined real estate experience is the reason why we are your best choice for all of your real estate needs. ¢
