Downsizing…

F

Derrick Breaux Publisher

or the past six years, my family and I have lived in the same house. This might not sound like anything out of the ordinary. In fact, it may sound quite normal. However, after taking out a notepad and spending some time putting the pencil to the paper, I came to the realization of a few things. For starters, this was the 23rd house that I have called home. With all of the moving around you would think that I was raised in a military family, but most of the moves were actually the product of my parents climbing the corporate ladder over the years. After further review, I calculated that this was the longest that I have ever lived in one house. In terms of square footage, it is also the largest house that I have ever called home. Over the years, we have been blessed with a growing family and plenty of visitors – both short-term and long-term. Before my mother passed away in 2010, she had a room at our house. For several years when my brother was touring the world with his rock band, he also had a room to come home to for short stays. Our kids referred to it as Tyler’s room even though he only used it a couple months a year. With our daughter recently moving out (well, sort of) and living in the dorms this year, my wife and I started discussing the possibility of downsizing. We recently pulled the trigger and made the move to my 24th house – a smaller home. Still having our two little kiddos at home, we weren’t brave enough to downsize in number of bedrooms, but we reduced our square footage by nearly 40% with this move. I’m still trying to figure out if reducing our square footage is the same thing as reducing our carbon footprint. Probably not! Preparing for any move can be a daunting task. Preparing for a move to a smaller house was downright overwhelming and consuming. I am amazed at how much “stuff” our family has accumulated over the past decade. We have spent the better part of a month making trips to the Salvation Army and the Goodwill donation centers. I’m on a first name basis with a couple of the kind employees that work there. My wife and I have decided to use this move as a family project – I’ll stop short of calling it a learning experience because that gives it more credit than necessary. The word “purge” has become a common conversational theme with our kids. Although they don’t like parting ways with the toys that they haven’t touched in years – but somehow fall in love with all over again when they find them tucked away in a closet or box – they are somewhat satisfied knowing that the unused toys are being donated, and children that may not have as many toys will get to play with them. We reinforce this with our kids each time we visit the donation centers, and I personally feel a certain sense of “parental” accomplishment in doing so. Even though we aren’t quite finished with our moving and purging at the time that I am writing this, it sure does feel great to know that we are entering into the New Year a lot lighter than before. It feels good to get rid of some excess and simplify things. Happy New Year! All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

t just 16 years old, Cody Lovaas has made quite the name for himself. Recently he was named as the 2014 San Diego Music Award’s Best New Artist – the youngest person to ever have been nominated for the award. “I take music and songwriting very seriously,” shared Cody. “It is my art and when you get recognized by industry people for something you work so hard for, it feels really great.” With extraordinary musical talent in guitar, ukulele, banjo, mandolin, drums, singing, and songwriting, Cody has been invited to play with some of the music industry’s most well-known names: Jason Mraz, Steven Tyler, and Ziggy Marley, to name a few. He regularly performs and was recently part of the concert line-up for the Switchfoot BroAm, an annual surfing event benefitting local children’s charities. Even with his celebrity-like status, Cody remains remarkably humble and he feels passionate about giving back to his community. “I have been a fortunate kid with a great family and support system,” shared Cody. “It makes me want to give back. Kids are the future and making good choices is the key to everyone’s future.” Cody’s desire to improve the world combined with his passion for surfing has prompted him to become a young

ambassador for two important charities: Natural High, an organization focused on substance abuse prevention, and SurfAid International, an organization that aims to use surfing as a way to improve the lives of people living in isolated regions. He is also involved with the Ronald McDonald House, Rady Children’s Hospital, Guitars in the Classroom, and Surfing with the Blind. “All of these involve children and people that did not choose their particular life threatening obstacles,” described Cody. “Those are the people and things I feel so passionate about.” Cody, who is currently homeschooled, has a busy yet fulfilling career. “I am currently working with a local videographer to begin providing video content through our social media sites,” explained Cody. “At the same time I am hoping to put out a new music video once a month.” As he looks forward to releasing singles in upcoming months, Cody explains where he finds inspiration: “As a songwriter I am inspired by what goes on around me. I feel I am an observer and a good listener. I also have a passion for surfing and the water and many ideas are inspired by the ocean.” ¢

Simple New Year’s Healthy Resolutions…

And How to Keep Them by RYAN BARENCHI, M.D.; Scripps Clinic, Encinitas

Ambitions are high after the ball drops on New Year’s Eve. It’s a new year and a chance for a new you. Millions of Americans set lofty health-related resolutions for the year to come, from reviving their gym membership and losing weight to quitting smoking. But before you spend money on a new workout wardrobe or go boom-orbust on the next fad diet, consider these modest tips for a healthier you in 2015: • Take advantage of our beautiful year-round climate. Walk at least 30 minutes three times a week. Gradually progress to walking every day. • Eat a diet that’s high in fiber, such as fruits and vegetables, but low in saturated fats. Eat less meat and more beans and nuts. • Drink six to eight glasses of water each day. • Get adequate sleep. Sleeping at least seven hours a night typically benefits adults by boosting alertness and decreasing their chances of causing a traffic accident. • Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher on exposed skin. • Stop using tobacco and cut back on drinking soda. See your doctor for cessation strategies. • Choose a primary care physician who’s a good fit and you’ll be more likely to keep your cholesterol under control, know your risk factors for diabetes, and undergo preventive health screenings that can help catch diseases in the early stages.

Choosing a healthier lifestyle is not just a verbal commitment – turning your new health choices into habits involves changing your mindset and understanding the true value of your personal health. Here are a few tips for making your changes permanent: • Don’t make comparisons. That new fad diet may be a quick fix but not a long-term solution – and just because it worked for your friend or neighbor doesn’t mean it will work for you. Your health is about you, so make it that way. • Take it one change at a time. Change is hard – don’t make it harder with multiple changes at once. • Energize naturally. Self-restraint takes energy, and the best way to replace your energy levels is with natural glucose from fruit sources – the artificial stuff won’t work. • Laugh it off. Feeling overwhelmed? Put on a funny movie, or watch your favorite cat video online – doing something that makes you laugh helps release tension. • It’s not a sprint – it’s a marathon. We all want instant gratification, immediate results, and the path of least resistance. However, obtaining optimal health doesn’t happen overnight. Set reasonable goals and manage expectations; slow and sustainable wins the race. • Take pride in ownership. Your health is priceless – value it that way. There are no trade-ins, upgrades, or return policies. Take pride in the most precious asset you own. • Pump up the jams. Grab your earbuds and play some of your favorite upbeat songs. Music can put you in a better mood and also serve as motivation. • Look in the mirror. The buck stops with you, and the person staring back in the mirror is the key to your success. Change is possible and can be attained with a mindful commitment to responsible living.

Ryan Barenchi, M.D., is a family medicine physician at Scripps Clinic in Encinitas. Dr. Barenchi provides care for all ages and treats a wide range of medical issues.

Looking for a new doctor? To find a Scripps physician near you call 760-292-2709 or visit www.scripps.org/0810.

:::: STUDENT STAR

Forever

Fascinated FROM MARTIAL ARTS AND SCIENCE TO PHOTOGRAPHY AND FILM DIRECTING, NIKKI KEISLER DOES IT ALL by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photo by Lauren Nygard Photography

A

t just three years old Nikki Keisler created her own film. “The term ‘film’ should be used lightly as it was pretty much just my mom filming me dancing to ‘These Boots are Made for Walkin’,” joked Nikki. Nevertheless, that fact served as a precursor to the talented person Nikki has become. At 16 years old, Nikki is an aspiring movie director, a skilled photographer, an experienced martial arts student, and a science-lover. It seems that nothing is too far out of reach for this superstar student. Nikki attends the 11th grade at Carlsbad High School, where she enjoys studying science. Her favorite class this year is AP Psychology. “I think I’m just a science person because last year my favorite subject was AP Biology,” she shared. “It is considered one of the hardest classes in the school, but it was just so interesting that it became really fun.” Nikki is also the head of the school’s theatre crew, where she finds and assembles costumes. “I love it because I get to spend time with my friends, as most of them are actors. Also, working backstage is extremely exciting,” she stated. “The best part of it is seeing the final product and knowing that I had a big influence in making it happen.”

Outside of school Nikki is heavily involved in karate – she has studied it for about 10 years, and most recently, she was tested for her junior black belt. “The particular style I do is called Go-Ju Ryu,” explained Nikki. “I am also involved in the Guidance on Leadership Development team at the dojo where, under the instruction of Michelle Enfield, we learn how to lead classes and instruct younger students.” In more recent years, Nikki has added “photographer” to her repertoire. “My interest began when my mom got involved in it,” said Nikki, who now assists her mom with photography at weddings.

“THE BEST PART OF IT IS SEEING THE FINAL PRODUCT AND KNOWING THAT I HAD A BIG INFLUENCE IN MAKING IT HAPPEN.” “As of right now, I have shot over 20 weddings between last year and this year,” she noted. As for her future, Nikki aspires to become a film director and is interested in attending UCLA or NYU for their renowned film schools. “Just watching films and wondering how things happened sparked an interest,” she shared. “My parents were the first in the family to move out of state to California and going to Hollywood and seeing all the movie studios was just so intriguing to me.” ¢

Chef’s Name: Jennifer Sattley Family: Husband – Patrick and French Bulldog – Kiwi Community: Mystic Point Interests: Cooking and eating, trying new restaurants, paddleboarding, walking on the beach, spending time with my adorable husband and dog Favorite Local Activity: Paddleboarding at the Carlsbad Lagoon About the Recipe: I adore crème brûlée, so what could be better than crème brûlée for breakfast? This overnight crème brûlée french toast tastes like glorious crème brûlée and can be thrown together in 15 minutes then refrigerated overnight so in the morning you simply pop it in the oven and out comes golden caramelized toasted outside, subtly creamy inside. This french toast is out-of-this-world delicious for special occasion breakfasts like birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day, or Christmas, but also easy enough to make for everyday. You are going to want to make this everyday. About the Chef: I grew up in Poway and have lived in Carlsbad for over eight years. I received a B.A. in interior design from the Design Institute of San Diego, but I have always been most passionate about being creative in the kitchen. Finally, after my kidney transplant in October 2013, I was bursting with more energy than I had had in years, so after the urging of friends, I started www.carlsbadcravings.com in February 2014 where I share only my tried-and-true daringly delicious recipes – or what I like to describe as “extraordinary flavors out of everyday ingredients.” I have been blessed with many miracles in my life including a double lung transplant at age 16 due to cystic fibrosis and my recent kidney transplant. I wrote about my heroic donors who have made my very life possible and honored my brother who passed away from cystic fibrosis in my book, My Heroes Ask Wallflowers To Dance. At www.carlsbadcravings.com you will find my latest craving creations and what I call “soul food,” or life lessons I have shared at various speaking opportunities. Stop by and find food to nourish your heart, soul, and belly! ¢

T

he Levin family – consisting of parents Moses and Raechal and children Luna and Joshua – embraces an outdoorsy, “green” lifestyle. All have successfully adjusted to living in Olde Carlsbad after making the move from Evergreen, CO. Moses admitted, “We moved here to get out of the cold, and we chose Carlsbad for its excellent public school system.” Raechal added, “The quality of life here is top notch!” That’s saying something, because the Levins know a lot about living in different environments. For example, Raechal used to live in Kauai, which is where she first met Moses while he was visiting a friend there. Together the family once lived in Taos, NM, where they currently own a second home that they built themselves over the course of 15 years. Raechal stated, “It is a traditional adobe home that is self-sustaining.” The family’s ability to nurture their surroundings has benefitted their children's school, Jefferson Elementary. When asked if they wouldn’t mind planting a couple of apple trees

Moses shared, “We pulled weeds, moved rocks, dug holes, and even dug a channel to run a sprinkler system.” Both parents respect the mind/body balance found in nature, which is reflected in their chosen careers. Moses owns Green Earth Books, in which new and used college textbooks are recycled back to students. Raechal teaches yoga at the Carlsbad Village Yoga Co-op and to students at the Boys and Girls Club through Carlsbad Causes for Community's (C3) kids yoga program. She is also involved at Jefferson Elementary, teaching yoga to young students as part of their morning motion routine. Both children are also into yoga, in addition to numerous other activities. Luna dabbles in fashion design, dances competitively, has won the “Most Valuable Surfer” title by US Surf Camps in 2012, and was even crowned "Miss Gold Coast" at her first beauty pageant. She is also a member of Kids for Peace, an organization which raises funds for underprivileged kids and promotes the concept that kindness matters. Joshua used to be a competitive gymnast, but is now concentrating on karate. “He is also proving to be quite the aspiring young yogi,” Raechal proudly proclaimed. The Levins enjoy being outdoors and discovering new sights whenever they can. On Sundays especially, Raechal revealed, “If we’re not hiking or chilling out at the beach and surfing, then we’ll take a drive and explore someplace we’ve never been. We like to live in the moment!” ¢

Carlsbad Celebrates Habitat Management Plan The City of Carlsbad recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of its Habitat Management Plan, which has set aside almost 6,000 acres of natural open space since its establishment in 2004. The plan allows for the protection of endangered or threatened plants and animals and the enjoyment of rich nature preserves for the city’s residents. City of Carlsbad Senior Planner Mike Grim said, “The City of Carlsbad has a rich natural environment and is home to three lagoons, coastal sage scrub, oak woodlands, and other types of natural open space. The Habitat Management Plan is one reason Carlsbad is recognized as having some of the highest standards for open space in the entire region. [It is] a comprehensive biological approach to preserving natural land and creates a natural network where species can thrive.” Carlsbad remains the only city in North County San Diego with an approved habitat management plan.

With the help of more than 225 motorcyclists, former NASCAR driver and racing analyst Kyle Petty kicked off the 20th Annual Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America in Carlsbad. With the help of local communities like Carlsbad, riders travelled 2,800 miles and were able to raise $1.1 million dollars for Victory Junction, a camp created to enrich the lives of children with chronic illnesses. When asked about the charity ride Kyle said, “The scenery was amazing, but it was the spirit of the community that really made Carlsbad a special place to kick off the ride. The energy, sincerity, and generosity of our fans and supporters certainly set a positive tone that lasted our entire trip. I want to say thank you to all of those who came out to see us off, for caring about our mission and for giving your time and resources to enrich children’s lives.” For more information visit www.facebook.com/kpcharityride.

CHS Students Win for Courage in Journalism Students in the broadcast journalism and documentary film program at Carlsbad High School (CHS) were recently honored by the San Diego Press Club with the Drew Silvern Award for Courage in Journalism for their work on the film Invisible Threat. The film explores the immune system of the human body and discusses how diseases can spread in a population that is under-vaccinated. The film students came under attack early in the film project, but they chose to continue with their project and make the film despite the online bullying and criticism. When asked about the award, CHS teacher and film director Douglas Green said, “When we started this film project, we had no idea that our documentary would win praise, support, and endorsements from some of the most prestigious hospitals, universities, and health organizations in the country for teaching young people about disease, disease prevention, and the social debate surrounding vaccines. We are very proud of the award and grateful to the San Diego Press Club.”

CA “Most Braggadocious” State

HeyLets, a new social mobile app determined to help people share experiences without feeling social pressure to look cool or impress their friends, recently polled 2,500 Americans to rate the number of posts they typically make on potentially self-promotional topics on social media sites. The study found that California frequently engaged in selfpromotion, with 77% of people posting about job promotions, exciting events, memorable experiences, and more, winning the title “most braggadocious” U.S. state. California was followed by Washington, Nevada, Maryland, and then New Hampshire. Utah received recognition as the “most humble” U.S. state, with Oregon, South Carolina, and Kansas close behind. HeyLets also asked respondents about the top five most popular topics they discuss on social media sites. These included going on a special trip, attending a memorable event, meeting a noteworthy person, and sharing something nice your significant other did. Chargers Jewelry for a Cause

Game-day wear doesn’t just mean jerseys and face paint these days. Chargers Safety Eric Weddle has joined forces with local jewelry designers to create a Chargers-themed jewelry line, with a portion of the proceeds donated to battered women’s charities. Patrick Pickford, along with colleague Gerly Noland, was excited to start the project. “Eric is a very good friend of mine,” said Patrick. “It seemed like a perfect fit for us to collaborate on a Chargers-themed jewelry line in support of the cause and donate to those in need.” They plan to continue the collaboration with accessory items for men too. Eric and the designers say they have been overwhelmed by the support from the fans and the community response. “It means everything to give back to the community and those in need,” said Eric. an Diego’s brewing scene is booming these days, and we in North County are lucky enough to experience the best of the boom right here in our own communities. Craft breweries, also known as microbreweries, are independently owned and produce small amounts of beer,

allowing for higher quality and greater individualization than traditional breweries. Perhaps nowhere is this industry growing faster than in San Diego, which has become a beer-drinker’s dream destination – and not just for the beaches any more. Local breweries have been stepping into the international spotlight with their award-winning beers. The industry’s exhilarating growth shows no sign of slowing down. With the recent celebration of the 6th Annual San Diego Beer Week, we’re excited to offer an insider’s look at the best breweries North County has to offer. The craft brewers we speak to have a huge variety of differences in technique and taste, but they all share a deep-rooted passion for their products. We invite you to read along and see what the buzz is all about.

cheat sheet by TYLER MCELHANEY

W

e know, we know! You have been homebrewing for years now, and you and your friends will love the cascade hops you’re adding to the next batch of “John’s Love Potion Pale Ale,” but for the rest of us, we’ve compiled a quick guide of styles and explanations to some of San Diego’s more popular styles of beer. So the next time you’re ordering a flight of tasters,

go with a variety, and decide for yourself what you like in your beer. North County San Diego is on the forefront of the craft brewing revolution, so be sure you’re not left out of the loop.

Stout Stouts are dark beers usually made from roasted malt or roasted barley as the main source of flavor. While there is debate about the styles, stouts were traditionally the generic term for the strongest porters. The two styles have branched out to include hundreds of variations, but the basics remain: dark beers made from dark, roasted grains. Imperial stouts (or Russian Imperial stouts) have grown recently in popularity, especially in San Diego, for their high alcohol content (usually above 9%) and their dynamic flavor profile.

IPA, Pale Ale & Amber Ale India Pale Ale beers have quickly become the face of craft beer in San Diego and across the nation. Their bitter taste and sharp bite are synonymous with local flagship beers. The “pale” in pale ale beers refers to the pale malt used in brewing these types of beers. While differences between pale ales and IPAs usually lie in the latter, beer’s increased alcohol content and hoppiness, creative breweries push these boundaries increasingly. Local craft amber ales have a similar taste profile as a standard pale ale, with a sweeter flavor because of added amber malt during brewing. Variations of these styles include the Imperial IPA and Double IPA (also called a “San Diego IPA” outside of the area).

Wheat “Wheat” can cover a wide range of beers but are all brewed using a large proportion of wheat malt. Most wheat beers can often be categorized under Weizenbier, Witbier, and Sour styles. Weizenbier includes

Hefeweizen, a sweet and low hop beer that often includes citrus or spice notes. Witbier (“White Beer”) are similar, but use some additional fruit and spice notes and have a slightly more sour taste because of lactic acid. Sour beers are similar to Witbiers with added tart flavors and alterations to the brewing method.

Belgian While not a specific variation, Belgian or Trappist ales often share a common flavor profile (you’ve probably heard one of your friends comment “that tastes Belgian!”). Originating from monasteries across Europe, Belgian-style beer focuses on the balance between malt sweetness, hop bitterness, and aromas (usually fruity, spicy, or floral). Local beers brewed in this style are often called “abbey-style” ales as they don’t fit labeling requirements. Common styles that fall into this category are Enkel, Dubbel, Tripel, and even Quadrupel.

Pilsner & Lager While a pilsner (or pale lager) beer is a specific type of lager, these terms are often used interchangeably when referring to coldbrewed beer using bottom-fermenting yeast. Pilsners and American Lagers are often lightly hopped and aim for the highest level of drinkability. Because of the lower temperature of fermentation, these beers often have a cleaner, crisp taste. Local breweries have had success with variations of these styles to cater to the craft brewery lover’s palate. If you see an India Pale Lager on a menu in the future, be sure to give it a try!

tumblefoot Brewery founders Bill Randolph and Pat Horton began as home brewers in 2001. To honor their experience in those beginning years, Bill and Pat chose the name Stumblefoot to pay tribute to both their failures and successes, and most importantly, to their continued willingness to experiment. As an integral part of the North County brewing community today, Stumblefoot takes pride in their continued dedication to learning and sharing information with their fellow brewers and friends. Together the founders participate in many of San Diego’s home brewing clubs, from the Society of Barley Engineers to QUAFF Brewing Club, North County Home Brewers Association, and Mash Heads Homebrew Club. In 2012, Stumblefoot started their commercial adventure in San Marcos. At their tasting room on La Costa Meadows Dr., you can learn about their award-winning Imperial Dragon Kiss Stout, which recently earned a silver medal at the California State Fair. Or kick back and try their Schwarz Be With You Black Lager which won a gold medal at the 2013 San Diego County Fair International Beer Festival. Many of their brews have been honored for superior quality and taste, so whatever your preference in beer, you’re certain to find something you like. To discover more and see a list of the beers on tap visit www.stumblefoot.com.

DID you KNOW? In 2011, brewers and brewpubs generated a $299.5 million direct economic impact in San Diego County. The economic contribution of craft brewers is more than 1 ½ times greater than the economic impact of Comic-Con International, San Diego’s largest annual convention. Since 2011, the total number of craft breweries in the region has more than doubled. The largest craft brewing event in the region is San Diego Beer Week, which features more than 500 events and lasts from early to mid-November. Beer Week brings more than 20,000 participants to San Diego County.

n 1987, brother-sister duo Gina and Vince Marsaglia bought a pizza place in Solana Beach. It was in this original storefront on Pacific Coast Highway that Pizza Port – with its classic menu of pizza and chicken wings – quickly became a local favorite. In the early years, Vince noticed the restaurant’s additional storage space and decided to experiment with a new hobby – home brewing. Before long, he was brewing more than he could drink by himself, and after much encouragement from family, friends, and loyal Pizza Port fans, Vince and Gina decided to expand into the brewpub business. Pizza Port offered its first handcrafted beers in 1992. In 1997, they opened their Carlsbad location on the corner of Roosevelt St. and Carlsbad Village Dr. And in 2013, Pizza Port opened their Bressi Ranch location, which houses a brewing facility, brewpub, commissary, and their corporate office. Here Head Brewer Sean Farrel has been concocting a few new brews that will soon be the first three beers to launch in cans. Stop by this location to try ChronicAle, a mellow amber ale, Ponto, an IPA, and Swamis, a traditional IPA. Pizza Port’s continued success comes from their dedication to producing high-quality beer, delicious pizza, and a fun environment for people and families of all ages to enjoy. K

arl Strauss Brewing Company has been a San Diego staple since 1986, when renowned brewery consultant Karl Strauss was approached by his cousin Chris Cramer and business partner Matt Rattner to start their own microbrewery. Karl Strauss Brewing Company’s attention to quality and consistency had a ripple effect across the entire San Diegan beer community, and is partly responsible for the vibrancy of today’s industry. Karl Strauss Brewing Company hit the North County scene in 1999 with the opening of its Carlsbad location on Armada Dr. Next to Legoland and the Grand Pacific Palisades Resort, Karl Strauss Carlsbad’s onsite microbrewery provides 10 rotating beers on tap, a full-service bar, and brewery tours every day for the beer enthusiast and novice alike. CHS Champion Lancers

SENIOR AMBASSADORS SEEK TO INSPIRE THE YOUTH OF CARLSBAD

T

he Carlsbad High School (CHS) Champion Lancers recently visited nine elementary schools in the Carlsbad Unified School District (CUSD) to speak with students about making positive and healthy choices. When asked about the visits, Champion Lancer Dorin Coffler said, “We each shared our sport or activity along with the motto that represents us individually. After the presentations, we handed out our signed trading cards and had the chance to interact with the kids. We spent time just playing with them and answering questions they had. The kids are very excited to get the trading cards and meet the new Champion Lancers every year.” The program was established in 2012 by former CHS principal Dr. Matthew Steitz. The mission of the program is to provide role models for the youth of Carlsbad. These exceptional senior ambassadors are committed to the academic achievement and character of the young students of CUSD and model this by living with integrity and committing to a drug, tobacco, and alcohol-free life. Each of the ambassadors seeks to create connections in their community and motivate younger students to not only set goals and reach their potential, but to realize that they do not have to surrender to peer pressures to fit in within their school and community. The current Champion Lancers include Dorin Coffler, Jake Ummel, Kiana Pestonjee, Mac Harden, Max DeLoach, Rebecca Nasser, Ryan Little, and Shelby Lee. ¢

nimals of all shapes, sizes, colors, and breeds came out to strut their stuff and show off their holiday spirit at the recent Carlsbad Village Pets on Parade event at the Carlsbad Village Faire Shopping Center. The day of four-legged fun began with an adoption event and offered vendor and animal rescue booths for holiday shopping for pets and humans alike. All participants also had the opportunity to get a photo with Santa in front of the Village community Christmas tree. Other highlights included opportunity drawings, free popcorn, music and entertainment, and finally the parade led by Santa himself. All proceeds raised by vendor booths, photo sales, and drawings were donated to local nonprofit animal rescue SPOT. SPOT rescues dogs and cats from euthanasia at local animal shelters, places the animals in foster homes, and works on finding a forever home for each one. The organization holds adoption events, fundraisers, and educational presentations throughout the year. For more information and to find out how you can help visit www.spotsavespets.org. ¢

oosters is a contemporary men’s grooming center. Our barbers and stylists are updated on the latest styles while still providing that authentic barbershop experience without gimmicks or trendy themes. It’s a place for men to go to de-stress and walk out looking good and feeling incredible,” said Owner David Graves III. According to Graves, the first Roosters Men’s Grooming Center was opened in Lapeer, MI by Master Barber Joe Grondin. The goal was to step back in time and re-establish the traditional men’s grooming center with a classic American barbershop feel and a focus on providing quality service to men. Today, Roosters Men’s Grooming Centers are located across the country, and are committed to achieving 100% customer satisfaction. At the Roosters location in Carlsbad, the most popular service is the Gentleman’s Choice, a full-service haircut coupled with a seven-step facial shave process. “We also offer haircuts, signature shaves, beard trims, color camouflage (gray blending), and deep cleansing facial massages,” revealed Graves.

Regardless of the service that is provided, each client is guaranteed an individualized, relaxing experience. As stated by Graves, every cut and hairstyle is customized, with hair texture and bone structure taken into consideration. The client is involved with every step of the service and the stylist will make suggestions along the way to ensure that the client is completely satisfied with the end result.

New Plans for Local Parks

UPGRADES REVEALED AS PART OF PARKS MASTER PLANS

A

ccording to plans approved by the City Council, the City of Carlsbad will be adding new features and amenities to three community parks in the Carlsbad area. Upcoming improvements include the creation of an outdoor gathering space and a small amphitheater at Aviara Community Park, the addition of an indoor recreational facility and comunity garden at Pine Avenue Community Park, and the construction of a community center at Poinsettia Community Park. These plans resulted from a two-year process in which the city gathered input from the community to formulate a plan for Carlsbad’s future park system and recreation programs. Parks & Recreation Director Chris Hazeltine said, “What we wanted to do was take a very thoughtful look to make sure what we put forward in these master plans was what the community wanted to see today. Some of the existing plans were over 20 years old, and we wanted to make sure that they were current and timely.” The creation of a community space at Aviara Park will include family picnic areas, walkways, landscaped paths, decorative seat walls and fire pits, and a small community room with warming kitchen and food and beverage service. Improvements at Pine Avenue will include an indoor recreational space, a teen center, fitness space, a landscaped garden and activity center, as well as lounges, offices, storage, and rooftop court space for sports. Poinsettia Park will see a new community

Documenting History Greg Nelson is Chronicling the History of the Boys & Girls Club of Carlsbad by KELLEY GUSICH | photo by Lauren Nygard Photography

W

hen he was nine years old, Greg Nelson came to Carlsbad from Arizona. His mother had to take two jobs to support the family, so she took the children to the Carlsbad Boys Club. “My first jobs were at the club sweeping the woodshop floor and cleaning the locker room every night,” he shared. When he graduated from Carlsbad High School (CHS) in 1967, Greg was hired as the athletic director and later became the aquatics director. He moved over to San Dieguito Boys & Girls Club for a number of years, then returned to Carlsbad to be the executive director of his now renamed Boys & Girls Club of Carlsbad (BGCC). “Since 1959, I have never not been a part of the club!” The BGCC has served over 75,000 boys and girls since its inception in 1952. With the many people who have worked over the past 60 years to keep the club’s doors open for the children of Carlsbad, Greg felt its history had to be preserved. He hired Marilyn Campbell to interview past board members, club members, presidents, and people of the community, and commissioned the chronicle of BGCC. It tells the story of their struggles and victories from the point of view of those who did the work to keep the club alive. Greg and his wife Barbi recently co-chaired the BGCC Capital Campaign to build a new clubhouse and made the largest donation in the club’s history toward the project. But his philanthropy doesn’t end with the BGCC. The Nelson Charitable Foundation is a supporter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has made it possible for 25 students to attend institutions of higher education while also supporting summer camps, church camps, and SDSU Aztec Athletics. In 2008 Greg was inducted into the Boys & Girls Club Alumni Hall of Fame, joining the likes of fellow inductees such as athletes Steve Young and Steve Largent, actors Cuba Gooding, Danny Glover, and Queen Latifah, and even former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz. Greg Nelson and his four children are all CHS graduates, and he loves the city, the beaches, the Village, and the people. Greg loves Carlsbad and Carlsbad loves Greg. “I love that people support our community,” he confided, “and all the wonderful organizations that make Carlsbad the winner it is.” ¢

Mostess The Hostess with the

Guidelines for the Season by TORI MORRISON

If

you have been chosen to host this year’s New Year’s Eve cocktail party or special Valentine’s Day celebration, you’ve been given one of the best gifts of the season – the chance to share this special time of the year with your loved ones and transform it into an unforgettable occasion. In today’s fast-paced society, it can be difficult to sit down and start planning for these special events, but it’s also a time to embrace that challenge and transform a party into the event of the year. Don’t fret, we are here to help you slip into those hostess with the mostess shoes with the ease and grace of a seasoned professional. Here are some tips, tricks, and ideas that guarantee your guests will have a good time this season.

Preparations

Party Time

1. Fancy touches

1. Choose the mood

• Crystal dishes make a great impression, even if they are filled with appetizers you took straight out of the bag. • Play with the decorations. Accents, including paper star ornaments, wall confetti, festive drink stirrers, streamers, and garlands greatly add to a New Year’s party. • For Valentine’s Day, try using baked goodies, cards, candles, or candy as center pieces or center piece accents.

2. Perfect that playlist

• It adds to the ambiance, contributes to conversation, and makes everyone feel more comfortable.

3. Love those lists

• Keep a to-do list on hand or stick Post-it notes around the house to remind you of tasks you need to complete before guests arrive.

4. Food selection

• Some of your friends will have special dietary needs, others are just really picky. With food it’s best to stick with simple and delicious. It’s also important to remember your vegan friends and ensure you have fare they will enjoy too.

5. Don’t dirty the dishwasher

• Always remember that the mood or vibe you give off is what sets the tone of the party.

2. Introduce other guests

• You’ve brought everyone you love to celebrate this special occasion so make sure they get to know one another.

3. Embrace conversation

• Encourage others to embrace it too and make sure your topics are inclusive.

4. Snap away

• Take photos of the event... heck, take a video! You can use them to review what ended up being successful and what could be improved upon. This will stop you from repeating dishes, and let you know which friends get along well.

5. Be gracious

• Thank your guests for coming by handing out party favors. Not only will this make them feel special, it’s also a great way to end the evening on a positive note. ¢

• Unload that helpful machine to prepare for the dirty dishes ahead.

CarlsbaDDS Pediatric Smiles by LINDA FRABL

photos by Tyler McElhaney

I

n this age of helicopter parenting, it is normal to be involved with the minute details of your child’s existence. Although this can sometimes be a hindrance for your child’s development, when it comes to dental care, children need their parents to be their advocates. Thankfully, Dr. Linh Tsai of CarlsbaDDS Pediatric Smiles is also a parent, so she understands and encourages parental involvement. She elaborated, “As a mother, I too, am concerned about the same issues many of my parents are: X-ray radiation, cavities, and cleanliness. This is why I personally review each patient’s chart prior to seeing them and make sure my care is individualized. I welcome parents/caretakers to accompany their children, and I will discuss in detail alternate treatments, the risks and benefits of no treatments, and I’ll take parents’ input into consideration and find a medium place so everyone feels comfortable with the proposed treatment plan.” Born in Vietnam, Linh grew up in Northern California, earned her undergraduate degree from UC Irvine (UCI), and had her pediatric dental residency training at USC. Accomplished in her field, Linh won the UCI Alumni Research Award for her work in cleft palate and palatal

suture closure, and in 2007 she became a boarded diplomat of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. She now applies her vast knowledge to CarlsbaDDS Pediatric Smiles, which she opened in 2008. As a pediatric office that provides comprehensive dental care for patients from ages 1 to 18, the décor has a lovely sea theme that immediately enchants and calms all patients. Linh added, “We strive to make each visit a pleasant experience! Our team’s common goal is to provide the best care for our patients.” That care includes offering such resources as laughing gas, oral sedation, and

even IV sedation with a board certified dental anesthesiologist, if necessary. Conscious of accommodating families, CarlsbaDDS Pediatric Smiles also has Saturday appointments and schedules siblings together whenever possible. So if you are a cautious parent hoping to find a pediatric dental office that treats your child with the same level of thoughtful attention that you yourself would, rest assured that CarlsbaDDS Pediatric Smiles won’t disappoint. Linh emphasized, “The inspiration to have my own office is so I can care for my patients the way I would for my own children.” What more could a parent ask for? ¢

CUSD Honored by College Board

DISTRICT NAMED TO HONOR ROLL FOR AP COURSE PERFORMANCE

C

arlsbad Unified School District (CUSD) was honored as one of 547 school districts in the U.S. and Canada named to the College Board’s District Honor Roll for increasing access to Advanced Placement (AP) coursework and student performance on AP exams. CUSD increased the number of students taking AP exams and 85% of students who took the exams earned scores of three or higher, up from 80% last year. Inclusion on the annual District Honor Roll is based on the examination of data from 2012 to 2014, including increasing participation in and access to AP classes, increasing or maintaining the percentage of exams taken by minority students, and improving performance levels from year to year. When asked about the importance of the distinction, CUSD Superintendent Dr. Suzette Lovely said, “Our board of trustees has made the expansion of AP classes a priority goal for the last several years. CUSD teachers, counselors, and principals have done an incredible job focusing their efforts in this area. We are extremely proud to have achieved this honor for two consecutive years.” As one of only three school districts in San Diego County to be named to the College Board’s District Honor Roll, Carlsbad continues to standout as a high performing district. CUSD’s focus is to raise the bar for all learners no matter where they may reside on the educational continuum. ¢

WHALE WATCHING Gray Whales Travel Through San Diegan Waters on Their Winter Migration by LAINEY KRAL

S

urfers and sailors aren’t the only ones who enjoy San Diego’s offshore playground, even in the depths of winter. Every year the eastern Pacific population of gray whales travels in small groups down the North American coastline towards the warm lagoons of the Baja California peninsula. Their annual voyage is considered the longest migration of any mammal. San Diegans are lucky to be able to witness this incredible venture – many gray whales can be seen here from midDecember through January, and from February through April on the return journey north. Gray whales typically span 49 feet in length and can weigh up to 40 tons. They can be recognized by distinctive light gray patterns on their dark gray skin. They also have a series of raised bumps on their backs, known as a dorsal ridge, rather than a dorsal fin. Gray whales live in two populations on either side of the Pacific – the western population is critically endangered with approximately 130 individuals, while the eastern population off the North American coastline has over 20,000 individuals. The eastern population spends much of the year in Alaskan waters in between migrations to Baja California. Want to see our giant visitors for yourself? There are plenty of ways to do so by land or sea. If you’re watching from shore, try to schedule your viewing between mid-December and mid-February, when

the whales travel closer to land. Great spots include the Birch Aquarium, Cabrillo National Monument, Scripps Park above La Jolla Cove, and Torrey Pines State Reserve. Gray whales dive for three to six minutes at a time before coming to the surface to breathe. They’ll blow three to five times before diving back down – when out watching, scan the water for spouts to find whales before pulling out the binoculars for a better view. For a closer vantage point, there are quite a few options to get out on the water. Many whale watching cruises offer on-board guides who can tell you everything you want to know about the guests of honor, plus guaranteed sightings or you get a second trip free. If you’re looking for an even closer encounter, try a tour that takes you out on a smaller, faster vessel – or even a kayak tour that lets you paddle within 50 feet of the giant mammals. ¢

ids for Peace (KFP) recently hosted their Friends Helping Friends event at Sage Creek High School. The one-day family festival was held in an effort to inspire a lifetime of service among growing kids and teens and families in Carlsbad. The event featured hands-on “service stations,” a peace flag collaborative art project, entertainment from Sam Baker and Friends, nonprofit spotlights, and local food vendors. Participating nonprofits included the Boys & Girls Club of Carlsbad, the Carlsbad Educational Foundation, Meals On Wheels, I Love A Clean San Diego, the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation, Interfaith Shelter Network, Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary Club, the Mitchell Thorp Foundation, SNAP, TIP, Hands of Peace, and Fresh Start Surgical Gifts. Other highlights included an inspiring speech from Mayor Matt Hall, visionary words from KFP emcees, lots of community connections, and an abundance of joy in all attendees. When asked about the event, KFP Co-Founder and Executive Director Jill McManigal said, “At Friends Helping Friends, it was clear to see that volunteerism, collaboration, and community pride are alive and well in Carlsbad!” ¢

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH

2014 is Ending on a High Note WHO IS EXPECTED TO BE THE BIGGEST HOME BUYING GROUP IN 2015? by GLENN HOLTZ & TANYA GABRIELLA

T

here are two reasons why the 2014 home sales are expected to end on a high note. According to CAR Newsline, new home sales rose 0.7% in the month of October for new, single family homes. In addition, pending home sales in California rose for the second month straight. These two items combined show high expectations for 2015. Who will be the biggest home buying group in 2015? According to Zillow and CAR Newsline, millennials! Millennials will overtake Generation X in 2015 due to a few key factors. First, there is an expected increase in rent prices next year. U.S. rents will outpace home values by the end of the year. Second, home builders will begin constructing more, less expensive homes. Finally, first-time home buyers will be a critical part of the housing market. The market is most favorable to first time buyers with a strong income growth among 23 through 34 year olds. Considering these factors, 2015 should be an exciting year. How does 2015 look? According to RISMedia and Chief Economist for NAR Lawrence Yun, existing home sales and home prices are expected to rise in 2015. This is thanks to improvement in inventory, slower price gains, and pent-up demand.

The best advice we have for our potential buyers and sellers is to contact us right away so we can start off the new year with a plan that will benefit you and the expectations you have for the future. We look forward to hearing from you! ¢

Hope Elementary School Gets New Mural LOCAL MOM PAINTS MURAL TO INSPIRE STUDENTS TO READ

T

here is a new mural in the Hope Elementary School Library. Local Hope volunteer and mother Anna Sousa spends a lot of time helping out in her children’s classrooms and recently had the idea to paint a mural. With support from Principal Richard Tubbs, Anna and fellow volunteer Melody Gutches got started on the painting right away. “I have been dreaming of creating a more permanent piece of art to brighten up our school for years,” Anna said. “We quickly decided the library was the best place to start as it could be enjoyed by all grades. I knew I wanted to paint a scene that would bring to life the idea that reading a great story can transport the reader to another world.” Anna and Melody spent over three weeks painting the 230 square foot mural on three walls of the library. Also featured in the mural are over 60 literary references, characters, or iconic images from classic children’s books. Students will recognize characters and items such as the Hungry Caterpillar, the Rainbow Fish, Flat Stanley, James’ giant peach, Aladdin’s lamp, or Harry Potter’s scarf. According to Anna, if students look closely, they can also spy a treasure chest from Treasure Island, the balloon from Around the World in 80 Days, the octopus from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and Ka from the Jungle Book, along with popular culture references such as Olaf from Frozen. Anna added, “Throughout the project, we had the full support of the whole Hope family – students, teachers, and parents checked on our progress daily with great interest and excitement. In the end I just wanted to create something lasting that my boys would think was cool.” For more information email Anna at sousasonthefly@roadrunner.com. ¢

San Diego Talent Jessica Sanchez Visits Home AMERICAN IDOL SEASON 11 FINALIST SPREADS HOLIDAY CHEER

L

ocal talent Jessica Sanchez, finalist on American Idol Season 11, recently spread some sweet holiday cheer to her hometown community with the help of M&M’S Crispy. Jessica returned to San Diego to surprise fans with holiday caroling and a special delivery of the newly relaunched candy. Born and raised in Chula Vista, Jessica has enjoyed singing since she was very young. “I started singing when I was two,” she said. “I took any opportunity I could to sing in front of other people – like at birthday parties or just in front of my grandmother’s friends – but I was so shy that I had to stare at the floor the whole time.” Before American Idol, Jessica represented San Diego on shows like Showtime at the Apollo and America’s Got Talent. While a contestant on American Idol, Jessica experienced an outpour of love and support from neighborhoods all over San Diego. After making it to the final two on the show, Jessica eventually signed a record deal with Interscope Records and has been hard at work on her music ever since. She released her debut album Me, You, & the Music in spring of 2013. She also recently released her new single “This Love” as a holiday gift to her fans. “The fact that I get to put out something that’s all my own is so exciting,” she gushed. “Music has always been what I want to do with my life, and these songs are all me.” ¢
