Traditions.
A
s we approach the holiday season, you can’t help but reflect back on family traditions and memories that most of us have been fortunate to grow up with. It’s very easy to turn on the “autopilot” and get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life – our work schedules, house duties, playing taxi driver for our children. The list goes on and on... I recently attended a business seminar in Las Vegas. A topic that came up frequently throughout the seminar was family traditions and memories – specifically childhood memories. To be honest, until I was asked to recall and analyze some of my best memories over the past 39 years, I had not given it much technical thought. Sure, everyone has memories – some that they hold dear to their heart and some that they may want to forget. But forcing myself to take a trip down memory lane proved to be a rewarding and enlightening exercise. I believe that there are a few types of memories (generally speaking) that are welcomed and tend to stand out in most people’s minds – the good memories and the memories surrounding family traditions. I can easily pull up the good memories. Childhood sports. Playing with friends in the neighborhood. Video game marathons. Derrick Breaux Family vacations and road trips. Awesome cardboard box forts! Publisher But one of the things that is easy to overlook is the stability that comes along with traditions. Most of our family traditions involved holidays. Growing up, there were always certain things that I could rely on. To name a few, I knew exactly what we were going to be doing on Christmas Eve every year. I knew what food would be served for Thanksgiving. I loved the annual family camping trip – always at the same lake and campsite. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I definitely found peace in the consistency that came along with these traditions. My son made me feel good the other day when we were discussing our upcoming holiday plans. My wife and I were bouncing a few different ideas around when he blurted out, “but we always cook gumbo on Halloween and Christmas Eve!” In his mind, I’m sure the little things like cooking a family favorite on certain days of the year are just “what we do.” But they are actually so much more than that. I intend to continue with as many of the traditions that have been passed along to me, and I hope that one day my kids will be able to reflect on these traditions and choose to carry them on and introduce them to their own families. To family, creating memories, and carrying on with great traditions. Happy Holidays! Derrick Breaux, Publisher

ow in its fortieth year, the Carlsbad Village Faire has grown to be so popular that it not only attracts people from all over Southern California, but also from other states. “The Carlsbad Village Faire was originally developed to bring attention to Carlsbad Village, the city’s downtown area,” said Ted Owen, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce’s president and CEO. “As anyone can see, in the last forty years this event has more than accomplished its original goal.” Vendors sold anything you could imagine: clothes, accessories, plants, art, and home decor. The international food court featured everything from Thai to Hawaiian cuisine. The Rotary Club of Carlsbad opened a beer and wine garden, complete with a large screen TV and live music enteratinment. The children’s area held games, a super slide, a bounce house, a rock climbing wall, and arts and crafts. Mark your calendars for May 4, 2014 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Nov. 2, 2014 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., when the next faires will hit the streets next. ¢

THE PUBLISHING The Face Behind the Program that is Building Confidence in Young Authors & Illustrators by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photos by Soul of Photography
W
hen Lisa Monaco-Gonzales wrote and illustrated a book as a child, she never could have imagined the doors it would open for her in her professional life. But having done just that, her book, titled Jesse’s Dream (which was written for an elementary school project), was successfully published several years ago by her own publishing company. “When I saw Jesse’s Dream for the first time, in print and published, this was a defining moment for me,” said Lisa. “Friends and their referrals began knocking on my door requesting my expertise on all topics publishing.” She was overjoyed by the experience, but couldn’t help but wonder what it would have been like to have had her book published as a child. This thought motivated her to find a way to help children who have a drive to write, illustrate and publish a book, and her concept for Publish My Book was born. Publish My Book is an enrichment program that offers young children the opportunity to become published authors and illustrators. “Typically, it is a one hour class that runs for eight weeks,” noted Lisa. “The materials are supplied by Publish My Book and the participants supply the imagination and creativity!” Several San Diego locations offer the program, including The Rhoades School, Mandala Daydreams Community Center, Girl Scouts San Diego, Ada Harris, and Diegueno Country School. Lisa resides in 92009 with her husband and two children. “With East Coast roots, the sun shining every day, and not a drop of snow to shovel, makes every day in La Costa a happy one!” she exclaimed. Today, Lisa is heavily involved with her community. “I am a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, Publishers and Writers of San Diego, and Read Local San Diego,” said Lisa. “I’m involved in various philanthropic activities with TAALK, Jeans for Justice, IVAT, and Darkness to Light.” But perhaps her main focus remains on her Publish My Book program, where she feels her biggest accomplishment is her students’ accomplishments. “My wishes for my students,” she said, “[is] they hold onto that cherished moment when they saw their book for the first time, in print and published, and their confidence and pride of ownership they gained from this experience becomes part of their DNA. Remember, ‘Yes I can!’” ¢

or San Marcos High School senior Chase Ladman and younger sister Lindsay, dedication is defined as a freestyle stroke. The star swimmers can be found at the pool for nine practices a week with North Coast Aquatics in La Jolla. The rigorous training schedule includes practice every day after school from 3 to 6 p.m., three days a week before school from 5 to 6:30 a.m., and three hours on Saturday. The commitment and rigor have paid off; Chase recently qualified for the Junior Nationals in the 1500 meter freestyle. But becoming a nationally-ranked swimmer was not always Chase’s goal. “I wanted to learn to surf and my parents said that if I wanted to surf I had to become a better swimmer. I’ve stuck with it ever since,” Chase shared. Name: Age: School: Grade: Parents: Siblings:
Lindsay Ladman 15 San Marcos High School 10th Phil and Karen Ladman Chase (17), Adam (10)
Little sister Lindsay loved the water from the start. “Ever since I was a baby in the bathtub, I have loved the water,” Lindsay said. In second grade she joined North Coast Aquatics. Today, Lindsay also swims for San Marcos High School (SMHS) where she holds the school's records in the 200 and 500 meter freestyle, and she was named Rookie of the Year. As a sophomore, Lindsay is looking ahead. “This year my goal is to achieve Junior National qualifying times in order to be able to travel to National Meets with my team,” Lindsay stated. But the siblings’ strengths do not lie solely in their freestyle strokes. School is also a top priority. Chase “WITHOUT belongs to the National Honors Society and is ranked HIM, I in the top 3% of his class. He also recently committed to Georgetown University. Lindsay, a strong student WOULD NOT herself, sees Chase as an important inspiration. BE WHO I AM “Without him, I would not be who I am today. I aspire TODAY...” to be as successful of a student and swimmer as he has become,” Lindsay acknowledged. - LINDSAY Outside of school and the pool, Chase and Lindsay enjoy surfing, wakeboarding and golfing with the rest of their family, including parents, Phil and Karen, and younger brother, Adam, 10. Their favorite spots around 92009 include the beach, the Carlsbad Lagoon and the golf course. Looking to life beyond their home in La Costa Greens, Lindsay would love to travel. Chase, on the cusp of graduating, plans to major in business, have a successful career, and live on the beach. These siblings certainly have their sights set farther than the far end of the pool. ¢

YOUR NEIGHBOR’S RECIPE
Nana Keek’s
Pumpkin SCONES Ingredients 1-1/4 cups unbleached flour 1 cup white whole wheat flour (or whole wheat pastry flour) 1/2 cup oat flour 1/3 cup organic sugar 1 tablespoon baking powder 3/4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (freshly ground) 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice 1/2 cup cold butter 2 cups toasted, chopped pecans or cinnamon chips 7.5 oz. (1/2 can) canned pumpkin puree 1/4 cup buttermilk 2 large eggs coarse sugar, for topping
1. 2.
3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
8. 9.
Directions
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flours, 1/3 cup sugar, baking powder, salt and spices. Put flour in food processor bowl and add cut-up chunks of the cold butter. Process with on/off spurts until butter is small chunks — do not over process as the “pockets” of butter help create a lighter, fluffier baked scone. In a separate bowl whisk together the pumpkin, buttermilk and eggs until smooth. Add to dry ingredients and the butter-in-process and with on/ off spurts, lightly mix just until liquid is incorporated — a little extra flour is fine and can be mixed gently in by hand. Put processor contents into a large mixing bowl, add pecans or cinnamon chips and gently mix in by hand until just incorporated. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Scrape dough onto the parchment and divide in half. Round each half into a 6” circle about ¾” thick. Brush each circle with milk, and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired. Slice each circle into 6 wedges. Gently separate and pull the wedges away from the center so there is at least ½” between them at their outer edges. Place the pan of scones in the freezer for approx. 30 minutes prior to baking. While the scones are chilling, preheat the oven to 425°F. Bake the scones for 22 to 25 minutes or until they are golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
10. If desired, frost with a simple butter cream frosting (butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, milk) while still warm and just out of the oven. Yum!
*Karen prefers to use all organic ingredients in her baking — or at least wherever possible. Makes: 12 Total Time: 1 hr. 15 mins.

Carlsbad PD Teddy Bear Drive
The Carlsbad Police Department and other regional law enforcement are calling out to all stuffed teddy bears, new with the tags on. On Dec. 10, these stuffed friends will be escorted by about eighty police cars, and make their way to Rady Children’s Hospital. The annual San Diego Regional Law Enforcement Teddy Bear Drive originated in December 1990 when Coronado Police Officer Brian Hardy gathered a dozen teddy bears and organized for a police car to drop them off at the hospital. The program grew each year as fellow officers wanted to participate. Now there have been over 100,000 stuffed toys collected, delivered by a caravan of police cars, with lights flashing, to the kids at the hospital. This year the goal is 1,200 toys. If you would like to donate, the stuffed bears must be new, and with the tags still attached. Deliver the bear to the police department located at 2560 Orion Way during regular business hours or to any participating agency before Dec. 10.

The council also presented to Laurin Pause the “Spirit of Carol Sigelman Award”, given annually to an outstanding development professional in honor of Carol Sigelman, a North County professional who passed away in 2005. The inaugural Robert Krejci Standards of Excellence Award was presented to attorney Colleen O’Harra who has a long history of civic and community engagement in North County. Supervisor Dave Roberts Tours Pacifica House Hospice
San Diego County District 3 Supervisor Dave Roberts recently enjoyed a handson tour of Hospice of the North Coast’s (HNC) new Pacifica House, an in-patient hospice residence serving all of North County. It is the first such freestanding facility in the North Coastal region. Supervisor Roberts was accompanied by Mary Jane Boyd, a longtime Solana Beach friend and campaign co-manager. Boyd served as HNC’s Volunteer Director from 1985 to 1998. Hospice of the North Coast was established to fill the need for hospice care in North County. It provides programs to terminally ill clients and their families, including anticipatory and post-death bereavement support, as well as a Pathways Program for those with a declining chronic disease. HNC hosts fundraising events, operates a family support camp and resale shop, and maintains a cadre of volunteers. Pictured here are HNC Development Don Beaumarchais, longtime HNC volunteer Mary Jane Boyd, HNC Executive Director Nerice Kaufman; Supervisor Dave Roberts and HNC Board Chair Bobbie Hoder at Pacifica House.

Knit For The Cure Supports Susan G. Komen
Founded in 2004, the Knit for the Cure Campaign recruits knitters & crocheters to create handmade items to be sold at various Komen events, one of which included the Race for the Cure which was held on Nov. 3 in Balboa Park. Although most items are created by San Diego County residents, the campaign had knitters and crocheters from all over including Connecticut, Virginia, and New York. This year, some San Diego knitters also formed a team and participated in the race. Knit for the Cure raised over $5,300 this year. Seventy-five percent of the funds raised remain right here in San Diego to cover every step of the breast health journey – from education, outreach, mammograms, and diagnostics, to surgeries, chemotherapy, and more. The remaining 25% of each dollar raised funds national research to discover the causes and cures for breast cancer. For information on how to become involved in next year’s campaign contact barbara.susangkomen@gmail.com.

Love In Every Stitch
Edrie Aus, a resident of Carlsbad By The Sea retirement community, has put her knitting skills to a humanitarian use. The 101-year-old decided to knit an afghan blanket and donate it to a baby born at nearby Tri-City Medical Center with a card wishing health and happiness. Although such a sweet gesture would touch any parent’s heart, it was particularly meaningful for Molly Hudson, the mother who was selected to receive the blanket for her son, Jordan. Born on Oct. 25, Jordan was immediately rushed to the NICU for trouble breathing and was diagnosed with a lung infection. Fortunately, Jordan is now at home safe and sound and has made a full recovery at the NICU under Tri-City’s care. Molly, her husband, Travis, and Jordan all met Edrie for the first time to exchange the blanket at Edrie’s home in mid-November.

HALSTROM ACADEMY A Unique One-on-One Education Alternative by SARABETH McELHANEY | photos by Tyler McElhaney

s all parents know, every child has unique traits and areas they excel in. In education, many times the “one-sizefits-all” approach isn’t optimal for a student’s success. Halstrom Academy offers a nurturing environment, onestudent to one-teacher classes and flexible scheduling options optimized for both parents and students. Founded in 1985 as a more personalized approach to learning, Halstrom Academy emphasizes the use of technology, personalized learning techniques and a more dynamic environment for learning. Julie and Rick Devoe are parents of three Halstrom students: Fischer, Jaysea and Ryder. “The kids feel more empowered and they can enjoy a whole other world outside of school,” explained Julie. "The kids stay on campus after class to complete their homework where help is available which allows them to focus on their internships and extra curricular activities after school." With the flexible schedule Halstrom provides, all three of Julie and Rick’s children are able to spend time working local internships. Fischer helps out at Captain Fin in Oceanside and Surfy Surfy in Leucadia, Jaysea volunteers by teaching yoga to children at the Oasis Community Preschool in Encinitas, and Ryder works at Solana Beach’s Blue Water Tackle in his spare time. Because Halstrom Academy is staffed with teachers who are experts in their field of study, students can make more meaningful connections and mastery of the subjects. "The greatest benefit is that our children are learning to take direction and getting an edge on their careers,” commented Rick Devoe. “It really is the future of education.” “Parents may need flexible scheduling options because their child is an actor/athlete or are searching for more of an individualized learning experience because of the increasing class sizes of more than 35:1 in a traditional school setting,” explained Carrie Mulcahy, Director of Marketing for Halstrom Academy. ¢
Parents interested in Halstrom’s alternative approach to learning are encouraged to visit the Academy’s website at www.halstromacademy.org or call (760) 487-7556.

t’s no secret that youth sports help to strengthen young bodies and develop young minds. Learning about the value of teamwork, hard work and sacrifice is one of the most rewarding aspects of growing up, and here in Carlsbad, we have the benefit of the city-run youth basketball league to help give our young athletes the best possible competitive experience. We talked with
Steve Herrera, Recreation Supervisor for the City of Carlsbad, about the benefits of the program and the wide range of options available to both young boys and girls.

WHAT OVERALL EXPERIENCE CAN THE BASKETBALL PLAYERS EXPECT WHILE PLAYING FOR THIS LEAGUE? TBy the end of the season, the youth of Carlsbad will have challenges and learn how to overcome them by performing as a team, and how good sportsmanship leads to becoming a better member of society off the court. We want the kids to learn and understand the game of basketball, and to lead with what they learned in their day-to-day lives. Basketball can teach more than the game, including how to handle tight situations, playing with others, learning others, how to think in a fast-paced game.
HOW ARE THE TEAMS FORMED TO ENSURE THEY ARE BALANCED APPROPRIATELY? Although not a perfect science, it’s the number one goal of the department to try best balance out the teams. The first process is we do a player assessment of each child (height and picture is taken so we can look at heights), speak with parents of their child’s basketball and other sport abilities. Secondly, we have each coach at the end of the season to gives us a report card of each child. The report should list their strengths and what the child needs to work on, and what improvement

Keep It Up, Kie Ho
L
ast year, Kie Ho, a 73-year-old Carlsbad-based runner, suffered a stroke while running on Carlsbad Blvd. Since the stroke, he’s had five stents inserted to increase the efficiency of blood passage. After stroke and surgery, most people would hang up their running shoes, but not Kie. He claims that exercising for long periods of time alleviates
his pain. Kie is just one of the Lucky 13. Lucky 13 participants are among the most inspiring runners looking to conquer the Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon and Half Marathon on Jan. 19. These competitors have overcome adversities from congenital heart defect to painful fibromyalgia and diabetes, and now have their eyes set on a new goal: to compete in their first-ever half marathon. Their race to the finish line has already started with a free six-month training program through the Tri-City Wellness Center. The Lucky 13 trainer Siene Freeman said Kie is very inspirational. “He’s the oldest competitor this year and has just shined the entire time,” said Siene. He runs farther than half marathons without a problem and is very dedicated to his training. Even when they’re not working out together, the Lucky 13 communicate through Facebook, blog, and email with words of encouragement for one another, and Siene says Kie is always ready with great quotes and thoughts for the group. “My job as a coach is easy with such an amazing group,” she said. ¢

WORKOUT
Experience Fortis Fitness AND Strength Training & YOGALUX by LINDA FRABL
W
ith 2014 fast approaching, it is time to act on our New Year’s resolution to get ourselves fit. But why should we bother, when it is usually so difficult for us to stick with an exercise regime? Don’t worry. Fortis Fitness Strength Training & YOGALUX in 92009 will keep you on track, because their philosophy, according to General Manager Adam Jacobs, “Keeping it fresh is the key to staying on the fitness course. Fortis’ notion is that combining different specialties provides a much more invigorating, effective and fun way to get fit. By varying the types of classes and trainings for our members, we now see them having more energy, being happier and looking in better shape than ever.” Are you curious about boxing? Or perhaps an invigorating barre class is more your speed? Maybe you’d like to see what the buzz is all about for hot yoga? Fortis offers all of these options and then some; basically Fortis combines five studios all under one roof at a price point which is no more than one would typically pay at any small single purpose studio. With Fortis and YOGALUX, there’s no more
need to have three different club memberships, since a Fortis membership already includes yoga, barre, indoor cycling, sculpt, group exercise, boot camps, TRX, personal training, sport performance training and more. “Fortis is where members can enjoy a broad range of total workout services and experience, all in one place.” Of particular note, YOGALUX provides members with two state-of-the-art hot yoga studios, which when combined for the semi-monthly live music events comprise nearly 3,000 square feet, which makes it the largest hot yoga studio in all of San Diego. Experienced yogis teach the connection between the physical and the mental through breathing techniques and various asanas (postures). “Fortis in Latin actually means strength – both physical and mental – and Fortis seeks to combine both aspects of health and well-being. Fortis’ goal is to challenge the body in as many different ways as we can,” said Adam. In addition to extensive class selections, Fortis instructors and trainers are all professionally accredited and experienced.

“
I’m glad there is more than just yoga. I like lifting weights and having functional muscle strength while still being flexible, and I can get all of this at Fortis.” – Dennis P.
The Fortis personal training studio is a real show stopper too, with top-of-the-line exercise equipment seldom seen in any other gym. On-site KidFit childcare is available, and there is a very nice member lounge that gets used regularly with family movie nights, cooking demonstrations, private parties, and more. If you are looking for a place to call home for your New Year’s resolution, try Fortis and YOGALUX – it’s a cut above. Maybe it’s the Fortis standard where in Adam’s view, “We use member satisfaction as our business compass. Working with each individual member to achieve whatever personal goals they may have established for themselves is very rewarding.” ¢ SPECIAL ADVERTISEMENT

LOOK WHO IS WEARING BRACES!!
Potential Orthodontic Patients People are faced with several issues. They want straight teeth and great smiles but they don't want braces to show and they don't want braces for a long time. The clear “retainer-type” orthodontics has solved the problem of having traditional braces on teeth but it requires a lengthy amount of time and is expensive.
The day Tarynn had her braces placed, to eliminate minor crowding
Lingual Braces Introducing a small lingual bracket that attaches to the inside of the teeth and is invisible. This invisible bracket is capable of correcting minor crowding and rotation problems in a very short period of time (eight weeks to six months). Over 60% of my practice is composed of adults ranging in age from 18 to 83. Why have they chosen to have their teeth straightened as adults? The most common reasons are: • Always wanted straight teeth, but parents couldn’t afford braces. • Do not like their smile. • Their teeth are crooked. • Their teeth are wearing. • Had braces in the past, but didn’t continue to wear retainers, and their front teeth became crowded again. • Gum problems due to crowding. • T.M.J. (Jaw Joint) problems causing headaches, neckaches, etc.

or some, the scariest moments reveal the greatest opportunities. For Keri Jucha of La Costa, emergency brain surgery was the catalyst to give back in ways she would have never foreseen. Seven years ago, Keri was rushed to Rady Children's Hospital for a sinus infection that had spread to her brain. The emergency surgery was successful, and Keri spent nine days recovering in the hospital. The playroom and visits from face painters, story tellers, and baseball players were great distractions during her recovery. But it was the small act of making jewelry to pass the time that proved to have the biggest impact. After learning the hospital did not have movies for its young patients – save for the old VHS tapes – Keri decided to auction her jewelry and bring the movies to the hospital. Today, at the age of 17, Keri has donated DVD players, iPads, and laptops for the children at Rady Children’s Hospital and has raised over $20,000 for the cause. As the largest pediatric care facility in California, Rady Children’s Hospital works to create a healing environment focused on its young patients. Keri even considers her stay at Rady Children’s Hospital

“fun” and this has helped drive her work for the organization and, more importantly, the patients. “My wish would be for every child to have as much fun in the hospital as I did. All of those activities are a great distraction to being a very scary place,” Keri acknowledged. Outside of her philanthropic work, Keri, a senior at San Dieguito Academy (SDA), plays soccer for the Carlsbad Lightning GU18 team and the varsity team at SDA. She loves the outdoors, especially hiking and surfing. Her creative side is still strong, as well. Keri enjoys her AP Art class at school and continues to make jewelry. Throughout her busy schedule as a high school senior, Keri remains committed to her service at Rady Children’s Hospital. Just this past November, Keri was awarded the Outstanding Youth/Student Volunteer Award at San Diego’s 41st annual National Philanthropy Day. She was both honored and surprised to learn of her nomination. For Keri, it’s been an experience that fills her far beyond the award. “Realizing that what I was doing was changing the lives of the kids in the hospital is an amazing feeling,” Keri explained. ¢

Love on a Leash
The Foundation for Pet Provided Therapy by ROBIN KAUFMAN | President, San Diego Love On A Leash
W
hat do libraries, schools, hospitals, veterans facilities, domestic violence centers, and court rooms all have in common? They, along with a number of other places, all receive pet therapy visits from Love On A Leash (LOAL), the Foundation for Pet Provided Therapy organization. Love On A Leash is a national, non-profit, all volunteer organization established in 1984. The goal is simple – to bring smiles and comfort to those who are visited by a pet therapy animal. Pet therapy animals are privately owned and can be a dog, cat, or rabbit. The dogs can be pure breeds, mixed breeds, and come in all sizes. LOAL does not raise and train dogs to be service or companion animals. To become a fully certified LOAL pet therapy team, dogs must have basic obedience skills and a good temperament. After graduating from a six-week pet therapy training class and passing a control evaluation test (as well as passing the Canine Good Citizen test), the dogs and their humans must then complete a minimum of 10 supervised visits. For cats and rabbits, a veterinarian must certify their health and temperament. After initial certification, those pets must also complete a minimum of 10 supervised visits. There are three LOAL chapters in San Diego County – San Diego Love On A Leash (sandiegoLOAL@aol.com), which covers the north county inland areas; San Diego North County Chapter (mgleisberg@cox.net), which covers the north county coastal areas; and the San Diego Central Chapter (sandiegocentralloal@gmail.com), which covers everything in-between. To learn more about Love On A Leash, visit www.loveonaleash.org or San Diego Love On A Leash’s website at www.sandiegoLOAL.com.

:::: HOME TIPS
BIG CHANGES little things,
Tips to Freshen Up Your Home by JESSICA WOODS
H
ow many times have you made the promise to yourself to make some changes in your home? Let’s clean it up, repaint the walls, build a gazebo, or buy a new dining set! Well, let’s hold the horses for a second. This coming new year doesn’t mean you need to make big purchases or strip your house to the bare bones to make way for some new feng shui. Sometimes it’s the tiniest change in details that make all the difference.
A Coat of Paint
Duct Tape Decorating
In my neighbor’s foyer was once a wooden standing cabinet. It was well-used and getting on in years, but she noticed that it was a bit of an eyesore. Instead of buying a whole new cabinet, she repainted it. Not just plain black or white though, but a beautiful shade of teal that was pleasing to the eye. Before you decide to replace the cabinets or an old armoire, consider a trip to the hardware store and have some fun finding a color that would complement the room. For an additional look, you can change the handles or knobs along with that new coat of paint.
Fuzzy Frames Winter’s coming, so here’s a way to make your pictures and living room look a little cozier. Grab some plain wooden frames, old or new, and a few balls of colored yarn. Detach the backing of the frame, leaving just the square. Take a string of yarn and start wrapping it around the frame until every space is covered, and glue the ends down. When re-attaching the back, it’ll be quite snug, but can be resized to fit.

I know you’re probably thinking “Duct tape? Really?”, but duct tape has become remarkably versatile lately. Not only is it the most durable, long-lasting tape around, but if you enter any craft store, there’s a whole plethora of different colors and patterns to choose from. Take a blank lamp shade or a vase and apply a layer of duct tape. With a pair of some sharp scissors, it’s easy to make abstract patterns, mix color blocks, and make a design all your own. Decorate the lamp shade with some colorful waves, or add some duct tape flowers to the base of the vase, to make them look pleasing. This is especially fun for kids of all ages.
Giving Pets a Second Chance
L
ast Chance At Life Rescue (LCAL) is an animal rescue and adoption program based in Oceanside, specializing in canine and bird adoptions. They take in animals from all over San Diego, including those facing euthanasia because of medical or behavorial issues. For these forgotten pets, this place is their “Last Chance At Life.” LCAL started as the Boxers N Birds rescue back in 1986 when Lisa Hamilton was rescuing dogs and taking them into her home. She joined Mission Animal Hospital in 1988 with Dr. Robert Cartin and began taking in more medical needs animals. When Mission Animal & Bird Hospital moved to Oceanside, Dr. Cartin let the rescue use the old facility as their adoption center. The name of the rescue was then changed to Last Chance at Life. LCAL rescues animals from other counties as well, such as Cassidy, a Doberman Pinscher from Riverside County. Cassidy’s broken leg was going to be amputated, but was exited to LCAL’s care to see if his leg could be saved. Although Cassidy’s LCAL vets agreed that it had to be amputated, Cassidy has been doing well, adapting quickly with a missing leg. LCAL is currently searching for a home for Cassidy. Through the efforts of the LCAL Thrift Store and fundraising, they will continue to grow. Last year saw over 200 pets adopted and they want to make an even bigger dent this year. Visit their website, www.lastchanceatlife.org, for more information on adoptions and rescues. ¢
