Call Me “Breaux”

D IRE C TO R O F B U SINE S S DE V E LO PME NT

A

little over a year ago, I wrote about how our kids were taking music lessons and having fun learning to play and sing various popular songs. They are now into music more than ever before, and a lot has happened in a year. In case you are hearing about this for the first time, Peyton plays guitar and sings. Audrey plays drums and piano, but she insists that drums are her number one. The two of them have come a long way over the last year. For starters, they formed a band and decided to officially name their two-person “brother and sister” duo Call Me Breaux. When we discussed their name choice, both Audrey and Peyton explained that people have called them by their last name (pronounced “bro”) their entire life – especially in sports – so it just makes sense for a band name. When my wife and I realized how much they liked singing and performing, we started to gradually convert our dining room into a small music studio. On any given day, you can often hear some type of music being performed by one or both of them. And every once in a while, something magical happens when they come together and play their growing set of songs. It’s fun to be preparing dinner and hear your kids jamming out in the other room. Who needs a radio when you can get live performances inside your house daily? And although they love to play music for the pure sense of accomplishment, now they’ve experienced the thrill of performing live on stage. Last month, they were invited to play a set at the world-famous Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood. A couple of weeks later, they played the House of Blues in San Diego. This was particularly special for them because quite a few of their friends were at the show. They made it clear to me that having their friends in the audience was the coolest thing ever! It’s a pretty crazy thing to stand in the audience and watch your kids (ages 14 and 12) get up on stage in front of a crowd. As a parent, I experience a wide range of emotions. I’m nervous for them. I’m proud of them. And I’m amazed at their determination and willingness to put themselves out there. So far, they’ve only played cover songs. But recently, they have decided that writing and producing their own original songs is where they want to go. They said that it would be awesome to hear their songs playing on the radio one day, so now they are more determined than ever to make this happen. A special thank you to The Fine Tune Academy for continuing to teach music theory to our kids, to Studio West for providing a great local professional recording atmosphere, and to family and friends (you know who you are) that offer amazing support for their music journey.

If there’s one thing that North County residents enjoy more than the beach, it’s the various cuisine, beverages, and sweet treats throughout San Diego. Here, we offer a taste of some local flavor.

With its Mexican wrestling-inspired decor and uniquely delicious fare, Lucha Libre Gourmet Taco Shop has been a Mission Hills staple since it opened in 2008. Now, North County residents can try the Knockout Fries without the drive – a new location opened in The Shoppes at Carlsbad earlier this year.

Carlsbad’s Vivace and Argyle Steakhouse were recently announced as 2018 AAA Four Diamond restaurants. Every year, AAA announces its list of high-quality, distinctive restaurants,

and this year, Vivace’s Northern Italian influences and organic ingredients made an impression. Argyle Steakhouse was recognized for its sophisticated service and standout entrées.

FITMONKEYS

CLIENT PROFILE: Caroline Sinai

Surveys have shown "Carlsbadians" to be some of America's fittest and happiest residents. Caroline is one of these active, happy, "Carlsbadians". She has always been a fitness enthusiast, loving her outdoor runs and taking yoga classes at a local yoga studio run by her good friend. One day while conducting a business meeting at a nearby real estate company, Caroline stumbled across Fit Monkeys. Caroline liked that Fit Monkeys specialized in one-on-one personal training. Additionally, she thought Fit Monkeys use of multiple methodologies to help their clients reach their fitness goals was a fun and interesting idea. She also loved that Fit Monkeys is a family owned business run by mother daughter team Denise McClelland and Kelly McConnell. Caroline decided Fit Monkeys was exactly the studio to meet her personal training needs.

Occupation: Senior Loan Officer American Home Lenders Inc. Hobbies: Traveling, spending time with her three daughters & running along the beach with her husband Michael and their German Shepherd, Koda. Upon initial meeting, Denise McClelland (the mom in Fit Monkeys mother daughter team) put Caroline through a complimentary fitness assessment to address Caroline's strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, Denise gathered information about Caroline's fitness goals and interests. During each of Caroline's sessions Denise uses a combination of pilates, weight training, mat work, and cardio to help Caroline stay a fit and happy "Carlsbadian".

Denise is attentive, the work-outs are challenging and I always feel great when I leave. Denise also discusses exercises and stretches I need to work on at home.”

CLIMBING TO THE TOP

Zoe

AKES | by JENNIFER FR

Z

oe Yi is a fifth grader with high aspirations. She is an avid rock climber who recently scored 10th in the nation at the 2018 USA Climbing Bouldering Youth National Championship. This competition is divided into age groups, and Zoe competed in the 10 and under division. According to Zoe, at Nationals, there are three to five climbs for each contestant, and four minutes is put on the clock for each climb. The score is based on how high the climber reaches and how many falls, if any, the climber experiences. Zoe is proud to have been to Nationals twice and is extremely dedicated to her sport, practicing three times or more per week for two hours each practice. “My life as a climber started when I attended a rock climbing summer camp at The Wall Climbing Gym when I was eight years old. I absolutely adore the sport! I joined the team and started competing a couple months later,” revealed Zoe. When Zoe first joined The Wall Climbing Gym, there was only one other member on the competitive team. In just two-and-a-half years,

the team has grown quite a bit. “Now there are two teams, one is recreational and one is competitive. Between the two teams, there are 30 kids altogether,” stated Zoe. She is not only thrilled with the growth of local rock climbing, but also with how much attention the sport has received throughout the world. “Rock climbing is going to be a sport in the 2020 Olympic Games,” related Zoe proudly. She is quick to cite Ashima Shiraishi, the world’s best female rock climber, as her inspiration in the sport. In addition to rock climbing, Zoe loves being creative. She enjoys making animated videos, creating comics, and developing games on Scratch, a coding app. “I also love LEGO, Rubik’s cubes, and drawing mazes that include unexpected twists,” said Zoe, who attends The Rhodes School. While in school, she especially enjoys her P.E. and technology classes. It isn’t surprising that Zoe’s future goals include becoming a professional rock climber and competing in the Olympics someday. “I’d also like to be an American Ninja Warrior and a LEGO designer. It is important to me that I give back, so I also want to participate in more volunteer work so that I can make a real impact in the community,” said Zoe. ¢

Annual Tip Top Run

AGUA HEDIONDA LAGOON FOUNDATION RUNS FOR AWARENESS photo by Lin Ball

T

he Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation (AHLF) recently held its Annual Tip Top Run, themed Leprechaun Dash and Bash for the Saint Patrick’s Day holiday. The walk and fun run had a 5K course and a 10K course, both ending at the AHLF’s Discovery Center in Carlsbad. The Tip Top Run was meant to celebrate the eradication of Caulerpa taxifolia, a species of seaweed, as well as raise awareness about the lagoon as one of the area’s most amazing natural resources. The event, presented by Poseidon Water, attracted more than 400 participants and 65 volunteers who braved the rainy weather to enjoy the 5k and 10k walk and run. After the run, attendees celebrated with family-fun activities, lunch from Tip Top Meats, live music, World Water Day exhibitors/vendors, and drinks for everyone. Bob Yehling won the 5K walk/run and Michelle Ven Huizen won the 10K walk/run. Approximately $30,000 was raised at the event, which will help the AHLF’s educational programs reach 10,000 elementary school children in 2018. The AHLF has been dedicated to preserving and protecting valuable natural resources. For more information about the lagoon and to see upcoming events, visit www.aguahedionda.org. ¢

NAME: Philip Hwang COMMUNITY: Carlsbad VOLUNTEER AFFILIATION: Carlsbad Educational Foundation Science Olympiad coach PROFESSION: Software Engineer at ViaSat HOBBIES & INTERESTS: Video games, computer science, hiking, baking NAME OF GROUP: Carlsbad Educational Foundation GROUP’S PURPOSE: Investing in our children’s future success through education for all students in the Carlsbad Unified School District by developing and funding impactful programs. hilip Hwang’s career with Carlsbad-based ViaSat is paying off in more ways than one. Not only did his work help him relocate to 92009, it has also connected him with his volunteer role at Carlsbad Educational Foundation. In his profession, Philip is a software engineer for ViaSat, and as a volunteer through the company, he is a coach for Science Olympiad, helping students compete in science tournaments. Philip relocated to Carlsbad from the East Coast six years ago. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in computer science and began his career with ViaSat there. Now happily settled in Carlsbad, he admitted, “I enjoy the slower pace of life outside big cities and the SoCal vibes are pretty chill.” Philip first began volunteering with the Carlsbad Educational Foundation coaching and teaching middle school students how to build rockets and helicopters. “I think the best feeling is seeing students come back year after year with a strong interest in STEM fields,” Philip acknowledged. “Just knowing you helped teach them and spark some interest is a wonderful feeling.” Philip’s own interest in STEM was fueled by his family. His dad is a retired engineer, and his mom is a retired nurse. “Both have pushed the sciences and technology fields, sparking a lot of interest as a kid,” he explained. His childhood in Virginia, surrounded by woods and rivers, also nurtured Philip’s love for nature. He has found plenty of new areas to explore near 92009. “From the hiking perspective, I’m currently exploring the Coast to Crest Trail as sections of that 70-mile trail are built,” he said. “There are also numerous sections of the Pacific Coast Trail here in San Diego that are quite fun!” Philip has found the perfect blend of technology and nature in North County. While he loves to relax at local cafes with his phone and work on his photo editing, he balances that with time on the trail. “I love video games and VR and technology and space,” he shared. “And on the other side, I enjoy hiking into the mountains and wilderness and getting away from all that technology.” ¢

COMMUNITY STUFF

Pacific Ridge Students Give Back

Carlsbad Artists to Perform at Festival

The Pacific Ridge School Boys’ varsity basketball team, consisting of students from Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Rancho Santa Fe, took part in their annual holiday meal delivery to La Posada de Guadalupe, a shelter for homeless men and farm workers, in January. The team arrived to the shelter for the fourth time with trays full of food, and got to talk with the men there to learn more about their backgrounds. “The boys jumped right into it,” said basketball coach Chris Burman. “It’s a way for them to see that they can have a positive impact locally, right here within our community.” The team also traveled to Tijuana last year to host a basketball clinic in an underserved community there, where they taught basic basketball skills to over 30 children and played friendly scrimmages against local basketball clubs. Community service is built into the curriculum at Pacific Ridge, giving students the opportunity to work on causes they are passionate about. Learn more at www.pacificridge.org.

Carlsbad Art Hop Carlsbad Village recently hosted its Art Hop, a spin-off of the longrunning Carlsbad Art Walk. The evening was a celebration dedicated to the arts with live music, refreshments, and interactive activities. More than 100 artists displayed their work throughout a variety of different pop-up art galleries in the courtyard. With three locations as part of the Art Hop (The Foundry Artist Studios, Viz Art Ink Gallery, and the Carlsbad Village Faire) each featuring different artists, attendees were able to hop from one location to another and enjoy what each artist and location had to offer. The Foundry was home to the egg crafting project led by Village artist Bryan Snyder, where participants could paint and design their eggs in time for Easter. From sculptures and jewelry to paintings and multi-media pieces, the Carlsbad Village Art Hop had a something for everyone. The next Art Hop will be on June 28. Pacific Ridge Robotics Team Goes Undefeated The Pacific Ridge School robotics team, 4262 Ridgebots, went undefeated for the second time in a row earlier this year in a FIRST Lego League match at Mater Dei Catholic High School. Every year, teams engage in a new challenge where they design, build, test, and program autonomous and driver-operated robots that must perform a series of tasks. This season, students participated in the Relic Recovery Challenge. Robots were required to pick up foam blocks and place them in a pattern, among other tasks. The team later won the Rockwell Collins Innovate Award for creating a robot that demonstrated a unique engineering solution to the game challenge, and were finalists at a regional tournament in Carmel Valley. 4262 Ridgebots is currently the highest-ranked team in their division in FIRST Tech Challenge. SPRINGTIME

RIDING

Explore Scenic Bike Routes All Around San Diego by DANIELA ALVAREZ

S

pringtime in San Diego is a warm, colorful haven. With near perfect weather, shady trees, and the dazzling Pacific Ocean to the west, San Diego is the ultimate place to find the most scenic bike routes and explore the beauty of the whole county. From north to south, San Diego boasts hundreds of miles of scenic bike riding. Check out these bike paths throughout sunny San Diego!

Before riding, remember to: • Bring a water bottle • Have a padlock to secure your bike • Check the air pressure on your tires • Wear a helmet

AROUND TOWN: ADAMS AVENUE

BALBOA PARK BIKE TRAILS

BAYSHORE BIKING

Kensington to University Heights For less intense bicyclists who want to ride through a trendy location, Adams Ave. is the perfect path. With dozens of coffee shops, restaurants, and breweries, this path offers plenty of inviting pit stops and minimal traffic for an easy trip.

Balboa Park Balboa Park offers five gateways, each with several trails perfect for biking or walking. The Balboa Park paths are ideal for admiring the park’s beauty or for stopping at one of the park’s many museums.

Coronado This 24-mile path is almost a full loop, beginning in Coronado and ending in Seaport Village. While you can’t bike on the Coronado Bridge, you can take the ferry to complete the entire path. This path offers ocean views and a relatively flat, easy ride for anyone.

HIGHWAY 56 BIKE PATH

SAN LUIS REY RIVER TRAIL

Torrey Pines to Rancho Peñasquitos This 10-mile bike path begins at Torrey Pines State Reserve and ends in Rancho Peñasquitos. This is the perfect path for intermediate to advanced cyclists looking to break a sweat and enjoy the views along the way.

Oceanside to Guajome Regional Park This paved, seven-mile path allows for an easy ride for all types of bicyclists and pedestrians. The open space and beautiful views make it a great route to take on a weekend afternoon. ¢

CLOSER TO HOME: LAKE HODGES SUSPENSION BRIDGE Escondido This stressed, ribbon-style bridge is nearly 1,000 feet long and overlooks Lake Hodges in Escondido. The bridge welcomes bicyclists and pedestrians and offers beautiful scenery. Perfect for kids and beginners. 38 • 92009MAGAZINE.COM • April | May 2018

If the Price Is Right… by JESSICA BREAUX

Y

ou are thinking about selling your house – but only if you can get the right price! So, you find an agent that will agree to list your home for more than it’s worth. I hear this all the time, and it can be a recipe for disaster. Selling your home can be an emotional experience. And every seller wants to get the most that they can. The reason why you should not overprice your home is simple: it won’t sell. Pricing your home correctly from the beginning is critical. Buyers are more savvy than ever before. With today’s technology, it is easier than ever to spot a home that is overpriced. Many negative things can happen when an overpriced listing hits the market, including but not limited to missed buyer opportunities.

There are many aspects to selling a home for top dollar. The answer to achieving this usually comes down to three controllable variables: price, property condition, and marketing. The goal is to create a high demand for your home, and pricing it correctly can be one of the biggest influencers. Just like any other product, if careful attention is given to these variables, you will ultimately be pleased with the outcome. If you are considering making a move, you should be able to do so with confidence. Give me a call to schedule a meeting. It’s important to work with someone that you trust, and I would love the opportunity to get to know you and discuss your real estate goals. ¢
