Mother’s Day
A
lthough Mother’s Day was last month, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to write about it this issue. I have been blessed with great mothers surrounding me throughout my life. As we celebrate Mother’s Day each year, I often reflect on my childhood, teenage years, and young adulthood. I was raised by a very strong and supportive mother, and as a first grandchild, I also spent many of my younger years with my grandmother. Unfortunately, these two wonderful women are no longer with us today, but the memories and life lessons that I received from them are forever held close to my heart. Having lost my mother to a tragic automobile accident back in 2010 and my grandmother to cancer more recently, you would think that Mother’s Day would approach with some apprehension. However, much to my pleasant surprise, I’ve discovered that Mother’s Day has become one of the most meaningful holidays of the year. Even though the day typically starts with a little sadness – more like a period of reflection – it quickly turns into a very deep and significant day. Not only do I have an opportunity to celebrate the great memories surrounding my mother and grandmother, I also have the privilege of having several more fantastic mothers that surround me, support me, and make our lives more meaningful. While there are too many wonderful mothers in our friends and family sphere to mention in this letter, I would like to take a moment to recognize a few of them. First on the list, I would like to thank my wonderful wife, Jessica, for being such an awesome mother to our three kids (as well as many of the neighborhood kids). There are quite a few kiddos around the community (some adults in college now) that have grown up calling you “Momma” Breaux. We are all lucky to have you do what you do. Happy Mother’s Day, Jessica! Derrick Breaux I would also like to take a moment to send a heartfelt Publisher thank you to my mother-in-law Trish and mother-in-law Doreen. Not only are you both incredible influences on our family, but you are also wonderful grandmothers to our kids. We are all extremely happy to have you be a major part of our lives. Happy Mother’s Day, Trish and Doreen! Last but not least, I would like to recognize my sister. Not only are you a great sister, you are also a wonderful mother. I find great joy in watching the way you raise your three children, often displaying the incredibly familiar and nurturing parenting that our mother used with the two of us growing up. It warms my heart beyond words. Happy Mother’s Day, Angelique! And a belated happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers in the world (past and present) that have impacted our lives. I hope your Mother’s Day was filled with lots of hugs, special memories, love, and laughter.

hey say eyes are windows to the soul. Beautiful eyes make us radiate and create something magical inside and out. Among the many new beauty trends available, eyelash extensions create a beautiful, eye-popping, and makeup-free effect. And when we look and feel good, confidence follows. Why have lash extensions become so in vogue? They used to be a beauty luxury reserved for the rich and famous. Today, lash extensions have become an affordable beauty practice for the masses due to advances in products and application technique. Amazing Lash Studio, a franchise that started in 2013, arrived in Carmel Valley in January of 2016 and in La Costa in June 2017. Carmel Valley/La Costa franchisee owner Theresa Shay has been established in her position for three years. Prior to Amazing Lash Studio, Theresa was in the real estate industry for 15 years, with owned brokerage for eight of those 15. Becoming part of the Amazing Lash Studio team was a no-brainer for Theresa — two of her brothers and a sister also own franchises in New Jersey and Connecticut. There are over 175 locations nationwide, with five in the San Diego County Region. At Amazing Lash Studio, it may take anywhere from one to two hours to apply extensions, depending on a full set or refill (maintenance) service. A synthetic lash fiber is applied to a natural lash on a 1-1 basis using medical-grade glue. There are four different lash styles to choose from: Natural, Cute, Sexy, or Gorgeous. And for the more intense, dramatic, fuller look, Amazing Volume lashes are available in Classic (3D) and Glam (6D). Each style provides longer, thicker lashes, however, the guest chooses their preferred length and thickness. All types enhance the eye beautifully and are extremely lightweight. Amazing Lash Studio’s licensed estheticians are trained over 80 hours on a patented lash application technique. Each guest receives a

consultation upon their first visit. The next step is to lie down, listen to music and relax — many even fall asleep — in one of the private suites while lashes are applied. The result? Eyes that pop and look vibrant without mascara, eyeliner, or an eyelash curler! While many people enjoy make-up free, “wake-up and go” eyes, eyelash extensions need to be washed and brushed daily. Like hair, lashes have a growth cycle, so as your natural lashes shed, new lash extensions should be applied every two to three weeks, depending on your natural growth cycle. If you want to look more beautiful, radiant, sexy, young, and reduce your daily make-up routine, try lash extensions... then, get ready for the compliments. fter emerging from previous marriages, Jeremy and April (now both Henley) stepped out of their comfort zones to try dating – online, even. “It was scary for both of us, but Tinder brought us together. After both swiping right and chatting online a bit, we decided to meet at Chandler’s, and it was bliss since that moment.” April is a San Diego State University graduate who founded Dogs On The Run in 2003, a pet care company that’s grown to be the largest in San Diego. Jeremy graduated from Washington State and is currently vice president of sales for ID Experts, a cybersecurity and identity theft protection company. The Henleys now have a blended family of five they call their “own little Brady Bunch,” and they’ve lived in and loved the Balearas neighborhood of La Costa Greens for two and a half years. The entire group has shared interests which include exploring new places – whether blazing trails out in the backyard or traveling to foreign countries – to making family adventures YouTube videos, starting a rock band, and playing all afternoon in the pool. Four of the five kids attend Double Peak School, and come fall, all five will attend for the next two years. Will, 12, is great at math and science and loves to see how things work. “Molly is our nine-year-old who already acts like a teenager,” they kidded. “She loves gymnastics and doing cartwheels all over the house or baking cakes and cookies.” Eight-year-old Luke is also a great student who is known as a leader at school and, “like his older brother, would prefer to play video games with his free time.” The Henleys call their six-year-old “Handsome Jack” and confirm him as their stunt double in training. “Although we’ve avoided the ER, he seems to be the accident-prone child.” Five-year-old Easton prefers sailing on their boat in Point Loma and is genuinely disappointed it doesn’t have a cannon. “Easton is seriously considering a career as a professional pirate,” they smiled. Experience has taught them that life after divorce doesn’t have to be dreadful. “Don’t get us wrong... it can be a total zoo, but we have found that our blended family provides a great way for us to explore different methods of parenting, opportunities to talk about different ways to handle just about anything,” they affirmed. “It teaches the kids to be open-minded, kind, and understanding of other people’s feelings.” ¢

The Mitchell Thorp Foundation and San Diego Aviators World Team Tennis will host the Pillars of Hope Grand Slam on Saturday, July 28. The event includes dinner, tennis play by top-ranked pro players, and auctions to benefit the foundation, as well as a special children’s program. Kids Night check-in is at 3 p.m., and the dinner program begins at 3:30 p.m. The evening will also announce the winners of this year’s Pillar of Hope Award, which recognizes doctors, educators, therapists, and institutions who go above and beyond in the medical community. The Mitchell Thorp Foundation supports families of children with life-threatening illnesses or disorders, with four programs: Medical and Home Assistance, Healing and Rehabilitation, Conversion Mobility Van Program, and Youth Leadership Council. Carlsbad residents were recently invited to attend a grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony for the Pine Avenue Community Center and Gardens. The gardens feature drought-tolerant landscaping, a community gathering plaza, public art featuring a willow dome, picnic areas, and a raised planter bed community garden. For the grand opening, guests participated in various activities such as how to quick pickle garden vegetables, how to grow your own microgreens, a lady bug release, and a meeting with artist Jenna Didier. Paddle Pull & Sweep
The California Distinguished Schools Program has returned after a three-year break, replacing the California Gold Ribbon Schools Program.Aviara Oaks Elementary and Pacific Rim Elementary are the two Carlsbad Unified schools that have been named 2018 California Distinguished Schools. According to the California Department of Education, 287 elementary schools across the state, and 33 elementary schools in San Diego County, are being honored under the Distinguished Schools Program this year. “These schools implement outstanding educational programs and practices that help California students realize their potential, and put them on the path to achieve their dreams,” said Torlakson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, in a news release. For a complete list of honorees and to learn more about the program, visit www.cde.ca.gov.
The Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation recently held its annual Paddle Pull and Sweep, a clean-up event of the lagoon and its surroundings, via kayak, paddle board, or shoreline stroll. The event was sponsored by Thermo Fisher Scientific, Stifel (Carlsbad), and California Watersports and was able to raise $10,000, with all proceeds going towards benefiting the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation’s educational programs. More than 100 people were in attendance for water relays and a beach party that incorporated one of the Foundation’s most popular events, the Rubber Ducky Derby, where participants organized teams and raced rubber ducks in the lagoon. There were plenty of other games and STEM-related educational activities hosted by Thermo Fisher Scientific, as well as food, informational booths, and more. Awards were given for the most interesting pieces of trash found, which included a pair of cargo pants and a basketball hoop base. In 2017, he graduated from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government’s Senior Executives in State and Local Governments Program. He is also a 2013 graduate of LEAD San Diego. He completed his formal education at UC Santa Barbara, with a bachelor of arts degree in law and society. To learn more visit www.carlsbadca.gov.
New Ocean Blue, a service learning program at Pacific Ridge School, recently hosted a cleanup at Carlsbad Beach. The cleanup was part of the group’s mission to promote cleaner oceans and reduce pollution, as well as providing a learning opportunity for the students involved. In addition to service projects, students in New Ocean Blue promote environmental awareness through presentations at elementary schools in Carlsbad, San Marcos, and Vista. They teach other students about minimizing plastic consumption and pollution. New Ocean Blue is one of a number of service learning groups at the school, which also includes programs focused on domestic violence awareness, working with developmentally disabled children, STEM workshops for underserved children, animal advocacy, and more. Box 4475 Carlsbad, CA 92008 Website: www.CarlsbadYouthBaseball.org Email: webadmin@carlsbadyouthbaseball.org Description: Carlsbad Youth Baseball is a nonprofit organization that serves hundreds of players and their families in Carlsbad and surrounding cities to provide a fun learning experience for all children.
Q&A with
Carlsbad Youth Baseball President Jeff Johnson What is the history behind Carlsbad Youth Baseball (CYB)? When was it first established? Carlsbad Youth Baseball is a nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization and was established in 1992. As a league, we have grown and become a significant part of this community. The 2018 Spring season just came to an end and we
had over 700 kids signed up to play baseball. Ages range from 4-14, and the following is a breakdown of our divisions: Shetland (ages 4-6), Pinto (ages 7-8), Mustang (ages 9-10), Bronco (ages 11-12), and Pony (ages 13-14). PONY Baseball and Softball is the name of our parent company, which was established in the summer of 1951 in Washington, PA where the headquarters are currently located. The name of our parent company, PONY, stands for “Protect Our Nation’s Youth.” What is CYB’s mission? CYB is a nonprofit organization that serves hundreds of players and their families in Carlsbad and surrounding cities. Our mission is to provide the opportunity for all children, regardless of skill, experience, and financial
status, to have a positive and fun experience learning the fundamentals of baseball, teamwork, and sportsmanship. How does CYB serve the Carlsbad community? CYB serves the community by providing a safe, fun, and educational environment for kids to learn and play the game of baseball. Youth baseball is not only fun for the kids, but it brings the community together. Anytime there are games being played, you can see multiple generations cheering on the players. From siblings to parents and grandparents, everyone enjoys sitting in the bleachers with a hot dog or nachos from the snack bar. A sense of community is definitely created when everyone pulls together to make it a fun experience for the kids. June | July 2018 • 92009MAGAZINE.COM • 17

What type of programs does CYB offer? Who can join and what is the registration process like? CYB provides many different ways for our players to develop over the season. A typical season consists of a combination of practices and games that build upon themselves to help players develop over time. In addition to that, we provide extra training clinics for coaches and players to help develop their skills. We also truly appreciate the relationships we have developed with our local high school baseball programs. Many players from the Carlsbad and Sage Creek baseball teams played in CYB when they were younger. A lot of these kids volunteer their time to help our league out with various events throughout the year. Where does CYB play? Carlsbad Youth Baseball plays at many different fields in Carlsbad. Our main location is Chase Field in downtown Carlsbad. We also play games at Poinsettia, Pine, Alga Norte, and Calavera Parks. In addition, some of our younger divisions play at the local elementary and middle school fields. What is your role with CYB? What are some of your duties or responsibilities? My current role with CYB is President. Duties and responsibilities include presiding over all meetings of the league membership and all meetings of the board of directors, being
18 • 92009MAGAZINE.COM • June | July 2018
Chief Executive Officer of the league, being a member of all standing and special committees, identifying and presenting candidates for chief umpire and division commissioners to the board of directors for approval, maintaining the ability to assign duties not otherwise assigned within the bylaws, managing volunteers, interact with membership, and working with the Parks and Recreation division of the City of Carlsbad. What are the most challenging and most rewarding aspects of your role? The most challenging part of my role is time management. Being president of CYB is as rewarding as it is time consuming. Balancing my role as president, family life, and my “paying” job as a real estate agent can be challenging at times. That being said, I am lucky to have such a great group of volunteers in this organization that all devote countless hours of their time to make things run smoothly. The most rewarding aspect of my role as president is seeing the results of all of our volunteers’ hard work. By that, I mean the happiness on the kids’ faces when they are on the field playing baseball. When one of our players gets their first base hit, or catches a fly ball, you can see a smile from ear to ear. This truly makes all of the hard work worth every bit of the effort. How is CYB maintained and funded? CYB is maintained and funded in many
different ways. There is a registration process where members pay a fee for the season. This helps the league pay expenses, such as: uniforms, insurance, equipment, field lights, field maintenance, etc. We do have a financial assistance program for those that need a little help covering the registration costs. Fundraising and donations from businesses in the community are a big part of our league’s stability. How many people work or volunteer with CYB? Can you tell us more about their roles? CYB relies on volunteers to make everything work. Our organization consists of a board of directors (seven executive members), a director of baseball, five division commissioners, team managers, assistant coaches, team parents, snack bar volunteers, and volunteer parents. The board of directors (executive members) includes the president, VP of operations, VP of administration, secretary, treasurer, player and coach agent, and fundraising agent. What do the players like best about being part of the CYB team? The players in our league enjoy being part of a team. I feel these kids get a great blend of individual achievement as well as being part of a team. We work hard to instill sportsmanship and teamwork while developing individual skill sets for the game of baseball. Hopefully the lessons they learn with our league spill over into other areas of their lives. In addition to
developing players, we support a junior umpire program. This is a fantastic opportunity that was put together by our chief umpire for both boys and girls to develop their leadership skills and learn the game from a different perspective.
“A SENSE OF COMMUNITY IS DEFINITELY CREATED WHEN EVERYONE PULLS TOGETHER TO MAKE IT A FUN EXPERIENCE FOR THE KIDS.”
Does CYB need volunteers? How should those interested in volunteering get involved? CYB can always use good volunteers. The strong foundation of our organizations relies on people volunteering their time to the children in this community. Anyone that is interested in a volunteer position or donating community services can go to our website, www.carlsbadyouthbaseball.org and go to the contacts section. There you can email anyone on the board of directors and we will find a spot for them to volunteer or donate. Is there anything else you’d want readers to know? Carlsbad Youth Baseball has been giving back to the community in many different ways. We are honored to have the opportunity to support youth programs with the City of Carlsbad and baseball programs at both Carlsbad and Sage Creek High Schools. Also, in an effort to support the kids off the baseball field, we are proud to announce our first annual Carlsbad Youth Baseball Educational Grant Program. One graduating senior from each high school’s baseball team will be awarded a grant to help with their continuing education after high school is over. We feel this will help enhance our role in this community of Carlsbad and supports what PONY baseball is all about – “Protect Our Nation’s Youth.” ¢

The foundation of any real estate relationship is trust, and Jessica believes that trust begins with the very first phone call. It’s about honesty, not salesmanship. Buyers and sellers need to know their Realtor® will give them the current market information they need to know, rather than just saying what they want to hear. Then, once the property is ready to go, Jessica taps in on her extensive marketing experience to follow up and seal the right deal. CAPTURING NATURE’S
Barbara Davies is an Artist Inspired by the Beauty of Nature by LINDA FRABL | portrait by Mark Hopkins Photography
B
arbara Davies has the glorious landscape of San Diego to thank for her successful oil painting endeavors. It all began back in 2001, when Barbara moved to the city from Boston after a divorce. She recalled, “I wanted to start a new life in a warm climate, and I fell in love with the beauty of the area as soon as I stepped off the plane.” Although Barbara has lived all over the county, she bought her current home in Carlsbad in 2014. She said, “I love the laid-back feel!” All of her life, Barbara has been art-obsessed. She fondly remembers creating finger paintings in kindergarten, and said, “I loved playing with all the colors!” She eventually studied photography in college, and worked in the advertising industry. Now that she’s on the West Coast, Barbara has purchased a local B2B magazine, and the whole operation is thriving with 14 employees. Describing her path towards oil painting, Barbara said, “I would take runs in the mornings along the coast, and the views were amazing to me. I AT - A - GLANCE was awestruck by the scale of the cliffs and Name: Barbara Davies ocean, and the brilliant light. I started painting Profession: Publisher, Artist to capture those beautiful coastal views.” Community: Carlsbad since 2014 Barbara’s works of art have been shown Hobbies & Interests: Oil painting, hiking, travel, yoga, live music, at the San Diego County Fair Art Show three scuba diving, kayaking, body boarding, swimming, sailing times, and she won an award from Favorite Local Spots: Carruth Winery, Campfire, Ignite Bistro, the Spanish Village Artist Collective in Las Olas, South Ponto beach, Carlsbad Promenade Balboa Park for one of her cliff paintings. Her canvases have also been displayed at Mission Federal’s ArtWalk in Little Italy for six years now, and she can’t wait to show her art at the first ever Carlsbad ArtWalk, which will take place Sept. 22 to 23. As a self-taught artist with no formal training, Barbara is tickled that her vibrant oil paintings have garnered so much praise. She explained, “When I first started painting, I never imagined selling my art; I painted just for myself. But the more I paint and show my work, the more I realize that people connect with my paintings and want to bring them home. That’s a great feeling, and that’s really my inspiration: to share the beauty that I see in nature with others.” To see more of Barbara’s art, visit www.bdavies.fineartstudioonline.com. ¢

The Carlsbad Village Faire
BIANNUAL EVENT IS LARGEST ONE-DAY STREET FAIR IN THE COUNTRY
T
he Carlsbad Village Faire returned for its 44th year, bringing in more than 100,000 visitors from all over, stretching 14 blocks along Grand Ave. from Carlsbad Blvd. to Jefferson St., and hosting approximately 900 vendors. The streets of Carlsbad were filled with plenty of intriguing sights and delicious smells, offering a variety of mouthwatering food and drinks, handcrafted arts and gifts, antiques, jewelry, unique clothing, home decor, plants, and more. One of the most popular attractions of the fair was the international food court, featuring more than 50 booths serving everything from Hawaiian to Italian cuisine. The Kiwanis Club of Carlsbad also provided delicious meals, continuing its
more than 25-year tradition of hosting a pancake breakfast at the Carlsbad railroad depot. The children’s area was also a hit, entertaining kids with games, a super slide, a bounce house, a rock climbing wall, and face painting. “The Carlsbad Village Faire is a celebration of Southern California culture and our community,” said Ted Owen, president and CEO of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce. Twice a year, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce hosts the fair in May and November. The next Village Faire will take place on Nov. 4 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. To find out more about other upcoming events in Carlsbad visit www.carlsbad.org. ¢

PLAN FOR PARKING!
Check the weather ahead of time and dress in comfortable clothes for walking. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats are a good idea for sunny days, and bring a water bottle if you're staying all day.
Onsite parking is available, as well as free offsite parking with shuttle service to the fair. Due to crowds and traffic, getting there can be hectic – be sure to leave with plenty of time to get to any special events you’re looking forward to.
ne of San Diego's most beloved traditions has returned. The San Diego County Fair – whose theme this year is How Sweet It Is! – was first established in 1880 and arrived at its current home, the Del Mar Fairgrounds, in 1936. The fair has undergone a number of name changes over the past 138 years, and though the name was changed back to the original San Diego County Fair in 2002, many locals still know it as the Del Mar Fair. The fair offers a wide range of attractions and events, from famously adventurous fair food to dizzying carnival rides. Community members of all ages have the opportunity to showcase their talents as well, with competitions and exhibitions for collections, crafts, wine and beer, fine art, fashion, floral design, and of course, livestock of all shapes and sizes. Summer concerts are another popular draw, and this year includes a variety of artists from Little Big Town to Kansas and more. The fair will run June 1 through July 4, and is closed Mondays and Tuesdays in June. Hours vary from day to day, so check times and find out about more special events at www.sdfair.com. ¢
