It’s Boat Time

I
’ve been champing at the bit to take the family out to San Vicente Reservoir. It reopened to the public this past fall after being closed since 2008 for the San Vicente Dam Raise Project, which created new emergency water storage for the region by raising the height of the dam. Our boat had been in storage since last summer. Needless to say, it needed a little cleaning to get ready for the water. Although I was alone with this thought, I felt cleaning the boat would be the perfect Saturday family project. After a long day using plenty of elbow grease – scrubbing, bribing, rinsing, twisting arms, and scrubbing some more – the boat was ready to go. Batteries charged. Oil checked twice (I learned my lesson the hard way on this, but that story is for another day). The expanded San Vicente Reservoir lived up to all the chatter. I think the new marina and boat launch is now the best in SoCal. The first boat ride of the season went well. Kids were nothing but smiles. My son took his turn at the helm and practiced his driving skills. My daughter giggled each time we encountered a wave. The engine sounded great, and the cool wind on our faces felt even better. I want to say the outing went without a hiccup, but we had a minor mechanical issue at the end of the day once we got the boat back on the trailer. My outdrive wouldn’t trim up into the travel position. Several people offered assistance. I politely declined, letting them know that I was contemplating leaving the boat behind and having someone deal with it the next morning. One gentleman, who had been out fishing with his buddies all day, wouldn’t take no for an answer. He jumped into my boat and handed me his business card (which showed he owned a boat repair service). Within minutes, he had his tool pouch out and Derrick Breaux my boat outdrive raised back into the proper towing position. Publisher When I thanked Dave of DCM Marine, he just said, “Hey man, that’s what boat people do. We take care of each other.” I couldn’t help but wonder how much better the world would be if everyone had a boating mentality and enthusiastically looked out for one another. Special thanks to Dave Perez of DCM Marine. If you need a knowledgeable boat guy for new and used parts, service, or repair, Dave’s your man. He can be reached at 619-913-0420. A NEW BEGINNING THE TAYLOR FAMILY ENJOYS THEIR HEALTHY CARLSBAD LIFESTYLE by JENNIFER FRAKES photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

ewly transplanted to Carlsbad from their native Colorado two years ago, the Taylor clan – parents Jeff and Jessie, and their three children, Baylee, Jonah, and Reis – moved west to advance their healthier lifestyle choices. Jessie elaborated, “Jeff and I were burned out on our careers and not exercising, eating badly, and partying in excess. We worked very hard on changing our lifestyle for the better, and became obsessed with health and fitness. Moving to California removed us from a lot of unhealthy parts of our life, and was the perfect opportunity to begin again.” Their new healthy direction prompted the Taylors to own and operate a 9Round 30 Minute Kickboxing franchise. Jeff proclaimed, “We are very transparent about how we were able to turn our life and our priorities around. We hope we can use our experiences to inspire others to take care of themselves and put their health first.” Ironically, the Taylor family’s quest for wellness coincided with a health scare for Jeff, when he had to undergo emergency surgery a mere four months after their gym opened. Fortunately, Jessie added, “Jeff
is now on the road to recovery and is expected to return to work in May.” The wonderful Carlsbad community was a godsend during the difficult time. Jeff commented, “We have met some of the most caring and nurturing families here in Carlsbad who have really had our back during these past few months. We are truly amazed by the kindness and selflessness of others.” The Taylor children are adjusting well to their new surroundings. Baylee is into theater and dance, and is working at Legoland. She is also in the leadership program for the high school ministry at Daybreak Church, which the family attends. Jonah and Reis have both taken up skateboarding and are big fans of the sport. As a family, the Taylors enjoy all of the different beaches and hiking trails. Jessie exclaimed, “We love being at peace with nature, and spending so much time outdoors. We have been surprised by the small town feel that Carlsbad has, and can’t imagine living anywhere else!”
“We hope we can use our experiences to inspire others to take care of themselves and put their health first.”

SPEAKING UP for Children Carl Kloss, Jr. Makes a Difference in the Lives of Local Foster Children by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo by Alicia Jeanne Photography
C
arl Kloss, Jr. believes all children deserve a voice, someone who will be their advocate, mentor, and friend. Carl is a Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) through San Diego County’s Voices for Children, working with local foster children and making a profound difference in their lives. CASAs are officially appointed by a juvenile court judge, authorizing them to make independent recommendations to the court on behalf of the foster children. “CASAs also serve as mentors for the foster children – meeting them, developing a trusting relationship with them, giving advice, and taking them on outings such as sporting events, theme parks, etc.,” explained Carl, whose greatest reward is seeing the children he works with progress in life, stay out of trouble, and succeed in their goals. Carl found Voices for Children while looking for a meaningful volunteer pursuit and felt that becoming a CASA would be a great fit for him. “My wife and I were temporary foster parents years ago. I truly believe that CASAs make a difference in the lives of foster children. I wish that there was a CASA for every foster child in San Diego County,” stated Carl. He encourages all those interested in becoming a CASA and/or supporting Voices for Children to visit www.speakupnow.org. “Voices for Children has several fundraisers throughout the year that are great opportunities to help out and learn more about the work of the organization. Also, the first step to becoming a CASA is to attend an information session. Details about these sessions are on the website,” related Carl. Before moving to Carlsbad nearly 11 years ago, Carl and his wife had a vacation condo in the area that they visited for 16 years. When they made the decision to make a permanent move to the community, they knew it was the right choice for their retirement. “Carlsbad is a well-managed, small city with many volunteers and retirees. I also love how accessible the ocean is to us,” said this beach-loving body surfer. Carl also enjoys spending time with his two grown daughters and six grandchildren, playing basketball and tennis and dining out with his wife of 46 years. Prior to retirement, Carl worked as an engineer who integrated scientific instruments onto spacecraft. “The Jet Propulsion Laboratory sent these spacecraft to Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune,” stated Carl.

Wild West Fest The City of Carlsbad will host its annual Wild West Fest on Saturday, May 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park. The free event will feature a petting corral, westernthemed activities and crafts, a salsa contest, pony and mechanical bull rides, root beer tasting, and more. “Wild West Fest is a step back in time since Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park was once an actual working ranch,” said Recreation Supervisor Rachael Shay. “The Wild West is something beach communities like Carlsbad don’t often get to experience. It’s a fun change of pace that also looks back at the city’s heritage.” Established in the late 1930s, Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park was once a working rancho owned by actor, philanthropist, poet, and preservationist Leo Carrillo. It is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is also a registered California Landmark. The San Diego County Fair’s Plant*Grow*Eat program teaches elementary school students about the connection between agriculture and nutrition. After planting their seeds, watering, weeding their plants, and watching their garden grow, even kindergartners now understand where their food comes from. After growing their plants, students are bussed to the fair to see how their entries fared during judging. Asked to reveal the secret of their first-place lettuce medley, 2016 winners Arturo and Emily confided, “Extra water. When our plants looked dry, we gave them a little more.” Last year, the Don Diego Scholarship Foundation, thanks to the generosity of donors, sponsored 73 buses (typically, $300 per bus) that enabled students from low-income schools to participate in Plant*Grow*Eat. Bus sponsors receive publicity, bus signage, and an opportunity to meet and accompany the sponsored students to the judging area. Sponsors can also serve as a judge. The Foundation is currently looking for additional sponsors for Plant*Grow*Eat in order to keep this program flourishing for future generations. A
nnie Pugmire began playing the piano at age six, but switched to violin by eight, and has been heavily involved ever since. “When I was younger I hated practicing,” she shared. "But as the years went by I’ve come to love music with all of my heart. It allows me to express emotions and feelings and convey beauty and peace in a way like no other.” Annie has played in the most advanced ensemble of the San Diego Civic Youth Orchestra for the past three years, in the first violin section. Much of the advanced repertoire the SDCYO plays is challenging and fun collegelevel orchestral music, which she loves collaborating with the other musicians who share in her passion and love for music. For the past three years, Annie’s played in the pit orchestra in several different ballet productions of The Nutcracker, a challenging score she loves because it’s “extremely worthwhile and so complex.” She also played the pit at her school’s production of Thoroughly Modern Millie, and is a regular at church services and retirement homes. “I love bringing the peace and solace of music to these people who need it in their lives,” Annie affirmed. “Nothing compares to live music.”

She also started an Inspirations Summer Crafts Camp for younger neighborhood girls back when she was 11, and honed and improved it for six years. At her old school she was VP of the Young Leaders in Health Care Club, communications officer of the Science Olympiad, and has been working on a project called Music Connections to earn her Girl Scout Gold Award, bringing music therapy to places such as retirement homes, soup kitchens, and the like. With future goals including a neuroscience major and minors in music performance and Spanish, Carlsbad Student Star Annie Pugmire is combining her worlds – music and science – to create a symphony of adventure!

A Million Knots
LOCAL STUDENTS FUNDRAISE FOR GIRLS’ EDUCATION IN INDIA photos by Natalia Robert
P
acific Ridge School students who are part of a student-led service learning group called A Million Knots recently raised approximately $10,000 at their fashion show to fund the education of 36 girls in India. About 300 people attended the fashion show, which the students created and hosted themselves. A Million Knots group members designed about a dozen outfits for the fashion show runway, which they then sent to a vocational school in India to be sewn. Students modeled the outfits and auctioned them at the event. Funds were also raised through ticket sales and donations. “We’re so happy with the community’s support and the event turnout,” said A Million Knots leader Mirai Patel. “Now
we can continue sending girls to school for years to come.” Mirai started A Million Knots in 2012. In its first year, the group raised enough money to build and staff a school near Alwar, Rajasthan. They have continued to raise the $2,000 per year needed to run the school. The majority of the money from the fashion show
will go towards the A Million Knots school, with a portion going to the vocational school which produced the runway outfits. “They’re not just raising funds for a school, but they’re making impossible dreams come true,” said Jerome Sigamani, Senior Director at Project Concern International, the San Diego-based nonprofit that manages the vocational school in India. Mirai and other group members will travel to India this spring as part of Pacific Ridge’s global travel program to visit the school they support and meet with other NGOs in the region. garden with a community plaza, shade structure, drought-tolerant plants, picnic areas, artwork, and seating. The community garden will feature over 30 raised planters for lease, and an area to be used for education and gardening demonstrations. The plots are administered through a partnership with the Carlsbad Community Gardens Collaborative. For more information about obtaining a plot go to www.carlsbadcommunitygardens.org. The park improvements incorporate sustainable energy and water-efficient features including LEED Silver-equivalent building
design standards, energy generating solar panels, a dual-port electric vehicle charging station, surfaces that help prevent storm water runoff, and water efficient landscaping. The $8.5 million project is funded with fees developers pay to the city to ensure quality of life is maintained to the standards set in the city’s Growth Management Program. The community center and gardens are scheduled to open in Spring 2018. For questions about the construction project contact the Parks and Recreation Administration at 760-434-2826 or parksandrec@carlsbadca.gov. ¢

Solar Panels on Rooftops WHY SO POPULAR? by AL REX
Y
ears ago we rarely saw the sight of solar panels on the rooftop of a Carlsbad home. Yet today it is not uncommon to see them scattered throughout many homes in our neighborhoods. Why have they become so common and so popular? There are many reasons and they vary: • For starters, our electric bills have grown significantly over the past several years, far outpacing consumer inflation. In fact, many of us did not realize that SDG&E raised their rate per kilowatt-hour by over 10% this past December, and there is talk of a “super user” surcharge down the road. Homeowners are looking towards solar to save money and all but eliminate their electric bill. • As an incentive, our federal government has
kept in place the 30% Federal Tax Credit for the next several years, practically reducing the purchase cost of solar by almost one third. I should note that if you do decide to invest in solar, either purchase for cash or find a way to finance the project so you can own it. Never lease solar, as this can materially impair your ability to sell your home down the road. Most buyers will not want to absorb the lease. • Purchasing solar does increase the value of your home. When a buyer purchases a home with owned solar panels, they may be willing to pay more for the property, as their monthly costs to heat/cool are significantly reduced. • A new “Power Wall” battery is currently being tested, which can be purchased for about one third the cost of existing home back up batteries. Once available, this will give the homeowner the ability to “keep” all of the kilowatts generated each day, as opposed to selling them back to SDG&E at a reduced price.

AN AFTERNOON
BY THE SEA
Discover Seaport Village + The Headquarters This Spring by SAMANTHA EDWARDS
I
f your idea of a perfect afternoon involves a lazy stroll along cobblestone pathways winding in and out of view of the Big Bay, ice cream cone in hand, while drenched in the warm Southern California sunshine, there’s a good chance we know where your head is at: Seaport Village. This 14-acre waterfront stretch is home to over 45 diverse shops, 17 eateries, and regular entertainment such as face painters, balloon artists, free outdoor concerts on Sundays, and an old-fashioned carousel – open 365 days a year. Seaport is also host to several fun events throughout the year, like the Busker Festival in the spring and San Diego Symphony’s Bayside Summer Nights concert series in the warmer months. Though sometimes characterized as a tourist destination, San Diego’s Seaport Village is ideal for visitors and locals alike. And with the recent restoration of the adjoining Old Police Headquarters (now simply called “The Headquarters”), Seaport is the perfect blend of old and new. With restaurants, specialty boutiques, and even a fully restored eight-cell jail block surrounding a central plaza, The Headquarters gives new life to what was once the central location for all police operations from 1939 to the late '80s. The Headquarters hosts a number of events throughout the year as well, such as paired food and drink tastings, pizza making classes, Salsa Under the Stars dance night, and the CincoTeca Dos fiesta. Last year the Port of San Diego launched a major redevelopment effort for Seaport Village, a move that remains controversial, in order to revitalize the area and bring in more revenue. Proposed plans include turning Seaport into a mixed-use commercial development, retaining fishing facilities, adding a hotel, and creating a better connection to the heart of downtown San Diego. The Headquarters space would not be affected. The project has not yet been approved, however, and construction would not likely begin for at least a few more years, so you still have plenty of time to get down there and experience a beautiful day at Seaport Village! ¢
