Call Me “Breaux”
D IRE C TO R O F B U SINE S S DE V E LO PME NT
A
little over a year ago, I wrote about how our kids were taking music lessons and having fun learning to play and sing various popular songs. They are now into music more than ever before, and a lot has happened in a year. In case you are hearing about this for the first time, Peyton plays guitar and sings. Audrey plays drums and piano, but she insists that drums are her number one. The two of them have come a long way over the last year. For starters, they formed a band and decided to officially name their two-person “brother and sister” duo Call Me Breaux. When we discussed their name choice, both Audrey and Peyton explained that people have called them by their last name (pronounced “bro”) their entire life – especially in sports – so it just makes sense for a band name. When my wife and I realized how much they liked singing and performing, we started to gradually convert our dining room into a small music studio. On any given day, you can often hear some type of music being performed by one or both of them. And every once in a while, something magical happens when they come together and play their growing set of songs. It’s fun to be preparing dinner and hear your kids jamming out in the other room. Who needs a radio when you can get live performances inside your house daily? And although they love to play music for the pure sense of accomplishment, now they’ve experienced the thrill of performing live on stage. Last month, they were invited to play a set at the world-famous Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood. A couple of weeks later, they played the House of Blues in San Diego. This was particularly special for them because quite a few of their friends were at the show. They made it clear to me that having their friends in the audience was the coolest thing ever! It’s a pretty crazy thing to stand in the audience and watch your kids (ages 14 and 12) get up on stage in front of a crowd. As a parent, I experience a wide range of emotions. I’m nervous for them. I’m proud of them. And I’m amazed at their determination and willingness to put themselves out there. So far, they’ve only played cover songs. But recently, they have decided that writing and producing their own original songs is where they want to go. They said that it would be awesome to hear their songs playing on the radio one day, so now they are more determined than ever to make this happen. A special thank you to The Fine Tune Academy for continuing to teach music theory to our kids, to Studio West for providing a great local professional recording atmosphere, and to family and friends (you know who you are) that offer amazing support for their music journey.

S PA R K I N G J OY PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZER TRICIA FIDLER HELPS OTHERS LIVE A MORE PEACEFUL LIFE by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photos by Mark Hopkins Photography
S
AT-A-GLANCE Name: Tricia Fidler Profession: Professional Organizer, Owner of Heywood Park Collective Community: Aviara/Serenata Hobbies & Interests: Traveling, crafts/knitting, art and music, vintage jewelry Favorite Places to Visit in 92011: Batiquitos Lagoon Trail, Beach Plum Cafe, Seasons@Four Seasons Resort, TriCity Wellness
ome years ago, Tricia Fidler found herself in a challenging stage of life. Her youngest daughter was moving out for college, and both of Tricia’s parents had recently passed away. Tricia and her husband were planning to downsize as “empty nesters,” but rather than embracing the new life chapter, Tricia felt overwhelmed. “I found that I couldn’t focus, because my thoughts were consumed by the emotional weight of my late parents’ belongings and the things that my family had accumulated since my children were young,” she recalled. During this time, Tricia encountered a bestselling book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. Through the book, Tricia was introduced to the KonMari Method™, which encourages people to cherish belongings that “spark joy” in their lives, express gratitude, and then let go of belongings that no longer represent who they are now. “Discovering Marie Kondo’s straightforward approach to finding joy and letting go with gratitude struck a chord with me,” shared Tricia. “I got to work on my closet and let go of dated suits and jeans. The more that I put the method into practice, the more peaceful my home became.” In 2016, Tricia attended her first KonMari™ seminar. “It gave me the opportunity to better understand the simplicity, yet depth, of the KonMari™ process and learn how to bring these lessons to
others in my community,” described Tricia. “Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to present at KonMari™ Consultant seminars to share my experience and lessons learned with new trainees.” Discovering this new approach to organizing ultimately changed Tricia’s life. Today, she is a Certified KonMari™ Consultant and owner of a consulting practice in Carlsbad, Heywood Park Collective. At the time of her certification, she was the 26th in the world. There are now 100 Certified KonMari™ Method Consultants, with Heywood Park Collective in the top four in California. “Deciding to pursue the role of certified consultant was a no brainer!” exclaimed Tricia. “It felt as if my whole life had been preparation for this line of work.” Tricia created her business to “share methods, insights, techniques, guidance, and elbow grease with others faced with a life filled to capacity,” she said. “At Heywood Park Collective, we believe what you choose to keep should be kept well!” Tricia’s work entails meeting with clients at their home to discuss their needs. “Acting as a coach, I facilitate working through the items that are difficult to let go of,” said Tricia. “As an organizer, I recommend storage options for the newly curated space – and teach the KonMari™ folding technique.” She also assists with donation or “discard location” recommendations and creating archival storage for sentimental items. But, perhaps, what Tricia most enjoys about her job is having the opportunity to support people on their journey. “It’s very rewarding to know I’m helping others find a more peaceful, less stressed way of life,” Tricia shared. ¢

Youth of the Year
BGCC RECOGNIZES MARIA DE LA MORA’S EXCELLENCE
T
he Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad (BGCC) recently named Maria De La Mora as its Youth of the Year, awarding her a $10,000 college scholarship. Polina Post was named runnerup and received a $1,500 scholarship for higher education purposes. Both scholarships are the result of the generosity of Julie and Matt Harelson and Keith Blackburn. A junior at Carlsbad High School, Maria moved to California from Mexico and joined the BGCC in 2009. Although she didn’t speak a word of English, Maria was able to gain the courage and skills to communicate with the help of BGCC. “I would go the Club every day after school. As time passed, my fear diminished,” said Maria. “At the Club I learned to be a good leader, I discovered my passions, and overcame my fears.” For now, Maria continues to organize activities for the young members of BGCC, volunteers at the San Diego Humane Society, and is involved with her church. She will go on to compete for San Diego County Youth of the Year. Maria hopes to attend UCLA and major in psychology. “My mom never graduated from high school, so I want to be a role model for Latinas by living a healthy lifestyle and getting a higher education,” said Maria. AT A GLANCE PARENTS: Andrea and Jason Adams CHILDREN: Ella (12), Marley (10), and Vivienne (8) COMMUNITY: Water’s End since 2012 PARENTS’ HOMETOWNS: Tucson, AZ for both PARENTS’ OCCUPATIONS: Jason Adams – Sr. Director of Business Development at Roche Molecular Solutions; Andrea Adams – Current Vice President and incoming President for Pacific Rim PTO PET: Rey, two-year-old female Australian Labradoodle FAVORITE PLACES TO VISIT IN 92011: Carlsbad State Beach, Ponto Beach, La Costa Resort and Spa, Legoland, Alga Norte and Poinsettia parks, Batiquitos Lagoon
ndrea and Jason Adams love living in the Water’s End community of Carlsbad, where they’ve resided for the past six years. “We love the weather, the ability to be outside year-round to go on walks, to play soccer, to ride bikes,” shared Jason. The outdoor accessibility is important, as they enjoy hiking, biking, fly-fishing, and off-road camping in their trailer. They are proud parents to three active daughters. Ella is in sixth grade at Aviara Oaks Middle School. Marley is in fourth grade at Pacific Rim Elementary. Finally, Vivienne is in third grade, also at Pacific Rim. “All three are highly skilled soccer players playing in competitive clubs with San Diego Surf (Vivienne and Marley) and Del Mar Sharks (Ella). We spend much of our time on soccer fields in Carlsbad and surrounding communities,” said Jason. They also share a home with Rey, a two-year-old female Australian Labradoodle. Jason is a Senior Director of Business Development with Roche Molecular Solutions, where he’s worked for 11 years. While Andrea has a background working in Clinical Science Management, she recently put her career on pause so that she could be in close proximity to school if needed. Andrea is currently vice president of the Friends of Pacific Rim PTO and the incoming president for next school year. The family is passionate about diabetes research. Ella was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in July 2012. They do yearly fundraising for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s annual walk for their team, aptly named Team Ella Bella. “We have now walked in seven JDRF One Walks, raised over $19,000 for the 2017 One Walk in November, and raised over $75,000 in total since 2012,” said Jason. Jason founded a Facebook group in 2014, called CGM in the Cloud. “The original intention was to share experiences with other T1 parents and T1 friends in his network regarding ‘hacking’ of a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) so that parents could see their children’s glucose number from afar,” Jason said. From the Facebook group came a foundation, NightScout, that Jason has been highly involved in. “The biggest thing that kept us afloat after diagnosis from the fog that T1D blanketed our home with was hope. Eventually that hope blossomed into a desire to positively affect our Ella’s life with diabetes and we began to learn more about our new life with Type 1 and what we could do to make a difference,” explained Jason. ¢

nurag Aiyer has experienced more in his 17 years than many people do in a lifetime. This Pacific Ridge High School senior has performed at Carnegie Hall (twice!) and will soon perform at the Sydney Opera House with world-class singers. “I have participated in the Southern California Honor Choir, All State Honor Choir, National Honor Choir and National Youth Honor Choir. My performance at Carnegie Hall with the National Youth Honor Choir this past February was life-changing. As I was singing each song, I could hear the beautiful voices surrounding me. I was proud to contribute my voice to this wonderful group,” revealed Anurag, whose first performance at Carnegie Hall was with the Pacific Ridge a cappella singers. According to Anurag, his passion for vocal ensemble began in fifth grade when a school administrator encouraged him to think about joining a choir. “I shadowed the middle school choir and loved the variety of music. I continue to push myself and express myself musically from the bottom of my heart,” stated Anurag. He immerses himself in classical and jazz music and can sight sing a sheet of music in under a minute. In addition to singing, Anurag has many interests, including tennis, robotics, surfing and ping pong. His passion for tennis began when he was very young and would go online each day to look at the world’s top 100 tennis player rankings. Anurag credits a good friend for piquing his interest in the robotics club. He has been in the club for the past four years and hopes to become a computer scientist in the future. Living near the ocean allows Anurag to surf as often as he likes. And as far as ping pong is concerned, he is a professional player who trained in China for three summers! Giving back is also important to Anurag. He fundraises for the rescue missions of The Liberty, an organization that aids those who have fled North Korea. “The main focus of my work is to bring awareness to the American public about how North Korean citizens are stripped of their rights by their government. I got involved with The Liberty because I was touched by the message that many North Koreans want the same opportunities we have here in America – the chance to go to universities and get a great job,” explained Anurag. ¢

North Coast Church is partnering with I Love a Clean San Diego, an organization committed to an environmentally engaged San Diego, for an Earth Day Clean-Up on April 21. Volunteers will be meeting at Poinsettia Community Park at 9 a.m. and will venture throughout North County to clean up and beautify over 100 sites. Participants will have the opportunity to keep San Diego clean and take advantage of the Earth Day holiday to take part in environmentally-friendly activities. Volunteers are encouraged to bring reusable supplies, snacks, comfortable shoes, work gloves, hats, and sunscreen. Volunteers under the age of 18 will need to have a parent or guardian signature on their waiver in order to participate and bring the waiver to the clean-up. Mini March Madness Mini March Madness, a fifth grade basketball tournament, celebrated its 11th year recently, displaying a great partnership and sense of teamwork between the Carlsbad Unified School District (CUSD) and the City of Carlsbad Recreation Department while incorporating the T.R.U.S.T. (Teaching Respect, Unity, and Sportsmanship through Teamwork) code of ethics. Each team was comprised of fifth grade boys and girls from all nine elementary schools in CUSD – Aviara Oaks, Buena Vista, Calavera Hills, Hope, Jefferson, Kelly, Magnolia, Pacific Rim, and Poinsettia. The winners for the year were the girls team from Poinsettia and the boys team from Pacific Rim. Each player earned a medal and a trophy for their school. For other news and information about CUSD visit www.carlsbadusd.k12.ca.us.
The Pacific Ridge School Boys’ Varsity Basketball team, consisting of students from Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Rancho Santa Fe, took part in their annual holiday meal delivery to La Posada de Guadalupe, a shelter for homeless men and farm workers, in January. The team arrived to the shelter for the fourth time with trays full of food, and got to talk with the men there to learn more about their backgrounds. “The boys jumped right into it,” said basketball coach Chris Burman. “It’s a way for them to see that they can have a positive impact locally, right here within our community.” The team also traveled to Tijuana last year to host a basketball clinic in an underserved community there, where they taught basic basketball skills to over 30 children and played friendly scrimmages against local basketball clubs. Community service is built into the curriculum at Pacific Ridge, giving students the opportunity to work on causes they are passionate about. Learn more at www.pacificridge.org.

Eggstravaganza Festival Welcomes Spring Calrsbad’s largest egg hunt took place over the Easter weekend, with hundreds in attendance at Poinsettia Park. The annual EGGstravaganza Spring Festival had everything from crafts, face painting, and cookie decorating to music and family relay games. The event was meant to welcome the spring season and also highlighted the Carlsbad Parks & Recreation summer camps with demonstrations and activities for children, including cooking, performing arts, sports, aquatics, and science. Activity cards and Fun Zone wristbands were available for purchase for those who participated in the Egg Scramble, a race for kids to collect candy-filled eggs throughout the park until all the eggs were gone. There were competitive and non-competitive fields for kids of all ages and photo opportunities with the Easter bunny. The afternoon was filled with fun for the whole family. For information on other upcoming events in Carlsbad visit www.carlsbadca.gov.
The Pacific Ridge School robotics team, 4262 Ridgebots, went undefeated for the second time in a row earlier this year in a FIRST Lego League match at Mater Dei Catholic High School. Every year, teams engage in a new challenge where they design, build, test, and program autonomous and driver-operated robots that must perform a series of tasks. This season, students participated in the Relic Recovery Challenge. Robots were required to pick up foam blocks and place them in a pattern, among other tasks. The team later won the Rockwell Collins Innovate Award for creating a robot that demonstrated a unique engineering solution to the game challenge, and were finalists at a regional tournament in Carmel Valley. 4262 Ridgebots is currently the highest-ranked team in their division in FIRST Tech Challenge. arlsbad Art Farm is a small visual arts school tucked away on a beautiful stream-side woodland property in coastal North County. Art Farm’s camps for grades 2–8 are designed to inspire a deep connection to animals and the natural world through traditional studio art education. Winner of the “Most Awesome Camp for Kids in SoCal” award for the past three years, Art Farm’s unique blend of outstanding art instruction in the woods with a menagerie of farm animals has enchanted local students and families for the past 14 years. Students learn how to sketch live animals, draw in charcoal, develop paintings, work a monotype printing press, and design paper boats for the popular Friday Boat Pageant and Creek Race. Three hours daily are dedicated art classes. The balance of time is spent with staff exploring the local habitat, hanging out with the animals, enjoying lunch, and making new friends. Each week ends with the All Camp Art Show, to which family and friends are invited. Camp sessions begin June 18 and are held Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Camp is extended to 4 p.m. Fridays only for the student art show. If the Price Is Right… by JESSICA BREAUX
Y
ou are thinking about selling your house – but only if you can get the right price! So, you find an agent that will agree to list your home for more than it’s worth. I hear this all the time, and it can be a recipe for disaster. Selling your home can be an emotional experience. And every seller wants to get the most that they can. The reason why you should not overprice your home is simple: it won’t sell. Pricing your home correctly from the beginning is critical. Buyers are more savvy than ever before. With today’s technology, it is easier than ever to spot a home that is overpriced. Many negative things can happen when an overpriced listing hits the market, including but not limited to missed buyer opportunities.
There are many aspects to selling a home for top dollar. The answer to achieving this usually comes down to three controllable variables: price, property condition, and marketing. The goal is to create a high demand for your home, and pricing it correctly can be one of the biggest influencers. Just like any other product, if careful attention is given to these variables, you will ultimately be pleased with the outcome. If you are considering making a move, you should be able to do so with confidence. Give me a call to schedule a meeting. It’s important to work with someone that you trust, and I would love the opportunity to get to know you and discuss your real estate goals. ¢
