Mother’s Day
A
lthough Mother’s Day was last month, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to write about it this issue. I have been blessed with great mothers surrounding me throughout my life. As we celebrate Mother’s Day each year, I often reflect on my childhood, teenage years, and young adulthood. I was raised by a very strong and supportive mother, and as a first grandchild, I also spent many of my younger years with my grandmother. Unfortunately, these two wonderful women are no longer with us today, but the memories and life lessons that I received from them are forever held close to my heart. Having lost my mother to a tragic automobile accident back in 2010 and my grandmother to cancer more recently, you would think that Mother’s Day would approach with some apprehension. However, much to my pleasant surprise, I’ve discovered that Mother’s Day has become one of the most meaningful holidays of the year. Even though the day typically starts with a little sadness – more like a period of reflection – it quickly turns into a very deep and significant day. Not only do I have an opportunity to celebrate the great memories surrounding my mother and grandmother, I also have the privilege of having several more fantastic mothers that surround me, support me, and make our lives more meaningful. While there are too many wonderful mothers in our friends and family sphere to mention in this letter, I would like to take a moment to recognize a few of them. First on the list, I would like to thank my wonderful wife, Jessica, for being such an awesome mother to our three kids (as well as many of the neighborhood kids). There are quite a few kiddos around the community (some adults in college now) that have grown up calling you “Momma” Breaux. We are all lucky to have you do what you do. Happy Mother’s Day, Jessica! It warms my heart beyond words. Happy Mother’s Day, Angelique! And a belated happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers in the world (past and present) that have impacted our lives. T
he Hadjis family – Gabby, George, and son Lukas – have lived in their south Carlsbad community for 13 years. “It’s a true familyfeel community,” Gabby said. At Nordstrom for 20 years, she feels lucky to currently be a stay-at-home mom, while George works for Canon as a national sales manager. Gabby is originally from Oregon and George from Huntington Beach, but they both had been working in Seattle when they met. “I was on a blind date that was a big fail – he was out with his good friend and I dropped everything when I saw George,” Gabby laughed. “I went up to him and started talking to him – four years later we got married!” As a family, they love hiking, exploring, skiing, soccer, the beach – and cooking has become a new favorite activity for Lukas, who uses the combined styles of both parents by following recipes or getting creative on his own. “I actually can cook but prefer to bake,” Gabby said. “George is an amazing chef!” The Hadjis family also claims to be “Disneyland dorks,” maintaining their kid-at-heart status with annual passes and visiting the amusement park frequently. They volunteer often. George is on the Parish Board of the Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church and teaches Sunday preschool there, plus he’s been an LA Galaxy SD rec soccer coach for the past seven years. Gabby is actively involved at Lukas’s school, Pacific Rim Elementary, where Lukas is a fifth grader. She’s involved

Overseeing the Pacific Rim yearbook is a “fun, but huge” commitment of Gabby’s, beginning in August. “With Pacific Rim being awarded a national Blue Ribbon School as one of two schools in San Diego county to receive this award,” she confirmed, “I wanted the yearbook to be extra special. Seeing [the students’] smiles and getting their friends’ autographs makes it worth all the hours I put into it.” For their community, the couple has held a holiday movie night the past four years, and works together with Toys for Tots collecting toys. “Our Waters End community has been generous, and every December we hold this event we get lots of support from the neighborhood. Both George and I believe in getting involved,” affirmed Gabby. “It’s important to lend a hand and support great causes. We believe in the saying Ghandi said: ‘Be the change you want to see in this world.’” ¢

F
or Carlsbad resident Samantha Farr, giving back to her community and being of service to others is her life’s work. She works at UC San Diego in the Department of Trauma, Burns, Surgical Critical Care, and Acute Care Surgery as a Surgical Intensive Care Nurse Practitioner. She is board-certified and is currently working to obtain a Doctorate of Nursing Practice with post Masters Adult Gerontology-Acute Care Specialty from the University of Arizona. “I have always wanted to be in the medical field. From a very young age, I dreamed of helping others,” shared Samantha. “As a nurse practitioner within an acute care setting, I am able to provide care for patients who are traumatically injured or critically ill and require intensive care.” Samantha’s service to others doesn’t stop at work. She is active in many philanthropic organizations, including the North County African American Women’s Association (NCAAWA), North San Diego County NAACP (for which she received the Distinguished Woman Award for community service in 2017), California Association for Nurse Practitioners, and San Diego Black Nurses Association. This San Diego native loves living in her community of Carlsbad. “There are many reasons to love living in Carlsbad, including the excellent schools, Carlsbad Village, unique and fine dining, and of course the best beach in San Diego,” she declared. When not working or volunteering, Samantha can be found reading, going to the beach, doing Zumba, and spending time with her family and friends. But above all, giving back is what matters to Samantha. “Service to others is service to yourself,” she said. “If everyone helps a little, it goes a long way.” ¢

Mel Montoya Keeps Busy in Carlsbad as a Wife, Mother, and Wedding Consultant by JENNIFER FRAKES photo by Mark Hopkins Photography
F
or Mel Montoya, staying busy is never a problem. This wedding and design consultant, wife, and mother of two young children is always on the go, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. “My goal is to enjoy each day, to live life to the fullest, and find joy in the little things,” said Mel. She and her family have lived in Aviara since 2013, and they love being within walking distance of Aviara Oaks schools and a quick drive to the lagoon and beach. As a wedding coordinator, Mel is an expert at helping brides and grooms fulfill their dreams of the perfect wedding day. “There are a few differences between a wedding planner and a wedding coordinator. Most brides want to be involved in the planning, especially with online resources like Yelp and Pinterest. My role as a coordinator is to review their wedding plans and make sure they’ve crossed their t’s and dotted their i’s,” stated Mel. According to her, hiring a wedding coordinator is like insurance for the day of the wedding. She runs the show on the big day, manages the team of vendors, and puts out any fires that may come up during the event. “It’s my job to make sure the bride and groom and their families are happy and enjoying every moment of the day,” said Mel, who has been in the wedding industry for more than 13 years. As Mel developed her wedding coordination business, she realized that many clients were looking for custom stationery and invitations for their event. This is how the custom design aspect of her business was born. “I get to know my clients even better when they hire me both for stationery and wedding coordination. Getting to know my clients is important to me, and even after more than 400 weddings I still experience an overwhelming sense of joy at the end of each wedding,” related Mel. When Mel isn’t coordinating weddings for her clients, she can be found with her family at various activities such as soccer, piano, surfing, jiu jitsu, and Girl Scouts. She also enjoys volunteering at her children’s school, exercising, and reading. “Most of all, we enjoy spending time together as a family. We love going to South Ponto for the sunset, and spending Sunday mornings there enjoying the view from the sundial. We live in paradise,” expressed Mel. ¢

Arbor Day Celebration
COMMUNITY PLANTS TREES AT POINSETTIA PARK
T
he City of Carlsbad recently hosted the Arbor Day Celebration as part of the city’s Earth Month campaign in April, designed to encourage recycling and increase awareness of sustainable practices in Carlsbad. The campaign was created to support California’s ambitious goal of 75 percent recycling, composting, or source reduction of solid waste by 2020. The day was filled with tree planting throughout Poinsettia Community Park, with approximately 65 local volunteers of all ages working to plant nearly 30 trees and keep Carlsbad environmentally friendly. Representatives from CAL FIRE, SDG&E, Davey Tree, Davey Resource Group, Western Environmental Consultants, the San Diego Regional Urban Forests Council, and West Coast Arborists were also featured at the celebration with tree maintenance displays and booths to educate the community about sustainability. Arbor Day was also celebrated at Stagecoach Community Park. The Arbor Day Celebration and the City Council’s Arbor Week proclamation are two of the four criteria that were required to be met for Carlsbad to retain its status as a Tree City USA for the 14th consecutive year. This designation, issued by the National Arbor Day Foundation, acknowledges the city’s ongoing commitment to tree care and urban forest sustainability. Pillars of Hope Grand Slam
66th Annual Golf Tournament Benefits BGCC
The Mitchell Thorp Foundation and San Diego Aviators World Team Tennis will host the Pillars of Hope Grand Slam on Saturday, July 28. The event includes dinner, tennis play by top-ranked pro players, and auctions to benefit the foundation, as well as a special children’s program. While parents enjoy the entertainment and dinner, the Grand Slam Kids Night lets them skip the babysitter so the kids can participate in dinner and games before returning to their parents to watch the tennis match. Kids Night check-in is at 3 p.m., and the dinner program begins at 3:30 p.m. The evening will also announce the winners of this year’s Pillar of Hope Award, which recognizes doctors, educators, therapists, and institutions who go above and beyond in the medical community. The Mitchell Thorp Foundation supports families of children with lifethreatening illnesses or disorders, with four programs: Medical and Home Assistance, Healing and Rehabilitation, Conversion Mobility Van Program, and Youth Leadership Council. A sold-out field of 144 golfers enjoyed a great day of golf at the spectacular Aviara Golf Club for the 66th Annual Golf Tournament, titled Clubs for a Brighter Future, presented by TaylorMade Golf Company. The tournament was a fundraiser event to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad (BGCC) and is one of BGCC’s most popular fundraising events of the year. The day featured specialty spirits, contests and raffles, lunch provided by West Steak and Seafood, an awards reception, and oncourse microbews courtesy of Ballast Point, Cigar City, Green Flash, Pizza Port, Oscar Blues, and Stone. Lucky Carlsbad resident Hope Rhoads took home the grand prize of the day, a trip for two to Pebble Beach in Northern California. The successful tournament was able to net more than $100,000. All of the proceeds will go to support the life-changing and impactful programs, activities, and services offered by BGCC. Carlsbad Unified Schools Recognized The California Distinguished Schools Program has returned after a three-year break, replacing the California Gold Ribbon Schools Program. Aviara Oaks Elementary and Pacific Rim Elementary are the two Carlsbad Unified schools that have been named 2018 California Distinguished Schools. According to the California Department of Education, 287 elementary schools across the state, and 33 elementary schools in San Diego County, are being honored under the Distinguished Schools Program this year. “These schools implement outstanding educational programs and practices that help California students realize their potential, and put them on the path to achieve their dreams,” said Torlakson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, in a news release. Carlsbad’s New Fire Chief The City of Carlsbad has named Michael D. Calderwood, a Fire Department veteran, as its new fire chief. Calderwood has prepared for this new role with more than 20 years of service in positions of increasing leadership. Fire Chief Mike Davis announced his retirement earlier this year, and Calderwood will be transitioned to the position soon. Calderwood began his career in the City of Pismo Beach as a firefighter/EMT and joined the City of Carlsbad Fire Department in 2003. He most recently served as a division chief. Calderwood has served in roles including executive leadership, resource management, labor/ management relations, emergency planning, professional standards, mentoring, and employee wellness. In 2017, he graduated from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government’s Senior Executives in State and Local Governments Program. He is also a 2013 graduate of LEAD San Diego. Local Nonprofit Hosts Benefit Concert photos by Dennis Pinnick
Vista-based nonprofit Solutions for Change recently hosted its spring benefit concert at The Crossings in Carlsbad. With approximately 100 guests in attendance, live music by pop-country artist Steven Cade (formerly known as Steven Ybarra), delicious drinks and food, a taco bar, and overall fun, the evening was a cause for celebration. The concert was able to raise nearly $100,000. All proceeds from the concert will go towards helping families in North County San Diego break the cycle of homelessness through Solutions for Change’s life-transforming program. Beach Bocce World Championship The Vigilucci’s Beach Bocce World Championship will take place at Dog Beach in Del Mar on July 14, although dogs are encouraged to be left at home. The tournament will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad (BGCC). There will be four divisions — Men’s Open Division, a Men’s Intermediate Division, a Women’s Division, and a Mixed Division — each with approximately 100 teams. Last year, 420 teams played 1,002 games on 83 courts and raised more than $100,000 for the BGCC. While the event is currently sold out, registrations for Sponsor and VIP teams are still available. Those interested in being placed on the wait list for regular registration can email events@bgccarlsbad.org with their name, phone number, and division requested. Q&A with
Carlsbad Youth Baseball President Jeff Johnson What is the history behind Carlsbad Youth Baseball (CYB)? When was it first established? Carlsbad Youth Baseball is a nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization and was established in 1992. As a league, we have grown and become a significant part of this community. The 2018 Spring season just came to an end and we
had over 700 kids signed up to play baseball. Ages range from 4-14, and the following is a breakdown of our divisions: Shetland (ages 4-6), Pinto (ages 7-8), Mustang (ages 9-10), Bronco (ages 11-12), and Pony (ages 13-14). PONY Baseball and Softball is the name of our parent company, which was established in the summer of 1951 in Washington, PA where the headquarters are currently located. The name of our parent company, PONY, stands for “Protect Our Nation’s Youth.” What is CYB’s mission? CYB is a nonprofit organization that serves hundreds of players and their families in Carlsbad and surrounding cities. Our mission is to provide the opportunity for all children, regardless of skill, experience, and financial
status, to have a positive and fun experience learning the fundamentals of baseball, teamwork, and sportsmanship. How does CYB serve the Carlsbad community? CYB serves the community by providing a safe, fun, and educational environment for kids to learn and play the game of baseball. Youth baseball is not only fun for the kids, but it brings the community together. Anytime there are games being played, you can see multiple generations cheering on the players. From siblings to parents and grandparents, everyone enjoys sitting in the bleachers with a hot dog or nachos from the snack bar. A sense of community is definitely created when everyone pulls together to make it a fun experience for the kids. June | July 2018 • 92011 MAGAZINE.COM • 17

What type of programs does CYB offer? Who can join and what is the registration process like? CYB provides many different ways for our players to develop over the season. A typical season consists of a combination of practices and games that build upon themselves to help players develop over time. In addition to that, we provide extra training clinics for coaches and players to help develop their skills. We also truly appreciate the relationships we have developed with our local high school baseball programs. Many players from the Carlsbad and Sage Creek baseball teams played in CYB when they were younger. A lot of these kids volunteer their time to help our league out with various events throughout the year. Where does CYB play? Carlsbad Youth Baseball plays at many different fields in Carlsbad. Our main location is Chase Field in downtown Carlsbad. We also play games at Poinsettia, Pine, Alga Norte, and Calavera Parks. In addition, some of our younger divisions play at the local elementary and middle school fields. What is your role with CYB? What are some of your duties or responsibilities? My current role with CYB is president. Duties and responsibilities include presiding over all meetings of the league membership and all meetings of the board of directors, being Chief Executive Officer of the league, being a 18 • 92011 MAGAZINE.COM • June | July 2018
member of all standing and special committees, identifying and presenting candidates for chief umpire and division commissioners to the board of directors for approval, maintaining the ability to assign duties not otherwise assigned within the bylaws, managing volunteers, interact with membership, and working with the Parks and Recreation division of the City of Carlsbad. What are the most challenging and most rewarding aspects of your role? The most challenging part of my role is time management. Being president of CYB is as rewarding as it is time consuming. Balancing my role as president, family life, and my “paying” job as a real estate agent can be challenging at times. That being said, I am lucky to have such a great group of volunteers in this organization that all devote countless hours of their time to make things run smoothly. The most rewarding aspect of my role as president is seeing the results of all of our volunteers’ hard work. By that, I mean the happiness on the kids’ faces when they are on the field playing baseball. When one of our players gets their first base hit, or catches a fly ball, you can see a smile from ear to ear. This truly makes all of the hard work worth every bit of the effort. How is CYB maintained and funded? CYB is maintained and funded in many
different ways. There is a registration process where members pay a fee for the season. This helps the league pay expenses, such as: uniforms, insurance, equipment, field lights, field maintenance, etc. We do have a financial assistance program for those that need a little help covering the registration costs. Fundraising and donations from businesses in the community are a big part of our league’s stability. How many people work or volunteer with CYB? Can you tell us more about their roles? CYB relies on volunteers to make everything work. Our organization consists of a board of directors (seven executive members), a director of baseball, five division commissioners, team managers, assistant coaches, team parents, snack bar volunteers, and volunteer parents. The board of directors (executive members) includes the president, VP of operations, VP of administration, secretary, treasurer, player and coach agent, and fundraising agent. What do the players like best about being part of the CYB team? The players in our league enjoy being part of a team. I feel these kids get a great blend of individual achievement as well as being part of a team. We work hard to instill sportsmanship and teamwork while developing individual skill sets for the game of baseball. Hopefully the lessons they learn with our league spill over into other areas of their lives. In addition to

developing players, we support a junior umpire program. This is a fantastic opportunity that was put together by our chief umpire for both boys and girls to develop their leadership skills and learn the game from a different perspective. Does CYB need volunteers? How should those interested in volunteering get involved? CYB can always use good volunteers. The strong foundation of our organizations relies on people volunteering their time to the children in this community. There you can email anyone on the board of directors and we will find a spot for them to volunteer or donate. Is there anything else you’d want readers to know? Carlsbad Youth Baseball has been giving back to the community in many different ways. We are honored to have the opportunity to support youth programs with the City of Carlsbad and baseball programs at both Carlsbad and Sage Creek High Schools. Also, in an effort to support the kids off the baseball field, we are proud to announce our first annual Carlsbad Youth Baseball Educational Grant Program. One graduating senior from each high school’s baseball team will be awarded a grant to help with their continuing education after high school is over. We feel this will help enhance our role in this community of Carlsbad and supports what PONY baseball is all about – “Protect Our Nation’s Youth.” ¢

s a junior at Carlsbad’s Sage Creek High School, Daniel Rubin has been given many opportunities to shine. “I joined ASB this year where I have put in hours of work to increase spirit at my school. I was the point man behind the planning of two pep rallies, spirit weeks, the Bobsquad cheering section for the fall and winter seasons, and other smaller spirit celebration days. Next year I am running to be ASB president and a part of the class executive board,” said Daniel. He has been able to do this while consistently maintaining A’s, including scoring and performing well in AP classes and tests.
Daniel also loves to run, competing in both cross country and track and field. He started running competitively in sixth grade. “At Sage Creek I was immediately immersed into the varsity cross country program, where we have won CIF for the past three years and gotten top five in the state meet each year. In track, I ran the San Diego section freshman 3200m record of 9:25 and qualified for many elite meets,” related Daniel.
Daniel’s biggest extracurricular activity is Younglife, which is a Christian high school ministry. “As the leader of Younglife on my campus, I invite as many people as possible and aspire to be a role model for what Younglife stands for,” said Daniel. “I have participated in community service by being a volunteer leader at Wyldlife (the middle school branch), serving at Younglife camps, attending National Honor Society events, feeding the homeless with my grandparents, and other little volunteer opportunities with community sporting events.” His father is the area director for Younglife in North County, making the ministry a true family affair. This high-achieving teen has some big aspirations, including a goal of attending Stanford. “Whether I achieve that dream or not, I am excited to go to college and spread my wings to see where my life takes me,” Daniel stated. He also has an ambition to backpack through Yosemite. But above all, Daniel hopes to make a difference in the world. “Most people think of me as that one fast guy, but I care more about the impact I have with leading Younglife,” he shared. “I hope to be remembered as the guy who made a positive impact on the lives of many of my peers at SCHS through relationships and ministry.” ¢

Check the weather ahead of time and dress in comfortable clothes for walking. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats are a good idea for sunny days, and bring a water bottle if you're staying all day.
Onsite parking is available, as well as free offsite parking with shuttle service to the fair. Due to crowds and traffic, getting there can be hectic – be sure to leave with plenty of time to get to any special events you’re looking forward to.
ne of San Diego's most beloved traditions has returned. The San Diego County Fair – whose theme this year is How Sweet It Is! – was first established in 1880 and arrived at its current home, the Del Mar Fairgrounds, in 1936. The fair has undergone a number of name changes over the past 138 years, and though the name was changed back to the original San Diego County Fair in 2002, many locals still know it as the Del Mar Fair. The fair offers a wide range of attractions and events, from famously adventurous fair food to dizzying carnival rides. Community members of all ages have the opportunity to showcase their talents as well, with competitions and exhibitions for collections, crafts, wine and beer, fine art, fashion, floral design, and of course, livestock of all shapes and sizes. Summer concerts are another popular draw, and this year includes a variety of artists from Little Big Town to Kansas and more. The fair will run June 1 through July 4, and is closed Mondays and Tuesdays in June. Hours vary from day to day, so check times and find out about more special events at www.sdfair.com. ¢

PROM DRESS: SEVENTEEN ON BEING 17 Until June 17 Seventeen female artists evoke and interpret being 17 years old through the great American Prom. In their work, the artists explore this girlhood rite of passage and all its uncertainty, excitement, doubt and hype. JANELL CANNON: STELLALUNA July 1 to Aug. 19 Janell Cannon’s picture books have won many awards and are treasured around the world. One of her most beloved books is Stellaluna, the tender story of a lost young bat who finally finds her way safely home. This exhibition celebrates the 25th anniversary of Stellaluna and will present all of Janell’s original artwork created for the book. TGIF CONCERTS IN THE PARKS For over 30 years, the City of Carlsbad has presented live music throughout the city. This year, nine concerts will be presented in four beautiful parks in Carlsbad.
