It’s Boat Time

I
’ve been champing at the bit to take the family out to San Vicente Reservoir. It reopened to the public this past fall after being closed since 2008 for the San Vicente Dam Raise Project, which created new emergency water storage for the region by raising the height of the dam. Our boat had been in storage since last summer. Needless to say, it needed a little cleaning to get ready for the water. Although I was alone with this thought, I felt cleaning the boat would be the perfect Saturday family project. After a long day using plenty of elbow grease – scrubbing, bribing, rinsing, twisting arms, and scrubbing some more – the boat was ready to go. Batteries charged. Oil checked twice (I learned my lesson the hard way on this, but that story is for another day). The expanded San Vicente Reservoir lived up to all the chatter. I think the new marina and boat launch is now the best in SoCal. The first boat ride of the season went well. Kids were nothing but smiles. My son took his turn at the helm and practiced his driving skills. My daughter giggled each time we encountered a wave. The engine sounded great, and the cool wind on our faces felt even better. I want to say the outing went without a hiccup, but we had a minor mechanical issue at the end of the day once we got the boat back on the trailer. My outdrive wouldn’t trim up into the travel position. Several people offered assistance. I politely declined, letting them know that I was contemplating leaving the boat behind and having someone deal with it the next morning. One gentleman, who had been out fishing with his buddies all day, wouldn’t take no for an answer. He jumped into my boat and handed me his business card (which showed he owned a boat repair service). Within minutes, he had his tool pouch out and Derrick Breaux my boat outdrive raised back into the proper towing position. Publisher When I thanked Dave of DCM Marine, he just said, “Hey man, that’s what boat people do. We take care of each other.” I couldn’t help but wonder how much better the world would be if everyone had a boating mentality and enthusiastically looked out for one another. Special thanks to Dave Perez of DCM Marine. If you need a knowledgeable boat guy for new and used parts, service, or repair, Dave’s your man. He can be reached at 619-913-0420. or Jenna LaMar, performing in the Carlsbad High School’s show choir is a way to combine her loves of singing, dancing, and performing on stage. “I have been in show choir for three years, and we have won many awards. It is a lot of work to make the competition set amazing – it’s like a mini Broadway show. One big honor for me was being one of the leads in the show choir set my freshman year and having solos my sophomore year,” said Jenna. She is quick to point out that show choir is a huge commitment, with preparation for competition beginning in the summer months. Members of show choir work with choreographers and vocal coaches and often travel great distances to compete during the February-through-April competition season. The acting bug bit Jenna quite early, as her family recalls her love for performing beginning when she was just a baby. Over the years, Jenna has participated in several local theater groups and been a part of many plays, musical productions, and drama festivals. “I have worked with a top acting coach and vocal coach. I also love dancing – it is a huge part of my active lifestyle. I love feeling strong, powerful, and confident,” related Jenna.

YO U R N E I G H B O R ’ S R E C I P E
INGREDIENTS 3 bell peppers (any color), halved and seeded ½ yellow onion, diced 1-2 cloves garlic, minced 1 cup white quinoa 1 cups water ½ cup tomato sauce 1 can black beans, drained and rinsed 1 cup of Mexican cheese blend, shredded ¼-½ cup olive or melted coconut oil Lime juice, to taste Salt, pepper, chili powder, and paprika to taste Optional Add-Ins: Corn Cherry tomatoes, quartered Jalapeño, seeded and diced
Optional Garnishes: Cilantro Avocado Lime wedges
DIRECTIONS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
6. 7. 8. 9.
Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Rub each bell pepper half with ½-1 tablespoon of olive or coconut oil, coating inside and outside completely. Place peppers on a foil-lined baking sheet and set aside. Heat approximately 2 tablespoons of oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add onions and garlic and sauté until onions are soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add quinoa to the pan and stir once. Add water and tomato sauce. Increase heat to high and bring to a boil. Cover and reduce heat to low. Let simmer until quinoa is fully cooked. You can tell it’s done when you can see a small white ring around each grain and all liquid is absorbed. Add black beans, lime juice, spices, and any desired add-ins to taste and stir. While quinoa is cooking, bake bell peppers in the oven until they are a bit soft and oil is bubbling, 10 to 15 minutes. Sprinkle cheese into each bell pepper and spoon in quinoa mixture. Bake again for another 10 to 15 minutes. During the last 5 minutes of cooking, take the peppers out and sprinkle some more cheese on top of quinoa, then return to the oven. Take them out when the cheese on top is melted. Serve with another squeeze of lime juice and any desired garnishes. Enjoy!

A Million Knots
LOCAL STUDENTS FUNDRAISE FOR GIRLS’ EDUCATION IN INDIA photos by Natalia Robert
P
acific Ridge School students who are part of a student-led service learning group called A Million Knots recently raised approximately $10,000 at their fashion show to fund the education of 36 girls in India. About 300 people attended the fashion show, which the students created and hosted themselves. A Million Knots group members designed about a dozen outfits for the fashion show runway, which they then sent to a vocational school in India to be sewn. Students modeled the outfits and auctioned them at the event. Funds were also raised through ticket sales and donations. “We’re so happy with the community’s support and the event turnout,” said A Million Knots leader Mirai Patel. “Now

we can continue sending girls to school for years to come.” Mirai started A Million Knots in 2012. In its first year, the group raised enough money to build and staff a school near Alwar, Rajasthan. They have continued to raise the $2,000 per year needed to run the school. The majority of the money from the fashion show
will go towards the A Million Knots school, with a portion going to the vocational school which produced the runway outfits. “They’re not just raising funds for a school, but they’re making impossible dreams come true,” said Jerome Sigamani, Senior Director at Project Concern International, the San Diego-based nonprofit that manages the vocational school in India. Mirai and other group members will travel to India this spring as part of Pacific Ridge’s global travel program to visit the school they support and meet with other NGOs in the region. n their one-year wedding anniversary, Brooklyn Cardenas told husband Kelly her dream of raising her family by the beach. Three years later, the family moved to Carlsbad, making Brooklyn’s dream a reality. “Within 45 minutes of moving to Carlsbad, we fell in love and never looked back!” he shared. “It was the biggest blessing. As much as we travel, nothing beats coming back home.” The Cardenases cherish their Waters End neighborhood. “We have made some of the greatest friendships living there.”
Brooklyn and Kelly met as coworkers first at Robert Cromeans Salon in the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. She began her career in a hotel salon, and feels there’s nothing better than to have someone fall in love with their hair. “What I enjoy most about my job is the connection I get to have with my guests and the way you can change the way a person feels,” Brooklyn shared. She continued, “Kelly started cutting his friends’ hair in high school, with a pair of old dog clippers from his dad. Never did he realize this would be a career. Now he loves every minute of it.” The Cardenas children, Makena and Maddox, enjoy riding bikes, swimming, playing softball and baseball, and their new Cavapoo Skyler. The family loves frequent travel, but at home they enjoy sunset beach picnics, the pool, or just hanging out with the neighbors in the cul-de-sac. Their passion for the Carlsbad community expands to volunteering. In addition to sponsoring many events at the kids’ school such as the Pacific Rim Elementary Jog-a-Thon, TGIF Music in the Park, Lancer Dancers, and local football/baseball teams, the Cardenases also seek to help raise money for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and those affected by type 1 diabetes. Every year in August, the Cardenases celebrate their neighborhood through a block party complete with food trucks, games, a photo booth, and all-ages music. “This year will mark five years in the greatest community on earth, and we plan to celebrate on a grand scale!” they confirmed. “Stay tuned!”

The San Diego County Fair’s Plant*Grow*Eat program teaches elementary school students about the connection between agriculture and nutrition. After planting their seeds, watering, weeding their plants, and watching their garden grow, even kindergartners now understand where their food comes from. After growing their plants, students are bussed to the fair to see how their entries fared during judging. Asked to reveal the secret of their first-place lettuce medley, 2016 winners Arturo and Emily confided, “Extra water. When our plants looked dry, we gave them a little more.” Last year, the Don Diego Scholarship Foundation, thanks to the generosity of donors, sponsored 73 buses (typically, $300 per bus) that enabled students from low-income schools to participate in Plant*Grow*Eat. Bus sponsors receive publicity, bus signage, and an opportunity to meet and accompany the sponsored students to the judging area. Sponsors can also serve as a judge. The Foundation is currently looking for additional sponsors for Plant*Grow*Eat in order to keep this program flourishing for future generations. aughing in the face of adversity is what ultimately healed Carlsbad resident Linda LeVier while she was recuperating, physically and emotionally, from a heart transplant 10 years ago. The experience not only prompted her to become more involved in relatable causes in the community, but to also write a book about her positive attitude during her ordeal, titled Laughing Hearts. Discussing her book-writing path, Linda recalled, “As I shared serious and funny stories about my medical journey, I was often told to record my tales so they could reach a wider audience. While my story is serious, my memories gravitated to the funny and touching times I had with my medical teams from two local hospitals. People began to tell me that I inspired them to look at challenges with an attitude that makes their situation more tolerable, especially if they can see the humor along the way.” The true motivation for Linda to turn her book idea into a reality was when her cousin, who had read the first draft, made Linda promise to publish her book just two days before he died. Linda is so happy she kept that promise, as her book is a tool for many others to see the light at the end of a scary tunnel. She elaborated, “Medical, emotional, and aging challenges can be met with attitude adjustment and accepting support from friends and organizations.” Some of the organizations that have helped Linda are now a platform for her to give back to others in similar situations. For example, Linda leads Laughter Yoga sessions at senior living

centers, and she volunteers for Donate Life and Lifesharing by doing presentations about organ donations to high school students. Linda is also on the board of directors for the Laughing Matters and the Pulmonary Transplant Foundations. Recently, Linda had a big celebration to honor the 10-year anniversary of her heart transplant surgery. Discussing her event, Linda exclaimed, “It brought together people who supported me from the beginning of my illness with others I met during my medical journey. It was an informal party with music, food, my medical souvenirs, ping pong, hula hoops, and other toys. The party was all about my gratitude for the gift of life!”

VOICE FOR CHILDREN MAURICE VOCE ADVOCATES FOR FOSTER CHILDREN by LINDA FRABL | photo by Alicia Jeanne Photography
W
hen Maurice Voce became an empty nester after his only child left for college, he wanted to fill the void by continuing to work with children somehow. Maurice had spent many years as a certified high adventure adult leader with the Boy Scouts of America, and he shared, “I wanted to find another organization that would enable me to work directly with kids and would provide the training and support needed for me to be successful making a difference in their lives.” Then one evening Maurice happened upon a commercial on television about the nonprofit Voices for Children. Maurice recalled, “The public service message piqued my interest – and tugged at my heart – enough that I attended an information session. It was there that I learned that the Voices for Children organization administered the Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program for San Diego County. From there, I began the process of becoming a CASA.” As an advocate who is officially appointed by a juvenile court judge, Maurice has access to his assigned foster child’s records, and he speaks up on that child’s behalf. Maurice admitted, “Taking on a new case can be a challenge, but the one-on-one time you get to spend with the child is a sweet reward. You realize what a stabilizing factor you can be to a child who is facing uncertainty and constant change. The personal impact on you is profound.” An especially heartfelt memory that Maurice enjoyed as a CASA was when he got a call from one of the foster children he was advocating for. Maurice remembered, “He asked me to come and spend time with him because he missed me. At that moment I realized I was making a difference.” The Voices for Children organization has many fundraising functions throughout the year. On May 20 there will be the 6th Annual Wine, Women and Shoes event taking place at the historic Canfield-Wright Estate in Del Mar. The biggest annual fundraiser is the Starry Starry Night event that takes place Sept. 9 at a private estate in Rancho Santa Fe. Solar Panels on Rooftops WHY SO POPULAR? by AL REX
Y
ears ago we rarely saw the sight of solar panels on the rooftop of a Carlsbad home. Yet today it is not uncommon to see them scattered throughout many homes in our neighborhoods. Why have they become so common and so popular? There are many reasons and they vary: • For starters, our electric bills have grown significantly over the past several years, far outpacing consumer inflation. In fact, many of us did not realize that SDG&E raised their rate per kilowatt-hour by over 10% this past December, and there is talk of a “super user” surcharge down the road. Homeowners are looking towards solar to save money and all but eliminate their electric bill. • As an incentive, our federal government has
kept in place the 30% Federal Tax Credit for the next several years, practically reducing the purchase cost of solar by almost one third. I should note that if you do decide to invest in solar, either purchase for cash or find a way to finance the project so you can own it. Never lease solar, as this can materially impair your ability to sell your home down the road. Most buyers will not want to absorb the lease. • Purchasing solar does increase the value of your home. When a buyer purchases a home with owned solar panels, they may be willing to pay more for the property, as their monthly costs to heat/cool are significantly reduced. • A new “Power Wall” battery is currently being tested, which can be purchased for about one third the cost of existing home back up batteries. Once available, this will give the homeowner the ability to “keep” all of the kilowatts generated each day, as opposed to selling them back to SDG&E at a reduced price.

AN AFTERNOON
BY THE SEA
Discover Seaport Village + The Headquarters This Spring by SAMANTHA EDWARDS
I
f your idea of a perfect afternoon involves a lazy stroll along cobblestone pathways winding in and out of view of the Big Bay, ice cream cone in hand, while drenched in the warm Southern California sunshine, there’s a good chance we know where your head is at: Seaport Village. This 14-acre waterfront stretch is home to over 45 diverse shops, 17 eateries, and regular entertainment such as face painters, balloon artists, free outdoor concerts on Sundays, and an old-fashioned carousel – open 365 days a year. Seaport is also host to several fun events throughout the year, like the Busker Festival in the spring and San Diego Symphony’s Bayside Summer Nights concert series in the warmer months. Though sometimes characterized as a tourist destination, San Diego’s Seaport Village is ideal for visitors and locals alike. And with the recent restoration of the adjoining Old Police Headquarters (now simply called “The Headquarters”), Seaport is the perfect blend of old and new. With restaurants, specialty boutiques, and even a fully restored eight-cell jail block surrounding a central plaza, The Headquarters gives new life to what was once the central location for all police operations from 1939 to the late '80s. The Headquarters hosts a number of events throughout the year as well, such as paired food and drink tastings, pizza making classes, Salsa Under the Stars dance night, and the CincoTeca Dos fiesta. Last year the Port of San Diego launched a major redevelopment effort for Seaport Village, a move that remains controversial, in order to revitalize the area and bring in more revenue. Proposed plans include turning Seaport into a mixed-use commercial development, retaining fishing facilities, adding a hotel, and creating a better connection to the heart of downtown San Diego. The Headquarters space would not be affected. The project has not yet been approved, however, and construction would not likely begin for at least a few more years, so you still have plenty of time to get down there and experience a beautiful day at Seaport Village! ¢
