ith all of the recent rain and cold weather, I can’t believe we are finally thinking about summer! I’ve always loved summer. As a kid, I would count the days until school was out. It still seems like yesterday. As parents, the mere concept of summer can be a bit overwhelming. Several months of kids at home? What in the heck are they going to do every day? How am I going to pull this off? For these reasons, we have been publishing our popular Annual Summer Camp Guide for the past five years. Although we had no idea of how popular these issues were going to become, this year I am proud to present you with the largest Annual Summer Camp Guide (see page 26) that we’ve published. It is bigger and better than ever! It includes tons of options to keep your youngster occupied during the long break. Grab a cup of tea (or a glass of wine), kick up your feet, and take a peek at the variety of camps being offered this summer. Be sure to reserve your kid’s spot early this year, as summer camps are in high demand and things fill up quickly. And most importantly, tell them you saw their camp in 92024 Magazine!

The Millers Help Bring Joy and Hope to Children with Heart Disease
O
ver the past decade, Jeff and Anita Miller have spread hope and joy to children with heart disease, all in the memory of their beloved daughter, Ariana. “We lost Ariana to congenital heart disease in 2008. Ariana was a talented young musician, and as she struggled with her disease, it was music that brought joy into her life. Ariana was the first child with heart disease to receive music therapy from Resounding Joy. In 2010, using funding provided in Ariana’s memory, we partnered with Resounding Joy to bring music therapy to children with heart disease at Rady Children’s Hospital through the Ariana Miller Music with Heart Program,” explained Jeff. Since that time, Resounding Joy and Music with Heart have provided no-cost music therapy to more than 2,000 children. According to the Millers, most of these children have been patients with cardiac disease, but recently the program has served cancer patients as well. The Ariana Miller Music with Heart Program is primarily funded through Heart of a Child, an annual benefit concert that has also become the premier showcase of young musical talent in San Diego. “The concert features a diverse array of young instrumentalists and vocalists from all over San Diego County. Past performers have appeared on network television, played 8th Annual Carnegie Hall, and won national competitions. Last year, we raised nearly $90,000!” shared Jeff and Anita. The Millers are especially grateful to Judy Grant, the event’s executive producer for the past several years. “She produces the actual Saturday, May 25 concert and there wouldn’t be a show without Doors open at 5:30 p.m. her. She has been instrumental in making this Concert begins at 7 p.m. the exceptional event it has become today.” Conrad Prebys Performing In addition to his work for Music with Heart, Arts Center, La Jolla Jeff is a diagnostic radiologist with San Diego www.resoundingjoyinc.org Imaging servicing Tri-City Medical Center and Palomar Medical Center, as well as the medical director at San Diego Imaging’s outpatient centers in Oceanside and Escondido. Anita is on the Board of Directors for Names: Jeffrey Miller, MD and Anita Miller Resounding Joy and is a math tutor with Casa de Amistad in Solana Child: Delaney Miller Beach. Their other daughter, Delaney, is currently a graduate student Community: Encinitas at Stanford. Delaney graduated from Princeton University this past Hometowns: Jeff is from Wisconsin and Anita is from Minnesota, spring with a degree in mechanical engineering. In their spare time, but both have lived in California since the ‘90s the Millers can often be found outdoors. “Running is big in our family. Favorite Local Spots: Swami’s, Pannikin, Firenze Trattoria, and Saint Archer Delaney was a member of the Princeton track and cross country teams, and in 1990, I won the St. Louis Marathon,” revealed Anita. Know someone that should be profiled in 92024 Magazine? “We also enjoy walks, cooking, and traveling.”

TALENT IN TRAINING Studio West Offers Music Production Camps for Young Musicians
S
tudio West has been San Diego’s premier recording studio for over 40 years, but recently some new clients have been working there. In 2015, owner Peter Dyson started a series of week-long music production camps for middle and high school students, largely due to his own children’s musical journey. “My daughter plays the harp and my son is a drummer. They both had amazing teachers and great experiences performing with various ensembles, but a recording studio is a different environment that helps musicians grow.” The week-long camps involve instruction in songwriting, production and performance. Many students have a background in music theory and traditional instruments, but it’s not a requirement. “A laptop is now a musical instrument, just like a piano or guitar, but to play it requires the same instruction, discipline, and hard work that’s required for more traditional instruments,” said Dyson.
Performing in a studio is intimidating, but students rise to the occasion. As the lead instructor, San Diego songwriter, performer, and father of two multi-instrumentalist preteen boys Shawn Rohlf explains it, “I’m amazed at the musicianship and work ethic of the kids. If they are this good now, where will they be in 10 years?” At the end of the week, parents and students listen to the songs that students have written and produced over the week. The experience leaves many ready for more. As student Chrysta Hlavacek (17) puts it, “Making music with talented artists is my dream job, and going to Studio West helps me get there.”

Gutsy Girls
LOCAL GROUP MAKES WAVES IN ENCINITAS AND BEYOND
A
group of local fourth through sixth grade girls, called the Gutsy Girls, are doing big things to empower themselves and others. Gutsy Girls was formed two years ago by Leslie Clay as a way to help her two elementary-aged daughters discover themselves, develop friendships, and face their fears. The group met once a week, beginning with creative mantras full of confident phrases, and embarking on new adventures in singing, set construction, holding tarantulas, community service, public speaking, and more. A big part of the “gutsy” agenda has been community outreach. In 2017, the Gutsy Girls created a GoFundMe campaign for the Detroit Community Coat Drive, which provides elementary school students with warm coats for the winter. They surpassed their original goal of $1,300, and raised $2,915. Employees at GoFundMe were so impressed with their campaign that

they even granted an additional $1,000 contribution. “I was so proud of how hard the Gutsy Girls worked sewing beanies, making art, and selling lemonade at Seaside Market to show their love and connection with other children in another part of the country,” said Leslie. The group hosted a dinner for the homeless at Cottonwood Creek Park through the Fill-A-Belly program in Encinitas, preparing and serving meals to over 60 people. The Gutsy Girls also recently hosted a local open mic night to raise money for rural communities in Ntungamo, Uganda while facing their public performance fears at the same time. They opened the evening with a play called The Paper Bag Princess, adapted from the children’s book of the same title, followed by group and solo performances. The Gutsy Girls are continuing to grow and inspire others with their confidence, kindness, curiosity, and guts. To learn how to get involved, contact gutsygirlsca@gmail.com.

PILOT PROGRAM BRINGS LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES TO LOCAL STUDENTS
T
he Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito (BGCSDTO) have joined forces with San Diego LabRats to provide science, technology, engineering, art/creativity and math (STEAM) learning experiences in a fun and safe environment after school for fifth through eighth grade students in San Diego County. The STEAM Discovery Center will be hosted at the BGCSDTO Griset Clubhouse in Encinitas running from April through June, featuring a technology lab, hands-on games and activities, and academic coaching resources for STEAM subject areas. Community members will also have the opportunity to propose their own STEAMfocused classes and work in partnership with the Discovery Center. “Future success for our students requires skills in STEAM areas,” said San Diego LabRats Chief Science Officer Dr. Shawn Carlson. “The Discovery Center will remove the fear and replace it with ‘fun while you learn’ activities. Our scientist-educators will provide robust, dynamic, and fun programming that nurtures the scholarly and entrepreneurial
pursuits – and inner spirit of discovery – for our young people. And using the Next Generation Science Standards as our guiding compass, we will help shape and create our next generation of leaders in science and technology.” The Encinitas Charities Consulting Group (ECCG) is leading fundraising for the project, and aims to make one scholarship available for every paid student. “It’s in the interest of everyone in our community to extend this program to all students no matter their financial background,” said ECCG founder Jim Merrill. “We believe progress is created when a community unites in a purpose, and educating our youth is something we can all be passionate about and get behind.” Discovery Center Hours will be 3 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays; 3 to 5 p.m. on Fridays; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. TOBY WELLS FOUNDATION GOLF CLASSIC HELPS KIDS AND ANIMALS IN NEED
T
he Toby Wells Foundation will hold its 18th Annual Toby Wells & Craig Castaneda Golf Classic on June 14 at the Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside. This year’s theme is Route 66. The tournament is the foundation’s primary fundraising tool to fund all of the programs that provide support to hundreds of underprivileged children and neglected animals throughout San Diego County and other parts of Southern California. The Toby Wells Foundation was first established after Adrienne Wells and April West began searching for ways to raise funds and
awareness and honor the memory of their brother Toby, who died from medical complications after paralysis from a swimming accident. The tournament began shortly after the foundation’s establishment, when the Wells family purchased a 300-acre ranch called Blue Apple Ranch. The ranch is populated with several types of rescued animals who are cared for by disenfranchised and disabled children. Toby was known for his love of animals and frequently rescued dogs in animal shelters. Proceeds from the tournament will go to funding a one-day, outdoor afternoon of fun
for 250 local foster youth through the nonprofit Voices for Children, field trips for children of military households through the Armed Services YMCA, a work-readiness internship for foster youth at San Pasqual Academy and at-risk youth from Abraxas High School and Warner Springs High School, a holiday shopping spree for Polinsky Children’s Center and the Armed Services YMCA where each child receives a $200 gift card to Walmart, and assistance in caring for Blue Apple Ranch’s rescued animals. For more information about the foundation or to buy tickets visit www.tobywells.org.

Cardiff State Beach Receives Award San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy Executive Director and Principal Scientist Doug Gibson accepted the official award for Cardiff State Beach as Best Restored Beach on the West Coast at the 2019 Coastal Summit in Washington, D.C., hosted by the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association in March. The Cardiff Beach Living Shoreline Project aims to protect the shoreline between Restaurant Row and South Cardiff State Beach from flooding during large storm events and projected sea level rise, create coastal dune habitat, create a pedestrian path along the dunes, and beneficially reuse sand from future San Elijo Lagoon annual dredging operations. The project is headed by the City of Encinitas, in partnership with the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy, California Department of Parks & Recreation, California State Coastal Conservancy (SCC), and United States Fish and Wildlife Service, with grants from the SCC and the Ocean Protection Council. Harbaugh Seaside Trails Groundbreaking
San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy broke ground on habitat enhancement of Harbaugh Seaside Trails, the three-acre overlook bordering Solana Beach and Cardiff-by-the-Sea, in early March. Improvements of the open space include: removal of invasive plant species for native plantings that will attract pollinators and link the habitat to San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve; installation of a viewing deck and interpretive signs on the northern end; installation of a donor monument, designed by Coastal Rail Trail artist Betsy Schulz, on the southern end; and construction of a railroad undercrossing that will provide visitors safer coastal access to the reserve. The restoration is expected to take one year, with an anticipated grand opening of the trails in early 2020. San Diego’s north coastal communities fought to protect Harbaugh Seaside Trails, formerly known as The Gateway Property, for years. In 2011, San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy was able to purchase the property with the support of lenders and a $1.15 million gift from The Harbaugh Foundation. Services include rental assistance, licensed therapy, financial assistance for childcare and transportation expenses, and more. “Housing First is a life-saving program,” said CRC Executive Director John Van Cleef. “These funds will help provide domestic violence survivors with the resources to overcome financial obstacles, escape their abuser, and rebuild their lives.” Established in 1979, CRC works to end hunger, homelessness, and domestic violence in North County San Diego. Last year alone, CRC provided emergency shelter to 123 survivors of domestic violence and responded to 1,388 calls on its 24-hour hotline. Skate Rising: Compassion and Empowerment photo by Mike Moore
Encinitas’ Skate Rising program, run by Exposure Skate, teaches local girls compassion through service and empowerment through skateboarding. Participants meet once a month to learn about a need in the community, help address the need through a community service project, then take part in a skate clinic run by skate industry professionals, allowing each girl to recognize her ability to make a difference within herself, the community, and beyond. Skate Rising has grown exponentially since its inception less than three years ago, further expanding its outreach to the community along the way. The program held a tour up the coast focused on feeding the homeless, and also participated in an international day of service in which six events were held around the world on the same day focused on anti-bullying, empowerment, and supporting those in need. Skate Rising meets at Encinitas Community Park every second Saturday of the month from 9 to 11 a.m. Learn more at www.exposureskate.org/skaterising.
2019 Encinitas Rotary Peacemaker The Encinitas Rotary Club has named Azim Khamisa as the recipient of its 2019 Peacemaker Award. Azim founded the Tariq Khamisa Foundation (TKF) after his only son, Tariq, was killed by a 14-year-old gang member, Tony Hicks, in San Diego in 1995. Tony was tried as an adult and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Azim, however, felt that the tragedy created victims on both ends of the gun. He reached out to Tony’s grandfather, Ples Felix, and the two men came together in the spirit of healing to end youth violence. In November 2018, with Azim by his side, Tony was granted parole. Once released from prison, Tony will join Azim and TKF to help share their message of forgiveness, peace, and hope. The Encinitas Rotary Club Peacemaker Award recognizes community members who have made a significant difference in promoting tolerance, understanding, conflict resolution, and peace. “Azim’s powerful message of forgiveness and compassion instills hope for those vulnerable to violence, crime, harm, and poverty,” said Encinitas Rotary Club President Deb Vaughan-Cleff. “He is truly a remarkable individual.” Learn more at www.tkf.org and www.encinitasrotary.com.

is Joint Commission accredited and licensed and certified by the State of California. As Jim and Patricia Brady stated, “We personally understand the toll that addiction takes on families and we want to be a part of the solution to this devastating problem.” According to Dr. Leslie Sanders, Program Director, research shows that therapy is effective when built on a relationship of mutual trust and respect. “At AToN Center, we offer one individual therapy session every weekday to allow our residents to build relationships with the clinical team. There are also three group therapy sessions each weekday, as well as a Saturday morning group. Our staff is committed to the long-term recovery of our residents,” explained Dr. Leslie Sanders. In addition, transportation is offered to community meetings such as SMART Recovery, LifeRing, Refuge Recovery, and 12 Step. With this exposure to multiple styles of meetings, residents are able to construct a support system that works for their individual needs. Self-care and balance are hallmarks of AToN Center’s program, therefore residents are offered an array of holistic services including: acupuncture, massage, hypnotherapy, physical therapy, meditation, yoga, nutritional education, SPECIAL ADVERTISEMENT
and personal training at AToN Center’s onsite gym. Recognizing the toll that addiction can have on families, AToN Center’s intensive family and couples therapy offers a supportive and therapeutic environment for families to come together and begin the healing process. AToN Center is a private, 10-acre sanctuary comprised of five estates and is limited to 25 residents to ensure that individualized care can be provided with a high staff to resident ratio. “It is our belief that a ‘one size fits all’ approach to addiction recovery can be ineffective. We are a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-based program, and our clinical team is made up of licensed psychologists and certified chemical dependency counselors who specialize in treating depression, anxiety, and trauma through a multitude of therapeutic approaches,” stated Dr. Cassandra Cannon, Clinical Director. Treatment plans are individualized to meet each resident’s unique needs. The program at AToN Center is designed for motivated individuals, and the population generally consists of executives and professionals who are looking to make a dramatic change in their lives. he Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA (Ecke YMCA) is gearing up for another fantastic summer! With over 140 different camp offerings for campers ages 5 to 17, the Ecke YMCA is pleased to be presenting 20 new camps this summer, along with a new lunch program starring Ki’s Restaurant delivering lunches for campers each day. Camps are offered in nine categories: traditional, animal, aquatic, specialty, educational, sports, itty-bitty, Trisha’s, and Teen. Camp officially runs from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. – though before and aftercare is available. The Ecke YMCA prides itself on a focus of safety, fun, and building relationships. First and foremost, parents and guardians want to make sure their children will be well taken care of physically, mentally, and emotionally when they embark on their camp adventure. They can rest assured knowing that the camp management team has a combined 75 years of camp experience, and camp leaders receive 30 hours of training, with unit leaders receiving 60, ensuring the safest environment for all participants and staff. Unique in its ability to do so, the Ecke YMCA takes full advantage of the fun San Diego has to offer. They visit San Diego staples such as SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, and Legoland, as well as local beaches up and down the coast. They also have a one-of-a-kind aquatic park at their Carlsbad Lagoon site, where campers can do everything from kayaking, paddleboarding, jumping on the water trampoline, sliding down water slides, and launching off the blob. This unique setting is home to one of the YMCA’s most popular camps, CAMP H2O. To build relationships locally, Camp Director Chasen Eddow explained, “We partner with many local organizations who share a similar mission to the YMCA of San Diego. These include Coastal Roots Farm, Junior Achievement of San Diego County, local parks and beaches, as well as multiple schools in the area.” He continued, “Partnering with surrounding organizations creates unification among our community, building a strong foundation.” Camps such as VolunTeen and Leaders in Training provide volunteer services to the community. ith school out of session, summer can be tons of fun – but it can also lead to a loss of academic skills called the “summer slide.” Luckily, Mathnasium of La Costa and Mathnasium of North Carlsbad are here to help stop the slide! Owner Karen Lossing explained, “Students can close gaps from the previous year, deepen problem solving, build up their automaticity in facts and number sense, get a refresher for an upcoming course, or get a sneak peek of skills they will learn in the new year.” The summer programs allow for 16 or 24 sessions on a drop-in basis for grades 2 through 12. An initial assessment helps the dedicated Mathnasium team develop an individualized learning plan for each student, and a before-and-after comparison report documents growth and achievement by the end of summer. Karen is proud to say the Mathnasium Method has demonstrated great success in helping kids catch up, keep up, or get ahead in math. “Mathnasium’s programs have 98% of the parents polled stating their students improved,” she shared. Karen is a former third grade, fifth grade, and special education teacher who has written math curriculum for elementary campuses, as well as serving as an administrator. ith the growing popularity of STEAM programs in schools, many parents are turning to technology camps to keep their students entertained and engaged during summer months. CodeREV Kids is one of Southern California’s fastest growing tech camps, and according to Founder Evan Boorman, offers the only standards-aligned summer tech program that focuses on math and science. Evan explained, “I started CodeREV to answer the question so many students have: ‘Why? Why should I learn math, science, or engineering?’ In our project-based classes and curriculum, students automatically answer these questions for themselves, since they need to learn these topic areas to create the fun and amazing projects they build and code in camp.” CodeREV offers a variety of classes for kids ages 6 to 14 to appeal to all technology-based interests. Its MathCraft program uses the popular video game Minecraft to teach math, and its Adventures in Programming class covers 3D game design. Its most popular option, Minecraft Level Design & Engineering, applies STEAM concepts to building amazing contraptions inside Minecraft. With a total of 10 different classes to choose from, there is something for everyone at CodeREV. Evan has been teaching STEAM for 17 years, has created education software, and has started education technology companies. Evan’s partner, Chief Education Innovation Officer John Stuppy, Ph.D., holds a Master’s degree in Education Technology from Stanford, a Ph.D. in Education Reform from UCLA, and has been teaching and creating curriculum for coding aligned with math for three decades. Evan and John believe that their combined 50 years of experience, coupled with the most innovative teaching approaches in technology, are critical to bringing coding into mainstream education, and to get students excited about using math and science. OUTPOST SUMMER CAMPS
N
ow more than ever, children need to be away from their devices for extended periods of time, and there is nothing better than a summer day camp experience to make this a reality. Outpost Summer Camps was founded in 2001 and serves over 1,500 children every summer, completely outdoors and screen-free. The Outpost experience has three pillars that parents have loved for over 15 summers: “old-fashioned” camp activities (think MUD!), door-to-door transportation for most families, and exceptional, well-trained staff that ensure a quality experience for each child. Outpost is open to children ages 3 to 14, and according to Owner/Director Stuart Jones, “Each of our camps has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” The three-week sessions are what make Outpost so unique. Stuart explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” Another way the camps stand out is with their commitment to safety. Outpost Summer Camps has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association since inception and operates under permit from the County of San Diego as an Organized Camp. Stuart and his wife Kelly, a clinical psychologist, bring years of child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested 8 to 10 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. Colossus Painting Provides Its Customers With a Better Product for an Affordable Price
rior to starting Colossus Painting, Joshua Berner sold paint to contractors, using his expertise to teach them how to resolve issues and specify which types of paint would work best for a given project. It wasn’t long before Joshua decided to use his knowledge of the painting industry to start his own painting company and, in 2008, Colossus Painting was born. “I wanted to create a company that could serve customers much better and provide a better product for an affordable price,” Joshua explained. Today, Colossus Painting has made Joshua’s dream a reality by providing interior and exterior painting of homes and businesses, while also offering repair of stucco, drywall, and wood. “Colossus is unique in its approach to a project,” stated Joshua. “We tailor your job to the best system or options of systems for your home. This differs from a lot of other companies in the area.” Color retention is a big issue with exterior paint jobs here in San Diego as well as washability and durability they contend with on interior jobs. Colossus has solutions for this. “Our feeling is when your job is complete, it should stand out in appearance and longevity compared to those painted by someone else,” Joshua added. It’s important to note that a little paint can go a long way in changing the appearance of a home. “People forget about paint,” said Joshua. “It is a great way to make your home look great in a relatively short amount of time. We paint and stain a lot of cabinets, front doors, and garage doors.” From the beginning, the team at Colossus Painting has made an effort to give back. “We have helped a lot of schools and people,” explained Joshua. “We’ve painted homes for free. It’s a joy for us and our workers as much as it is for the homeowner who is having a difficult life situation.” Joshua is proud of his family-oriented, friendly, and professional staff. “I believe that when someone hires us, they realize they are dealing with a knowledgeable and professional company and will receive a great paint job,” shared Joshua. “We help the customer through the process and can get them the right tools to make their job successful.” 44 • 92024MAGAZINE.COM • April | May 2019
