little over a year ago, I wrote about how our kids were taking music lessons and having fun learning to play and sing various popular songs. They are now into music more than ever before, and a lot has happened in a year. In case you are hearing about this for the first time, Peyton plays guitar and sings. Audrey plays drums and piano, but she insists that drums are her number one. The two of them have come a long way over the last year. For starters, they formed a band and decided to officially name their two-person “brother and sister” duo Call Me Breaux. When we discussed their name choice, both Audrey and Peyton explained that people have called them by their last name (pronounced “bro”) their entire life – especially in sports – so it just makes sense for a band name. When my wife and I realized how much they liked singing and performing, we started to gradually convert our dining room into a small music studio. On any given day, you can often hear some type of music being performed by one or both of them. And every once in a while, something magical happens when they come together and play their growing set of songs. It’s fun to be preparing dinner and hear your kids jamming out in the other room. Who needs a radio when you can get live performances inside your house daily? And although they love to play music for the pure sense of accomplishment, now they’ve experienced the thrill of performing live on stage. Last month, they were invited to play a set at the world-famous Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood. A couple of weeks later, they played the House of Blues in San Diego. This was particularly special for them because quite a few of their friends were at the show. They made it clear to me that having their friends in the audience was the coolest thing ever! It’s a pretty crazy thing to stand in the audience and watch your kids (ages 13 and 12) get up on stage in front of a crowd. As a parent, I experience a wide range of emotions. I’m nervous for them. I’m proud of them. And I’m amazed at their determination and willingness to put themselves out there. So far, they’ve only played cover songs. But recently, they have decided that writing and producing their own original songs is where they want to go. They said that it would be awesome to hear their songs playing on the radio one day, so now they are more determined than ever to make this happen. A special thank you to The Fine Tune Academy for continuing to teach music theory to our kids, to Studio West for providing a great local professional recording atmosphere, and to family and friends (you know who you are) that offer amazing support for their music journey. Be sure to check out their next performance at the House of Blues in San Diego on March 31. A limited number of discounted tickets are available. Email hello@callmebreaux.com for more information.

Bennet Berlin Wins Citizenship Award from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society by LINDA FRABL | photo by Soul of Photography

B

ennet Berlin, a senior at the Grauer School in Encinitas, recently earned the Citizenship Award for Leadership and scholarship money from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) for raising more than $16,000 for the organization. Bennet’s fundraising efforts were prompted by her involvement with the Student of the Year Campaign, a seven-week long competition to raise money for LLS. Describing the LLS fundraising experience, Bennet said, “My team was made up of seven of my classmates who were also interested in community service. Our main strategy was to create connections between LLS and Grauer, and to use those connections to inform more people about the organization and its mission. It was motivating to know that the work I did and the money I raised was all going toward such an important cause.” It was because of a school presentation from the LLS campaign manager that Bennet became interested in lending a hand. Even though she had always participated in community service opportunities, such as tutoring first graders at Capri Elementary

through her school’s Study Buddies program, Bennet realized, “Once I reached my junior year I had more time in my schedule, so I wanted to get involved with something bigger. I was inspired when the campaign manager described LLS’s goals of raising awareness, curing blood cancer, and ensuring access to treatments for patients.” At Grauer, Bennet’s favorite subject is physics because “the class is challenging but entertaining, and I find myself learning something new about how the world works every time.” Though she’s not sure yet which college she’ll attend, Bennet plans to study neuroscience and linguistics, and she hopes to earn a PhD in those areas. Bennet added, “I’ve also always loved film but I’ve never been able to take an actual class on it, so I plan to take film classes in college and pursue that more seriously.” In her downtime, Bennet enjoys hiking and visiting local eateries. As much as she loves her beachy hometown, Bennet revealed, “I’m excited to live in a different part of the country when I go to college!” This go-getter is sure to make a positive difference no matter where she goes.¢

ENCINITAS RESIDENT COMPLETES MARATHON GRAND SLAM

F

or several years we’ve followed the journey of Encinitas resident Vivian Lee as she worked towards her goal of completing the Marathon Grand Slam, running a marathon on each of the seven continents plus the North Pole. She achieved this milestone in November of last year when she finished the Antarctic Ice Marathon, becoming one of just 21 female members – and 104 total members – inducted in the Marathon Grand Slam Club. She is the first Chinese-American person and the third American woman to join the club. The Antarctic Ice Marathon is the southernmost marathon in the world and extreme in nature – runners faced temperatures of -13 degrees Fahrenheit and strong headwinds on race day, keeping every inch of their bodies covered to prevent frostbite and snow blindness. Vivian faced opposite extremes last April when she ran the Marathon des Sables in 120-degree heat in the Sahara Desert. She has completed marathons in San Diego, Chicago, Australia, the North Pole, Greece, Thailand, Morocco, and Peru. “The journey over the past 20 months was so incredible that it completely changed me,” Vivian said. “The harder the race, the more I got to know myself.” Vivian is now focusing on training for ultra races, which are longer in distance than a marathon. Her next goal is to qualify and compete in the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc in Chamonix, France next year, a 103-mile

course across three countries and 400 summits. These kinds of races are smaller, and allow her the opportunity to get to know her fellow runners. “When we conquer the same hardship and suffering on the course,” Vivian explained, “we surely form strong bonds.” No matter which course Vivian runs next, the Encinitas community is cheering her on! ¢

MEET THE GREENS This Family of Four Loves Life in Encinitas by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photos by Soul of Photography

F

ourteen years ago marked the beginning of the Green family’s story. Nicole and Peter met at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, where they were both attending a B-Side Players concert. A marriage, two kids, and a dog later, the Green family is now happily settled into their beloved neighborhood in Encinitas. “We love Encinitas and are truly grateful to live in such a wonderful community,” said the family, who moved to 92024 from Carmel Valley in 2010. “We have great neighbors, are walking distance to parks, trails, and shops, and we enjoy raising our kids in a beach community.” The Green children, Sofia and Jackson, both attend El Camino Creek Elementary School, are very involved in community activities, and are “always up for an adventure,” described Nicole. “Jackson has been on the move since he learned to walk.” Jackson plays for the Encinitas Little League and Express Soccer league. He enjoys fishing, surf casting, BMX bikes, Adventure Guides, and skateboarding at Encinitas Community Park. Sofia plays softball and soccer, enjoys horseback riding, math, art, and Adventure Princesses. “Sofia is a real go-getter with a big heart,” shared Nicole. Peter, originally from Ohio, attended Cal State San Marcos for his MBA degree and currently works at AMN Healthcare in Carmel Valley, managing the company’s paid digital marketing and email efforts. “AMN is a

great company to work for and he is able to ride his bike to work along the coast which is awesome!” said Nicole. Nicole, a San Diego native, studied at University of Oregon before obtaining a teaching credential from Cal State San Marcos. This spring, Nicole is graduating from the University of San Diego with a master’s degree in nonprofit leadership and management after attending night classes for three years. She is currently the executive director for Casa de Amistad, a local nonprofit group that provides after-school mentoring and tutoring programs to low-income, underserved youth. “Casa recruits community volunteers, partners with the Magdalena Ecke YMCA, and other nonprofit organizations, and provides free music instruction to students through a partnership with the San Diego Youth Symphony,” described Nicole. “Over 230 students are mentored by 220 volunteers on a weekly basis.” In their down time, the Green family enjoys going to the beach, camping, taking road trips, and staying active in the community. They are members of Solana Beach Presbyterian Church and also fundraise for the YMCA Dreamcatcher for YMCA Adventure Guides. She added, “Sofia and Jackson have grown up helping at Casa de Amistad and are learning the importance of giving back to the community.”¢

In the Creative Zone DD Garth Spreads the Joy of the Creative Process Through Dabble Artwork Events by LIZ ONUFER | photos by Soul of Photography

S

preading her message to create without worry, DD Garth is on a mission to encourage people to exercise their creative muscles. She goes by her artist name D4bblz, pronounced “Dabbles,” hoping to inspire others to try dabbling in art. An Encinitas resident and selftaught artist, DD realized that people shut themselves off from their creative potential. So, she started Dabble events in her backyard. The events combine an art show, a lineup of DJs, and an art cart that includes supplies from coloring books to acrylics. “The music encourages a relaxed environment and loosens up the unnecessary creative tension,” DD explained. “The guests are encouraged to use whatever they want from the cart. They could sit up front next to the DJ booth and get comfortable while they draw, or they can stay back and use an easel and a canvas to create a masterpiece.” DD will soon be expanding her Dabble events to local bars, cafes, and other art studios. Her big goal is to open Dabble Art Gym, a fully stocked art studio space for people to rent, as well as host classes and events. “It would be similar to a normal gym in the sense that it would have available tools that allow you to become stronger,” DD explained.

“In this case the tools are the art supplies, and you are strengthening your artistic techniques.” She wants people to experience the enjoyment and fall in love with the creative process. “It’s an indescribable feeling when you get ‘in the zone.’ It really comforts the soul.” DD’s other passion is animals. She graduated from UCLA in 2014 with a degree in environmental science, with the goal of becoming a veterinarian. While she is no longer pursuing veterinary school, DD still gets her animal fix working as a veterinary assistant and pet sitter. Balancing her work schedule with her art is a challenge and another inspiration for Dabble Art Gym. One of DD’s greatest challenges is making the time to sit down to paint and have all the supplies available. “I want people to not have to plan anything out and just have all the art supplies they need ready for them,” she said. “There shouldn’t be any challenges when it comes to dabbling.” She’s happy with where dabbling has taken her thus far. “I honestly am loving my life,” DD acknowledged. “I get to enjoy my first passion and work with animals every day, and pursue my new passions of dabbling and getting people to create with me.”¢

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER

Committed to Positive Change Barrett Smith Lives by the Rotary Motto “Service Above Self” by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

arrett Smith didn’t waste any time getting involved in his new community after relocating from Texas just two years ago. He joined the Del Mar Rotary Club soon after arriving, and “a whole new world of service opportunities opened up to me,” he said. Today, Barrett serves as the chair of the Rotary Community Service Committee. “We work with homeless veterans, charter schools, lifeguards, food banks, substance abuse organizations, and a host of other charities around the county with at least one major service project undertaken every month,” Barrett explained. About a year ago, he also connected with the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito. “I had a great childhood growing up in Austin but always saw the need among kids in the community who didn’t have as much as I did,” Barrett explained. “When I made the move to San Diego, I saw the need all over and knew from friends and mentors what an incredible job Boys & Girls Clubs do for kids who need opportunity.” What began as a couple afternoons a week volunteering with teens quickly became a much larger commitment. Barret now helps with fundraising and community outreach and serves on the Junior Board. “I feel strongly that the kids at these clubhouses have limitless potential and will be the leaders of the next generation,” he shared. “They need someone to ensure they know how great they are.” Professionally, Barrett has served as a realtor for Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty for the last year. Although he had careers in starting companies and other industries, Barrett acknowledged that he always wanted to be a realtor. He also enjoys spending time with family, playing golf and racquetball, and traveling. His newest hobby is pyrotechnics. “Since I was a small child I’ve been fascinated with fireworks and last year began the process of becoming a licensed pyrotechnician in the State of California,” he said. Barrett’s commitment to “service above self” is inspired and supported by those around him. “Everything I have been able to accomplish in the last year has been thanks to an indescribable amount of love and support from the wonderful people of this community,” Barrett acknowledged. “I’d encourage anyone searching to make an impact and see positive change to reach out and get involved in this community,” he recommended. “Your volunteering is wanted and needed to help change lives around you.” 

FROM THE DENTIST

THE SCOOP ON DENTAL SEALANTS FOR KIDS by DR. SPENCER MAUSETH, Encinitas Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics

I

t’s no secret to parents that establishing good brushing and flossing habits with their children is one of the best ways to prevent cavities and maintain good oral health. However, some parents may not know that dental sealants are another valuable tool in fighting cavities, especially in children. Dental sealants are clear or tooth-colored plastic material that is applied to the chewing surfaces or grooves of the back teeth (premolars and molars). These surfaces are where most cavities in children form – it’s not always easy to clean these rough and uneven areas where leftover food particles and cavity-causing bacteria hide. Dental sealants act as a barrier to food, plaque, and acid and protect these decay-prone areas of the teeth. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), sealants have been shown to reduce the

risk of decay in molars by nearly 80%. Although adults can also benefit from dental sealants, the earlier they are applied, the better. Kids get their first molars around age six and second molars typically come in around age 12. Sealing these teeth as soon as they break through can really go a long way to ensuring they are cavity-free from the start. As long as there is no existing cavity in the tooth, sealants are typically recommended for all children. So how are sealants applied? It’s an easy, quick, and painless process! Sealants are placed during a routine office visit by a either a dental hygienist or a dentist. There are three simple steps: 1. Teeth should be properly cleaned and examined to make sure that there are no existing cavities in the teeth to be sealed. 2. The teeth are dried and a cleanser is placed on them. This tooth shampoo cleans the grooves of any biomatter so that a strong bond can be formed between the tooth and the sealant. The gel is rinsed off and the teeth are dried once again.

3. The sealant material is applied to the biting surface (grooves) of the teeth to be sealed. A special light is then placed above the tooth to harden the sealant. Combined with proper brushing, flossing, a healthy diet, and regular dental check-ups, the application of dental sealants is an easy and painfree way to help kids in the fight against cavities. ¢

City Manager Recognized Encinitas City Manager Karen Brust was recently recognized and honored by the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) at its 103rd Annual Conference for her 30 years of service. Karen’s recent efforts at City Hall include reorganizing and establishing the Development Services Department, opening the Parks & Recreation Customer Service Counter, adding service tools such as SeeClickFix, and implementing mobility projects, to name a few. Councilmember Tony Kranz said, “I appreciate all the work that Karen has done for the city and look forward to her continuing to focus on the things that make life better for our residents.” Karen has been in her current role since 2015, and previously served as City Manager for the cities of San Juan Capistrano and Del Mar. Bench Project Serves Hundreds in Mexico Local nonprofit Sustainable Surplus was recently tasked with finding a new home for 150 used bus stop benches from the City of San Diego. The benches, which were headed to Miramar Landfill, are made of difficult-to-recycle and non-decomposing fiberglass material. When no use was found for the benches in San Diego, Sustainable Surplus CEO Sue Prelozni reached out to Adolfo Delgado, Binational Coalition of Nonprofits (BCN) partner and Executive Director of the Comité Binacional Unidos por la Niñez (CBUN) in Mexico. With Adolfo’s help, the benches were refurbished, repurposed, and distributed to several cities throughout Mexico, where they will be used in parks, churches, schools, and community centers. BCN was founded in 2017 to facilitate the handling of donated items that cannot be reused or repurposed locally, resulting in at least 12 cross-border donations in the past year. Pacific Ridge Students Give Back

The Pacific Ridge School Boys’ Varsity Basketball team, consisting of students from Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Rancho Santa Fe, took part in their annual holiday meal delivery to La Posada de Guadalupe, a shelter for homeless men and farm workers, in January. The team arrived to the shelter for the fourth time with trays full of food, and got to talk with the men there to learn more about their backgrounds. “The boys jumped right into it,” said Basketball Coach Chris Burman. “It’s a way for them to see that they can have a positive impact locally, right here within our community.” The team also traveled to Tijuana over the summer to host a basketball clinic in an underserved community there, where they taught basic basketball skills to over 30 children and played friendly scrimmages against local basketball clubs. Community service is built into the curriculum at Pacific Ridge, giving students the opportunity to work on causes they are passionate about. Learn more at www.pacificridge.org.

5K Paw Walk in the Garden Nearly 500 people attended the 6th Annual 5K Paw Walk in the Garden in February, hosted by Rancho Coastal Humane Society (RCHS) and the San Diego Botanic Garden (SDBG). The event featured a scenic 3.1-mile course through the garden for dogs and their owners, as well as pet products, treats, animalrelated information and displays, and the popular peanut butter/cream cheese challenge. “The 5K Paw Walk in the Garden has grown so much and so fast,” said Sam Beukema, SDBG Education and Events Manager. “It’s the walk that every dog is begging to go on. Dogs love it. They get excited just driving past the entrance to the garden.” The Paw Walk is the only day of the year when dogs are allowed into the garden. The event raised approximately $25,000 for RCHS and SDBG. Nancy Hinsch was the top individual fundraiser and Team Drake was the top team fundraiser. For more information visit www.5kpawwalk.org.

SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

CARLSBAD ART FARM

C

arlsbad Art Farm is a small visual arts school tucked away on a beautiful stream-side woodland property in coastal North County. Art Farm’s camps for grades 2–8 are designed to inspire a deep connection to animals and the natural world through traditional studio art education. Winner of the “Most Awesome Camp for Kids in SoCal” award for the past three years, Art Farm’s unique blend of outstanding art instruction in the woods with a menagerie of farm animals has enchanted local students and families for the past 14 years. While this is an arts camp, kids don’t sit down all day. Instruction takes place at a variety of outdoors locations, inside the Imaginarium Print Studio, in the barn, and down by the creek. They keep it moving! Campers are assigned to one of three base camps based on grade level. Students learn how to sketch live animals, draw in charcoal, develop paintings, work a monotype printing press, and design paper boats for the popular Friday Boat Pageant and Creek Race. Three hours daily are dedicated art classes. The balance of time is spent with staff exploring the local habitat, hanging out with the animals, enjoying lunch, and making new friends. Each week ends with the All Camp Art Show, to which family and friends are invited. Camp sessions begin June 18 and are held Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Camp is extended to 4 p.m. Fridays only for the student art show. RSF ATTACK SOCCER

R

SF Attack Soccer offers camps for both recreational and competitive players during the summer in Rancho Santa Fe. The recreational camps are designed for players who want to have fun while working on their technical ability and improving their skills. The camps run for five days in the mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and are offered in June and August. On a typical day, the campers will participate in a group warm-up and then break into their age and skill-appropriate groups for the rest of the morning. The camps maintain a small coach-to-camper ratio so that RSF Attack coaches are able to interact personally with each camper, better providing them with skill development. All campers receive a customized ball and t-shirt. Attack Player Development Camps have been designed for ambitious players who are committed in their development to the dynamic ball-possession style of the modern game. The themes throughout the week include improving ball mastery, possession with purpose to attack, creativity in the final third, goal scoring, defensive intensity, and maintaining a composed but aggressive mindset. The player will leave the camp with enhanced fundamental technique and improved game intelligence, and will be inspired to play with greater confidence. Campers should come ready to work with like-minded, high-level players and a desire to improve their game. These camps run for four days, typically in the morning from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. All Attack camps are conducted by Director of Coaching Malcolm Tovey and the Attack professional staff of coaches. A Look at 92024’s Real Estate Numbers by JESSICA BREAUX

T

he figures are in for January, and the numbers remain quite strong for home sales in 92024. A quick comparison to the same time period last year shows some minor fluctuations. 92024 held steady with new listings in January with a total of 58 new single family home listings hitting the market, compared to 53 new listings in January 2017 (an increase of 9%). However, the total inventory of single family homes for sale was down 37% with 51 homes available for purchase (versus 81 during the same period last year). The average number of days that homes were on the market during January was 44 days (compared to 57 days in January 2017). The

22% faster selling time is consistent with the drop in inventory supply. Although we see some flattening out, home values are very strong (and continue to be at or near an all-time high). The median sales price of a 92024 single family home during the month of January was $1,180,000 (an increase of 2.2% compared to last January’s $1,155,000 median price). If you are considering making a move, you should be able to do so with confidence. Give me a call to schedule a meeting. It’s important to work with someone that you trust, and I would love the opportunity to get to know you and discuss your real estate goals. ¢
