About Last Night
T
Derrick Breaux Publisher
here’s nothing quite like a good party. It is often the end result of a lot of work and preparation. The reward. A gathering of friends, business associates, family, coworkers – many people coming together that share something in common. As I write this issue’s note, I find myself with a little extra hop in my step and a smile on my face. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that today is a Friday – and the end of a long and productive week. But what’s really on my mind is last night’s ZCode Magazines’ epic party! With the launch of our eleventh publication, 08/10 Magazine, covering the North Carlsbad zip codes of 92008 and 92010, we decided to make the official announcement with a grand celebration – ZCode style. And we felt that the iconic Carlsbad Flower Fields was the perfect venue – the Paul Ecke Jr. Family Barn made for a very cool setting. So why was last night’s party so great? Was it the fact that we were blessed to have over 300 guests ranging from local business owners, politicians, and school officials to friends and family members of the ZCode team? You bet it was! Last night was not only a night to celebrate the launch of 08/10 Magazine, but it was a celebration of community in general. You see, it is my belief that most of the people that live in North San Diego County live here by choice and not necessity. The vast majority of our neighbors are proud to live in their community. In fact, they love living in their community. It is this bond that makes everything work. It is this bond that makes each of the unique communities of North County so special. I am surrounded by an incredible group of people that make up the ZCode Team. Day in and day out they are in the office busting their butts and working hard to create magazines that we hope people want to read. Everyone has a unique part of the puzzle. It was an amazing experience to see our team mingling and socializing with many of the people that have either been featured in one of the ZCode Magazines or people that are loyal readers of the magazines. Having the ability for the team to connect faces with names, laugh and socialize make it all worth it. There are many moving parts to publishing hyper-local community magazines. First and foremost, it takes the vision, determination, and desire to produce a great product. For that, I would like to give a heartfelt “thank you” to the ZCode crew. Of equal importance is the loyalty of the local residents and advertisers – both of which ZCode Magazines would not exist without. We all need to thank them. So last night we celebrated. We celebrated you. We celebrated community. We celebrated family, friends, and coworkers. We celebrated being the best that we all can be. We celebrated an incredible journey that I like to call PASSION. I want to thank you for being a loyal reader. And thanks for supporting ZCode Magazines and supporting the advertisers that are responsible for delivering this magazine to your mailboxes. Regards, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

PRESENTING MATTHEW HERRERA AS YOUTH OF THE YEAR
T
he Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego (BGCSD) help thousands of kids each year by providing fun and safe afterschool activities and camps for all ages. Out of those thousands, there are always a few who shine just above the rest. The Sulpizio Family Branch, located in Poway, is proud to present their Youth of the Year in Matthew “Matt” Herrera. Many students can confirm their struggle with school and grades, and Matt was no exception. After a rocky start with grades, he pulled them up to receive straight A’s for the school year. “Matt told us he is grateful for our Youth Leader Sean who always encouraged him to get good grades and participate in sports,” said Katie Khasim, Supervisor of the BGCSD Sulpizio Family Branch. “He told us Sean taught him how to play lacrosse and how to be healthy.” Katie explained that Matt was chosen as the Youth of the Year because he displayed good grades and good character values. Matt’s favorite subject in school is math, because he says it comes easy to him. This will assuredly come in handy when he’s older, as Matt wants to pursue a vocation in the medical field. Matt said that he “wants other kids to know that the Boys & Girls Club is a great place for kids to go. It is fun and you get to learn a lot of things you never would have the chance to do.” To find out more about how your child can join the BGCSD Sulpizio Family Branch head to www.sdyouth.org and click on Sulpizio Family Branch under the Locations tab. ¢

he Poway Unified School District (PUSD) Foundation held its 7th Annual Partners in Education Golf Classic this past April at the Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Resort and Spa. A reception, dinner, and silent and live auction immediately followed the round of golf. A total of eighty golfers attended this event which raised over $50,000 for students and programs in PUSD. Both PUSD Superintendent John Collins and PUSD Foundation President Fred Pierce attended the event along with local business and community leaders. Fred Pierce said, “Our annual golf classic is the primary fundraiser for the PUSD Foundation. It provides a forum for community leaders to get together to network and to support a great cause – our students are the future of our community.” ¢

MAXIMUM FITNESS Poway Engineer Steve Gilbert “Engineers” New Fitness Program for San Diegans by KELLEY GUSICH | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography
R
oosters in the morning: When San Diego-born Steve Gilbert’s family moved into Poway the summer before his 7th grade year, hearing roosters in the morning came as a bit of a shock. “It’s the best thing that ever happened, though; I have so many great friends from Poway High that I still keep in touch with and I really enjoyed Twin Peaks Middle School and Poway High.” He and his wife never really intended to come back to Poway, but after much searching in many areas of San Diego, they decided a country feel with city amenities was the perfect combination. Steve attended the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT, with a major in civil engineering. He then served his country for the next five years, and after going back to school to get his Master of Engineering, returned to San Diego. His major passion is and always has been working out: “I can remember as a small child standing in front of a mirror in the hallway with a chair and trying to come up with different ways to balance and do push-ups and sit-ups, so creating workouts has always seemed fun to me.” The difficulty came in balancing long work hours and family time with exercise. He talked with wife Rebecca about making a video series built for busy people like them. “She was a little nervous about it,” he recalled, “but she supported me so we went for it.” That’s how Steve's new pursuit, Gmax35, was born. Through his new business, he created a series of workout videos with aerobics, weight-training, and yoga techniques to help better his body and work ethic. A background in coaching contributed to Steve’s decision to fulfill this goal. When he was still at the Academy, he coached a high school tournament team, and coached basketball for two years during his military service. Regular hikes up Twin Peaks Mountain and trips to Bikram Yoga helped as well. “I want to encourage people to make fitness a priority in their lives,” Steve said. “It is too easy to get caught up in the stress of work, e-mail and cell phones of today’s world and not make the time to work out.” The new, healthier Steve Gilbert is enjoying his life to the maximum! ¢

Support Charlie Denny
HELP LOCAL POWAY STUDENT BEAT BRAIN CANCER
L
ike many other 14-year-old boys, Charlie Denny is an avid sports fan and very active boy with his sister and two older brothers. He’s been playing competitive soccer since he was 5 and also loves to golf, snowboard, and skateboard. With a love for the outdoors and for music, Charlie and the Denny family are well known for their even bigger passion for soccer, religiously watching the English Premier League on TV. But things have taken a turn for the difficult for the Denny family, as Charlie was diagnosed this past March with Medulloblastoma, a malignant brain tumor. After emergency brain surgery and ten days in the hospital, Charlie kept a bright, positive attitude through his stay. Charlie is currently undergoing radiation five days a week for the next few weeks and will begin chemotherapy soon after that. Despite the burdens and hardship of his condition, Charlie has remained undeterred, uncomplaining, and stayed positive throughout this whole experience. “He has constant doctor’s appointments and just gets through each day at a time,” his mother, Ann Denny, shared. To help the family, the staff and students at Twin Peaks Middle School have organized a meal train, delivering ready-made meals to the family daily. Ann expressed that she has had to quit her job to take care of Charlie and that her husband is out on disability after a knee replacement. In this difficult time, they are reaching out to the Poway community, which they have called home since 1993. Visit www.youcaring.com/medical-fundraiser/helpcharlie-our-13-year-old-son-fight-brain-cancer/163010 to donate, share his story through social media, and leave encouragement for the family. ¢

lex Kim is on his game. The Poway High School rising senior plays competitive club and high school soccer. He is co-captain of his club’s soccer team and was part of this year’s undefeated Palomar League Championship team. “I’ve got a ridiculous amount of [soccer] paraphernalia ranging from T-shirts to jerseys and jackets,” shared Alex Kim (Futbol Club Barcelona is his favorite professional soccer team). He’d also like to travel to Barcelona and experience a game in the renowned Camp Nou soccer stadium. He kicks the ball to others. He volunteers for TOPSoccer, where kids with cognitive and physical disabilities come together and play soccer. He’s active with Poway Junior Vaqueros, a club program designed to enhance in youth the skills to be a successful soccer player. He serves a week each summer as a camp counselor at a Christian youth camp in Vista. “These programs combine my love of soccer with my desire to help people, as well as the enjoyment I get out of working with kids,” reflected Alex.

Off the field, he has academic pinpoint focus. He has placed in the National Honor Society, a National Merit Scholarship finalist, and the UT San Diego All-Academic Team. In fact, Alex has the highest GPA on his high school soccer team. He also co-founded the school’s Crossfit club. Alex enjoys Poway High School, he says, for its “awesome group of friends and teachers." Human Biology is currently his favorite class. He’s been in speech and debate since his freshman year. “As for my teachers, I’d like to recognize how hard they work for their students,” said Alex. His parents are his biggest inspiration because he recognizes they overcame struggles growing up. “I’m also thankful for all the opportunities they’ve presented me. It’s important not to take those kinds of things for granted,” added Alex. The Kim family has lived in Poway Green Valley for seven years. “I’m basically just your typical California kid,” shared Alex. “I love going to the beach, playing sports, and just kicking it with my friends.” But Alex Kim is more than your average teen. He plans to apply to top tier universities in the state and pursue an MBA. “I think anything can be accomplished if you work hard enough. You have to be confident and get the job done,” said Alex. Score! He’s kicking toward a future of many goals – on and off the soccer field. ¢

:::: YOUR NEIGHBOR’S RECIPE
Ingredients 4 thin cut skinless, boneless chicken breasts Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper All-purpose flour, for dredging 6 tablespoons unsalted butter 5 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1/3 cup fresh lemon juice 1/2 cup low sodium chicken stock 1/4 cup brined capers, rinsed 1 or 2 14-ounce cans quartered artichoke hearts (we like 2, but we really like artichokes) 1/4 cup fresh Italian parsley, chopped (optional)
Directions Season chicken with salt and pepper. Dredge chicken in flour and shake off excess. 2. In large skillet on medium to medium-high heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter with 2 tablespoons olive oil. 3. When butter and oil start to sizzle, add 2 pieces of chicken and cook for 3 minutes. When chicken is browned, flip and cook the other side for about 3 minutes. 4. Remove chicken to a plate. Melt 2 more tablespoons butter and add another 2 tablespoons olive oil. 5. When butter and olive oil start to sizzle, add the remaining 2 pieces of chicken and brown both sides in same manner. Remove pan from heat and move chicken to the plate. 6. Add the lemon juice, stock, capers, and artichoke hearts into the pan. 7. Return pan to the stove and bring to a boil, scraping up brown bits from the pan for extra flavor. Check for seasoning. 8. Return chicken to the pan and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove chicken to a plate. 9. Add remaining 2 tablespoons butter to pan and whisk vigorously. 10. Serve chicken as is, or serve over a bed of angel hair pasta or baby spinach, or both (my husband’s favorite). 11. Pour butter sauce over chicken and garnish with parsley.

Apart from the welcoming neighbors, the Boyers were attracted to the community for its great schools. “We knew that the

Another draw to 92064 was its unique location. “Poway is the best of both worlds; the country and coast. It’s far enough inland and close enough to the beach,” described Niki. “We like that we can walk/ride bikes to pretty much anything in Poway.” And staying active in Poway is something the Boyer family knows a thing or two about. “We love sports, all sports,” shared Niki. “Our kids are heavily involved in Poway youth sports so we spend most of our time at baseball, soccer, cheer, softball, and basketball games. We also love biking, hiking, geocaching, and of course we are avid beach goers.” Both Russ and Niki stay very involved in the kids’ activities. Niki volunteers in the classroom at Midland Elementary School and has coordinated the last four school auctions. And when Russ isn’t working his day job as a CPA, he participates in the Midland Dad’s Club. “Russ is also an assistant baseball coach to Gavin’s team,” added Niki. With such a busy lifestyle, the Boyers don’t have much down time, but when they do, they like to take it easy. “If there’s ever a day without sports,” said Niki, “you will often find us at home napping!” ¢

Keeping the community’s teeth healthy and functional for a lifetime is the mission of Carmel Plaza Orthodontics. Many may not realize that orthodontics goes far beyond straightening crooked teeth. Crowded teeth, which can be difficult to clean, increases the chances of cavities, and misaligned teeth create a non-functional bite,

causing greater wear and tear. Gum tissue can also be negatively impacted by poorly aligned teeth. Dr. Rafail, owner of Carmel Plaza Orthodontics, shared his motivation for opening the shop: “To provide the best orthodontic treatment to our patients, to respect their desire for better health and self-improvement, and to be ethically and morally professional in all of our practice.” This motivation culminates in an experience of “exceptional treatment with unconditional care, kindness, and respect,” stated the practice’s orthodontist, Dr. Kim. Braces, commonly associated with the
teenage years, have proven to pay off for all ages. In fact, 40% of their patients are between the ages of 18 and 70. “We believe orthodontic treatment should be available to everyone,” acknowledged Dr. Kim. The initial consultation is free, and the team is sensitive to work with every patient’s budget. The design of their office and treatments are critical elements of meeting their mission. The convenient location, the sports themed office, and the latest technology ensure the best quality of care. And the team is an integral part of this equation. Dr. Rafail has been in private practice in San Diego since 1990. Dr.

hile lacrosse is traditionally seen as a pastime on the East Coast, the sport has seen an explosion of attention here in Poway and up the West Coast. With its high speed and explosive play, lacrosse games are thrilling to watch and intense to participate in, especially when the players are our young talented Poway High School girls lacrosse team. At the time of print, the team was preparing for the CIF playoffs, which ran through mid-May. We talk with Varsity Head Coach Sarah Spillett about the sport, the challenges of being a student athlete and what to expect out of our Titans.

Q&A
with Poway High School Head Girls Lacrosse Coach Sarah Spillett
What is the history behind your career as an athlete and as a coach? Sports have been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up in Syracuse, NY, where lacrosse is extremely popular. My father played his entire life and was a coach for both the girls and boys high school programs where we lived. He instilled the passion for the game in me from a young age. As I got older that passion continued to grow, as did my dedication to both volleyball and lacrosse. After graduating high school, I played lacrosse for four years at the University at Albany. Shortly after graduation, I moved to San Diego, where I became involved in Poway Lacrosse almost immediately.
How long have you been the head coach, and what enticed you to want to coach? This current season is my sixth season as the Poway varsity head coach. I have always known that I would want to coach and give back to the sport. Lacrosse has molded me into the person I am today, and I have a passion for creating those same experiences and opportunities for my players. I hope to inspire them to not only learn the game, but the life lessons that come along with being a part of something greater than yourself.
How have the girls done this season? Overall the girls have done great this season. We are currently waiting to get our ranking for CIF Playoffs. We finished our regular season games in early May, and placed second in the Palomar League. We competed in the Open Division, and went to playoffs in May as well. Like any season, this year has had its ups and downs. Some of the highlights included our wins against Torrey Pines, Coronado, Westview and Rancho Bernardo. These are all really strong rivalries for us and it was exciting to see the girls come out on top in those games.
What was the number one goal that the girls upheld this year? One of the number one goals this season my girls upheld was perseverance. Every year we are faced with new challenges, and we wanted to focus on never giving up regardless of the circumstances. One of the aspects of my program we pride ourselves on is playing with heart. We have a passionate group of girls who have really come together at the end of this season to play for each other and never give up. I am always so proud when I see them play all the way down to the last whistle, and have that pay off.

What is the most rewarding aspect about coaching? The most challenging? There are so many rewarding aspects about coaching it is hard to narrow it down. I would say the most rewarding is seeing the growth from the beginning of the season to the end of the season. You see the girls push themselves day in and day out in practices, which eventually translates to on-field successes. There is nothing like seeing my players accomplish their goals. I would say the most challenging is facing obstacles that are out of your control. For example, when a player becomes injured during the season. It is so hard to see a player who you know works so hard and then get sidelined for any period of time. Although challenging, you just have to stay positive and focused on healing.
What is your coaching philosophy and how do you instill that upon the girls? My coaching philosophy is to foster a positive environment that encourages teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership among my student athletes. I believe my program should encourage student athletes to reach their full potential and be successful both on and off the field. I believe in always making sure we have a “team first” mentality. Lastly, I expect my athletes to uphold the philosophy of Pursuing Victory with Honor by demonstrating caring, citizenship, fairness, respect, responsibility, and trustworthiness. As a coaching staff, we model this with each practice and game.

here’s a new sheriff in town! The Poway branch of the San Diego Sheriff’s Department is pleased to welcome Jeff Maxin to the force, newly appointed as the captain of the Poway Sheriff’s Station. Jeff’s new responsibilities include covering all areas that the Poway Station oversees such as patrol, traffic and investigations. On top of those duties, he is also the captain of the Ramona SubStation and the Rural Division of the department. He is supported by his many experiences throughout his law enforcement career, including assignments at the Encinitas Sheriff’s Station from patrol deputy to detective. In 2007, Jeff was promoted to sheriff’s sergeant for the Court Services Field Division at the Vista and Lemon Grove branches. After a stint as lieutenant in the San Marcos Station, Jeff was promoted to the position he now holds. Jeff was born and bred in San Diego ever since his family moved here in the ‘50s. He was already no stranger to Poway before his promotion. As a North County resident, Jeff revealed that he and his family have enjoyed coming to the city for the past twenty-five years, frequenting the Original Pancake House, Old Poway Park, and taking to the trails on Iron Mountain. He expressed that he is eager to be working in Poway. “I have good friends that live and work in the city of Poway. It is a fantastic command and I feel very excited and fortunate to be assigned to Poway Station,” said Jeff. ¢

What causes oral cancer? What causes oral cancer? Scientists aren’t sure of the exact cause. While smoking and tobacco use are still major risk factors, the fastest growing segment of oral cancer patients is young, healthy, nonsmoking individuals due to the connection to the HPV virus. We cannot stop this virus from spreading. In fact if not diagnosed and treated in its early stages, oral cancer can spread, leading to chronic pain, loss of oral function, irreparable facial and oral disfigurement following surgery, and even death. For this reason, it’s important to regularly visit your dentist so he or she can perform a thorough screening for oral cancer. How do dentists screen for cancer? Your dentist will screen for oral cancer during routine checkups. During the screening, he or she will feel for lumps or irregular tissue changes in your neck, head, cheeks, and oral cavity and will thoroughly examine the soft tissues in your mouth, specifically looking for sores or discolored tissues.

STRAWBERRY SERENADE Sweet Fun in the Sun by JESSICA WOODS | photos by Tyler McElhaney
S
trawberry season is here! This beloved red fruit is a favorite among San Diegans, served on plates and in recipes new and old. But for every recipe, you’ll want fresh strawberries to serve, and it doesn’t get much “fresher” than handpicked strawberries straight from the field. This season, grab your friends and family and head to one of San Diego’s strawberry farms, where you can pick as many berries as your strawberry heart desires. Driving north on the I-5, it’s hard to miss the vast strawberry field nestled in the hills of Carlsbad off Cannon Rd. This is home to The Carlsbad Strawberry Company, who invite groups as small as a couple to as large as school groups and organizations to come pick strawberries for themselves. Venture into the field with your friends and family for a lovely summer getaway. With groups of fifteen or more, they recommend you call ahead at 760-603-9608 for more information. The fields are open Monday through Friday, and picking is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit their website for farm stand locations and directions at www.carlsbadstrawberrycompany.com. Out east in Temecula is Kenny’s Strawberry Farm, where their strawberries are grown hydroponically. There’s no need to worry about dirt or mud, as the strawberries are elevated above the ground to where even small children can reach. The farm is open Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and you can visit their website to keep up-to-date with crop conditions at www.temeculavalleystrawberryfarms.com. ¢

A MUSICAL PRESENCE Cael Dadian Embodies San Diego’s Smooth, Soulful Vibrancy by LINDA FRABL | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography
W
hen we imagine a musician who portrays the gritty realism of Detroit, we think of rapper Eminem. When we imagine a musician who exemplifies the magical jazzy sound of New Orleans, we think of Doctor John. And when we imagine a musician who embodies the smooth and soulful vibrancy of San Diego, we’ll soon think of 17-year-old Poway resident, Cael Dadian. He proclaimed, “The culture really shaped me as a person and the music I make.” When Cael was just 8 years old, he was inspired to take up the guitar after watching actor Drake Bell’s guitar playing on the TV series, “Drake and Josh.” Cael then taught himself the piano at age 11, the drums at 12, and took singing seriously at age 13. By age 14 Cael was producing his own instrumentals and beats, utilizing rock, blues, soul, pop, R&B and hip-hop. Now Cael is a bona-fide musician, having performed his biggest gig in front of a thousand people at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles. But he’s still hungry for more. Cael explained, “In five years I want to be a household name and be that presence. Right now the world doesn't know they need me so I have to show them they do.” But he’s not just in it for the fame and the glory. Cael also wants to affect others Name: Cael Dadian (17) in an inspirational way. He admitted, “I plan Community: Poway on using my music career for things bigger School: La Jolla Country Day School than music. Most celebrities take for granted Grade: 11 that the simplest hellos, words of advice, and Parents: Curtis and Ayda Dadian public image can really do good for people Siblings: Cela (12), Lacey (9) and help progress our culture for the positive.” Website: www.caeldadian.com In the meantime, Cael will be a senior this fall at the academically-rigorous La Jolla Country Day School, but he’ll relax by “chilling with friends, doing stupid stuff in public and making videos out of it, playing tennis, running, and going to shows on school nights,” he chuckled. He’ll also continue to hone in on his musical goals. Cael revealed, “I have hundreds of hip-hop beats that I haven't personally used, but I could see so many different types of rappers or singers on them. I could also make radio pop records all day, but I’m really trying to do something else. I don't know what exactly that is, but every song is one step closer.” ¢

The Big 5-0
ST. MICHAEL’S SCHOOL CELEBRATES FIFTY YEARS
F
ifty years. For some, it’s a milestone birthday they dread seeing. For others, it’s a sign of wisdom and age like a fine wine. For St. Michael’s School in 92064, celebrating fifty years of education and service is a major milestone that calls for a big party. This past May, St. Michael’s hosted a fiftieth anniversary mass at their Holy Family Center, surrounded by students, alumni and old friends. “This milestone confirms that the community that welcomed us in 1964 continues to embrace our rich tradition of educating the whole child and our ability to guide our students to grow in faith, knowledge, and character,” said Mrs. Kathleen Mock, Principal of St. Michael’s School. Throughout their fifty year history the school has been headed by only six principals, and what makes St. Michael’s especially unique is that three of their previous principals still maintain a presence at the school to this day. Their current pastor, Monsignor Neal Dolan, is celebrating his fiftieth anniversary in the priesthood, retiring this July, and Father John Dolan (no relation) will take over. When asked what was next for St. Michael’s, Principal Mock elaborated, “As we prepare our graduates to become future leaders, we now also must focus on developing their skills in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math, as well as guiding them to become independent, critical thinkers with strong written and oral communication skills. Over the past fifty years, St. Michael’s alumni have made a positive impact in our community, and we look forward to being a pillar in Poway for another fifty years and beyond.” ¢

Team Spyder Strikes Back
PHS ROBOTICS TEAM GARNERS GREAT ACHEIVEMENTS
R
obots are the wave of the future, and it’s no surprise that students are determined to be behind the next phase in robotics evolution. Poway High School (PHS) hosts a robotics team known as Team Spyder, and they’ve had a great run this school year. Traveling all over the country to showcase their engineering skills, Team Spyder has garnered awards from competitions in Milwaukee, WI, Houston, TX, and Chula Vista. While the school year may be over, the team isn’t done with competitions quite yet. Rodger Dohm, PHS Robotics Lead Advisor, said “We plan to compete at the Del Mar Fair FIRST Robotics Competition in June. We are now gearing up for the next season and our new Poway High School Engineering Academy.” Their strongest element comes from being more creative in hazard protection and showing greater
sportsmanship out of all the other competing teams. In Milwaukee, the team won the Underwriters Laboratories Indutrial Safety Award, which highlights the team “that progresses beyond safety fundamentals by using innovative ways to eliminate or protect against hazards.” Team members Sheldon Boyd and Brian Crotty have received Safety Star of the Day at the FIRST Robotics Competition in Milwaukee, and the VEX Competition in Chula Vista, respectively, as well. Their streak culminated in winning the Motorola Quality Award at the FIRST Robotics Competition in Houston, which is considered the highest engineering design award that could be bestowed. :::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
The Listing Appointment that Changed my Life
In
real estate anything can happen. I am reminded of that everyday. It began a few months ago when I arrived for a meeting with a prospective client. Bonnie, Rick, and Bubba welcomed me into their home, we sat down at the kitchen table, got to know each other and discussed their real estate goals and needs. We set up a plan for the months ahead. Then out of nowhere, Bonnie says, “You know you should take Bubba home with you.” A little stunned at the proposition of taking one of their dogs, I politely declined and let them know I was not ready for that type of commitment. However, Bonnie had planted a seed. In September of last year, two of our dogs went to doggie heaven. It was extraordinarily difficult and, against the better advice of others, I thought it best to take a year to grieve rather than fill the void with a “replacement” dog. About thirty minutes later my seed of opportunity sprouted and as we said our goodbye, I said, “I am going to take you up on your offer.” In the blink of an eye, Bonnie gave a smile and sang out her contagious laugh and Bubba (now Greyson) hopped right up into the car. Real estate is more than a business, it is an opportunity. These opportunities arrive when they are least expected, but it is a matter of recognizing these opportunities.
Greyson found some real estate and we all found love. Bonnie is a volunteer and rehabilitates dogs with Labs and More. If you would like to put a dog up in a new house and your loving home please contact them at www.labsandmore.org. ¢

JIM CROWE WINS MADAME MECHANIC CAR SHOW 2014
J
im Crowe has loved his 1933 Plymouth 5-Window Coupe from its hot rod status through the 1960s and its restoration and modifications in 1999. This past April, this flame bedecked throwback made a spectacular comeback as the winner of the Madame Mechanic Car Show 2014 at the Poway Spring Festival. Winners are chosen through public vote, and the community was entranced by Jim’s hot rod coupe. With three classics in their family, Jim considers himself and his wife Janel to be classic car collectors. “I have been inspired by classic cars since my early childhood,” he said. When asked about the most memorable moment from the Madame Mechanics Car Show, Jim remarked, “The look on children’s faces when I let them sit inside of the car to have their picture taken.” Jim also joked that the absolute favorite car that he would one day want to own is “the last cool car I saw at the last car show, or the next cool car that I’ll see at the next car show I attend.” Throughout the years, the Madame Mechanic Car Show has featured everything from a 1913 Model T to a 2008 Lamborghini. Karen Dunn from Poway Transmissions explained, “Automobiles are a part of American history and its future and we believe they should be celebrated.” She also mentioned that the Madame Mechanic Car Show should not be confused with the MotorHead Madness car show, both of which are organized by Poway Transmissions. The next Madame
Mechanic show is this June 1 at the RB Alive! Street Fair. MotorHead Madness has another show scheduled for September and will double as a fundraiser for Soroptimist International of Poway. ¢
