It’s a Miracle!
F
Derrick Breaux Publisher
or the better part of last year, our two youngest kids (9 and 10 years old) have been asking for pet hamsters. My wife and I had several conversations about it and ultimately decided that we would succumb to the request. After all, isn’t owning and taking care of hamsters part of the magical childhood experience? Isn’t it supposed to teach responsibility – and all of that other stuff that kids need to learn the hard way? So, a couple of days before Christmas, my wife headed to the pet store and came home with, not one, but two male Roborovski hamsters (the smallest of the dwarf hamsters). I have to admit, the little guys are very cute. Needless to say, they were the hit of the gift exchange. Fast Forward 15 Days. My daughter had a friend over for a play date. All of a sudden, I heard high pitched shrieks and screams (which aren’t that uncommon during these play dates) coming from upstairs followed by the inevitable rumbling of footsteps running down the stairs. Both girls were screaming at the top of their lungs, “The boy hamster is having babies! How can a boy hamster have babies? Oh my goodness. What should we do? What should we do?” Chuckling and with a bit of a dismissive attitude, I let them know that this was literally impossible. However, upon further observation, I realized that the impossible had in fact happened. It was a miracle! The “boy” hamster was definitely giving birth – not to one baby, but to a litter of six little hamsters. The Breaux household went into immediate lockdown. Chaos had officially set in. Once word of the miracle hit the streets, parents and other friends were quickly en route to check out the new little guys. There were even talks of live hamster cams. Life as we know it would clearly not be the same. As family and friends gathered to see the modern day miracle, I immediately began consulting with Google (knower of all things) to try to figure out how this could have happened. Google responded by letting me know that the gestation period for ‘Robo’ hamsters is about 22 days. This meant that the “boy” hamster was pregnant when we purchased her. This information prompted additional questions. I put more intense pressure on Google to get to the bottom of the mystery. Is the other hamster also a female? If not, should we separate them? Google was a bit indecisive in this area, so we ultimately decided to move the hamster of unknown sex into its own cage the next day, especially once we realized that the mother had already exiled it into a distant corner of the cage. It seemed like the right thing to do. Fast Forward 21 Days. Since Google had instructed us not to mess with the baby hamsters, we merely observed for several weeks while contacting friends who might be interested in adopting some of the critters. The hamster cam idea had also been overridden because we couldn’t quite figure out how to make it work (code phrase for “I was lazy”). The baby hamsters were now weaned from the mother and running around. They were as cute as you can imagine. Control of the Breaux household had now been regained. Fast Forward One More Day. I received an unexpected text message from my wife, “Our boy hamster (I can’t repeat all of her words) just had SIX MORE BABIES!” I realized we had officially lost control once again – in fact, it seems we were never in control after all. Talks of hamster cams resumed. Visitors stopping by to see the new miracle babies stepped up to an all-time high. We did Facebook posts. We hit the phones. Desperate emails were sent out. We needed more people to adopt more hamsters! At the end of all of the excitement, there are two things that I am now certain of. For starters, the mother hamster is officially not a boy. Additionally, the other original hamster is definitely not a girl. Other than that, all I can do is enjoy the chaos and laugh.

spiring young fishermen recently headed to Lake Poway for the 20th Annual Youth Fishing Derby. The free event reserved the lake all morning exclusively for kids ages 4 to 15. The City of Poway, Mike Long, and Captain Ron Baker came together along with other organizers and sponsors to host a fun-filled event complete with prizes, entertainment, story-telling contests, free barbecue lunch, and, of course, fishing. The lake was freshly restocked with 3,000 pounds of rainbow trout and closed to all fishing for the days prior to the derby, ensuring there would be plenty of fish for the young participants. Prizes were awarded per age division, as well as a grand prize awarded for the heaviest trout weighed during the competition. SHE’S INVINCIBLE ALANA ALBERTSON IS AN AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR, A BALLROOM DANCER, AND A DOG RESCUER by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography
A
lana Albertson is no stranger to receiving accolades for her writing endeavors – she has won numerous awards through Romance Writers of America over the last several years. She wasn’t prepared, however, for the incredible response to her latest novel, Invincible, before it was even published. “Invincible debuted at #1 on Amazon Movers and Shakers. The blurb [about the book] went viral, and the three top book-bloggers wrote about it,” related Alana. Invincible is a romantic thriller about a Navy SEAL who discovers a kidnapped San Diego coed and risks his life and career to save her. According to Alana, Indestructible, the sequel to Invincible, is due out in June, and she is also putting the finishing touches on a young adult novel that retells her favorite book, The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Alana Albertson Author Poway since 2010 Gardening and ballroom dancing Old Poway Park
Although Alana has always written, she didn’t pursue publishing until a novelist friend loved one of her manuscripts so much that she passed it along to her agent. Alana, who is a graduate of Stanford and Harvard, also runs a college admissions counseling and test preparation company, Academe Advantage, and is the president of Romance Writers of America’s Contemporary Romance Chapter. She has this advice for aspiring writers: “Study the craft, reread your favorite books and dissect them to see how they are written. Also, live life to the fullest – take interesting jobs, travel, and meet fascinating people.” In addition to her writing and business pursuits, Alana enjoys ballroom dancing. “I am a ‘recovering’ professional ballroom dancer. When I was in college, I fell in love with San Diego when I would visit to train with my ballroom dance coaches,” stated Alana. Knowing how much she loved the San Diego lifestyle, when she and her husband, a former Marine, decided to start a family, San Diego was where they wanted to settle. “We wanted to find a family-friendly community in San Diego with great schools and parks. Our realtor showed us our home in Poway and we knew it was the place for us,” said Alana. She, her husband, and their two sons enjoy Lake Poway, going to the beach, and museums. When she is not writing, dancing, or exploring San Diego with her family, Alana is helping dogs in need. “We founded Pugs N Roses, a dog rescue. We rescue shelter dogs – pugs and pug mixes – and adopt them out to loving homes,” explained Alana. ¢

Colie’s dancing successes in her eight years performing are many, including numerous double platinums, high point awards, and judge’s choice awards. She even received a first place overall three times in a row with one lyrical group. As far as unforgettable experiences, Colie credits dancing in the Disneyland Christmas Day Parade as the most memorable. Inspirations for Colie consist of all of her dance teachers, and she also draws motivation from her hard-working dance mates. Her most important encouragers, however, are her parents. “Without their support I wouldn’t be able to do this,” she confided. “They drive me to dance every day, to my competitions, and to everything I need.” It surprises many to know that she has asthma, because it doesn’t stop Colie from “I STARTED AT THE practicing six days a week. A student at AGE OF FOUR TO Meadowbrook Middle School, she’s loving Spanish because it is an opportunity to learn MAKE FRIENDS,” another language and communicate with SHE EXPLAINED, more of the world. :::: HEALTHY SMILES
Rheumatoid Arthritis and Gum Disease Researchers continue to find links between gum disease (periodontitis) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Periodontitis is an infection in your gums that destroys the structures supporting your teeth. Symptoms of periodontitis include loose teeth and gums that are red, swollen, and bleed easily. RA may lead to periodontitis: • If RA makes your hands stiff and painful, you may have trouble brushing and flossing properly. Good oral hygiene is necessary to prevent plaque buildup. • Some medications used to treat RA may lower your ability to fight off infection, which may lead to more plaque-causing bacteria. • RA may affect your salivary glands and cause your mouth to be too dry. Saliva helps protect your mouth from bacteria and plaque buildup. Doctors think that RA is caused by a combination of the genes you’re born with and events in your life that trigger those genes to become active. Periodontitis may be one of those triggers.
What You Can Do to Prevent or Control Periodontitis Although we still need more research on the links between periodontitis and RA, good oral health is especially important if you have RA. If RA symptoms are keeping you from brushing or flossing properly, talk to your dentist. You may need to have your teeth professionally cleaned more often, rinse with special mouthwashes, or get routine laser gum therapy. Furthermore, repair or straighten hard-toclean, crooked teeth in order to control periodontitis.

his year’s Poway High School (PHS) wrestling team finished the regular season undefeated in dual meets and tournament competition and topped off a phenomenal year by securing their 40th league championship. The Titans only lost four out of 126 dual meet matches. The Titans also remained within the top 10 high school wrestling programs in the nation, being ranked ninth by FLOwrestling. “Our kids have worked hard and wrestled well this season,” said Head Coach Wayne Branstetter. “We are continuing to focus on improving every day and working hard to finish strong.” At the recent CIF state wrestling championships, the Titans once more scored big. The PHS wrestling team finished second overall as a team, and nine PHS wrestlers earned state medals with top-eight finishes. Senior Colt Doyle successfully defended the title he won last year, remaining the state champion at 160 pounds with a 12-5 victory. Ralph Tovar, another PHS senior, also won his championship with a 5-0 win in his final match, finishing the night at 43-2. Other PHS medalists were Andrew Tausch (sixth place, 182 pounds), Brandon Kier (eighth place, 120 pounds), Chase Zollman (eighth place, 106 pounds), Chris Bailey (fourth place, 195 pounds), D.J. Garcia (seventh place, 138 pounds), Liam Sorahan (fifth place, 220 pounds), and Manny Lair (fifth place, 132 pounds). hile the Gaswirth family was first drawn to Poway for the school district’s excellent reputation, they have since discovered a community they are proud to call home. In 1996, the Gaswirths relocated to Sycamore Creek. “The neighborhood has always supported each other during good times and bad, and we consider those who live here among the best friends and finest people we have ever known,” Alan recognized. The truest testament to these words occurred when Diane was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011. “Our Poway friends and neighbors were incredible – helping with meals, getting the kids to and from school and sporting events, and more,” acknowledged Alan. Alan and Diane first met in 1981 while attending UCSD. Both went on to earn Master’s degrees from San Diego State University and Cal State, Northridge, respectively. Today, Alan is the controller at South Coast Winery Resort and Spa in Temecula. Diane has worked for United Healthcare

Tired of Tummy Trouble? FOLLOW SIX SIMPLE STEPS TOWARD BETTER DIGESTIVE HEALTH by LEIGH VAN VRANKEN, M.D.; Scripps Clinic, Rancho Bernardo
Everyone experiences digestive distress from time to time – including diarrhea, constipation, bloating, gas, or heartburn. While many digestive issues are uncomfortable or embarrassing, they often are not serious and can be eliminated with some simple lifestyle changes. Try these six tips to help your digestive system stay on track. 1. Eat small, frequent meals. Prevent indigestion, bloating, and heartburn by changing how often you eat without increasing your overall calorie intake. Instead of three squares a day, enjoy four to five smaller meals and eat them more slowly. Taking time to eat and chewing food properly makes you feel full, which prevents the overeating that can upset your digestive tract. 2. Drink plenty of water. Water helps your body flush waste and toxins and prevents constipation. Water needs vary by individual, depending on numerous factors such as activity level, geographic location, and temperature. If you have questions about how much water you need per day, check with your doctor. At the same time, limit alcohol, which interferes with acid secretion and nutrient absorption. Too much alcohol can contribute to heartburn, diarrhea, and liver issues. 3. Exercise regularly. Daily physical activity can help your body’s digestive system move things along and eliminate waste. Try walking, cycling, swimming, using an elliptical trainer, or hiking. 4. Maintain a healthy body weight. Extra pounds, especially around the midsection, can make digestive issues such as heartburn, gas, and burping worse.
Looking for a new doctor? To find a Scripps physician near you call 858-223-1553 or visit www.scripps.org/92064. 26 • 92064Magazine.com • April 2015 | May 2015
5. Eat a balanced diet. Stay away from fried, greasy foods that are hard to digest, while making sure you include fiber-rich foods, which are important for overall digestive health. Fill your plate with foods like cherries, grapes, crunchy bell peppers, beans, whole grains, and nuts. Add fish to your list of healthy foods as well. The omega-3 fatty acids in fish can improve digestive issues by stabilizing cell walls to reduce inflammation. Probioticcontaining foods such as yogurt and kefir contain good bacteria that can crowd out any bad bacteria lurking in your gut. 6. Manage your stress level. A presentation can cause “butterflies in your stomach” or a sad experience is “gut-wrenching” because your brain has a direct impact on your stomach. Your digestive tract is controlled by a complex system of about 100 million nerves that starts in the brain and ends in the gut, so your emotions cause chemical and physical responses in the body that can result in pain and discomfort. If ongoing stress is an issue for you, try meditation or other relaxation techniques and make sure to get enough sleep. When should you see your doctor? Sometimes an upset stomach or chronic heartburn can be signs of a more serious condition, such as irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, or gallstones. Contact your primary care doctor if digestive issues interfere with your daily life. Seek immediate medical help if you have problems swallowing, bloody or black vomit or stool, abdominal pain, or unexplained weight loss. ¢

T
he Poway High School (PHS) FIRST Robotics Team, also known as Team Spyder, won a number of awards at the South Florida Regional competition, facing off against 54 other teams from around the country. Team Spyder won the Underwriters Laboratories Industrial Safety Award, recognizing the team that progressed beyond safety fundamentals with innovative solutions. As the winning team, Team Spyder demonstrated excellence in industrial safety performance throughout the competition. Safety Star of the Day was also awarded to Shelldon Boyd, a PHS team member. “Every team had a working robot and was very competitive,” said Rodger Dohm, the team’s lead advisor. “Our robot performed flawlessly.” Overall the team ranked 31 out of 55, an impressive finish considering the caliber of the competition and the team’s rough start with two penalties in the first match. The team learned how to operate their robot while in Florida, since they shipped it across the country directly after construction was finished. “This is our 10th anniversary competing in the FIRST Robotics competition,” said Rodger. “A personal thank you to ROP, PHS, Poway Unified School District, the PUSD Board of Education, and the many parents and mentors that helped the students to be successful this year.” Rodger explained, “This was an entire team accomplishment from industrial design to engineering and fabrication, entrepreneurship, and strategy for our team.” Team Spyder is completely student-run, with two

The Garden Road Elementary School community had tons of ‘50s-themed, classic fun at the recent All You Can Read Diner program. Vinyl records and musical notes hung from the walls. Teachers dressed up in poodle skirts to serve as waiters for all the students and families who attended, just like an oldfashioned diner – with one key difference. Instead of pancakes and bacon, they were serving up books! Families ordered books for delivery to their tables, and some students volunteered as busboys to clean up afterwards. The Garden Road PTA, led by President Belinda Hoerr, put on the event as a fun way to promote literacy. The school and PTA are currently seeking donations to fund the purchase of new library books, and those interested in supporting Garden Road’s library can contact Belinda at belindahoerr@gmail.com. National Foster Care Month in May is intended as a time to acknowledge foster parents, family members, volunteers, social workers, and other community members who support the foster care system and the children who depend on it. Across the country, nearly 400,000 children and youth are in foster care. To learn more about both awareness months visit www.childwelfare.gov. The young players of Poway Pop Warner (PPW) enjoyed a number of successes this past season and are excited to get ready for the next one. One Mitey Mite team, the Poway Raiders, was undefeated and was selected to represent the Palomar Conference during a Chargers preseason game in support of Heads Up Football, an initiative to make the sport safer. The team was led by Head Coach Jason Gonzales, who was also voted PPW’s coach of the year. He shared, “We are strong because we are truly a team from the players to our wonderful parents. When everyone works hard and does their job, we win.” Last season was also a special year for another team, the Poway Gators. They played the past five seasons in memory of their original head coach, Brian Dumas, who passed away just prior to their first season. Brian’s son, Bradley Dumas, continued to play on the team. The team is retiring with Bradley’s aging out of the program. For information on registration for the next season visit www.ppwfootball.org.

PUSD Foundation Golf Classic
Members of the PowayScripps Rotary Club made banana and blueberry smoothies for the kids attending the final event of the Boys & Girls Club’s month-long Little Jumps, Big Changes program. They served the smoothies at the Sulpizio Family Branch in Poway and presented a check for $500 to Branch Manager Katie Khasim. “Little Jumps, Big Changes is our fourth annual campaign to raise money and awareness for the healthy lifestyles initiative at the Boys & Girls Clubs,” said Katie. For the finale event, 140 kids came to the Sulpizio Branch for jump roping, bounce houses, and donated goodies. Each classroom is led by two to four credentialed teachers, all of whom are AMStrained and certified. “This allows students to draw from the strengths of multiple teachers instead of one, and allows the teachers to create a more comprehensive analysis of each child’s educational growth,” said Adela. The campus itself is constantly upgrading and adapting to suit the growing needs of the student community. A new elementary building, shade structures, and artificial turf are a few of the recent improvements. The entire community can look forward to participating in the Montessori mission with some exciting upcoming events. The annual CMS Auction and Dinner Benefit at Madera’s Country Club will be held April 18, and the students of CMS will present a music and movement program on May 3 at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. ¢

He spent 14 summers there as a camper, counselor, and director, and then decided to start his own venture, Outpost Summer Camps in 2001. Outpost Summer Camps offers three traditional camp

programs to children between the ages of 3 and 14, serving Poway and surrounding areas. According to Stuart, “Each camp has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” Three-week long sessions is what makes Outpost Summer Camps unique. Stuart explained, “In this amount of time children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” Children are able to form genuine relationships while at camp. Another way the camps stand out is with their commitment to safety. Outpost Camps have been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association and have also received Markel Insurance’s coveted Safety First designation for consecutive seasons with a perfect safety record. Stuart and his wife both have degrees in psychology and bring years of long-term child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested 8 to 10 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. Danceology offers a broad variety of camps and classes throughout the eight-week summer session for young boys and girls of all experience levels. “The camps are engaging atmospheres designed to build the foundation and love of dance while cultivating a personal relationship with the family and the student,” explained Danceology Owner Nicole Lucia. “We assess each dancer’s individual level and commitment and recommend classes specially designed for your child’s need.” Programs include five different tiny tot camps, intermediate workshops, and a beginning cheer/hip hop camp for ages 7 to 10. There are also boys-only hip hop and tap classes, as well as an adaptive dance class for young girls with special needs – the only local dance studio to offer such a program. Two important parts of the Danceology experience are the welcoming environment and high quality of instruction. Instructors are CPR-certified and always on-hand to guide young dancers. The emphasis on nurturing and confidence-building has proven to have incredible results. Over the years, Danceology students have accepted college scholarships and developed professional careers in the industry. “Since we’ve been open for over a decade, we’ve become experts in the field of dance,” said Nicole. “We’ve found our niche in creating that love and passion for performance and dance at a young age.” Sabrina Roux, a proud Danceology parent, enthusiastically attested to the program’s success. “We treasure every summer spent at Danceology,” she shared. “My daughter would not be as poised and well-rounded of a dancer today without having started in one of Danceology’s dance camps.” Find out more at www.danceology.biz. ¢

Stephanie Diaz Releases Rebellion
YOUNG 92064 AUTHOR LAUNCHES SECOND NOVEL IN YOUNG ADULT SCI-FI TRILOGY
L
ocal author Stephanie Diaz recently hosted a launch party for the release of her second novel. Stephanie Diaz grew up in Poway and graduated from Poway High School in 2010. She knew she wanted to be an author since a very young age, and has achieved that dream earlier than most. While she was a 19-year-old film student at San Diego State University, she sold her debut Young Adult science fiction trilogy to St. Martin’s Griffin/Macmillan. Stephanie is now 22 years old, having graduated SDSU in 2013, and was thrilled to see the second book in the trilogy reach bookshelves this year. Rebellion continues the saga that began in Extraction, the story of one planet’s extreme contrasts between the toxic surface world and the safer, privileged world of the core. Sixteen-year-old Clementine finds herself caught in the heart of the deadly conflict between the two zones. Stephanie shared that the launch party at Warwick’s bookstore in La Jolla was a great success and lots of fun for her and readers alike. “We had a great turn-out at the event!” said Stephanie. “About 40 people showed up for books, cupcakes, and sparkling cider.” She gave a talk about the journey to Rebellion’s publication, as well as the other books in the series. She then answered questions from the crowd and signed copies of the book. She concluded, “It was an awesome time.” The final book in the trilogy is titled Evolution and is scheduled to come out this fall. Foundation members, parents, and other community members gathered together for a Hollywood-themed night of auctions, refreshments, dancing, and laughter. The festivities took place at Maderas Golf Club, complete with the big white “hollywood” letters on the front lawn. “STARs stands for Science, Technology, Arts, and Reading, and it represents the underfunded programs at our school that our foundation focuses on,” shared STARs Committee Co-Chair Judith McAulay, who organized the event along with fellow co-chair Holly Mefford II. “Our foundation and PTA jointly sponsor and benefit from this event, and this year, one area of fundraising focus will be to sponsor a performing arts program for Tierra Bonita children.” Learn more at www.tbesstars.com. ¢

Spring Brings Big Changes
A
pril begins an exciting time of the school year – with summer break only a few months away, students begin to realize that there will be many changes in the near future. For seniors, most colleges will be sending out acceptance letters by April 1, and hopefully not as an April Fools’ joke. Seniors then have to decide which college they will choose or what their plans will be once graduation is over. One senior, Rachel Culver, shares her feelings about college: “It’s scary but exciting at the same time. The exciting part is that in a few months we will be on our own, at
a new school, with people we’ve never met; the scary part is not knowing what to expect.” While seniors are busy making big decisions about their future, juniors will begin to take the ACT and SAT while also beginning college research to help them decide where they want to apply when their senior year rolls around. Kaitlyn Umsted reflects on how quickly her three years of high school have gone by. She states that as a junior it is sad knowing that, in just a few short months, she will go from seeing her senior friends every day to very rarely.

Freshmen and sophomores continue to enjoy their time as underclassmen but realize that in a few months they too will be moving a grade higher. With spring break beginning on April 6, students will have time to relax, reenergize, and catch up on their studies. Once relaxed, students will be ready to face the many changes the future holds. ¢ Megan Ligas is a senior at Poway High School. Melanie Duong opened the doors of Sun Orthodontics in 1997 and has served the community ever since. “We are passionate about what we do every day to create beautiful, radiant smiles and healthy, functional bites for our clients. Our team firmly believes in combining art, science, and the latest technology to accomplish these goals,” stated Dr. Duong. The practice offers comprehensive orthodontic treatment for all ages, treating a wide spectrum of dental and skeletal problems, including crowding, spacing, crossbite, overbite, underbite, and growth problems. Sun Orthodontics collaborates with general dentists, periodontists, prosthodontists, and oral surgeons on many cases, including those that are complex and require multiple steps and procedures. According to Dr. Duong, patients will notice the warm, comfortable environment of the practice, offering Wi-Fi, gourmet coffee, movies, and video games before appointments.
The staff is committed to building longterm relationships with their clients, offering scheduling flexibility and the ability to be a part of the treatment decision-making process. “We involve our patients in their initial consultation and treatment options and in every step along the way,” explained Dr. Duong. She has sponsored me in pageants, including Miss Rancho Bernardo Teen and Miss Philippines of San Diego. She also attended my birthday celebrations. enny Ribnik and her husband moved here 26 years ago to raise their family. Penny retired in 2012 as a director and teacher at St. Bartholomew’s Preschool. Her husband is a retired analyst. They’re still in Poway with their two dogs, and now three grown children and one grandson. “I was looking for a volunteer opportunity that would allow me to work with children on a long-term basis,” mentioned Penny Ribnik. “I found Voices for Children on a volunteer match site and the rest is history.” Voices for Children was founded in 1980. The private, nonprofit organization recruits, trains, and supervises court-appointed special advocates, called CASAs, who advocate for the rights and wellbeing of foster children in San Diego.
As a CASA volunteer, Penny acts as a fact-finder for judges who preside over foster children’s cases. She visits with her case child (or siblings) at least monthly to gather information from the child, caregivers, family members, court documents, social workers, healthcare providers, and school officials. A CASA, like Penny, is often the only consistent adult presence in a foster child’s life. “There is no ‘perfect family’ and it can be difficult to weigh all the factors in a case and decide on a recommendation,” added Penny. “However, my supervisor is always there to discuss my cases with me and to offer advice. Upcoming information sessions and other ways to help Voices of Children can be found on www.speakupnow.org. With children still in focus, Penny and two friends, also retired educators, run a preschool program at San Diego Botanic Garden once a month. Penny likes to crochet, craft, search for treasures in the thrift shops along Poway Road, and enjoy local cuisine with her husband. She’s learning new things. She took a class on mindfulness meditation at Pomerado Hospital. Her love for children inspires Penny to continue giving back, even as she’s learning to sew to make tiny clothes for her new grandson. ¢

ow that the lovely weather has reminded you of the arrival of spring, there are a few ideas worth considering besides spring cleaning. We are all aware that increasing energy costs, legislation, decommission of San Onofre (estimated at $4.4 billion), and warming weather trends are causing substantial increases in residential utility rates. And we well recall how much our utility bills can be at the height of the summer. However, as a homeowner you can empower yourself by taking advantage of programs available in San Diego. The Home Energy Renovation Opportunity Program (HERO) allows homeowners to apply for low-cost loans making energyefficient, renewable energy products more affordable. HERO provides 100% financing at low interest rates, flexible payment terms, and repayments through your property taxes. The HERO
WITH 38 YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY, NATURAL ENERGY HAS INSTALLED MORE SOLAR THAN ALL OTHER LOCAL COMPANIES COMBINED loan stays with the property even if it is sold and payments may be tax deductible, lowering the effective interest rate. Now that you have empowered yourself, consider solar energy for your home. Why all the interest in solar? Solar panels are popping up on roofs all over the neighborhood. What do your neighbors know that you don’t? It is undeniable that we all pay the proverbial sunshine tax to live in beautiful San Diego. Why not take advantage of such an abundant, clean, renewable energy source? Installations continue to boom and solar is more affordable than ever. According to Solar Energy Industries Association, (SEIA) this is because “since the third quarter of 2010, the average price of a photovoltaic (PV) panel has dropped by 63%.” Your neighbors also know that the federal solar tax credits end next year, and in addition to the HERO program, there are attractive finance and leasing programs with no money down for solar installations. They may also know that Natural Energy is the leading company in San Diego for solar. With 38 years in the industry, Natural Energy has installed more solar than all other local companies combined and offers solar PV systems made right here in the United States. Consider Natural Energy for your solar energy needs and go solar now! ¢

n August 2014, Dr. Ellen Im took over the former Poway Kids Dental Care to open Dr. Ellen Im Pediatric Dentistry. “I wanted to put my name to the practice, letting parents know who will be treating their child,” shared Dr. Ellen. “I believe seeing one doctor strengthens the doctor-family relationship to help establish trust and familiarity. It has always been my philosophy to create a comfortable environment where if I were a parent, I would be content to bring my family to the practice.” As both a board certified pediatric dentist and a mother of two, Dr. Ellen believes that every child is a gift and treats each child as her own. From the healthy to the medically compromised and developmentally disabled, she specializes in oral health treatment for infants, children, and teens. Dr. Ellen’s approach is to focus on the individual needs of the child and to deliver quality treatment according to those needs. “Dr. Ellen Im displays an obvious passion and dedication to her patients and practice,” wrote Jennifer in a Google review. “My daughter enjoys the upbeat and colorful
environment set up for the kids,” wrote another mom. Several reviewers had similar comments – that their children were no longer scared of the dentist. “After the first visit,” wrote Danny, “Joshua asked when he could go back.” “The most rewarding part about my profession is that I can treat a family and watch them grow up,” added Dr. Ellen. Every procedure is explained in a positive and child-friendly way. Parents are welcome to accompany their children during the visit. With state-of-the-art technology, Dr. Ellen employs laser dentistry, which is valuable for reducing discomfort in soft tissue treatment for issues such as tongue-ties and canker sores. For more anxious patients, sedation dentistry is an option to provide a little extra comfort. To broaden services for her patients, Dr. Ellen partners with an orthodontist to offer orthodontic treatment. Dr. Ellen Im is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Because of her aptitude for science and the appeal of dentistry’s hands-on approach, she attended the University of Maryland Dental

School after graduating from UC Irvine with a B.S. in biology. Having had a caring pediatric dentist growing up, Dr. Ellen understands the impact pediatric dentists can have on the health and self-esteem of children. She completed a pediatric dental clerkship in dental school, and was awarded for excellence in patient care. Since graduating dental school and even during her pediatric dental residency in D.C., she provided dental care to the underserved pediatric population in the greater Baltimore and D.C. area. Dr. Ellen contributes a great deal of her personal time to the community. She and her team visit schools to give interactive oral hygiene presentations and conduct free dental screenings with take-home kits. The practice also sponsors sports teams and community events. Dr. Ellen understands the importance of a strong community and holds fast to her motto of “building a healthy community one smile at a time.” ¢

The event will benefit victims of domestic violence and their children, as well as other women’s programs. “The tea is increasing in size from 300 guests to 500 guests this year since last year’s event sold out a month in advance,” shared Ginny Brown, Vice President Membership of SIRB. “Purchase your tickets early so you won’t miss this event!” Tickets are $65 and are available through April 22. For attendees and those who can’t make the date, the Soroptimists are launching a new way to give back this year. A GiveSmart website will allow participants to bid on silent, live, and pledge opportunities at www.hightea15.auction-bid.org. The website will go live two weeks before the event, and those with reservations for the high tea will be notified via email when the site is active. “This electronic bidding will allow attendees to relax and socialize while placing bids through their smart phones,” said Ginny. The exciting items up for auction will include a diamond bracelet specially made by Unicorn Jewelry & Watch Boutique, VIP tickets to Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett, and a vacation in Lake Tahoe. Find tickets and learn more at www.highteafashionshow.org. ¢

Right Now is the Best Time for First-time Buyers to Purchase a Home!
B
eautiful, sunny San Diego County is one of the most soughtafter markets to find a home. With its moderate climate year-round, idyllic location, and close proximity to the beach and mountains, it’s no wonder so many families are looking to move here. Although it is ranked as one of the most expensive markets to purchase a home, the San Diego housing market is making a push forward and seeing some positive signs for 2015. San Diego has seen an upswing of economic growth in the past few years. The city is making some progress coming out of the Great Recession, which is great for those looking to buy a home in the area. As more jobs are becoming available and people are beginning to see those higher wages, many homes are being purchased before they are even built. While the market is hot, buyers are jumping on the chance to own their first home or downsize. Home values have seen a 4% increase, which is a good thing for the San Diego housing market. The median home price is San Diego is about $518,800 with a mortgage rate of 4.8%. Mortgage rates remain low in the San Diego housing market, but credit still remains tight. The median household income is going to be the driving force for the housing industry.
Local employment growth is the main driver in the San Diego housing market. As of now, the job growth is looking healthy moving in 2015. This past year, San Diego County added 30,000 jobs and now boasts an unemployment rate of 5.8%. Stability is key. Right now is the best time to purchase a home for those first-time buyers as interest rates are going to creep up more slightly this year again. This is still a good thing as it will bring balance to the San Diego housing market and keep the home price appreciation down. Don’t hesitate to get a new home or move up to the home of your dreams. The San Diego housing market is in a great place starting out 2015. Investing in a home in San Diego County at this time is definitely a beneficial thing for any family.
