Traditions.

A

s we approach the holiday season, you can’t help but reflect back on family traditions and memories that most of us have been fortunate to grow up with. It’s very easy to turn on the “autopilot” and get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life – our work schedules, house duties, playing taxi driver for our children. The list goes on and on... I recently attended a business seminar in Las Vegas. A topic that came up frequently throughout the seminar was family traditions and memories – specifically childhood memories. To be honest, until I was asked to recall and analyze some of my best memories over the past 39 years, I had not given it much technical thought. Sure, everyone has memories – some that they hold dear to their heart and some that they may want to forget. But forcing myself to take a trip down memory lane proved to be a rewarding and enlightening exercise. I believe that there are a few types of memories (generally speaking) that are welcomed and tend to stand out in most people’s minds – the good memories and the memories surrounding family traditions. I can easily pull up the good memories. Childhood sports. Playing with friends in the neighborhood. Video game marathons. Derrick Breaux Family vacations and road trips. Awesome cardboard box forts! Publisher But one of the things that is easy to overlook is the stability that comes along with traditions. Most of our family traditions involved holidays. Growing up, there were always certain things that I could rely on. To name a few, I knew exactly what we were going to be doing on Christmas Eve every year. I knew what food would be served for Thanksgiving. I loved the annual family camping trip – always at the same lake and campsite. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I definitely found peace in the consistency that came along with these traditions. My son made me feel good the other day when we were discussing our upcoming holiday plans. My wife and I were bouncing a few different ideas around when he blurted out, “but we always cook gumbo on Halloween and Christmas Eve!” In his mind, I’m sure the little things like cooking a family favorite on certain days of the year are just “what we do.” But they are actually so much more than that. I intend to continue with as many of the traditions that have been passed along to me, and I hope that one day my kids will be able to reflect on these traditions and choose to carry them on and introduce them to their own families. To family, creating memories, and carrying on with great traditions. Happy Holidays! Derrick Breaux, Publisher

Mothers and Daughters GIVING BACK

N

ational Charity League, Inc. (NCL) Poway Chapter is committed to strengthening the mother daughter relationship through a six-year program of philanthropic work, leadership development and cultural experiences beginning when the daughter enters the seventh grade. Some moms belong for just six years, while others with several daughters have spent ten or more years as a part of the organization. Becky Claudio joined NCL in 2002 with her oldest daughter Danielle. Marisa followed in 2004, Cilia in 2005 and Sierra in 2009. Becky will leave NCL when Sierra graduates in 2015. Cheri Kuptz, a founding member in 1999 and former chapter president, was active while her daughters Whitney and Kelsey were involved. After the girls graduated, Cheri remained a supporting member until her daughter Amy joined in 2010. Both Becky and Cheri agreed that the best part of being in NCL for so long was seeing how the Poway chapter has evolved and having the opportunity to meet the many amazing women who make up the organization. The chapter holds a Holiday Home Tour showcasing three beautifully decorated homes in Poway. Tickets are $25 with the proceeds going to support local charities and the Gayle Kennedy Memorial Scholarship Fund. This year’s event takes place on Saturday, Dec. 7. Tickets can be purchased at www.nclpoway.org.

The membership drive runs from November through January. Members reside, or have a daughter who attends a school, within the Poway Unified School District boundaries says Pam Myers, Vice President of Membership. The Poway Chapter supports twenty-one different philanthropies. Last year, nearly 300 members provided more than 8,000 hours supporting philanthropies. :::: FACES IN THE CROWD

t t J Thomas John Farley’s Annual Hillside Christmas Display Brightens the Poway Horizon by KELLEY GUSICH | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

Name: Thomas John Farley Age: 56 Community: Poway since 1989

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree A 25-year Poway resident, Thomas John Farley came originally for the schools, the land, and to live in a rural setting. He stayed because he learned that “the folks who lead this community are really good people, and their willingness to work hard has resulted in a community that everyone is very proud of.” One of the ways Thomas began his own involvement in the community came with a show of his Christmas spirit that has burgeoned into a yearly display that can be seen from miles around.

You Are the Tree Most Loved Thomas’s annually lit Christmas display started as a 10-foot pipe on the roof in 1989, then grew to 15-feet the following year. At the 25-foot

mark, Santa Ana winds blew it over, so it was moved out into the yard, where the display continued to ‘grow.’ “It’s presently about 78-feet tall, which seems to fit the hillside,” he shared, “so it’s done growing.”

How Often You Give Us Delight The display structure is usually visible on the horizon by late October. It has been lit on Dec. 1, at 4:30 a.m., every year since the beginning. The color scheme is always altered, so the lighting has a surprise element to add to the tradition of the display.

In Brightly Shining Christmas Light When asked the main reason he puts up the project every year, Thomas gave one word: fun.

14 • 92064Magazine.com • December 2013 | January 2014

“Blurring the lines between work and fun on this annual project has resulted in some wonderful gatherings of friends, random mail and gifts from strangers, even Christmas carolers.” Thomas has many interesting elements to his life, from the fact that he just got married 3 years ago after 25 years of dating his wife, to the idea that he loves flying so much that he thinks he’s coming back in his next life as a bird.

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree But the element Poway and San Diego residents can really share is the majestic, fantastically lit 78-foot Christmas display on the hillside in 92064. “I remember the first time I saw it while driving into Poway on Poway Road,” Thomas said, “and I knew I needed to do it every year, for everyone.” ¢

his year the Poway Special Olympics Softball Team took not one, but two teams to the 2013 Regional Tournament at the Rancho Bernardo Community Park. Both teams grabbed the gold and silver medals. It was all thanks to the hard work of their 75 star players, Coach Tony Rubino, and Manager Jody Campillo. The team would like to thank Poway Elks Lodge for their generous sponsorship and for hosting their awards ceremony on Oct. 27. Gold medal winners were Barry Cunningham, Chris Alarcon, James Vanausdavis, Jason Polson, John Kriz, Kevin Garnica, Matt Jaffe, Matthew Murphy, Nick Imthurn, and Stephen Bean. orn nearly three months early and weighing only one pound fourteen ounces, Poway native, Katie Anastas, was at risk of never breathing, walking, speaking or seeing properly, but astonishingly, she thrived. “Because of my miraculous outcome,” Katie explained, “I’ve felt inspired to be the best person I can be in my family, school and local community.” As an attendee of the Academy of Our Lady of Peace, the only all-girls high school in San Diego, Katie is an excellent role model

for her younger sister. While both English and Spanish are her favorite subjects, Katie has especially excelled in writing. To date she’s won the Alumnae Book Scholarship, the BBB Torch Award Scholarship, the American Legion Essay Contest, some poetry contests and helped write the award winning script for the Spring Sing, her school’s annual musical competition. In addition, this year Katie is an editor for her school’s newspaper. Inspired by her great grandmother, grandmother and mother, Katie actively

became involved in community service. She revealed, “Their love and support has helped me throughout my life, and I hope that I can offer similar encouragement to other people around me.” Katie is the current president of her school’s Peace Commission, a club that organizes service projects and raises awareness of social concerns. Club members listen to speakers, screen movies and documentaries and raise funds to tackle issues like homelessness, human trafficking and the lack of clean water.

Character. Competition. Commitment.

My kids have had a lot of coaches – basketball, soccer, baseball – and none of them have shown the expertise, the concern, or the drive for excellence that Sol’s coaches have shown my child. They are incredible role models! – Nancy W (parent)

Further, Katie recently earned her Gold Award, the highest award possible for Girl Scouts, for creating and teaching computer classes at schools and low-income housing facilities. Her goal was to help children become better prepared for completing computer projects. Katie’s great grandmother and grandmother also inspired her current hobbies. Her great grandmother introduced her to golf as a child, and Katie now plays golf on her high school team. Her grandmother taught her how to sew in middle school, and this year Katie made Halloween costumes for herself and her sister. For the future, Katie plans to continue studying English, Spanish and supporting her community. She believes English will prepare her for possible careers in education, journalism or film, and she hopes to practice her Spanish and learn another culture by studying abroad. She also aspires to join a service organization in college similar to the Peace Commission so she can continue working to help others in all parts of the world. ¢

he 41st Annual Poway Rodeo was a hit once again, with cowboys from all over the country competing for cash prizes and points. Special events included steer wrestling, bareback horse riding, bull riding, drill team, dancing and so much more. The Queen’s Pageant featured wonderful cowgirls from all over, flag-bearing and proud. Kids were kept plenty busy with junior barrel racing, mutton bustin’, and a boot scramble. The junior barrel race found Avielle Lehman in first place, followed by Mason Powers in second, and McKayla Brown in third. Congratulations to all the competition winners this year! REMARKABLE FAMILY THE CAMPILLO FAMILY STRIVES FOR POSITIVE CHANGE WITHIN THEIR POWAY COMMUNITY by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

W

hen Jody and Mark Campillo met in college at the University of San Diego they never imagined where life would lead them. “[We] became instant friends and enjoyed each other’s company, however, we never dated in college,” said Jody. Their friendship lasted beyond graduation, and after they had divorced their first spouses, the pair reunited in 2003. “I, at first, did not want to date Mark as I didn’t want to risk messing up our great friendship,” explained Jody, “but Mark persisted in his courting me and in 2004 we went on our first date in January, were engaged in April, married in September, and pregnant by November!” Today, with their four children, Barry (20), Ashley (18), Bradley (14), and Noah (8), the family is making an impact in the Poway community.

Parents: Mark Campillo (46) & Jody Campillo (44) Community: Poway (Green Valley/Vineland Hills area since 2005 Hometown: Both Mark & Jody were born in San Diego (both at Balboa Naval Hospital) Profession: Mark, GEICO – Corporate Trainer; Jody, CareFusion, Inc. – Senior Project Manager, Commercialization - Dispensing Children: Barry Cunningham (20, Abraxas Continuation School), Ashley Campillo (18, Poway High School senior), Bradley Campillo (14, Poway High School freshman), Noah Campillo (8, Chaparral Elementary School third grader)

The Campillos moved to Poway in 2005. “We moved primarily for the school district,” explained Jody. “What we didn’t know was that we would find our ‘home’ and a welcoming and supportive community.” And keeping their “home” thriving is a top priority for the Campillos – they are avid volunteers within the community. Mark is the Cub Scout Master, where he leads Noah and over 75 other scouts, and is a member of the Grad Nite committee at Poway High School. Jody has been instrumental in bringing the Williams Syndrome Awareness Walk to Poway, with her oldest child, Barry having been diagnosed with Williams Syndrome – a genetic condition marked by amazing social and music skills paired with challenges in social cognition, developmental delays, and some health issues. She also manages and fundraises for Poway’s Special Olympics Softball Team. Jody is an active member of Parent Advocates Seeking Solutions, a parent support group for special needs young adults in Poway, and next year she will support Next Stage U, a nonprofit organization providing a venue and resources for adults with special needs. Jody and Mark make an effort to show each of their children the importance of giving back. “We believe we have truly instilled a great sense of community involvement in our family,” noted Jody. Aside from Barry’s participation with local special needs sports leagues, he is very active in his church; Ashley is a member of Best Buddies Club, where she mentors students with special needs; Bradley volunteers with children and with the special needs community; and Noah attends AWANA Christian education at his church. “I love to see that the children can see how simple it is to impact positive change in our community,” Jody said. “I often remind them that, ‘It only takes a spark to get a fire going!’” ¢

Love on a Leash

The Foundation for Pet Provided Therapy by ROBIN KAUFMAN | President, San Diego Love On A Leash

W

hat do libraries, schools, hospitals, veterans facilities, domestic violence centers, and court rooms all have in common? They, along with a number of other places, all receive pet therapy visits from Love On A Leash (LOAL), the Foundation for Pet Provided Therapy organization. Love On A Leash is a national, non-profit, all volunteer organization established in 1984. The goal is simple – to bring smiles and comfort to those who are visited by a pet therapy animal. Pet therapy animals are privately owned and can be a dog, cat, or rabbit. The dogs can be pure breeds, mixed breeds, and come in all sizes. LOAL does not raise and train dogs to be service or companion animals. To become a fully certified LOAL pet therapy team, dogs must have basic obedience skills and a good temperament. After graduating from a six-week pet therapy training class and passing a control evaluation test (as well as passing the Canine Good Citizen test), the dogs and their humans must then complete a minimum of 10 supervised visits. For cats and rabbits, a veterinarian must certify their health and temperament. After initial certification, those pets must also complete a minimum of 10 supervised visits. There are three LOAL chapters in San Diego County – San Diego Love On A Leash (sandiegoLOAL@aol.com), which covers the north county inland areas; San Diego North County Chapter (mgleisberg@cox.net), which covers the north county coastal areas; and the San Diego Central Chapter (sandiegocentralloal@gmail.com), which covers everything in-between. To learn more about Love On A Leash, visit www.loveonaleash.org or San Diego Love On A Leash’s website at www.sandiegoLOAL.com. 

Join the Poway Secret Service

Poway City Councilmember, Steve Vous, has launched the Poway Secret Service, a unique organization that is very simple: no meetings, no dues, no rules, and no fundraising. The only requirement is volunteering and “connecting the needs with the help.” In other words, members only have to sign up and wait for a need to be filled. They receive text alerts to “needs” that must be met across Poway, whether it’s cleaning a park or providing a family with food. Already, the Poway Secret Service has over 200 members, ready and willing to help in the community. Steve Vaus said, “This is a community that is always there when a need arises – whether it is to search for a missing youngster or to fight a wildfire with pick-up trucks and garden hoses.” The organization is also gaining popularity at Poway High School, where some teachers are encouraging their students to sign up. For more information on joining the Poway Secret Service, visit www.powaysecretservice.com.

Knit For The Cure Supports Susan G. Komen

Founded in 2004, the Knit for the Cure Campaign recruits knitters & crocheters to create handmade items to be sold at various Komen events, one of which included the Race for the Cure which was held on Nov. 3 in Balboa Park. Although most items are created by San Diego County residents, the campaign had knitters and crocheters from all over including Connecticut, Virginia, and New York. This year, some San Diego knitters also formed a team and participated in the race. Knit for the Cure raised over $5300 this year. Seventy-five percent of the funds raised remain right here in San Diego to cover every step of the breast health journey – from education, outreach, mammograms, and diagnostics, to surgeries, chemotherapy, and more. The remaining 25% of each dollar raised funds national research to discover the causes and cures for breast cancer. For information on how to become involved in next year’s campaign, contact barbara.susangkomen@gmail.com.

We craft in an artisanal manner, look at what we do, check what we do, and focus what we do on the creation of a beer that many people will enjoy.”

Something Good is Brewing Lightning Brewery is Using Science to Bring out the Best in Its Beer by MICHELLE TREMBLAY

F

or Ph.D-level Biochemist, Jim Crute, science is second nature to him – and so is brewing beer. That’s why when he made the switch in his professional life to start up Lightning Brewery it seemed like a natural transition. “The Brewery began as an experiment; as a way to make a career change from Biotech to a related area that uses many of the same thoughts, theories and reliance on hard steady work

and attention to detail,” explained Jim. The brewery was founded as a small artisanal brewery and remains that way today; only now it boasts numerous awards and has its beers on tap or available in bottles in over 300 local restaurants, shops and grocery stores. Although Jim founded Lightning Brewery not quite a decade ago, his hobby in brewing beer began over 30 years ago. From the beginning, his science background has inspired him to find brewing methods to bring out the best

in his beer. “For example, our flagship beer Thunderweizen Ale is crafted with a very time-consuming and very hard to emulate process of decoction mashing,” said Jim, “This method enhances the body of the finished beer, dramatically improving taste, impression and enjoyment.” Methods such as this one, explained Jim, are what make Lightning Brewery so unique. “We are the first, and to my knowledge only, brewery in San Diego County that uses this process,” he noted.

First Semester Finishes Up, Winter Underway

I

t’s hard to believe it is already winter. The school year is going by so fast. And since winter is here that means it’s time for new sports to start preparation for their new season. These sports include boys and girls basketball, roller hockey, boys and girls rugby, boys and girls soccer, girls water polo, and wrestling. Practices have started in November for the invigorating season and through hard work and determination Poway’s athletics is sure to succeed. December is right around the corner and, with the holidays coming up, there are many concerts to spread both the joy and jolly spirit. The choir concert is on Dec. 10, the Orchestra concert is on the 18th, and finally the Band Concert is on the 19th in which Russian Christmas returns as an annual tradition. These groups are also

featured in the Winter Assembly which is on the 20th and allows the student body to listen to their classmates musical talents and cultural pieces right before Winter Break begins. One of the many activities at Poway High is Peer Counseling, who recruits new members this time of year. To become a part of this group, one must interview, fill out an application, and get teacher input forms. Then the “newbies” will join the rest of the peer counselors at the retreat in January. Many students love the retreat because it is a chance to get away after finals, develop closer and deeper relationships with classmates from all grade levels, and to learn new skills on how to become a better listener. As a peer counselor, listening is key to helping someone. Peer counselors learn that by listening they get

further into helping someone with their problems and by reframing from advice they allow the talker to think/work out their original problem. Most of the time people just want to be heard and express their problems and sometimes they truly want advice from others. However, Peer Counseling helps students develop the needed skill of listening that they will use forever. Students continue to progress for the rest of first semester as it quickly comes to an end in January. Finals are just around the corner and final grades a significant part of growth of a student in their academic success. ¢ Katey is a senior at Poway High School. She has been selected as the Titan Insider for the 2013-2014 calendar year. Katey can be contacted at info@92064magazine.com.

S

After School Magazine Partners With ZCode to Showcase Youth A special submission from the ASES after school program students at Mesa Verde Middle School

tudents from the Mesa Verde Middle School ASES, an after school program, have been given the rare opportunity to join forces with San Diego’s very own ZCode Magazines and go behind the scenes to learn the ins and outs of magazine creation. The After School Education and Safety (ASES) program is a grant-funded program that provides a fun, safe, stimulating environment for students whose parents cannot be home when their children return from school. Studies show that participation in the ASES Program increases students’ attachment to their schools, improves test scores, and keeps kids out of trouble. One of the ways the ASES program at Mesa Verde Middle School keeps students engaged is by offering enrichment clubs such as Comic Construction, Duct Tape Fashion, and Master Chefs that are not only fun, but also educational. The Daily Fluff is a monthly magazine consisting of articles, comics, artwork, and stories that have been submitted by the students in the ASES program. This year students get to be directly involved with the creation of the magazine which include writing articles, taking photos, and designing the layouts.

Aspiring writer, Nika Shlopov (6 th Grade), comments that she is really looking forward to working on the magazine this year. “I am new to the program so I’m excited to start writing articles and learn how to design,” said Shlopov. According to the website, ZCode Magazines is a privately owned, multi-media company based in the 4S Ranch in San Diego. The company brings a fresh innovative take on community magazines as well as related websites and newsletters. With the help of ZCode, The Daily Fluff hopes to showcase the many talented students in the North County community. ASES Site Coordinator, Monica Racicot, is enjoying watching the magazine grow into something much bigger. “We’re so thrilled to be working with ZCode magazine,” she said. “Not only will The Daily Fluff get some much needed attention, but the students will come away with transferrable skills that will carry on in to the workplace later in life.” For more information about the After School Education and Safety (ASES) program please visit the Poway Unified School District website at www.powayusd.com. If you’d like to learn more about The Daily Fluff contact Monica Racicot at 858-472-1689. ¢

WINTER FUN

SAN DIEGOSTYLE A Guide to Fun in the Wintertime Sun by JENNIFER FRAKES

W

hile much of the country is under gray skies and blankets of sleet and snow, San Diegans are enjoying sunshine and mild temperatures. Here are a few ideas on how to celebrate the winter months San Diego-style!

That’s So San Diego

Searching for the Seasons

Take a stroll through Balboa Park to admire the beautiful architecture and holiday decorations.

Experience a winter wonderland high atop Mount Laguna, only a onehour drive from San Diego. If the conditions are right, sledding and snowball fights may ensue.

Add a twist to a trip to the beach by collecting seashells to make unique gifts or to decorate holiday packages. For a special treat, walk along the cliffs of Point Loma to see migrating gray whales headed south for breeding season.

Drive up to the top of Mt. Soledad in La Jolla for a birds-eye view of the city aglow with holiday light displays.

Holiday Happenings

Winter in San Diego includes an abundance of holiday-themed festivals, parades and awe-inspiring spectacles. Parades include the Mother Goose Parade in El Cajon (Nov. 24), the Gaslamp Holiday Pet Parade (Dec. 8), and the stunning San Diego Bay Parade of Lights (Dec. 8 and 15). The Surfing Santa event at Seaport Village (Nov. 24), December Nights in Balboa Park (Dec. 6 and 7), and Christmas in the Park in Poway (Dec. 14) are always a hit for kids and adults alike, featuring food, crafts, holiday treats and activities.

48 • 92064Magazine.com • December 2013 | January 2014

Sometimes a little peek at the changing of the seasons is required to get into the holiday spirit. Take a drive up to Julian for gorgeous fall colors and maybe even snow during December and January. Don’t forget to order a cup of hot apple cider and a piece of apple pie!

It (Almost) Never Rains in San Diego

On the rare occasion that it rains, there are plenty of indoor activities that appeal to a variety of interests. See an IMAX film at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center and then visit one of the 15 major museums in Balboa Park. Take the trolley downtown and explore the New Children’s Museum or head to the San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum in Escondido. For sports enthusiasts, skate at one of several of San Diego’s indoor ice rinks, or reach new heights at an indoor rock climbing gym. Regardless of the weather, it is not hard to experience some wintertime fun in San Diego. ¢

indi Lou-Villa started playing field hockey at Kearny High School and has been playing, umpiring and coaching ever since. “I began umpiring as a freshman in college to give back to a sport that had given me so much,” said Cindi, who was inducted into the San Diego Sports Officials Hall of Fame in 2007. Cindi has coached the Poway High field hockey team, and was instrumental in developing field hockey teams throughout high schools in the Poway Unified School District. She is currently the coach of the Poway Mystix, field hockey club team with the goal of helping players in middle school and high school fulfill their dreams of playing at the collegiate level. When it comes to her coaching philosophy, Cindi focuses on team-building. “I teach the girls to respect and trust their teammates. I believe camaraderie is key to the team’s success, so I look for team chemistry,” explained Cindi. She also feels strongly that it is her job to give each and every player the physical and mental skills to succeed in the game. According to Cindi, the most rewarding part of coaching is watching as the girls do everything they can to become exceptional players. In fact, many of her Mystix players have gone on to receive field hockey scholarships to Division I, II and III colleges. She is also quick to point out that she learns as much from her players as they learn from her. “The game is changing every day, and my collegiate players help me stay informed about all the new tactics,” revealed Cindi. Cindi’s passion for field hockey doesn’t end on the practice field – her whole family is involved in the sport. “My husband, Mike, tried out for the 1984 Olympic field hockey team, and he was one of my volunteer coaches. My son, Vincent, and my daughter, Catherine, are both great athletes who help me coach,” related Cindi. She is also grateful to share her passion for the game with parents, volunteers and other coaches, so many of whom have helped to expand field hockey throughout the local community. While it may seem as if Cindi eats, sleeps, and breathes the game of field hockey, she also enjoys racquetball, puzzles, reading, and crocheting. “Coaching and umpiring are intense so playing hockey and racquetball releases my tension. Puzzles, reading and crocheting bring a quiet calm to my life,” stated Cindi. ¢

Corps Commander 92064 Native Eric Gil Named Commander of Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets

E

ric Gil, a 2010 graduate and Salutatorian of Poway High School, will serve as Corps Commander – the highestranking position a cadet can obtain – of the Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets for the 2013 – 2014 school year. The Corps of Cadets is a four-year leadership development program, one of the largest student organization at Texas A&M and one of the largest uniformed bodies of students in the nation outside the military academies. Membership in the Corps carries no military obligation. “I had originally planned to attend the Naval Academy,” Eric, now an industrial distribution major, explained. “None of the California schools met all of the requirements I needed and my stepfather, who is a retired Navy Commander from Midland, TX, suggested the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets. I participated in their Spend the Night with the Corps program and was completely won over by the tradition, spirit and friendliness of what is referred to as Aggieland. Texas A&M is a special place and my decision to join the Corps of Cadets is one of the best decisions I’ve made in my lifetime.” During his four years in the Corps, Eric has developed an impressive

resume both within the Corps and through other organizations at Texas A&M. He served his junior year as the Corps Sergeant Major, and is a member of the Ross Volunteer Company – a special unit within the Corps that is the the official honor guard for the Governor of Texas. Eric was recently selected for two highprofile recognitions including the Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Universities at Texas A&M and the Buck Weirus Spirit Award. He is also a member of the Texas A&M Foundation Maroon Coats, MSC Hospitality and the Professional Association for Industrial Distribution. For more information about the Texas A & M Corps of Cadets, visit www.corps.tamu.edu. Note: Eric is only the sixth cadet from outside of Texas to be selected in the history of A&M

:::: HOME TIPS

BIG CHANGES little things,

Tips to Freshen Up Your Home by JESSICA WOODS

H

ow many times have you made the promise to yourself to make some changes in your home? Let’s clean it up, repaint the walls, build a gazebo, or buy a new dining set! Well, let’s hold the horses for a second. This coming new year doesn’t mean you need to make big purchases or strip your house to the bare bones to make way for some new feng shui. Sometimes it’s the tiniest change in details that make all the difference.

A Coat of Paint

Duct Tape Decorating

In my neighbor’s foyer was once a wooden standing cabinet. It was well-used and getting on in years, but she noticed that it was a bit of an eyesore. Instead of buying a whole new cabinet, she repainted it. Not just plain black or white though, but a beautiful shade of teal that was pleasing to the eye. Before you decide to replace the cabinets or an old armoire, consider a trip to the hardware store and have some fun finding a color that would complement the room. For an additional look, you can change the handles or knobs along with that new coat of paint.

Fuzzy Frames Winter’s coming, so here’s a way to make your pictures and living room look a little cozier. Grab some plain wooden frames, old or new, and a few balls of colored yarn. Detach the backing of the frame, leaving just the square. Take a string of yarn and start wrapping it around the frame until every space is covered, and glue the ends down. When re-attaching the back, it’ll be quite snug, but can be resized to fit.

I know you’re probably thinking “Duct tape? Really?”, but duct tape has become remarkably versatile lately. Not only is it the most durable, long-lasting tape around, but if you enter any craft store, there’s a whole plethora of different colors and patterns to choose from. Take a blank lamp shade or a vase and apply a layer of duct tape. With a pair of some sharp scissors, it’s easy to make abstract patterns, mix color blocks, and make a design all your own. Decorate the lamp shade with some colorful waves, or add some duct tape flowers to the base of the vase, to make them look pleasing. This is especially fun for kids of all ages.

From Staged to Sold

Getting the Most When Selling Your Home

“W

hat can I do to get the most for my home?” I tell my clients they may not like the answer, but results speak for themselves. Maybe my years working in real estate, banking, high tech, and owning multiple companies, have made me more frank than most. But when it comes to making my clients the most money on their home, frankness and honesty, regardless of feelings, is required. So the answer: a high quality staging company (bad staging can be worse than no staging). I believe in staging so much that I pay for it on my listings, using one of the premier staging/ designing/remodeling companies in North County – Savvy Interiors. It’s a small investment in my clients and helps me continuously have the highest sale in a neighborhood. It can be difficult to have your furniture, wall art and family mementos removed. But it is even worse having buyer after buyer pass on your home. The money I spend making my clients’ homes look like models (with amazing photography, of course), makes me and my clients smile as their homes quickly go from ‘for sale’ to ‘sold’.
