Mother’s Day

A

lthough Mother’s Day was last month, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to write about it this issue. I have been blessed with great mothers surrounding me throughout my life. As we celebrate Mother’s Day each year, I often reflect on my childhood, teenage years, and young adulthood. I was raised by a very strong and supportive mother, and as a first grandchild, I also spent many of my younger years with my grandmother. Unfortunately, these two wonderful women are no longer with us today, but the memories and life lessons that I received from them are forever held close to my heart. Having lost my mother to a tragic automobile accident back in 2010 and my grandmother to cancer more recently, you would think that Mother’s Day would approach with some apprehension. However, much to my pleasant surprise, I’ve discovered that Mother’s Day has become one of the most meaningful holidays of the year. Even though the day typically starts with a little sadness – more like a period of reflection – it quickly turns into a very deep and significant day. Not only do I have an opportunity to celebrate the great memories surrounding my mother and grandmother, I also have the privilege of having several more fantastic mothers that surround me, support me, and make our lives more meaningful. While there are too many wonderful mothers in our friends and family sphere to mention in this letter, I would like to take a moment to recognize a few of them. First on the list, I would like to thank my wonderful wife, Jessica, for being such an awesome mother to our three kids (as well as many of the neighborhood kids). There are quite a few kiddos around the community (some adults in college now) that have grown up calling you “Momma” Breaux. We are all lucky to have you do what you do. Happy Mother’s Day, Jessica! Derrick Breaux I would also like to take a moment to send a heartfelt Publisher thank you to my mother-in-law Trish and mother-in-law Doreen. Not only are you both incredible influences on our family, but you are also wonderful grandmothers to our kids. We are all extremely happy to have you be a major part of our lives. Happy Mother’s Day, Trish and Doreen! Last but not least, I would like to recognize my sister. Not only are you a great sister, you are also a wonderful mother. I find great joy in watching the way you raise your three children, often displaying the incredibly familiar and nurturing parenting that our mother used with the two of us growing up. It warms my heart beyond words. Happy Mother’s Day, Angelique! And a belated happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers in the world (past and present) that have impacted our lives. I hope your Mother’s Day was filled with lots of hugs, special memories, love, and laughter.

or San Diego native John January MacDonald, music has always been a big part of his life. “My family made music important in our home,” recalled John. “Show tunes, jazz and classical music were played on the stereo by my dad all at high volume on the weekends.” As a hobby, John’s father sang barbershop quartet and his mother played the accordion and guitar. But it was John’s brother, Joe, an avid collector of rock, jazz, and soul music, who really served as his inspiration. “(My brother) fed my mind with the greater universe of musical expression,” shared John. “It only was matter of time before Clapton, Hendrix, and Chicago with Terry Kath became favorites of mine.” As a result, John took an interest in the guitar and soon started playing under the guidance of his teacher, Dave Hargrove. “Dave set my path to learning and teaching in motion when he asked me ‘What do you want to learn?’” remembered John, who now is a guitar teacher himself. “This philosophy of nurturing the student’s musical ambitions became my own teaching mantra, and has greatly contributed to keeping my students engaged in the guitar from a young age all the way to college.” Born in Claremont, John moved to Chula Vista as a teenager, where he attended The Chula Vista High School for the Performing Arts. Later, he learned recording production at Southwestern College before relocating to Portland, OR for some time. Since moving back to San Diego, John has appreciated living in Poway. “I love the green belt that runs along the southern boundary of

Poway and includes the bike paths and parks that run west along the ‘Ted,’” shared John. “I enjoy hiking and biking, and I’m passionate about local wildlife.” John often performs in Poway with one of his bands, Planet Jack – a classic rock cover band. His primary band is The January Berry Band, which he formed with his musical partner and girlfriend Linda Berry. “Linda is an excellent singer,” stated John. “We are considered a blues band, but we play funk, classic rock, and duets.” A few years ago, John was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in Chicago. He has received an award from the Billboard magazine songwriting competition as well. Most recently, John’s album Chemistry 101 was nominated for the Best Blues Album in 2018 by San Diego Music Awards. “The feedback from fans of Chemistry 101 is that people put it on and listen all the way through and then listen again and again,” said John. “For both Linda and me, this news has been very rewarding.” As for giving advice to aspiring musicians, John offered: “Listen to a lot of different music, check out funky bands from Africa, Persian music, Cuban and Caribbean music. Learn about the birth of jazz in New Orleans, how it lead to rock, blues, and everything we listen to today.” He added, “Making music is rewarding and brings people together… When you push past the butterflies in your stomach and just go for it, something magical and chemical happens.” ¢

Founded by husband and wife team Graham and Kyrié Bloem, SDT uses positive reinforcement, structure, and clear communication to help local dogs and their families. “No two dogs are the same, and we understand that each needs to be approached as an individual,” Graham explained. SDT offers obedience training from basic commands to advanced off-leash obedience, as well as Canine Good Citizen preparation and testing. Graham and his team work with all ages and breeds, offering private lessons and boot camp programs depending on each family’s needs. They also offer programs for behavioral issues and rehabilitation, therapy prep courses and service dog programs, and placement of pre-trained family and personal security dogs. Graham draws on his nearly two decades of experience to run a program that pet owners can trust. He’s a professional member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors, and International Association of Canine Professionals, and he’s an Animal Behavior College Certified Dog Trainer and Authorized Mentor Trainer. He has won a number of awards, including 20 • 92064 MAGAZINE.COM • June | July 2018

the American Red Cross Real Heroes Award, 10News Leadership Award, Waggy Award for Animal Welfare, and a finalist for the Inspiration Awards. Graham, Kyrié, and the entire SDT pack are proud of the difference they make for local families. They also give back through Shelter to Soldier, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Graham and Kyrié founded in conjunction with SDT. Shelter to Soldier adopts local shelter dogs and trains them as psychiatric service dogs for post 9/11 combat veterans in need. “We knew Shelter to Soldier wouldn’t succeed without leaning heavily on SDT, so we launched both simultaneously,” Graham said. “This allowed Shelter to Soldier to maintain low overhead and in turn help more homeless dogs and veterans in need of highly trained service dogs.” SDT and Shelter to Soldier have created countless success stories over the years, but some have stood out – including Nubs, an abused dog who befriended a U.S. Marine in Iraq under extraordinary circumstances. When LtCol Brian P. Dennis brought his canine companion back to the United States, Graham volunteered to guide Nubs through the rough transition. “Graham spent countless hours every week with Nubs for the better part of three months,” said LtCol Dennis. “What he was able to do was nothing short of miraculous. He took an abused, confused, terrified dog and eased him into the busy world of Southern California.” ¢

r. David S. Gilmore has a long and interesting career background. After serving as a nuclear engineer in the U.S. Navy for 11 years, he decided to make a change and pursue his passion of dentistry. He attended the University of the Pacific, where he earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery – graduating with high honors. Later, he completed a residency in Orthodontics, earning a second Master of Science degree in Dentistry and was the recipient of the prestigious Fred West Leadership Award. Dr. Gilmore served an additional 12 years as a dentist and orthodontist in the Navy. After retiring from the Navy in 2011, Dr. Gilmore opened Gilmore Orthodontics in Scripps Ranch – a community where he and his wife, Teryn, raised their two children. “Many of my patients live in the same area that I do, so I know and understand the importance of the culture of community in my practice,” explained Dr. Gilmore. “Besides creating great smiles, excellent customer service is our top priority. I treat all patients and their families as I would want my own family members to be treated.” Holding true to this mantra, Gilmore Orthodontics stands out among its competition. “Dr. Gilmore’s personality and caring nature is what patients routinely notice and comment on,” stated Leila Cahill, Scheduling Coordinator. “He spends a great deal of time with families, thoroughly explaining their treatment options in a way that enables them to

AT - A - GLANCE make informed decisions and not feel pressured.” Dr. Gilmore is especially proud of his caring staff. “I couldn’t ask for a better team. All have been brought on board based on their experience and abilities, but most importantly, their people skills and genuine enthusiasm to provide the best possible experience for our patients every time they come in,” explained Dr. Gilmore. “Our goal is simply to make our patients smile.” As a specialist with advanced training, Dr. Gilmore – who is Board-Certified by the American Board of Orthodontics – limits his practice exclusively to orthodontics. “We offer full, comprehensive orthodontics as well as early Phase I treatment using the most advanced traditional braces as well as clear aligners for children and adults alike,” explained Sara Davis, Treatment Coordinator. “We deliver treatment in a state-of-the-art facility using the latest technologies and techniques.” When it comes to choosing an orthodontist, Dr. Gilmore and his team understand that there are many options. “We understand patients’ concerns for the best value, but beyond the treatment fee itself, patients need to be comfortable with the office, the experience they have, and the relationships with the doctor and the staff,” stated Dr. Gilmore. “These intangibles are so important to us as well as to our patients. A patient’s orthodontic experience typically involves several visits over the course of treatment, so we understand that it needs to be a good and comfortable fit.” ¢

COMMUNITY STUFF

PUSD Schools Recognized

7th Annual Rubber Ducky Race

Poway Unified School District’s Park Village Elementary School, Monterey Ridge Elementary School, and Willow Grove Elementary School were recently honored by the California Department of Education’s Distinguished Schools Program. This program replaces the California Gold Ribbon Schools Program after a three-year hiatus, and 287 schools were recognized statewide this year. “I am extremely proud of the success of our schools in implementing their best and innovative practices for the benefit of our students,” said Poway Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Marian Kim-Phelps. “From STEM and literacy to the arts and Character Counts, it really is a team effort by staff, students, and our community to create the foundation for college and career readiness.”

Fourth of July events throughout the community are a chance to connect, celebrate, and have fun. A unique North County tradition returns with the 7th Annual Bob Wells Memorial Rubber Ducky Race, held on the lake in Webb Park. The race is a fundraiser for the Rancho Bernardo Business Association (RBBA), first held in 2012 and then combined with Independence Day celebrations for the third annual event. Participants purchase ducks to race across Webb Lake, and they don’t need to be present to win. The owner of the fastest duck will win the $500 prize. Last year’s winner was Tracey Roche. This year’s race will be held Wednesday, July 4 at 1:30 p.m. Buy your own rubber duck at www.rbbaconnect.com or call 858-451-3406. Ducks are $5 each or five for $20. For more on this and other local Independence Day events visit www.spiritofthefourth.org and www.poway.org.

Scholarship Pageant Winners photo by Lisa K Photography

The 56th Miss Poway Scholarship Pageant, sponsored by the Poway Kiwanis Club, has crowned its court. Gabriella Scheffler is Miss Poway, with princesses Dakota Lake Nank and Hannah Nelson. Tessa Tricarico is Miss Teen Poway, with princesses Shelby Westbrook and Isabel Friedl. Miss Junior Teen Poway is Devyn Jones, with princesses Paola Simi and Jenna Oppel. The process was an engaging, challenging experience for the contestants. “The most rewarding part of the pageant process would have to be all of the life skills I learned during rehearsals!” Shelby explained. “Throughout the eight or so weeks that we rehearsed for the pageant, I learned self-defense, interview skills, public speaking skills, and how to be poised and confident.” The court looks forward to representing their communities at fundraisers, parades, and other community events over the upcoming year. “I am most looking forward to meeting new people and making new friends throughout the year,” shared Devyn. Isabel agreed, elaborating, “Each young woman on the court dedicates hundreds of hours of community service over the course of her year of service, and I’m proud to be a part of this important work.”

9th Annual Realtors Softball Tournament The 9th Annual Realtors Softball Tournament will once again benefit the Poway Senior Center and Ed Brown Center for Active Adults. The free, family-friendly event will take place at Rancho Bernardo Community Park on Wednesday, June 20. Opening ceremonies will begin at 9 a.m., and the tournament will run through 6 p.m. “This year’s event will be better than ever,” shared event chair Kevin Hugli. “We will be fielding nine teams and invite the community to come out to root for their favorite, listen to great music, play a variety of kid-centric games, and enjoy offerings from an array of vendors who will be selling food and beverages for a nominal fee.” Activities will include music by DJs Miss Lisa and Miss Dust, hula hoops, a giant Tic Tac Toe board, fingernail painting, and water balloon darts. Contact Shawna Ford at shawna@teamshawna.com to learn more.

National Charity League Class of 2018 The National Charity League (NCL) – Poway Chapter recently held their Class of 2018 Senior Recognition, honoring 14 young women for their seven years of community service accomplishments. Through the motherdaughter organization, the women volunteered with the Poway Senior Center, Poway Library, Valley Elementary School, San Diego Humane Society, and other local groups. “Each of these amazing young ladies has spent their years in NCL working alongside their mothers serving the local community through philanthropic endeavors, taking advantage of leadership opportunities, experiencing cultural diversity, and developing character and integrity so that they may make a positive difference in the world,” shared Deb Devine, president of NCHL, Inc. Poway. The Poway Chapter’s Class of 2018 includes Allison Saeger, Analise Hober, Ashley Pyle, Cammy Schatzlein, Emerson Pomeranz, Emily Ligas, Fiona Boyle, Isabella McHale, Kelsey White, Siera Gants, Alyssa Dick, Kendal Ellenbeck, Lia Redfern, and Olivia Thorson.

Rotary Spring Cleaning The Rotary Club of Poway-Scripps recently spent a morning of service clearing trails at the Kumeyaay-Ipai Interpretive Center. The spring cleaning required clippers, pruners, and enthusiastic Rotary members. Club President Alan Noblitt shared, “We were happy to stay longer and accomplish more but we filled the available dumpsters.” The Kumeyaay-Ipai Interpretive Center is a five-acre Native American cultural and historical site. The center was founded by the Friends of the Kumeyaay, San Pasqual Band of Indians, and City of Poway, and it offers docent-guided educational tours, trails to explore, and artifact and photography exhibits at the Education Center. Poway-Scripps Rotary achieves a number of service projects each year, from clearing trails to sponsoring the annual Poway Days Parade. The club meets every Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Mainstream Bar & Grill. Learn more at www.friendsofthekumeyaay.org and www.powayscrippsrotary.org.

K Sorenson & Jamie Melim

Windermere Homes & Estates K and Jamie are a mother and daughter real estate team who love what they do! They have been successfully working together in business since 2001. Their clients are their #1 priority, and they are recognized as Windermere’s top mother/daughter team. These days, practically every commercial on the radio, on TV, or even in print ads (there is probably one right here in this same magazine, for instance) is from a Realtor stating they can sell your home for the least commission possible. It’s a competitive market around here, and K and Jamie get it. So, first off they want you to know that yes, they do offer flexible commissions. Second, they strongly urge you to consider who you hire to represent you in your real estate sale or home-buying purchase, because not all Realtors are created equally. It can make a huge difference! With a combined total of over 45 years in the real estate business, K and

K and Jamie would love to hear from you and welcome the opportunity to help you accomplish all of your real estate goals.

Testimonial: “K and Jamie were fantastic. Why? Simple – they listened to us and discerned what was most important to us. In addition, selling a house can be pretty stressful. K and Jamie relieved me of all the stress of the selling process because they were very professional, knowledgeable, and responsive. I usually sent emails in the evening, often fairly late, and was often surprised to get immediate responses. Finally, this wasn’t my first rodeo; it was my fifth and my best experience so far. If I ever need a Realtor in the Poway area again, I’ll only need to make one call: to K and Jamie.” – Veme Whidden, Green Valley, Poway seller

Chad Basinger

Windermere Homes & Estates Chad is a native San Diegan, raised in Rancho Bernardo and educated in the Poway Unified School District. He graduated in the top one percent of his high school class. Chad’s desire to excel led to graduating in just over three years with high honors from the University of Califonia at Santa Barbara. In addition to holding his real estate license since 2007, Chad has his CPA (Certified Public Accountant) and CFP (Certified Financial Planner) licenses. Chad has been honored by the San Diego Association of Realtors, earning the Circle of Excellence Award in 2016 and 2017, which is given to the top five percent of agents in all of San Diego County.

Nothing speaks louder than the voice of the consumer… “Chad has helped us sell two homes within the past three years (2014 and 2017). Both times, we sold the homes within the first week and were very pleased with the sale price both times. (He has also helped us buy our most recent home, which proceeded very smoothly). Chad’s greatest virtues are (1) his in-depth knowledge of the house buying/selling process and the markets, (2) his communication skills and pleasant disposition, and (3) his exceptional work ethic. As a result of these attributes, Chad makes the buying/selling process extremely painless and easy. He assembles all of the paperwork and explains, in very plain language, everything that you need to know to understand what’s happening. He provides very insightful advice on every aspect of the transaction, but his low-pressure approach gives us the freedom to ultimately make our own decisions. And we never once found ourselves waiting on Chad to complete a task to move the buying/selling process along; to the contrary, Chad was always one step ahead and, if anything, he had to wait on my wife and I to sign the documents he’d prepared for us! I literally cannot imagine a real estate agent providing a smoother selling/ buying experience than what we’ve experienced with Chad. I have recommended Chad to all my friends and family looking for a real estate agent in San Diego County, and I will continue to do so in the future without hesitation.” – Ben and Alicia S. “We can’t say enough good things about Chad. He was extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and honest. He made us feel like we were the only people he was working with. If we had a question, he had an answer...and he always got back to us quickly. He helped us sell our home and find a new home quickly. We were able to move out of the old home and right into the new one without a problem. The whole process of buying/selling a home can be stressful, so we felt very lucky to find Chad.” – Nick and Meghan C. “Chad was great to work with through this process. It had been many years since we were in need of a Realtor and my how things have changed! Chad’s expertise in other disciplines was a real compliment to his profession as a Realtor. His calm demeanor provided assurance throughout the transaction and allowed us to stay focused on the positive end result!! I would have no qualms in recommending him as your Realtor.” – John and Theresa C. “Chad is knowledgeable, patient, and genuine. After working with high-pressure agents that didn’t listen well, Chad was a breath of fresh air. He truly understood what we were looking for. And he helped us get the perfect place for our family. We love Chad!” – Jacqueline and Angie T. “We liked Chad’s style from the minute we met him. We just wanted someone honest; that was our number-one criteria. It’s sometimes a tough thing to judge in a person, but we went with him and are so happy we did. He helped us navigate the new-to-us world of California real estate and managed to get us into a wonderful home. He was especially good at the negotiations and gave us what turned out to be very good advice on what offers to put in. We would definitely recommend him to anyone looking to buy or sell a house.” – Todd and Laura W. 30 • 92064 MAGAZINE.COM • June | July 2018

REALTOR® | BROKER

David J. Suder, Suder Realty Dr. David J. Suder began his career in optometry, and now he’s dedicated to helping sellers and buyers see success in real estate too. He partners with his wife, Darla Suder, to personally handle every transaction and offer full-service brokerage services. They list homes for only one percent, saving clients about $15,000 to $30,000. David’s interest in the field started in the early ‘80s when he was completing his clinical externship in the Los Angeles area. He started attending investment classes and seminars, and eventually purchased his first investment property in 1994. David and Darla have amassed a portfolio of nearly 170 residential rental units. David became a licensed broker in 2006, and also holds broker designation in two other states. Darla was licensed as a sales associate in 2004, and they formed Suder Realty, Inc. in 2007. “We found our experience and expertise could guide and assist people through a fairly stressful and scary ordeal,” said David. “We found it was truly personally fulfilling to be able to do that.” They use their investment expertise to help San Diegans buy and sell homes, offering them the unique opportunity to have a professional real estate investor assist them when negotiating the sale or purchase of a property. David is especially clever and capable at smoothing out the bumps along the way that buyers and sellers need to overcome. David and Darla spend most of their time engaged in managing, selling, acquiring investment properties, and consulting and helping home sellers and buyers. Sellers are advised on exactly what to do to get the highest price. Buyers are advised on what houses to avoid and exactly what they are getting, because David has actively done flips and rehabs himself and can spot problems up front. He even has personally performed most of the construction on many of his projects, and employed and supervised contractors. With this experience, David and Darla can advise sellers how to prepare their homes to get top dollar, and buyers on what to avoid or what they should require to be repaired in the home they are purchasing. David and Darla have been married since 1986, and have two adult children. They currently reside in Scripps Ranch, and have lived in north Poway, Rancho Peñasquitos, and Clairemont.

In 1993, Cynthia Elizondo earned her MBA in International Business. She has used the knowledge she gained to start several successful entrepreneurial endeavors, but her true passion has always lain with real estate. When she was presented the opportunity to follow that dream, she jumped at the chance and never looked back. Cynthia began working with Halcyon Real Estate Services so that she could help others achieve their dreams of buying and selling the first home, investment property, or simply take the next step on their journey in real estate. Although she helps buyers and sellers throughout San Diego County, Cynthia’s expertise especially lies in the residential areas that make up the Poway Unified School District (PUSD). Growing up in Northern California, Cynthia ultimately found her dream home here in North County, where she raised two children who attended PUSD schools for over 15 years. Utilizing her familiarity with the school district and all it has to offer, Cynthia is able to provide her clients with an extensive knowledge of various schools. Ultimately, she can help clients find a home within the boundaries of the school best suited for them and their children. Following her belief that volunteerism makes for a strong community, Cynthia serves as president of the board of directors for the Poway Senior Center, she is the current chair of the Poway Chamber of Commerce, the current president of the Poway Real Estate Professionals, and volunteers with Soroptimist International of Poway. Most recently, she joined the Sheriff’s Department Senior Volunteer Patrol in their Poway Station. As a devout Catholic, Cynthia is also an active member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, where her husband serves as deacon. In addition to English, Cynthia is also fluent in Spanish and French. And if you speak the language of wine, she is always happy to regale you with stories of growing up in the Napa Valley.

From My Clients: “Cynthia was exceptionally helpful in my company purchasing an adjoining single family house for the expansion of our business. Although the property was not on the market, she contacted the owners and convinced them to consider an offer from us. She successfully handled some sticky negotiation points dealing with the length of time to secure a commercial loan, leading to the acceptance of a final purchase agreement. The sale closed a couple of months ago. I highly recommend Cynthia to anyone interested in having a competent and ethical professional to represent them on real estate deals. The expansion of my business would not have occurred without her leadership, dedication, and hard work.”

THERE IS REALLY NEVER A DULL MOMENT, AND I LOVE HOW CLOSE OUR FAMILY IS!

The Crudale Family Combines Athletics, Volunteering, and Love by BECCA BARR | photo by Alan Smith Photography

P

oway residents Rebecca and Steve Crudale have been together for a long time. In fact, they met on her first day at University of Southern California, where Rebecca was studying for her bachelor’s degree and Steve was earning his master’s. They live an active lifestyle that includes their kids. “We love doing anything outdoors, in the water, and of course on the ice! Each of us skates, but only the kids and Steve play on teams. We love to go to the beach together, boogie board, stand up paddle board, and picnic,” Rebecca stated. Together, they have three children. Wyatt, 14, is finishing his freshman year at Poway High School. He is in Boy Scouts and is busy restoring a 1989 Ford Bronco, which he purchased with his own money. Owen, 12, is a seventh grader at Twin Peaks Middle School and loves playing ice hockey. He will also play tackle football next season. Finally, Charlotte, 10, is a fifth grader at Tierra Bonita Elementary. She also enjoys playing ice hockey, and has been a Girl Scout for six years. Rebecca and Steve are also on the go! Rebecca is a fitness instructor, while Steve works for the U.S. Government. When not working, Steve volunteers as a coach for the kids’ teams and helps teach developing skaters through the “learn to skate” program. Rebecca is a Scout mom. “I have been the den leader for both Owen and Wyatt back when they were in Cub Scouts and am currently on my sixth year leading Charlotte’s Girl Scout troop,” she shared. She has also volunteered for the past four years at Saint Gabriel’s as a Kindergarten Catechist and has led Arts Attack lessons and Running Club for the elementary school. The Crudales love their busy lives. “We are an ever-active family and try to enjoy each day to its absolute fullest! We try to stress to the kids to be as involved as possible and take every opportunity to try new things because you never know what you may really enjoy,” related Rebecca. “There is really never a dull moment, and I love how close our family is!” With three kids, four chickens, three dogs, and a lizard in the house, life will always be full for the Crudales. ¢ 36 • 92064 MAGAZINE.COM • June | July 2018

Sisterly Kylie and Aleah Hazard: Sisters and Friends by BECCA BARR | photos by Alan Smith Photography

M

any little girls love horses, but for sisters Kylie and Aleah Hazard, riding has become a big part of their lives. They attend Ride Above Disability, a therapeutic riding center that teaches recreational horseback riding to people with special needs. Kylie, age 11, was born with Rett Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that occurs in less than 1 in 10,000 children, mostly girls. The horseback riding has helped to develop her core strength and balance. Aleah, age nine, loves to ride as well. The girls live in Poway with their parents, Kimberly and Mike. Both girls have lived in Poway their whole lives. “I like living here because I love the outdoors and all the mountains and trees. It’s really beautiful,” said Kylie. Aleah chimed in, “Everyone is so nice.” The girls are especially fond of Lake Poway and the Sunday farmers market. Kylie is nonverbal, but speaks with her eyes. “I speak not only with my expressions, but with an eye gaze technology, like the one on the TV show Speechless,” she said. She will attend Bernardo Heights Middle School in the fall, and loves music, dancing, hiking, and swimming. “Although she cannot speak and needs assistance with most things, she is so incredibly smart and happy,” shared Kimberly. “She adds so much joy, love, and insight to everyone she touches.” She’s inspired by her sister, who is her best friend. Aleah will be in fourth grade this fall at Willow Grove Elementary. She loves math, writing, drawing, reading, and, of course, horses. “Aleah is a full-on boundless, positive energy,” said Kimberly. “She is a go-getter, super fun and active, and the most compassionate, accepting, and loving individual I have ever met.” She’s inspired by Neil Armstrong, and has dreams to become an astronaut on Mars. She also enjoys cooking, baking, and creating new recipes. Above all, both girls are kind. “My favorite thing about school is the ‘buddy bench’ because it helps kids to make new friends when they feel lonely,” Aleah said. “I have a huge heart and am super accepting of others and love making friends everywhere I go,” added Kylie. “If you see me around town, say hi and smile. And if you have questions about me just ask me and my family and don’t stare. Just be friendly in return and treat me the way you would want to be treated… with love and kindness.” ¢

TALENT IN TRAINING Studio West Offers Music Production Camps for Young Musicians

S

tudio West has been San Diego’s premier recording studio for over 40 years, but recently some new clients have been working there. In 2015, owner Peter Dyson started a series of week-long music production camps for middle and high school students, largely due to his own children’s musical journey. “My daughter plays the harp and my son is a drummer. They both had amazing teachers and great experiences performing with various ensembles, but a recording studio is a different environment that helps musicians grow.” The week-long camps involve instruction in songwriting, production and performance. Many students have a background in music theory and traditional instruments, but it’s not a requirement. “A laptop is now a musical instrument, just like a piano or guitar, but to play it requires the same instruction, discipline, and hard work that’s required for more traditional instruments,” said Dyson.

Performing in a studio is intimidating, but students rise to the occasion. As the lead instructor, San Diego songwriter, performer, and father of two multi-instrumentalist preteen boys Shawn Rohlf explains it, “I’m amazed at the musicianship and work ethic of the kids. If they are this good now, where will they be in 10 years?” At the end of the week, parents and students listen to the songs that students have written and produced over the week. The experience leaves many ready for more. As student Chrysta Hlavacek (17) puts it, “Making music with talented artists is my dream job, and going to Studio West helps me get there.” ¢

POWAY MUSICIANS TOUR AUSTRIA AND THE CZECH REPUBLIC

T

he Poway Symphonette and Poway Community Choir are preparing for a whirlwind European tour this summer. Their musical itinerary will take them through the Czech Republic and Austria, starting with concerts at St. Peter’s Church in Vienna. Next up are performances at Melk Monastery in Melk, Austria, followed by four concerts in Salzburg. Those four concerts are part of the 2018 Salzburg Festival, an annual five-week event first established in 1920. The famous festival includes theatrical and musical productions, with performers from all over the world. The Poway musicians will perform at the Mirabell Garden, Dom Cathedral, and the Mozarteum University Salzburg. Poway Symphonette Artistic Director Ulli Reiner shared that her uncle, Andreas Reiner, taught trumpet and

the youth band at the Mozarteum, and that this trip has special personal meaning for her. When not performing, the Poway musicians will enjoy tours of Prague, Vienna, and Salzburg, focusing on musical history and the cities’ famous landmarks. In addition to international travel, the groups bring high-quality performances to the Poway community – they shared a free preview concert before their tour at Poway Center for the Performing Arts this spring. The symphonette, led by Ulli, and the choir, led by Choral Director Nancy Gray, are both run through Poway Adult School. Both programs are open to new musicians, and interested community members can learn more by contacting Ulli at ureiner@powayusd.net. ¢

AFFAIR

Summer Fun Returns at the San Diego County Fair by LAINEY KRAL photos ©agezinder/123RF.COM

O

ne of San Diego's most beloved traditions has returned. The San Diego County Fair – whose theme this year is How Sweet It Is! – was first established in 1880 and arrived at its current home, the Del Mar Fairgrounds, in 1936. The fair has undergone a number of name changes over the past 138 years, and though the name was changed back to the original San Diego County Fair in 2002, many locals still know it as the Del Mar Fair. The fair offers a wide range of attractions and events, from famously adventurous fair food to dizzying carnival rides. Community members of all ages have the opportunity to showcase their talents as well, with competitions and exhibitions for collections, crafts, wine and beer, fine art, fashion, floral design, and of course, livestock of all shapes and sizes. Summer concerts are another popular draw, and this year includes a variety of artists from Little Big Town to Kansas and more. The fair will run June 1 through July 4, and is closed Mondays and Tuesdays in June. Hours vary from day to day, so check times and find out about more special events at www.sdfair.com. ¢

The Buyer’s Agent by CYNTHIA ELIZONDO

I

n this current age of Google, YouTube, and Pinterest, there has been a marked increase in the number of people who believe they can do everything themselves. I recently saw a cartoon depicting a man performing brain surgery on his wife, while “learning” how to do it on YouTube. This is, of course, a huge exaggeration, but the cartoon is funny, simply because it is not that far off. A clear example of this is in the real estate world. The number of clients trying to represent themselves has increased significantly in the past decade, and I am here to tell you this is a very bad idea. Here are the top five reasons (although there are many more!) you should use a Realtor to represent you as a buyer.

1. It’s free! Since the buyers’ agent’s commission is paid for by the seller, there really is no good reason not to use your own agent. 2. A buyer’s agent looks out for your best interests, whereas the listing agent has a fiduciary responsibility to get the best deal possible for his sellers. To go straight to a listing agent would be like a criminal defendant choosing not to take advantage of a public defender, thinking that the prosecuting attorney can represent him just as well. 3. There is more to negotiating a transaction than just purchase price. Price is only the beginning! There are so many other factors

representatives, escrow agents, pest inspectors, and many other professionals. Your agent has had many years of learning which ones can be trusted, and which ones to avoid. For most people, the purchase of a home is the largest financial transaction they will make in their lives, so to trust their life savings to a Google search simply does not make sense. Use your head, and use a Realtor! ¢

that can make or break a deal, you really need someone on your side, every step of the way. 4. Your Realtor should be an expert in the market area. From being familiar with which neighborhoods are safe or not, to comparing prices with comparable properties, to knowing whether a golf course is about to close, you need an agent who can make sure you don’t overpay for a property, just because it has pretty flooring or nice countertops. 5. Your agent has a complete network of professionals she uses. Throughout the transaction, you will need referrals to home inspectors, mortgage lenders, title
