little over a year ago, I wrote about how our kids were taking music lessons and having fun learning to play and sing various popular songs. They are now into music more than ever before, and a lot has happened in a year. In case you are hearing about this for the first time, Peyton plays guitar and sings. Audrey plays drums and piano, but she insists that drums are her number one. The two of them have come a long way over the last year. For starters, they formed a band and decided to officially name their two-person “brother and sister” duo Call Me Breaux. When we discussed their name choice, both Audrey and Peyton explained that people have called them by their last name (pronounced “bro”) their entire life – especially in sports – so it just makes sense for a band name. When my wife and I realized how much they liked singing and performing, we started to gradually convert our dining room into a small music studio. On any given day, you can often hear some type of music being performed by one or both of them. And every once in a while, something magical happens when they come together and play their growing set of songs. It’s fun to be preparing dinner and hear your kids jamming out in the other room. Who needs a radio when you can get live performances inside your house daily? And although they love to play music for the pure sense of accomplishment, now they’ve experienced the thrill of performing live on stage. Last month, they were invited to play a set at the world-famous Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood. A couple of weeks later, they played the House of Blues in San Diego. This was particularly special for them because quite a few of their friends were at the show. They made it clear to me that having their friends in the audience was the coolest thing ever! It’s a pretty crazy thing to stand in the audience and watch your kids (ages 14 and 12) get up on stage in front of a crowd. As a parent, I experience a wide range of emotions. I’m nervous for them. I’m proud of them. And I’m amazed at their determination and willingness to put themselves out there. So far, they’ve only played cover songs. But recently, they have decided that writing and producing their own original songs is where they want to go. They said that it would be awesome to hear their songs playing on the radio one day, so now they are more determined than ever to make this happen. A special thank you to The Fine Tune Academy for continuing to teach music theory to our kids, to Studio West for providing a great local professional recording atmosphere, and to family and friends (you know who you are) that offer amazing support for their music journey.

THREE-IN-ONE THE CORK AND CRAFT IS A UNIQUE COMBINATION OF BREWERY, WINERY, AND CASUAL FINE DINING by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos provided by The Cork and Craft

T

he Cork and Craft is a unique concept where an in-house brewery and winery share space with a restaurant known for signature dishes such as bacon-wrapped tenderloin and maple leaf duck breast. The Cork and Craft produces beer and wine that is served onsite as well as around the globe. The restaurant is a natural evolution from a small urban winery that opened in 2012. “We began with small pop-up dinners out of our small space and then expanded to offer a full restaurant when the space next door became available. We wanted to provide a dining experience unlike any other you’d expect with a winery/brewery,” revealed Cassie Valenciano, Director of Communications. “Tasting wine or beer alone is one experience, but enjoying them alongside various dishes and experiencing various pairings is the other side of the coin that you can’t get at many other places.” Located in a business park in Rancho Bernardo, many are surprised at the warmth and relaxing vibe they feel when walking through the doors of The Cork and Craft. The atmosphere is one of casual fine dining. “Our restaurant has an industrial feel with the exposed brick walls and light fixtures. Our open-faced kitchen is viewable from the dining room, creating an inviting and welcoming ambiance,” explained Valenciano. When it comes to the beer offerings at The Cork and Craft, there is a core selection which is available for guests year-round. The Cork and Craft also features special releases, such as their first barrel-aged series that they released this year. “We used a stout base beer and filled Pappy Van Winkle barrels that were over 20 years old with that base beer. They’ve been soaking and aging for two years and we released them in a four different bottles to represent each barrel. These bottles are very special and limited, and we hope everyone enjoys them with good company,” stated Valenciano. For those who want an exclusive dining adventure, executive chef Scott Cannon will design a 4- to 10-course tasting created around the unique preferences of the guests. “This is called the Abnormal Experience and is one of our newest offerings,” said Valenciano. As The Cork and Craft has evolved, the brewery/winery/restaurant has been recognized as a must-visit spot in San Diego. In 2016, The Cork and Craft earned the 2016 Business of the Year award for the North San Diego Business Chamber, and owner and CEO Matt De Loach was recognized as one of the top 40 under-40 CEOs in San Diego. That includes integrating a new technology called NumBee, which is a needle-less anesthesia. A small plastic tip simply goes around the tooth, which ultimately prevents your tongue and lip from being numb for hours. Describing the peaceful atmosphere at Heavenly Smiles, Dr. Bita said, “We play soft and relaxing music, and our patients can even listen to their favorite music with headphones. We especially cater to patients with anxiety, and we do our best to make sure that our patients feel at home and want to come back to us.” Heavenly Smiles strongly encourages preventive care and tooth conservation. Dr. Bita shared, “Our intention is to prevent diseases in the mouth and preserve teeth. Our aim has been to raise all patients’ awareness regarding the importance of oral health and its impact on their overall health. Because of this, the majority of our elderly patients have most of their teeth!” Catering to patients of all ages, Heavenly Smiles offers all aspects of general dentistry: laser cleaning, gum treatment, bondings, ceramic crowns, implants, bridges, night guards, gum surgery, and laser gum recontouring. Heavenly Smiles also offers an array of cosmetic treatments such as veneers, Invisalign®, Fast Braces orthodontics, and teeth whitening. Dr. Bita is particularly dedicated to helping the younger generation’s modern dental problems. “Stress and neurosis have become major, common problems among millennials. The single most important reason for anxiety and stress is the new technology like cell phones, iPads, and computers,” explained Dr. Bita. “Most of our young patients have severe wear and cracks on their teeth. Most of them require a night guard, and some need crowns due to teeth fractures.” To provide peace of mind, Dr. Bita even allows her patients to contact her at any time on her personal cell phone. When she is away from the office, Dr. Bita enjoys yoga, reading, music, meditation, and spending time with her family. Offering up some tooth-related wisdom, she exclaimed, “Smiling is a universal language, so keep smiling!” ¢

amden Weisbruch may only be 15 years old, but he is already a seasoned entrepreneur. His San Diego-based start-up, BeatGrid, aims to help small musical artists take the next step in achieving success. “We work to assist these artists in getting their music and themselves off the ground and out into the world. We accommodate all artists at any point in their career, and we are committed to building relationships. From the moment an artist joins BeatGrid, we become a team,” explained Camden. According to Camden, as a start-up, BeatGrid is happy to embrace the everevolving nature of entertainment. Camden is the first to admit that establishing a business is not always easy. “There have been many challenges with BeatGrid. The most significant challenge was accepting that the original platform we were using for the website wasn’t going to fit my vision. We had to make the difficult decision to start over,” Camden said. He credits the support of his parents and the community for helping him overcome obstacles and come up with innovative solutions. This entrepreneurial spirit is fostered not only with Camden and his colleagues at BeatGrid, but also at The School for Entrepreneurship & Technology (SET High) where Camden attends high school. “I really enjoy the community the school offers. Since it’s a smaller school, everyone knows everyone. The staff is great, and they really support the students. Their guidance has definitely helped me grow and succeed,” stated Camden. His favorite class at SET High is called Solving Big Problems. This class focuses on social entrepreneurship, and currently, Camden and his classmates are working on how to help with the issue of homelessness in San Diego. Camden also enjoys math, citing algebra and geometry as two of his favorite subjects. In looking to the future, Camden’s first and foremost goal is for BeatGrid to be the first of many entrepreneurial endeavors. He would also like to attend a college with a great business program, preferably one that has an emphasis in social entrepreneurship. “Overall, I really just hope to make wise choices and be successful,” revealed Camden. ¢

Bench Project Serves Hundreds in Mexico

District Recognizes Teachers and Employees

Local nonprofit Sustainable Surplus was recently tasked with finding a new home for 150 used bus stop benches from the City of San Diego. The benches, which were headed to Miramar Landfill, are made of difficult-to-recycle and non-decomposing fiberglass material. When no use was found for the benches in San Diego, Sustainable Surplus CEO Sue Prelozni reached out to Adolfo Delgado, Binational Coalition of Nonprofits (BCN) partner and Executive Director of the Comité Binacional Unidos por la Niñez (CBUN) in Mexico. With Adolfo’s help, the benches were refurbished, repurposed, and distributed to several cities throughout Mexico, where they will be used in parks, churches, schools, and community centers. BCN was founded in 2017 to facilitate the handling of donated items that cannot be reused or repurposed locally, resulting in at least 12 cross-border donations in the past year. Rob Schupp, Director of Marketing and Communications for the Metropolitan Transit System, said, “This is a great example of agencies coming together to find solutions that are good for the planet.” For more information visit www. sustainablesurplus.org.

Valley Elementary School special education instructor Ana Collins was recently selected as one of the three 2018 Poway Unified School District (PUSD) Teachers of the Year. A committee of district and site representatives selected the PUSD Teachers of the Year based on criteria which included: innovations inside the classroom, contributions to their schools and the district, and commitment to their students. Katie Wu of Westview High School and Shantel Raquel of Del Sur Elementary School were the other two Teachers of the Year. Ana is a resource specialist for Transitional Kindergarten through fifth grade and is a bilingual instructor for the district’s only Spanish immersion program. She’s able to identify learning disabilities in the bilingual student population and develop special education resources for all students receiving academic instruction in Spanish. Her work has a significant positive impact not only on test scores but on student confidence. “Teaching is a profession of both the heart and mind,” said Superintendent Dr. Marian Kim-Phelps. “These teachers are ‘all-in’ when it comes to making a difference in our students’ lives. They recognize it’s not just academics, but meeting students’ social, emotional, and mental health needs that contributes to our students’ overall success. I congratulate them on this honor, and I am thrilled they are representing #TeamPUSD.” The district also recognized two 2018 Classified Employees of the Year: Michele Cass, Administrative Assistant for Alternative Programs at the Poway Twin Peaks center, and Shelley Porter, Library Media Technician at Sunset Hills Elementary School. Beyond her administrative support role, Michele organizes the PUSD Adopt-AFamily Program, supports the Youth in Transition program, and takes leadership roles to organize summer school and summer graduation. Her colleagues share she always goes above and beyond with a passion for the students she serves.

The show has four divisions: Horticulture, featuring plants that grow well locally; Designs, which explore how plant material can be incorporated into homes; Special Exhibits, featuring educational displays; and Creative Crafts, which includes photography. The photography category was a new – and very popular – addition last year. The accompanying plant sale is the club’s largest of the year and includes succulent dish gardens and seedlings grown by the Poway Valley Youth Garden Club. The club’s artisan group also provides garden-related craft items for sale. Club members are on-hand to give advice on how to care for your new plants. SWIM AND TENNIS CAMPS Rancho Arbolitos swim and tennis camp runs from June 18 through Aug. 17. A typical camp goes from Monday through Friday, but campers can attend for one or more days a week at a daily rate. “Campers can also choose tennis only as opposed to swim and tennis. Campers play tennis from 9 to 11 a.m., have a snack, and then head to the pool, where they have free play and then organized group swim lessons. “Children are

divided by age and ability. We work with beginners to advanced swimmers and players by giving them a workout that will suit their needs and take them to the next level. They will work on technique, as well as play games and win prizes on the court and in the pool.” Catalin Chira, the director of the Chira Tennis Academy at Rancho Arbolitos, and his team of coaches run the tennis portion of the summer camp. Catalin is a certified tennis professional who has coached many high-level players over the course of his 20-year coaching career. He has been named Coach of the Year numerous times.

OUTPOST SUMMER CAMPS

N

ow more than ever, children need to be away from their devices for extended periods of time, and there is nothing better than a summer day-camp experience to make this a reality. Outpost Summer Camps was founded in 2001 and serves over 1,500 children every summer, completely outdoors and screen-free. The Outpost experience has three pillars that parents have loved for over 15 summers: door-to-door transportation, traditional camp activities (think MUD!), and exceptional, well-trained staff that ensure a quality experience for each child. Outpost is open to children ages 3 to 14, and according to Owner/Director Stuart Jones, “Each of our camps has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” The three-week sessions are what make Outpost so unique. Stuart explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” Another way the camps stand out is with their commitment to safety. Outpost Summer Camps has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association since inception and operates under permit from the County of San Diego as an Organized Camp. Stuart and his wife Kelly both have graduate degrees in psychology and bring years of long-term child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested 8 to 10 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. They will be lead by brilliant UC San Diego engineering majors who want to help raise the next generation of innovators. With Robolink, campers will learn the magic of programming. They will use code to make motors move, navigate through mazes, orchestrate robot battles, and move propellers to make flight happen. Your young genius will learn to work with nuts and bolts, screws and drivers, circuit boards, electrical wires, and more. They will collaborate with other brilliant students to solve challenges and obstacle courses, learn teamwork and problem solving. At the end of it all, they’ll finish with a capstone project where they build their own robot or compete in a sweet tournament. Robolink wants your kids to be successful. They have been a leading STEM center (science, technology, engineering, and math) in San Diego for five years. Their high-tech learning center is in the heart of Sorrento Valley and 4S Ranch, fully equipped with WiFi, robots, drones, circuit boards, and all kinds of gadgets and gizmos that will no-doubt engage and enthrall campers of all ages and skills. Half-day camps are regularly $295 and full-day camps are $495; early birds can get 20 percent off if you sign up by April or 10 percent off by May. So, come spend a week with Robolink – or stay longer! Either way, it’s going to be awesome. To learn more call 858-876-5123 or visit www.Robolink.com/ZCode. ¢

his summer, Southern California Ballet, the premier dance training institute serving Poway and North County San Diego, will be offering five weeks of summer camp for children ages four and older. According to Toby Batley, Co-Artistic Director for Southern California Ballet, the dance camps promote health and well-being and provide a great way to build kids’ confidence and express their creativity. “Week-long dance camps always give young dancers the chance to springboard their training and make great advances,” Batley said. A Discover Dance camp will be offered to children ages four to nine. For dancers 10 years and older, a more concentrated training program called Summer Intensives will be available. “We teach young children the joy of movement through classical ballet and other forms of dance,” Batley shared. “Our older intensives give students the chance and time to focus and perfect what they have been working on throughout the year.” This year, Batley is excited to announce that the intensive camps will be centered around the classical ballet Cinderella. He assured that the camps will include other genres of dance as well. “It is a balance of athleticism and artistry,” said Batley. “The camps are fun!” Southern California Ballet is unique in its high level of training provided by expert teachers who have experience from all around the world. Both Batley and his counterpart, Co-Artistic Director Martha Leebolt, are award-winning principal dancers from the United Kingdom. HOME IMPROVEMENT PROFILE

TRITON WATER RENEWAL Providing Clean, Safe Pool Water by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photos by Heather Elise Photography

A

s a Southern California native, Jeff Henneforth realizes the importance of conserving water. “Saving water should always be something we are all striving for,” said Jeff, who along with his wife, Rachel, is a Poway High School alumnus. Years ago, when Jeff needed the pump replaced for his swimming pool, water preservation (and cleanliness) took on a whole new meaning. “The company that installed our new pump recommended a company that did reverse osmosis for pools,” recalled Jeff. “I’ve owned homes with pools in Texas, Nevada, and California, and I’ve always had to drain or half-drain the pool at some point to try and get better water. Seeing a trailer that could filter my pool water and utilize a unique software system that allowed control of the trailer remotely was very exciting and just made sense. This is a great service and a new industry.” And with that, Jeff started Triton Water Renewal, a company that cleans pool water by using a mobile reverse osmosis system, helping to save water, improve water quality, and maintain the life of pool plaster and equipment. “We can process 40,000 gallons a day remotely with a Cummings generator providing power to the pumps, all enclosed in a 16-foot trailer,” explained Jeff. “We use a powerful UV light (killing any living bacteria) and a reverse osmosis filtration system to clean the water.” Jeff explained that the reverse osmosis process can save up to 85 to 90 percent of customers’ existing pool water. “If you have a 20,000-gallon pool and can save 17,000 of

54 • 92064 MAGAZINE.COM • April | May 2018

those gallons instead of dumping it down a drain, that’s a win for everyone,” said Jeff. In addition to saving water, Triton Water Renewal improves the quality of pool water. “In Southern California, we get the end of the Colorado River water. Usually this means high calcium, salt, pesticides, chloramines, and other runoff type by-products in our water supply,” Jeff said. “This is the water we fill our pools with and then we add a lot of chlorine, salt, and tablets to the water to keep the algae at bay.” Over time, the chemicals added to our pools burn off and leave behind solids in the water molecules known as Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), which, Jeff explained, make the water extremely hard and require the use of even more chemicals to keep the water clear. “The water that we produce is 100 percent drinkable,” said Jeff. “We are currently in the process of getting our FEMA accreditation to be a pure water provider in the event of natural disasters.” An added benefit to using Triton Water Renewal’s system is extending the life of the pool and its equipment. “The number one killer in pool equipment, especially heaters, is calcification,” Jeff stated. “Cleaning the water with filtration and maintaining healthy calcium and TDS levels in the water keeps all kinds of problems at bay and provides clean, safe pool water with the minimum amount of added chemicals.” “This is a new and exciting service for people who swim a lot and know good pools versus bad ones,” said Jeff. “We are excited to be on the ground floor of this new industry!” ¢

Disclose, Disclose, Disclose! by CYNTHIA ELIZONDO

I

recently heard of a case in which a local home seller was forced to buy back the house he had just sold to a buyer, because the buyers were upset to discover there is a dog in the neighborhood that barks during the day, creating a noise annoyance. (Yes, you read that right–the buyers sued because there is a barking dog in the neighborhood!) The buyers were able to win this case because the sellers had not checked off the box on their sellers’ disclosures for “neighborhood noise problems or other nuisances.” As crazy as this case seems, it is the perfect example of why it is so important for sellers to disclose everything.

In Poway, this means that residents in (and around) Candy Cane Lane must disclose that there is a significant traffic and parking problem in the neighborhood in December. Homes within walking distance of Poway High School must disclose that the football games can cause traffic and noise problems, and band practice can be a “noise nuisance.” And pretty much every neighborhood in Poway has a barking dog in it, so check that box! I have sellers call me every time I send them these disclosure forms whether they need to disclose some random fact about their house. My answer is always the same: “If you have to ask, the answer is yes.” The

fear, of course, is that if the buyers know, they may decide to back out. On the plus side, you are also able to disclose what was done to fix or alleviate the problems. In the long run, however, it is much better to find out that the buyer can’t live with something during escrow, rather than after close. The financial repercussions are simply too great to gamble. Bottom line: when in doubt, write it out! ¢

Kensington to University Heights For less intense bicyclists who want to ride through a trendy location, Adams Ave. is the perfect path. With dozens of coffee shops, restaurants, and breweries, this path offers plenty of inviting pit stops and minimal traffic for an easy trip.

Balboa Park Balboa Park offers five gateways, each with several trails perfect for biking or walking. The Balboa Park paths are ideal for admiring the park’s beauty or for stopping at one of the park’s many museums.

Coronado This 24-mile path is almost a full loop, beginning in Coronado and ending in Seaport Village. While you can’t bike on the Coronado Bridge, you can take the ferry to complete the entire path. This path offers ocean views and a relatively flat, easy ride for anyone.

HIGHWAY 56 BIKE PATH

SAN LUIS REY RIVER TRAIL

Torrey Pines to Rancho Peñasquitos This 10-mile bike path begins at Torrey Pines State Reserve and ends in Rancho Peñasquitos. This is the perfect path for intermediate to advanced cyclists looking to break a sweat and enjoy the views along the way.

Oceanside to Guajome Regional Park This paved, seven-mile path allows for an easy ride for all types of bicyclists and pedestrians. The open space and beautiful views make it a great route to take on a weekend afternoon. ¢

CLOSER TO HOME: LAKE HODGES SUSPENSION BRIDGE Escondido This stressed, ribbon-style bridge is nearly 1,000 feet long and overlooks Lake Hodges in Escondido. The bridge welcomes bicyclists and pedestrians and offers beautiful scenery. Perfect for kids and beginners.
