ith all of the recent rain and cold weather, I can’t believe we are finally thinking about summer! I’ve always loved summer. As a kid, I would count the days until school was out. It still seems like yesterday. As parents, the mere concept of summer can be a bit overwhelming. Several months of kids at home? What in the heck are they going to do every day? How am I going to pull this off? For these reasons, we have been publishing our popular Annual Summer Camp Guide for the past five years. Although we had no idea of how popular these issues were going to become, this year I am proud to present you with the largest Annual Summer Camp Guide (see page 36) that we’ve published. It is bigger and better than ever! It includes tons of options to keep your youngster occupied during the long break. Grab a cup of tea (or a glass of wine), kick up your feet, and take a peek at the variety of camps being offered this summer. Be sure to reserve your kid’s spot early this year, as summer camps are in high demand and things fill up quickly. And most importantly, tell them you saw their camp in 92064 Magazine!

S
arina Krishnan, a junior at the Bishop’s School in La Jolla, relishes the constant variety of experiences she has from both her urban-based school and her more rural home life in Poway. Sarina explained, “I enjoy living among nature, animals, and a somewhat slow-paced life; it’s a nice change from the hectic schedule involved in attending my school. I have been exposed to a wide variety of cultures, religions, races, and ethnicities, and I am constantly surrounded by new people and new ideas.” Citing her school’s sense of inclusiveness for influencing her own civic-mindedness, Sarina said, “I believe my school has cultivated a remarkable sense of acceptance and kindness. I feel very comfortable speaking with my teachers and peers on a variety of current events, and as a result my interest in public policy and civics has grown immensely.” In fact, Sarina was the only high school student doing an internship at former Congressman Darrell Issa’s office, and she helped work on Diane Harkey’s congressional campaign. Fully embracing her desire to provide a better world for all resulted in Sarina’s founding her own nonprofit organization, Pathways to Assimilation. Its aim is to assist newly arrived refugees and immigrants with acclimating to the United States. Sarina exclaimed, “I’ve read so much in the news about the major reductions in government funding to help these newly arrived refugees and immigrants, and that motivated me to do something to help these underserved groups.” Her nonprofit organization helps immigrants ultimately achieve economic sufficiency in numerous ways: English language lessons, academic tutoring, assistance in applying for a driver’s license, and vocational skill training (i.e., nursing, starting one’s own ethnic catering business, working in the police department, etc.) Sarina added, “The intent is to provide refugees with programs and opportunities to fulfill their American dreams.” An avid piano player since the age of six, Sarina proclaimed, “I often tutor students with special needs in music theory, so they too can experience the joys of music.” In the future, Sarina hopes to either work for the U.S. State Department, or for one of the specialized agencies in the United Nations. She declared, “Regardless of my specific career choice, I am sure it will revolve around making the community a more cohesive, peaceful place for everyone to enjoy.”

LOCAL NONPROFIT GIVES A NEW LEASH ON LIFE TO THOSE IN NEED
T
ender Loving Canines Assistance Dogs (TLCAD) has spent 20 years changing lives. The Rancho Bernardo-based nonprofit organization trains and provides service dogs throughout San Diego County and Ione, CA. Three programs form the heart of TLCAD’s mission. At Ease service dogs help service members and veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, or mobility limitations. Leash-On-Life service dogs help individuals with autism. “We also place service dogs as facility dogs and courthouse facility dogs that work with populations in need,”
14 • 92064 MAGAZINE.COM • April | May 2019
explained Development Director Fara Khaleeli. The third program, Prisoners Overcoming Obstacles & Creating Hope (POOCH), is run through correctional facilities in San Diego and Ione, CA. With support from TLCAD volunteers, inmates care for and train future service dogs. “Our mission is to transform lives with service dogs, and each dog starts transforming lives as soon as they enter the training program and continue for the rest of their doggie life,” Fara said. “We are also able to rehabilitate incarcerated populations by training incarcerated individuals to utilize positive reinforcement to
train service dogs for those in need.” TLCAD is open to volunteers and supporters. “We have some volunteers that enter the correctional facilities to assist with training classes,” Fara said. “There is also a need for volunteers that help with office tasks and for event support.” The organization also hosts regular fundraising events, like recent events at Protector Brewery in Miramar and Culture Brewery in Solana Beach. Learn more about new events, how to volunteer, and how to apply for a service dog at www.tenderlovingcanines.org.

POWEGIAN GIFTS GRAND PIANO TO FRIENDS OF THE RB LIBRARY by KELLEY GUSICH
I
n January 1999, Poway resident Margaret Briggerman sent her grand piano on loan to the RB Library. This allowed the Friends of the RB Library to inaugurate their Chamber Concert series, which is now in its 21st year. At the January 30, 2019 concert, featuring the Boston-based Neave Piano Trio, Ms. Briggerman turned ownership of the piano over to the Friends of the RB Library. Harvey Levine, Concert Director for the Friends, accepted the piano and presented a Certificate of Appreciation for the gift and the 20-year loan. Over this 20-year period, the RB Library has gained a reputation for presenting very high quality small-ensemble performances of classical and jazz programs. The appreciation concert completely filled the 135-seat community room. Upcoming concerts include The Jazz Duo of Holly Hoffman, flute, and Mike Wolford, piano, on Wednesday, April 24 at 6:15 p.m. Upcoming Discovery Concert Series shows are the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra string concert on Saturday, April 13 at 3 p.m.
The Wednesday evening concerts run 75 minutes and are presented free of charge as a community service. The Discovery Series serves to educate the public about various music forms and to expand the opportunity for local musicians to perform and provide insights to their music. Free will donations are encouraged to defray the cost of the professional musicians. Learn more at www.friendsoftheranchobernardolibrary.org.

tudio West has been San Diego’s premier recording studio for over 40 years, but recently some new clients have been working there. In 2015, owner Peter Dyson started a series of week-long music production camps for middle and high school students, largely due to his own children’s musical journey. “My daughter plays the harp and my son is a drummer. They both had amazing teachers and great experiences performing with various ensembles, but a recording studio is a different environment that helps musicians grow.” The week-long camps involve instruction in songwriting, production and performance. Many students have a background in music theory and traditional instruments, but it’s not a requirement. “A laptop is now a musical instrument, just like a piano or guitar, but to play it requires the same instruction, discipline, and hard work that’s required for more traditional instruments,” said Dyson.
Performing in a studio is intimidating, but students rise to the occasion. As the lead instructor, San Diego songwriter, performer, and father of two multi-instrumentalist preteen boys Shawn Rohlf explains it, “I’m amazed at the musicianship and work ethic of the kids. If they are this good now, where will they be in 10 years?” At the end of the week, parents and students listen to the songs that students have written and produced over the week. The experience leaves many ready for more. As student Chrysta Hlavacek (17) puts it, “Making music with talented artists is my dream job, and going to Studio West helps me get there.”

A Talk With
Dr. Nelson Y. Howard What Patients Need to be Aware of When Choosing a Dentist by DR. NELSON Y. HOWARD
I
n today’s ever demanding world of knowledge and increased consumer awareness, especially in the healthcare field, more people are looking for advanced levels of expertise in the individuals they choose to take care of themselves and their family and friends. There is no better compliment than to have another person in our practice refer someone to our office because of the trust they have in us as well as the precise nature of what we do and the outstanding results we achieve for everyone. That has been the way my two very distinctive dental offices have flourished over the last 33 years. So many dentists nowadays advertise they do everything in their own offices and falsely offer discounted rates or procedure “specials” with conditions to attract new patients to their offices. Furthermore, they advertise themselves to be the “Best” at something or were voted the “Best” by some non-validated organization. Consumers need to be aware that not all dentists practice the same type of dentistry, and cut-rate dentistry is just that, with the results reflecting that as well. In my offices, a significant amount of dentistry we perform is having to redo other dentists’ poor workmanship. This is very upsetting when the patient was misled by the dentist and their lack of skills to treat them properly. A dentist’s credentials and experience should also be checked by any prospective patient, especially in the area of cosmetic dentistry. There’s a saying I have come up with that “every dentist claims to be a cosmetic dentist but not every dentist knows cosmetic dentistry.” Just because a dentist says they do cosmetic dentistry doesn’t make it cosmetic dentistry. I am one of approximately 400 dentists worldwide who has earned the distinction of being an Accredited Member of the prestigious American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Many people are demanding this advanced level of dentistry now more than ever, especially after having been mistreated by someone who claims to have 26 • 92064 MAGAZINE.COM • April | May 2019
qualifications and skills that cannot be validated. Many dentists simply do not address functional dental issues nor have proper training and knowledge in this area. I have seen that inferior results often break down sooner in someone’s mouth because of a lack of understanding by the dentist in how a person’s mouth functions, especially during chewing. My offices focus on the art and science of comprehensive dentistry. My extensive credentials, experience, knowledge, and training in all these disciplines are for the benefit of my patients. There is a so-called “Teeth in a Day” trend where patients are constantly being misled into believing they walk into a dental office and get “new” teeth the same day when they simply do not. Many of these places remove perfectly healthy teeth as part of the process. I do not perform every dental procedure as so many dentists claim to do nowadays, mostly because they fear losing patient revenues all the while performing substandard care for their patients. I refer my patients to specialists when needed. Patients are appreciative of this, knowing they will be receiving the best care. I believe that any dentist needs to know the limits of what they are able to do for their patients before they start treatment. In summary, it is important that today’s consumers do their proper research when selecting a dentist. Many of my patients come to me for a second opinion when something is not feeling right only to be told what they already know, that the dentistry they recently had done is not correct and needs to unfortunately be redone to correct the problems. If you are having a dental concern, experiencing an ongoing problem from recently completed dental care, want a second opinion, or would like to become a patient in my office, please call either of my offices that is most convenient for you for a complimentary consultation. For more information about myself or my offices, please visit my website at www.nyhowarddds.com.

Inspiring Connections
DIAMOND GATEWAY WOMEN’S ORGANIZATION CELEBRATES 20 YEARS photo by PortrArt Creations
S
ince its founding in 1998, Diamond Gateway Women’s Organization (DGWO) has provided a warm welcome and close-knit community for women in Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, Poway, and Scripps Ranch. “To be part of an organization that is collectively kind and fun while giving so much back to their community is really cool and inspiring,” shared Nora Nido, DGWO President. Nora joined the organization in 2015 after being invited to a meeting by a client. “Everyone was so nice, and I enjoyed it so much I kept going!” Originally formed as a continuation of Welcome Wagon when the older group disbanded, DGWO meets every month in Rancho Peñasquitos for community service, educational speakers, and
connecting with friends. “It has evolved into meetings with a variety of programs such as guest speakers on current events and topics covering everything from health to being a private investigator or hall of fame songwriter,” Nora said. “Others included authors, theater performers, musicians, or dancers.” DGWO members have also formed spinoff groups for games, crafting, gardening, and attending plays or movies. DGWO’s recent spring luncheon, the organization’s primary fundraiser each year, benefited DGWO’s work for Friends and Family Community Connection, Operation America Cares, and Honor Flight. DGWO also supports San Diego Food Bank and America Cares. For more about membership contact Roxie Stalter at 858-538-8842.

C
alifornia All-Stars Cheer (CAS) began its story 18 years ago in North County San Diego. With more than 1,000 athletes throughout six locations – San Marcos, the Bay Area, Las Vegas, Ventura, Ontario, and Scottsdale, AZ – CAS has worked its way to offering the most competitive cheer program in the state of California, gaining international recognition along the way as 12-time World Champions. “All-Stars encompasses all the fun aspects about cheerleading, including dance, stunts, bonding with friends, and gaining confidence and skill through performances. Building the children from the inside out is what we do, because we focus on them as
a whole,” said Tannaz Kirichkow, Owner of CAS. “Our goal is to make sure our kids gain a strong sense of self confidence that will carry on for the rest of their lives.” CAS offers tumbling camps in the summer, which focus on tumbling techniques for beginners, intermediate, and advanced levels. The camps can last two or three days and are three hours per day. Camps are open to both boys and girls. CAS provides a sense of work ethic and life lessons in each of its classes, including a sense of bonding and camaraderie for cheerleaders who travel to national and international competitions. “People come to California All-Stars for top-quality coaching and family atmosphere,”
explained Tannaz. “Life lessons, core values, and athletic excellence come hand-inhand. We love to see our kids succeed on and off the floor!” CAS’s list of awards and recognitions includes 400 National Titles, Grand Champions, Program Champions, Innovative Choreography Awards, Judges Choice Awards, Paid Bids to the USASF Cheerleading Worlds, 2009 through 2013 World Champions, IALC Champions, 2010 through 2014 NCA National Champions, three silver medals at the 2008 Cheerleading Worlds, and 2013 Summit Champions. Marilee Chaney of North County said, “CAS is about positive attitudes. From the ‘can do’ approach toward all athletes to seeing the staff enthusiastically hug a cheerleader when she gets a new tumbling skill – from the beginning, the message has been ‘you are capable, and you are welcome here.’” With a trained and energetic staff, spacious gym, and professional instruction, CAS has something for every budding cheerleader out there! Tryouts for new teams will be held May 13, 14, and 15. To learn more about camps, classes, and clinics at CAS, visit www.CaliforniaAllStars.com/SanMarcos.

OUTPOST SUMMER CAMPS
N
ow more than ever, children need to be away from their devices for extended periods of time, and there is nothing better than a summer day camp experience to make this a reality. Outpost Summer Camps was founded in 2001 and serves over 1,500 children every summer, completely outdoors and screen-free. The Outpost experience has three pillars that parents have loved for over 15 summers: “old-fashioned” camp activities (think MUD!), door-to-door transportation for most families, and exceptional, well-trained staff that ensure a quality experience for each child. Outpost is open to children ages 3 to 14, and according to Owner/Director Stuart Jones, “Each of our camps has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” The three-week sessions are what make Outpost so unique. Stuart explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” Another way the camps stand out is with their commitment to safety. Outpost Summer Camps has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association since inception and operates under permit from the County of San Diego as an Organized Camp. Stuart and his wife Kelly, a clinical psychologist, bring years of child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested 8 to 10 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. SUMMER CAMP GUIDE
CODEREV KIDS
W
ith the growing popularity of STEAM programs in schools, many parents are turning to technology camps to keep their students entertained and engaged during summer months. CodeREV Kids is one of Southern California’s fastest growing tech camps, and according to Founder Evan Boorman, offers the only standards-aligned summer tech program that focuses on math and science. Evan explained, “I started CodeREV to answer the question so many students have: ‘Why? Why should I learn math, science, or engineering?’ In our project-based classes and curriculum, students automatically answer these questions for themselves, since they need to learn these topic areas to create the fun and amazing projects they build and code in camp.” CodeREV offers a variety of classes for kids ages 6 to 14 to appeal to all technology-based interests. Its MathCraft program uses the popular video game Minecraft to teach math, and its Adventures in Programming class covers 3D game design. Its most popular option, Minecraft Level Design & Engineering, applies STEAM concepts to building amazing contraptions inside Minecraft. With a total of 10 different classes to choose from, there is something for everyone at CodeREV. Evan has been teaching STEAM for 17 years, has created education software, and has started education technology companies. Evan’s partner, Chief Education Innovation Officer John Stuppy, Ph.D., holds a Master’s degree in Education Technology from Stanford, a Ph.D. in Education Reform from UCLA, and has been teaching and creating curriculum for coding aligned with math for three decades. Evan and John believe that their combined 50 years of experience, coupled with the most innovative teaching approaches in technology, are critical to bringing coding into mainstream education, and to get students excited about using math and science. Selling to the Millennial Buyer
A
few years ago, we had not seen much activity from millennials in the real estate markets; however, analysts from Realtor.com are predicting that is about to change in a big way. As millennials are getting older, getting married, and their household incomes are increasing, they are now looking to buy their first homes or move up to larger homes in middle and upper-middle class neighborhoods like those found in Poway. Predictions are that millennials will represent as much as 45% of mortgages in 2019, compared to 37% for Generation Xers and 17% for baby boomers. This is great news for the older generations that are downsizing and moving out of the area, as it provides ready buyers for their homes. That being said, the typical millennial buyer can be very picky. The size of the home is
not as important as the condition. They do not want to have to do any work before moving in. This means that walls need to be freshly painted, floor coverings need to be replaced, and kitchens and bathrooms need to be updated. In addition, millennials are online all the time. They are used to immediate gratification and finding what they want through the internet. They also like lots of photos, so they can see exactly what they are getting, long before they walk in the door. Even more, they like videos, so virtual and interactive tours are very important. Finally, millennials lead very active lifestyles, and do not want to spend a lot of

time working on their homes. They want easy, low-maintenance, energy-efficient, and hightech. This means that homes with solar panels, smart home devices, and natural-looking turf will appeal to them more than homes without these upgrades. If you are planning to sell your home soon, contact a Realtor now to get the best advice on which of these upgrades will appeal to the millennials that will most likely be your target market.
