FROM THE PUBLISHER VO L . 9, N O. 5 TM
Please Support Local Businesses
I
’ve published community magazines for 11 years. And my father has been in the publishing industry his entire life. As a junior in high school, I remember the night that the United States started bombing military targets in Iraq and Kuwait. I went with my dad after midnight down to the local newspaper where he worked. I literally watched him order the press to be stopped, scrap the originally planned cover story, and print a new cover page telling its readers that America Is At War! It was one of the first times that I began to realize how the media worked and the impact that it has in our society. I was proud to get a glimpse behind the curtain. While we didn’t have a “stop the press” moment here at ZCode once our state and local communities began being ordered to shut down all nonessential businesses and shelter-in-place, it has certainly turned our small business community upside down. As a business owner, one must prepare for slow times and potential economic downturns – it comes with the responsibilities of entrepreneurship. However, a small business being prepared for all of its customers to vanish and immediately shut their business down is asking the impossible. How does one prepare for that? It’s never happened before. Although I understand that the shelter-in-place ordinance is necessary for the safety of everyone, my heart goes out to all of our advertising participants (that financially make this magazine possible) and other local community business owners. Most of them have shut down their business and made the difficult decision to furlough their employees – they didn’t have a choice. At this time, uncertainty as to when they will be allowed to open back up is the primary concern. Another concern is that when businesses are finally allowed to operate again, will the customers return fast enough to make it financially feasible to do so? One thing is for certain. We are all in this together. It’s going to take dedication and a willingness from the community to help small businesses get back on their feet. Businesses will need their customers back. It will take revenue for these businesses to be able to bring their employees back. WE CAN ALL HELP! If you are able to assist, I ask that you consider making a donation to local businesses that affect your life. Twenty dollars, 50 dollars, 100 dollars or more – it all adds up. Maybe it’s a local restaurant... Perhaps a local dentist or orthodontist... Consider your hair stylist, your child’s gym or dance studio, or even this magazine. Let the local businesses in your life know that you are there for them, appreciate them, and are willing to assist. We don’t know how the world will be after this crisis is over. But coming together as a community and supporting each other gives every business the best chance to land on their feet and continue providing the services and products that make our town so special. Stay healthy 92064 XXXXXreaders! readers!

hese three sophomores at Del Norte High School, twins Lola and Sophie Bulkin and their friend Ellie Zeiler, created their own Instagram account last year, called the Together As One (TGAO) movement, after all three experienced prejudiced behavior from their fellow students. The site expanded into a school club and nonprofit organization, and Lola, Sophie, and Ellie have even been on a Channel 8 televised community meeting panel in which they promoted their TGAO mission. Lola said, “We thought that creating a positive and inclusive platform to spread awareness to the community would be an effective way to combat any growing hate.” Ellie shared, “By starting TGAO, we created an outlet for teens to hear other people’s stories, no matter their culture, lifestyle, or religion.” The TGAO club meets at school twice a month, and the students are encouraged to share their ideas and experiences in a supportive environment. The attendees also do such activities as make appreciation cards and create and hang posters throughout the campus. About a month after initially forming TGAO, the Chabad of Poway shooting incident took place, which affected the girls deeply as each had
ties to the temple – all three had attended its preschool. Through their TGAO platform, the girls made and sold t-shirts to raise funds for the Chabad of Poway victims. Sophie elaborated, “The t-shirts represented a message of unity, kindness, and acceptance. The support of our community showed how impactful one person’s actions could be, and how we must all stand together and embrace each other’s differences.” The girls are now working toward bringing their club and its values to other San Diego area schools, starting with Poway High School. Lola revealed, “Ultimately, we hope to spread our club to every Poway Unified School District high school and continue to grow as a movement.” Ellie said, “We’d also love to work with elementary and middle schools so we can reach kids before they get to high school, which seems to be when a lot more prejudice comes out.” Another TGAO endeavor the girls are undertaking is improving the Instagram platform by adding more videos featuring other students. Sophie exclaimed, “We are trying to express the cultural differences in our community by interviewing kids from both our school and other schools.” Ellie added, “It takes a lot of courage to tell your story and put yourself out there but once you do, you realize so many other people can relate.” When they’re not involved with TGAO, each girl keeps busy with various pursuits. Ellie volunteers by teaching golf at the Special Olympics, Lola plays soccer for her high school and for Force FC, and Sophie also plays soccer for her high school and takes rowing classes. All three plan to attend college and to continue dedicating their time to the TGAO movement for many years to come. Follow Together As One on Instagram @tgaomovement. ¢

Hawaiian FRESH SEAFOOD
The Spirit of Hawaii Can Be Found Right Here in San Diego by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos provided by Hawaiian Fresh Seafood
H
awaiian Fresh Seafood, Inc. is a top seafood distributor and market that offers fresh seafood products to more than 2,000 customers, including top chefs across the country. Hawaiian Fresh Seafood owns and operates a fleet of three longline tuna fishing vessels that supply their wholesale division, as well as their market. This allows Frank Porcelli, owner of Hawaiian Fresh Seafood, and his team to oversee and control the entire process from start to finish. “Our customers appreciate this because they know where their seafood is coming from. Traceability is so important these days,” explained Porcelli. Customers who enter the Hawaiian Fresh Seafood market will see display cases filled with a variety of fresh fish fillets and loins, as well as an assortment of freshly made poke. According to Porcelli, customers can purchase poke by the pound or in a poke bowl with either brown or white rice. “We’re especially known for our fresh ahi,” revealed Porcelli. Porcelli originally opened Hawaiian Fresh Seafood in Honolulu in 2006. A Poway High School graduate, he has deep roots in the local community, as well as in Hawaii. “I grew up in Poway and enlisted in the Navy right out of high school. I was on the USS Midway CV-41 during the Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm). I moved to Hawaii in 2002, and a few years later, I started Hawaiian Fresh Seafood,” said Porcelli. When he relocated his business to San Diego in 2019, it was important to him to keep the name Hawaiian Fresh Seafood for two reasons: the established reputation and keeping the `uhane, or “spirit of Hawaii,” at the heart of the business. “Although we’re new to the seafood scene in San Diego County, we’re not new to the industry. We’ve been building our brand since 2006, and the Hawaiian Fresh “Our customers Seafood name has become synonymous with fresh, quality appreciate this seafood,” shared Porcelli, who lives once again in Poway. because they know As a small, family-owned company, Porcelli is involved in all aspects of the business and even puts on where their seafood his boots every day to work side-by-side with his crew. is coming from.” Each order is hand-cut and chosen for each individual order with the customer’s needs in mind. ost of us are familiar with the great outcomes of pet therapy – the comfort and smiles a pet can bring to adults and children. Yet, we often don’t consider the fur left behind after a pet therapy visit. After a decade of leading a pet therapy organization, Robin Kaufman realized there could be another option. “It just seemed natural to develop a pet therapy organization with poodles so that even more individuals could enjoy their visits,” she shared. Unlike other breeds of dogs that shed fur, poodles have hair that doesn’t shed and creates less allergic reactions. Robin is the founder of 4 Paws of Love, a nonprofit pet therapy organization that utilizes poodles of all sizes to spread comfort and smiles without the fur. Just over two years ago, Robin started the new nonprofit with “two teams and a dream,” she said. A team is one person and one poodle, and over 20 teams have expressed interest in becoming certified volunteers. The training process includes an initial evaluation, passing the Canine Good Citizen test, an orientation, and a minimum of 10 supervised visits with one of the 4 Paws of Love training supervisors. Robin also highly recommends a pet therapy training class for new teams. The 4 Paws of Love volunteers and poodles make visits to a variety of settings from hospitals and schools to rehabilitation and assisted living facilities. They have also provided pet therapy presentations for service groups and attended de-stress days at local colleges. The organization primarily serves the communities of Rancho Bernardo, Poway, and 4S

Ranch, but teams are available for visits across the San Diego area. Not only has Robin volunteered for the last two decades in pet therapy, she has adopted many poodles herself. “In that 20 years, I have adopted 11 standard poodles, seven of which have been pet therapy dogs at one point or another,” she shared. She has experienced a number of memorable moments over the years but recalls one that really stood out. While visiting a group of seniors, she shared, “A particular resident had not verbalized for a number of months. Upon petting the poodle, she smiled and said thank you. That was a fantastic moment.” For anyone interested in volunteering, Robin shared that 4 Paws of Love is always looking for volunteers with a poodle of any size with a good temperament. ¢ Name: Mission:

COMMUNITY STUFF
STEM Enthusiast Gives Back
Poway Girl Scouts Promote Safe Practices
When Poway High School student Madalyn Nguyen was named a Girls Living STEM awardee last fall, she won not just recognition for her STEM education achievements, but also another chance to give back to her community. Each awardee was asked to name a local elementary school to receive a Smart Buddies classroom pack to promote interest and opportunity in coding for young students. Madalyn chose Poway’s Valley Elementary School for the donation. The Smart Buddies are a set of diverse dolls on programmable scooters, combining storytelling with coding as students control the dolls’ movements on their scooters. They were developed collaboratively by SmartGurlz and Pitsco Education. Madalyn’s donation was officially presented to Valley Elementary on Feb. 26 at the school-wide Character Assembly, with Poway Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Marian Kim Phelps introducing her to the school. The Girls Living STEM awards are presented by STEM Ecosystems. Learn more at www.stemecosystems.org/girlslivingstem.
Poway Girl Scout Troop 2191 has turned to technology to continue serving the community while maintaining social distancing guidelines. They continue to meet virtually for their regularly scheduled meetings, and completed their STEM Journey project in early April with Dr. Deanna Asakawa, a professor at Cal State San Marcos. The project’s goal was to solve a problem using science, and the troop chose the timely topic of flattening the curve of novel coronavirus infections in the community. They scripted and produced a video on how to make homemade hand sanitizer, teaching people how to clean their hands when soap and water isn’t available, and especially when hand sanitizer is difficult to find in stores. Their video can be found at youtu.be/LJ1XK4JFzo0. The troop’s past adventures have included traveling to San Francisco, Alaska, and Canada, enjoying activities like kayaking, ziplining, and camping. They plan to bridge to Seniors, the next level of scouting, and travel internationally as well. To learn more about local scouting, visit www.sdgirlscouts.org or contact Poway Recruitment Specialist Victoria Vazquez at vvazquez@sdgirlscouts.org.
2nd Annual Speech Trek Competition
The American Association of University Women (AAUW) PowayPeñasquitos branch recently awarded local students at its second annual speech contest. This year’s topic was gender equality: “Are men and women truly equal today, or are the Suffragettes of 1920 still suffering in 2020?” Three students presented speeches at the Rancho Peñasquitos Library. Jay Wang, from Mark Keppel High School, won first place. Shiraz Rezaei attends Polytechnic High School, and Skandhaa Subramaniam attends Mt. Carmel High School. The event’s judges were Darshana Patel, president of the Poway Unified School District Board of Education; Barbara Bush, Ph.D., lecturer in the University of California San Diego Department of Communication; and Phil Barham, GATE/Seminar teacher at Ericsson Elementary School. Learn more by contacting AAUW Poway-Peñasquitos at aauwboard@gmail.com.
Poway’s Online Library While the Poway Library is closed for COVID-19 mitigation, books are still available for the whole community with the library’s eBook program. First, download Libby, a free eBook borrowing app available from the Apple App Store, Google Play, or Microsoft. alifornia All-Stars Cheer (CAS) began its story 19 years ago in North County San Diego. With more than 1,000 athletes throughout six locations – San Marcos, the Bay Area, Las Vegas, Ventura, Ontario, and Scottsdale, AZ – CAS has worked its way to offering the most competitive cheer program in the state of California, gaining international recognition along the way as 12-time World Champions. “All-Stars encompasses all the fun aspects about cheerleading, including dance, stunts, bonding with friends, and gaining confidence and skill through performances. Building the children from the inside out is what we do, because we focus on them as a whole,” said Tannaz Kirichkow, Owner of CAS. “Our goal is to make sure our kids gain a strong sense of self-confidence that will carry on for the rest of their lives.” CAS offers tumbling camps in the summer, which focus on tumbling techniques for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. The camps can last two or three days and are three hours per day. Camps are open to both boys and girls. CAS provides a sense of work ethic and life lessons in each of its classes, including a sense of bonding and camaraderie for cheerleaders who travel to national and international competitions.

“People come to California All-Stars for top-quality coaching and family atmosphere,” explained Tannaz. “Life lessons, core values, and athletic excellence come hand-in-hand. Marilee Chaney of North County said, “CAS is about positive attitudes. From the ‘can do’ approach toward all athletes
to seeing the staff enthusiastically hug a cheerleader when she gets a new tumbling skill – from the beginning, the message has been ‘you are capable, and you are welcome here.’” With a trained and energetic staff, spacious gym, and professional instruction, CAS has something for every budding cheerleader out there! Tryouts for new teams will be held May 13, 14, and 16, and students should preferably be there all three days. The tryout process determines team placement. Outpost Summer Camps Edited April 8, 2020: “We are disappointed to announce that Outpost Summer Camps is not able to operate this summer due to COVID-19. Please visit our website for details. We hope you and your families are well and that you will join us in summer 2021!” – Dr. Kelly Jones, Executive Director
O
utpost Summer Camps provides valuable opportunities for children to connect with each other face to face and away from screens. Founded in 2001, the camp serves over 1,500 children every summer completely outdoors and unplugged. The Outpost experience has three pillars that parents have loved for 18 summers: nature, fun, and exceptional staff! Nature is the vehicle through which children get to play collaboratively and creatively. Fun is experienced on a surface level through exciting games and on a deeper level through a sense of belonging and community. Exceptional staff lead small, consistent groups with a focus on friendships, special traditions, and an inclusive culture. Outpost serves children ages 3 to 14, and according to Dr. Kelly Jones, the camp’s owner and director: “Each of our camps has exciting, age-appropriate activities, and all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous adventures facilitated by the counselors and campers.” The three-week sessions and small, consistent groups are what make Outpost so impactful. Dr. Kelly explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” The camps also stand out with their commitment to safety. Outpost Summer Camps has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association since inception and operates under permit from the County of San Diego as an Organized Camp. ith the growing popularity of STEAM programs in schools, many parents are turning to technology camps to keep their students entertained and engaged during summer months. CodeREV Kids is one of Southern California’s fastest growing tech camps, and according to Founder Evan Boorman, offers the only standards-aligned summer tech program that focuses on math and science. Evan explained, “I started CodeREV to answer the question so many students have: ‘Why? Why should I learn math, science, or engineering?’ In our project-based classes and curriculum, students automatically answer these questions for themselves, since they need to learn these topic areas to create the fun and amazing projects they build and code in camp.” CodeREV offers a variety of classes for kids ages 6 to 16 to appeal to all technology-based interests. Its MathCraft program uses the popular video game Minecraft to teach math, and its Adventures in Programming class covers 3D game design. Its most popular option, Minecraft Level Design & Engineering, applies STEAM concepts to building amazing contraptions inside Minecraft. With a total of 10 different classes to choose from, there is something for everyone at CodeREV. Evan has been teaching STEAM for 17 years, has created education software, and has started education technology companies. Evan’s partner, Chief Education Innovation Officer John Stuppy, Ph.D., holds a Master’s degree in Education Technology from Stanford and a Ph.D. in Education Reform from UCLA, and has been teaching and creating curriculum for coding aligned with math for three decades. Real Estate in the Age of COVID-19 I
n the past few weeks, I have had several clients ask me if they should sell their homes now, given the uncertainty of the economy. The key word I focus on here is “should,” and I tell them “no.” Unfortunately, for some people it is not a matter of “should.” They have to sell (or buy). It is for those people that real estate has been declared an essential business. But the way we practice real estate has changed dramatically during this crisis. So, if you are in the category of those who need to be in the real estate market right now, here is what you can expect to see. • No open houses. Realtors are being banned from holding open houses for obvious reasons, so do not expect to be able to sell your home in the first weekend. And if you are a buyer, don’t expect to be able to go out looking at houses to “test the market.” Get a Realtor. You will need one. • Pre-approved buyers only. In order to even look at a house for sale, most Realtors are requiring that potential buyers be fully preapproved by their lender before
they are even allowed to step foot on a property. • Only vacant properties can be shown. If a property is occupied, some Realtors are only allowing the property be shown after an offer has been accepted! Obviously, the offer would be contingent upon the buyers viewing (and approving of) the property within a day or two of acceptance, but this means only the most serious buyers can enter. • Limited number of people allowed at showings. Most Realtor associations are recommending that only two buyers from any family be allowed to go see a property with their Realtor (and in some cases, only one person, plus the Realtor). • Inspectors, appraisers, and repairmen work alone. Inspectors are generally happy to

discuss their findings over the phone; however, it is not the same as being able to look directly at what is being discussed. • Virtual showings. To make up for these difficulties, a common work-around is for the Realtor or homeowner to create videos of a property, showing all the things a buyer might like to see, such as inside closets and cabinets, or close-ups of the floorings and wall coverings. We are all hoping these restrictions (and the need for them) end soon. But in the meantime, the real estate industry stands with the rest of the country, doing everything in our power to keep everyone safe and healthy. ¢
