ost people hold the memories of a few precious life experiences close to their heart. These are the memories that you are excited to tell your close friends and family about. They can be trips that you’ve taken, academic accomplishments, or even sporting events. Regardless of the specifics, these events are often remembered as if they were yesterday. I certainly have a handful of special memories that I am always eager to talk about. My youngest daughter recently experienced something that very few 12-year-old kids get to experience. She and her fellow softball teammates from the 4S Ranch 12U All-Stars went on a 13-game winning streak and became the California State Champions in their division. I still get choked up mentioning that title. It was an amazing thing to watch. Looking back, I realized that I was the exact same age when my Little League team went to the Texas state tournament. Although we didn’t become state champs, 32 years later I still have very fond memories of my experience at the tournament and the journey getting there. In fact, I’ve told the story countless times – just ask my sweet wife who has had to listen to it more times than I care to admit. And that brings me to my point. As these girls made the last out to win the state championship game on that hot and sunny day in Lancaster, the pure joy and emotions that followed were amazing to watch and absorb. There were tears of joy, lots of hugs, and plenty of celebrating that took place on the field. It was at that very moment that the magnitude of my daughter’s life experience became a reality. It was quite an emotional feeling for my wife and me when we realized that our daughter had just experienced a lasting life moment that she will carry with her and talk about for decades to come. I wish there was a way that we could select which life experiences we hold onto and carry with us for the rest of our lives. It would make things so much simpler. However, one thing that I have realized is that these life experiences tend to pick us – and not the other way around. Some people refer to them as a gift, and I definitely agree with that analogy. I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to my sweet daughter and her talented teammates. I am very proud to be a part of your journey and life experiences. Your hard work, enthusiasm, and zest for life are a true blessing. Keep doing what you do!

he RB Chorale recently awarded its annual scholarships to six young musicians. The chorale, led by founder and director Pat Bean, offers scholarships to local high school graduates who are seeking to further their musical education in college. The scholarship fund relies on community donations, and the scholarship committee selects six finalists every spring. Those finalists have the opportunity to perform at the RB Chorale’s annual two-night summer showcase, Best of Broadway, where the audience votes on the final rankings for each night. The Saturday and Sunday first-place winners were awarded $4,200, second-place winners received $2,500, and third-place winners received $1,700. Violinist Erica Hwang won the first night. She graduated from Torrey Pines High School and will study violin performance and business at Stanford University. Second place went to Ellie Barret,

a vocalist and graduate of San Marcos High School. She’s starting at Arizona State University this fall, after which she intends to be a professional entertainer. The third finalist on Saturday was Ryan Zhou, who performed on piano and also plays the viola. He graduated from Torrey Pines High School and will attend Yale University this fall. The second night of performances ended with Eduardo Pintado winning first place. Eduardo is a vocalist and graduate of Chula Vista Senior High School. He’s heading to University of California San Diego. Cameron Lincoln placed second for his piano performance; he graduated from Eastlake High School and will attend Stanford University. Third place was vocalist John Lettang, a Poway High School graduate who plans to study music performance and audio engineering at University of Colorado Boulder. “I want to help people deal with their feelings and their thoughts.”

helsea Reilly, a 13-year-old eighth grader at Bernardo Heights Middle School, has lived in Poway for the past seven years, and she appreciates the diverse community. Her mother hails from Japan and her father is originally from Ireland, so Chelsea has an appreciation for unique traditions and customs. She elaborated, “I like the variety of cultures here, especially how they mix together at school to create a diverse environment.” Her consideration and understanding of others are in line with her goal to one day become a psychologist. She explained, “I want to help people deal with their feelings and their thoughts.” For her upcoming school year, Chelsea will get to directly help others through her leadership role mentoring new students in the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program, a college-readiness nonprofit organization. Chelsea benefited from the program herself, revealing, “I really like AVID because it taught me great study skills.” In fact, Chelsea is a straight-A student who has consistently made the honor roll throughout all of her middle school years. At school, Chelsea’s favorite subject is math, because it is very

clear-cut and practical. “I do love how straightforward math is,” she said. She is also involved in her school news club. “I joined the news club to make new friends, which I did!” In her free time, Chelsea enjoys the sport of lacrosse, and made the All-Star team for the middle school recreational lacrosse league in San Diego. Now she plays on the varsity team for her local lacrosse club, Quad Cities Lacrosse. “I started playing lacrosse to get fit, and over time I became really attached to playing!” she added. She also enjoys some quieter pastimes, and poring over books is another passion of hers. Her favorites include the Harry Potter series, the Divergent series, and the Hunger Games trilogy. Chelsea gushed, “I really love to read!” With her wide-ranging interests, Chelsea’s innate qualities of acceptance and helpfulness will undoubtedly allow her to flourish in school and beyond. 

Poway Days Parade

54TH ANNUAL EVENT INVITES YOU TO BE THE INSPIRATION

he Poway Days Parade, a beloved local tradition, returns this year on Saturday, Sept. 8. The parade will kick off at 9 a.m. at Pomerado Rd. and Poway Rd., and will continue to Bowron Rd. Schools, marching bands, Scout troops, sports teams, community organizations, government officials, local businesses, and more are scheduled to take part. The parade is once again hosted by the Rotary Club of Poway-Scripps, and club members have been hard at work preparing for the festivities. The theme this year is Be the Inspiration – the same as Rotary International’s 2018-2019 presidential theme. Poway-Scripps Club President Karen Herreros explained, “We hope that this theme inspires people to see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change; across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.” Poway-Scripps Rotary has hosted the parade since 2013. “It’s a truly wonderful,

good old-fashioned parade,” said Pauline Getz, the club’s immediate past president. “Besides delighting the more than 10,000 participants it attracts, the parade serves as the club’s largest annual fundraiser to generate money for community service projects after the considerable parade expenses are satisfied”. This year’s grand marshal is Shelley Zimmerman, who retired from her position as San Diego Police Department (SDPD) Chief of Police in March. Appointed in 2014, she was the first woman to hold that position. She joined SDPD in 1982.

RECORDING ARTS STARS Diploma Program at Studio West Sees Alumni Shine

tudio West has been recording some of the biggest names in the music, TV, and film industry since it opened the doors in Rancho Bernardo in 1986. In 2004, they started oﬀering educational programs for industry professionals and hobbyists and in 2011 launched a full-time, 12-month Diploma in Recording Arts. Now the program has been established for well over five years, and many of the graduates have gone on to find success in the industry at studios and production facilities all over the USA. Here is a brief snapshot of some of the Diploma Program’s most successful alumni.

ALEX GEHRING Alex (’16) immediately began working at SIR Studios in New York City as a resident engineer working with both audio and backline. He’s had the opportunity to work behind the board for many established and up-andcoming artists in Manhattan and runs live sound at some of the coolest clubs in the city, such as BlueNote and Subrosa.

SAM McCORMICK Sam (’16) interned at Hans Zimmer Studios (Remote Control Productions), where he was quickly hired to assist with music for numerous television pilots. In January of 2017, Sam began working as a sound designer and sample editor at Amper Music, a new software company that helps people create unique, royalty-free soundtracks.

JACOB POWELL Jacob (’16) interned at Studio West and at the La Jolla Music Society Summer Fest before landing a job as an audio engineer at SIR Studios in New York City, where he works alongside his classmate and friend Alex Gehring.

SHELBY MEDDOCK Shelby (’13) found success with the Reggae band The Movement. Their album Side by Side, which Shelby tracked and mixed, debuted at #1 on iTunes’ Reggae charts and #2 on Billboard’s. She is now the audio engineer at The Compound Studios, and has produced five albums.

ORI RENDLER Ori (’14) is a location sound mixer for television and film. Some of his clients include ESPN, NBC, E!, Discovery, National Geographic, VICE, CMT, TLC, and more.

JONAH LEVINE AND BRIAN KEIM

Jonah and Brian (’14) are co-founders of Analog Media Productions, a digital media company based out of San Diego and Los Angeles. Their focus on video production reflects the importance of visual images in the way we consume media.

STEVEN GROOT Steven (’16) became a sound mixer and editor at Turning Point, a non-profit Christian organization in Lakeside. Though the job required five years’ experience, thanks to his Diploma Program knowledge, he was oﬀered the full-time position of sound mixer/editor. Steven works collaboratively with members of the television, radio, and digital media teams to provide audio mixes.

These are just a sample of the amazing things that Diploma students have found themselves a part of. POWAY MUSICIANS EXPLORE AND EXPERIENCE CENTRAL EUROPE

he Poway Symphonette and Poway Community Choir have returned from a whirlwind musical adventure through Prague, Vienna, and Salzburg. The groups performed both individually and together at St. Peter’s Church in Vienna, Melk Monastery, and Mozarteum Great Hall and Salzburg Cathedral as part of the 20th Annual International Cantus Music and Culture Festival. They also performed in nearby St. Gilgen. Touring members ranged in age from 13 to 75. “My favorite experience was our first concert at St. Peter’s Cathedral in Vienna,” shared Gayle McCutchan, principal second violin in the Symphonette. She has been with the group for three years. “The cathedral was so beautiful and holy that I barely held it together to play our program. The acoustics were amazing and it was a truly a once-in-a-lifetime performance.” Violist Kathleen Heaps was excited

to open the international concert at the Mozarteum. “It was so meaningful to not only open the concert but also to play in such an amazing and historical venue,” she said. “For me personally, it was such a highlight and something I never could have imagined doing

when I picked up the viola again less than six years ago.” “My favorite experience was playing with other musicians of all ages, and the mutual respect amongst all of us,” said violinist Summer Perry, who is starting ninth grade at Poway High School this fall. “Being one of the youngest people in the group, it felt as if there were no age differences.” Bruce Allen, also a violinist and incoming freshman at Poway High School, described the closing ceremony of the festival in Salzburg. “When the end of the ceremony came around, and the official festivities were over, something truly magical happened. All these people from around the globe gradually got out of their seats, stood up, and held hands. We all began to sway back and forth and sing the Song of Peace, a song almost every group knew, and made beautiful music together.” 

Poway Valley Garden Club Awards

Rancho Bernardobased Unicorn Jewelry was recently named the 77th Assembly District’s 2018 Small Business of the Year. “Unicorn Jewelry & Watch Boutique’s success throughout the years serve as an example for many small business entrepreneurs to follow,” said Assemblymember Brian Maienschein. “In its 38 years of doing business in Rancho Bernardo, Unicorn Jewelry has always made it a point to give back to the community.” Unicorn Jewelry, owned by siblings Fred Nasseri and Minoo Anvari and their father, Dr. Said Nasseri, was established in 1981 and has remained an active part of the community. The business is involved in a number of local organizations, including North San Diego Business Chamber, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego, Elizabeth Hospice, Soroptimist International, and Kiwanis Clubs. The Unicorn Jewelry team accepted the award from Assemblymember Maienschein at a ceremony in Sacramento.

The Poway Valley Garden Club (PVGC) instated its 2018-2019 board and announced awards for the previous year at a June luncheon and ceremony. Ann Dahnke and Donna Kaptain are this year’s co-presidents. PVGC earned 22 awards, and the Youth Garden Club earned 17 – an impressive number that also gained the club the California Garden Club, Inc., (CGCI) Sweepstakes Award Class V for receiving the most CGCI awards for the year. The club also won the CGCI #1 Community Impact Award and Kellogg Civic Achievement Award. On the national level, PVGC won first place for the National Garden Club’s Community Beautification Award. Individual award-winners include Joanie Espy, Palomar District CGCI Woman of the Year, and Reinhold Mueller, Palomar District CGCI Man of the Year. New Poway Principals Two Poway schools are welcoming new principals for the upcoming school year. “Poway Unified School District is proud to have such talented, passionate, and inspirational educators joining our school district and leading our schools,” said James Jimenez, Associate Superintendent of Personnel Support Service. Andrew Gergurich, the new principal at Painted Rock Elementary School, has previously served as principal at Angier Elementary School in the San Diego Unified School District; principal at Valencia Park Center for Academics, Drama, and Dance; and vice principal at Zamorano Fine Arts Academy. He was named Teacher of the Year during his tenure at Oak Park Elementary School. He has a Masters of Educational Leadership and B.A. from San Diego State University. Crystal Brownlee, new to Meadowbrook Middle School, has previously been an assistant principal at Oceanside High School and El Camino High School, as well as being a former science teacher and AVID Trained Instructor. She has an M.A. in Secondary Education from University of Phoenix, a B.A. from University of South Carolina, and a Biology and Science Teaching Credential.

PowPAC Presents Deathtrap PowPAC, Poway’s Community Theatre, continues its 2018-2019 season with a real thriller: Deathtrap, opening Friday, Aug. 31 and closing Sunday, Sept. 30. The play – written by Ira Levin, author of Rosemary’s Baby and The Stepford Wives – holds the record for the longest-running comedy thriller on Broadway and was adapted into film in 1982. The plot centers around successful playwright Sidney Bruhl and a collaboration with a student playwright that leads to unexpected twists and turns. PowPAC’s Deathtrap is directed by Brent A. Stringfield and produced by Lynn Wolsey. The cast includes Steve Murdock as Sidney Bruhl; Connie Chiarelli as his wife, Myra; Jamie Penry as young playwright Clifford Anderson; Dianne Gray as psychic Helga Ten Dorp; and David Dartt as attorney Porter Milgrim. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Opening night includes a complimentary reception with the cast after the performance. Emergency Preparedness Meeting In honor of FEMA’s National Preparedness Month, Poway Neighborhood Emergency Corps (PNEC) is hosting a public meeting on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at City Council Chambers, 13325 Civic Center Dr., with a focus on preparing for fire season and the importance of communications during emergencies. athedral Catholic High School’s (CCHS) core values of faith, knowledge, character, and responsibility have guided the development of high-achieving, well-rounded leaders for over 60 years. The CCHS legacy has deep roots, though the name is only 13 years old. Cathedral Girls High School merged with University San Diego High School (UNI) in

1970 on UNI’s Linda Vista Campus. UNI transitioned to the current CCHS Campus in Carmel Valley in 2005 and took on the new name of Cathedral Catholic High School. “No matter what campus you were on, once you become a Don, you’re always a Don,” said CCHS President Mr. Stevan Laaperi. “The Dons’ legacy has never been stronger. Over 50 alumni are among the CCHS team of

Poway High School’s Team Spyder Strives for Success, Safety, and Community Engagement

oway High School (PHS) is home to one of the most successful high school robotics programs in the world.

FIRST Robotics competition Team 1622, better known throughout the community as Team Spyder, teaches students not just the basics of building and programming, but also the essential principles of safety, teamwork, and community involvement. The program has grown from its original seven members to a team of over 70 students. Coaches and mentors support the student-driven program throughout the season of competitions and outreach events. We spoke with Head Coach Rodger Dohm to learn more.

Q A with Head Coach Rodger Dohm WHAT IS TEAM SPYDER? Team Spyder is the robotics team that represents the Poway High Engineering Academy and builds robots to compete in competitions like FRC and VEX. But we’re so much more than that. As a robotics team, we’re set apart by our commitment to safety, our countless mentorships and events, and our insistence on simple community involvement. As members, Spyders get to learn to program and build robots, be part of a real business environment, and participate in everything from fairs to local government meetings! If you want to get involved and help others get involved in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), if you want to get real business experience, if you want to travel to events throughout the country, if you want to get plenty of college credit and possibly even some scholarships, or if you just want to build a robot, Team Spyder is the place for you.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THE TEAM? The team started in 2002 with the first competition called RoboRocks at City College. From there, the next three years we participated in a competition called BotBall and then in 2005 started participating in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). Although we have participated in FRC every year since 2005, we also have participated in many other competitions such as the Student Showcase at the San Diego County Fair, CoDrone, FIRST VEX Challenge (FVC), Northrop Grumman Innovation Challenge, and IROC to name a few. We started with our original seven members of the FRC competition in 2005 and have now grown to over 70 students. The program evolved from a club to a full-fledged program were students also receive credit on their transcripts, can earn scholarships, and can letter in robotics, and it’s part of an Engineering Academy at the school. Team Spyder 1622 now participates in STEM and robotics outreach all over the world. We are currently working with schools and teams in Poland, Benin, Mexico, and Turkey. We will be adding support to the San Diego/Imperial Council of the Boy Scouts of America and Micronesia this coming season. We are internationally known and have won more awards than any other robotics team in FIRST Robotics in the county. WHAT IS YOUR ROLE WITH THE TEAM? I am the head coach, advisor, and leader of the team as well as the Engineering Academy coordinator. My role is to be a liaison between the school and the students. The team is led by students, and I assist them. The team is an Associated Student Body (ASB) organization on campus where students are leaders and run the organization. There is a student president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary. The advisor or head coach manages the two assistant coaches who also lead students, and all three coaches lead our 20-plus mentors who teach, guide, mentor, and lead students on various performance tasks, learning skills, and completing deliverables. Additionally, there is a booster organization that serves in boosting the team through logistics (travel, food, and lodging) and fundraising. The boosters are members of the community, including parents, mentors, and

WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND, AND WHAT SPARKED YOUR INTEREST IN WORKING WITH HIGH SCHOOL ROBOTICS STUDENTS? For 22 years, I have been an educator at Poway High, and I was a founding teacher at High Tech High. I hold a B.A. in mathematics and art, an M.A. in Educational Leadership, and a Masters in Governance from the California School Boards Association. I have served nearly 12 years on the Ramona Unified School District Board of Education and have been the board president four years. My interest in starting to infuse robotics into the school and working with students was the realization that the United States has a great need to fill jobs in the field of engineering. Statistics show that for every one job that is filled by an engineer, three engineering jobs go unfilled because the demand is so high and not enough people are seeking out engineering careers. An increase in the numbers of people pursuing engineering careers in the U.S. will provide companies with a workforce that will ultimately reduce the number of jobs that need to be outsourced. The U.S. currently cannot fill the engineering career demand. My goal with the Engineering Academy and robotics at PHS is to work with students to get them interested and excited about pursuing the field of

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR ROLE? THE MOST CHALLENGING? The most rewarding is to see the change in the lives of the students and them getting excited about STEM and robotics. The most challenging is the logistics and just the hard work involved in the background making this possible for the students. I sacrifice much time from my family and personal time to make it so.

HOW CAN STUDENTS JOIN THE TEAM? Students can go to www.teamspyder.org to the forms page and fill out the application. It is open to all PUSD students in grades 9 to 12. The application will be open in mid-August. We accept homeschoolers and a few eighth graders as well that have proven themselves with a strong STEM or robotics background.

HOW DOES TEAM SPYDER STAY CONNECTED TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY? We participate in events, host events, and are visible in the community by trying to be at as many events as possible. We run e-waste events as well as the four robotics events within our Poway community. This year, we will be participating in new events such as the Jack-O-Smash Run and Family Festival. We also are involved with the Boy Scouts and Include Autism, to name just a few.

ARE THERE ANY WAYS FOR THE COMMUNITY TO GET INVOLVED? Yes, you can become a mentor for the team or a sponsor. Please reach out to me at rdohm@powayusd.com if you can help out. We always need adults to help mentor the kids, and we always need sponsors as robotics can be expensive.

DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE MEMORIES OR EXPERIENCES WITH TEAM SPYDER? My favorite memory was when the team won the Las Vegas Regional in 2009. Our student president died in an automobile accident that year and the entire team worked their hardest, both parents and students. That win was dedicated to Tony Schafer, our president that passed away during our season. I’ll never forget speaking at the funeral and the motivation that it gave me to continue on with this program for kids. Robotics changes lives. I have seen it every year I work with students!

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? Just that we can always use sponsors to help us with participating in events and also reaching out in helping international schools trying to bring in STEM and robotics. r. Ellen Im Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, in operation since 2014 when it took over the Poway Kids Dental Care location, is focused on family-friendliness. As a mother of three children herself, owner Dr. Ellen Im emphasized, “The inspiration behind my practice came from the perspective of being a mother. I wanted a practice where parents would feel comfortable bringing their children.” Providing that comfort level involved developing a sense of security with her young clients and their parents. Dr. Im elaborated, “Families trust me as an ethical, caring doctor. They know they’ll be treated well by the dental team and given all their options on care, appointments, and finances. We’ll ultimately establish for them a dental home where the child can grow and mature as an individual.” One way that Dr. Im’s office allows the child to grow and mature is by offering “comfort menus.” These menus allow patients to select their own choice for: protective eyewear, a movie to watch, and an anxiety-reducing item (stress balls, warm blankets, stuffed animals, etc.). Even though her office has these homey touches, Dr. Im doesn’t compromise when it comes to modern technology options such as tooth-colored fillings, digital x-rays, laser dentistry, and even nitrous oxide or sedation dentistry if necessary. There is also an orthodontist on site, Dr. Anke Beyer-Jordan, who treats both children and adults with options such as interceptive orthodontics, Invisalign, and traditional braces.

Dr. Im spent many years providing dental care to the disadvantaged population while working in the greater Washington D.C./ Baltimore area after graduating from the University of Maryland Dental School. Now she specializes in oral health treatment for children ranging from infants to young adults, including those with special needs. As a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD), Dr. Im’s credentials verify her as a dentist who has successfully completed voluntary examinations, and who demonstrates specialized knowledge and skills. Immersing her business into neighborhood outreach activities, Dr. Im and her dental team give fun and interactive oral hygiene presentations at local schools

LOCAL GOLD AWARD GIRLS SCOUTS HONORED

oway residents Amy Ellis, Emily Hime, Amy Yandell, and Mattea Hernandez have earned the Girl Scout Gold Award – the organization’s highest honor – for demonstrating extraordinary leadership by identifying and tackling social issues. “Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award is truly a remarkable achievement,” said Carol M. Dedrich, CEO of Girl Scouts San Diego. “These young women exemplify leadership in all its forms.” Troop 8239’s Amy Ellis used her project to raise awareness and support for La Tribu de Jesus Orphanage in Tijuana. The organization serves 100 children, ranging from newborns to teenagers. Amy hosted presentations, created and shared an informational video, and ran a blanket-making workshop. Thanks to Amy’s efforts, the community donated more than 2,000 personal hygiene items and nearly 20 blankets.

Is Poway Headed for a Housing Bubble? by CYNTHIA ELIZONDO

ith housing prices appearing to skyrocket (the 2018 median home price for a home in Poway is a whopping $720,000), the question in everyone’s mind is whether we will see another bubble burst, such as we saw in 2007 and 2008. I understand the concern, but an analysis of the historical data, as well as the social and financial environment make me believe we are not facing a similar housing collapse. First, the rate of increase in home values is manageable. If we consider the historic average rise of housing prices from 1968 to 2004 of 6.8% year over year (National Association of Realtors), we are actually below this trajectory. In fact, Poway’s median home price increase between 2000 and 2018 averaged closer to 4.7%, going from $315,000 in 2000 to $720,000 today. This is a very healthy rate of increase. Second, the mortgage industry has changed. Banks are being much more conservative in whom they will lend to. The sub-prime lending practice of the early 2000’s led to people getting mortgages they could not afford. Add to that the number of loans with no down payment, and borrowers really had nothing to lose by defaulting on their loans. These practices have not been used by

the mortgage industry for over 10 years. Finally, homeowners have changed the way they borrow money from the equity in their homes. In 2006, home equity lines of credit were up to $85 billion. That number dropped to only $10 billion in 2010, and has risen to only $14 billion since then (Wall Street Journal). In addition, bankruptcies have fallen by 50% since 2010. In short, we are more responsible with our wealth. Does this mean housing prices will continue to rise at the same 4.7% rate over the next few years? My prediction is that rising interest rates and a higher housing inventory will keep prices rising, but at a slightly slower pace. And if you believe Harvard professor Teo Nicholas, the next housing bubble won’t occur until at least 2026, so we’re good! 

ome Consignment Center (HCC) is a fresh mix of previouslyloved items, as well as new products from model homes and designer showrooms and pieces from artists. “We choose great products and sell them at a great value. Our goal is to offer our customers an easy way to change out their décor at any time without the stress of selling it themselves. Our customers love change, and having a place to buy and sell gives them the freedom to update their nest without breaking the bank,” revealed Tracy Johnson, store manager. Home Consignment Center offers complimentary in-home previews for our consignors. A representative of HCC will go out to a consignor’s home and evaluate the potential consignment items. According to Johnson, this makes the consignment process much less of a burden for the consignor as they do not have to bring the items into the store to evaluate and price. “We also make it easy for sellers to transport items into the store. We have partnered with Awesome Movers to offer customers an easy and affordable way to get their furniture into the store for sale,” explained Johnson. The HCC sales strategy is also unique in that items arrive directly to the showroom instead of a warehouse or storage area. This open concept allows customers to see items as they arrive. As stated by Johnson, this creates a constant feeling of excitement among regulars and first-time shoppers alike. In the mid-1990s, the idea for Home Consignment Center was born. Christine and Johnny Crowell decided to open a furniture store with a similar business model to their successful antique auto consignment business. Jamece and John Fondnazio joined the Crowells and formed a partnership built on promoting high quality furniture and accessories at fair prices. The first store opened in Danville, California, and now there are 18 locations across the southwest, including the one in 4S Ranch. “In response to San Diego shoppers visiting the Orange County stores, the owners of HCC decided San Diego was a natural location to expand. Our 14,000-square-foot store is filled with natural light, a beautiful coffee bar and, of course, an eclectic mix of beautiful home furnishings,” stated Johnson. HCC’s 4S location is also launching a fine jewelry department, allowing customers to buy and seller jewelry along with home furnishings and accessories.
