Horsing Around

P U B L I S HE R

Derrick Breaux

I

’m from Southeast Texas, so I’ve been on my fair share of horses growing up. My good friend had a couple of horses that we would saddle up and ride to the levee. And no, I’m not making this stuff up – there really was a levee about a mile from my childhood home. I’m pretty sure that people have written songs about this. When I met my wife about 20 years ago, I learned that she grew up with horses. Over the years, she shared many stories of riding on the endless trails in Poway – many of which have long been taken over by developments and homes. The time that she spent with her horses growing up made a lasting impression that she holds close to her heart. Our youngest daughter, Audrey, started taking riding lessons a couple of years ago. Although she has traditionally split her extracurricular hours between soccer, softball, and music, we noticed that she quickly developed a strong passion for horseback riding. Last year Audrey approached us with the idea of adopting or rescuing a horse. At first, we thought the idea was absurd. But this didn’t deter her. While she could have accepted our decision and moved on, instead, she began developing a plan and documenting everything that needed to take place in order to accomplish her goal. She presented her plan to us – which included her own financial and time commitments. And as you may have guessed by reading this and seeing the photo, Audrey did find a horse that needed a new home. In fact, she actually found two horses (eight-year-old brothers from different mothers). Thankfully the horses had not been abused, but they had been neglected. Unfortunately, they were left in their stalls at a facility in Los Angeles with very little socializing and human attention for the past year and a half. Little did these two horses know, they were about to get the full attention of a very determined and dedicated 13-year-old girl. Over the past couple of months, we have watched these horses transform from nervous and shy creatures to warm and loving family members. I have observed a beautiful bond develop between my daughter and these giant animals that is very difficult to describe. Although I was skeptical at first, what started out to be a project for my daughter and wife has turned into a family affair. It has been refreshing to take an hour here and an hour there to join them at the stables. Time seems to slow down while we are there. Technology is optional at best. It is very tranquil and therapeutic. But most importantly, I get to watch and be involved while memories are made that we will carry with us for the rest of our lives.

T

he Ingstad family has found both their home and their community in Poway. Brian and Lynne Ingstad had spent two years in Poway, then moved to San Marcos before returning. “After being away from Poway, we knew we wanted to come back and raise our family here,” the couple explained. Both from Southern California, Lynne and Brian met while working as snowboard instructors at Big Bear during a break from college. The couple went on to earn their respective degrees from San Diego State University and become business owners. Brian owned a construction company for 10 years, and, in 2010, Lynne opened a dance studio. “The best part of owning the studio is being a positive role model for the students and watching and supporting them as they grow up, attend college, and become successful members in society,” Lynne said. Today, the Ingstad family includes daughters Hailey and Elizabeth. The girls attend Classical Academy and are competitive dancers at So Cal Dance, the family’s dance studio. In 2018, at age 9, Hailey was the youngest dancer on the United States Tap Team to compete in the IDO World

Tap Dance Championships in Germany. Opening So Cal Dance has created a strong sense of an extended family for the Ingstads. “Dance studios are second homes to dancers, and we love having the shared responsibility to parent, guide, and nurture each one of our dancers, not just as dancers, but as people,” Lynne acknowledged. “We feel so blessed and lucky to have so many amazing families be a part of our family and being able to give back to the Poway community.” The family’s home in Poway includes a yard that Brian has transformed into the family farm, producing most of the family’s food. In addition to gardening, a favorite family hobby is hiking the trails and nature preserves in the area. A deep value for the Ingstad family is the mindset that nothing is impossible. The family embraces thinking and living “out of the box,” Lynne explained. “We believe we can tackle any obstacle.” As business owners and parents, Lynne and Brian have negotiated a number of obstacles. “When people ask how we do it, we just say, ‘You just do it with a smile and positivity.’” 

PUSD Orchestra Festival

The 2019 Poway Unified School District (PUSD) Orchestra Festival will be Sunday, March 3 at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. The event will last from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m., with each orchestra playing for 30 minutes. This year’s participating schools are Bernardo Heights Middle School, Black Mountain Middle School, La Jolla Country Day Upper Division School, Meadowbrook Middle School, Oak Valley Middle School, Rancho Bernardo High School, and Twin Peaks Middle School. Soroptimist International North San Diego (SINSD) and Soroptimist International Poway’s joint fundraising event returns with a new name and the same worthwhile cause this year. Soroptimist Hats & Heels, scheduled for March 31 at 12 p.m. at Carmel Valley’s Fairmont Grand Del Mar, will raise money for the organizations’ Transitional Housing Program for survivors of domestic violence and other programs benefiting local women and girls. Guests can look forward to a delicious luncheon, silent and live auctions, raffles, and entertainment with Floyd A. Smith, formerly of the Fifth Dimension. The event truly demonstrates the possibilities of collaboration. “Instead of having a chairlady this year, we have formatted the structure with a committee of eight women and members from both clubs who want to ‘learn the ropes” of planning the event,” shared SINSD President Ginny Brown. “Of course, all this would not be possible without the help and support of members from both clubs who volunteer their time at the event itself.” Learn more at www.sihatsandheels.org.

This year’s adjudicators are San Diego Symphony Associate Conductor Sameer Patel and California Chamber Orchestra Artistic Director Dana Zimbric. They will also present a master class on-stage. The annual festival is open to the public and has showcased PUSD musicians and positive learning for over 25 years. For more information contact PUSD Orchestra Director Ulli Reiner at ureiner@powayusd.com.

Q&A HOW DID YOUR VISION FOR ZCODE MAGAZINES BEGIN? I was lucky enough to have a few articles published about me when I played football in high school. It was very exciting. I still have those articles. I wanted to create a local magazine that made people feel good. A magazine that people looked forward to receiving in their mailboxes. A magazine specifically for the neighborhoods that we call home, with colorful photos and a variety of interesting articles. SINCE ITS CONCEPTION IN 2009, IN WHAT WAY HAVE THE MAGAZINES DEVELOPED MOST? Talent! I have been fortunate to work with an incredibly talented group of people that share the

ZCode vision. The quality of the magazines (editorial and design) is unparalleled in the community magazine arena. WHAT HAS BEEN MOST REWARDING OF ZCODE’S JOURNEY SO FAR? Having people come up to me and tell me how much they enjoy reading the magazine. It never gets old! WHAT ARE YOUR LONG-TERM GOALS FOR THE MAGAZINES? Honestly, it’s to keep publishing magazines that are meaningful to the local residents. And if we are able to grow our family of magazines along the way by adding additional communities, then that’s a bonus!

At Serenity Dental Group, Patients Receive High Quality, Individualized Care by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo provided by Serenity Dental Group

S At-A-Glance Name of Business: Serenity Dental Group Owner: Dr. Pegah Salami Manager: Maryam Karimi Years in Position: 20+ Year of Establishment: 2004 Address: 12396 World Trade Dr., Suite 208, San Diego, CA 92128 Website: www.SerenityDentalGroup.net Email: info@SerenityDentalGroup.net Phone: 858-673-1000 Description of Business: A high-quality, relationship-based practice providing advanced technology and materials comfortably, conveniently, and with compassion. Services include general, cosmetic, laser dentistry, implants, Invisalign.

erenity Dental Group was established by Dr. Pegah Salami with the philosophy of providing patients with excellent oral health care and advanced treatment in a relaxed and spa-like atmosphere. Dr. Salami wanted patients to be comfortable – not feel like they were in a cold and clinical environment. “We know that coming to the dentist is not a pleasurable experience for many patients. We are able to take patients who are afraid, have many dental issues, or are embarrassed by their oral health and give them a positive experience where they are treated like family,” revealed Maryam Karimi, manager of the practice. In the waiting area of Serenity Dental Group, patients will find a beverage bar, massage chairs, and soothing aromatherapy. Patients can also hear the sounds of a water fountain in the courtyard. When patients are brought back to the dental chairs, they are given warm neck wraps and blankets. Each operatory has televisions on the ceiling, and patients are able to choose from a menu of movie options. The services offered at Serenity Dental Group include general, cosmetic and laser dentistry, Invisalign, implants, periodontics, oral surgery, endodontics and sedation dentistry. Convenience is also an important aspect of oral health care at Serenity Dental Group. “If specialty work is needed, the specialists come to our office so that the patient does not have to travel to another practice. Dr. Salami also believes that this eliminates communication errors between her and the specialists,” said Karimi. The practice provides same-day service for most procedures, allowing the patient to take minimal time off of work. In addition, the practice is dedicated to using the latest in dental technology and procedures, from Cerec technology on crowns, veneers, and implants, to laser technology to treat gum disease. Serenity Dental Group is also chartless and all digital, including the x-ray equipment. Dr. Salami and her team, which includes associate doctors, are committed to educating patients and helping them understand all aspects of their oral health care. “We are able to meet all the needs of the patient and alleviate all their concerns about their oral health, whether they are clinical or financial in nature,” said Karimi. LOCAL STUDENTS SUCCEED IN ROBOTICS COMPETITIONS

M

eadowbrook Middle School’s robotics program has had a very successful season competing in FIRST LEGO League. Head Coaches Stacy Ganzer and Vaidehi Puntambekar oversaw a record eight robotics teams of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. Individual teams are led directly by parent volunteers. The popular program combines engineering skills with its core values: gracious professionalism, teamwork, inclusion, innovation, discovery, fun, impact, and “coopertition” – competing while sharing knowledge with each other and other teams. Every season, teams design and build a robot that can complete a series of tasks using EV3 Mindstorms programming. This season’s theme was Into Orbit, and the tasks included putting a LEGO astronaut into his space pod. The team also had to solve a physical or social problem faced during long-duration space exploration. Three of Meadowbrook Middle School’s teams – Doodle Bots, Space Invaders, and Team Astro – qualified for the FIRST LEGO

League Southern California Championship in December. All three teams placed in the top 20 for robot challenge points, and Team Astro and Team Space Invaders won first place in the core values category. Learn more about the program and how to register a team at www.meadowbrookrobotics.org. 

EXCITING THINGS ARE HAPPENING AT STUDIO WEST IN 2019!

O

ne of the busiest recording studios south of LA is located here in Rancho Bernardo. Although Studio West has been around since the 1980s, 2018 was one of the best years ever, according to studio owner Peter Dyson. There certainly were some big names in the studio in 2018 – artists like Lauryn Hill, actors such as Oscarwinners Richard Dreyfuss and Alan Arkin, along with world-famous John Cena. But Dyson is equally passionate about the local artists and community groups who work out of the studio. “I regard Studio West as a resource for the local music and creative community,” said Dyson. “This May will be the sixth year we have hosted the RB

Chorale for their scholarship auditions for high school students planning on studying music in college, and we gave tours to almost 500 middle and high school students last year who want to see what goes on in a working studio. Teachers can request a tour by calling or emailing the studio.” In addition, last year Studio West saw two strong trends continue – more video and more electronic music. “Video is so important to the way we consume media nowadays and over the last few years we have really built up our competency for in-studio video shoots,” said Dyson. “We’ve also seen more electronic music production sessions this past year. I love pianos,

guitars, and drums, but the computer is now an instrument too. We enjoy teaching people how to create music electronically just as much as we enjoy teaching more traditional recording techniques.” For more information about the educational programs offered by Studio West, go to www.studiowest.com and be sure to keep an eye on their Facebook page as you never know who might be in town! 

Good News for Poway Homeowners and Renters by CYNTHIA ELIZONDO

S

an Diego (and by extension, Poway) has been facing an increasing crisis with regards to the affordability of housing, and it is getting worse. A recent report by financial website SmartAsset states that San Diego is on the list of top 10 cities for increases in rent as a percent of household income, reaching 32.8% in 2017 (the most recent year for which data is available). That is up 2% from 2014. The cause for the increase can be mainly attributed to higher rents, coupled with disproportionate increases in salary. The end result is that it is increasingly more difficult to afford to rent here. In an effort to provide more affordable housing statewide, California passed a bill in January of last year that makes it easier for homeowners and developers to build what are called Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) on homes zoned for singe family residences. ADUs are known by many different names. The most common of these are “granny flats,” “guest

houses,” or “in-law units.” Historically, these have been allowed on single-family properties; however, they have not been allowed to include a kitchen (to avoid the ability to rent them out as separate rental units). Poway adopted its own version of this late last year, making it easier, more affordable, and code-compliant to build and own an ADU within the city of Poway. The size of the ADU can be between 500 and 1,500 square feet (up to 50% of the size of the main house), and can even be made from a converted garage (with exceptions)! The permits for the building of these ADU units have been cut in half, making it that much more affordable, too. The best news of all is that these ADU’s can now include a kitchen with a stove and can be rented out as

separate units. This is very good news for both homeowners and renters alike. Homeowners are able to take advantage of the new code to create some rental income on their home property to help offset their mortgage payments, while renters are given more options (theoretically affordable options) on places to live. Another benefit is that this law allows for more multigenerational living. This is becoming more popular, as children are coming back home to live with their parents, or older parents are moving in with their children, all to combat the high price of living we pay here as part of our “sunshine tax.” 

IT’S SHOWTIME! Local Stages Shine During San Diego Theatre Week by SAMANTHA EDWARDS

H

ome to renowned institutions like The Old Globe and La Jolla Playhouse, which together have sent more than 50 productions to Broadway, San Diego has earned its reputation as a premiere theater destination. With everything from comedy, theater, dance, and music on any given day of the week, there is something for anyone who wants to sample San Diego’s robust performing arts offerings. Perhaps the best opportunity to take advantage of everything our city has to offer is Feb. 14 through 24 for San Diego Theatre Week, an annual event that highlights the variety and talent of the local performing arts community with special promotions from participating groups as well as events throughout the week. Tickets

will be available at $15, $30, and $45 levels. Participating theater groups from across the county include San Diego Repertory Theatre, Poway Center for the Performing Arts, North Coast Repertory Theatre, Scripps Ranch Theatre, STAR Repertory Theatre, PowPAC, JCompany Youth Theatre, New Village Arts Theatre, OB Playhouse and Theatre Company, Coronado Playhouse, Diversionary Theatre, and National Comedy Theatre, among many others. Support your local ensemble or venture out and discover a new kind of performance this February – you might even pair a drama with dinner for a fun Valentine's Day date! For tickets and more information visit www.sandiegotheatreweek.com. 

PRO ETIQUETTE TIPS: Dress to impress. While casual attire is generally acceptable for attending a daytime show, nighttime shows warrant slightly more formal dress. And don't forget a jacket or coat – the theater can be chilly!

Arrive early. Try to arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of the show to find your seat, read the program, and listen to any important announcements.

Turn off your cell phone. Be sure to silence any electronic devices that could be a distraction to the performers on stage or the people around you.
