It’s Boat Time

P U B L I S HE R

Derrick Breaux D IRE C TO R O F B U SINE S S DE V E LO PME NT

Jessica Breaux

I

’ve been champing at the bit to take the family out to San Vicente Reservoir. It reopened to the public this past fall after being closed since 2008 for the San Vicente Dam Raise Project, which created new emergency water storage for the region by raising the height of the dam. Our boat had been in storage since last summer. Needless to say, it needed a little cleaning to get ready for the water. Although I was alone with this thought, I felt cleaning the boat would be the perfect Saturday family project. After a long day using plenty of elbow grease – scrubbing, bribing, rinsing, twisting arms, and scrubbing some more – the boat was ready to go. Batteries charged. Oil checked twice (I learned my lesson the hard way on this, but that story is for another day). The expanded San Vicente Reservoir lived up to all the chatter. I think the new marina and boat launch is now the best in SoCal. The first boat ride of the season went well. Kids were nothing but smiles. My son took his turn at the helm and practiced his driving skills. My daughter giggled each time we encountered a wave. The engine sounded great, and the cool wind on our faces felt even better. I want to say the outing went without a hiccup, but we had a minor mechanical issue at the end of the day once we got the boat back on the trailer. My outdrive wouldn’t trim up into the travel position. Several people offered assistance. I politely declined, letting them know that I was contemplating leaving the boat behind and having someone deal with it the next morning. One gentleman, who had been out fishing with his buddies all day, wouldn’t take no for an answer. He jumped into my boat and handed me his business card (which showed he owned a boat repair service). Within minutes, he had his tool pouch out and my boat outdrive raised back into the proper towing position. When I thanked Dave of DCM Marine, he just said, “Hey man, that’s what boat people do. We take care of each other.” I couldn’t help but wonder how much better the world would be if everyone had a boating mentality and enthusiastically looked out for one another. Special thanks to Dave Perez of DCM Marine. If you need Derrick Breaux a knowledgeable boat guy for new and used parts, service, or Publisher repair, Dave’s your man. Poway Student Star Carley Matz Is Involved in Her Community by KELLEY GUSICH | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

W

ith a family who’s lived in Poway since the 1950s, Carley Matz has many reasons to love her hometown, including the fact that the area is safe and extremely family-oriented. A Poway High School junior, her favorite subjects are biology and chemistry, because the labs are interesting and because she enjoys learning about how things work. “I love how the teachers always want the students to succeed,” Carley said, “and are willing to do whatever they can to help the students.” Name: School: Grade: Parents: Siblings: Favorite Place in 92064:

Carley Matz (16) Poway High School 11 Robin and Eric Matz Ashley (21) and Kaeley (19) Poway Lake, because my family and I have been going there ever since I was little, creating memories, which makes it have a special place in my heart.

12 • 92064 MAGAZINE.COM • May | June 2017

Inside of PHS, Carley is part of girl’s lacrosse, peer counseling, and AVID, and she is the class secretary. Outside of school she plays competitive soccer for the Del Mar Sharks, backpacks with the Poway Backpackers, and hopes to be an exchange student in Greece for two weeks this upcoming summer. “I got started in all this because I love meeting new people,” she smiled, “and being able to experience what all these unique activities have to offer me.” Carley has volunteered throughout Poway for the past four years, gaining over 1,000 hours in community service. She received the Presidential Gold Award for these service hours, and also won titles in several pageants, including Miss Junior Teen Poway and Miss Teen Poway First Princess. “These pageants have worked on improving interview skills, public speaking,” Carley explained, “and have helped me be more confident in who I am.” Hoping to attend the University of Washington, Carley wants to major in business, because she would like to one day start her own business. “I also have a love of traveling, therefore I would like to visit as many different countries as I can.” She is grateful for the opportunity to be featured in 92064 Magazine, and cites her family as her inspiration. “My family continues to inspire me every day to be the best person I can by giving back, always being positive, and pushing me to work hard in everything I choose to do.” An extensive involvement with her Poway community, coupled with a positive attitude and strong work ethic, makes Carley Matz an ideal 92064 Student Star. 

WINERY PROFILE

by LAINEY KRAL | photos provided by Bernardo Winery

G

uests of all ages can celebrate the past while enjoying the present at the historic, family-owned and operated Bernardo Winery. Established in 1889, the winery has been in the Rizzo family for three generations – they’ve owned the winery since 1927. “It’s a step back in time to a Mediterranean village, where people can relax and take in the old ways,” shared Marketing Director Samantha Nawrocki. “Often, new guests are surprised by the rustic buildings, old world feel, and tranquility, after they drive through suburbia to get here.” The grounds are home to a unique collection of village shops, with something for everyone: home and garden goods, chocolates, handbags and accessories, clothing, art gallery and classroom, clay studio, theater, jewelry, and flowers. “One unique addition is a craft coffee roaster, Manzanita Roasting Company, that roasts fresh coffee beans,” said Samantha. Relax for a sit-down meal at Café Merlot, or enjoy an espresso drink and a sandwich at V’s Coffee Shop. And of course, there’s the wine itself. “We specialize in wines that really suit the terroir here in San Diego,” Samantha explained. “Syrah, Petite Syrah, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Albarino, Chardonnay, Malbec… We have a great assortment of wines that can either pair great with a meal or just be enjoyed on our tasting room patio with a nice cheese board from V’s.” There’s always something to look forward to, with new wines released throughout the year. Bernardo Winery offers winemaker dinners and pairing events, and a wine club is currently in the works. Artwalks return May 19 through September, with live music and food trucks until 9 p.m. on Fridays. That old world atmosphere is the perfect backdrop for a wide array of community, private, and corporate events. The winery’s venues are famous for weddings, but the possibilities are endless. “We host everything from corporate mixers, wine blendings, birthdays, anniversaries, and family get-togethers to, yes, memorials,” said Samantha. “There are so many events to celebrate, and weddings are just one of them.” With a morning cup of coffee or an evening glass of wine, savor the next chapter of history at the Bernardo Winery. ¢ 14 • 92064 MAGAZINE.COM • May | June 2017

Family Roots The Davis Family Has a Reputation for Spreading Love and Compassion in the Community by LIZ ONUFER | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

T

he Davis family’s connections to Poway stretch back to when the community truly was country. Todd Davis grew up in Poway after his grandmother settled there in 1975. Today, Todd and Miranda and their two children, Lila, 7, and Colton, 5, continue the family tradition as active community and church members. The couple moved into Todd’s childhood home in the Old Poway community four years ago to help take care of Todd’s grandmother, Ethie. The Davis family reputation runs deep in the community. “To this day, we run into people who know Ethie and talk about how she and her husband, Hugh, touched their heart,” Miranda shared. “This began Todd’s passion for

his community and the reason why Todd wanted to raise his family in the town he is so fond of.” The Davis family home is the perfect spot for their lifestyle. “My kids and I get to walk to school every day. Midland is where I teach and my kids attend school,” Miranda shared. As second generation Poway natives, Lila and Colton are attending the same schools that Todd attended. “We go to Cornerstone Church, which is also walking distance from our house, and we love riding our bikes around town and walking to the farmers market.” Both Miranda and Todd are teachers. Miranda is a third grade teacher at Midland Elementary School, and Todd teaches PE at Bernardo Heights Middle School. On the weekends, the family can be found at Lila’s softball games, where Todd is a coach, or cheering on Colton’s flag football team. They also love camping in their motorhome at the beach. Integral in their family life is Cornerstone Church. Todd and Miranda run the Awana program, an outreach and leadership program at the church. “Awana has provided us the opportunities to reach kids in the community and create special bonds to help kids through challenging times,” Miranda acknowledged. The life the Davis family has built today is not what people might have expected of Todd and Miranda, who both come from troubled families. “Statistically, we should have followed in our parents’ path and led a troubled life as well,” she said. “However, with the help of God, we were both able to escape that difficult life and change the course of our future. We vowed to build a happy life filled with love and positive experiences for both our kids and ourselves.” 

Fostering Stability

BLUE APPLE RANCH BRINGS AT-RISK ANIMALS AND CHILDREN TOGETHER

F

ounded in 2001 in honor of the late animal lover Toby Wells, the Toby Wells Foundation is a community resource for San Diego’s underserved children and at-risk animals through innovative programs at Blue Apple Ranch (BAR), a 277-acre facility in the western foothills of Ramona. The genesis of BAR was in 2007, when Toby’s parents attended the Kentucky Derby and discovered that many of the losing horses from the race were destined for slaughter. It was then that the family’s mission to save and rehabilitate horses and then connect them with children through specialized programming was born. The horses that reside at Blue Apple today come from a variety of circumstances, often involving abuse and neglect. Many of the youth that BAR serves come from similar backgrounds. Rescued horses arrive at BAR and undergo an assessment to determine if they are candidates for the training program and adoption. Horses that are not adoptable enter the BAR sanctuary, where they are guaranteed a safe home at the ranch for the rest of their lives. Non-sanctuary horses become involved with education programs at the ranch. The Work For It internship program, for example, is an intensive 18-week program for at-risk teens ages 14 to 18 from San Pasqual Academy or Abraxas Continuation High School. Interns work alongside BAR staff to gain an understanding of equine care, anatomy, nutrition, basic first aid, CPR, irrigation, gardening, leadership, and life skills. Blue Apple also offers field trip opportunities with scholarships provided to Title 1 schools in the Poway Unified School District, as

well as enriching day camp experiences through its partnerships with local YMCA branches. Even further, BAR hosts a number of special events throughout the year aimed at celebrating and honoring local foster children. “The most rewarding part of working at Blue Apple is knowing we make a difference,” said Adrienne Wells Holmes. “Knowing we’ve rescued hundreds of horses and have served thousands of children locally with a positive message of kindness, compassion, and responsibility is life-changing.” The Toby Wells Foundation will host its

annual Denim and Diamonds Golf Classic Tournament at Barona Creek Golf Club on Friday, June 2. All proceeds will benefit programs at Blue Apple Ranch. For more information about the foundation and its upcoming event go to www.tobywells.org. To learn more about the ways in which BAR serves the community visit www.blueappleranch.org. ¢

St. Michael’s Academic Decathlon Win

St. Michael’s School earned first place overall out of 21 schools at the 21st Annual San Diego Diocese Academic Junior High Decathlon Competition in March, qualifying them to compete in the State Academic Junior High Decathlon in Sacramento in April. “It was a joy for me to work with these students and to see them rewarded for their hard work and dedication to learning,” said Academic Decathlon Coach Malini Paye. “The best part was watching them build lasting friendships and learn important teamwork lessons through this experience.” In addition to qualifying for the State competition, the St. Michael’s team earned first place in the team logic competition and second place in the team super quiz competition. Six students also earned awards in their individual events: Stacy Widyono (first place in science), Hayden Jackson (first place in literature), Treasa Paul (third place in religion), Paola Simi (fourth place in social studies), Natasha Tavares (fourth place in writing), and Pierre Paye (fifth place in current events). Once in Sacramento, the team continued to succeed. They placed first in Super Quiz; Stacy Widyono again placed first in science; and eighth grader Jane Cox placed second in fine arts.

15th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup Poway Community Park was one of 113 cleanup sites for I Love A Clean San Diego’s (ILACSD) 15th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup held on Earth Day in April. Approximately 6,200 registered volunteers helped improve the health and beauty of San Diego’s natural environment during the three-hour event, removing more than 150,000 pounds of trash and debris from locations throughout the county. Some notable odd items found in the cleanup included a $90 check, an ATM machine shell, and a raw chicken package. Volunteers also beautified and restored the local environment through painting, planting, and weeding projects. Several of San Diego’s elected officials visited cleanup sites in their respective districts, including: San Diego City Councilmembers David Alvarez, Barbara Bry, Georgette Gomez, Chris Ward and Lorie Zapf; Assemblymembers Lorena Gonzales and Brian Maienschein; Senator Toni Atkins; and U.S. Congressman Scott Peters. Creek to Bay is one of hundreds of cleanups hosted by ILACSD. Learn more at www.ilacsd.org.

PUSD Scores High on State Dashboard The California Department of Education recently released new evaluation rubrics and the California School Dashboard as a way to measure student performance and give a more comprehensive look at overall district and school performance. The rubrics, which will be rolled out gradually, analyze 10 indicators of student performance: graduation rates; English language arts and math; parent engagement; school climate; progress of English learners; college and career readiness; implementation of state standards; services, materials, and facilities; chronic absenteeism; and suspension rates. Poway Unified School District (PUSD) scored at the highest possible levels in several areas, including graduation rates and student performance in English language arts and math for third through eighth grade. PUSD also met the state target in reducing the number of students suspended during the year and in measuring how well English language learners are progressing. Full Dashboard results will be reported this fall. Learn more at www.caschooldashboard.org.

The Poway High School PTSA is preparing to host the Monte Carlo Masquerade-themed Grad Nite for the Class of 2017 on Thursday, June 8. Graduation night is historically one of the deadliest nights for students across the nation. Grad Nite is a safe and sober annual event held on graduation night in the school gymnasium to help prevent drug- and alcohol-related deaths in the community. In previous years, as many as 85 percent of graduating seniors have attended. The Grad Nite Committee encourages community members to get involved by donating prizes or food, sponsoring a game booth or casino table, or volunteering to help construct the set-up and staff the event itself. All donations are tax-deductible. For more information about how to help contact Poway High School PTSA President and Grad Nite Coordinator Rachel Allums at rachelallums@yahoo.com or visit www.powayptsa.org/page-11.

The play tells the story of Bridget, who went to stay with her favorite Nana in New York for the summer, only to find out that her sweet Nana is selling hand-made naughty knickers to every senior citizen in the five boroughs! Will Bridget be able to close down the operation before Nana gets arrested – or worse – evicted? Nana’s Naughty Knickers is written by Katherine DiSavino, directed by Robyn Smith, and produced by Chris and Brenda Robinson. Katherine DiSavino has written for television and film and all three of her published plays have been translated into a number of languages and performed around the world. The 2017 Miss Poway Scholarship Pageant was held in early April at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. The winners are as follows: Gabbi Smith (Miss Poway), Dori Kamyabi (Miss Poway 1st Princess), Alexandria Follas (Miss Poway 2nd Princess), Caroline Komenda (Miss Teen Poway), Carley Matz (Miss Teen Poway 1st Princess), Chloe Rodgers (Miss Teen Poway 2nd Princess), Tessa Tricarico (Miss Teen Poway 3rd Princess), Fernanda Fabian (Miss Junior Teen Poway), Amelia Townshend (Miss Junior Teen Poway 1st Princess), and Jenna Oppel (Miss Junior Teen Poway 2nd Princess). Forty-one contestants spent nine weeks preparing for the pageant, learning things like how to write a resume, public speaking, and self defense. The girls also volunteered at two community events – the San Diego Humane Society’s Walk for Animals and the inaugural Read Across America event at Valley Elementary School. The pageant consisted of four categories for judging: private interview, gown, a “get to know you” question, and impromptu question answered on stage. An a cappella group from Poway High School performed during the Parade of Ball Gowns, and NJROTC cadets from Westview High School and ROTC Midshipman from SDSU and USD served as escorts during the gown competition. The pageant seeks to develop local young women into strong, confident, and civic-minded members of society. Learn more at www.misspoway.com. May | June 2017 • 92064 MAGAZINE.COM • 27

In 1993, Cynthia Elizondo earned her M.B.A. in International Business. She has used the knowledge she gained to start several successful entrepreneurial endeavors, but her true passion has always lain with real estate. So, when she was presented with the opportunity to follow that dream, she jumped at the chance and never looked back. Cynthia began working with Halcyon Real Estate Services so that she could help others achieve their dreams of buying and selling their first home, investment property, or simply take the next step on their journey in real estate. A certified negotiation expert, Cynthia knows exactly what it takes to make a successful deal. When representing buyers, Cynthia takes the time to learn exactly what they are looking for in a home, as well as what price they are comfortable with, in order to match them with their ideal property. When representing sellers, she thinks outside the box to negotiate deals with potential buyers, creating a winwin situation for both parties. Cynthia’s expertise especially lies with the residential areas that make up the Poway Unified School District. Growing up in Northern California, Cynthia ultimately found her dream home here in North County, where she raised two children who attended PUSD schools for over 15 years. Utilizing her familiarity with the school district and all it has to offer, Cynthia is able to provide her clients with an extensive knowledge of various schools. Ultimately, she can help clients find a home within the boundaries of the school best suited for them and their children. Following her belief that volunteerism makes for a strong community, Cynthia serves on the board of directors for the Poway Senior Center and the Poway Chamber of Commerce, and volunteers with Soroptimist International of Poway and Poway Real Estate Professionals. As a devout Catholic, Cynthia is also an active member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, where her husband serves as a deacon. In addition to English, Cynthia is also fluent in Spanish and French. And if you speak the language of wine, she is always happy to regale you with stories of being raised in the Napa Valley.

ver since he was a young boy, Mike Holguin has loved music, especially playing the drums. He joined the U.S. Navy at 18 years old with dreams of becoming a Navy musician, but it was not meant to be just then. “During my first audition, I wasn’t prepared to be a musician yet. I’ll never forget the comment at the end of the audition: ‘Mr. Holguin, you have potential, but potential isn’t what the Navy is looking for right now.’ This comment triggered something inside me and made me more drive than ever to accomplish my goals,” revealed Mike. He re-auditioned and was accepted into the Navy Music program. With the 7th Fleet Band based in Yokosuka, Japan, Mike traveled to more than 22 countries in a two-year period. After his time in the Navy, Mike began a civilian music career and established himself in the San Diego and Los Angeles music scene. He has played with Grammy Award winners like Natalie Cole and Nathan East, as well as many other well-known musicians. He currently plays drums with the Mighty Untouchables, a band that plays at The Church at Rancho Bernardo and at many community events. Over the years, Mike has established himself in the music education world. He taught at SDSU and Rancho Bernardo High and is currently the

band and worship coordinator at Maranatha Christian Schools. “There is no better feeling than hearing from a former student. I had a student who joined the military out of high school and sent me a letter from Afghanistan. He wanted me to know that he heard a song that we played years before, and started crying thinking about those great memories and what they meant to him. This emotional connection will always be the most rewarding part for me. It helps me realize that this is God’s purpose for me,” related Mike. Mike has been happily married for 24 years to his wife, Carmie, and has two children, Ronnie (23) and Jazmin (22). “Both of our kids have a passion for the performing arts. Ronnie studied music at SDSU and audio engineering at The Art Institute. He is preparing to tour the United States with an electronic dance music group. Jazmin is studying dance at Miramar College with plans of transferring to SDSU to pursue a degree in physical therapy. She currently performs with a world-class winter guard group,” stated Mike proudly. 

POWAY AUTHOR LAUNCHES NEWEST BOOK ON MARRIAGE

P

oway local Alisa DiLorenzo recently released her fifth book, Called to Love: Experiencing Your Best Marriage Through the Words of Jesus. Alisa is a sought-after marriage coach, bestselling author, speaker, and co-host of the #1 marriage podcast on iTunes, ONE Extraordinary Marriage, with her husband Tony. Alisa’s newest book takes readers on a journey through the words of Jesus, sharing passages and insights that readers can apply to their relationships every day, guiding them to a healthy and loving marriage. While Alisa and Tony have been married for 20 years, Alisa found it challenging to write about something she thought she already knew about. “I had to wrestle with how I’ve been doing marriage for 20 years. Over the course of writing this book I had to take a look at how I could improve myself instead of just going through the motions,” she said. “I came to realize that there is a deep need for marriages to be stronger, perhaps the need has never been greater, and yet so many people struggle with how to create that strong marriage.” Alisa and Tony have lived in Poway for the last 14 years. Their two children, Alex (14) and Abby (11) both attend Poway schools. The couple has previously co-authored four other books together. Called to Love is available for purchase on Amazon. are, commitment, and collaboration combine with experience and state-ofthe-art technology to make McGrady Dental Group the perfect dental home for your family. Dr. Jodi McGrady and her husband, periodontist Dr. Michael Spilotro, care for kids and parents at the same location for a convenient, comfortable experience. McGrady Dental Group offers the full spectrum of pediatric dental care. “From treatment with simple distraction and storytelling to conscious sedation or general anesthesia, treatment decisions are made with the parents to determine what best fits their child’s needs,” explained Dr. McGrady, who practiced general dentistry for 15 years before a two-year pediatric residency at UCLA. She’s been practicing pediatric dentistry for the last five years. The team also offers general dentistry – cleanings, fillings, and crowns – as well as periodontal care, extractions, and implants. “When a parent comes in with a child, I want them both to feel calm and comfortable,” Dr. McGrady said. “We live and work in the ScrippsPoway community and are very dedicated to

our patients.” Patients see the same dentists every time they visit. The brand-new office was built with the entire community in mind, including special needs patients, and incorporates the latest technology for sterilization, minimizing radiation, and handicap accessibility. Charging stations, iPads, televisions, a reading nook, and a tooth fairy garden create a fun, playful atmosphere for children. Dr. McGrady and Dr. Spilotro emphasize education and preventive care, especially for young patients, and the care continues outside the office. “Serving our community is very important to us,” Dr. McGrady shared. She and her team are involved with oral health education at three local libraries, five elementary schools, and Poway’s Boys & Girls Club. “I am involved with 1000 Smiles and treat underserved children in Ensenada, Mexico,” Dr. McGrady added. “I’m also on the staff at Rady Children’s Hospital once a week, involved in the care of children who are medically compromised or on the autism spectrum. I enjoy caring for these kids, who are society’s most fragile children.” That caring spirit is the heart of McGrady Dental Group. FROM THE ORAL SURGEON

Wise Words About Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are the last to erupt within the mouth. When they align properly and gum tissue is healthy, wisdom teeth do not have to be removed. Unfortunately, that doesn’t usually happen. They may grow sideways, partially emerge from the gum, and even remain trapped beneath the gum and bone. Impacted teeth can take many positions in the bone as they attempt to find a pathway that will allow them to erupt. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon can evaluate the position of the wisdom teeth and predict if there may be present or future problems. Patients are generally first evaluated in the mid-teenage years by their dentist, orthodontist, or an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

Once it is decided that wisdom teeth need to be removed, the patient can elect to have them removed all at once or one or two at a time. While you do not need to remove all wisdom teeth at the same time, doing so can reduce the overall recuperation time since the patient will only have to recover once versus multiple times. Depending on the complexity of the extractions, surgery can be performed under local anesthesia, where the patient is fully awake; under general anesthesia, fully asleep; or with light sedation combined with local anesthesia.

After surgery, it is important to remember the DOs and DON’Ts of recovery: DO: • Rest the day of and day after surgery; plan on half-speed the third day. • Place ice on jaws for 72 hours as directed. • Have plenty of soft foods in the fridge. DON’T: • Smoke, dip, or chew tobacco. • Use drinking straws. • Use alcohol or mouthwash. • Lift, bend, strain, or play sports. All DON’Ts apply for seven days post-surgery.

Be Wi s e A b ou t You r Wi s d om T ee t h Dr. Albert Lin and Dr. Robert Gramins offer a full scope of oral and facial surgery ranging from dental implant surgery and wisdom tooth removal to facial trauma reconstruction and facial cosmetic surgery.

Did You Know? The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons suggests timely removal of wisdom teeth during the teenage years. This is an ideal opportunity to remove impacted and unerupted teeth.

AN AFTERNOON

BY THE SEA

Discover Seaport Village + The Headquarters This Spring by SAMANTHA EDWARDS

I

f your idea of a perfect afternoon involves a lazy stroll along cobblestone pathways winding in and out of view of the Big Bay, ice cream cone in hand, while drenched in the warm Southern California sunshine, there’s a good chance we know where your head is at: Seaport Village. This 14-acre waterfront stretch is home to over 45 diverse shops, 17 eateries, and regular entertainment such as face painters, balloon artists, free outdoor concerts on Sundays, and an old-fashioned carousel – open 365 days a year. Seaport is also host to several fun events throughout the year, like the Busker Festival in the spring and San Diego Symphony’s Bayside Summer Nights concert series in the warmer months. Though sometimes characterized as a tourist destination, San Diego’s Seaport Village is ideal for visitors and locals alike. And with the recent restoration of the adjoining Old Police Headquarters (now simply called “The Headquarters”), Seaport is the perfect blend of old and new. With restaurants, specialty boutiques, and even a fully restored eight-cell jail block surrounding a central plaza, The Headquarters gives new life to what was once the central location for all police operations from 1939 to the late '80s. The Headquarters hosts a number of events throughout the year as well, such as paired food and drink tastings, pizza making classes, Salsa Under the Stars dance night, and the CincoTeca Dos fiesta. Last year the Port of San Diego launched a major redevelopment effort for Seaport Village, a move that remains controversial, in order to revitalize the area and bring in more revenue. Proposed plans include turning Seaport into a mixed-use commercial development, retaining fishing facilities, adding a hotel, and creating a better connection to the heart of downtown San Diego. The Headquarters space would not be affected. The project has not yet been approved, however, and construction would not likely begin for at least a few more years, so you still have plenty of time to get down there and experience a beautiful day at Seaport Village! ¢

he internet is changing how we do business. It has changed how we shop, how we communicate, how we book travel, and even how we watch TV. However, despite predictions to the contrary, it has not significantly changed how we buy and sell real estate. And for good reason. With the advent of public listing sites such as Zillow, Trulia, and the National Association of Realtors’ own Realtor.com, many thought it would mean the beginning of the end for the real estate business as we know it, and that Realtors would be forced to find other work. That has not happened. On the contrary, the number of active real estate agents in California has increased by 13% over the past three years (California Bureau of Real Estate). So why aren’t millennials choosing to shop for real estate the way they shop for most everything else? It all comes down to the same thing it always has for the real estate industry: trust. Anyone who

has fallen in love with the “perfect home’’ in the peaceful neighborhood they saw online, only to discover it had a junkyard next door and didn’t live up to the hype of the online description knows that pictures don’t always tell the whole story. When purchasing a pair of shoes or booking a hotel room, it is not a devastating thing to realize you made a mistake in trusting the photos and online description. But when you are making what could possibly be the biggest financial decision of your life, there is no room for error. You can’t “return it for a full refund.” That doesn’t mean buyers can’t look online! In fact, roughly 90% of homebuyers do at least some of their home searches online. But the deal isn’t done when the perfect property has been found. That’s when the agent’s job is just beginning! There are so many important factors that go into every real estate transaction; it is just too important to rely on the internet to

tell you what you need to know. Just as you wouldn’t do a Google search to learn how to fix a transmission or perform surgery on your cat, it is really not a good idea to rely on online information to lead you through escrow. Escrow is a very emotional time for both buyers and sellers, and emotions frequently get in the way of a smooth transaction, causing negotiations to break down and ultimately kill the deal. A good agent can not only give you the personal attention and advice you need, but can also be the voice of reason to help you navigate the emotional roller coaster safely, getting you to the ultimate goal of a closed deal. Bottom line, the stakes are simply too high. You can’t just click. You have to call. ¢

One Yard at a Time Evo Turf Makes a Difference with Commitment and Flexibility by KELLEY GUSICH | photos provided by Evo Enterprises, Inc.

n our environmentally conscious state of California, there are many reasons one might consider artificial turf. Beyond the obvious goal of having a green yard year-round without having to water or mow it, synthetic turf has no chemicals, no air pollution, and no bugs. Evo Turf/Evo Pavers is a synthetic turf and paver installation contractor serving Greater San Diego and Riverside counties since 2015. The three owners, Steven Lawson, Michael Mulder, and Lori Bradburn-Phillips, have professional and personal relationships spanning over a decade. “Each of us successful independently,” explained Owner/Manager Lori Bradburn-Phillips, “we realized that pooling our knowledge would provide great strength to our new business venture.” Although “This is a very Evo is primarily synthetic turf and pavers, they do provide complete landscape and competitive hardscape services for the customer who’d market, and doing like everything done by one company. a great-quality Besides the earlier list, there are many job simply isn’t other benefits to installing synthetic turf. It’s enough. We strive virtually maintenance free, and pets love it to offer great – it reduces ground fleas, dirt, and negatives associated with yardwork. There are certain customer service tax benefits involved, and California has to set us apart.” provided financing options which allow homeowners to finance a green energy improvement, for as long as 15 years! Evo Turf strives to inform customers as best they can about each person doing their part to go green, “one yard at a time!” For their own part, Evo Turf provides hybrid vehicles to the sales representatives as they are on the highways many hours per week. The business has broad connections to the community. The owners all live locally and regularly attend chamber functions and trade shows, also sponsoring a youth baseball team. A notable reflection of this company’s character came when they recently viewed a news story about a customer who’d been taken advantage of by a synthetic turf company. The other company took her money and didn’t complete the project. Evo Turf reached out to the customer – who was also a military veteran – and completed her project at no cost. “It was only one customer,” Lori said, “but something we could do as a company to help someone who was devastated financially.” Evo Turf has the flexibility needed to meet their customers’ budgets, schedules, and expectations. “This is a very competitive market,” explained Lori, “and doing a great-quality job simply isn’t enough. We strive to offer great customer service to set us apart from the rest through effective communication, having our finger on the pulse of each and every project from start to finish.” ¢ 48 • 92064 MAGAZINE.COM • May | June 2017
