It’s Not Just a Jeep!

I

’ve always loved the idea of buying an old Jeep and refurbishing it. Once, I even convinced my wife to ride with me to check out a few. After seeing them, she eventually talked some sense into me and made me realize a project of that caliber was not in our family’s best interest. Fast forward many years. Apparently, my son – soon to be getting his driver’s permit – inherited the Jeep bug. There’s no doubt that he would have preferred a brand-new Jeep, but once I let him know what new Jeeps cost, he quickly changed his mind. So, we developed a plan. We would find a used Jeep that we could refurbish together as a father-son project. The search became a near obsession. On a daily basis, my son would slide his phone in front of my face asking what about this one? For a variety of reasons, my answer was always the same – not that one. Then, about a year ago, he showed me a Jeep. It wasn’t pretty. At 29 years old, it had clearly lived a long and “fun” life. It had scrapes, dents, some rust, and a very rough interior. But it had something that caught our attention – a brand new engine and new tires! As a family, we drove down to take a look at it. I strategically requested that my wife test drive it, with our son in the passenger seat. That’s all it took! We became the proud owners of a 1989 Jeep Wrangler. My son and I slowly and meticulously began to refurbish it. We did as close to a frame-off restoration as our budget allowed. We spent many days and nights working on the Jeep. Our goal was to have every part of the Jeep that you can see look as it did when it was driven off the factory floor 30 years ago. Along the journey, my son and I spent a lot of quality time together. We laughed. We got our hands dirty. We banged up our knuckles, figured out ways to remove and replace parts that didn’t want to be removed, and definitely shared moments of frustration. And yes, there was lots of physical exhaustion and sweat! There’s no longer a tool in my toolbox that I wouldn’t trust my son to use. This project allowed my son and me to bond beyond the normal busy lives that we all know. We took turns listening to each other’s music playlist. We talked about things that would typically require a “scheduled” conversation. We worked together on a common goal, without immediate gratification. I am so thankful for the opportunity this Jeep gave us. While the obvious outcome is a 1989 Jeep Wrangler that looks better today than it did 30 years ago, it’s not just a Jeep. It’s memories. It’s pride. It’s driving something down the road that you worked on with your own hands. We will remember and talk about this project for the rest of our lives. ho knew that sibling rivalry could result in such a success story? Back when she was just a little girl, Zoë Salinas felt a strong pang of jealously when her older brother, Kai, placed ninth in the world for golfing. Wanting to prove that she could also master the sport, Zoë managed to not only win the California State Championship twice, at ages five and seven, but she also became a runner-up at the IMG World Championship at age six, and eventually won the FCG Callaway World Championship at age eight! Now that she is a 10-year-old fifth grader

at Sycamore Ridge Elementary, Zoë laughed about Kai being the impetus for her golf glory. She admitted, “My brother basically inspired me to play golf because I’ve always wanted to be better than him!” Zoë claimed that she first began playing golf “ever since I could walk,” and became entrenched in golf tournaments by age four. Zoë’s long-term goal is to hopefully attend Stanford University and play on the college golf team. Discussing the appeal of her favorite activity, Zoë proclaimed, “In golf, it doesn’t matter if you are bigger or smaller than someone else, because everyone has an equal chance to compete.” Zoë also learned a valuable mental skill while competing on the green. She revealed, “The most challenging part of golf is staying focused after you hit a bad shot. You just have to let go of the past and focus on the shot in front of you.” Utilizing her newfound self-control has

also resulted in Zoë making strides in her school’s math club. Zoë stated, “My favorite subject is math, probably because my dad is a computer scientist and he taught me the basics at an early age. My mom and dad actually met in a calculus class at Columbia University, so I feel a family connection with math!” When she isn’t working on golf or math, Zoë can be found participating in tennis tournaments, playing the piano, doodling, and enjoying the monkey bars at her school. Zoë also continues to practice her proficiency in Mandarin Chinese, which her father taught her and her brother to speak, read, and write. Zoë has proven that she is able to swing her way to a fantastic future. 

POWAY ONSTAGE SUPPORTS YOUTH ACCESS TO ARTS EDUCATION

P

oway OnStage’s 20192020 Arts in Education Initiative has plenty in store for local elementary students. Recently announced events include two bus-in shows for Poway Unified School District (PUSD) students. The first, Pirate School: Follow Your Compass, is scheduled for Oct. 9, and Catapult Shadow Dance Company will be March 29. Poway OnStage will provide study guides for the teachers attending, and performers will give Q&A sessions for students after each show. “We are so proud of this partnership with the Poway Unified School District, and excited for this year’s offerings,” said Michael Rennie, Poway OnStage President and CEO. “In addition to our more established programs, we now offer students a chance to come in to a performance with a deeper understanding of what they are about to see, and an opportunity to have

an up-close-and-personal experience with the artists.” Poway OnStage established the Arts in Education Initiative in 1999, at a time when PUSD budget cuts were substantially impacting music programs. “Our board at the time felt that as the stewards of Poway’s performing arts community, we had an obligation to respond to the reduction in arts programs in our schools,” Rennie said. The initiative continues to thrive and integrate with state standards through individual donations, corporate philanthropy, and grants. Programs include a free musical theater camp every March for grades K-12, and Introduction to Instruments for fourth graders. Learn more and sign up for programs at www.powayonstage.org/ arts-in-education. 

ince opening her first Thai restaurant in 1999, Nikki Bupha has held true to her mission of emphasizing the fresh ingredients and exotic spices of Thai food as well as the friendliness of Thai culture. STUDIO WEST

E

mbarking on a new career can be a daunting task, especially when it involves diving into a high-energy, high-profile one such as audio engineering. But switching up careers later in life is something that seemed like a “no-brainer” to several audio enthusiasts after taking part in the Electronic Production Package (EPP) at Studio West. Like their fellow classmates, these students initially enrolled in the EPP program as a fun way to expand their skills in what seemed like an after-work hobby. However, once involved in the program, what started as a hobby soon began looking more like a viable career option. “Oftentimes we see some of the more casual enthusiasts enter the program with the idea that this is for fun or good for a side business. But once they start working with our instructors, getting hands-on engineering experience in a working recording studio, we see a shift in focus. Folks with a regular 9-to5 job they aren’t 100% invested in realize that their passion can be turned into a viable

career,” explained Todd Hunsaker, Director of Admissions for The Recording Arts Center (TRAC) at Studio West. Todd explained further, “When the class is over, the next logical step to launch a career in the industry is to acquire more experience and get the in-depth training that can lead to a successful career in audio engineering. Many find this in our year-long Diploma program.” One student, Isaiah, finished the EPP program last month and immediately enrolled in the Diploma Program. His classes began on Monday, and he couldn’t be more thrilled about his choice. “It was so much fun working a real recording studio. I’m really excited about my decision to start the full program!” Don’t miss out on a new career opportunity in audio engineering – try out The Recording Art Center’s Electronic Production Package now. Classes are enrolling now, so check out the full schedule at www.studiowest.com or call 858-592-9497.

COMMUNITY STUFF

Veteran of the Year Danny Jackson was recently recognized as the 77th Assembly District’s 2019 Veteran of the Year. Danny honorably served in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division from 1969 to 1970 during the Vietnam War, followed by a 37-year career in the postal service. Now retired in San Diego, Danny continues to serve his community through the Veterans of Foreign Wars Poway Post 7907. He has worked to reduce homelessness and suicide rates among veterans, increase employment opportunities for exiting active duty military, support deported veterans and military families, as well as foster civic engagement in the electoral process. “Danny Jackson courageously served our nation and is a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal,” said Assemblymember Brian Maienschein. “I am truly grateful for his patriotic dedication to our country and its people.” Danny lives in Rancho Peñasquitos with his wife Eva. They have six children, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Snacks and Service Recognized Poway High School’s Aquatics Foundation recently recognized volunteer and master chef Trina Brown by renaming its famous Snack Shack to “Trina’s Aquashack.” The foundation surprised Trina with a new banner bearing her name at the Boys Water Polo homecoming game. “Every day there is a home game or swim meet at the pool, kids and adults alike from the entire school line up all along and spilling out of the pool deck to get a taste of her chicken teriyaki or pulled pork,” said Judith McAulay, VP of the Aquatics Foundation and Chair of the Poway High School Foundation. Trina’s Aquashack is run entirely by volunteers. To learn more and get involved, visit www.phsaquatics.com.

Poway Student Engineers Awarded

Poway High School Society of Women Engineers Next Club (PHS SWENext) recently won the Design Lab Community Engagement Challenge Grand Prize Award. The challenge asked teams to develop a hands-on engineering activity for younger students addressing a specific community need – for PHS SWENext, this was a Girls in STEM Inspiration Day for girls and their families throughout the county. Teams created videos to showcase their accomplishments, and the Poway team also won the People’s Choice Award, receiving the most public votes for their video submission. PHS SWENext’s Design Lab Community Engagement Team included Ariana Van Dusen, Cece Gant, Elena Tomson, Lilian Rueckert, Sara Wilson, and Team Captain Madalyn Nguyen, as well as CoAdvisors Rodger Dohm and Dr. Tracy Nguyen. The team decided to donate their rewards to purchase supplies for the after-school STEAM program at Monarch School for homeless youths.

Rancho Bernardo Toastmasters

Local Golf Champions Bernardo Heights Country Club held its senior men’s golf championship in mid-August. The two-day, 36-hole tournament was divided by age into four flights. The championship winner, who earned the best gross score between all the flights, was Poway’s Todd Roberts. Roberts scored 143. Last year’s winner, Rancho Bernardo resident John Price, came in second with a gross score of 149. Norm Hamlin of Scripps Ranch posted the best net score of 140. The winners for the age 55-63 flight were Roberts (143 gross) and Vince Castro of Poway (143 net). The 64-68 winners were Price (149 gross) and Peter Epstine of Escondido (144 net). The 69-72 winners were Joe McAtee of Poway (162 gross) and Hamlin (140 net). Finally, the 73 and up winners were Ernie Hoffman of Poway (168 gross) and Jin Soo Yoon of Rancho Bernardo (141 net).

Rancho Bernardo Toastmasters recently confirmed its board members for the new year. The group was founded in 1978 as an eightperson club and has grown to a group of more than 20 people attending each weekly meeting. The club’s goal is to help community members improve their communication and leadership skills. As member Tina Ayala said, “This is by far the most cost-efficient and practical way to develop confidence and experience in public speaking.” Club Secretary Ron Gross shared, “We recently had a guest tell us she learned new listening and persuasion skills from speeches that were delivered during her first visit to our Toastmasters club. She used those same skills during a job interview the following day, and she landed the job!” Vice President of Membership Bill Bee added, “Ours is a diverse group of both native and non-native English speakers, and that adds richness and depth to the speech topics and learning opportunities.” Meetings are held Thursday mornings at The Gateway in Poway, and guests are welcome. To learn more visit 112.toastmastersclubs.org or call Bill at 858-592-7994.

THE GRAUER SCHOOL

S

ituated on a six-acre natural paradise in Encinitas, alive with native plants and animals and a light coastal breeze, The Grauer School campus itself serves as the starting point for its expeditionary learning tradition. Students are encouraged to use the school campus and the world around them, from the nearby San Elijo Lagoon to Kenya, as primary resources for generating curiosity and experiencing authentic learning. Founded in 1991, Grauer focuses on helping students develop their unique voice, discover their passions, and take ownership over their own learning. The school’s founder, Dr. Stuart Grauer, noted, “We have traveled far and wide studying the world’s most inspirational schools and educational movements: Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, Socratic, free and democratic schooling, expeditionary learning and classical education, from one-room schoolhouses to Peking University. These traditions have provided us with heroes, mentors, and wisdom.” “The Grauer School uses the foundations of these great traditions and movements to infuse all we keep learning and synthesizing,” said Grauer Principal Dana Abplanalp-Diggs. “The result is a campus of purpose, optimism, and inspiration. We commit to continuing to develop the finest, most engaged, humanitarian independent

school in the world. And even though our focus is not on rankings and test scores, our students are succeeding at their top choice colleges.” Engaging students in six core values – resourcefulness, intellectual curiosity, perseverance, compassion, self-advocacy, and accountability – The Grauer School aims to develop well-rounded students who are purposeful, confident global citizens. The learning curriculum involves field trips, community service activities, art, expeditions, and student-created programs. Grauer is also the region’s only UNESCO affiliate school, with 176 partner schools around the world. Grauer’s expeditionary learning and arts programs are across the curriculum. The school also launched its Environmental Stewardship Pledge this year, dedicating the 2019-2020 school year to promoting ecological sustainability and stewardship in the school community and beyond. The resolution impacts every aspect of the school, from in- and out-ofclass curriculum to school culture and finance. “We know our students are not inheriting the world or climate we inherited,” said Grauer. “We have a moral imperative to prepare them courageously.” As the longest-serving independent school in North County San Diego, The Grauer School fosters nurturing relationships between teachers and students, giving learners 99th percentile levels of connection and engagement so that they are empowered in their education. “In a world that often seems to put standards before personal development, and to put institutional needs above human needs, Grauer keeps the focus on the individual student,” said Abplanalp-Diggs. “Our students achieve and are valued because they are developing personal passions, and teens coming of age are finding their unique voices at Grauer.” 

THE BISHOP’S SCHOOL

F

rom the border to Oceanside, The Bishop’s School brings together a diverse and thriving student and faculty population. The School was founded in 1909 as a girls’ boarding school when sisters Ellen Browning Scripps and Eliza Virginia Scripps joined Bishop Joseph Horsfall Johnson to create an institution committed to an ideal that still holds true today: School should be an “open door to knowledge.” In 1971, the School merged with the San Miguel School for Boys. Today, Bishop’s serves 800 students in grades 6 through 12. San Diego’s only independent middle and high school affiliated with the Episcopal Church, Bishop’s is an inclusive community where students come from more than 70 schools representing diverse religious, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. This school year, 49 percent of students self-identify as people of color and 20 percent receive more than $3 million in financial aid. Chaplain Nicole Simopoulos-Pigato said, “We emphasize compassion for all people, respect for the dignity of every human being, and the calls to love our neighbors as ourselves and to strive for justice and peace in the world.” Bishop’s programs are designed to meet students’ individual needs – both academically and emotionally, as student well-being is the top priority. Academic options, levels and paths are offered to best fit every student’s abilities, interests and potential, ensuring readiness and success in college and beyond. Opportunities extend beyond the classroom, including academic competitions, international travel, a peer support group, affinity groups, guest speakers and a community service program, to name a few. There are 72 different sports teams, 40 performing arts shows per year in dance, theater, and choral and instrumental music, and visual arts possibilities from photography to animation and more. Learning, leading and acting with open hearts and minds, Bishop’s students engage in the classroom, the community, and the world. 

MONTESSORI CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER

M

ontessori Child Development Center (MCDC) equips preschool and kindergarten children to create extensive knowledge of their world through exploration and observation. The child-centered environment encourages children to be self-motivated and behave as active participants in their own learning. Students work individually or in small, self-selected groups, where they teach, collaborate, and help each other. Highly qualified teachers observe and offer direction and support while promoting independence, self-direction, and self-discipline, resulting in children who are engaged in learning and eager to advance. Learning at MCDC extends beyond the classroom to the gifts of the natural world. Situated in a large house re-designed for school use, surrounded by trees, vegetable and flower gardens, selected farm animals, and a grassy play area, the Montessori environment gives children the opportunity to grow emotionally, socially, cognitively, and creatively. “I believe young children thrive in an educational environment where they are treated like the unique individuals they are and are guided by teachers who love children and understand their needs,” said Marijane Schafer, Founder and Director of MCDC Poway. “I opened the school in 1978 to provide parents in our community with a quality educational alternative for their children. We have remained intentionally small so that we can maintain a close relationship with the children and their families. As ever, the staff and I are committed to giving every child an opportunity to discover and develop to their potential.” 

ST. GREGORY THE GREAT CATHOLIC SCHOOL

L

ocated on 10 elevated acres in Scripps Ranch, St. Gregory the Great Catholic School is a K-8 elementary school and preschool community offering a faith-based educational curriculum that seeks to foster Christian values, inspire academic excellence, and encourage global awareness through service to others. At St. Gregory the Great Catholic School, each child is recognized and appreciated for their unique qualities and supported in developing their God-given gifts and talents. All aspects of the school environment are infused with Catholic values. Each day begins with outdoor community prayer, prayers for special intentions, reflection on the Catholic virtue of the week, reflection on special feast days and seasons in the liturgical year, salute to the flag, and patriotic song. Twice a month, the school community celebrates liturgy at the parish church four miles from the St. Gregory campus. Students are involved in liturgy preparation and actively participate at mass in various capacities. The school curriculum incorporates spiritual, cognitive, emotional, and kinesthetic learning experiences through teaching of six core subjects

(religion, language arts, literature, mathematics, social studies, and science), as well as fine arts and physical education. The religion curriculum is aligned with the Diocesan Curriculum Course Content Guidelines, as are all other subjects. “The combination of both Common Core Standards and Diocesan Curriculum Guidelines makes for a challenging academic program with an integrated Catholic identity,” said Principal Maeve O’Connell. Stewardship and service are also integral to the Catholic identity. Students organize, plan, and participate in a wide variety of local and global service opportunities throughout the school year. “Our students are called to be productive citizens who recognize their ability to make a difference in our world today and in the future,” affirmed Principal O’Connell. St. Gregory the Great Catholic School is WCEA/ WASC-accredited. Faculty and staff embrace all learning styles and work to develop instructional strategies to meet each student’s individual needs. Above all, students are inspired to realize their Godgiven potential and embrace a faith-filled future of leadership, stewardship, and lifelong learning. 

id you know that The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends all children visit the dentist by age one, or six months after their first tooth comes in? Dr. Sambath Tiep, known as Dr. Sam, knows that lifelong dental health is a result of starting children young with a pediatric dentist, whose specialized knowledge helps gain the child’s trust and ensures successful, frequent future visits. At Dr. Sam’s new Poway facility, Bright Pediatric Smiles, she’s even introduced a program called Bright Start, where uninsured patients ages two and under receive a free initial exam and cleaning. The program underscores Dr. Sam’s commitment to community and partnering with families every step of the way. Starting by sitting in an open bay of dental chairs where the child can see other patients cooperating and learning about dental care – or in a bright blue or green room for families who want more privacy – Bright Pediatric Smiles is the place! Dr. Sam provides tooth-colored fillings, digital x-rays, nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and minimally invasive options. “We go out of our way and take the time to help young patients and their families have positive and enjoyable experiences from the minute they enter our door,” she explained. A patient’s visit to Bright Pediatric Smiles starts with a big smile, and the child can pick their favorite flavor of fluoride and animal (that will make sense once they’re in the chair!), watch movies on the ceiling, and finish the fun with a trip

POWAY TEAM GOES UNDEFEATED AT WESTERN NATIONAL TOURNAMENT

T

he Poway Girls Softball League 12U Gold team won the USA Softball Western National Tournament, held in Medford, OR this year. They competed against 32 other teams from California, Hawaii, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. The Poway players went undefeated throughout the tournament, winning each of the eight games they played and scoring a total of 55 runs. Their overall season record is 38-9. The team’s roster is Alison Newman, Allie Reese, Danica Dean, Emma Enoch, Kaitlin Surber, Mackenzie Latker, Madison Loper, Mya McGowan, Reese Catton, Sofia Carter, and Sophia Burmeister. They bonded together over their shared victories and challenges over the course of the season – including facing off against the Bonita Valley team in the semi-finals and finals,

after failing to beat them previously in the season. “I have to admit we were nervous, but we dug down deep and pulled out another win,” explained Alison Newman. “To go undefeated in Nationals and claiming the title of National Champion was the biggest accomplishment I could ever ask for and to do it with my friends!” “My most challenging game was pitching seven innings in the semi-final against Bonita Valley,” agreed Allie Reese. “It was an intense one run game, against great hitters, but we played solid defense, and I had eight strike outs, and we won 4-3!” Many of the players have played on teams together before this season. “One of the hardest things about the season was knowing this was the last season I would play with some of my best friends,” said Sophia Burmeister. “I’m so glad we made an everlasting memory for both the league and ourselves! These are my softball sisters.” 

Selling a Home in Probate

A

lthough no one likes to think about what will happen after they pass away, it is something we all need to consider, as well as what will happen to our assets. For most of us, our home is our most valuable asset, and it is therefore often the first thing added to a will, and frequently it is “given” to the heirs, to be divided up equally. But how do you divide up a house? The most obvious answer is to sell the house and divide the proceeds. Simple, right? Not so simple. Unless the will specifically states that the real property is to be sold and by whom, the sale will have to go through probate court. This can be lengthy and difficult, but still doable. Regardless, all beneficiaries must be informed of the sale of the property, and the price at which it will be listed. Once an offer has been accepted, if all the beneficiaries agree to the sale in writing, the sale may proceed without a

court hearing. If, however, there is an objection by one or more beneficiaries, the sale will need to be confirmed by a confirmation hearing, and the buyer could be “outbid” by another interested party. Furthermore, the property must be professionally appraised before it can be sold, and in California the final sale price must be at least 90% of the appraised value. Since the estate must continue to make payments on any mortgages, property taxes, and insurance on the property, it can get expensive for the property to remain unsold for very long. Selling a property during probate can be long and complicated, as well as potentially risky. Hire both an estate attorney and a licensed Realtor to minimize the risk. Of

HIKING SAN DIEGO Explore New Hiking Trails in North County by SAMANTHA EDWARDS

W

ith temperature highs hovering comfortably in the 70s, the fall months are the perfect time to get out and explore local hiking trails. North County has something for everyone, from relaxed walking paths to challenging hills. So lace up your hiking boots and enjoy the view! 

LOS PEÑASQUITOS CANYON PRESERVE

COAST TO CREST TRAIL

With relatively flat trail routes, a hike through the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve is great for all ages and skill levels. You’re sure to see much of the canyon’s wide variety of flora and fauna, as well as creeks, streams, and a waterfall cascading through volcanic rock. www.penasquitos.org

With about 48 miles of the planned 71 total miles completed, this trail extends from the ocean in Del Mar to the Volcan Mountain near Julian and contains eight sections with many smaller trails of varying intensity. www.sdrp.org

TORREY PINES STATE NATURAL RESERVE The main reserve area has six different trails hugging the coastline with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and acres of rare Torrey pine trees, making Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve a must on a sunny day. www.torreypine.org

DOUBLE PEAK Starting at Discovery Lake Park in San Marcos, this moderate five-mile loop trail offers panoramic views of North County at the summit. Much of the brush along the trail was burned by fires, so there is little shade on this route. www.san-marcos.net

46 • 92064 MAGAZINE.COM • October | November 2019

DO:

BLACK MOUNTAIN While Black Mountain Open Space Park contains many chaparral and sage-lined hiking trails, Black Mountain itself is only accessible by two trailheads. It’s a moderate hike to the summit, which provides 360-degree views of the surrounding area, even out to the ocean on clear days. www.sandiego.gov

IRON MOUNTAIN This popular six-mile round trip hike is moderately difficult, with a clearly marked trailhead and boulder-lined trail leading to expansive views at the summit. www.poway.org

• Use sun protection • Bring water • Hike with a partner or group • Carry a cell phone in case of an emergency • Check the website for possible trail closures • Respect local habitats and stay on the trail

DON’T: • Pick flowers or plants • Feed wild animals • Litter • Vandalize rocks or trees

MOUNT WOODSON A photo op on the famed Potato Chip Rock awaits hikers at the peak of this strenuous eightmile round trip hike. This hike is recommended for experienced hikers only and should be started early in the day. www.poway.org
