Wine or Spirits, Anyone?

W

e’ve been discussing the idea of having a special issue showcasing the local wine and distillery scene for quite some time. A few years ago, we published a brewery issue that received a lot of attention. In this issue, we are proud to be able to profile a variety of local wineries and distilleries in our First Annual Wine & Spirits Guide. Before we could put together a special Wine & Spirits issue, we had to do some research and a lot of homework. As you could imagine, this project involved visiting many local wineries and distilleries. We encountered very enthusiastic proprietors who were eager to give us tours, explain their processes, and tell us about the history of their establishment and their personal journey. And then there was the wine and spirits sampling – of course we had to sample the products personally! What kind of research project wouldn’t involve sampling? It just seemed like the polite thing to do. We were surprised to learn that there are wineries and distilleries in just about every corner of San Diego County. While most of the distilleries have an urban feel, the wineries were a bit more diverse. There are urban wine tasting rooms that do a fantastic job of sharing their wine. There are small wineries and large wineries. Country wineries and city wineries. Wineries with their own vineyards, and wineries that have offsite vineyards. The bottom line is that there are all types of establishments, and all of them are definitely worth a visit. Derrick Breaux The ZCode Team would like to thank all the local wineries Publisher and distilleries that took the time to meet with us and open their doors (and bottles). And we would like to give a special shout out to the wineries and distilleries that shared our vision and chose to participate in this first Wine & Spirits issue. There wouldn’t have been an issue without these participants, so be sure to put them on your short list to visit (and tell them that ZCode Magazines sent you). Until next time… Cheers!

All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

ernanda Fabian relishes being involved in her community. Born and raised in Poway, this talented teen is a recent graduate of Meadowbrook Middle School. At middle school, she had many opportunities to shine. “I have been recognized for achievements such as maintaining a 4.0 GPA for all three years at Meadowbrook, while still competing in rhythmic gymnastics and being a member of the national team for aesthetic group gymnastics in the U.S.,” shared Fernanda. She was also part of the AVID program, where she not only learned essential academic and real-world skills, but was the AVID Standout for 2018. Because of this program, she was able to attend a Poway Unified School District board meeting. “I learned so much about everything that happens ‘behind the scenes’ in order to keep our schools up and running,” she said. School is not Fernanda’s only passion. She is an accomplished gymnast and participates in Aesthetic Group Gymnastics, which is a combination of dance, acrobatics, and gymnastics. “We have already competed in Finland, Canada, and Budapest,” related

Finally, she served as the fourth ever Miss Junior Teen Poway for an entire year. “As Miss Junior Teen Poway 2017, I attended my first city council meeting, and met all the amazing people that keep our community safe and clean,” she said.

“My two sisters are my best friends and are both very inspiring to me.” Family is very important to Fernanda. “I am the second of three children and was raised by my hardworking mother, along with my grandma,” she explained. “My two sisters are my best friends and are both very inspiring to me.” Both her mother and sisters inspire her to do her best. As an incoming freshman at Poway High School, Fernanda is looking forward to meeting new people and learning more about how she can help her community. She has a long-term goal of going to law school to become a lawyer. “Although I come from a family with a single parent, I will work my hardest to achieve my goal,” she declared. With her ambition, drive, and family support, there is no doubt that Fernanda will accomplish any goal she sets for herself. 

PowPAC Presents A Christmas Carol Take part in a holiday tradition this year with A Christmas Carol, presented by PowPAC, Poway’s Community Theatre. Crystal Gardens Florist Grand Re-Opening This fall marks both a celebration of tradition and a new beginning for Poway’s Crystal Gardens Florist. The store recently moved to a new location at Poway City Centre, where it celebrated its 34th anniversary on Sept. 15. The new location is 600 square feet larger, allowing for much-appreciated extra storage and work space, shared owner Jeannie Hume. Formerly the Company Pub and Kitchen, the location took some remodeling to transform from a restaurant to a flower shop, but the Crystal Gardens Florist family is now ready and eager for a busy holiday season. Crystal Gardens Florist is now located at 13654 Poway Rd., Suite 180. Find out more at www.crystalgardensflorist.com.

Local students at St. Michael’s Church afterschool Religious Education program are running a donation drive for their Advent Service Project. Collected items will be delivered to the Trinitarians of Mary, an order of nuns founded in 1992 in Tecate, Mexico. The nuns will distribute the donated items to area residents in need. Items needed include: soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, dental floss, feminine hygiene items, lotion, deodorant, and razors. Donations will be accepted through Dec. 12, with collection boxes on the patio of the school’s Religious Education office at 15546 Pomerado Rd. For more information call 858-485-1392.

home to California s first recorded vineyards, planted in the 1700s by Father Junipero Serra. Today, the county boasts over 115 wineries – and more history to be savored with every glass. Our beautiful climate is a key factor for the success of local vineyards, and diverse conditions allow a wide variety of grapes to flourish. Wine grapes tend to be hardier and more water-efficient than other crops, giving them an advantage during drier years. San Diego-grown wines include Albarino, Cabernet Franch, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Grenache, Merlot, Sangiovese, Syrah, Tempranillo, Viognier – the list goes on! THE MORE YOU KNOW A hybrid is two grape types genetically crossed, while a blend combines two grape varieties after fermentation. Terroir is the natural environment for a particular wine – including soil, farming techniques, and climate. A vintage is a specific year or harvest. whiskey and rum, San Diego s 14+ craft distilleries are raising a glass to large manufacturers, producing highquality small-batch varieties with local ingredients and distinct flavor. Craft distilleries have been allowed to operate tasting rooms only since January of 2017, even further expanding their local reach. Stop in to learn more about the distillation process and get better acquainted with what's going in your cocktail. THE MORE YOU KNOW Grapes aren't just for wine. Vodka can be made from any sugar or starch source – wheat, corn, potatoes, or fruit. Gin is essentially flavored vodka, but must have a predominant flavor of juniper. Generally speaking, whiskey (with an “e”) refers to American and Irish spirits, while whisky (no “e”) refers to spirits made in Scotland, Canada, Japan, or elsewhere.

ven the name says mellow relaxation and big deep breaths: Koi Zen Cellars. This craft urban winery in the heart of Carmel Mountain Ranch has a vibe unlike any other. Like stepping into your best friend’s home, Koi Zen Cellars is a special place for patrons to ‘uncork, sip back, and relax.’ Owner and winemaker Darius Miller’s life was run by pressure for many years, to the point it almost did him in with a stress-induced stroke. After honing his self-taught skills, Darius turned his passion for winemaking from a small-scale project into a beautiful business, allowing guests to reconnect, be in the moment, and take time (and a great glass of wine) to themselves. Koi Zen Cellars’ welcoming and warm ambiance has turned it into a community hangout for wine loving people. Co-owner Lisa Miller attends the Sonoma State Wine Business program, while steward Jon is a Level 1 sommelier en route to his Level 2. Steward Cat comes from the hospitality industry, and “Her infectious smile is loved by all,” Lisa confirmed. Koi Zen sources their grapes from growers throughout California, “giving guests a unique taste experience from all the major wine regions in the state.” Koi Zen creates fruit-forward, approachable, lively, and fun

full-bodied wines – Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Rhone-style reds and red blends among the broad-spectrum list of choices. Their most popular offerings include Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier, and Zinfandel. The San Diego U-T readers’ poll awarded Koi Zen the best local winery for two years running, and their wines have won awards in competitions from local to international, earning points in the 90s. They give back to local charities and schools by hosting fundraisers. Koi Zen even received the Think Local First championship in 2017 by the San Diego North Business Chamber. Their fundraising efforts and Holiday Gift Extravaganza, coupled with hosting local musicians on the weekends and active memberships in local networking groups and the North San Diego Business Chamber, highlight the business as involved community members. Their tasting room and winery can double as a unique event space for corporate, private, and holiday events. Currently Koi Zen has entered their Crush season, processing 96,000 lbs. of grapes – equivalent to 3,000 cases of wine! They’ll be releasing a Petite Verdot and a few others for the cooler winter months, along with a Frenchstyle Stainless Chardonnay. 

ince 2007, Principe di Tricase Winery has been making wine the traditional way – no added ingredients or sulfites. “We believe that grape juice should be the only ingredient in wine,” explained owner Alfredo Gallone. Alfredo is committed to making the wine the “ancient way,” following in the footsteps of small-country wineries in Italy. Pairing the rustic, old-world style winery with Italian family ambience makes a tasting at Principe di Tricase an unforgettable experience. The winery offers a selection of Italian wines, including Aglianico, Nebbiolo, Aleatico, Barbera, Sangiovese, and Moscato. “Our Dark Rose Aglianico rosé style is very unique,” Alfredo explained. “Aglianico is one of the most ancient wine grapes with a special self-preserving capability that is transferred into the wine, giving it a very characteristic flavor.” A number of their wines have been awarded medals from both national and international wine competitions. Principe di Tricase complements their Italian selection with a number of French wines. The wine list includes Petit Sirah, Sirah, Cabernet Franc, Cab Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. Since the arrival from Italy of daughter Raffaella and son-in-law Alberto, wine tastings are hosted Thursdays through Sundays. It’s a family affair, and Alfredo, Alberto, and Raffaella are proud to personally host guests. They’re joined by Joaco Sanz, a 25-year veteran of the wine industry in Spain. Joaco may look familiar to some as he has been on a number of TV shows about wine and wine pairings. “He was known as ‘El Professor Del Vino,’” Alfredo shared, “the wine professor.” Tasting flights start at $10, but the tasting fee is waived with the purchase of a bottle of wine. Balsamic vinegars and olive oils are also produced in house and available for purchase. A unique pairing on the winery property is the Highland Valley Christmas Tree Farm. “Since we purchased the property, we have been selling Christmas trees, continuing a long tradition,” Alfredo said. For many years, families have been choosing and cutting their Christmas trees on the property. “The smile on the children’s and parents’ faces makes it worthwhile.” Producing excellent wines and maintaining their strong Italian family ambiance are priorities at the winery. “Principe di Tricase and our family are here for you,” Alfredo said. “Please come and visit us and share in the love of excellent wines and an unforgettable experience.” 

reezy days full of sun, cool nights, and rocky soils make Ramona a perfect place to grow wine grapes of exceptional quality and why Ramona Valley is recognized as a designated viticultural area by the federal government. With more than 100 vineyards and over 35 wineries dedicated to crafting unique small-batch wines, Ramona is becoming known around the world as San Diego’s wine country. Crystal Hill Vineyard is one of the newer estate wineries to open its doors. Founded in 2014 with four acres of vines, they have already produced several award winners by focusing on quality at every step of the winemaking process. The founders, Scott and Miki Warner, take a holistic approach to vineyard management and production. They use only organic fertilizers and manage the land towards natural sustainability. “We make the wine in the vineyard,” said Scott. “In other words, what you taste in the bottle is the flavor of that soil enhanced by the story of the season – its challenges and its triumphs.”

ZCODE MAGAZINES WINE & SPIRITS GUIDE 2018

Crystal Hill features great views from its spacious outdoor patio and large porch. There’s also an indoor tasting room with an art gallery and restroom. The service is first class and the vibe is relaxing. They also offer a free tour of the vineyards and cellar with a guide that explains their approach to winemaking and how each piece of winery equipment is used. They currently offer a Chardonnay, a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Syrah, and two Merlots. Each of the wines includes a description of how it was made and from the tour you’ll learn about the special care that goes into every bottle they produce. For food, they provide some munchies with a wine tasting and also offer a cheese plate for $12. You can even bring your own food and make it a picnic! A wine tasting is $10 or free when you purchase one or more bottles of wine. Crystal Hill is dog-friendly, kid-friendly, and has ample parking. There’s space for groups up to 40 – just call ahead to reserve your seating and book your free tour. 

ernardo Winery is a piece of San Diego history, producing San Diego-grown wine for three generations. Enjoy the ambiance of old California and rustic charm. The Kitchen, a Sicilian-California style restaurant, offers exceptional fresh hand-made pasta and brick-oven pizzas, recipes inspired by the Rizzo family. Explore the winery, gardens, and village of unique shops in the winery courtyard. Bernardo Winery is also the perfect backdrop for weddings, special events, the weekly farmers market, and regular live music. “At Bernardo Winery, our winemakers Ross Rizzo and Matty Ward strive to produce wines that best suit the San Diego terroir, wines that love our soil and our sunshine,” shared Samantha Nawrocki, Director of Marketing. “It allows them to play with some interesting varietals that thrive in a Mediterranean, warm climate.” Bernardo Winery produces beautiful silky, full-bodied reds like the Syrah, as well as whites like Albarino and Viognier that burst out flavor notes of citrus and creamy vanilla. Regulars on the tasting menu include Syrah and Petite Sirah, Grenache, Cabernet Franc, Zinfandel, Merlot, Malbec, and Sangiovese for the reds.

For whites, Albarino, Viognier, Chardonnay and Muscat are eager to dig their roots in and call San Diego home. San Diego was, after all, the first place that grapes were planted in California, and they thrive well here from the vine to the bottle. “We still, at Bernardo Winery, after 130 years, make our wines in the same traditional ways,” Samantha said, “while utilizing new technology and viticulture practices to produce wines that truly represent the region today.” 

hough the Forgotten Barrel tasting room in Escondido opened in 2017, the property itself is steeped in history. Forgotten Barrel Winery occupies a historic winery, which was established in 1886 as one of the first vineyards in San Diego County and Southern California. It was then purchased by George Ferrara in 1928 and re-opened in 1932 with the passage of the 21st Amendment ending prohibition. During the following 75 years, Ferrara Winery grew to prominence in the California wine industry, and was designated a California historic point of interest in the late 1970s and a historic site by the City of Escondido in 1989. It was operated by three generations of the Ferrara family until 2010. Forgotten Barrel Owner Rodger Grove purchased the winery in 2016, working hard to restore this historic property while continuing to tell the story of the Ferrara family. The winery now offers wines produced on location in Escondido as well as wines produced at its Napa Valley winery. Forgotten Barrel’s winemaker sources grapes from Napa, Sonoma, Central California, and San Diego County. The property’s rustic charm provides a one-of-a-kind setting for weddings, birthday parties, or corporate events, either in the barrel room or in one of its outdoor venues. Forgotten Barrel is proud to be part of the history of the Escondido and San Diego County wine industry. For more information visit www.ForgottenBarrel.com. 

Is Homework Taking Too Much Time? THE BAD NEWS: If school has always been hard for your child, this year won’t be better unless you do something else. The truth is that nothing will be better – in fact it will keep getting worse – until learning issues are solved permanently. THE GOOD NEWS: Real and permanent solutions are available! Learning problems are caused when a child’s underlying processes are not working as efficiently as they could. This can be changed. With specific training in these processes, your child can become an independent and confident learner.

IS THIS YOUR CHILD? • Has difficulty learning to decode? • Has slow and laborious reading skills? • Finds the common core math difficult because it requires so much reading? • Has difficult showing comprehension in writing? • Has messy handwriting? • Requires ongoing tutoring to become successful?

POWAY’S TOM LIGUORI IS A TALENTED ARTIST AND PASSIONATE PHILANTHROPIST

by MICHELLE TREMBLAY

F

or the past 27 years, Tom Liguori and his wife, Susie, have lived and raised their family on their ranch in Poway. “Susie and I love the peace and tranquility of the country and the beautiful mountain views, while at the same time being a short distance to all the amenities of both a small and large city,” described Tom. “It’s an honor to be a long-time Poway resident.” Tom – originally from The Bronx, NY – moved to San Diego many years ago to obtain his MBA from San Diego State University. He eventually landed a CEO position with National Pen, where he had two functional roles: research/development and strategy. “I had to use both my right and left brain, combining creative thought and strategy,” Tom explained. The company was ultimately sold, and it was at that time that Tom started dabbling in art. “I started with acrylics on canvas, but wanted to create something different with a unique selling proposition,” described Tom. “I discovered cell art and took six years of research and development to develop a resin that would give me the effect I was looking for.” That was the start of his visual arts career. Today, Tom creates two distinct types of art: cell art and holography art. In cell art, Tom uses resin to pour onto canvas, all the while manipulating the canvas to reshape the cells as they form into beautiful and unique shapes. “It is a wonderful and exciting process and really gets the creative juices flowing,” shared Tom. With holography, Tom creates striking threedimensional images on large glass plates. For this process Tom works in a cave-like underground art studio. “The cave is a 20- by 40-foot work area, vibration-free, and insulates noise and temperature, all of which are necessary components to creating large-format holography,” Tom explained. Tom’s passion for art is fueled by his instinct to give back. Since March 2017, Tom has generated $163,000 from his artwork sales – all of which Tom has donated to charity. “I’m hoping to raise $1 million in donations in the coming years,” he added. Tom recently exhibited his work at Art San Diego in Del Mar, and will be donating holographic ornaments to Rady’s Tree of Dreams in December. “I find the creative process to be exciting, inspiring, intriguing, and compelling all at the same time,” shared Tom. “After a piece is completed, when others look at it and share an emotional response it is very gratifying to have evoked a deep reaction in people that share my love of the work.” 

POWAY VALLEY WATER POLO SENDS FOUR TEAMS TO JUNIOR OLYMPICS by KELLEY GUSICH

T

his year at the Junior Olympics held at Stanford University, Poway Valley Water Polo (PVWP) sent four teams: the 16U boys, 12U boys, 14U girls, and the 10U co-ed team. While they all were incredibly competitive in this high-level contest, the 10-and-under co-ed team took fourth place nationally – the highest result reached by the club so far. PVWP is a nonprofit athletic club operating in facilities in the North County of San Diego, primarily at high schools Del Norte, Rancho Bernardo, and Poway. When asked about their favorite experience at the Junior Olympics, goalie Ben Looges explained, “My favorite JO experience this year was playing some really good competitive teams – the best game was when we beat the Navy team!” He is an upcoming junior at Poway High, and

has been playing water polo for five years. Freshman Lexi Burg has been playing for three years, and she enjoyed watching the older brackets compete. She shared, “The older teams are an inspiration for me to be the best I can be, in hopes of making the high school team and advancing to higher levels of play.” Goalie Oren Penning, a Design39Campus student, confirmed this outlook: “My favorite experience in the Junior Olympics this year was playing against very hard teams and getting fourth place in the country.” Oren and field player Jaden Tijam are likely to be All-Americans as PVWP continues to expand in size and elevate its level of play. STUDIO WEST OFFERS AFTER SCHOOL WORKSHOPS FOR STUDENTS A

s the new school year begins, students are once again getting to create music at a world-class recording studio by participating in the Studio West After School Workshops. The workshops are led by Andy Walsh, who has been associated with Studio West for over 10 years and brings a wealth of experience as a producer, engineer, and musician. Andy is a 2012 graduate of our own music production program and also holds a B.A. in Music Humanities from UCSD but, most importantly, he creates an amazing environment for students to explore their musical creativity. The workshops center around collaborative and individual projects that challenge students, giving them the tools they need to make their musical ambitions a reality. Students develop their skills by listening to and critically analyzing

the music they love. From this insight, along with the experience of working in Studio West’s professional recording facility, students have the unique opportunity to make recordings that bring their creative visions to fruition. Students meet weekly for 90 minutes in focused groups of three to six students analyzing music, working on original compositions and arrangements, and ultimately recording their performances in the amazing studios. Students learn production techniques and get hands-on time with industry standard hardware and software packages such as Ableton Live and Pro Tools. Recruitment is ongoing and Andy and the Studio West team are always happy to offer tours of the studio to interested students. We look forward to hearing from you! 

A Better Way to Buy Contingent

I

f you are contemplating a move up or down in home size, or just a move across town, you have probably spent hours pouring over real estate websites, looking for “the perfect house.” Chances are, you have found one you love. And if you were truly interested, you may have even contacted your Realtor to put in an offer on it, saying that if the offer gets accepted, you will sell your current home. I get calls like this every week. And I am happy to write up that offer for my clients. Sadly, though, offers like this rarely get accepted, and my friends lose out on another “perfect” home. The fact is, even in this shift towards a buyer’s market, sellers are still reluctant (if not adamantly opposed) to accepting any

offers that require the buyer to sell their own property. In fact, as the number of days it currently takes to sell a home in Poway has risen to over 30 days, sellers know that means more time their own house will have to be off the market, and they are not willing to take that risk. And then, if your home sells for less than anticipated, the whole deal may fall through anyway. But there is another option. You can sell contingent. The way this works is to put your current home on the market, wait for a buyer, then write it into the contract

offer on the new home, you can sometimes offer less money, and since you are not “desperate” to get your home sold, you don’t need to accept lower offers on your own home. You still end up with the perfect home, but you have more money in your pocket when the deals are done! Ready to give it a try? Call me! 

that you will not close escrow until you are able to find and purchase an acceptable replacement home. This allows you to get out of the contract if you are unable to find that perfect house. It also takes the guesswork out of the equation, since you know exactly what the sales price will be on your home. Then, sellers are more willing to accept your offer, since they know it is already in escrow. The best part of doing things in this order is it puts the bargaining power in your hands.
