It’s a Miracle!
F
Derrick Breaux Publisher
or the better part of last year, our two youngest kids (9 and 10 years old) have been asking for pet hamsters. My wife and I had several conversations about it and ultimately decided that we would succumb to the request. After all, isn’t owning and taking care of hamsters part of the magical childhood experience? Isn’t it supposed to teach responsibility – and all of that other stuff that kids need to learn the hard way? So, a couple of days before Christmas, my wife headed to the pet store and came home with, not one, but two male Roborovski hamsters (the smallest of the dwarf hamsters). I have to admit, the little guys are very cute. Needless to say, they were the hit of the gift exchange. Fast Forward 15 Days. My daughter had a friend over for a play date. All of a sudden, I heard high pitched shrieks and screams (which aren’t that uncommon during these play dates) coming from upstairs followed by the inevitable rumbling of footsteps running down the stairs. Both girls were screaming at the top of their lungs, “The boy hamster is having babies! How can a boy hamster have babies? Oh my goodness. What should we do? What should we do?” Chuckling and with a bit of a dismissive attitude, I let them know that this was literally impossible. However, upon further observation, I realized that the impossible had in fact happened. It was a miracle! The “boy” hamster was definitely giving birth – not to one baby, but to a litter of six little hamsters. The Breaux household went into immediate lockdown. Chaos had officially set in. Once word of the miracle hit the streets, parents and other friends were quickly en route to check out the new little guys. There were even talks of live hamster cams. Life as we know it would clearly not be the same. As family and friends gathered to see the modern day miracle, I immediately began consulting with Google (knower of all things) to try to figure out how this could have happened. Google responded by letting me know that the gestation period for ‘Robo’ hamsters is about 22 days. This meant that the “boy” hamster was pregnant when we purchased her. This information prompted additional questions. I put more intense pressure on Google to get to the bottom of the mystery. Is the other hamster also a female? If not, should we separate them? Google was a bit indecisive in this area, so we ultimately decided to move the hamster of unknown sex into its own cage the next day, especially once we realized that the mother had already exiled it into a distant corner of the cage. It seemed like the right thing to do. Fast Forward 21 Days. Since Google had instructed us not to mess with the baby hamsters, we merely observed for several weeks while contacting friends who might be interested in adopting some of the critters. The hamster cam idea had also been overridden because we couldn’t quite figure out how to make it work (code phrase for “I was lazy”). The baby hamsters were now weaned from the mother and running around. They were as cute as you can imagine. Control of the Breaux household had now been regained. Fast Forward One More Day. I received an unexpected text message from my wife, “Our boy hamster (I can’t repeat all of her words) just had SIX MORE BABIES!” I realized we had officially lost control once again – in fact, it seems we were never in control after all. Talks of hamster cams resumed. Visitors stopping by to see the new miracle babies stepped up to an all-time high. We did Facebook posts. We hit the phones. Desperate emails were sent out. We needed more people to adopt more hamsters! At the end of all of the excitement, there are two things that I am now certain of. For starters, the mother hamster is officially not a boy. Additionally, the other original hamster is definitely not a girl. Other than that, all I can do is enjoy the chaos and laugh.

MEET RANCHO SANTA FE RESIDENT FELICIA VIEIRA, THE PRESIDENT OF CRAFTED COCKTAILS by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos by Soul of Photography
F
elicia Vieira has always loved to entertain, both for friends and family and as a part of her work with charitable organizations. She is known for her attention to detail, her delicious dishes, which use the freshest ingredients, and her cocktail mixes. “When I was traveling all over the country and experiencing unique flavors provided in high-level bars or restaurants, I would try to mimic the flavor profile in my own recipes at home. I gravitated toward making low-calorie, all-natural, and 100% agave mixes. Soon my cocktail mixes were being requested at parties and events. From there, Crafted Cocktails was born,” related Felicia. Over the last year Felicia has worked with her team and manufacturers to ensure that the business can expand over time. Felicia interned in college for an event coordinator and almost opened her own event planning business right out of college. She decided, however, to place that dream on hold until she had more business experience. Felicia was a department manager at Macy’s, in human resources for technology companies during the technology boom years, and has worked as a career coach. “I have gained a lot of knowledge that has helped prepare me for opening my own company. At this point in my career, I feel that I am wellrounded in business development, growth, human relations, and consumer

understanding. I have mentored many clients in starting their own successful businesses and thought it was time to take my own risk and believe in myself,” explained Felicia. It is also important to note that the entrepreneurial spirit is in Felicia’s blood. Both sets of her grandparents came to the United States in pursuit of the American dream. “My Portuguese grandfather got into farming and cattle-raising, and to this day, family members continue that tradition with running their own businesses or contract agencies in the dairy and farming industries. My Mexican grandfather began one of the first farming contracting companies in the San Joaquin Valley,” stated Felicia. When Felicia is not working on growing the Crafted Cocktails brand and developing new flavors (Mule and Gimlet are the latest offerings), she enjoys traveling the world, playing tennis and golf, and spending time with her two daughters, Payton and Sydney, and her husband, Adam. She is also a Girl Scout leader and a board member on both the Beach and Country Guild and Solana Santa Fe Elementary School. ¢
RSF Fire Unites with EMS Strong
ANNUAL CAMPAIGN CELEBRATES EMS PROVIDERS AND CAREGIVERS
T
he Rancho Santa Fe Fire Department recently made the cover of the National EMS Week planning guide as a part of the 2015 EMS Strong campaign. Created by the American College of Emergency Physicians in partnership with the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians, EMS Strong brings together associations, EMS services, sponsors, and national media to honor the dedication of EMS practitioners nationwide. “The EMS Strong campaign identified the great relationship RSF Fire has with our private EMS partners at American Medical Response and invited us to the table,” said Julie Taber, Public Relations Coordinator for the RSF Fire Protection District. “We think the image they took does a really great job of promoting the importance of strong relationships
among first responders.” RSF Fire, American Medical Response, and all the emergency responders in the 92067 area are humbled by the honor and privilege to serve their community. EMS Strong campaign celebrates, unifies, and inspires the men and women of the nation’s emergency medical services. The campaign’s ultimate mission is to bring awareness of the nation’s EMS providers and services to other healthcare professionals, public officials, and communities. The campaign runs year-round, and this year’s National EMS Week celebration will take place the week of May 17. Julie explained, ”The reality is that fire and EMS show up to help people on their worst days, but it’s important to recognize the dedication of our responders and caregivers 24/7.”

THE JOHNSON TWINS ARE RIGHT AT HOME IN RANCHO SANTA FE by LIZ ONUFER | photos by Soul of Photography

hen Logan and Charlotte Johnson moved from Boston to Rancho Santa Fe four years ago, the transition was an easy one. The friendly people and warm climate made an immediate impression on the twins and they quickly fell in love with the area. As 11-year-old fifth graders at R. Roger Rowe Elementary School, Logan and Charlotte’s academic experiences have been overwhelmingly positive. Logan explained, “The campus is so pretty and all the teachers are so nice.” Charlotte echoed his sentiments, “All my teachers make learning fun.” Core subjects appeal to the twins; Logan’s favorites are math, science, and reading, while Charlotte favors writing. “It allows me to express my thoughts through stories. It also gets me thinking about life lessons and decisions,” she acknowledged.

Recently, Charlotte and Logan began volunteering at the nonprofit Feeding America San Diego. Logan described the experience, “I got involved with Feeding America because I knew I could help people who are less fortunate. The last time I went, I sorted 4,400 pounds of good oranges from rotten oranges!” Charlotte is also involved in Somebody Cares, a backpack drive where she helps fill packs with toiletries and essentials delivered to the homeless. While some of their activities overlap, Charlotte and Logan have their individual interests. Logan is a member of the Maze Runners Robotics Team at school where he has experienced great success, including winning the Judge’s Inspiration Award out of 55 teams at the Southern California Championship. His participation in robotics is the inspiration for his career goal to be a robotics engineer. Charlotte is active in tennis, basketball, and horseback riding and enjoys drawing and sewing. She aspires to become a lawyer; “I feel everyone deserves a chance to speak up,” she shared. Local awards are plentiful for these two student stars. Charlotte won second place in the Saving Water art contest with the San Dieguito Water District. Logan, in addition to awards in robotics, achieved a perfect STAR math score in the third grade and perfect attendance in fourth grade. The hard-working pair find inspiration in family. “My parents inspire me to do my best and to always be nice,” Logan shared. Charlotte looks to her grandmother. “She inspires me because she always had a great attitude towards life, and she always thought of the good.” The Johnson twins carry on these family values today as student stars in Rancho Santa Fe. ¢

:::: YOUR NEIGHBOR’S RECIPE
photos by BLAIR ROBB
Ingredients 2 4 ½ ¼ 2 1 1 1
large butternut squashes cups farro cup whipped goat cheese cup toasted hazelnuts, roughly chopped cups cleaned watercress, rinsed and dried liter water liter apple cider vinaigrette teaspoon butter Extra virgin olive oil Salt and pepper
Directions 1.
To cook the farro start out with one liter of water and one liter of apple cider vinaigrette. Season the water with salt and bring the farro to a boil – this is about 20 minutes or until the farro has bloomed and is slightly al dente. 2. Drain the farro and chill. 3. Cut the squash into ½ inch cubes and roast by melting butter in a pan and sautéing – sauté for about one minute. 4. Add in the hazelnuts and a touch of olive oil to stop the browning of the butter. 5. Add in the farro and sauté another minute or so to marry all the flavors. 6. Deglaze pan with two tablespoons of the vinaigrette and season. 7. In a food processor combine goat cheese with salt and pepper and two tablespoons extra virgin olive oil. Pulse until the goat cheese starts to smooth out. 8. Spread the whipped goat cheese on the bottom of warm plates in a round shape. Mound the farro and squash mixture in the center of the plate. 9. Toss watercress with olive oil just to coat the leaves, don’t overdress and adjust seasoning. 10. Top warm farro with watercress and drizzle more vinaigrette around plate for serving.

P
etals for Patriots is a charitable program in which members of the community create beautiful floral arrangements for wounded soldiers and veterans. The program was started in 2008 by Floral Designer David Root. David was inspired to begin this project in his own flower shop due to his military past. He started bringing floral designs to Balboa Hospital for those who were wounded in Afghanistan and Iraq and encouraged local garden clubs to join him in his efforts. Upon hearing about the cause in 2011, LaVerne Schlosser asked the Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club if they would like to join in. LaVerne and other members of the garden club take two months out of the year to make floral arrangements and take fresh fruit baskets to the Wounded Warrior Battalion at Camp Pendleton. “The mission of this program is to let these Marines know how much we care and that they are not forgotten,” explained LaVerne. “My husband is a veteran of many wars and we had seen the wounded at Balboa firsthand. They are so grateful for the kindness shown.” The project is ongoing, so LaVerne and the garden club plan to continue to help the cause with their floral designs for as long as they have the volunteers to help. With the help of Shirley Corless, Mary Jam, Andrea Kessler, and Suzanne Johnson, Laverne was able to see this project bloom just like her flowers. LaVerne asserted that the most rewarding aspect about heading Petals for Patriots was “the camaraderie of the ladies and the joy it brings to the recipients.”

The evening also incorporated the presentation of grants to first-time CAF athletes. When the night’s festivites came to a close, the foundation announced that over $3 million dollars was raised and placed in the CAF’s endowment in memory of Robin Williams.

5Habits Heart-Healthy
by MELISSA WOLINSKI, D.O.; Scripps Clinic, Torrey Pines
Give yourself some love and assess if your lifestyle is heart-healthy. Prevention is key to keeping your heart pumping optimally, and these good habits can help keep your heart strong. 1. Exercise regularly. Your heart is a muscle that needs to be worked as consistently as any other muscle to stay strong. Doing aerobic exercise on most days of the week for 30 to 60 minutes helps your heart work efficiently. Make sure to add some light weight training for an additional metabolic kick to help with weight loss. 2. Eat a balanced diet. Food is medicine. According to the U.S. government’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans, eating right for your heart means including fruits and veggies, low-fat dairy, poultry, fish, and nuts in your diet. Avoid red meat, processed foods, and foods high in sodium. Remember to drink plenty of fluids and consider adding green tea. Certain foods and supplements can help decrease body inflammation and cholesterol, and improve blood pressure. These would include garlic, fish oil, magnesium, coenzyme Q10, fiber, and artichokes. 3. Manage your blood pressure. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease. Keeping your blood pressure within your healthy range reduces strain on your
heart and arteries. Incorporating the first two healthy habits into your routine will help keep your blood pressure in check. Limiting alcohol and avoiding tobacco smoke are also important. Try incorporating meditation techniques through activities such as yoga and tai chi for stress management. 4. Lose weight if needed. Too much weight puts you at a higher risk for many health problems, including heart disease. Come up with a smart and realistic weight loss plan and approach it systematically. 5. Get enough sleep. Good quality sleep is essential to health and well-being. Your heart is significantly impacted when your body doesn’t get enough sleep – just as your body needs rest, so does your heart. Most people need six to eight hours of sleep each day.

He’s also getting his real estate license to work in commercial real estate, and he volunteers his talent and time to the RSF Library by helping with their website and in newsletters for the Greyhound Adoption Center. Daniel is a senior at CCA, where he is involved in the after-school Envision program for instrumental music, and is proficient in piano, saxophone, and clarinet. Celeste added, “He also sings with the Bach Street Boys chorus at Village Church in RSF.” The Bailey family not only explores their varied interests locally but abroad as well. Their most memorable vacation was when they went to Romania and Lebanon in 2012 to meet their relatives and visit the famous Bran Castle commonly known as Dracula’s Castle. N
ow that the lovely weather has reminded you of the arrival of spring, there are a few ideas worth considering besides spring cleaning. We are all aware that increasing energy costs, legislation, decommission of San Onofre (estimated at $4.4 billion), and warming weather trends are causing substantial increases in residential utility rates. And we well recall how much our utility bills can be at the height of the summer. However, as a homeowner you can empower yourself by taking advantage of programs available in San Diego. The Home Energy Renovation Opportunity Program (HERO) allows homeowners to apply for low-cost loans making energyefficient, renewable energy products more affordable. HERO provides 100% financing at low interest rates, flexible payment terms, and repayments through your property taxes. The HERO

Now that you have empowered yourself, consider solar energy for your home. Why all the interest in solar? Solar panels are popping up on roofs all over the neighborhood. What do your neighbors know that you don’t? It is undeniable that we all pay the proverbial sunshine tax to live in beautiful San Diego. Why not take advantage of such an abundant, clean, renewable energy source? Installations continue to boom and solar is more affordable than ever. According to Solar Energy Industries Association, (SEIA) this is because “since the third quarter of 2010, the average price of a photovoltaic (PV) panel has dropped by 63%.” Your neighbors also know that the federal solar tax credits end next year, and in addition to the HERO program, there are attractive finance and leasing programs with no money down for solar installations. They may also know that Natural Energy is the leading company in San Diego for solar. With 38 years in the industry, Natural Energy has installed more solar than all other local companies combined and offers solar PV systems made right here in the United States. hether we like to admit it or not, our smile helps determine our first impression. “Instantly, people assess our openness, friendliness, intelligence, personality, and even social status,” suggested Dr. Martin P. Abelar of Aesthetic Dentistry. A beautiful smile boosts a person’s self-esteem and confidence. Improved self-esteem can help someone communicate better and develop stronger personal relationships, which could benefit every aspect of a person’s life. Since its inception in 1983, patients have sought out Dr. Abelar for smile makeovers that have involved general, cosmetic, and restorative dentistry. Patients 12 years and older receive regular fillings and cleanings, periodontal care, implants, and cosmetic services in a comfortable and professional environment that includes a highly trained team of professionals who take pride in their work. Due to Dr. Abelar’s unsurpassed results in cosmetic dentistry, he has been voted one of the top dentists in San Diego for the past nine years. He revealed, “It is truly an honor to be recognized by peers as someone committed to providing the highest quality work possible.” Dr. Abelar graduated from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in San Francisco and went on to teach at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. He had the privilege of teaching the techniques he now uses in his practice to dentists from around the world, and he continues to keep up with new developments by attending meetings and continuing education courses. He disclosed, “I always hope to impress my patients with my level of knowledge and commitment to their treatment goals. They will find my team helpful and knowledgeable as well.” What makes Dr. Abelar unique is that his continuing thirst for knowledge has allowed him to bridge the gap between function and aesthetics. In the past dental work has been either functional or aesthetic but rarely both. Dr. Abelar takes advantage of newer materials that are stronger and more visually appealing and more biocompatible to provide the most pleasing results. Aesthetic Dentistry is proud to serve Del Mar, Carmel Valley, Rancho Santa Fe, and surrounding areas. Dr. Abelar has a close tie to the communities and is a 30-year resident of Carmel Valley/Del Mar. Q&A
with Alyce Ashcraft
RSFF Grants and Projects Committee Chair
What is the history behind RSFF? How many years has the RSFF been active? The RSFF is a community foundation that was established in 1981. It started with a small group of visionary volunteer leaders in Rancho Santa Fe who wanted to provide support for the community organizations in the Ranch. When the board hired the first executive director, Mrs. Christy Wilson, in 1997, the RSFF gained momentum and realized its potential for impacting the broader community and San Diego region. Today, the RSFF has a 29-member board, a team of five professional staff members, and over $85 million in assets under management. Most importantly, the RSFF has awarded nearly $40 million in grants since 2000. The Patriots Initiative, a program of the foundation that serves the San Diego military community, began in 2008. The RSF Women’s Fund, a donor-advised fund of the foundation, was founded in 2004 by Mrs. Gayle Gillies Mize. Who has been instrumental in the development and execution of the RSFF? In her 18 years as the executive director, Mrs. Christy Wilson has shaped the RSFF into the organization it is today. Mrs. Wilson says that working with the group of committed Rancho Santa Fe community leaders who served up to nine-year terms on the board of directors over the years has been an inspired partnership. Many local residents have served in significant capacities over the years. There are 116 individuals who have served on the board during its 34-year history, including nine of the founding directors who are still in the community – Chuck Arledge, Nancy Herrington, Jeanette Peterson, and Paul Thomas. In 1997, Bill McConnor led the move by the board to hire the first executive director and establish an office in the Village, which was generously donated for 15 years by Union Bank. Tyler Miller, Blaine Briggs, John Seiber, Martin Dickinson, Don Oliphant, and

Bill Herrick are among the many who continue to serve in various roles. Please tell us about the role the RSFF plays in the RSF community. What is the foundation’s mission and how does it maintain this purpose? The RSFF exists to promote philanthropy and serve the community. The mission of the RSFF is “to connect donors with regional and global needs through visionary community leadership, personalized service, and effective grantmaking.” We maintain this purpose by pursuing excellence in each element of our mission. We know our donors and fundholders – we see them around town and connect with them personally. Our long history of working with nonprofits throughout San Diego uniquely qualifies us to make recommendations of where philanthropic funds can best be directed through grantmaking to support the most efficient and impactful charitable work in the region. Our ability to work with both donors and nonprofits positions us well to provide leadership in collaborations and convenings to address needs in a comprehensive way in the community. How does the foundation go about investing charitable funds? The RSFF stewards investments for permanent endowment funds, funds held for other nonprofit organizations, and donoradvised funds that provide resources for the charitable mission of the foundation. The Investment Committee of the Board of Directors makes asset allocation decisions for the managed pool of assets at the foundation. The Investment Committee members are all current or retired professional investment managers who donate their time to the foundation. To ensure that funds are managed for maximum yet secure returns at low cost, the managed pool, a diversified portfolio of assets, is invested in indexed mutual funds at The Vanguard Group.
What are some past examples of projects completed by the RSFF? Can you elaborate about any ongoing or upcoming programs? The RSFF has supported Rancho Santa Fe nonprofit organizations with nearly $6 million in grants in the last 15 years alone. These grants include $100,000 over four years for completing the Performing Arts Center at the R. Roger Rowe School. Other Rancho Santa Fe nonprofits include the Rancho Santa Fe Library Guild, Rancho Santa Fe Community Center, Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club, Rancho Santa Fe Senior Center, Rancho Santa Fe Historical Society, Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild, and the Helen Woodward Animal Center. Beyond Rancho Santa Fe, the foundation has significantly supported the Armed Services YMCA of Camp Pendleton, Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas, and Community HousingWorks, to name a few. We are currently providing multi-year funding for a senior food and wellness program, North County Senior Connections. We are also planning the next multi-year grant focus area that we will fund. We have invited the input of our donor-advised fundholders and board members to identify an area of need in the North County area to address with our next grantmaking program.

:::: COVER FEATURE Please elaborate about the new food truck program. The goal of North County Senior Connections (NCSC) is to provide a wellness program and address food security needs of a growing senior population in North County. This program recognizes that healthy aging for vulnerable seniors depends upon access to healthy nutrition, meals, and socialization. The innovative approach to addressing this need is by using a food truck to provide healthy lunches. With the Thyme Together food truck, NCSC effectively provides a mobile senior center. This program offers deeply discounted lunches to seniors followed by activities that inform, entertain, and provide socialization for them. NCSC, launched in mid-November 2014, currently serves the Vista and San Marcos communities. The food truck serves freshly prepared lunches to seniors at two mobile home parks and two faith centers Monday through Thursday each week. The RSFF grant allowed the nonprofit Dreams for Change to purchase the food truck. Dreams for Change handles the nutrition research, menu options, and food preparation. The RSFF grant additionally funds the North County nonprofit Interfaith Community Services to provide staff to arrange education programs and social services for participating seniors. The goal of the six-month pilot phase of NCSC was to serve approximately 2,500 meals to 200 unduplicated vulnerable North County seniors. We are pleased to see that the results after three months of the NCSC program demonstrate that the program has served 1,000 meals to 200 unduplicated seniors. How does the community go about supporting these projects? The RSFF will provide a $300,000 multiyear grant to fund the food truck, staff, and subsidies for the meals. Collaborative support from other foundations, businesses, and individuals will provide the remaining funding for the total $800,000 cost of the program over three years. Community members can support NCSC by visiting the RSFF website at www.rsffoundation.org and clicking on the donate button. Or, send a check made payable to the Rancho Santa Fe Foundation with NCSC in the memo line to P.O. Box 811, Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92067. Your donation is tax deductible. The RSFF has also teamed up with Mogl to promote NCSC. Mogl is an online platform that partners with restaurants to help nonprofits maximize their fundraising goals through dining out. North County Senior Connections Food Truck group. When you eat at a participating restaurant, a percentage of your bill will be donated by the restaurant to NCSC. Please tell us more about the RSF scholarship program. Although the foundation administers several scholarship programs, the most vital is the Chuck Courtney Honorary Scholarship Fund (CCHSF). Conceived by several members of the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club in 2012, the scholarships are awarded annually to two San Diego County students with demonstrated financial need to assist with the tuition, fees, and/or books at the college of their choice. At present, there are seven scholarship students who are receiving support from the fund, which has totaled more than $50,000 over the last four years. Please elaborate more about the various funds and how they support the community. The RSFF offers a variety of charitable funds for both individuals, families, and nonprofit organizations. With a donor-advised fund, donors take a full deduction for the initial amount that opens the fund, distribute the money in the fund to their selected charitable organizations over time, and make additional tax-deductible gifts to the fund at any time. The RSFF also offers endowment funds for individual/family donors. These are permanent funds, in which the principal is invested and the interest provides income to support the nonprofit or charitable cause designated as the recipient by the donors. Nonprofit organizations may also establish endowment funds at the RSFF. These funds provide an ongoing source of income and sustainability for the organization into the future. If a nonprofit is not ready to establish an endowment but wants its reserves to have some potential investment earnings, the organization may establish a non-endowment. This type of fund is often used by nonprofits to build their reserves or for special projects. The Community Impact Fund is an RSF Foundation endowment fund that provides the resources for collective grantmaking in the community, such as North County Senior Connections. This fund was established and has been built over the years by visionary, generous donors who entrusted the RSFF with effective grantmaking in the community and region. We invite community members to contribute to this fund to build on this legacy and increase the impact of local collective giving focused on Rancho Santa Fe and San Diego County. Donors with an interest
in supporting local military service members and their families may learn more and contribute to The Patriots Initiative on the RSFF website. The RSF Women’s Fund welcomes new members from Rancho Santa Fe and you can learn more on their website at www.rsfwomensfund.org. Does the foundation host any events for the community? We recently hosted a Get to Know the RSFF reception for community members. We plan to host another Get to Know reception in the fall. If you could grant the community one wish, what would it be? It would be the ability to build consensus around critical community issues through shared leadership by engaging all segments of the community. The RSFF wants to work with the community to make this possible. Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers? We invite readers to visit the website, to attend our events and convenings, or just pick up the phone to share their philanthropic interests and learn more about our work.

CREATING LIFETIME CHANGES THIS SUMMER THERAPEUTIC LITERACY CENTER WORKS TO ADDRESS AND CORRECT LEARNING CHALLENGES by TORI MORRISON | photos by Tyler McElhaney
T
herapeutic Learning Center (TLC) is pleased to help students reach their potential and thrive this summer. With 6 to 10-week individualized summer sessions, TLC offers students the opportunity to prepare for the upcoming school year and improve on lifelong skills necessary to achieve both in and out of the classroom. As TLC Owner Maria Bagby expressed, “Summer is a great opportunity for children to adjust the ways in which they learn so that they enter the school year as more competent and confident students.” At the Therapeutic Literacy Center, highly trained clinicians and educational therapists identify the causes of students’ weaknesses and address them immediately so that lifetime accommodations become unnecessary. Maria advised, “When a child is working harder than they should, it’s time to look at why and what can be done differently and more efficiently. There is always a reason a child struggles with homework or performs poorly in school. Learning problems happen when a child’s underlying processes are not working as efficiently as they could. This can be changed.”
Summer sessions at TLC are available for students between the ages of 5 and 18. Children are individually assessed and receive customized cognitive training in a one-on-one setting. This allows the staff to cater to each student’s specific learning challenge. Students have access to the latest technological advances including sound therapies, deficit-specific auditory processing stimulation and training, audio-vocal training, attention and focus training, Interactive Metronome, and other research-based auditory, memory and processing programs. Additionally, to build students’ self-esteem and create a more collaborative learning environment, TLC will also include social hours between tutoring sessions. “Social hour is a time for students with learning disabilities to engage with one another, discuss what they are learning, and find common ground at the center. It’s very beneficial for the students to connect with others going through the same experience,” shared Maria. Visit www.therapeuticliteracycenter.com for more details about individualized summer sessions. ¢

DANCEOLOGY PERFORMING ARTS CAMPUS
G
et into a new routine this summer with a fun-filled dance camp at Danceology Performing Arts Campus! Danceology offers a broad variety of camps and classes throughout the eight-week summer session for young boys and girls of all experience levels. “The camps are engaging atmospheres designed to build the foundation and love of dance while cultivating a personal relationship with the family and the student,” explained Danceology Owner Nicole Lucia. “We assess each dancer’s individual level and commitment and recommend classes specially designed for your child’s need.” Programs include five different tiny tot camps, intermediate workshops, and a beginning cheer/hip hop camp for ages 7 to 10. There are also boys-only hip hop and tap classes, as well as an adaptive dance class for young girls with special needs – the only local dance studio to offer such a program. Two important parts of the Danceology experience are the welcoming environment and high quality of instruction. Instructors are CPR-certified and always on-hand to guide young dancers. The emphasis on nurturing and confidence-building has proven to have incredible results. Over the years, Danceology students have accepted college scholarships and developed professional careers in the industry. “Since we’ve been open for over a decade, we’ve become experts in the field of dance,” said Nicole. “We’ve found our niche in creating that love and passion for performance and dance at a young age.” Sabrina Roux, a proud Danceology parent, enthusiastically attested to the program’s success. “We treasure every summer spent at Danceology,” she shared. “My daughter would not be as poised and well-rounded of a dancer today without having started in one of Danceology’s dance camps.” Find out more at www.danceology.biz.

INSPIRED MOVEMENT DANCE AND PERFORMING ARTS
A
t Inspired Movement Dance and Performing Arts dancers are encouraged to develop their dance skills, abilities, and their enjoyment of dancing. This is especially evident in the special camps offered. “Our camps are geared towards fun, learning, and growing each dancer’s love for the art of dance. Each camp holds a performance at the end of the week, and the families are always in awe of what their kids learn,” said Jenna Saylor, Owner of Inspired Movement. Saylor first created the “Lil Peeps” hip-hop camp for five to eight-year-olds, and from there the camp program has grown tremendously. Camps are now offered to this age group in ballet dance and performing arts (“Prima Princesses”) and musical theatre (“Lil Stars”). These camps run from Monday through Friday and are three hours long. They are focused on fun, with each day consisting of dancing, arts and crafts, and games. “This year, we are also offering a full Musical Theatre camp run by San Diego Voice Academy for dancers who are nine years old and up,” explained Saylor. Intensives are also offered for more advanced dancers in jazz, contemporary, ballet, and dance for camera. These intensives and workshops are designed to motivate and challenge each dancer. :::: FROM THE ORTHODONTIST
ASK YOUR LOCAL ORTHODONTIST by John R. Jerome, DDS MS
Q: When should I take my child to see the orthodontist? A: All kids should get a check-up with an orthodontist no later than age seven. To have a healthy smile that’s good for life, your child needs teeth and jaws that are properly aligned. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that your child get a check-up with an orthodontist at the first recognition of the existence of an orthodontic problem, but no later than age seven. By then, your child has enough permanent teeth for an orthodontist to determine whether an orthodontic problem exists or is developing. Putting off a check-up with an orthodontist until a child has lost all baby teeth could be a
disservice. Some orthodontic problems may be easier to correct if they’re found early. A check-up no later than age seven gives your orthodontist the opportunity to recommend the appropriate treatment at the appropriate time. If early treatment is in order, the orthodontist may be able to achieve results that may not be possible once the face and jaws have finished growing.
Choosing the Optimal Time for Treatment – Consult an Orthodontist
treatment is indicated it can give your orthodontist the chance to: • Guide jaw growth • Lower the risk of trauma to protruded front teeth • Correct harmful oral habits • Improve appearance and self-esteem • Guide permanent teeth into a more favorable position • Improve the way lips meet
While orthodontic treatment most often begins between the ages of nine and 14, some children’s orthodontic problems can benefit from earlier treatment. If it appears that your child will need treatment at some point then your orthodontist can advise you about the best time to begin. If early

All proceeds raised from the event benefit the community center, which is a local nonprofit dedicated to improving the community life in Rancho Santa Fe through various programs and events. The center provides enrichment, recreation, and outreach for all ages of the community. The event also gave back to its participants in a big way. Grand prize winner earned a limited edition Girard Perregaux Monte Carlo Rally watch valued at $11,000. Second prize wasn’t too shabby either: a two-night stay at the Cosmopolitan Las Vegas, complete with a spa and dining package for two. The tournament served as a fun way to bring the community together through competitive and charitable spirit.

lite Pediatric Dentistry was the first pediatric dental practice in 4S Ranch and has been providing dental care to children in the community for over two years now. Under the care of Dr. Femme Ambrosio and her team, the practice strives to provide extraordinary care for every patient, every day. “We are a small boutique practice and are focused on each family’s needs. My goal for every child is that they are healthy, safe, and happy,” said Dr. Ambrosio. According to Dr. Ambrosio, a board certified pediatric dentist, having a boutique practice allows her the time necessary to ensure that children and parents have a positive experience and the best possible care. The office encourages open communication and takes the time to explain prevention plans, treatment and procedure options, and finances. Dr. Ambrosio understands that each child is unique and must be treated as such.“These visits can be overwhelming and we hope that getting to know each child individually will help in their overall care.” It is the friendly and compassionate team at Elite Pediatric Dentistry that truly sets the practice apart. Dr. Ambrosio has worked in various pediatric dental offices throughout the country and learned a great deal from each experience. When she decided to open her own practice, she and her team not only had the knowledge, but the skill set and personality to provide for their patients. “From the moment a parent calls to schedule an appointment to the time a family walks out the door they are treated with care,” said Dr. Ambrosio. Dr. Ambrosio is a native San Diegan, wife, and mother, all of which she feels serve her well in her practice. Dr. Ambrosio is a mother to Bennett (4), Amelie (3), and Camdyn (1). “Being a mother has really changed the way I practice. In my office, I understand the three different relationships involved – the doctor, parent, and child. We look forward to being a part of the community, their family, and watching them grow.”

ane Scallan is a longtime resident of the Rancho Santa Fe community. “I consider myself a newcomer with 27 years to my credit,” Jane joked. Newcomer status aside, Jane has a deep appreciation for the community’s historical background and she does her part to preserve her wonderful community by actively volunteering with one of Rancho Santa Fe’s most notable historical places: the Rancho Santa Fe Library. There, Jane has worked for many years in the library’s Book Cellar, a resale book shop located beneath the library in which all materials are donated by community members and all proceeds benefit the Rancho Santa Fe Library Guild. “The best part about volunteering at the library Book Cellar is the special sense of selfsatisfaction personally and a ‘paying forward’ experience,” shared Jane. “The big bonuses are the friendships and camaraderie of your fellow ‘book angels.’” Jane credits one particular “book angel” for her involvement with the library. “For two years, Nan Werner, the iconic Rancho Santa Fe library lady, kept asking me to join the group, and she finally wore me down,” recalled Jane. “Twelve years later and I am still around. Nan passed away last year and my memories of the Book Cellar will always revolve around her.” During her time spent at the Book Cellar, Jane has played the role of manager, board member, and more. Her present efforts require that she price, shelve, and cull books, audio books, CDs, DVDs, and even VHS cassettes. She also fills in as a cashier from time to time. “For me, the biggest accomplishment at the Book Cellar was as a manager. With new marketing techniques the shop was able to double its revenue over a four-year period,” shared Jane. “That meant more funds for the children’s library upstairs and increasing our outreach services to the San Diego area.” When asked about one wish she would grant to the library, Jane replied, “An inventive way to get more of the public to read and enjoy the pleasures of a good book.” Jane added, “The Book Cellar is always in need of hands-on and financial help." On that note, the library’s major fundraiser is the Semi-Annual May Half-Price Book Sale, which will be held on May 1 and 2 at the Book Cellar. “All books and specialty items are 50 % off, and we have a free drawing for two $50 gift certificates,” said Jane. “Just show up and sign!” ¢

Sirius K. Yoo and the SKY Facial Plastic Surgery team are committed to their goal of “delighting the patient,” emphasizing the importance of individualized attention and a relationship of trust between patient and doctor. “As a family-owned and operated practice, we are dedicated to providing you with impeccable service from start to finish,” shared Dr. Yoo. “From the moment you step through the door, you’ll have the undivided attention of a small team of professionals who are devoted to making you feel perfectly at home.” The boutique medical practice specializes in skincare, injectables, the laser facelift and cosmetic surgery for the face and neck. Located in 4S Ranch, SKY feels more like a spa than a clinic, and the SKY Team takes the time to make sure patients are relaxed and comfortable. “We never rush through appointments. We want each visit to feel like a mini-retreat for our patients where they receive the best care from our friendly and professional staff,” said Dr. Yoo. Board-certified in both facial plastic surgery and head and neck surgery, Dr. Yoo is well-equipped to provide the quality of care and results his patients are looking for. He is an active member of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and has taught advanced techniques to other surgeons at national meetings. He also completed a prestigious fellowship at Stanford University and has been published in the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery. Dr. Yoo uses his expertise to help each patient achieve a natural look, rather than applying generalized techniques that result in an “overdone” appearance. “I believe that every face and personality is unique. I work closely with each patient to develop a treatment plan uniquely customized to their skin type, facial structure, and aesthetic desires,” related Dr. Yoo. “I love helping our patients feel more confident in their everyday lives.”

BEST-SELLING AUTHOR LISA SEE JOINS GUESTS AT LIBRARY GUILD FUNDRAISER
T
he Rancho Santa Fe Library Guild showed their festive side by putting on a literary-themed fundraiser at the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club. This fundraiser was an expanded version of the Members Exclusive Author Talks, which are held at the RSF Library three to four times a year. “We have held various types of fundraisers over the years, but feel at this time that it is our mission to provide programs and events that are literary or educational in nature,” said Susan Appleby, Director of Membership and Development. This year’s fundraiser featured Lisa See, five-time best-selling author with nine titles to her credit. Lisa is known for writing historical fiction focusing on the Asian-American experience. The library’s partner for this event was Warwick’s Books of La Jolla. The Library Guild has had an ongoing relationship with them for the past four years and they are the partners for each Author Talks event. Susan explained, “Without their cooperation, we could never have booked Lisa See, or any of the other best-selling authors featured in our author events.” The proceeds made by the fundraiser far exceeded expectations, which is no surprise considering how much effort was put into the event. The staff of the RSF Golf Club went above and beyond to provide their guests with a great experience in a beautiful setting. Decorations were Chinese-themed and included yellow and red tablecloths and napkins along with Chinese mum centerpieces designed by committee member Suzanne Johnson. Each guest received a personally signed copy of Lisa’s book China Dolls. Learn more at www.rsflibraryguild.org.

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
It’s Hot and Getting Hotter in RSF! It
may still be cold and wintery in the much of the U.S., but here in sunny San Diego it’s heating up! And not just the temperature – the real estate market is hot and looking to get hotter! Here is why: as I wrote in the last issue of 92067 Magazine, we began 2015 with low housing inventory. Now heading into spring, let’s take a closer look at what’s happening in 92067. As winter turns to spring we are beginning to see more homes come on the market. Year-to-date inventory is up 15%. But that is only part of the picture. Pending sales (which tell us where the market is heading) are up almost 40% year-to-date, and closed sales are up a whopping 67%. The median sales price for a detached home in RSF is up about 12% year-to-date, and the average days on market (how long a home is on the market before it goes into escrow) is down over 15%. With stats like this we expect to see more sellers deciding to get in the ballgame and put their home on the market, so look for home inventory to increase. At the same time indicators are that interest rates may tick up a bit but will remain attractively low, at least for a while. Many folks are going to see this as the time to jump in and buy as the increase in inventory gives them more choices and interest rates are still low.
What we have here is a good scenario for a healthy market for both buyers and sellers. This may be the perfect time to make your move and I can help you! Please call, text, or email me today. Remember – to get the MO$T call MOTS at 858-444-MOTS (6687).
