ith all of the recent rain and cold weather, I can’t believe we are finally thinking about summer! I’ve always loved summer. As a kid, I would count the days until school was out. It still seems like yesterday. As parents, the mere concept of summer can be a bit overwhelming. Several months of kids at home? What in the heck are they going to do every day? How am I going to pull this off? For these reasons, we have been publishing our popular Annual Summer Camp Guide for the past five years. Although we had no idea of how popular these issues were going to become, this year I am proud to present you with the largest Annual Summer Camp Guide (see page 26) that we’ve published. It is bigger and better than ever! It includes tons of options to keep your youngster occupied during the long break. Grab a cup of tea (or a glass of wine), kick up your feet, and take a peek at the variety of camps being offered this summer. Be sure to reserve your kid’s spot early this year, as summer camps are in high demand and things fill up quickly. And most importantly, tell them you saw their camp in 92067 Magazine!

TAMARA LAFARGA-JOSEPH FINDS HAPPINESS BY SERVING OTHERS
T
amara Lafarga-Joseph, a 15-year resident of Rancho Santa Fe, has much to boast about. With her graduate work in exercise physiology, Tamara is a trained physical therapist, working with athletes in the field of hydrotherapy. She is also a real estate tycoon, purchasing and frequently managing health clubs, homes, multifamily units, cruise ships, and even Alzheimer’s facilities. But these accomplishments are not what Tamara is most proud of. It is her charitable endeavors. “It is my honor, responsibility, and privilege to be involved in philanthropic work. I am living my dream, because it is very fulfilling and uplifting,” Tamara exclaimed. She currently serves on numerous charitable boards (Miracle Babies, Vision of Children, and RSF Women’s Fund, to name a few), and has chaired events for other causes (including, but not limited to, the American Lung Association, Helen Woodward Animal Center, and the Foundation for Women). To help raise funds for the Foundation for Women, Tamara even produced a book called Women’s Witticisms. It is a compilation of quotes from women throughout the world, ages 9 to 91. Tamara commented, “The purpose of the book is to give women hope, inspiration, and strength through the realization that we are here to support one another.” All of Tamara’s good deeds have not gone unnoticed. This April she will be honored for her community service at the 54th Annual Salvation Army Women of Dedication Luncheon. Tamara revealed, “It brought tears to my eyes when I received the notice because, in my opinion, it is one of the greatest honors one could receive. [The Salvation Army’s mission] is based on Christian values and service to those in need with no discrimination to anyone for any reason.” Other pursuits that Tamara takes pleasure in include art, Latin dance, 8 • 92067MAGAZINE.COM • April | May 2019
hiking, snorkeling, cross-country skiing, and spending time with her 11 grandchildren. Tamara is also busy promoting and fine-tuning her concept of 3-D printed homes eventually solving the world’s catastrophic housing issues. But her main passion, and the secret to her alwayspleasant demeanor, is her philanthropic work. Tamara confessed, “I believe that service to others is the key to happiness. When we show kindness to others, serotonin is released and we feel good. So if you want to feel true joy, there is a simple solution: help others. No act of kindness is too small!”

TALENT IN TRAINING Studio West Offers Music Production Camps for Young Musicians
S
tudio West has been San Diego’s premier recording studio for over 40 years, but recently some new clients have been working there. In 2015, owner Peter Dyson started a series of week-long music production camps for middle and high school students, largely due to his own children’s musical journey. “My daughter plays the harp and my son is a drummer. They both had amazing teachers and great experiences performing with various ensembles, but a recording studio is a different environment that helps musicians grow.” The week-long camps involve instruction in songwriting, production and performance. Many students have a background in music theory and traditional instruments, but it’s not a requirement. “A laptop is now a musical instrument, just like a piano or guitar, but to play it requires the same instruction, discipline, and hard work that’s required for more traditional instruments,” said Dyson.
Performing in a studio is intimidating, but students rise to the occasion. As the lead instructor, San Diego songwriter, performer, and father of two multi-instrumentalist preteen boys Shawn Rohlf explains it, “I’m amazed at the musicianship and work ethic of the kids. If they are this good now, where will they be in 10 years?” At the end of the week, parents and students listen to the songs that students have written and produced over the week. The experience leaves many ready for more. As student Chrysta Hlavacek (17) puts it, “Making music with talented artists is my dream job, and going to Studio West helps me get there.”

TOBY WELLS FOUNDATION GOLF CLASSIC HELPS KIDS AND ANIMALS IN NEED
T
he Toby Wells Foundation will hold its 18th Annual Toby Wells & Craig Castaneda Golf Classic on June 14 at the Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside. This year’s theme is Route 66. The tournament is the foundation’s primary fundraising tool to fund all of the programs that provide support to hundreds of underprivileged children and neglected animals throughout San Diego County and other parts of Southern California. The Toby Wells Foundation was first established after Adrienne Wells and April West began searching for ways to raise funds and
awareness and honor the memory of their brother Toby, who died from medical complications after paralysis from a swimming accident. The tournament began shortly after the foundation’s establishment, when the Wells family purchased a 300-acre ranch called Blue Apple Ranch. The ranch is populated with several types of rescued animals who are cared for by disenfranchised and disabled children. Toby was known for his love of animals and frequently rescued dogs in animal shelters. Proceeds from the tournament will go to funding a one-day, outdoor afternoon of fun
for 250 local foster youth through the nonprofit Voices for Children, field trips for children of military households through the Armed Services YMCA, a work-readiness internship for foster youth at San Pasqual Academy and at-risk youth from Abraxas High School and Warner Springs High School, a holiday shopping spree for Polinsky Children’s Center and the Armed Services YMCA where each child receives a $200 gift card to Walmart, and assistance in caring for Blue Apple Ranch’s rescued animals. For more information about the foundation or to buy tickets visit www.tobywells.org.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MOUTH AND FACE PROTECTION by TARKAN SIDAL, DDS, MD
I
t’s that time of the year again – April is National Facial Protection Month. Leading organizations such as the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), American Dental Association (ADA), American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), and the Academy for Sports Dentistry (ASD) work together to create public awareness of the importance of wearing protective gear to guard your face and mouth while playing sports. With the change of seasons, spring may bring positive sentiment to our daily lives, but it traditionally brings us many patients suffering with head, face, and mouth injuries resulting from sports accidents. Many injuries can be easily prevented with the use of safety equipment like helmets, face guards, and mouth guards. The head and face are integrated anatomically in such a way that statistically, when injuries occur, sinuses will absorb a frontal impact similar to airbag technology or “crumple zones” in modern cars. This design protects the subject from a more serious brain injury but at the expense of the facial fractures. Wearing protective head and face gear will give you an extra level of absorption of the unwanted impact. Mouth guards protect the teeth from being knocked out and fractured, and also prevent injuries to the bone, tissues enveloping them, and the jaw joints. Having a mouth guard constructed takes just one easy visit to your dentist’s office. After a mold is made of your teeth’s
impressions, your custom mouth guard will be ready for use at the following visit. A mouth guard not only protects teeth but also allows for normal speech and breathing. Also, protecting your eyes with impactresistant goggles will protect two of your most important organs. There are numerous published studies that recognize the importance of injury patterns by age. In adults, with aging, healing from traumas changes somewhat but the pattern of injury generally doesn’t. There is an age group of patients with traumatic injuries that needs our special attention – kids. As children grow and participate in more independent activities, their cognition and judgment also grow, making them more prone to injuries from playground activities and other age-related sports. The most common childhood injuries are from playgrounds, bicycling, soccer, basketball, and football. It is important as parents and caregivers to create peace of mind by encouraging children and adults to enjoy sports while taking basic precautions to prevent unwanted injuries. Helmets, face guards, eye protection, and mouth guards in general are significantly cost-efficient when compared to the medical costs of an injury; not to mention the psychological burden of injury, which can have lifelong effects lingering long after the metabolic healing. Helmet technology is another gift to modern man with its versatile design, and can also be part of the fun by adding your team logo. It is prudent to talk with your dentist about which activities you and your family are interested in, and ask about how to make sure your teeth and face can be protected.

COMMUNITY STUFF
RSF Donors Support Cancer Research
Rancho Santa Fe-based Hope for a Cure Foundation recently contributed several important pieces of equipment to a local cancer research lab. The gifts to Dr. Andrew Sharabi’s lab at University of California San Diego Moores Cancer Center will play a key role in advancing treatments for head and neck cancer patients. The first piece of equipment funded was a Nikon TS2 Inverted Microscope with Camera Interface, which allows real-time video tracking of interactions between tumor cells and immune cells. The technology will improve not just research but also Dr. Sharabi’s ability to present his findings in presentations and publications. The second piece of equipment is an Invitrogen Countess II FL Automated Cell Counter, which saves both time and research samples by automating the cell counting process. Finally, Hope for a Cure Foundation donations have funded a research grant writer for the lab, in an effort to secure further funding and expand the scope of Dr. Sharabi’s research. His NIH R01 grant application was recently approved for funding. Learn more at www.hopeforacurefoundation.org.

is Joint Commission accredited and licensed and certified by the State of California. As Jim and Patricia Brady stated, “We personally understand the toll that addiction takes on families and we want to be a part of the solution to this devastating problem.” According to Dr. Leslie Sanders, Program Director, research shows that therapy is effective when built on a relationship of mutual trust and respect. “At AToN Center, we offer one individual therapy session every weekday to allow our residents to build relationships with the clinical team. There are also three group therapy sessions each weekday, as well as a Saturday morning group. Our staff is committed to the long-term recovery of our residents,” explained Dr. Leslie Sanders. In addition, transportation is offered to community meetings such as SMART Recovery, LifeRing, Refuge Recovery, and 12 Step. With this exposure to multiple styles of meetings, residents are able to construct a support system that works for their individual needs. Self-care and balance are hallmarks of AToN Center’s program, therefore residents are offered an array of holistic services including: acupuncture, massage, hypnotherapy, physical therapy, meditation, yoga, nutritional education, SPECIAL ADVERTISEMENT
and personal training at AToN Center’s onsite gym. Recognizing the toll that addiction can have on families, AToN Center’s intensive family and couples therapy offers a supportive and therapeutic environment for families to come together and begin the healing process. AToN Center is a private, 10-acre sanctuary comprised of five estates and is limited to 25 residents to ensure that individualized care can be provided with a high staff to resident ratio. “It is our belief that a ‘one size fits all’ approach to addiction recovery can be ineffective. We are a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-based program, and our clinical team is made up of licensed psychologists and certified chemical dependency counselors who specialize in treating depression, anxiety, and trauma through a multitude of therapeutic approaches,” stated Dr. Cassandra Cannon, Clinical Director. Treatment plans are individualized to meet each resident’s unique needs. The program at AToN Center is designed for motivated individuals, and the population generally consists of executives and professionals who are looking to make a dramatic change in their lives. For more information about AToN Center, please visit www.atoncenter.com or call 888-477-5328.

alifornia All-Stars Cheer (CAS) began its story 18 years ago in North County San Diego. With more than 1,000 athletes throughout six locations – San Marcos, the Bay Area, Las Vegas, Ventura, Ontario, and Scottsdale, AZ – CAS has worked its way to offering the most competitive cheer program in the state of California, gaining international recognition along the way as 12-time World Champions. “All-Stars encompasses all the fun aspects about cheerleading, including dance, stunts, bonding with friends, and gaining confidence and skill through performances. Building the children from the inside out is what we do, because we focus on them as
a whole,” said Tannaz Kirichkow, Owner of CAS. “Our goal is to make sure our kids gain a strong sense of self confidence that will carry on for the rest of their lives.” CAS offers tumbling camps in the summer, which focus on tumbling techniques for beginners, intermediate, and advanced levels. The camps can last two or three days and are three hours per day. Camps are open to both boys and girls. CAS provides a sense of work ethic and life lessons in each of its classes, including a sense of bonding and camaraderie for cheerleaders who travel to national and international competitions. “People come to California All-Stars for top-quality coaching and family atmosphere,”
explained Tannaz. “Life lessons, core values, and athletic excellence come hand-inhand. We love to see our kids succeed on and off the floor!” CAS’s list of awards and recognitions includes 400 National Titles, Grand Champions, Program Champions, Innovative Choreography Awards, Judges Choice Awards, Paid Bids to the USASF Cheerleading Worlds, 2009 through 2013 World Champions, IALC Champions, 2010 through 2014 NCA National Champions, three silver medals at the 2008 Cheerleading Worlds, and 2013 Summit Champions. Marilee Chaney of North County said, “CAS is about positive attitudes. From the ‘can do’ approach toward all athletes to seeing the staff enthusiastically hug a cheerleader when she gets a new tumbling skill – from the beginning, the message has been ‘you are capable, and you are welcome here.’” With a trained and energetic staff, spacious gym, and professional instruction, CAS has something for every budding cheerleader out there! CODEREV KIDS

ith the growing popularity of STEAM programs in schools, many parents are turning to technology camps to keep their students entertained and engaged during summer months. CodeREV Kids is one of Southern California’s fastest growing tech camps, and according to Founder Evan Boorman, offers the only standards-aligned summer tech program that focuses on math and science. Evan explained, “I started CodeREV to answer the question so many students have: ‘Why? Why should I learn math, science, or engineering?’ In our project-based classes and curriculum, students automatically answer these questions for themselves, since they need to learn these topic areas to create the fun and amazing projects they build and code in camp.” CodeREV offers a variety of classes for kids ages 6 to 14 to appeal to all technology-based interests. Its MathCraft program uses the popular video game Minecraft to teach math, and its Adventures in Programming class covers 3D game design. Its most popular option, Minecraft Level Design & Engineering, applies STEAM concepts to building amazing contraptions inside Minecraft. With a total of 10 different classes to choose from, there is something for everyone at CodeREV. Evan has been teaching STEAM for 17 years, has created education software, and has started education technology companies. Evan’s partner, Chief Education Innovation Officer John Stuppy, Ph.D., holds a Master’s degree in Education Technology from Stanford, a Ph.D. in Education Reform from UCLA, and has been teaching and creating curriculum for coding aligned with math for three decades. Evan and John believe that their combined 50 years of experience, coupled with the most innovative teaching approaches in technology, are critical to bringing coding into mainstream education, and to get students excited about using math and science. OUTPOST SUMMER CAMPS
N
ow more than ever, children need to be away from their devices for extended periods of time, and there is nothing better than a summer day camp experience to make this a reality. Outpost Summer Camps was founded in 2001 and serves over 1,500 children every summer, completely outdoors and screen-free. The Outpost experience has three pillars that parents have loved for over 15 summers: “old-fashioned” camp activities (think MUD!), door-to-door transportation for most families, and exceptional, well-trained staff that ensure a quality experience for each child. Outpost is open to children ages 3 to 14, and according to Owner/Director Stuart Jones, “Each of our camps has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” The three-week sessions are what make Outpost so unique. Stuart explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” Another way the camps stand out is with their commitment to safety. Outpost Summer Camps has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association since inception and operates under permit from the County of San Diego as an Organized Camp. Stuart and his wife Kelly, a clinical psychologist, bring years of child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested 8 to 10 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. Colossus Painting Provides Its Customers With a Better Product for an Affordable Price
rior to starting Colossus Painting, Joshua Berner sold paint to contractors, using his expertise to teach them how to resolve issues and specify which types of paint would work best for a given project. It wasn’t long before Joshua decided to use his knowledge of the painting industry to start his own painting company and, in 2008, Colossus Painting was born. “I wanted to create a company that could serve customers much better and provide a better product for an affordable price,” Joshua explained. Today, Colossus Painting has made Joshua’s dream a reality by providing interior and exterior painting of homes and businesses, while also offering repair of stucco, drywall, and wood. “Colossus is unique in its approach to a project,” stated Joshua. “We tailor your job to the best system or options of systems for your home. This differs from a lot of other companies in the area.” Color retention is a big issue with exterior paint jobs here in San Diego as well as washability and durability they contend with on interior jobs. Colossus has solutions for this. “Our feeling is when your job is complete, it should stand out in appearance and longevity compared to those painted by someone else,” Joshua added. It’s important to note that a little paint can go a long way in changing the appearance of a home. “People forget about paint,” said Joshua. “It is a great way to make your home look great in a relatively short amount of time. We paint and stain a lot of cabinets, front doors, and garage doors.” From the beginning, the team at Colossus Painting has made an effort to give back. “We have helped a lot of schools and people,” explained Joshua. “We’ve painted homes for free. It’s a joy for us and our workers as much as it is for the homeowner who is having a difficult life situation.” Joshua is proud of his family-oriented, friendly, and professional staff. “I believe that when someone hires us, they realize they are dealing with a knowledgeable and professional company and will receive a great paint job,” shared Joshua. “We help the customer through the process and can get them the right tools to make their job successful.” 44 • 92067MAGAZINE.COM • April | May 2019
