It’s Boat Time
P U B L I S HE R
Derrick Breaux
I
’ve been champing at the bit to take the family out to San Vicente Reservoir. It reopened to the public this past fall after being closed since 2008 for the San Vicente Dam Raise Project, which created new emergency water storage for the region by raising the height of the dam. Our boat had been in storage since last summer. Needless to say, it needed a little cleaning to get ready for the water. Although I was alone with this thought, I felt cleaning the boat would be the perfect Saturday family project. After a long day using plenty of elbow grease – scrubbing, bribing, rinsing, twisting arms, and scrubbing some more – the boat was ready to go. Batteries charged. Oil checked twice (I learned my lesson the hard way on this, but that story is for another day). The expanded San Vicente Reservoir lived up to all the chatter. I think the new marina and boat launch is now the best in SoCal. The first boat ride of the season went well. Kids were nothing but smiles. My son took his turn at the helm and practiced his driving skills. My daughter giggled each time we encountered a wave. The engine sounded great, and the cool wind on our faces felt even better. I want to say the outing went without a hiccup, but we had a minor mechanical issue at the end of the day once we got the boat back on the trailer. My outdrive wouldn’t trim up into the travel position. Several people offered assistance. I politely declined, letting them know that I was contemplating leaving the boat behind and having someone deal with it the next morning. One gentleman, who had been out fishing with his buddies all day, wouldn’t take no for an answer. He jumped into my boat and handed me his business card (which showed he owned a boat repair service). Within minutes, he had his tool pouch Derrick Breaux out and my boat outdrive raised back into the proper towing position. Publisher When I thanked Dave of DCM Marine, he just said, “Hey man, that’s what boat people do. We take care of each other.” I couldn’t help but wonder how much better the world would be if everyone had a boating mentality and enthusiastically looked out for one another. Special thanks to Dave Perez of DCM Marine. If you need a knowledgeable boat guy for new and used parts, service, or repair, Dave’s your man. He can be reached at 619-913-0420. PRESERVE & PROTECT Paul Worthington Connects the Community With Nature by KELLEY GUSICH | photos by Soul of Photography

ncinitas resident Paul Worthington credits his parents for fostering in him an appreciation and love for the natural world. They moved to Rancho Santa Fe in the 1950’s, where Paul spent many hours outdoors. He explains, “As a family we spent many summers in Idaho visiting relatives. This is where I gained an even deeper appreciation for nature, the outdoors, and hiking, fishing, and camping.” Paul began selling real estate in 1980, then opened his own office on the coast in 1990. His mission as a Realtor – helping people with their goals – coincides with another aspect of Paul’s life: service to nature and our goals to protect it. He’s been a board member of the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy for nearly a decade, a nonprofit land trust for the San Elijo Ecological Reserve. He also served as secretary from 2010 to 2014. “As a board member, I have the unique opportunity to work with community leaders on our team to advance conservation and education initiatives for the Conservancy.” While San Elijo Reserve is protected, Paul and his community will always need to

keep saving its land and water and bringing children to the outdoors. “I want our youth to grow up loving nature and to join us on our watch.” Paul sees the greatest threat to our diversity of life as loss of habitat. That’s what makes SELC unique as a nonprofit land trust, with their collaboration in acquiring additional lands, expanding habitats for native species. “The Conservancy is member-supported,” Paul shared, “and we are grateful for all the grants and awards that fund our science-based youth curricula and all-ages special events and tours. Knowing that my volunteerism is bringing nature and community together makes me smile.” “I wish that everyone who has hiked the lagoon trails or simply enjoyed solace in nature would become a member of San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy,” Paul said. “With increased support and membership we could do even more – bring more children on field trips, enhance more habitat, and reach out to everyone about the value of cleaner air, lands, and waters so important to us all.” The Conservancy’s 30-year Celebration, Birds of a Feather, will be Oct. 7 at Lomas Santa Fe Country Club. Paul shared, “It’s one of North County’s celebrated events benefiting nature.” Visit www.sanelijo.org/volunteer for ways to join the movement.

Woman of the Year
LOCAL SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN’S ADVOCATE HONORED
A
ssemblymember Brian Maienschein recently honored Terri Colachis as the 2017 Woman of the Year for the 77th Assembly District in recognition of her dedication and volunteer work to benefit developmentally disabled children in the community. Terri is the board chair of San Diego-Imperial Counties Developmental Services, Inc., an organization that works with the Department of Developmental Services in helping people with developmental disabilities obtain improved living conditions. She is also the president of the Association of Regional Center Agencies, representing the 21 independent, nonprofit California Regional Centers which advocate on behalf of and provide necessary services to 300,000 people with developmental disabilities across the state.
Terri and her husband Gus have lived in the 77th Assembly District for over 32 years. Terri’s daughter Shea, one of her six children, was diagnosed with autism at 18 months old and is non-verbal. Her personal experience with a developmental disability inspired her to dedicate her life to help families in similar situations. “Terri is an exemplary volunteer and a devoted parent to her daughter Shea,” said Assemblymember Maienschein. “Her passionate support of those who are often overlooked and would otherwise have no voice in society is commendable.” Established in 1987 to help commemorate Women’s History Month, the Woman of the Year honor has become an annual tradition as part of the State Assembly’s efforts to celebrate California’s extraordinary women. Honorees are presented with a framed certificate from the State Assembly recognizing their outstanding contributions. ¢

RIDING CHAMPION THE REWARDS OF RIDING INSPIRE RANCHO SANTA FE STUDENT STAR JILLIAN STUART by KELLEY GUSICH photo by Soul of Photography
J
illian Stuart has shown horses across the country, from the Del Mar Horse Park to the Capital Challenge Horse Show in Maryland. Jillian began riding at age four, and what started with watching her oldest sister Savanah grew into multiple and far-reaching accolades of her own. “Before each show I really work on schooling the horses and making them as sharp and ready as they can be. It really is a team sport because both you and the horse rely on each other,” she said.

Besides champion as overall high point rider in her division, Jillian’s first big award came at the US Pony Finals in 2012, showing her small pony, Prima Ballerina. Out of 114 top ponies from across the country, she placed 14th overall in the Small Pony division, and High Pony Welsh Pony out of all sizes. Later that year, she competed in the West Coast Pony Finals and won out of all small ponies. “In 2012, I ended up fifth in the nation on Prima Ballerina,” she shared. On her current horse, Andover, Jillian won Champion Large Junior Hunter 15 and under, and High Point Junior and Amateur with PCHA. Jillian attends The Grauer School, and loves how flexible and accommodating teachers are with her busy competition schedule. “Along with riding, I also enjoy acting,” Jillian shared. “I have grown up watching movies every week with my family, and one day it struck me that I could be in them, so I enrolled in drama and immediately became immersed in theater.” She and her sisters started a business four years ago called Ballerina Bows, handsewing bows for sale online and to retailers across the country. Bows are worn during competitions, and most of the proceeds go to charitable horse-related organizations such as Saving Horses, LLC or the Compton Jr. Posse. “They (Compton Jr. Posse) sometimes compete at our competitions, and it is rewarding to see these students get the opportunity to compete.” Jillian’s future plans are to keep riding, and her goal is to attend USC for film acting. It might surprise people to know this about our 92067 student star: “I haven’t eaten any bacon or pork in 10 years,” she laughed, “because pigs are too adorable!”

he Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary recently received the prestigious Thomas F. Carter Leadership Award, which recognizes extraordinary volunteer leaders and philanthropists that are dedicated to the patients and families at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego. The award was bestowed to the Rady family in 2015 and originally given to Thomas Carter himself in 2000 for his exceptional leadership. “Rady Children’s Auxiliary is proud and honored to receive the Thomas Carter Award,” said Auxiliary President Mary Reynolds. “The Auxiliary’s mission is to advocate for, educate about, and fundraise for Rady Children’s Hospital. We have fulfilled that mission for 64 years, raising $70 million and touching every corner of the hospital. To be recognized for that achievement is extremely gratifying.” The Auxiliary was established in 1953 as a way to promote

A Voice for Children Elizabeth Lawlor Is Passionate About Caring for Foster Children by LINDA FRABL | photo by Soul of Photography
E
lizabeth Lawlor and her husband moved to Rancho Santa Fe from the East Coast three years ago in order to enjoy a better quality of life. Since then, Elizabeth had a son, who is now two years old, and became a stay-at-home mom. Elizabeth had left her job as an educational therapist, in which she worked with children who struggled with dyslexia and other learning challenges. She readily admitted, “I have a passion for helping children. I’m incredibly grateful for the support and opportunities I’ve been given, and I feel that it’s my responsibility to help others who may never be given the same chance.” That’s why, about a year after giving birth, Elizabeth decided to volunteer her time as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for Voices for Children (VFC), an organization that provides assistance to foster care children. With the ultimate goal of hopefully placing a foster child into a safe, permanent home, Elizabeth advocates on behalf of her assigned foster child in court, and regularly spends time one-on-one with that child. Discussing her motivation for becoming a CASA, Elizabeth explained, “After I had my own child, I couldn’t look at my son without thinking of all the children in the foster care system that might not have the love, care, and safety that he has. I had lost my father when I was five years old, and I vividly remember the feelings of powerlessness, insecurity, and fear that I experienced. If I can provide even a small amount of comfort to a child who is going through something similar, I feel it’s my way of giving back.” This worthwhile cause has many fundraising opportunities throughout the year. For example, on May 20, the 6th Annual Wine, Women & Shoes event will take place at the historic Canfield-Wright Estate in Del Mar. The biggest annual fundraiser for VFC is the Starry Starry Night event, which will take place on Sept. 9 at a private estate in Rancho Santa Fe. Elizabeth professed, “Attending these events is a wonderful way to support CASAs and the incredible work of this organization. A little bit of love can provide a lot of hope.”

Seaport is also host to several fun events throughout the year, like the Busker Festival in the spring and San Diego Symphony’s Bayside Summer Nights concert series in the warmer months. Though sometimes characterized as a tourist destination, San Diego’s Seaport Village is ideal for visitors and locals alike. And with the recent restoration of the adjoining Old Police Headquarters (now simply called “The Headquarters”), Seaport is the perfect blend of old and new. With restaurants, specialty boutiques, and even a fully restored eight-cell jail block surrounding a central plaza, The Headquarters gives new life to what was once the central location for all police operations from 1939 to the late '80s. The Headquarters hosts a number of events throughout the year as well, such as paired food and drink tastings, pizza making classes, Salsa Under the Stars dance night, and the CincoTeca Dos fiesta. Last year the Port of San Diego launched a major redevelopment effort for Seaport Village, a move that remains controversial, in order to revitalize the area and bring in more revenue. Proposed plans include turning Seaport into a mixed-use commercial development, retaining fishing facilities, adding a hotel, and creating a better connection to the heart of downtown San Diego. The Headquarters space would not be affected. The project has not yet been approved, however, and construction would not likely begin for at least a few more years, so you still have plenty of time to get down there and experience a beautiful day at Seaport Village! ¢

NCL SAN DIEGUITO HOLDS ANNUAL WALTZ DINNER TO HONOR SENIORS
M
embers of the 2017 class of the National Charity League (NCL) San Dieguito Chapter, along with their parents and escorts, celebrated their Waltz Dinner earlier this year. In preparation for their Senior Recognition, the girls, called Ticktockers, and their fathers and escorts enjoyed a waltz dancing lesson. Fathers made heartwarming toasts to their daughters and wives in recognition of their NCL journeys, and the evening concluded with the Ticktockers sharing letters they had written to their mothers aloud in front of the entire audience. “What poise and courage and confidence the girls demonstrated!” said grade level advisor and senior parent Marie Morse. The Waltz Dinner is a special tradition for the NCL senior class and a prelude to the chapter’s combined event in the spring. Founded in 1925, NCL is the premier mother-daughter organization of women and their daughters in seventh through 12th grade. The six-year
core program includes community service, leadership development, and cultural activities, empowering women to succeed as confident, wellrounded, and socially aware contributors to society. The program also serves to strengthen the motherdaughter relationship along the way. The organization has 63,000 members in 229 chapters in 26 states. NCL San Dieguito was established in 1998, starting many chapter traditions that still continue on today including the Fashion Show, Senior Presents, Mother-Daughter September Kick-Off Meeting, Ticktocker Day, Class Teas, and the Annual Chapter Awards and Tea. The chapter currently has 268 members and provides hands-on volunteer service for 24 philanthropic organizations in the community. For more information visit www.nationalcharityleague.org. ¢

7th Annual Bags & Baubles
A Spring Tradition
The Foundation for Animal Care and Education (FACE) will bring pet lovers and trendsetters together for a fashionable fundraising event with their 7th Annual Bags & Baubles event on Sunday, April 30. The silent auction will be held at a beautiful Rancho Santa Fe estate to raise funds and awareness for local pets in need of critical or life-saving veterinary care. Attendees will shop ‘til they drop and enjoy gourmet hor d’oeuvres, delicious wine, and estate tours, all for a good cause. Approximately 500 guests attended last year’s Bags & Baubles, which raised nearly $150,000 for pets facing life-threatening conditions. FACE is also accepting donations of new and gently loved high-end designer handbags, jewelry, accessories, and sunglasses for the event. “Donating an item to Bags & Baubles is the perfect way to do a little spring cleaning while simultaneously giving animals in our community a second chance at life,” FACE Executive Director Brooke Haggerty shared. Registration is now open at www.bagsandbaubles.org. FACE is a nonprofit 501(c)3 public charity that has saved the lives of over 1,650 animals to date. Those looking for information about sponsorships or making a tax-deductible donation to Bags & Baubles can contact FACE by calling 858-450-3223, visiting www.face4pets.org, or emailing events@face4pets.org.

Teams designed fabulous tabletop creations in a friendly competition for various titles such as Most Elegant, Most Unexpected, Most Amusing, and of course, Most Over the Top. Upon arrival, guests were greeted with champagne cocktails, and later were able to shop for goods from a variety of vendors. Best of all, the event helped to raise funds for RSFCC and its programs. Kelly Emberg, “The Model Gardener,” and Jerome Strack, general manager of The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, were in attendance as guest judges. New SDUHSD Superintendent The San Dieguito Union High School District (SDUHSD) Board of Trustees has named Eric Dill as the new superintendent. Eric has been serving as interim superintendent of the district since July 2016, following the departure of the former superintendent, Rick Schmitt. After joining the district in 2001, Eric was promoted to associate superintendent of business services in 2010. He has also held the positions of executive director of business services and director of risk management. “We have been impressed with Mr. Dill’s leadership of the district since he assumed the responsibility of interim superintendent last summer and are pleased that he has agreed to fulfill this role permanently,” said SDUHSD Board President Amy Herman. “He is the right person to lead the district, continue our traditions of excellence, and build upon the student success for which our district is known.” Eric’s appointment as permanent superintendent became effective immediately upon approval by the Board of Trustees at their meeting in January.
Plant, Grow, Eat
Rancho Santa Fe resident Jayden Gillespie was recently recognized as one of 60 Presidential Scholar in the Arts candidates for this year. Nominated from over 11,000 participants in the annual YoungArts Competition, if chosen Jayden will be the first male African American high school student to have earned the honor. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 to recognize some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors for their accomplishments in academic success, leadership, and service to school and community. It was expanded in 1979 to recognize students demonstrating exceptional scholarship and talent in the visual, creative, and performing arts. In 2015, it was expanded again to include students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical fields. For more information about the U.S. Presidential Scholars program visit www.ed.gov/programs/psp/awards.html.
The San Diego County Fair’s Plant*Grow*Eat program teaches elementary school students about the connection between agriculture and nutrition. After planting their seeds, watering, weeding their plants, and watching their garden grow, even kindergartners now understand where their food comes from. After growing their plants, students are bussed to the fair to see how their entries fared during judging. Asked to reveal the secret of their first-place lettuce medley, 2016 winners Arturo and Emily confided, “Extra water. When our plants looked dry, we gave them a little more.” Last year, the Don Diego Scholarship Foundation, thanks to the generosity of donors, sponsored 73 buses (typically, $300 per bus) that enabled students from low-income schools to participate in Plant*Grow*Eat. Bus sponsors receive publicity, bus signage, and an opportunity to meet and accompany the sponsored students to the judging area. Sponsors can also serve as a judge. The Foundation is currently looking for additional sponsors for Plant*Grow*Eat in order to keep this program flourishing for future generations. End the Homework Battle Therapeutic Literacy Center’s Summer Programs Help Students Reach Their Full Potential photos by Soul of Photography
I
s your child average to above average intelligence but not reaching their potential? Is your child taking too much time doing homework that should take only a few minutes? This can be changed. There are solutions. This summer is the time to make that happen before repeating the same pattern next school year. “When a child is of average to above average intelligence, yet learning is difficult or homework is a battlefield, then there may be an unidentified weakness in one or more of the underlying learning skills,” stated Maria Bagby, Executive Director of the Therapeutic Literacy Center (TLC), an organization renowned for its intensive therapeutic approach to fixing learning problems. “That can change. We do that every day.” “Just doing more of the same hasn’t worked. Schools and tutors are trained to work at the upper levels of the continuum (see graphic). Yet, if a child is having any kind of a struggle, it may be that the underlying skills are weak. When these are strengthened, students can be successful, independent, and joyful learners.” Therapeutic Literacy Center (TLC) does much more than literacy. They have become renowned for the results they get with fixing the challenges related to ADHD, auditory processing deficits, executive function as well as reading and writing
skills. These problems don’t fix themselves. How does it work? TLC plans everything they do to meet each individual need through one-on-one therapeutic programming and through small group offerings when appropriate. Why not take advantage of the summer months to change the patterns of last year? Students can raise themselves to grade level reading, master their math facts and improve their handwriting and writing skills. These skills are necessary, not only for success in the increasingly complexity of the Common Core curriculum, but also for life! As one parent said, “My child no longer feels like he is at the back of the class. His confidence has improved and so has our home life!” Use this summer to change your child’s future. ¢

Inventory at a Record Low – Why It’s Not A Bubble by SCOTT VOAK
M
arch opened with fewer homes for sale in San Diego than we had in March of 2004, which was the low point in inventory for the bubble. As inventory continues to fall, competition is heating up among buyers and prices are finally starting to move up. Last August, Keller Williams co-founder Gary Williams and some of his top local agents warned of a shift in the market and a cooling off. I disagreed for a number of reasons. Now that the market is continuing to accelerate, I am starting to hear people talk about a bubble. Once again, I’m going to disagree. We may cool off later this year, but it won’t be anything like a bubble. When a bubble bursts, prices collapse. Outside of a major world event, that will only happen with a dramatic simultaneous increase in supply and reduction in demand. While we could easily see a reduction in demand as prices push affordability out of reach, I believe any reduction in demand would be temporary and would reverse with a small correction in prices. I think a continuing shortage in supply is what will prevent a bubble from forming. With the amount of equity people have and the favorable interest rates people have locked in, I don’t see panic selling on our horizon. But what about the ability to move up? Unfortunately for many, I am seeing that opportunity constrained by the current market. As prices and interest rates
have risen, homeowners are finding themselves with increased equity, but without the ability to qualify for a larger loan. So, someone who put $100K down on a $500K house and finds the house worth $650K now has $250K in equity. But as rates have gone from the low 3% range to the low 4% range, they can’t qualify for a larger loan than they now have, and so they are stuck in their current home. This is the main reason we are seeing lower inventory today and the reason inventory will stay tight and prices will hold firm throughout this economic cycle. ¢

For the Love of Horses
VALENTI FOUNDATION HOSTS FUNDRAISER FOR LOCAL NONPROFIT
T
he Valenti Foundation hosted a fundraiser, For the Love of Horses, to benefit Saving Horses, Inc. (SHI) at the Valenti Equestrian Club in Rancho Santa Fe in February. Guests were treated to mimosas, hors d’oeuvres, gourmet chocolates, musical entertainment, and a silent auction. The event sponsor, Rolls-Royce of La Jolla, showcased three models from the collection and offered guests the opportunity to bid on the use of a Rolls-Royce vehicle for a weekend. For the past 10 years, Encinitas-based SHI has been rescuing horses from slaughter, abuse, and neglect, and rehabilitating and placing them in loving homes when possible. SHI currently has 12 sanctuary horses that are used in the Equine Assisted Therapy Program as well, which assists individuals with a wide range of disabilities. Through grants and charitable contributions, SHI is able to offer counseling scholarships to those that would
otherwise be unable to afford such a program. The Valenti Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded by Irene Valenti in 2005 as a way to give back to the global community. “When I learned about the need to raise funds for this local equine nonprofit organization, I knew immediately that I wanted to help,” Irene said. “I have rescued horses in the past and know that the maintenance costs quickly escalate to care for these magnificent animals, particularly for veterinary bills, feed, and housing. Because Saving Horses also offers therapy programs, we can save horses from neglect and treat individuals with medical conditions at the same time.” For more information about the Valenti Foundation visit www.valentifoundation.org.
