Please Support Local Businesses
I
’ve published community magazines for 11 years. And my father has been in the publishing industry his entire life. As a junior in high school, I remember the night that the United States started bombing military targets in Iraq and Kuwait. I went with my dad after midnight down to the local newspaper where he worked. I literally watched him order the press to be stopped, scrap the originally planned cover story, and print a new cover page telling its readers that America Is At War! It was one of the first times that I began to realize how the media worked and the impact that it has in our society. I was proud to get a glimpse behind the curtain. While we didn’t have a “stop the press” moment here at ZCode once our state and local communities began being ordered to shut down all nonessential businesses and shelter-in-place, it has certainly turned our small business community upside down. As a business owner, one must prepare for slow times and potential economic downturns – it comes with the responsibilities of entrepreneurship. However, a small business being prepared for all of its customers to vanish and immediately shut their business down is asking the impossible. How does one prepare for that? It’s never happened before. Although I understand that the shelter-in-place ordinance is necessary for the safety of everyone, my heart goes out to all of our advertising participants (that financially make this magazine possible) and other local community business owners. Most of them have shut down their business and made the difficult decision to furlough their employees – they didn’t have a choice. At this time, uncertainty as to when they will be allowed to open back up is the primary concern. Another concern is that when businesses are finally allowed to operate again, will the customers return fast enough to make it financially feasible to do so? One thing is for certain. We are all in this together. It’s going to take dedication and a willingness from the community to help small businesses get back on their feet. Businesses will need their customers back. It will take revenue for these businesses to be able to bring their employees back. WE CAN ALL HELP! If you are able to assist, I ask that you consider making a donation to local businesses that affect your life. Twenty dollars, 50 dollars, 100 dollars or more – it all adds up. Maybe it’s a local restaurant... Perhaps a local dentist or orthodontist... Consider your hair stylist, your child’s gym or dance studio, or even this magazine. Let the local businesses in your life know that you are there for them, appreciate them, and are willing to assist. We don’t know how the world will be after this crisis is over. But coming together as a community and supporting each other gives every business the best chance to land on their feet and continue providing the services and products that make our town so special. Stay healthy 92067 XXXXXreaders! readers!

ACTOR, ATHLETE, AND ACADEMIC

E
ven at the young age of 13, Max Leadley, a seventh grade honor roll student at The Nativity School in Rancho Santa Fe, has proven he can accomplish whatever goal he sets for himself. With a number of acting roles under his belt, such as Peter Pan, the Artful Dodger in Oliver!, Pumbaa in The Lion King Jr., and Alex the Lion in Madagascar Jr., it wasn’t until he decided to audition for the role of Buddy the Elf in the Trinity Theatre Company’s production of Elf Junior that Max truly strove for what he wanted. Max recalled, “Buddy became a dream role for me, so I found a theater company that was putting on the show. I prepared for my callback and audition non-stop by watching Elf the movie and various stage productions on YouTube, as well as working with my vocal coach, Brandon Sherman, on character exercises and songs from the show. Determination is exactly what you need to chase your dreams.” After being cast as Buddy, Max continued to hone his acting skills to master the nuances of the character. He explained, “Playing Buddy was not only mentally and physically challenging, but also vocally demanding. I grew so much as an actor, singer, and overall performer while learning such an amazing role.” Though Max is open about participating in theater, he thinks he might not appear that way at first glance, as he is also an athlete. “I’m unsure if I would go with a theater kid who plays sports or an athlete who acts, but I do love both.” Max plays water polo for Pacific Polo and football and basketball at Nativity. In addition to acting and sports, Max is on the Academic Decathlon team and leadership council at his school, takes lessons in voice, guitar, and ukulele, and writes scripts and songs. On top of all this, Max also gives back to the community through Teen Volunteers in Action. “I try to keep balance in my life and enjoy participating in lots of different activities,” he smiled. In the future, Max wants to act on Broadway, but he also plans to study law at Harvard. He professed, “Acting is my biggest dream, but I am also fascinated by the law. Who knows? Maybe I’ll get my law degree and also perform on either Broadway or on the big screen!” ¢

ancho Santa Fe’s Girl Scout Cadette Troop 3173 is continuing to meet, learn, and achieve while adapting to social distancing guidelines. The troop is continuing regular meetings and activities virtually, and the girls are currently working on the Girl Scout aMAZE! Journey for Cadettes, part of the It’s Your World – Change it! Journey series. Major themes of the aMAZE! Journey include developing healthy relationships, navigating cliques, and moving beyond stereotypes. Cadettes then team up on projects with younger girls, senior citizens, or classmates to share their new friendship-building skills. Troop 3173, led by Dr. Kristin Fairbanks, loves nature activities and recently went on a pre-coronavirus hiking adventure to San Dieguito
Park, where they combined letterboxing and geocaching treasure hunts with exploring the great outdoors. The troop is also active in the Girl Scouts Cookie Program each year, with girls achieving an average of 264 boxes of cookies. The troop looks forward to using this year’s cookie earnings to support Feeding America and for a future outing to Rawhide Ranch once social distancing guidelines ease. But for now, the girls will continue to make the most of their current circumstances. For more information about Girl Scouts San Diego visit www.sdgirlscouts.org. ¢

HARBAUGH SEASIDE TRAILS OPEN TO ALL photos courtesy of Nature Collective
H
arbaugh Seaside Trails, the three-acre coastal overlook linking Cardiff-by-the-Sea and Solana Beach, is now officially open to the public and accessible for hiking, wildlife photography, dog walking, and peaceful contemplation in nature, following a special grand opening celebration in February. The trails feature a wave-shaped walking trail, spectacular ocean views from the shell-shaped observation deck, over 8,000 native plants that represent four Southern California coastal habitats, and the donor monument designed by artist Betsy Schulz with lagoon wildlife-themed mosaics, uniting the Coastal Rail Trail art theme. Once slated for development for many years, the land was secured by Nature Collective, made possible by a $1.15 million gift from The Harbaugh Foundation, and is now designated permanent open space, open daily from sunrise to sunset. “We saved these views together!”
said Doug Gibson, Nature Collective Executive Director. “Today we celebrate – and generations will cherish what we refused to lose for our collective love of nature and community.” Harbaugh Seaside Trails is named in honor of the late George and Betty Harbaugh, San Diego philanthropists who directed their estate planning to benefit nature and community. “It has been an honor and privilege to work with Nature Collective and our community to preserve this amazing property and to make it accessible now and for future generations,” said Harbaugh Foundation Director Joe Balla. Experience the natural beauty of the trails firsthand and help restore coastal habitats with I Love A Clean San Diego’s 18th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup on Saturday, June 20. STUDIO WEST T
he Recording Arts Center at Studio West is pleased to announce that the year-long Diploma in Recording Arts program has been approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for VA funds. This means that The Recording Arts Center can continue to proudly serve veterans with the added benefit of funding support for the program. While the lack of fund support has not stopped veterans from joining the Diploma program in the past, now the Studio is able to better support a wider range of vets in starting a career in the field of audio engineering. “The approval by the VA’s office is a wonderful benefit that we are extremely pleased to offer our veteran students,” Peter Dyson, owner of Studio West, said in a recent interview. “The Diploma in
Recording Arts imparts so much useful knowledge and skill building that it has been a great way for our graduates to start a new career. That we are now able to offer it to more veterans with the support of their VA funds is amazing.” With the majority of eligible graduates and alumni using their knowledge to pursue a career, the year-long Diploma program offers a solid foundation for audio engineers. Classes are held in a worldclass studio and offer participants the chance to get hands-on experience in a professional environment. To learn more about joining the
program, with or without VA funds, please contact Todd Hunsaker, Director of Admission, at todd@StudioWest.com or 858-592-9497. More information can also be found at www.StudioWest.com. ¢

WISDOM TOOTH SURGERY NECESSARY? IS
by TARKAN SIDAL, DDS, MD
S
urgical management of impacted third molars (wisdom teeth) is a common treatment frequently offered in oral and maxillofacial surgery offices.
Despite how common the treatment is, removing wisdom teeth is not without controversy – some critics would argue that in the absence of disease or symptoms, patients would be subjected to pain, risk, and unfavorable economic outcome. However, strong peer reviewed research shows that retained wisdom teeth may involve periodontal pathology (gum disease) despite patients showing no symptoms. The negative impact of periodontal pathology may not be limited to the wisdom teeth region, but rather can have systemic (bodily) affects. Patients with no symptoms also may have carious wisdom teeth, eventually decaying the tooth next to it. Wisdom teeth should be considered for removal when there is clinical and radiographic evidence of acute or chronic periodontitis (gum disease), pericoronitis (infection and inflammation of excess tissue over the impacted tooth), negative impact on adjacent teeth or not enough space in the jaw forcing the teeth to erupt improperly and grow in
sideways, partially emerge from the gum, and even remain trapped beneath the gum and bone. In most patients some variation of these findings are present, making the person a candidate for wisdom teeth removal. In addition, wisdom teeth that are in the area of future jaw surgery or are interfering with orthodontic care also should be removed. All in all, the decision of wisdom teeth removal comes to life in most cases with two doctors bringing their expertise to the table, a general dentist and an oral surgeon. In an orthodontic care scenario, a general dentist, orthodontist, and oral surgeon may work in concert to make a recommendation in the patient’s best interest. Poorly positioned impacted teeth can cause many problems. When they are partially erupted or have a communication with the oral cavity, the gum opening around the teeth can allow food and bacteria to enter an uncleansible space around the tooth. This condition will eventually cause an infection and/ or cavities and gum disease. The result: swelling, discomfort, pain, and illness. The impingement from the incorrectly erupting wisdom teeth may damage other teeth and disrupt the natural alignment of teeth. The most serious problem occurs when tumors or cysts form around the impacted wisdom teeth, resulting in the destruction of the jawbone and healthy teeth. Removal of offending impacted teeth might prevent possible future problems of this nature. ¢

Essential Markets
Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito (BGCSD) held its 15th Annual Chip-In-For-Kids Golf Tournament in late January during the Farmers Insurance Open PGA Tournament at Torrey Pines Golf Course, raising $100,000 for programs benfiting local youth. Thirtyone foursomes competed in the 18-hole shamble, with Tyler Brett, Mark Edelstein, Eric Iantoro, and Matthew Jenusaitis taking first place with 113. Following their round, golfers were able to watch the PGA tournament from a private tent on the 15th hole of the South Course. Chip-In-For-Kids has raised $2.1 million in net proceeds over the past 15 years. “Through our annual, partnered events like Chip-In-For-Kids, we have created shared traditions of support for all our local youth,” said BGCSD CEO Marineke Vandervort. “Partners like The Century Club of San Diego play a vital role in our ability to impact the over 6,700 members that we serve each year.” Learn more at www.bgcsandieguito.org.
Many of San Diego County’s farmers markets remain open as essential businesses throughout California’s stay-at-home order, including the Rancho Santa Fe Farmers Market. The market is open Sundays from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 16079 San Dieguito Rd. – stop by for fresh air and fresh food. There are a few changes to keep the shopping experience safe for everyone. Vendors aren’t providing food samples, and the seating areas have been eliminated, so all food must be taken to-go. The market aisles are wider and vendor booths are spread out more to allow better social distancing. 4th Annual Little Black Dress Initiative In early March, Junior League of San Diego’s 4th Annual Little Black Dress Initiative raised $5,795 and 10 bags of clothing to support foster youth. The donations are focused on youths transitioning out of the foster care system, helping them access resources to find jobs or further their education. The Little Black Dress Initiative is a social media-driven fundraising campaign. Junior League volunteers wore the same black dress from March 9 through 13 and shared the campaign on their social media channels, raising awareness about the local impact of poverty. Junior League of San Diego has raised more than $21,000 for local foster youth since 2017. “This is our fourth year of starting the conversation around this difficult topic, and I’m so proud of not only the statistical achievements of our efforts, but how far and wide the message has spread,” said Emily Green Lake, president of Junior League of San Diego. “With any initiative, the goal is to create a conversation around important issues and our team of volunteers has done a great job of bringing awareness to the poverty challenges in our community.” Learn more at www.jlsd.org.

alifornia All-Stars Cheer (CAS) began its story 19 years ago in North County San Diego. With more than 1,000 athletes throughout six locations – San Marcos, the Bay Area, Las Vegas, Ventura, Ontario, and Scottsdale, AZ – CAS has worked its way to offering the most competitive cheer program in the state of California, gaining international recognition along the way as 12-time World Champions. “All-Stars encompasses all the fun aspects about cheerleading, including dance, stunts, bonding with friends, and gaining confidence and skill through performances. Building the children from the inside out is what we do, because we focus on them as a whole,” said Tannaz Kirichkow, Owner of CAS. “Our goal is to make sure our kids gain a strong sense of self-confidence that will carry on for the rest of their lives.” CAS offers tumbling camps in the summer, which focus on tumbling techniques for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. The camps can last two or three days and are three hours per day. Camps are open to both boys and girls. CAS provides a sense of work ethic and life lessons in each of its classes, including a sense of bonding and camaraderie for cheerleaders who travel to national and international competitions.
THEIR ATHLETIC SKILLS, EXPLORING THEIR CREATIVE TALENTS, OR DISCOVERING NEW WAYS TO LEARN – NORTH COUNTY SAN DIEGO’S SUMMER CAMPS ARE HERE TO INSPIRE THAT JOURNEY. THE FRIENDSHIPS AND MEMORIES MADE AT CAMP CAN LAST A LIFETIME. READ ALONG TO LEARN MORE IN ZCODE’S 2020 SUMMER CAMP GUIDE.

“People come to California All-Stars for top-quality coaching and family atmosphere,” explained Tannaz. “Life lessons, core values, and athletic excellence come hand-in-hand. We love to see our kids succeed on and off the floor!” CAS’s list of awards and recognitions includes 400 National Titles, Grand Champions, Program Champions, Innovative Choreography Awards, Judges Choice Awards, Paid Bids to the USASF Cheerleading Worlds, 2009 through 2013 World Champions, IALC Champions, 2010 through 2014 NCA National Champions, three silver medals at the 2008 Cheerleading Worlds, and 2013 Summit Champions. Marilee Chaney of North County said, “CAS is about positive attitudes. From the ‘can do’ approach toward all athletes
to seeing the staff enthusiastically hug a cheerleader when she gets a new tumbling skill – from the beginning, the message has been ‘you are capable, and you are welcome here.’” With a trained and energetic staff, spacious gym, and professional instruction, CAS has something for every budding cheerleader out there! Tryouts for new teams will be held May 13, 14, and 16, and students should preferably be there all three days. The tryout process determines team placement. CodeREV Kids

ith the growing popularity of STEAM programs in schools, many parents are turning to technology camps to keep their students entertained and engaged during summer months. CodeREV Kids is one of Southern California’s fastest growing tech camps, and according to Founder Evan Boorman, offers the only standards-aligned summer tech program that focuses on math and science. Evan explained, “I started CodeREV to answer the question so many students have: ‘Why? Why should I learn math, science, or engineering?’ In our project-based classes and curriculum, students automatically answer these questions for themselves, since they need to learn these topic areas to create the fun and amazing projects they build and code in camp.” CodeREV offers a variety of classes for kids ages 6 to 16 to appeal to all technology-based interests. Its MathCraft program uses the popular video game Minecraft to teach math, and its Adventures in Programming class covers 3D game design. Its most popular option, Minecraft Level Design & Engineering, applies STEAM concepts to building amazing contraptions inside Minecraft. With a total of 10 different classes to choose from, there is something for everyone at CodeREV. Evan has been teaching STEAM for 17 years, has created education software, and has started education technology companies. Evan’s partner, Chief Education Innovation Officer John Stuppy, Ph.D., holds a Master’s degree in Education Technology from Stanford and a Ph.D. in Education Reform from UCLA, and has been teaching and creating curriculum for coding aligned with math for three decades. Evan and John believe that their combined 50 years of experience, coupled with the most innovative teaching approaches in technology, are critical to bringing coding into mainstream education and preparing students for their future by getting them excited about using math, logic, and science.
