little over a year ago, I wrote about how our kids were taking music lessons and having fun learning to play and sing various popular songs. They are now into music more than ever before, and a lot has happened in a year. In case you are hearing about this for the first time, Peyton plays guitar and sings. Audrey plays drums and piano, but she insists that drums are her number one. The two of them have come a long way over the last year. For starters, they formed a band and decided to officially name their two-person “brother and sister” duo Call Me Breaux. When we discussed their name choice, both Audrey and Peyton explained that people have called them by their last name (pronounced “bro”) their entire life – especially in sports – so it just makes sense for a band name. When my wife and I realized how much they liked singing and performing, we started to gradually convert our dining room into a small music studio. On any given day, you can often hear some type of music being performed by one or both of them. And every once in a while, something magical happens when they come together and play their growing set of songs. It’s fun to be preparing dinner and hear your kids jamming out in the other room. Who needs a radio when you can get live performances inside your house daily? And although they love to play music for the pure sense of accomplishment, now they’ve experienced the thrill of performing live on stage. Last month, they were invited to play a set at the world-famous Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood. A couple of weeks later, they played the House of Blues in San Diego. This was particularly special for them because quite a few of their friends were at the show. They made it clear to me that having their friends in the audience was the coolest thing ever! It’s a pretty crazy thing to stand in the audience and watch your kids (ages 13 and 12) get up on stage in front of a crowd. As a parent, I experience a wide range of emotions. I’m nervous for them. I’m proud of them. And I’m amazed at their determination and willingness to put themselves out there. So far, they’ve only played cover songs. But recently, they have decided that writing and producing their own original songs is where they want to go. They said that it would be awesome to hear their songs playing on the radio one day, so now they are more determined than ever to make this happen. A special thank you to The Fine Tune Academy for continuing to teach music theory to our kids, to Studio West for providing a great local professional recording atmosphere, and to family and friends (you know who you are) that offer amazing support for their music journey. Be sure to check out their next performance at the House of Blues in San Diego on March 31. A limited number of discounted tickets are available. Email hello@callmebreaux.com for more information.

hough Dr. Kami Hoss moved to the United States from Iran as a teenager and grew up in Los Angeles, he now calls San Diego home. He and his wife have lived in San Diego for over 20 years, and have been at The Bridges at Rancho Santa Fe for two. “I’ve always felt San Diego is the best city in the world,” he said. “Rancho Santa Fe is the best town in San Diego, and the Bridges is the best part of RSF, so what’s not to love?” After attending University of California Los Angeles for his undergraduate studies and dental school, followed by University of Southern California for his post-doctoral residency, Kami, along with his wife Nazli Keri, started their own “WE LOVE SAN practice in San Diego called The DIEGO AND ARE Super Dentists, now the largest and most awarded pediatric PLANNING TO STAY dentistry and orthodontic practice in San Diego. He has been playing the piano and keyboard since he was young, and started to write his own music as a teenager. He has recently started writing music for The Super Dentists to further engage patients. “Music has been a big part of my life,” he said. “I always say if there was no music in my life, there would probably be no Super Dentists. Through a delicate balance of work, family, and fun, Kami knows he is exactly where he’s supposed to be. “We love San Diego and are planning to stay here forever. Fresh Happenings

The owners of Rancho Santa Fe's Spanish tapas bar César have renamed the restaurant Table Food + Drink, the final step of a long transformation that was officially completed in January. The refresh includes updated decor and a new menu with modern American fare, with things like buttermilk-fried chicken, panko-crusted Petrale sole, old-fashioned desserts, and whimsical cocktails. Check out the local spot's new concept in Del Rayo Center Tuesday through Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Street Food For the past several years, food trucks seem to have taken over the culinary scene in cities around the world. This modern dining option offers quick, gourmet food – anytime, anywhere. Mobile cuisine encompasses everything from burgers, hot dogs, tacos, and barbecue to grilled cheese sandwiches, bacon, macaroni and cheese, vegan food, and international fusions – each with their own unique twist. When you're craving something delightfully different (and convenient!) try one of the many food trucks cruising through North San Diego County.

The Gamache Family Finds Balance in Rancho Santa Fe by LINDA FRABL | photo by Soul of Photography

A

s busy parents who each operate their own respective dental practices, Andrew and Femme Gamache relish the relaxed oasis of Rancho Santa Fe, where they moved just last year with their three children, Bennett (7), Amelie (6), and Harper (4). Andrew professed, “We enjoy the balance between the sense of community for our young kids, as well as the peace of our surroundings.” Femme added, “We feel blessed and thankful that we get to raise our children here.” Andrew and Femme first met each other at dental school at University of Southern California, and the romance cemented itself when both were selected to travel to Belize to provide dental care to the impoverished children there. After their marriage, the couple lived in New York City until their first child was born, and then they eagerly moved back to their hometown state (Andrew was raised in San Juan Capistrano, and Femme is a native San Diegan). Femme exclaimed, “Our parents can now take on an extraordinary role in looking after our kids!” During their stint in New York, Femme was especially inspired by the woman she worked for, who had successfully balanced her

life as a wife, a mother, and a business owner. Femme admitted, “I knew that I could take what I observed, experienced, and learned, and build my own office.” She is also overjoyed for the help that the Rancho Santa Fe community provides for her and Andrew. She continued, “Because we work full time, our children are cared for by the school, the community center, and our parents!” Their oldest child, Bennett, is a second grader at R. Roger Rowe Elementary School, who indulges in robotics, piano lessons, and Cub Scout adventures. Amelie, a kindergartner at R. Roger Rowe, is a Girl Scouts Daisy who loves jujitsu. Harper, an animal lover who attends Happy Time Nursery, adores every opportunity to ride the nursery’s resident horse, Honeysuckle. Always cognizant of being there for their children, Andrew proclaimed, “Most of our free time is spent with the kids.” Femme agreed, stating, “Whether it is school activities, sports, or traveling, we do our best to enjoy our time with them.” The Gamaches have successfully mastered the delicate balance between work and play, and Rancho Santa Fe is the ideal place for them to unwind and connect as a family. ¢

Innovation and Inspiration LOCAL ROBOTICS TEAM WINS INSPIRE AWARD

F

our Rancho Santa Fe robotics teams from R. Roger Rowe School – RSF Singularity, RSF Intergalactic Dragons, RSF Logitechies, and RSF Virtual Vipers – recently competed in the San Diego FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) League Tournament held at Tri-City Christian School in Vista, three of which advanced to the San Diego Regional Championship. RSF Singularity, which consists of team members Brandon Powell, Dylan Powell, Jacob Malter, Kanvar Soin, Jack Pollin, Carlee Weber, and J.T. Young, took home top honors by earning the prestigious Inspire Award. The judged award is given to the team that most embodies the “challenge” of the FTC program, is a gracious competitor, and serves as an inspiration to other teams. FTC is a program for students in grades 7 through 12, designed to inspire young people to be innovators and leaders in science and

technology. Teams work together to design, build, program, and operate a robot to compete in a head-to-head challenge with other local teams. Contribute to WISDOM for Breast Cancer Screening Five University of California medical centers, including Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, have joined together to recruit 100,000 women in California to be part of the Women Informed to Screen Depending on Measures of Risk (WISDOM) clinical trial. “Screening guidelines for breast cancer have changed many times over recent years and seem to be in a constant state of flux,” said Andrea Z. LaCroix, Ph.D., professor and chief of epidemiology in the department of Family Medicine and Public Health at University of California San Diego School of Medicine and co-principal investigator in the study. “The WISDOM trial’s goal is to test annual screening versus a personalized schedule based on a woman’s clinical and genetic risk factors for breast cancer. The study should determine which strategy produces the most benefit for women and the least harms.” To participate, women must be between 40 and 74 years old and not have had breast cancer. Women do not need to be a patient at UC Health medical centers. For more information or to become a study participant visit www.wisdomstudy.org

The 3rd Annual Coast to Crest 10K and 5K Trail Race will take place on the San Dieguito River Park trails in Del Mar on March 10. The race has previously only been a 5K, but with the recent addition and completion of the new trail along Jimmy Durante Blvd., it was upgraded to a full 10K course this year. The flat, all-dirt course along the scenic San Dieguito River Park lagoon trail is great for runners of all levels, and especially ideal for sprinters and those looking to set personal records. The event will include an expo, post-race food, as well as finisher’s medals and commemorative t-shirts for all participants. The Coast to Crest Trail will someday link over 70 miles of trails and paths from Del Mar to Volcan Mountain near Julian. For more information visit www.sdrp.org. Bench Project Serves Hundreds in Mexico Local nonprofit Sustainable Surplus was recently tasked with finding a new home for 150 used bus stop benches from the City of San Diego. The benches, which were headed to Miramar Landfill, are made of difficult-to-recycle and non-decomposing fiberglass material. When no use was found for the benches in San Diego, Sustainable Surplus CEO Sue Prelozni reached out to Adolfo Delgado, Binational Coalition of Nonprofits (BCN) partner and executive director of the Comité Binacional Unidos por la Niñez (CBUN) in Mexico. With Adolfo’s help, the benches were refurbished, repurposed, and distributed to several cities throughout Mexico, where they will be used in parks, churches, schools, and community centers. BCN was founded in 2017 to facilitate the handling of donated items that cannot be reused or repurposed locally, resulting in at least 12 crossborder donations in the past year. The Pacific Ridge School Boys’ Varsity Basketball team, consisting of students from Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Rancho Santa Fe, took part in their annual holiday meal delivery to La Posada de Guadalupe, a shelter for homeless men and farm workers, in January. The team arrived to the shelter for the fourth time with trays full of food, and got to talk with the men there to learn more about their backgrounds. “The boys jumped right into it,” said Basketball Coach Chris Burman. “It’s a way for them to see that they can have a positive impact locally, right here within our community.” The team also traveled to Tijuana over the summer to host a basketball clinic in an underserved community there, where they taught basic basketball skills to over 30 children and played friendly scrimmages against local basketball clubs. R E A L E S TAT E W AT C H

A Look at 92067’s Real Estate Numbers by JESSICA BREAUX

T

he figures are in for January, and the numbers remain mixed for home sales in 92067. A quick comparison to the same time period last year shows some minor fluctuations. 92067 experienced an increase of new listings hitting the market in January with a total of 61 new single family home listings, compared to 51 new listings in January 2017 (an increase of 19%). However, the total inventory of single family homes for sale was down 25% with 153 homes available for purchase (versus 206 during the same period last year). The average number of days that homes were on the market during January was 85 days (compared to 114 days in January 2017). The 25% faster selling time is consistent with the drop in inventory supply, but this market time varies greatly month after month in 92067.

As we all know, the values of homes in 92067 can have huge fluctuations due to the wide range of selling prices. The values of recent homes sold are up compared to January of last year. The median sales price of a 92067 single family home during the month of January was $2,775,000 (compared to last January’s $1,622,500 median price), but we must exercise caution when evaluating this comparison. If you are considering making a move, you should still be able to do so with confidence. Give me a call to schedule a meeting. It’s important to work with someone that you trust, and I would love the opportunity to get to know you, earn your trust, and discuss your real estate goals. ¢
