little over a year ago, I wrote about how our kids were taking music lessons and having fun learning to play and sing various popular songs. They are now into music more than ever before, and a lot has happened in a year. In case you are hearing about this for the first time, Peyton plays guitar and sings. Audrey plays drums and piano, but she insists that drums are her number one. The two of them have come a long way over the last year. For starters, they formed a band and decided to officially name their two-person “brother and sister” duo Call Me Breaux. When we discussed their name choice, both Audrey and Peyton explained that people have called them by their last name (pronounced “bro”) their entire life – especially in sports – so it just makes sense for a band name. When my wife and I realized how much they liked singing and performing, we started to gradually convert our dining room into a small music studio. On any given day, you can often hear some type of music being performed by one or both of them. And every once in a while, something magical happens when they come together and play their growing set of songs. It’s fun to be preparing dinner and hear your kids jamming out in the other room. Who needs a radio when you can get live performances inside your house daily? And although they love to play music for the pure sense of accomplishment, now they’ve experienced the thrill of performing live on stage. Last month, they were invited to play a set at the world-famous Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood. A couple of weeks later, they played the House of Blues in San Diego. This was particularly special for them because quite a few of their friends were at the show. They made it clear to me that having their friends in the audience was the coolest thing ever! It’s a pretty crazy thing to stand in the audience and watch your kids (ages 14 and 12) get up on stage in front of a crowd. As a parent, I experience a wide range of emotions. I’m nervous for them. I’m proud of them. And I’m amazed at their determination and willingness to put themselves out there. So far, they’ve only played cover songs. But recently, they have decided that writing and producing their own original songs is where they want to go. They said that it would be awesome to hear their songs playing on the radio one day, so now they are more determined than ever to make this happen. A special thank you to The Fine Tune Academy for continuing to teach music theory to our kids, to Studio West for providing a great local professional recording atmosphere, and to family and friends (you know who you are) that offer amazing support for their music journey.

iscovery Hills resident Miranda Leight earns her star status both at school and on hockey skates. Miranda works hard as a fifth grade student at Discovery Elementary and as an athlete on the all-girls San Diego Jr. Gulls ice hockey team. Miranda’s interest in ice hockey was piqued after watching a Los Angeles Kings hockey game on television. “My mom found out there was a free learn-to-play hockey lesson at Ice-Plex in Escondido,” Miranda explained. “So, I began learning to skate and play hockey.” Her first season, she found herself the youngest girl on the team at the age of nine. Today, she is in her second season with the all-girls Jr. Gulls team, the first all-girls youth hockey team in San Diego. Since its inception last year, the girls’ team has won multiple silver medals at tournaments. Miranda enjoys her time playing with the team but admits it’s not without its challenges. “The most rewarding part of hockey is probably seeing the smiling faces when I succeed and the friends I make on the team,” she acknowledged. “The most challenging part is probably learning new skills and to accept failure.” Miranda also had the opportunity to travel to Maryland for a girl’s hockey

tournament. The side trip to Washington, D.C. and a tour of the capitol building was an extra bonus during their time off the ice. At Discovery Elementary School, Miranda has been recognized several times as the Student of the Month. She is a part of the Tech Squad, helping teachers and other students with technology, and also serves as a mentor to her “little buddy” in a younger grade.

“THE MOST REWARDING PART OF HOCKEY IS PROBABLY SEEING THE SMILING FACES WHEN I SUCCEED AND THE FRIENDS I MAKE ON THE TEAM.” Miranda also volunteers at the ice rink. Knowing how important the free learn-toskate day was for her, Miranda now helps the younger kids learn to play during the free lessons. She is looking forward to playing hockey in college and has set her sights to play for the National Women’s Hockey League. 

former fitness professional, Lisa Druxman spent time as the general manager at The Sporting Club in La Jolla. This is where she really learned to run a business. With her first child, Jacob, their best hour of the day came when they were out with the stroller. He loved being outside and Lisa loved breathing in the fresh air and getting in shape, but she was still feeling overwhelmed with questions about new motherhood. Her ‘A-ha’ moment came when she decided to start the business we all know and love: Stroller Strides. This concept, created to keep new moms in shape and help them answer all their motherhood questions, had over 1,000 participants within the first year and started getting requests from all over the country. “This was before Facebook or social media,” Lisa smiled. “It was pure word of mom.” As her kids grew up – Jacob is now 17 and Rachel is 13 – the company grew too. They added more programs like FitBaby and Body Back, so the business was rebranded as FIT4MOM. With nearly 300 franchises and 2,000 class locations nationwide, Lisa realized she couldn’t fully support the business and the family if she tried going it alone. “I now have an incredible CEO and team who truly run the operations of the company.” This allows her to do what she loves, which is inspiring people through her books, podcasts, and speaking engagements. Lisa’s team calls her the ‘Idea Monkey’ because she is never short of ideas, and is excited to be set to release a new FIT4MOM digital program for pregnancy. “I personally am also working on some new digital programs that are based around helping people create new habits and behaviors in their lives.”

“My new book, The Empowered Mama, is like a guidebook for moms so they can reclaim their time, their lives, and themselves,” Lisa shared. The thousands of moms Lisa has met since she started Stroller Strides all confirm the same thing: they feel overwhelmed, stressed, isolated, and way too busy. She uses the oxygen mask analogy to demonstrate. “Moms all know they are supposed to put their own mask on first but they don’t know how to do it; that’s what I hope this book does,” Lisa said. “It helps moms reconnect with their values and their vision for their family and their life.” 

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER

LOCAL VOLUNTEER JEANNINE MELVILLE OFFERS HER SUPPORT TO OTHERS IN NEED by KELLEY GUSICH | photo by Kilalio Photography

“W

hen we moved here in 2013, we never thought we’d like it more than Huntington Beach. We were wrong,” said San Elijo Hills resident Jeannine Melville. “My husband works at Northrup Grumman, and our wonderful eight-year-old daughter attends school in town,” she explained. “She loves sloths, her friends, fashion, and drama – classes, that is.” When the Melvilles first arrived, Jeannine struggled to find a way for her and her daughter to serve the homeless community in a safe place for them both, especially since many places don’t allow children. To solve the problem, Jeannine started a group called SHE’s that FEED to manage and automate a service for the homeless population. “We were so happy to discover Fill-a-Belly, a group who serves the homeless every Tuesday at Holiday Park in Carlsbad and Cottonwood Creek Park in Encinitas since 2008.” Each month, Jeannine coordinates seven to eight families to serve food to 40 or 50 guests. Rather than cooking, she has felt her calling to be “in front of the table.” SHE’s that FEED serves the food on the first Tuesday of each month, and over the past three years, thousands of people – spouses, children, neighbors, and friends – have participated. “It may sound odd, but I feel led and drawn to certain people. I like to hear their story and find where I can be of service,” Jeannine shared. “Sometimes that might be just listening. However, in the past, I’ve been able to offer resources and support in other areas such as getting into treatment or sober living homes, providing medical/legal resources, recovering impounded belongings, and reconnecting with loved ones.” She’s also coordinated various drives such as a sock drive and a bra drive for women. Fascinated with personal growth and development, Jeannine loves attending seminars and reading books on various subjects. She’s also into food, health, and beauty trends, with current favorites being keto diets, Bulletproof coffee, and

It’s something that started the beginning of the new year. I don’t know what’s come over me, but I hope it stays.” San Marcos is also glad Jeannine is staying with her fantastic volunteer service to the community.  Name: Community: Volunteer Affiliation: Profession: Family: Hobbies & Interests: Name of Group: Group’s Purpose:

Walking with a Purpose

ANNUAL AWARENESS WALK HIGHLIGHTS A COMMUNITY ISSUE photo by Jackie Piro Huyck

T

he Soroptimist International of Vista and North County Inland (SIVNCI), which serves the communities of Vista, San Marcos, and Escondido, recently sponsored the 12th Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Walk to shed light on the impact of sexual exploitation in the community. More than 150 local community members gathered with signs to march. Retired FBI agent Masayo Halpin spoke of her experiences with task forces in Portland, OR to stop human trafficking, and about a girl involved in human trafficking who, after consistent care, was able to escape her hardships. Jaimee Johnson, founder of the nonprofit Sisters of the Streets and peer counselor with Project LIFE, a program part of the North County Lifeline

PATIENT-FIRST PHILOSOPHY Palomar Medical Center Escondido Recognized as a Center of Excellence by LIZ ONUFER | photo provided by Palomar Health

n 1950, when the original Palomar Memorial Hospital opened its doors, Escondido was a sparsely populated town. More than 60 years later, in 2012, the hospital went through a complete transformation, opening a 56-acre campus to meet the needs of a much larger community. Today, the Palomar Medical Center Escondido serves as the only trauma center in North County, and its emergency department is one of the ten busiest in the entire state. The medical center is home to a full range of medical services, including trauma and emergency, a birth center, neuroscience services, rehabilitation, oncology, and an on-site pharmacy. The Cardiology and orthopedic programs are nationally recognized as a center of excellence. The medical center is also a part of the Mayo Clinic Care Network. Bloomberg Businessweek named the medical center the “Hospital of the Future.” The Top Masters in Healthcare Administration ranked it as the fifth most technologically advanced hospital in the world in 2014. Across all the services, the center is defined by its patient-first philosophy. “While Palomar Medical Center Escondido contains all the latest in technological advances, what sets it apart is the patient-centered culture and family-friendly environment,” explained Derryl Acosta, Public Relations Manager. The difference can be seen in the rooms designed to accommodate families to stay 24 hours a day and the rehabilitation process that encourages

family participation. “All levels of staff from the Chief of Nursing to the mail room focus on providing elite customer service,” Derryl said. This philosophy is highlighted in its staff. Last year, Roxanne Joy Olegario was recognized as the Palomar Medical Center Escondido Nurse of the Year. After watching nurses care for her sick grandmother, she was inspired to get into nursing. Roxanne shared her favorite thing about her job is “watching people get better, helping them get through their sickness, and bonding with families.” The medical center’s Physician of the Year, Dr. Amanda Caparso, acknowledged, “You have to laugh and smile and show your patients that you want them to be happy.” The medical center also hosts a number of no-cost health education classes led by medical

Water Safety in San Marcos

New Captain at Sheriff ’s Station

May is National Water Safety Month, and as 92078 heats up, the City of San Marcos is hosting a number of events to celebrate summer while keeping the community safe. Head to Las Posas Pool on April 14 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. for April Pool’s Day, a free afternoon of games and activities designed to teach water safety while having fun. Water Safety Day will be held on May 12 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Woodland Park Pool, with more games, activities, and free swimming, as well as an inflatable obstacle course. National Water Safety Month partners with The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals, American Red Cross, World Waterpark Association, and National Recreation and Park Association to promote water safety through educational programs. Find out more at www.nationalwatersafetymonth.org. Learn more about upcoming City events at www.san-marcos.net.

The San Marcos Sheriff’s Station recently welcomed Dave Brown as its new captain. Captain Brown began his career with the San Diego Sheriff’s Department as a probation department intern 28 years ago, and has since worked throughout the county in a variety of roles. Captain Brown has worked in homicide, as a special assistant to the sheriff, and in special investigations-criminal intelligence. His accolades include earning the Medal of Lifesaving as a patrol deputy. His daughter is currently attending California State University San Marcos (CSUSM), and his son is a CSUSM graduate. “Captain Brown is a well-respected member of the sheriff’s department and we are fortunate to have this capable lawman assigned to our City,” said City Manager Jack Griffin. “We have welcomed Captain Brown to San Marcos and look forward to partnering with him and all the dedicated employees at the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station.”

Economic Development Recognized The City of San Marcos was recently recognized with an Award of Merit by the California Association for Local Economic Development (CALED) – a first economic development honor for the City. The award highlights the City’s outreach about recent and ongoing economic development as the region’s business power continues to grow. “Our businesses are a critical piece of our local economy, supplying more than 40,000 jobs here in San Marcos,” said Tess Sangster, Economic Development Manager. She accepted the award on the City’s behalf at CALED’s annual conference. “When we empower our businesses to succeed, the entire community benefits.” Economic development has been a top priority in recent years. “We contribute a $7.9 billion annual GDP to the regional economy,” Sangster explained. “And as North County’s education hub, we also produce 10 percent of the region’s total academic program completions. This recognition rightfully puts San Marcos on the map.”

Bench Project Serves Hundreds in Mexico Local nonprofit Sustainable Surplus was recently tasked with finding a new home for 150 used bus stop benches from the City of San Diego. The benches, which were headed to Miramar Landfill, are made of difficult-to-recycle and non-decomposing fiberglass material. When no use was found for the benches in San Diego, Sustainable Surplus CEO Sue Prelozni reached out to Adolfo Delgado, Binational Coalition of Nonprofits (BCN) partner and executive director of the Comité Binacional Unidos por la Niñez (CBUN) in Mexico. With Adolfo’s help, the benches were refurbished, repurposed, and distributed to several cities throughout Mexico, where they will be used in parks, churches, schools, and community centers. BCN was founded in 2017 to facilitate the handling of donated items that cannot be reused or repurposed locally, resulting in at least 12 crossborder donations in the past year. Rob Schupp, Director of Marketing and Communications for the Metropolitan Transit System, said, “This is a great example of agencies coming together to find solutions that are good for the planet.” For more information visit www.sustainablesurplus.org.

26th Annual Spring Festival The San Marcos Chamber of Commerce presents its 26th Annual San Marcos Spring Festival and Street Fair on Sunday, April 8. The local tradition has free admission and highlights local talent on the community stage, over 250 local and national vendors, a beer garden, and live music. The kid’s festival includes carnival rides and other attractions. The San Marcos Chamber is dedicated to promoting the region’s economic success and fostering a healthy business environment. Learn more about the Spring Festival and Street Fair and other chamber events at www.sanmarcoschamber.com.

Super STEM Saturday

SAN MARCOS CELEBRATES SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

T

he 10th Annual San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering closed its 10 days of educational fun with Super STEM Saturday, an interactive science festival drawing thousands of attendees to the California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) campus. Super STEM Saturday is hosted by CSUSM in partnership with The Classical Academies and attracts over 10,000 participants every year. This year was no exception, despite the slight rain. The all-day event included handson activities, live demonstrations, and chemistry and Rubik’s Cube competitions. From launching rockets and programming robots to learning the science behind theater production and animal conservation, there was something for every local science enthusiast. A highlight was a chance to learn about California Rescue Dog Association, a nonprofit organization that trains and deploys search dog teams to find missing persons throughout the state.

“Super STEM Saturday’s purpose is to develop in everyone who attends an appreciation and understanding of the role science and engineering plays in our daily lives and how its practical applications solve critical problems and real-world issues,” said Katherine Kantardjieff, Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics. San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering continues its educational mission year-round with the STEM in Your Backyard program, which hosts miniature versions of the festival in neighborhoods throughout the county. The ABCs of Osteoarthritis

The arrival of Spring means it’s time to get out and enjoy the great outdoors! So don’t let your osteoarthritis (OA) keep you from enjoying a more active lifestyle. Also called degenerative joint disease, OA is one of the most common chronic diseases among U.S. adults. It affects about 30 million people and is characterized by pain and stiffness in the hands, knees, hips, and other areas. In people age 50 or older, OA is usually a natural result of normal wear and tear on your joints. In healthy joints, cartilage and synovial fluid allow the ends of your bones to glide smoothly over each other during movement. Over time, the layer of cartilage can wear down or break away and synovial fluid becomes thinner, causing the pain and stiffness, limited range of motion, and creaking sounds associated with OA. In younger people, OA is often the result of joint injury or overuse. Treatment of OA Most doctors recommend a combination of self-management and medication to treat OA. In the most severe cases, surgery may be recommended. n Heat and cold. Applying mild heat to sore areas increases blood flow to your joints. Cold packs (bags of ice or frozen vegetables wrapped in a towel) help by numbing the painful area. n

Physical activity. It may seem counterintuitive, but regular, gentle exercise, including light weight

training, yoga, and tai chi can help strengthen nearby muscles and tendons and increase range of motion.

n

n

n

n

Weight loss can help reduce the stress on weight-bearing joints such as knees and hips. Medication. Over the counter drugs, such as non-steroidal-anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and acetaminophen, block the production of pain causing chemicals. Be aware that both can cause serious side effects and are not intended for longterm use. If OTCs aren’t effective, ask your Physician about prescription alternatives. Acupuncture. Some studies have shown acupuncture to be effective in treating OA as well as back and neck pain, chronic headaches, and shoulder pain. Surgery. If you’ve explored all other options and still can’t find relief, your Primary Care Physician may refer you to an Orthopedic Surgeon. An Orthopedist will determine whether you’re a candidate for surgery, and which surgical option might work best for you, based on your disease progression, age, activity level, overall health, ability to take time off work, and other factors.

By working with your Physician to manage your OA, it's fully possible to return to the outdoor activities you love!

KNIGHT INSIDER

by ASHLEY BALBO special to 92078 Magazine

Knights News Presents #KnightsAnd

W

ith a school as diverse as San Marcos High School (SMHS), there is an inevitability of having a wide range of talented students. SMHS’s Knights News broadcast system has taken the challenge this year to highlight some of these uniquely talented students by interviewing them about their passions in a new segment called #KnightsAnd. The segment #KnightsAnd was introduced this year by SMHS teacher Zachary Steven-Wills. Mr. Wills had seen a video called #RaceAnd, which reminded him of the diversity of the students at SMHS. He felt inspired by the video and pitched the segment idea to the Knights News TV

Production class, who built off his idea to create what is now the segment. Support for this comes from the idea that, according to Mr. Wills, “There are a lot of students that are Knights and do other cool things off campus without recognition, and we should celebrate these students so others can try these new things and learn from each other.” Jeremy Ferebee, the teacher for the TV Production class, supported the idea wholly. The segment is important to him because “it gives an in-depth look at our community and shows what similarities the students may have.” Allowing students to see their peers in a new light gives students the opportunity to bond and learn from each other.

Cameron Hicks, a senior at SMHS, was the star of the latest #KnightsAnd segment with his unique passion of rock climbing. Hicks was excited to see how his classmates “were shocked to see what I do… Everyone applauded, and I thought it was really amazing.” This recognition opens a new door for SMHS’s community to become closer and lets the school’s diversity be something students can see as a connection, rather than a dividing factor. 

A Look at 92078’s Real Estate Numbers by JESSICA BREAUX

T

he figures are in for February, and the numbers remain quite strong for home sales in 92078. A quick comparison to the same time period last year shows some minor fluctuation, so let’s take a quick look at some of the highlights. 92078 experienced a slight increase of available inventory in February with a total of 54 new single family home listings hitting the market, compared to 40 new listings in February 2017, an increase of 35%. The total inventory of single-family homes for sale was also up 10% with 51 homes available for purchase, versus 46 during the same period last year. Although the available inventory was a little higher than last year, the average number of days that homes were on the market until sold during February was only

17 days, versus 43 days last year, which shows that homes are in high demand. Home values are very strong and continue to be at or near the all-time high. The median sales price of a 92078 single-family home during the month of February was $728,000, an increase of 1.6% compared to last February’s $716,500 median price. Year to date, the median sales price for a singlefamily home in 92078 is holding steady at $735,000. If you are considering making a move, you should be able to do so with confidence. Give me a call to schedule a meeting. It’s important to work with someone that you trust, and I would love the opportunity to get to know you and discuss your real estate goals. 
