Mother’s Day

A

lthough Mother’s Day was last month, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to write about it this issue. I have been blessed with great mothers surrounding me throughout my life. As we celebrate Mother’s Day each year, I often reflect on my childhood, teenage years, and young adulthood. I was raised by a very strong and supportive mother, and as a first grandchild, I also spent many of my younger years with my grandmother. Unfortunately, these two wonderful women are no longer with us today, but the memories and life lessons that I received from them are forever held close to my heart. Having lost my mother to a tragic automobile accident back in 2010 and my grandmother to cancer more recently, you would think that Mother’s Day would approach with some apprehension. However, much to my pleasant surprise, I’ve discovered that Mother’s Day has become one of the most meaningful holidays of the year. Even though the day typically starts with a little sadness – more like a period of reflection – it quickly turns into a very deep and significant day. Not only do I have an opportunity to celebrate the great memories surrounding my mother and grandmother, I also have the privilege of having several more fantastic mothers that surround me, support me, and make our lives more meaningful. While there are too many wonderful mothers in our friends and family sphere to mention in this letter, I would like to take a moment to recognize a few of them. First on the list, I would like to thank my wonderful wife, Jessica, for being such an awesome mother to our three kids (as well as many of the neighborhood kids). There are quite a few kiddos around the community (some adults in college now) that have grown up calling you “Momma” Breaux. We are all lucky to have you do what you do. Happy Mother’s Day, Jessica! Derrick Breaux I would also like to take a moment to send a heartfelt Publisher thank you to my mother-in-law Trish and mother-in-law Doreen. Not only are you both incredible influences on our family, but you are also wonderful grandmothers to our kids. We are all extremely happy to have you be a major part of our lives. Happy Mother’s Day, Trish and Doreen! Last but not least, I would like to recognize my sister. Not only are you a great sister, you are also a wonderful mother. I find great joy in watching the way you raise your three children, often displaying the incredibly familiar and nurturing parenting that our mother used with the two of us growing up. It warms my heart beyond words. Happy Mother’s Day, Angelique! And a belated happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers in the world (past and present) that have impacted our lives. I hope your Mother’s Day was filled with lots of hugs, special memories, love, and laughter.

Leader TRUE

LEAH KABLER IS RECOGNIZED FOR HER GOOD DEEDS by LINDA FRABL | photo by Jessica Breaux

L

eah Kabler is an eighth grader at San Elijo Middle School who truly cherishes her educational experience. She admitted, “My teachers inspire me every day to do better and to never give up.” She has not one, not two, but three favorite subjects: English, science, and history. As for the latter, Leah exclaimed, “I like history because it is interesting to learn about the past and see how it relates to our society today.” The society Leah lives in today is definitely better because of her volunteerism. Her community service efforts include helping to run a Halloween party with the Elfin Forest Fire Department and planning an e-recycle event through her school’s AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program. In addition, Leah is in the Leadership in Training (LIT) program at the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos, where she lends assistance as needed. Leah stated, “I sweep up the classrooms, collect the ball bag, and bring in the clipboards.” Her good deeds have earned Leah the coveted 2018 Junior Youth of the Year title, bestowed on her by the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos. Leah gushed, “The award means a lot because it indicates that when you do the right thing it shows, even if you are not recognized immediately.” Always hopeful that others feel recognized too, Leah revealed that she adores San Marcos because it is so inclusive. She elaborated, “I love that San Marcos is so diverse, because it is very important for everybody to feel welcome and comfortable in their community. Everyone should be exposed to a diverse community at some time in their life.” In the future, Leah wants to attend a university in either Florida or North Carolina, and eventually become a children’s pulmonologist. She also aspires to play softball at her college, which she is currently playing through the City of San Marcos. Leah added, “I learned about the softball tryouts after reading about it in an issue of 92078 Magazine!” As for her perfect summer wish, Leah commented, “I have always dreamed of having a summer where you can hang out with your friends in the park and run around instead of being on your phone. If more kids did that, then others may join them, and we would be much happier.” Spoken like a true leader. 

LOCAL EMPLOYER RECOGNIZED FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION INVOLVEMENT

T

he North Coastal Consortium for Special Education (NCCSE) Community Advisory Committee recently recognized a local San Marcos businessman for his work with the organization’s WorkAbility 1 program. Fairfield Inn & Suites San Marcos manager Dallas King received the Employer Excellence in Special Education award in a ceremony at the North County Regional Education Center. The WorkAbility 1 program gives San Marcos Unified School District (SMUSD) special education students the opportunity to gain work experience and valuable skills. The statewide program began in 1981 and provides skills training, employment placement, independent living training, and introductions to local employers. SMUSD WorkAbility 1 program coordinator Karen Thompson

nominated Dallas for the award. She praised his years of support for students with disabilities, as well as his advocacy as a member of the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce. “Dallas promotes and fosters a culture of full inclusion,” Karen explained. “Our students are considered part of the hotel staff team and take great pride in their contribution to the smooth running of the hotel.” According to Dallas, the program is mutually beneficial, and working with the students is an empowering, morale-building experience for his staff as well. “The respect and camaraderie shown to our students by Dallas, his staff, and the hotel guests increases their self-esteem and enhances their dignity on a daily basis,” Karen said. Approximately 200 guests attended, including parents, teachers, administrators, government representatives, and school district superintendents and directors of special education. Dallas also received a framed resolution from State Senator Joel Anderson’s office. 

Honorary Degrees at CSUSM photos provided by CSUSM

California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) granted three honorary degrees during last month’s commencement ceremonies. Esther and Jan Stearns received a Doctor of Humane Letters for their support of ACE Scholars Services. The program provides personalized service for former foster youth attending CSUSM, resulting in an 86% persistence rate – the number of students returning to college for a second year – compared to the national average of 50%. Molecular biologist Lydia Villa-Komaroff received a Doctor of Science for her contributions to medical science. In addition to her milestone research in inducing insulin production in bacteria, she was a founding member of the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science and serves as a role model for STEM students of all backgrounds. Country artist Jimmy Wayne uses his music and platform to highlight his own experience as a foster youth. His activism has influenced bills in California, North Carolina, and Tennessee to extend foster services to age 21. He was awarded a Doctor of Fine Arts.

San Elijo Elementary Recognized The California Distinguished Schools Program has returned after a three-year break, replacing the California Gold Ribbon Schools Program. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson recently made the announcement that 287 schools were being honored under this program. 92078’s San Elijo Elementary has been named 2018 California Distinguished Schools. According to the California Department of Education, 287 elementary schools across the state, and 33 elementary schools in San Diego County, are being honored under the Distinguished Schools Program this year. “These schools implement outstanding educational programs and practices that help California students realize their potential, and put them on the path to achieve their dreams,” said Torlakson in a news release. San Elijo Elementary opened in August 2006, and currently serves over 1,000 students in San Elijo Hills. To learn more visit www.cde.ca.gov.

Giving Back to Foster Kids San Marcos nonprofit Casa de Amparo’s Meet the Chefs event once again brought the community together for an afternoon of delicious food and giving back. The 22nd annual event was held at the Hilton San Diego Del Mar, and all proceeds directly benefit Casa de Amparo’s mission to treat and prevent child abuse and neglect. The organization was founded in 1978 by a group of local women, and today it serves over 1,000 children and over 50 families every year, with locations in San Marcos and Oceanside. The event saw tremendous support from the community, including six members of GFWC Contemporary Women of North County, who assisted with the silent auction. Learn more about upcoming events at www.casadeamparo.org.

Celebrating Soroptimists photo by Karen Thompson

The women of Soroptimist International of Vista and North County Inland (SIVNCI) recently hosted their annual awards gala, titled Live Your Dream: Education and Training Awards for Women. Three single mothers who are all attending college locally were awarded $5,000 each to help them continue their education. Additionally, each was given a laptop and printer. All are balancing school while working to support their families. Sheryl Roush, CEO for Sparkle Presentations, Inc., author, and coach, was the featured speaker for the night. SIVNCI also recently held their annual Salad Luncheon fundraiser at Grace Presbyterian Church. The event included the salad lunch prepared by Club members and local restaurants and served up by volunteers from the community. The luncheon also had raffles for a gift basket and money hat. “This is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and a great community event,” said Soroptimist Assly Sayyar, who was cochair of the event this year. The luncheon fundraiser raised over $5,000 for the club’s Service Fund, which will go towards next year’s grants. SIVNCI encompasses members from Escondido, Fallbrook, San Marcos, and Vista. For more information visit www.soroptimistvista.org.

Pillars of Hope Grand Slam photo by Bill Keane Photography

The Mitchell Thorp Foundation and San Diego Aviators World Team Tennis will host the Pillars of Hope Grand Slam on Saturday, July 28. The event includes dinner, tennis play by top-ranked pro players, and auctions to benefit the foundation, as well as a special children’s program. While parents enjoy the entertainment and dinner, the Grand Slam Kids Night lets them skip the babysitter so the kids can participate in dinner and games before returning to their parents to watch the tennis match. Kids Night check-in is at 3 p.m., and the dinner program begins at 3:30 p.m. The evening will also announce the winners of this year’s Pillar of Hope Award, which recognizes doctors, educators, therapists, and institutions who go above and beyond in the medical community. The Mitchell Thorp Foundation supports families of children with life-threatening illnesses or disorders, with four programs: Medical and Home Assistance, Healing and Rehabilitation, Conversion Mobility Van Program, and Youth Leadership Council. Jonsson “OB is the best! This was our first time selling a home, and he provided the right balance of education and direction to our family. He’s responsive, knows the market, and made the sale of our condo simple and relatively easy. Thank you to OB and the Juncal Real Estate Team!” – Cristina M. “I have dealt with dozens of agents and brokers over the years, and there is no comparison to OB. I felt at times that he was even more careful with our investment than we were. He is extremely knowledgeable about every aspect of real estate that we were required to address, and I would trust him completely (from start to finish) to find a home for one of my children or a very good friend. We have been in this house for a few months, and locals from the area have commented on what a great value and beautiful property this is. I believe that whoever has OB on their side, whether it be an experienced or first-time buyer, is in great hands.” – Anne F.

Their clients are their #1 priority, and they are recognized as Windermere’s top mother/daughter team. It’s a competitive market around here, and K and Jamie get it. So, first off they want you to know that yes, they do offer flexible commissions. Second, they strongly urge you to consider who you hire to represent you in your real estate sale or home-buying purchase, because not all Realtors are created equally. It can make a huge difference! Testimonial: “K and Jamie were fantastic. Why? Simple – they listened to us and discerned what was most important to us. In addition, selling a house can be pretty stressful. K and Jamie relieved me of all the stress of the selling process because they were very professional, knowledgeable, and responsive. I usually sent emails in the evening, often fairly late, and was often surprised to get immediate responses. Finally, this wasn’t my first rodeo; it was my fifth and my best experience so far. If I ever need a Realtor in the Poway area again, I’ll only need to make one call: to K and Jamie.” – Veme Whidden, Green Valley, Poway seller

The foundation of any real estate relationship is trust, and Jessica believes that trust begins with the very first phone call. It’s about honesty, not salesmanship. FAC E S I N T H E C R OW D

SAN MARCOS RESIDENT RICK DRYER TO COMPLETE HIS 100TH SAN JACINTO SUMMIT by KELLEY GUSICH

“I

n 1883, John Muir summited Mt. San Jacinto (San J) and, on reflecting at the peak (10,834 feet), he uttered these prophetic words, ‘There is no more sublime view in the whole world.’ One hundred years later (1983) Gary Brown and I made our first of numerous crests of Mt. San Jacinto. From that first peak experience, we were in adoration of the superabundant magnificence of the San Jacinto wilderness.” Rick Dryer, who began hiking when he was a Scout leader for his two sons, will punctuate this experience on June 16 by making his 100th summit! Rick has completed these 12- to 17-mile hikes during all four seasons, mostly embarking from Idyllwild. “When you total the miles hiked just on SJ,” Rick said, “I’ve hiked 1,600 miles, and my elevation gain over those 100 hikes would be 453,500 vertical feet (85,899 vertical miles)!” For 35 years, Rick taught school and was active as a marathon runner and tennis player, but since he’s started hiking he’s trekked across the globe – from Stone Forest in China to the Canadian Rockies to the 18,200-foot summit of the Kala Patar peak in the Himalayas. Last fall he completed the Camino De Santiago, a 585-mile trek from France to Santiago, Spain by way of the Pyrenees. “I have hiked Mt. Gorgonio 25 times and Mt. San Antonio-Baldy 10 times in preparation for hiking Mt. Whitney (14,508 feet) nine times, plus White Mountain and Mt. Shasta.” During 19 years of Rick’s teaching career, he served on the board of the San Diego Education Fund, raising money for scholarships for young people who are the first in their family to attend college. As a grateful SDSU graduate from 50 years ago, he’s repurposed the June 16 hike as a fundraiser for the education department. There will be 26 to 30 hikers joining, including Bill Burke – the oldest American to summit Mt. Everest, from both Nepal and Tibet. Barbara “Bobbie” Wright will also be there on her 50th San Jacinto hike. “She and I have completed 398 hikes together, as of this writing,” Rick smiled. “I count every day as lost that I did not do something physically demanding... and these activities will be done for as long as I live, but I don’t think I’ll accomplish another 100 summits of Mt. San Jacinto – the torch (literally) will be passed on to Barbara Wright.” Hike on, Rick!  20 • 92078MAGAZINE.COM • June | July 2018

or a school as ambitious as San Marcos High (SMHS), the sky really is the limit. The SMHS rocketry team, Houston’s Problem, has worked tirelessly through second semester to build a rocket that could launch high enough to meet national competition requirements. This year, the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) organization required rockets to reach a height of 800 feet and safely bring down two raw eggs without cracking them. Although weather conditions made it hard for the team to do their final launch on Easter weekend, they persisted and qualified for the national competition. The final TARC launching took place on May 12, with Houston’s Problem tying with Explorer Post 1010 from Maryland for 50th place. For the past two years, the school finished in eighth place, which earned them $12,000 in scholarship money. This year, out of approximately 800 teams, 50th place is still a large accomplishment for the school. The team of four and their coach were certainly not disappointed by their attempt. Erin Fox, the team’s captain, feels “blown away that we even made it to nationals,

and placing in the top 50 in the nation far surpassed any expectation that I had for this year.” Joey Mack, Gabrielle Hart, and Jason Stimeling make up the rest of the team and are equally proud. Fox, on behalf of her team, expressed how the team believes, “We ended up achieving much more than we thought we would.” James Boehmler is the TARC advisor for SMHS and has been for the past 10 years. Rocketry can be unpredictable and very competitive, and every year, Boehmler finds himself telling his pupils, “It takes a lot of skill and a little bit of luck to qualify for nationals, but it takes a little bit of skill and a lot of luck to win.” With this in mind, the team plans on continuing into next year using these new experiences as a foundation for their future efforts. 

Summer Fun Returns at the San Diego County Fair by LAINEY KRAL photos ©agezinder/123RF.COM

BEAT THE HEAT!

PLAN FOR PARKING!

Check the weather ahead of time and dress in comfortable clothes for walking. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats are a good idea for sunny days, and bring a water bottle if you're staying all day.

Onsite parking is available, as well as free offsite parking with shuttle service to the fair. Due to crowds and traffic, getting there can be hectic – be sure to leave with plenty of time to get to any special events you’re looking forward to.

ne of San Diego's most beloved traditions has returned. The San Diego County Fair – whose theme this year is How Sweet It Is! – was first established in 1880 and arrived at its current home, the Del Mar Fairgrounds, in 1936. The fair has undergone a number of name changes over the past 138 years, and though the name was changed back to the original San Diego County Fair in 2002, many locals still know it as the Del Mar Fair. The fair offers a wide range of attractions and events, from famously adventurous fair food to dizzying carnival rides. Community members of all ages have the opportunity to showcase their talents as well, with competitions and exhibitions for collections, crafts, wine and beer, fine art, fashion, floral design, and of course, livestock of all shapes and sizes. Summer concerts are another popular draw, and this year includes a variety of artists from Little Big Town to Kansas and more. The fair will run June 1 through July 4, and is closed Mondays and Tuesdays in June. Hours vary from day to day, so check times and find out about more special events at www.sdfair.com. 
