It’s Boat Time

’ve been champing at the bit to take the family out to San Vicente Reservoir. It reopened to the public this past fall after being closed since 2008 for the San Vicente Dam Raise Project, which created new emergency water storage for the region by raising the height of the dam. Our boat had been in storage since last summer. Needless to say, it needed a little cleaning to get ready for the water. Although I was alone with this thought, I felt cleaning the boat would be the perfect Saturday family project. After a long day using plenty of elbow grease – scrubbing, bribing, rinsing, twisting arms, and scrubbing some more – the boat was ready to go. Batteries charged. Oil checked twice (I learned my lesson the hard way on this, but that story is for another day). The expanded San Vicente Reservoir lived up to all the chatter. I think the new marina and boat launch is now the best in SoCal. The first boat ride of the season went well. Kids were nothing but smiles. My son took his turn at the helm and practiced his driving skills. My daughter giggled each time we encountered a wave. The engine sounded great, and the cool wind on our faces felt even better. I want to say the outing went without a hiccup, but we had a minor mechanical issue at the end of the day once we got the boat back on the trailer. My outdrive wouldn’t trim up into the travel position. Several people offered assistance. I politely declined, letting them know that I was contemplating leaving the boat behind and having someone deal with it the next morning. One gentleman, who had been out fishing with his buddies all day, wouldn’t take no for an answer. He jumped into my boat and handed me his business card (which showed he owned a boat repair service). Within minutes, he had his tool pouch out and Derrick Breaux my boat outdrive raised back into the proper towing position. Publisher When I thanked Dave of DCM Marine, he just said, “Hey man, that’s what boat people do. We take care of each other.” I couldn’t help but wonder how much better the world would be if everyone had a boating mentality and enthusiastically looked out for one another. Special thanks to Dave Perez of DCM Marine. If you need a knowledgeable boat guy for new and used parts, service, or repair, Dave’s your man. He can be reached at 619-913-0420. resident of the Discovery Hills community, Student Star Nadia Messerschmidt has always called San Marcos home. “I love it here because of the people,” she acknowledged. “Nearly everyone I talk to is always so friendly and helpful.” Nadia feels the same way about San Marcos High School, where she is finishing her freshman year. “Honestly, I like almost everything

about it,” she said. “I love all my friends, and my teachers are great, but I particularly enjoy the atmosphere.” Her favorite subjects are English and biology. She explained that in biology she learns “how the world works and why certain things do what they do.” While in English class, “we learn about what people normally don’t talk about and are faced with situations most people my age aren’t.”

Since the fourth grade, music has been an important part of Nadia’s life. Last year, she was a member of the All Southern Honor Band, part of the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA). This past January, she attended the Jazz Educators Network conference in New Orleans with MiraCosta College’s Jazz Orchestra. As a musician, she has also had the opportunity to give back to the community, playing in a homeless shelter and for veterans as part of her jazz band. Nadia’s other hobbies are also creative and artistic; she enjoys drawing and writing. Her favorite subjects to draw and paint are animals and people. She enjoys trying to capture their emotions in art. A strong reader, she admitted that writing is a bigger challenge. “That doesn’t stop me from doing it though,” Nadia said. “I always come up with ideas for books and start to write them but I come up with a new idea before I can finish.” After high school, Nadia plans to attend college. She hopes to study science and minor in music and is even considering going on to graduate school. The inspiration for this hard-working young woman is her father. “He works really hard every day just so I can go to school and be a normal teenager,” Nadia recognized. “I want to make him proud.” 

“I love all my friends and my teachers are great but I particularly enjoy the atmosphere.”

he Towsleys, who have lived in Discovery Hills for four years, consist of Heather and her 11-year-old son Tryston, a fifth grader at Double Peak School. With a large repertoire of professional accomplishments and volunteering responsibilities, Heather is an excellent role model for her boy, who she described as, “kind, compassionate, and enthusiastic.” Heather could also be describing herself. Always giving of her time, Heather is one of seven community services commissioners for San Marcos, overseeing a budget of 3.4 million that maintains the city’s senior services, youth sports, recreational facilities, parks, trails, and the public equestrian facility. Heather also raises money for the city’s annual fireworks presentation, which she deemed, “one of the best shows in North County!” In addition, Heather is the vice president for her HOA Board, she helps out at Double Peak’s Innovation Lab, and she assembles auction

Heather also has a day job working for Good Source Solutions, a company that diverts excess food items from manufacturers to specialty chefs around the country. As an award-winning sales and marketing professional, Heather earned the Public Relations Society of America Bernays Award, the International Association of Business Communicators Gold Quill Award, and the Silver Telly Award. An accomplished competitive figure skater, Heather wrote a children’s book, It’s Okay to Fall, about getting up after falling when ice skating. Even with all of these accolades, Heather professed, “I’m most proud of raising a child!” Tryston adores field and arena soccer, flag football, video games, and army men. At school, he keeps busy with math club, clarinet classes, and the track team. Tryston also loves making videos for his YouTube channel, and caring for Spike, his pet Chinese water dragon. He volunteers at the senior center, where he has performed on his recorder for guests as they enjoy lunch. Heather maintained, “Tryston does everything fast and he aims to please, and I love watching him play sports!” When she isn’t cheering on her son, working, or volunteering, Heather enjoys gardening, cooking, and playing tennis. The Towsleys also love hanging out at the community pool, and hiking along the paths to Discovery Lake. Extolling the virtues of her neighborhood, Heather stated, “Discovery Hills is beautiful, safe, and tranquil. I’m so grateful.” 

Living the Volunteer Spirit CWONC MEMBERS SERVE AROUND THE COUNTY

G

eneral Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) Contemporary Women of North County (CWONC) members are living up to their mission of enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service. The women have been active in participating in various events throughout San Diego County, such as Casa de Amparo’s 21st Annual Meet the Chefs of Del Mar event in late April. Top Del Mar chefs prepared and shared their signature dishes while guests sipped wine and bid on silent auction items. Proceeds from the event support Casa de Amparo’s programs

and services for abused, neglected, and at-risk children and families. CWONC members worked the silent auction area, helping to set up, maintain tables and bid sheets, and assisting winning guests in connecting with their prizes. Earlier in April, GFWC Contemporary Women supported Camp Pendleton’s annual “Eggstravaganza” with a cookie decorating table for children of the group’s adopted squadron, Marine Squadron 369. CWONC members have been volunteering at the San Diego County Fair since 1998.

This year the women served as stewards for the beer tasting contest at a pre-fair event. Prior to the fair opening on June 2, they will also wash wine glasses for wine judging and register entries for the “Best of K-6 Schools” exhibit. Finally, as an organization dedicated to community improvement, preparing and serving lunch for families at Ronald McDonald House San Diego has become a favorite and frequent volunteer project for members of GFWC Contemporary Women. Some notable odd items found in the cleanup included a $90 check, an ATM machine shell, and a raw chicken package. COMMUNITY STUFF

SMHS Honored as Gold Ribbon School San Marcos High School (SMHS) was one of 21 schools in San Diego County and 275 middle and high schools throughout the state to be named a 2017 California Gold Ribbon School. The Gold Ribbon Awards, which are temporarily replacing the California Distinguished Schools Program, recognize schools that have made gains in implementing the academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education, and also serve as examples of excellent teaching, learning, collaborating, and successful school climate efforts. “These terrific schools are leading the way in embracing our new rigorous academic standards and showing others how to help students succeed on their way to 21st century careers and college,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson. “I look forward to traveling the state to honor these schools and to help share the programs, methods, and techniques that are working.”

Richmar Park Grand Opening The City of San Marcos recently hosted a grand opening community celebration for the new Richmar Park. The free event featured a dedication ribbon cutting, live music by Bobby Sanchez Combo, lawn games hosted by the San Marcos Boys and Girls Club, arts and crafts hosted by the city’s youth programs, and light refreshments provided by The Original Mr. Taco. The celebration was originally scheduled for February, but was postponed due to weather. The 1.8-acre park, funded by a California housing-related park grant and federal Community Development Block Grant funds, features a children’s play area, picnic and social spaces, walking paths, a performance area, and a central shaded gazebo. Richmar Park adds to San Marcos’ existing 34 parks, bringing the total developed parkland space to 275 acres, providing safe recreational opportunities to the city’s residents. Smoke-Free Cal State San Marcos photo courtesy of CSUSM

California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) recently received a grant from the American Cancer Society and CVS Health Foundation, making possible a new smoke- and tobacco-free campus initiative, effective this fall. “Becoming a smoke- and tobacco-free campus protects and promotes the health and well-being of our campus community,” said Dr. Kimberly Pulvers, a CSUSM associate professor of psychology who has researched addiction and tobacco use extensively. “The smoke- and tobacco-free campus initiative supports the mission and values of our university, prepares our students to enter workforces which are increasingly smoke- and tobacco-free, and supports environmental sustainability and litter reduction.” The entire University of California system, five California State Universities, and all San Diego County public colleges and universities have already prohibited tobacco use on campus. There is also a pending CSU Chancellor’s Office system-wide executive order for all CSU campuses to become 100 percent smoke- and tobacco-free by September 2017. Mission Federal ArtWalk photo by Paul Nestor

92078’s Paul Counts was among more than 350 local, national, and international artists participating in the 33rd Annual Mission Federal ArtWalk in Little Italy this April. The free weekend-long event attracts thousands of visitors each year to enjoy art in every medium, along with live music and dance performances, interactive art activities, street food, and family friendly craft projects at KidsWalk. This year’s theme was “Vivid Expression.” Paul Counts is a local glass artist who earned a B.A. and M.A. in glass and ceramics from Cal State Fullerton. He’s worked in studios throughout California, as well as teaching glass arts. “Mission Federal ArtWalk is for everyone – serious collectors, first-time art buyers, families, and visitors to San Diego,” said Mission Federal ArtWalk Director Sandi Cottrell. “Each year, one of our goals is to ensure attendees feel like they can be a part of the art. We encourage attendees to express themselves throughout the weekend and find their inner artist, which exists in all of us.” For more information go to www.artwalksandiego.org.

Plant, Grow, and Eat at the San Diego County Fair The San Diego County Fair’s Plant*Grow*Eat program teaches elementary school students about the connection between agriculture and nutrition. After planting their seeds, watering, weeding their plants, and watching their garden grow, even kindergartners now understand where their food comes from. After growing their plants, students are bussed to the fair to see how their entries fared during judging. Asked to reveal the secret of their first-place lettuce medley, 2016 winners Arturo and Emily confided, “Extra water. When our plants looked dry, we gave them a little more.” Last year, the Don Diego Scholarship Foundation, thanks to the generosity of donors, sponsored 73 buses (typically, $300 per bus) that enabled students from low-income schools to participate in Plant*Grow*Eat. Bus sponsors receive publicity, bus signage, and an opportunity to meet and accompany the sponsored students to the judging area. Sponsors can also serve as a judge. The Foundation is currently looking for additional sponsors for Plant*Grow*Eat in order to keep this program flourishing for future generations. Surfing Champions

SAN MARCOS HIGH SCHOOL CRUSHES THE STATE COMPETITION

T

he competitive surf program at San Marcos High School excelled in the Scholastic Surf Series (SSS) State Competition at Oceanside Harbor in late April. The men’s longboard and women’s shortboard teams made it into the finals, the men’s shortboard team repeated as state champions, and the San Marcos team was crowned overall team state champions. Orange County’s San Juan Hills High School had previously won the state title for the past four consecutive years. “Here at San Marcos High we have a group of very dedicated surfers who put in lots of hours in the water to improve their surfing, and it shows in the contest results,” said Coach Randy Walton. “In addition to being a great group of kids, these are student-athletes of the highest caliber who are deeply committed to the sport of surfing.” Better yet, this year’s championship team had just one senior competitor so, according to Coach Walton, next year’s season is bound to be another success.

SSS was started in 2010 as a program of the Western Surfing Association (WSA), providing a professionally managed and operated platform for middle and high school surf teams from San Diego to Santa Barbara. SSS competition areas are divided into three sections – San Diego, Orange County, and LA to Santa Barbara. School competitions are divided into individual contest divisions; San Diego high school teams compete in divisions one through four, with middle schools in their own division. Each section consists of five events culminating with the State Championship contest. San Marcos competed against nine other Southern California high schools in the state competition: Aliso Niguel, Canyon Crest Academy, Capistrano Valley, Cathedral Catholic, MUSE, Oak Park, San Juan Hills, University City, and Woodrow Wilson. AN AFTERNOON

Discover Seaport Village + The Headquarters This Spring by SAMANTHA EDWARDS

I

f your idea of a perfect afternoon involves a lazy stroll along cobblestone pathways winding in and out of view of the Big Bay, ice cream cone in hand, while drenched in the warm Southern California sunshine, there’s a good chance we know where your head is at: Seaport Village. This 14-acre waterfront stretch is home to over 45 diverse shops, 17 eateries, and regular entertainment such as face painters, balloon artists, free outdoor concerts on Sundays, and an old-fashioned carousel – open 365 days a year. Seaport is also host to several fun events throughout the year, like the Busker Festival in the spring and San Diego Symphony’s Bayside Summer Nights concert series in the warmer months. Though sometimes characterized as a tourist destination, San Diego’s Seaport Village is ideal for visitors and locals alike. And with the recent restoration of the adjoining Old Police Headquarters (now simply called “The Headquarters”), Seaport is the perfect blend of old and new. With restaurants, specialty boutiques, and even a fully restored eight-cell jail block surrounding a central plaza, The Headquarters gives new life to what was once the central location for all police operations from 1939 to the late '80s. The Headquarters hosts a number of events throughout the year as well, such as paired food and drink tastings, pizza making classes, Salsa Under the Stars dance night, and the CincoTeca Dos fiesta. Last year the Port of San Diego launched a major redevelopment effort for Seaport Village, a move that remains controversial, in order to revitalize the area and bring in more revenue. Proposed plans include turning Seaport into a mixed-use commercial development, retaining fishing facilities, adding a hotel, and creating a better connection to the heart of downtown San Diego. The Headquarters space would not be affected. The project has not yet been approved, however, and construction would not likely begin for at least a few more years, so you still have plenty of time to get down there and experience a beautiful day at Seaport Village! 

Easy Steps

to Better Women’s Health

May 14-20, 2017 marks National Women’s Health Week. In honor of women everywhere, we offer the following five steps to improve your overall health and quality of life. STEP ONE: Schedule an annual health and wellness appointment with your primary care doctor. This all-important visit is the ideal time to review your health status with your doctor and make adjustments in your lifestyle, medications, etc. Plus, your doctor will conduct preventive screenings for early detection of illnesses when they are a lot easier (and less expensive) to treat. STEP TWO: Make movement a part of your daily routine. Whether it’s gardening, walking the dog or hitting the gym, regular, physical activity has immense health benefits. These include lower risk of common diseases, like heart disease (the #1 killer of American women), stroke, and high blood pressure; improved sleep and mental outlook; and a healthier weight.

STEP THREE: Adjust your eating habits. A healthy diet is just as important as regular physical activity when it comes to improving your health. Consume more fruits and vegetables, which are packed with vitamins, minerals and fiber. Eat proteins that are lower in fat, such as lean meats, and low-fat or fat-free dairy products. Increase your intake of whole grains and cut down on sugar and salt. STEP FOUR: Learn to manage stress. Ongoing stress can take a toll on your mental and physical health. While you can’t avoid it entirely, you can certainly learn to manage it. Tried and true stress-lowering techniques include yoga, regular exercise, and time management. Seek help from a qualified mental health professional if you feel you can’t cope, are overwhelmed, have suicidal thoughts, or are using drugs or alcohol. STEP FIVE: Avoid unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking, not wearing a seatbelt or bicycle helmet, and texting while driving. Limit alcohol intake to one drink per day.

New at the Club

BGCSM FURTHER SUPPORTS YOUTH IN THE COMMUNITY

T

here are some exciting things happening at the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos (BGCSM). The new Best Buy Teen Tech Center is nearly completed and will have its grand opening on Monday, May 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. The Tech Center will be filled with state-of-the-art equipment to provide club members with the opportunity to create and explore technology through hands-on, project-based learning. The Center will also be part of the Clubhouse Network, allowing teens to connect and collaborate with other teens from all over the world. Guests at the grand opening will be able to tour the new facility, explore work stations, and learn more about what the Tech Center has to offer. BGCSM also recently kicked off its annual staff giving campaign, #GiveLikeABoss, with a goal of raising $10,000 to help support club programs. In an effort to provide a diverse experience that helps young people ages 6 to 18 develop self-esteem and reach their full potential,

club programs focus on five core areas: character and leadership development; the arts; education and career development; health and life skills; and sports, fitness, and recreation. BGCSM serves over 3,000 kids and teens, giving them a safe environment where they can have fun and be themselves, adult role models who respect and listen to them, and interesting, constructive educational and recreational activities. For more information or to donate to the #GiveLikeABoss campaign go to www.boysgirlsclubsm.org. 
