It’s Boat Time

I

’ve been champing at the bit to take the family out to San Vicente Reservoir. It reopened to the public this past fall after being closed since 2008 for the San Vicente Dam Raise Project, which created new emergency water storage for the region by raising the height of the dam. Our boat had been in storage since last summer. Needless to say, it needed a little cleaning to get ready for the water. Although I was alone with this thought, I felt cleaning the boat would be the perfect Saturday family project. After a long day using plenty of elbow grease – scrubbing, bribing, rinsing, twisting arms, and scrubbing some more – the boat was ready to go. Batteries charged. Oil checked twice (I learned my lesson the hard way on this, but that story is for another day). The expanded San Vicente Reservoir lived up to all the chatter. I think the new marina and boat launch is now the best in SoCal. The first boat ride of the season went well. Kids were nothing but smiles. My son took his turn at the helm and practiced his driving skills. My daughter giggled each time we encountered a wave. The engine sounded great, and the cool wind on our faces felt even better. I want to say the outing went without a hiccup, but we had a minor mechanical issue at the end of the day once we got the boat back on the trailer. My outdrive wouldn’t trim up into the travel position. Several people offered assistance. I politely declined, letting them know that I was contemplating leaving the boat behind and having someone deal with it the next morning. One gentleman, who had been out fishing with his buddies all day, wouldn’t take no for an answer. He jumped into my boat and handed me his business card (which showed he owned a boat repair service). Within minutes, he had his tool pouch out and Derrick Breaux my boat outdrive raised back into the proper towing position. Publisher When I thanked Dave of DCM Marine, he just said, “Hey man, that’s what boat people do. We take care of each other.” I couldn’t help but wonder how much better the world would be if everyone had a boating mentality and enthusiastically looked out for one another. Special thanks to Dave Perez of DCM Marine. If you need a knowledgeable boat guy for new and used parts, service, or repair, Dave’s your man. He can be reached at 619-913-0420. bout 15 years ago, Kylie Jenkins couldn’t find the perfect stationery when planning her son’s first birthday party, so she made the product herself. Soon after, she began receiving orders from her family and friends, and now she maintains her own online stationery website. Then after her daughter was born in 2011, Kylie morphed all of her party planning interests, including her ideas for themed events, recipes, and décor, into her own blog, Made by a Princess Parties. She recalled, “For a long time only my family and friends read my blog, but then I started getting comments from people I didn’t know, which was so exciting!” Discussing the motivations behind

her blog posts, Kylie admitted, “A lot of my content is driven by my kids’ interests, or it can be driven by movies coming up, or what is trending.” If you aren’t the Martha Stewart type, you’ll be happy to hear that Kylie keeps her DIY lessons as simple as possible while remaining very budget conscious. Kylie maintained, “Most of my recipes are really easy and don’t require a high level of cooking experience, and many of my DIYs and tutorials use items from the dollar store. If my readers took just one thing from a post and felt they could make it, bake it, or create it, I would be so happy!” Various brands began approaching Kylie about doing product reviews, and that

has parlayed into Kylie doing party stylings for clients. This means she does décor setups and/or recipes using client products, photographs it all, and does write-ups for the clients’ websites. She shared, “I do party stylings for Birthday in a Box, Just Candy, and WH Candy. I am also a brand ambassador for World Market, Wayfair, Torani, and Oriental trading Co., and I am on the Sizzix Design team.” Offering advice to others interested in getting into the blogging realm, Kylie suggested, “Have a plan from the start, do your research on what the market wants, and do something that will make you stand out. It does not happen overnight, but eventually it will pay off!” 

Crusade Against Cancer VISTA COMMUNITY CLINIC RECEIVES AVON GRANT

T

he Vista Community Clinic (VCC) was recently awarded a $50,000 one-year grant from the Avon Breast Health Outreach Program (BHOP) in order to increase awareness of the life-saving benefits of early detection of breast cancer, and to provide services to women in need. BHOP selected VCC as one of 56 nationwide grant recipients in the 2017 grant cycle. The organizations were chosen based on their ability to effectively reach women – particularly minority, low-income, and elderly women – who are often medically underserved. The Breast Health Program at VCC provides breast health education, screenings, patient navigation, and support services to thousands of women in North County San Diego. “We are proud that the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade shares our mission and has chosen to support our program,” said VCC Chief Executive Officer Fernando Sañudo. “These funds will enable us to

10 • 92081 MAGAZINE.COM • April | May 2017

eliminate barriers to screening and treatment that many of these women face.” Since 1993, the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade has awarded more than 1,800 grants to breast health programs across the United States to support breast cancer research and access to care. Beneficiaries range from leading cancer centers to community-based, grassroots breast health programs such as VCC. For more information visit www.avonbhop.org. VCC’s Breast Health Program has received funding from the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade for the past 17 years. Since its inception, the program has reached more than 64,000 women with information about the importance of early detection of breast cancer and has referred over 25,000 women for mammograms and clinical breast exams. Reflections of Life David Lozeau's Art Explores How Different Cultures Deal With Remembrance by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos by Alicia Jeanne Photography

A

ccording to David Lozeau, he always drew as a child, in textbooks, on desks, on his homework – just about everywhere he shouldn’t. “In high school, I discovered better outlets for my creativity and filled my curriculum with art and design classes,” related David. Currently, David’s studio is buzzing with projects in the works with Disney, LucasArts, and el Jimador Tequila. He is also excited to return to Mission Federal ArtWalk for the fifth time. There, he will display current works and be live painting a new piece. The event takes place on April 29 and 30 in Little Italy. David began his creative journey using traditional media and an abstract style. He then moved to more figurative work in acrylics, which led to his current approach

to art. “I create my background in acrylics, then my under painting in gouache, and finally my line work in enamel. Over the last seven years, this unlikely mix of mediums has been my go-to because it enhances my graphic novel style, provides a limitless color palette, and dries very quickly, which enables me to live paint while on the road,” revealed David. David grew up in New Hampshire, moved to California 13 years ago, and settled down in Vista seven years ago. “Vista had everything I was looking for in a community and perfect weather to boot! What amazes me is seeing all of the positive changes that have taken place in such a short time – from the Main Street revitalization to the ever-expanding craft beer scene. It’s been really great to see Vista grow into a destination city,” stated David. Since moving to California, David’s core artistic inspiration is Día de los Muertos. According to him, his art tries to capture the very essence of a person in a single moment in time, in skeleton form. “My paintings are like visual altars, which are an important part of the holiday. My life revolves around my art, and my art reflects my take on life. I’ve celebrated the Day of the Dead in Mexico, explored the catacombs of France and Italy, and witnessed Semana Santa in Spain. I strive to understand how different cultures deal with death and remembrance,” explained David. When he is not painting, David is an avid animal rights advocate. “I am very active with the Vista-based organization Animal Synergy, which saves elderly and terminally ill dogs and gives them love, safety, and medical care,” said David. 

RADY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL AUXILIARY RECEIVES LEADERSHIP AWARD

T

he Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary recently received the prestigious Thomas F. Carter Leadership Award, which recognizes extraordinary volunteer leaders and philanthropists that are dedicated to the patients and families at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego. The award was bestowed to the Rady family in 2015 and originally given to Thomas Carter himself in 2000 for his exceptional leadership. “Rady Children’s Auxiliary is proud and honored to receive the Thomas Carter Award,” said Auxiliary President Mary Reynolds. “The Auxiliary’s mission is to advocate for, educate about, and fundraise for Rady Children’s Hospital. We have fulfilled that mission for 64 years, raising $70 million and touching every corner of the hospital. To be recognized for that achievement is extremely gratifying.” The Auxiliary was established in 1953 as a way to promote

the welfare of Rady Children’s Hospital. The group has not strayed from its original statement of purpose since then. The organization now consists of 23 units that span throughout San Diego and Riverside counties, including the North County unit. In addition to supporting Rady Children’s programs and services, the Auxiliary has pledged to raise $2.5 million to establish the Auxiliary Endowment for Neuroscience at the Rady Children’s Institute for Genomic Medicine. The endowment will help improve patient care by providing clinical genetics, DNA sequencing, bioinformatics, clinical trials, and cutting-edge research for children with neurological diseases and disorders. For more information or to contribute to the endowment fund visit www.radyfoundation.org/auxiliary. ¢

Live Your Dreams

LOCAL WOMEN HONORED WITH SPECIAL SOROPTIMIST AWARD

S

ix local women were recently honored at Soroptimist International of Vista and North County Inland’s annual Soroptimist Women’s Award Gala at Shadowridge Golf Club in Vista. Approximately 80 guests, including Vista Mayor Judy Ritter, attended the Hollywood-themed luncheon, which included a ballroom dance demonstration, a raffle, and other activities. The featured event was the presentation of the club’s Live Your Dream Award to three local single mothers who continue to overcome adversities in their lives. “For every negative person in my life who has told me I cannot make it, to quit school, and who has pushed me down, I want to prove them wrong,” one award recipient said. Another recipient, Alisha Donaldson, shared, “My goals in life are to show those who have gone through hardships and struggles, that although times can be very hard, that you can still do anything you set your mind to.” Each of the three awardees received a $5,000 check 14 • 92081 MAGAZINE.COM • April | May 2017

and award certificate as well as a proclamation from Mayor Ritter. The club’s foundation, a separate entity that was established in 1983, also awarded $5,000 each to graduate nursing students Nicole Galicia and Michelle Glathe, and a $1,500 grant to Rachelle Schull for her graduate work in special education. The Live Your Dream Award provides women who serve as the primary wage earners for their families with the financial resources to offset costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education or additional skills and training. Recipients can use the award for tuition, books, childcare, or any other education-related expense. Since the program’s inception in 1972, approximately $30 million has helped tens of thousands of women achieve their dreams of a better life for themselves and their families. T HE POWER OF P OETRY George Tsoris Shares Poetry With Youth at the Boys & Girls Club of Vista by KELLEY GUSICH | photos by Alicia Jeanne Photography

I

n the late 1930s and early 1940s, a young George Tsoris was a member of the Milwaukee Boys Club (the Boys & Girls Club did not exist yet). During those early years, George developed a passion for poetry. “In high school I compiled a folder of my favorite poems which I still have today,” he said. Now, at 89 years old, he was introduced to the Boys & Girls Club of Vista, and saw a perfect opportunity to share this passion with new youngsters. With a feeling that a poetic sense sharpens children’s ability to observe and comprehend the world around them, he decided as part of his volunteer work he’d help BGCV members memorize and appreciate poems. “For many years I have felt that most children are not very much exposed to poetry,” George reflected. “When I would meet young people I would ask them if they could recite even a line from any poem they had learned. Few could.” His work at BGCV serves to change that. One time, a high school student responded to George’s poem query by quoting the introduction to Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales in the original Old English. Another time, a woman responded to George with, “I think that I shall never see/a poem lovely as a tree.” When George asked her age, she responded, “102.” He feels poetry is important because it helps give people a love of words which in turn helps them to express their own thoughts and feelings. He thinks English poet John Keats said it best: "Poetry is truth seen with passion.” George shared, “It is very satisfying for me to have several of the children make their own poetic discoveries by writing their own poems.” George’s early career was spent in the world of advertising and sales, but he spent the latter part in the real estate appraisal business. In addition to volunteering, he’s a voracious reader and loves to cook. His wife Pauline is an active volunteer as well. She spearheads a program to visit homebound parishioners who cannot attend church, and is also active in supporting several nonprofit charitable organizations. Their son is executive chef of a large ship’s casino, located on the Fox River in Chicago. On his time at the Boys & Girls Club, “It is such a joy to be involved in a volunteer program like this for the community,” George shared, “It helps make old age and retirement a meaningful and wonderful part of my life.” George Tsoris is a meaningful addition to his Vista community. 

Code Media spent an afternoon with the kids at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego (BGCGSD) 4S Ranch Branch as part of the Little Jumps, Big Changes campaign in March. The children first took part in an activity circuit, where they rotated around the gym playing games, jumping rope, and doing other exercises. Afterwards, they were treated to healthy yogurt parfaits. The campaign raises funds to help BGCGSD continue its healthy lifestyle programs across all branches. The club raised over $177,000, surpassing its goal for the year! Learn more at www.sdyouth.org. ¢

AN AFTERNOON

BY THE SEA

Discover Seaport Village + The Headquarters This Spring by SAMANTHA EDWARDS

I

f your idea of a perfect afternoon involves a lazy stroll along cobblestone pathways winding in and out of view of the Big Bay, ice cream cone in hand, while drenched in the warm Southern California sunshine, there’s a good chance we know where your head is at: Seaport Village. This 14-acre waterfront stretch is home to over 45 diverse shops, 17 eateries, and regular entertainment such as face painters, balloon artists, free outdoor concerts on Sundays, and an old-fashioned carousel – open 365 days a year. Seaport is also host to several fun events throughout the year, like the Busker Festival in the spring and San Diego Symphony’s Bayside Summer Nights concert series in the warmer months. Though sometimes characterized as a tourist destination, San Diego’s Seaport Village is ideal for visitors and locals alike. And with the recent restoration of the adjoining Old Police Headquarters (now simply called “The Headquarters”), Seaport is the perfect blend of old and new. With restaurants, specialty boutiques, and even a fully restored eight-cell jail block surrounding a central plaza, The Headquarters gives new life to what was once the central location for all police operations from 1939 to the late '80s. The Headquarters hosts a number of events throughout the year as well, such as paired food and drink tastings, pizza making classes, Salsa Under the Stars dance night, and the CincoTeca Dos fiesta. Last year the Port of San Diego launched a major redevelopment effort for Seaport Village, a move that remains controversial, in order to revitalize the area and bring in more revenue. Proposed plans include turning Seaport into a mixed-use commercial development, retaining fishing facilities, adding a hotel, and creating a better connection to the heart of downtown San Diego. The Headquarters space would not be affected. The project has not yet been approved, however, and construction would not likely begin for at least a few more years, so you still have plenty of time to get down there and experience a beautiful day at Seaport Village! ¢

COMMUNITY STUFF

Local Artist Wins Top Award

Vista resident and artist Charles Henry Rouse won first place in the highly competitive February “Sweet Sediments” Member’s Exhibit at the San Diego Watercolor Society (SDWS). His painting, Barcelona Nights, was given the honor by award-winning artist Keiko Tanabe. “There’s a lot of tension in this painting and it shows fantastic skill,” Keiko said. “The contrast is dramatic and the composition is unique. He takes some risks using the dark center that is balanced with the café scene on the left and the yellow on the right. It shows a wonderful use of darks and lights.” Charles has been painting watercolors for more than 40 years, continually experimenting and perfecting his own techniques. His works have appeared in shows across the nation and have won various awards. More of Charles’ art can be seen at www.charleshenryrouse.com. Learn more about SDWS at www.sdws.org.

This year’s theme is “Vivid Expression.” Vista’s Tom Deitenbeck will showcase his stoneware pottery, Michael Maddy will showcase his glass work, and David Lozeau will showcase his paintings set in custom-built frames. “Mission Federal ArtWalk is for everyone – serious collectors, first-time art buyers, families, and visitors to San Diego,” said Mission Federal ArtWalk Director Sandi Cottrell. “Each year, one of our goals is to ensure attendees feel like they can be a part of the art. We encourage attendees to express themselves throughout the weekend and find their inner artist, which exists in all of us.” For more information go to www.artwalksandiego.org. 20 • 92081 MAGAZINE.COM • April | May 2017

Upcoming CERT Class

Plant, Grow, and Eat at the San Diego County Fair

In an effort to encourage residents to prepare themselves and their community for emergency situations, the Vista Fire Department will begin their next Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program on April 11. The CERT program educates people about disaster preparedness and trains the participants in basic disaster or emergency response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, and disaster medical operations. Using their training, CERT members can tend to themselves, their families, and their neighbors in the event of a disaster. The class is scheduled to meet every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. through May 30 and will be taught by instructors from the Vista Fire Department, who will provide a wide range of background and experience for attendees. To learn more or to enroll online visit www.vistacert.org.

Meet the Leaders photo by Winifred Meiser

Vista Chamber of Commerce recently held its annual Meet the Leaders Dinner at Shadowridge Golf Club. Over 150 local business, civic, and community leaders attended to interact with elected representatives and hear updates on their activities in the community. U.S. Congressman Darrell Issa, California State Senator Patricia Bates, and Board of Equalization Representative Diane Harkey attended and gave presentations at the event. Ron Briseno, Executive Director of the Vista Entertainment Center and Chair of the Vista Chamber of Commerce shared the importance of the annual Meet the Leaders event, “In this political environment, more frequent dialogue between our business and political leaders is needed.” Attendees enjoyed lively discussions during the cocktail hour that enabled them to engage elected officials on topics of interest directly. For more information on the Vista Chamber of Commerce visit www.vistachamber.org.

Grape Gatsby Affaire The Sunrise Vista Kiwanis Foundation will present their 10th Annual Grape Gatsby Affaire on April 29 at the Vista City Hall. What began in 2007 as a casual wine tasting in the backyard of a Sunrise Vista Kiwanian has quickly become one of North County San Diego’s premier wine and food events for a great cause. The 1920s theme is fully embraced every year, with attendees in fun flapper attire and prohibition-period automobiles available for photos. This year’s event is expected to attract more than 200 guests. Proceeds go to benefit Sunrise Vista Kiwanis Foundation’s work in the community with The Eliminate Project, which seeks to end maternal and neonatal tetanus, as well as their programs working with the Boys & Girls Club of Vista, Stand Up for Kids, local high school Key Clubs, Got Your Back, Boy Scouts of America, Bringing Up Grades, Military Family Christmas, and scholarship programs for local students. For more information and to purchase tickets visit www.grapegatsby.com.

The San Diego County Fair’s Plant*Grow*Eat program teaches elementary school students about the connection between agriculture and nutrition. After planting their seeds, watering, weeding their plants, and watching their garden grow, even kindergartners now understand where their food comes from. After growing their plants, students are bussed to the fair to see how their entries fared during judging. Asked to reveal the secret of their first-place lettuce medley, 2016 winners Arturo and Emily confided, “Extra water. When our plants looked dry, we gave them a little more.” Last year, the Don Diego Scholarship Foundation, thanks to the generosity of donors, sponsored 73 buses (typically, $300 per bus) that enabled students from low-income schools to participate in Plant*Grow*Eat. Bus sponsors receive publicity, bus signage, and an opportunity to meet and accompany the sponsored students to the judging area. Sponsors can also serve as a judge. The Foundation is currently looking for additional sponsors for Plant*Grow*Eat in order to keep this program flourishing for future generations. The Oceanside-based medical center is a national leader in alleviating back pain with the Mazor Robotics Renaissance system – a robotic guidance system that accurately and efficiently facilitates a variety of spine surgery treatments. irregularities, osteoporosis, scoliosis, degenerative disc disease, kyphosis, and spondylolisthesis. “Back pain can affect anyone at any age,” said Dr. Payam Moazzaz, spine surgeon and Mazor specialist. “As people age, the body becomes more susceptible to injury, and taking steps to avoid a back injury is important.” While traditional open spine surgery involves exposing the entire spine, the Renaissance system combines a CT-scan and advanced planning software to pinpoint

the exact locations for treatment. It’s a precise roadmap empowering surgeons to provide targeted treatment with smaller incisions, lower complication rates, less radiation, reduced pain, and faster recoveries. As the West Coast training center for the Mazor, Tri-City is one of the top sites for the system nation-wide. MATHNASIUM OF LA COSTA AND NORTH CARLSBAD/OCEANSIDE W

ith school out of session, summer can be tons of fun – but it can also lead to a loss of academic skills called the “summer slide.” Luckily, Mathnasium of La Costa and Mathnasium of North Carlsbad are here to help stop the slide! Owner Karen Lossing explained, “Students can close gaps from the previous year, deepen problem-solving, build up their automaticity in facts and number sense, get a refresher for an upcoming course, or get a sneak peek of skills they will learn in the new year.” The summer programs allow for 16 or 24 sessions on a drop-in basis for grades 2 through 12. An initial assessment helps the dedicated Mathnasium team develop an individualized learning plan for each student, and a beforeand-after comparison report documents growth and achievement by the end of summer. Karen is proud to say the Mathnasium Method has demonstrated great success in helping kids catch up, keep up, or get ahead in math. “Mathnasium’s programs have 98% of the parents polled stating their students improved,” she shared. Karen is a former third grade, fifth grade, and special education teacher who has written math curriculum for elementary campuses, as well as serving as an administrator. She knows how important the summer months can be Mathnasium Mathnasium of North to pave the way for long-term academic success. “Sometimes the classroom of La Costa Carlsbad/Oceanside is overwhelming and their questions can’t be answered before the bell,” 451 Via Montebello 2624 El Camino Real said Karen. “Summer is the perfect time to make sense of things without the Suite 190 Suite 2624A pressure of school being in session.” Carlsbad, CA 92009 Carlsbad, CA 92008 Discover more at www.mathnasium.com/lacosta and 858-335-5686 760-729-1890 www.mathnasium.com/northcarlsbad. ¢ April | May 2017 • 92081 MAGAZINE.COM • 31

LITTLE ROOKIES & ALLSTAR BASEBALL & SOFTBALL SUMMER CAMPS L

ittle Rookies and AllStar Baseball and Softball camps offer boys and girls ages 4 to 12 the ultimate training environment. Baseball and softball programs are divided into age and skill divisions for the best individual experience. The Little Rookies division serves ages 4 to 6, and AllStar Baseball and Softball serves ages 7 to 12. Full-day, half-day, and extended options are available to fit any family schedule at locations throughout San Diego. “My goal is for each player to first have an enjoyable experience, learn all the great fundamentals of the game the right way, and round themselves out to become the complete player by playing in a live game each day,” said Coach Kurtis Swanberg, owner of Little Rookies. Young players learn the fundamentals with state-ofthe-art equipment – hitting and throwing nets, baseball and softball pitching machines, portable pitching mounds, a 60 by 15-foot batting cage, and more. Every afternoon is a chance to put those fundamentals into practice with daily live games. The team spirit and camaraderie solidify the experience. “The players and families look forward to summer camp every year, and it’s a big reunion of players, friends, families, and coaches,” said Coach Kurtis. “It’s amazing to see the kids’ growth each summer as they move up in divisions.” As Brad Ausmus, Manager of the Detroit Tigers, put it, “Coach Kurtis teaches each student valuable fundamental work that connects them to the game and creates super confidence in all as they learn under him. Inspect Your Roof Before It Leaks T

his winter seems to be one of the wettest we have seen in quite some time. Maybe the El Niño we were expecting last year has finally come this year? Since our weather is so mild most of the year we are rarely concerned about preparing our roofs for winter or possible storms. This year we have had an excess amount of rain causing an exceptional amount of roof leaks. This has kept the local roofers very busy. First you need to know what type of roof material you have. Do you have a tile roof or shingle roof? Tile roofs last the longest. The tile itself is designed as a watershed to protect the roofing underlayment (felt). The felt installed underneath the tile is considered waterproof but the felt is organic and can deteriorate over time causing a leak. Shingle roofs are usually easier to repair but don’t last as long. These roofs can have leaks due to many factors including damage to the shingles, missing shingles, and even leaks where the shingle meets the chimney or a vent coming out of the roof. Although you may not be a roofer,

there are some problem areas to look for including cracked, blistered, raised, or buckled shingles, exposed nails, and just plain worn-out looking spots. If you notice any of these things you should contact a licensed roofing company to come out and take a look. We are hoping that this will remind you to take a look now and catch any potential problems before they become serious issues. Even if you think everything is
