Call Me “Breaux”
A
little over a year ago, I wrote about how our kids were taking music lessons and having fun learning to play and sing various popular songs. They are now into music more than ever before, and a lot has happened in a year. In case you are hearing about this for the first time, Peyton plays guitar and sings. Audrey plays drums and piano, but she insists that drums are her number one. The two of them have come a long way over the last year. For starters, they formed a band and decided to officially name their two-person “brother and sister” duo Call Me Breaux. When we discussed their name choice, both Audrey and Peyton explained that people have called them by their last name (pronounced “bro”) their entire life – especially in sports – so it just makes sense for a band name. When my wife and I realized how much they liked singing and performing, we started to gradually convert our dining room into a small music studio. On any given day, you can often hear some type of music being performed by one or both of them. And every once in a while, something magical happens when they come together and play their growing set of songs. It’s fun to be preparing dinner and hear your kids jamming out in the other room. Who needs a radio when you can get live performances inside your house daily? And although they love to play music for the pure sense of accomplishment, now they’ve experienced the thrill of performing live on stage. Last month, they were invited to play a set at the world-famous Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood. A couple of weeks later, they played the House of Blues in San Diego. This was particularly special for them because quite a few of their friends were at the show. They made it clear to me that having their friends in the audience was the coolest thing ever! It’s a pretty crazy thing to stand in the audience and watch your kids (ages 13 and 12) get up on stage in front of a crowd. As a parent, I experience a wide range of emotions. I’m nervous for them. I’m proud of them. And I’m amazed at their determination and willingness to put themselves out there. So far, they’ve only played cover songs. But recently, they have decided that writing and producing their own original songs is where they want to go. They said that it would be awesome to hear their songs playing on the radio one day, so now they are more determined than ever to make this happen. A special thank you to The Fine Tune Academy for continuing to teach music theory to our kids, to Studio West for providing a great local professional recording atmosphere, and to family and friends (you know who you are) that offer amazing support for their music journey. Be sure to check out their next performance at the House of Blues in San Diego on March 31. A limited number of discounted tickets are available. Email hello@callmebreaux.com for more information.

ista resident Mireya Gonzalez, 11, loves her community. “I like living here because it’s a fun and interactive place, and you can go to so many places like the beach and hiking in the mountains,” she shared. She has lived in Vista her entire life. Mireya enjoys school as a sixth grader at Guajome Park Academy. “It’s a very big place, and you can go many places within the school. I like that it’s an art school. It’s fun! Right now we’re doing a talent show, and I enjoy the pep rallies,” she related. Her favorite subject is history. “The world we are living in right now is very different from ancient times. It’s very interesting to see how people lived a long time ago,” she explained. This go-getter is involved in many activities, from sports to performing arts. “I just started volleyball this season, and I am very involved in singing at school,” Mireya said. “Singing is something all of us do in our family. My cousins started singing very young. My mom started me in singing classes when I was six for about a year. I’ve liked singing as long as I can remember.” Although she gets nervous before performing, it’s one of Mireya’s passions. She also likes to give back to the community. Mireya volunteers at her local Boys & Girls Club as part of the junior staff. She used to help other students with their homework at her previous school, Vista Academy of Performing Arts, and tutor younger kids during lunch at Guajome. Mireya is inspired by her mother, Iran Herrera. “She didn’t graduate high school or college and really encourages me to work hard at school so I can have a good career. She works really hard for the family. She’s a single mom,” she said. Mireya hopes to someday attend the Naval Academy and become a Navy SEAL. ¢

ANNUAL AWARENESS WALK HIGHLIGHTS A COMMUNITY ISSUE photo by Jackie Piro Huyck
S
oroptimist International of Vista and North County Inland (SIVNCI) recently sponsored the 12th Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Walk to shed light on the impact of sexual exploitation in the community. More than 150 Vista residents gathered with signs to march from the Wave Water Park to Civic Center Dr. and back. Retired FBI agent Masayo Halpin spoke of her experiences with task forces in Portland, OR to stop human trafficking, and about a girl involved in human trafficking, who after consistent “SIVNCI SEEKS TO RAISE AWARENESS care was able to escape her AND EDUCATE COMMUNITIES ABOUT hardships. Jaimee Johnson, HUMAN TRAFFICKING, IN PART BY founder of the nonprofit Sisters of INITIATING AN AWARENESS PROGRAM...” the Streets and peer counselor with Project LIFE, a program part of the North County Lifeline Organization, also spoke of her own experiences as a victim. She and the Project LIFE team have helped in the rescue and treatment of nearly 150 girls since 2012. SIVNCI seeks to raise awareness and educate communities about human trafficking, in part by initiating an awareness program called the North San Diego County Human Trafficking Collaborative. In addition to the annual Awareness Walk, SIVNCI also maintains a speakers’ bureau to provide information about human trafficking to organizations in North San Diego County, provides updates on legislation relative to human trafficking, and provides news articles about human trafficking. For the past several years, food trucks seem to have taken over the culinary scene in cities around the world. This modern dining option offers quick, gourmet food – anytime, anywhere. Mobile cuisine encompasses everything from burgers and tacos to grilled cheese sandwiches and international fusions – each with their own unique twist. One frequent visitor to the Vista Farmers Market includes the Amo Nakatl truck, meaning "no meat" in the ancient Mexican dialect of Nahuatl, and specializes in vegan Mexican food.

GARRY GARRETSON: GIVING BACK TO VISTA, VETERANS, AND CHURCH by BECCA BARR photo by Kilalio Photography
G
arry Garretson loves Vista, where he’s lived for the past 25 years. “I enjoy the diversity of great people, my church, my neighbors, the varying terrains, and the climatic wonderland where we live,” Garry related. “My neighbors are fabulous. We care about each other.” Originally from Boone County, WV, Garry settled in Vista by way of Connecticut and Washington, D.C. After serving in the Navy for four years, Garry spent the next 40 years working for ServiceMaster/Aramark, the company that eventually brought him to Vista. “We were contracted to manage support departments in hospitals, universities, public schools, sports arenas, and other facilities,” Garry explained. He was promoted through a variety of positions until he retired in 2010. Garry is not sitting idly in retirement. He volunteers with many local organizations. He’s a member of the Vista Chamber of Commerce and served 12 years with the Vista Education Foundation. “We helped the Vista Unified School District achieve and maintain a superior primary and secondary education system,” Garry said. He is also involved with Educate to Career, a group that helps people make decisions for college and career. Working with veterans is another cause dear to Garry’s heart. “I served in the Navy, flying as an air crewman for three years in Vietnam. When returning to civilian life, we were greeted with hate and hostility,” Garry recalled. “I vowed to do everything I could to ensure that future generations never experienced anything but support and thanks.” To that end, Garry is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He helps train veterans who are transitioning out of the military through the Veteran Career Transition Assistance Program, and is part of the Veterans’ Writing Group of San Diego. Garry also volunteers with the Vista Planning Commission and the North Coast Church, and has fond memories about past groups he’s worked with. “Each organization is important for me to give back, make our community better, and have a bunch of fun,” Garry noted. “We are either part of the solution, part of the problem, or waiting for somebody else to do it. I am focused on leading, following, or getting out of the way when others take control.” Garry has been married to his wife, Julie, for 50 years. Together they have three children and one grandson. When not volunteering, he can be found hiking and writing short stories, novels, and poetry. ¢ Know a volunteer that should be profiled in 92081 Magazine?

The donations collected will go to Heifer International, a global nonprofit focused on eliminating hunger and poverty, to buy seven goats. The WCV has been a long-time supporter of Heifer International. These goats will go to a family in a developing country, who will use them for milk, wool, muscle to raise crops, and profit from selling the products. The family will then donate the first female goat to another family, repeating the process. The Girl Scouts explained that they made soap and candles from goat’s milk, packaged them in a small bucket with a washcloth, and sold them to raise donations. During the recent General Federation of Women’s Clubs’ Convention, the WCV President Judy Pantazo received the Heifer Hope award for supporting Heifer International. To learn more about the WCV visit www.womansclubofvista.org.
The City of Vista recently hosted a community workshop at Grapevine Elementary School to share conceptual designs and suggestions for improvements for the Bub Williamson Park on Grapevine Rd., first constructed in the 1980s. The workshop was intended to receive input from community members on how to upgrade the park. The city will also be hosting two workshops for the design of Pala Vista Park on Pala Vista Rd. The first workshop will be held on March 15 at 6 p.m. and the second will be held on March 24 at 2 p.m. Both workshops will take place at the Vista Civic Center Morris B. Vance Community Room. Residents will have the opportunity to share their vision and ideas on what types of improvements they would like to see at the future park site. Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year Awards
Mayor Ritter’s State of the City Address Mayor Judy Ritter recently delivered her 2018 State of the City Address at the Vista Civic Center, which highlighted some of Vista’s significant achievements in the past year. Among them were a $6 million investment in road and infrastructure improvements and $10 million in renovations and upgrades over the past two years for the city’s 13 parks. “When I first addressed you seven years ago as your new mayor, I pledged to improve our public safety, grow our economy, and lay the foundation for a better future. With the crime rate at a 20-year low, quick emergency responses, increased city reserves, smoother and better paved roads, and a significant investment in our parks, we are fulfilling that commitment,” she said. Mayor Ritter also commented that the City would be conducting two community meetings in March to seek input for developments of the Pala Vista community park.
Bench Project Serves Hundreds in Mexico Local nonprofit Sustainable Surplus was recently tasked with finding a new home for 150 used bus stop benches from the City of San Diego. The benches, which were headed to Miramar Landfill, are made of difficult-to-recycle and non-decomposing fiberglass material. When no use was found for the benches in San Diego, Sustainable Surplus CEO Sue Prelozni reached out to Adolfo Delgado, Binational Coalition of Nonprofits (BCN) partner and Executive Director of the Comité Binacional Unidos por la Niñez (CBUN) in Mexico. With Adolfo’s help, the benches were refurbished, repurposed, and distributed to several cities throughout Mexico, where they will be used in parks, churches, schools, and community centers. BCN was founded in 2017 to facilitate the handling of donated items that cannot be reused or repurposed locally, resulting in at least 12 crossborder donations in the past year. Rob Schupp, Director of Marketing and Communications for the Metropolitan Transit System, said, “This is a great example of agencies coming together to find solutions that are good for the planet.” For more information visit www.sustainablesurplus.org.
The Boys & Girls Club of Vista (BGCV) recently hosted its annual Youth of the Year awards celebration, honoring 22 outstanding club members who have made an impact in their community. Julie Martinez, a 17-year-old senior at Rancho Buena Vista High, was named Youth of the Year for 2017. Julie is active in her involvement with volunteering in BGCV’s junior staff program, tutoring, playing in her high school band’s drumline, public policy club, and drama club. Julie says she plans to continue her education after high school working in the medical industry. BGCV is an independent and local youth development organization affiliated with the Boys & Girls Club of America. BGCV raises 100% of the funds that provide fun, educational programs for all youth during non-school hours, serving over 2,400 youth a year, as well as the local community. Vista Chamber to Host Annual Community Gala The Vista Chamber of Commerce and Vista Education Foundation will be hosting the 7th Annual Heroes of Vista Gala on April 13 at California State University San Marcos. a whole,” said Tannaz Kirichkow, Owner of CAS. “Our goal is to make sure our kids gain a strong sense of self confidence that will carry on for the rest of their lives.” CAS offers tumbling camps in the summer, which focus on tumbling techniques for beginners, intermediate, and advanced levels. The camps can last two or three days and are three hours per day. Camps are open to both boys and girls. SUMMER CAMP GUIDE
CARLSBAD ART FARM
C
arlsbad Art Farm is a small visual arts school tucked away on a beautiful stream-side woodland property in coastal North County. Art Farm’s camps for grades 2–8 are designed to inspire a deep connection to animals and the natural world through traditional studio art education. Winner of the “Most Awesome Camp for Kids in SoCal” award for the past three years, Art Farm’s unique blend of outstanding art instruction in the woods with a menagerie of farm animals has enchanted local students and families for the past 14 years. While this is an arts camp, kids don’t sit down all day. Instruction takes place at a variety of outdoors locations, inside the Imaginarium Print Studio, in the barn, and down by the creek. They keep it moving! Campers are assigned to one of three base camps based on grade level. Students learn how to sketch live animals, draw in charcoal, develop paintings, work a monotype printing press, and design paper boats for the popular Friday Boat Pageant and Creek Race. Three hours daily are dedicated art classes. The balance of time is spent with staff exploring the local habitat, hanging out with the animals, enjoying lunch, and making new friends. Each week ends with the All Camp Art Show, to which family and friends are invited. Camp sessions begin June 18 and are held Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Camp is extended to 4 p.m. Fridays only for the student art show. Longhorns Run to Find a Cure
F
inding a cure for cystic fibrosis has been an ongoing fight for the students and staff of Rancho Bueno Vista High School (RBV), thanks to the familiar slogan “Let’s make C.F. stand for cure found!” Cystic fibrosis is a hereditary disorder that affects 30,000 people in the United States alone. Stephanie Hawkins, a freshman and junior English teacher at RBV, has an incredibly strong, inspirational little boy named Ben who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at six weeks old. Superhero Ben, as he is known, is now a happy four-year-old who doesn’t let cystic fibrosis keep him down with the
help of his support team filled with amazing people. The RBV Fun Run is an annual run around the school’s track to raise money and awareness for Ben’s Brigade, an organization set up by the Hawkins family, and cystic fibrosis. On the day of the third annual run, approximately 40 caring Longhorns arrived on that Saturday morning and began their run to raise the money running alongside Ben and the Hawkins family. Over the past three years, Ben’s Brigade has raised over $4,000. Kaden Blair, a freshman at RBV, said his experience at the fun run was amazing.
“Ben is such a fun, lovable, kid, and it was amazing to see all of the people come out early that morning to support Ben and Mrs. Hawkins! I had a great time meeting new people and doing something for a good cause,” expressed Kaden. To donate or learn more about Ben’s Brigade, visit www.bensbrigade.com and www.cff.org. ¢

R E A L E S TAT E W AT C H
A Look at 92081’s Real Estate Numbers by JESSICA BREAUX
T
he figures are in for January, and the numbers remain quite strong for home sales in 92081. A quick comparison to the same time period last year shows some minor fluctuations. 92081 experienced a reduced number of new listings in January with a total of 19 new single family homes hitting the market, compared to 30 new listings in January 2017 (a decrease of 36%). The total inventory of single family homes for sale was down 50% with 10 homes available for purchase (versus 20 during the same period last year). The average number of days that homes were on the market during January was 13 days (compared to 38 days in January 2017). The 65% faster selling time is consistent with the drop in total available inventory,
demonstrating a strong seller’s market. Home values are very strong (and continue to be at an all-time high). The median sales price of a 92081 single family home during the month of January was $569K (an increase of 14% compared to last January’s $499K median price). Townhouses and condominiums are experiencing very similar trends with short market times and very low available inventory. If you are considering making a move, you should be able to do so with confidence. Give me a call to schedule a meeting. It’s important to work with someone that you trust, and I would love the opportunity to get to know you, earn your trust, and discuss your real estate goals. ¢
