About Last Night
T
Derrick Breaux Publisher
here’s nothing quite like a good party. It is often the end result of a lot of work and preparation. The reward. A gathering of friends, business associates, family, coworkers – many people coming together that share something in common. As I write this issue’s note, I find myself with a little extra hop in my step and a smile on my face. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that today is a Friday – and the end of a long and productive week. But what’s really on my mind is last night’s ZCode Magazines’ epic party! With the launch of our eleventh publication, 08/10 Magazine, covering the North Carlsbad zip codes of 92008 and 92010, we decided to make the official announcement with a grand celebration – ZCode style. And we felt that the iconic Carlsbad Flower Fields was the perfect venue – the Paul Ecke Jr. Family Barn made for a very cool setting. So why was last night’s party so great? Was it the fact that we were blessed to have over 300 guests ranging from local business owners, politicians, and school officials to friends and family members of the ZCode Team? You bet it was! Last night was not only a night to celebrate the launch of 08/10 Magazine, but it was a celebration of community in general. You see, it is my belief that most of the people that live in North San Diego County live here by choice and not necessity. The vast majority of our neighbors are proud to live in their community. In fact, they love living in their community. It is this bond that makes everything work. It is this bond that makes each of the unique communities of North County so special. I am surrounded by an incredible group of people that make up the ZCode Team. Day in and day out they are in the office busting their butts and working hard to create magazines that we hope people want to read. Everyone has a unique part of the puzzle. It was an amazing experience to see our team mingling and socializing with many of the people that have either been featured in one of the ZCode Magazines or people that are loyal readers of the magazines. Having the ability for the team to connect faces with names, laugh and socialize make it all worth it. There are many moving parts to publishing hyper-local community magazines. First and foremost, it takes the vision, determination, and desire to produce a great product. For that, I would like to give a heartfelt “thank you” to the ZCode crew. Of equal importance is the loyalty of the local residents and advertisers – both of which ZCode Magazines would not exist without. We all need to thank them. So last night we celebrated. We celebrated you. We celebrated community. We celebrated family, friends, and coworkers. We celebrated being the best that we all can be. We celebrated an incredible journey that I like to call PASSION. I want to thank you for being a loyal reader. And thanks for supporting ZCode Magazines and supporting the advertisers that are responsible for delivering this magazine to your mailboxes.

MiraCosta Honors Scholar is a Community Leader by LYDIA COBB | photos by Spark Photography
A
riella Sosis speaks Russian, graduated high school at 16, and is now a junior at MiraCosta College. Along with being an honors scholar and maintaining a 4.0 GPA, she volunteers in her local and collegiate communities. What’s next for Ariella Sosis? “It is my ultimate dream to run a nonprofit organization or social business,” reflected Ariella (and on the side, a singing career). With a degree in business, she aspires to “leave a legacy of positive change in the world.” Ariella credits her positive college experience to the high-quality faculty members that give endless support to students – recommendation letters, career planning, and in their teaching. “Often, it isn’t the subject, it’s the professor that makes a class for me,” affirmed Ariella. Home for Ariella Sosis is 4S Ranch, where she has lived since she was 5. On campus, she’s a leader for communicating civility and tolerance. She founded MiraCosta’s Hillel Club when she saw an opportunity

to create a Jewish community, soon joined by more than 100 student members of all faiths. As a college ambassador, she works with returning veterans struggling with PTSD. She also became a student advocate for a veteran’s center on the Oceanside campus. She’s also a meticulous note taker for disabled students. On a very personal level, she’s involved in health awareness. “Unfortunately, many Ashkenazi Jews face genetic gastrointestinal diseases, such as Crohn’s disease, which almost killed my mother and sister,” said Ariella. She founded Oil Me for Research, a nonprofit that spreads awareness for Crohn’s disease through custom graphics, T-shirts and local art. A lifelong love of music balances this young community leader. “Music is the song of the soul and it impassions me every day,” reflected Ariella. She’s been singing all her life and learned guitar in her teens. In 2012, she received the Certificate of Merit in Music Theory and Piano Mastery. Her inspirations are both worldly and right at home. Nobel Peace Prize recipient Muhammad Yunus’ microloan program for the world’s poor people is one of her greatest inspirations. Her sisters and parents are her mentors, encouraging her to extend from comfort zones and to reach her dreams beyond doubt. Her training as a sales and marketing intern in the watches division of Versace gives her experience in international business. Time will tell where Ariella is headed next – she’s laying the ground for a positive future. ¢

INDIA STARR DONATES SUPPLIES TO SCHOOL IN BELIZE
T
he Starr family has always loved vacations to far-off tropical places. Their family motto is “We live on a big planet! Life is too short not to go see it!” When they decided to travel to Belize, the family came across Zion Elementary School in their research, and discovered the school was in dire need of supplies. Daughter India Starr decided to take matters into her own hands and go above and beyond for this foreign school. India, a 6th grader from Oak Valley Middle School, cleaned out her closet and sold the items she no longer needed. She used the funds to purchase school supplies and together with her family, they brought the supplies to Zion Elementary School during their trip. She was able to meet and greet the students at the school as well. Nicki Starr, India’s mother, said. “It was a very humbling experience for her at such a young age. The entire experience was life changing for us as a family. India realized that not all kids grow up in situations like she is blessed to be from.” Now dubbed “Project School Supplies: Belize”, the Starr family is already planning their return trip to the tropical nation, along with plans to continually raise more funds and supplies for Zion Elementary. “If people would like to donate new school supplies or new or used children’s books (grade levels for books: K – 8), we will happily accept donations and get them to Belize,” said Nicki. You can contact Nicki Starr for more information about donations by emailing her at nickistarr@sbcglobal.net. ¢

tephani Stone is no stranger to moving, having lived in Big Spring, Dallas, Midland, Lubbock, San Antonio, Austin and McKinney, TX. She graduated from Texas Tech in Lubbock, began teaching in San Antonio and worked for the Texas Education Agency, and married her husband, Bill, in Austin. A year after their first son was born, they moved to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and returned to Austin for the birth of their second son. After the birth of their two daughters, they moved to McKinney, TX, and in 2008 they decided to move to San Diego. Once the Stones knew they were relocating, they researched schools and neighborhoods. The developer of their McKinney home was the same developer for 4S Ranch; so, they began their search there. Then, one year, Stephani received a flier about the Art Corps program while attending back to school night at Oak Valley Middle school and decided to attend the first meeting. “I loved the idea of being in the classroom and giving the students a chance to experience art,” she mentioned excitedly. She is now the supply co-ordinator, which means she ensures the supplies are on hand and organized for
each of the five lessons that are taught at each grade, for a total of fifteen lessons. She is also the lead volunteer in three classes and a volunteer in a fourth. This involves attending a workshop for each lesson before presenting it to students. She loves being able to know her kids’ classmates, teachers and other volunteers and seeing the students’ reactions when they realize they will be completing an art lesson. She revealed, “I have really enjoyed seeing the students grow and progress over the years.” Currently, all of Stephani’s children are teenagers. Her oldest son Trey studies computer engineering at Purdue University, Reece and Bailey attend Del Norte High School, and Cate is an Oak Valley Middle School eighth grader. When time allows, Stephani hikes local 4S trails and walks to local shops and restaurants. ¢

ere at ZCode Media, our employees are like our family, and our magazines and readers are like family too. Carlsbad’s family of publications, including 92009 and 92011 Magazines, is now complete with the introduction of 08/10 Magazine. This past April, ZCode Media held a launch party for the new magazine at the Paul Ecke Jr. Family Barn amidst the picturesque Carlsbad Flower Fields. With the flowers in full bloom and the guests in full smiles, it was a night to remember. The packed house enjoyed delicious food, scrumptious desserts, and hot-ticket raffle items with over $14,000 in prizes. All $1,060 raised from the raffle went to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego. The night concluded with a few words from our co-owners, ZCode Media Publisher Derrick Breaux and Creative Director Tyler McElhaney, who premiered a riveting video on our newest addition to the ZCode bunch. rawn to a community with lots of young families and a great school district, Devin and Shreya Shea moved to 4S Ranch in 2009 and opened their business – Shea Family Chiropractic. Devin is a chiropractor, and Shreya supports the family business and works part time as a pediatric physician assistant with Family Health Centers. Wanting to spend the maximum time possible with their two boys, Shreya works only on Mondays and Tuesdays, and Devin spends a daddy day at home every Tuesday. Devin and Shreya met at UC Irvine where Devin received his Bachelor’s degree in sociology and Shreya transferred to UCLA and earned her Bachelor’s degree in psychology. They then both traveled and worked in Europe before Devin received his Doctor of Chiropractic at Los Angeles College of Chiropractic and Shreya received her Master's of Physician Assistant at Western University.

The Sheas live a healthy lifestyle which includes chiropractic adjustments, growing their own vegetables, Crossfit and outdoor activities, eating fruits, veggies, meats, nuts and seeds while avoiding dairy, grains and processed sugar. Three-year-old son Kieren recently asked what a donut was, and Shreya shared, “We turned off cable TV three years ago and don’t miss it.” Kieren, known for his large vocabulary and love of books, attends preschool at Turtleback Elementary and will soon attend the new Design39Campus. He recently began martial arts and is in his fourth session of Little Rascalz Soccer. Dylan is the newest Shea family addition. Devin sped down the freeway to UCSD at the last minute because Shreya wanted to deliver naturally without medication. She faced the opposite way in the passenger seat with the windows down and barked orders to find a relaxing radio station between contractions. Twenty minutes after reaching the hospital, Dylan arrived. He is now full of smiles and enjoys watching his brother. Both Devin and Shreya volunteer. On weekends Devin conducts free workshops on chiropractic care, paleo nutrition, functional movement and stress management. He also provides free chiropractic care in Guatemala. Shreya works with the underserved pediatric population and enjoys helping children adopt healthy lifestyles. For fun, the Sheas travel. They developed a love of Thai food from a month long Thailand trip, and they recently swam with dolphins and fed stingrays in Jamaica. Shreya boasted, “Kieren was very brave and didn’t shy away from the stingrays at all. Even Dylan got to touch a dolphin.” ¢

92127 STUDENTS SUCCEED IN EXPLORAVISION SCIENCE COMPETITION photos by LESLIE CARLSON of Willow Grove Elementary
S
cience fair projects are a staple in schools across the U.S., challenging budding scientists to solve current problems. But it’s not very often that you find students challenged to think farther ahead into the future, and imagine what technology will be like twenty years down the road. The ExploraVision competition, presented by Toshiba and NSTA, has created a unique science contest where any idea is possible. Groups of two to four students are paired with a mentoring teacher to pick a current technology and imagine what that technology could be like in the future. The 22nd Annual ExploraVision Competition Regional Winners hail from Willow Grove Elementary School. This group of 2nd grade scientists proudly created a Hurricane Stopper; a satellite device that identifies a hurricane forming and sends a signal to a specialized water cooling system in the ocean, which will cause the hurricane to lose energy before it hits land. Team members included Ellie Carroll, Nicole Edelstein, Mia Haffie, and Kyla Kuo, who were inspired by the recent hurricane that devastated the Philippines. “At that time our class was collecting medical supplies, stuffed animals, and blankets to send to the Philippines,” the girls shared. “We decided that we wanted to make an invention to stop hurricanes and save millions of lives.” Theresa Abueg was their coach and Lori Edelstein served as a mentor. “Although we mentored and coached this incredible team of girls,” said Theresa and Lori, “we’ve grown and learned from each of them, as well.”

The winning team was honored at Willow Grove Elementary School. They received a Toshiba laptop for their school and received a Toshiba tablet each, in addition to the team advancing to the national competition. The Willow Grove team will now have a chance to turn their idea from a simple sketch into a prototype to present at the national level. ¢

Fry ground beef with chopped onion. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Add 1 can of tomato sauce. Use same can to add 1 can of water to the beef and onions. Cook for about 10 minutes. In a casserole dish make layers of: ground beef sauce, noodles, tomato sauce, and grated jack cheese. Keep making layers using the remaining cans of tomato sauce. The last layer ends with the cheese on top. I generally do the layering only two times. Bake at 350 degrees for about 20 to 25 minutes until heated through. Note: This casserole can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge; however you’ll need to adjust the heating up time to double. It’s ready when the sauce is bubbling. Makes: 4 – 6 servings Total Time: 45 minutes

Masters on the Field
SOCAL UNITED HEADS TO ROME FOR WORLD TOURNAMENT
A
team of lucky soccer players has been given the opportunity of a lifetime: to represent their country in the Junior Masters World Tournament in Rome, Italy. The SoCal United BU12 team first qualified for regionals in San Francisco last year, leading up to the Volkswagon Junior Masters Nationals in Kansas City in the summer. “We went to Kansas City more with the hopes of having a great experience at such a prestigious event,” said Head Coach Jim Flowers. “We were not able to train together as much as other teams were able to.” Despite that disadvantage, SoCal United rose up in the ranks over the rival teams, who hailed from Los Angeles to Baltimore in five “extremely tough games.” Coach Flowers cites the team’s offensive strength and “attack-minded formation” as a key to their victories. When asked about the teams they might be facing in the Junior Masters World Tournament, Coach Flowers listed youth teams from professional clubs in Europe, “including Ajax (Holland), AC Chievo (Italy), Lech Poznan (Poland), FC Basel (Switzerland), Sturm Graz (Austria), Besiktas (Turkey), and Hertha Berlin (Germany) just to name a few.” Twenty-four countries were represented in all at the tournament. But the boys aren’t letting any intimidation cut through their bond as a team. “Most of these kids have been adversaries over the years on their local club teams, so sometimes you worry that there may be an issue with that,” said Coach Flowers. “Instead, they almost instantly connected as a team and in my opinion is probably their biggest strength.” ¢

onterey Ridge Elementary School recently celebrated their 8th Annual Fun Run with over 1,100 students running alongside their classmates and teachers. Over 700 students who pledged this year also earned the Fun Run shirt for free. “This is the only major PTA fundraiser of the year, and this year’s event broke our school record for funds raised!” said Lisa Herndon, PTA Fun Run Chair for Monterey Ridge. That new record is now over $24,000, all of which goes back to the school. The money raised will fund Monterey Ridge school programs such as art, music, P.E. and the school’s Garden Club. ¢

hen her father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year, Erika Jimenez researched 5K cancer benefit events that the family could join. She found PurpleStride. Ironically, purple is her eldest daughter’s favorite color. Even more of a twist: PurpleStride benefits Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Just as pink represents breast cancer, purple represents pancreatic cancer. “I decided not to just sign up for the event, but to create a team and raise money,” said Erika Jimenez. Her team of close friends and family was named “Fighting Feavers” in support of her father, Steve Feaver. Together, they raised $10,000 in less than six weeks and became the top fundraising team for the 2013 PurpleStride 5K and Fun Run/Walk. “I am probably most proud of our daughters,” shared Erika. “They really wanted to pitch in and raise money too.” They set up a lemonade stand and sold purple frosted sugar cookies that generated $165. They also collected recyclables and donated the proceeds. PurpleStride San Diego is an allages 5K run/walk that will be held at De Anza Cove in Mission Bay Park on Sept. 21. stand, and Erika invites community members to participate in the event and help raise even more money for cancer awareness and research. Tax-deductible donations of any amount are welcome. The five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is just 6%, according to www.pancan.org. By 2020, pancreatic cancer could become the second leading cause of cancer death. It is frequently diagnosed once it has already reached aggressive stages. Erika urges others to get standard diagnostic tests for early detection. The Jimenez family lives in 4S Ranch. Karl Strauss Brewery is a favorite get-away, among gastronomic destinations that include Sweet Things and Panera. Nick and Erika met at Fresno State University and have been married thirteen years. Natalie attends 6th grade at Oak Valley Middle School and Noelle is in 4th grade at Monterey Ridge Elementary. “My entire family was so grateful for all the support that we received and were so humbled by the generosity of so many people that donated to our team,” reflected Erika. The Fighting Feavers will be walking this year’s PurpleStride in memory of Steve Feaver who succumbed to his cancer last December. Yet with hope for a cure, they’ll be joined by many who share the same dream. ¢

The Del Sur Education Foundation (DSEF) held their “Night At The Ranch” fundraiser, to help fund impacted teachers, arts and music, and the engineering program for the school. Performing Their Dental Duties
Dr. Spencer of 4S Pediatric Dentistry goes above and beyond his dental duties. He enjoys going out into the community to speak to kids about good dental habits. He helps the kids act out scenarios, drops off supplies and leaves educational pieces to help with various elementary and preschools. This past February was Children’s Dental Health Month, so the dentists spent more time and effort this month finding ways to make dental care fun for kids. Dr. Pham, of 4S Pediatric Dentistry, elaborated that the experience makes their patients’ visits to any dentist more fun and more positive, and that developing good habits at an early age and regular dental visits help children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

Halstrom Academy Provides Students with Individualized and Flexible Learning Options
by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos by Tyler McElhaney
H
alstrom Academy was started in 1985 by Karen Bishop, an educator who wanted to create a more personalized and flexible approach to learning for students who have unique circumstances, such as actors, athletes, students with ADD, ADHD or social anxiety and students who wish to learn at their own pace and accelerate their learning. Flexible scheduling options and the 1:1 student teacher ratio differentiate Halstrom from the traditional school model. Students who attend Halstrom Academy are given the opportunity to become self-directed learners, creative problem solvers, effective communicators and active participants in their communities while they prepare for successful college and working careers. According to Halstrom Academy San Diego, they offer robust college preparatory and Advanced Placement programs, as well as 1:1 SAT preparation, college counseling and tutoring. As stated by Halstrom educators, the school provides a small, caring environment that fosters strong three-way communication between parents, students and teachers. This communication allows students to flourish in an educational model that is tailored specifically to their individual needs and learning styles. Technology is a large part of Halstrom’s commitment to enhancing student and teacher communication. Both students and teachers use iPads that are loaded with eTextbooks and other educational applications. According to Halstrom Academy, technology can help teachers provide students with real life examples to make material more relevant. For example, it is not unusual for literature teachers to use visual arts, movies and/or music to complement the core curriculum. The student population at Halstrom San Diego is comprised of young entrepreneurs, community volunteers, strong leaders and professional athletes. Jacob Szekely is an excellent example of a student athlete who directly benefits from the flexibility offered by Halstrom Academy. “What I really like about Halstrom is the 1:1 teaching and how they are able to cater to my needs as a professional athlete,” said Jacob, 2013 National Scholastic Surfing Association West Coast Men’s Champion. According to Jacob, attending Halstrom has allowed him to receive a top-notch education, as well as to focus on his professional surfing career.

ONE Players Find Success in the DNHS and RBHS Golf Programs photos by Spark Photography
The
arrival of spring brings Padres games, beach trips, and the most popular sport in which the player with the lowest score wins. We’re talking about golf, of course; more specifically, high school golf. Commonly referred to as one of the most difficult games to master, the sport has a solid foundation built at both Del Norte High School (DNHS) and Rancho Bernardo High School (RBHS). With the abundance of world-class courses right in our backyard, it’s no wonder our young athletes have such great success on the links. We talked with DNHS Coach Mike Reifeiss and RBHS Coaches Tim Steigerwald and Richard Deem about their respective programs and what makes golf such a popular and rewarding sport in 92127.

Q&A with Mike Reifeiss,
Del Norte High School Boys and Girls Varsity Golf Coach
WHAT IS THE HISTORY BEHIND YOUR CAREER AS AN ATHLETE AND AS A COACH? I grew up in Rancho Bernardo and played golf at RBHS, graduated from SDSU, and played some of the mini tours in Southern California.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN THE HEAD COACH AND WHAT ENTICED YOU TO WANT TO COACH? I have been coaching at Del Norte for five years, and love working with kids at the high school level.
CAN YOU PROVIDE AN OUTLOOK FOR THE TEAM THIS YEAR? The Del Norte girls golf team will return with most of our team from last season, with two regional qualifiers last year, and Annika Chickering and Nastasia Kossacky will lead the way.
WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE GOAL THE GIRLS HAVE THIS YEAR? Our goal for the girls team is to break into the top two in San Diego and qualify to regionals, win our fifth league title, and to keep improving in all areas of the sport.
WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT ABOUT COACHING? THE MOST CHALLENGING? The most rewarding part of coaching is the kids. Developing them as athletes and young men and women is what coaching is all about. I love when they come back from college and visit with the team. Honestly, it’s the best part of my day working with them.

WHAT IS YOUR COACHING PHILOSOPHY AND HOW DO YOU INSTILL THAT UPON THE PLAYERS? My coaching philosophy is that we are all part of the family, everyone plays a role. The team chemistry that has been created over the years is extremely special. The last match and van ride home for the season is an emotional one with the girls, tears are always flowing, and all the girls seem really sad to end the season. The kids are so connected on and off the golf course. I’m really lucky to have such an exceptional group of kids come through the program.
TELL US ABOUT THE SUPPORT YOU RECEIVE FROM PARENTS, VOLUNTEERS AND THE COMMUNITY. The support that we receive from parents, the school and the community is phenomenal. The Rancho Bernardo Inn and staff has been really great to us.
IF YOU COULD GRANT THE TEAM ONE WISH THIS YEAR, WHAT WOULD THAT BE? The one wish I would grant, if I could, would be to win another league

title and qualify for regionals. They have worked so hard over the years, it would be such a tremendous accomplishment if they did.
IS THERE ANY LOCAL TALENT WHO HAS GONE ON TO PLAY ON A COLLEGIATE AND/OR PROFESSIONAL LEVEL?
DO YOU HAVE ANY UPCOMING EVENTS, FUNDRAISERS OR TOURNAMENTS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH OUR READERS?
We had our first scholarship athlete in Paris Griffith, a four-time captain, two-time regional qualifier, two-time valley league player of the year, and she is playing at UC Riverside.
We are hosting our 5th Annual Boys/ Girls golf tournament at the Rancho Bernardo Inn in September. Please email mikereifeiss@yahoo.com for additional information.
TELL US ABOUT THE COACHING STAFF AND WHAT THEY BRING TO THE TEAM. We added a great new addition to the JV team this year. Mark Johns is in his first season.
WHAT DO MOST GIRLS/BOYS ON THE TEAM DO DURING THE OFFSEASON? Most of the girls/boys will be playing in golf tournaments and practicing in the off-season.
WHAT AWARDS/ACCOLADES/ RECOGNITION HAS THE TEAM GARNERED OVER THE YEARS? The girls golf team has won four straight league titles, with a record of 38 – 2 in league play.
HOW DO YOU STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF ACADEMICS TO THE STUDENT ATHLETES? All of our student athletes understand academics comes first. We have one of the strongest GPAs at the school.
IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE THE TEAM THIS YEAR IN FIVE WORDS OR LESS, WHAT WOULD THAT BE? Determined to improve every year.

Q&A with Tim Steigerwald,
Rancho Bernardo High School Girls Head Golf Coach WHAT IS THE HISTORY BEHIND YOUR CAREER AS AN ATHLETE AND AS A COACH? Growing up in Upstate New York, I played golf as much as I could, which wasn’t much. In high school I didn’t play golf. Instead, I alternated between tennis and baseball. As a coach, I’ve coached the girls team at RB for the past eleven seasons. I have 176 wins which I believe is the most in San Diego.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN THE HEAD COACH AND WHAT ENTICED YOU TO WANT TO COACH? Eleven years. I wanted to coach golf because I love the sport and it gives me another opportunity to help kids. The game of golf, in my opinion, is probably the sport where life lessons can be taught more than any other.
CAN YOU PROVIDE AN OUTLOOK FOR THE TEAM THIS YEAR? Our goal this year is to make it to the State Championship. To do that we intend to finish in the top two at CIF and top three at Regional.
WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT ABOUT COACHING? THE MOST CHALLENGING? The most rewarding aspect is having a positive impact on the kids. The relationships you gain through golf is amazing. To have athletes keep in contact ten years after graduation asking for advice, getting invited to weddings, etc. is very rewarding. Also, I’ve made some great friendships with other coaches. There are always challenges working with teenagers, but ultimately the positives far outweigh any negatives.
COACH PROFILE INFORMATION FULL NAME: COMMUNITY: PROFESSION: EDUCATION: HOBBIES/INTERESTS: EMAIL:
Tim Steigerwald Rancho Bernardo Math Teacher Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies; Master of Science in Education Golf, drawing, spending time with my kids, traveling, tutoring timmykid@aol.com
WHAT IS YOUR COACHING PHILOSOPHY AND HOW DO YOU INSTILL THAT UPON THE GIRLS? I preach integrity above all else. To be the best you can be, you must put in the time to practice and there must be a willingness to learn about the game. Golf is way more than just hitting a ball. I’m also a stickler for punctuality; ask any of my girls! I also preach that the girls need to give back to the game.
TELL US ABOUT THE SUPPORT YOU RECEIVE FROM PARENTS, VOLUNTEERS AND THE COMMUNITY. Over the years, the parental support has been great. The main support I get from the parents is that they trust me with their kids. The biggest support we get is from Bernardo Heights Country Club (BHCC). They have been extremely generous and welcoming to our team. Without their generosity, there is no way we would have enjoyed the success that we have had over the years. The head pro, Monte Hanson, and all of the staff have been wonderful. We owe a great deal of gratitude to BHCC.
50 • 92127Magazine.com • May | June 2014
DO YOU HAVE ANY UPCOMING EVENTS, FUNDRAISERS OR TOURNAMENTS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH OUR READERS? We have two big fundraisers: our annual golf tournament which was this past February and our Bucks For Birdies program which allows donors to pledge an amount of money for every birdie our team has during the year. Anyone wanting to participate in this fun fundraiser can contact me for our upcoming season this fall.
TELL US ABOUT THE COACHING STAFF AND WHAT THEY BRING TO THE TEAM. For the first eight seasons, I worked alone. For the past few years, I have had help on Wednesdays. This has allowed me to spend time with my own children.
IS THERE ANY LOCAL TALENT WHO HAS GONE ON TO PLAY ON A COLLEGIATE AND/OR PROFESSIONAL LEVEL? Tiffany Joh played at UCLA and is currently on the LPGA Tour. Songy Yi turned professional and played on the Futures Tour. Jessica Yam played at the University of Denver
and UC Davis. Her sister, Jamie, played at University of NevadaReno. Madi Mendiola is currently playing at Mt. Holyoke, and Raquel Ek began her first year at University of Hawaii. We anticipate that at least two of our three returning players will wind up playing in college.
WHAT AWARDS/ACCOLADES/ RECOGNITION HAS THE TEAM GARNERED OVER THE YEARS? Over the past four years, our team has only lost nine times – eight of which were to the four-time state champions Torrey Pines. In 2003, Jessica Yam finished runner-up at CIF. Also, in 2003, Songy Yi finished second at the SoCal Regional tournament and then fifth place at State! As a team we have been one of two teams to make it to the SoCal Regional four years in a row!
Q&A with Richard Deem,
Rancho Bernardo High School Boys Head Golf Coach WHAT IS THE HISTORY BEHIND YOUR CAREER AS AN ATHLETE AND AS A COACH? I started helping with the JV team with Ed O’Connor in about 20052006, became the assistant varsity coach in 2010, and then head coach in 2011 when Coach Keller moved to Del Norte.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN THE HEAD COACH AND WHAT ENTICED YOU TO WANT TO COACH? This is my third year as the head coach. What initially drew me to trying to be a part of the golf team was the love of the game and the fact that the kids are the best. It is nice to see them outside of the classroom.
CAN YOU PROVIDE AN OUTLOOK FOR THE TEAM THIS YEAR? We are bringing back our top six players from last year, and we expect to improve.
WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT ABOUT COACHING? THE MOST CHALLENGING? The most rewarding part for me is watching the kids grow into young adults, and watching some phenomenal golfers. The most challenging part is trying to get the kids to balance playing time with academics. When our student athletes are in season they have so many obligations regarding homework, testing and golf matches. It is a difficult juggling act.
WEBSITE: PHONE: EMAIL:
WHAT IS YOUR COACHING PHILOSOPHY AND HOW DO YOU INSTILL THAT UPON THE BOYS? On our team, our best players have their own personal swing coaches that they work with. So basically my philosophy is to let them work with their swing coach while I manage the team and try to get our best six golfers on the course for CIF. I think the kids understand that we are here for a reason – to win a League title and compete well in CIF.
TELL US ABOUT THE SUPPORT YOU RECEIVE FROM PARENTS, VOLUNTEERS AND THE COMMUNITY. We get great support from our parents and the community. Our parents understand that we cannot run a golf program without their support. Also, Bernardo Heights Country Club gives us great support by allowing us to use their facility for matches and practice. It is one of the best courses in San Diego and we get to call it home.

DO YOU HAVE ANY UPCOMING EVENTS, FUNDRAISERS OR TOURNAMENTS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH OUR READERS?
IS THERE ANY LOCAL TALENT WHO HAS GONE ON TO PLAY ON A COLLEGIATE AND/OR PROFESSIONAL LEVEL?
We will be having our second annual long drive competition fundraiser at the end of the season. If anyone is interested in making a donation, please contact me. We also have an annual fundraising golf tournament at Bernardo Heights Country Club in February. Again, if interested in participating, please contact me.
We have a couple. Eric Sugimoto was playing for UOP and has now transferred to USC. He was a big part of the team for all four years that he was here. Also, Todd Baek played for SDSU and has since become a professional golfer.
TELL US ABOUT THE COACHING STAFF AND WHAT THEY BRING TO THE TEAM. My assistant coach is Rocky Eddy, he is a very good golfer and is able to see things in the kids’ swing that I can’t. Without his coaching and knowledge, we would not be where we are today. My JV coach is Steve Howe and my assistant JV coach is Mike Ball.
DO YOU HAVE ANY CURRENT TEAM MEMBERS WHO WILL BE PLAYING AT THE NEXT LEVEL? Franklin Huang will continue to play golf at Stanford and Brandon Mai will continue at UCLA.
WHAT AWARDS/ACCOLADES/ RECOGNITION HAS THE TEAM GARNERED OVER THE YEARS? We placed second in CIF Division I for the past two years, and we won the Wildcat Invitational out at Menifee Lakes last year, and we successfully defended our title on April 4. We also had the individual winner there, Tai Negishi, who was also the individual winner for Palomar League at the North County Conference Tournament last year.

STRAWBERRY SERENADE Sweet Fun in the Sun by JESSICA WOODS | photos by Tyler McElhaney
S
trawberry season is here! This beloved red fruit is a favorite among San Diegans, served on plates and in recipes new and old. But for every recipe, you’ll want fresh strawberries to serve, and it doesn’t get much “fresher” than handpicked strawberries straight from the field. This season, grab your friends and family and head to one of San Diego’s strawberry farms, where you can pick as many berries as your strawberry heart desires. Driving north on the I-5, it’s hard to miss the vast strawberry field nestled in the hills of Carlsbad off Cannon Rd. This is home to The Carlsbad Strawberry Company, who invite groups as small as a couple to as large as school groups and organizations to come pick strawberries for themselves. Venture into the field with your friends and family for a lovely summer getaway. With groups of fifteen or more, they recommend you call ahead at 760-603-9608 for more information. The fields are open Monday through Friday, and picking is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit their website for farm stand locations and directions at www.carlsbadstrawberrycompany.com. Out east in Temecula is Kenny’s Strawberry Farm, where their strawberries are grown hydroponically. There’s no need to worry about dirt or mud, as the strawberries are elevated above the ground to where even small children can reach. The farm is open Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and you can visit their website to keep up-to-date with crop conditions at www.temeculavalleystrawberryfarms.com. ¢

Sport Clips Haircuts Specializes in Professional Haircuts in a Sports-Themed Environment by MICHELLE TREMBLAY
S
port Clips Haircuts was founded in 1993 with a mission to create a fun, relaxing championship haircut experience for boys and men. Since that time, the popular franchise has grown significantly, becoming a niche between family-style haircutters and full-service salons. Due to its quick success, the chain has been dubbed the “fastest growing brand in the hair care industry.” Terry Klinker, owner of the Sport Clips 4S Ranch location, elaborated on its success: “Sport Clips has become well entrenched in Southern California in the last seven years. There are currently seventeen locations in San Diego County, and that will grow to thirty stores in the next few years!” It was the year 2006, shortly after Terry had retired from his position as Director of Business Development and Director of Sales for a leading biotech firm, when he and his wife, Sue, decided to embark on a unique business venture: opening their first Sport Clips Haircuts store. Today, the businesssavvy couple own four Sport Clips stores across San Diego; and they are especially proud of the 4S Ranch location. “All the hair stylists had experience in the salon industry before starting their new career,” shared Terry.

The Store Manager, Christine Anderson, won the Southern California Manager of the Year for 2013, and other members of the 4S Ranch team have won multiple awards including, client retention, services, and kid’s cuts. So what can one expect from the Sport Clips experience? “The store is decorated in a ‘man cave’ fashion, with big screen TVs in the lobby and on the cutting floor,” described Terry. “The locker room atmosphere is enhanced with the baseball park murals

and other sports paraphernalia in the store.” But although the store – which is open every day and does not take appointments - attracts patrons for its fun, sports-themed environment, its services shouldn’t be overlooked. “Sport Clips Haircuts provides a high-end haircut experience for men and boys at a competitive price,” stated Terry. “Our hair stylists have many years of experience in the salon industry, and Sport Clips offers additional training on hair cutting techniques, using clippers, scissors, razors, and other professional tools to offer our clients the best, modern styles, as well as traditional styles and professional fades.” All clients can expect to receive the store’s signature MVP haircut experience, complete with a massaging shampoo, a classic hot towel treatment, and a neck and shoulder massage. “[We offer] some relaxing services to help relieve the stress of today’s fast-paced society,” Terry added. “Our stylists are passionate about men’s styles and have elected to step away from the full service salons to focus on their haircutting craft.” ¢

A Festival of Art
MARANATHA CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS FUSES ART WITH A CARNIVAL
L
ike many other schools, Maranatha Christian Schools (MCS) had an annual tradition of displaying the art of their students for family and friends to come see. But this year, the staff decided to break tradition and open the event to the community, throwing a carnival into the mix. On May 17, MCS will be holding their first ArtFest, a raucous event reminiscent of summer fairs complete with food trucks, carnival games, jumpies, live bands, artists, vendors and more. Student art will still be displayed in the gym and little artists can enjoy a sidewalk chalk section. On top of that, admission is free for all. “We have a growing, thriving arts program, and we want to celebrate it with our neighbors,” said Francine Good, Director of Development at MCS. “There is a misconception that art shows are stuffy and boring. We want to break that misconception by showcasing the excitement and joy of the arts.” The arts certainly run deep in the school, as one of MCS’s own 9th graders, Jessica Xu, even designed the logo for the festival. If you or your business are interested in sponsoring the event, head to www.maranathachristianschools.org/support_artfest.php for rates and contact information. ArtFest will last from 2 to 7 p.m. on May 17, located at 9050 Maranatha Drive in 92127. Keep a lookout for next year’s ArtFest as well. “Our gates have opened and this is the beginning of more exciting things to come!” said Francine. “We want this to be a spring destination event for families every year.” ¢

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
Real Estate Matters Worth the Effort by SCOTT VOAK
T
he real estate market is a mixed market right now. It’s not just the difference between the high end and the rest of the market, but we’re seeing homes of similar value achieve very different results when listed for sale. I took a look at activity in our area over the last ninety days and I focused on homes between $500K and $1M, largely because once you get over $1M market times are longer in general. Looking at that market (data from SANDICOR MLS as of 4/9/14) in 92127, the homes currently in escrow were on the market an average of twenty-three days while the unsold homes have been on an average of forty-nine days. The interesting thing? It wasn’t price that made the difference. The difference was marketing. I looked at all the homes that had been listed for at least thirty days and what I found was a lack of effort by the sellers and agents. Only 25% of the unsold homes used professional photography. As a seller, if you are listing a home anywhere in San Diego you should demand professional photography. It will cost your agent about $500. Yes, houses sell without it, but they take longer and they sell for less because you don’t get the same amount of traffic through a home when it looks bad online. As a seller, insist on it. An agent who doesn’t provide that service free of charge to you is underselling your home. Another major issue I found is a poor presentation of the home. This falls mostly on the home owner, but sometimes the agent contributes due to fear of losing the listing if they are honest with the seller. This relates to fixing up the home and staging it with new furniture. While the topic could fill several pages of this magazine, here are a couple of easy guidelines:
If it has been three years since you painted the inside of your home, paint it again; if your carpet is more than five years old, replace it; if you have throw rugs on top of hardwood floors, put them in the garage while you sell; no, fifteen-year-old furniture does not give a room “character”, and yes, your yard needs work. These steps are the equivalent of washing your car before you sell it. It will earn you three to five times the cost (some of which your agent will cover), and it is definitely worth the effort. ¢

imberly and Joel Callahan met six years ago when they were both teaching at one of the Fred Astaire Franchised Dance Studios. With their shared passion for dance and their motivation to open their own dance studio, they decided to make their dream come true. “We opened the Fred Astaire Dance Studio of Rancho Bernardo in December 2013. Our goal is to reach out to community members and invite them to come and dance with us. We want to bring back classic ballroom dance to all generations and educate the public on all the health and social benefits ballroom dancing has to offer,” explained Joel. The Fred Astaire Dance Studio of Rancho Bernardo welcomes students of all levels, from first-time dancers to those with years of experience. Students at the studio can learn a variety of American style smooth and rhythm dances such as the waltz, tango, foxtrot, East and West Coast Swing, salsa and Mambo. Conserve, Conserve, Conserve! by SUPERVISOR DAVE ROBERTS
The
vote by the San Diego County Water Authority’s Board of Directors in February was unanimous and the message was clear: conserve, conserve, conserve. Drought conditions in parts of California are as bad as they have been in a century. As the county’s representative to the Water Authority, I joined my colleagues from twenty-four member agencies in support of furthering conservation. The directors’ vote initiated the agency’s Water Shortage and Drought Response Plan to conserve as much stored water as possible so it can be made available where it is needed most. Last activated in 2007, the plan is designed to preserve the water held in storage and to minimize the impacts of supply challenges. The board also approved alerting all of its member agencies that the region is at Level 1 Drought Watch. That means that water district officials must identify specific actions necessary for their communities, such as repairing leaks quickly, limiting irrigation to the evening and early-morning hours and expanding use of recycled and non-potable water. As we lay plans to conserve, we can feel good about our track

record. San Diego County has reduced its water consumption by 27% since 2007, even though our population has increased. The Water Authority, to its credit, has greatly expanded the county’s storage capacity and has made capital investments and negotiated agreements to diversify the sources of our water portfolio. Since January, when I took over as the county’s water board representative, I have toured the Colorado River Aqueduct and the Sacramento/San Joaquin Bay Delta. Those trips drove home an important point: that most of the water we consume travels great distances, and at great cost, to reach us. And when water flows from our faucets, it’s no accident. To maintain our quality of life for our homes, businesses and farms, we must continue to diversify our supplies and to expand water recycling and reuse. And of course, conservation is key. To learn more about how to conserve water visit the Water Authority’s website at www.sdcwa.org. ¢ Dave Roberts represents the Third District on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors.

For the Love of Coffee
92128’S MOSTRA COFFEE TEAMS UP WITH ALESMITH BREWING CO.
C
ountless Rancho Bernardo residents jump out of bed in the morning and head for a nice steaming mug of coffee to help wake them up. Well, have you imagined a dash of coffee in a favorite beer? The folks at Rancho Bernardo’s Mostra Coffee and AleSmith Brewing Co. came together to create the Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee Speedway Stout brew, with the coffee ingredient described as “very balanced” and “chocolatey.” Jelynn Sophia, Co-Founder of Mostra Coffee, was excited to work with AleSmith to craft this unique brew. “We came up with a variety of different roast levels, then cupped each of them to find the perfect one that would work best in the beer,” she explained. “At the end of the day, they took our suggestion and decided to try something totally new, which was infusing cold brew coffee in the beer.” Their collaboration was truly a science and the outcome was great. Due to the success of this new stout, Mostra Coffee is hoping to branch out and collaborate with other businesses in the community. Jelynn hopes to find a retail location soon, but is happy to continue providing their specialty blends in their “pop-up coffee shops” around the community. Mostra Coffee holds a special place in their hearts for Rancho Bernardo. “Four out of five of Mostra’s owners went to Rancho Bernardo High School,” said Jelynn. “We all made our way back to our old 92127/92128 neighborhood and felt very strongly about giving back to the community that gave us so much!” Mostra Coffee can be found on Facebook (www.facebook.com/mostracoffee), Instagram (@official_mostracoffee),

:::: NIGHTHAWK INSIDER by JACKIE WIBOWO special to 92127 Magazine
What I Learned as a Nighthawk: In 445 Words
L
ess than two months and I’m graduating. Where has the time gone? I have to admit, looking back on my high school years, there are some cringe-worthy low points and embarrassing moments. But, there’s not one second that I regret. So, as I get ready to say goodbye, it’s nice to reflect and be on the opposite end, serving as the advice-giver who’s been through it all herself rather than the naive freshman clinging onto a senior’s every word.
1. From clubs, AP classes, to sports, Del Norte does have a lot to offer. But, don’t be tempted to overcommit. If there’s one thing I can’t stress enough, it’s the old cliche, “Quality over quantity”. Through these activities, you want to figure out where your interests lie, develop passions, and channel this energy into the community. Yes, college admissions can seem unpredictable, but admissions officers have read piles upon piles of applications. By now, they’re

pretty good at discerning a dedicated individual from someone who simply fills their resume with a plethora of random activities.
2. Staying on the college subject, do not let college admissions define you. Trust me, I had more than my fair share of hair-pulling and near heart attacks waiting for decisions, but a rejection does not mean the end of the world, and neither does an acceptance mean automatic success. Don’t apply to a billion colleges just because all your friends are applying to those same colleges. Thoroughly research the academic, social, and extracurricular aspects of a college. If you don’t see yourself there, why fork out another $60? Many college rankings only consider surface factors of a school - don’t make these the sole reasons for you to apply.
3. Relationships. Your best experiences will be based on this. The people who you hang out with should reflect the person you want to become. Explore different friend circles and activities, but
try to seek out the friends who share your goals and values. Don’t let academics be the sole focus of your high school life. Come to football games. Participate in spirit week. Go to dances. Also, stay close to your family! Your siblings and parents are those who have seen you at your worst, yet will always be there for you. Year after year, upperclassmen advised me on how to navigate through the turbulent journey that is high school. Their two cents definitely helped me pull through, but in the end, those tips became most meaningful once I experienced everything firsthand. So, go out there and accomplish things for yourself, and make your own mistakes. Be open-minded but focused, studious but social, practical yet spontaneous. Piece of cake, right? ¢ Jacqueline Wibowo is a senior at Del Norte High School. She has just completed her internship program with 92127 Magazine and can be contacted at info@92127magazine.com.

omen around San Diego gathered together for a week of discussion on health, finance, family and more. Throughout the week, speakers such as Tina Mickelson and Mimi Kirk spoke on balancing work with family and health, and Operation Ball Gown collected gently used gowns for donation to military wives who needed them. The week concluded with an Inspiration Conference held at the Harrah’s Rincon Casino and Resort. Attendees were treated to truly inspiring speeches from figures such as Kim Coles, Elizabeth Smart, Tanya Brown, Kimberly Dozier, Kristen Kavanaugh, Piper Kerman, and Suzanne Somers. Panels of admirable women discussed topics such as finding resilience in the workplace with “High Heels Through the Glass Ceiling” and reaching for higher goals in “Coffee With the Corner Office.” Visit www.sdwomensweek.com for a complete list of the speakers who were in attendance. ¢
