:::: FROM THE PUBLISHER

Vol. 6, No. 4 TM

Publisher Derrick Breaux

South of the Border has Evolved

I

went to high school and grew up in North San Diego County. Having moved from Texas, I thought that I had hit the jackpot. San Diego had the beaches, the mountains, the desert, SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, La Jolla, Los Angeles – all at our fingertips. But there was one other place that was also a gem, especially in my college years. It was Mexico! Long before the recent negative publicity that Mexico experienced, I was making regular trips south of the border. During spring breaks in Rosarito Beach there were more Americans walking the town than Mexicans. During other times of the year, it was not uncommon to make a last minute decision to head to Puerto Nuevo (commonly referred to as “Lobster Village”) for a day trip to feast on fresh Pacific lobster, warm tortillas, rice and beans, and cold beverages. We could be sitting at the table in about an hour and a half if driving from North County. For the more determined, Ensenada was also a very easy day trip. These were good times. Things were much more simple back then. When I met my wife Jessica in the ‘90s, I was introduced to a different part of Mexico. She had been making the trek down to San Felipe for nearly her entire life. Her father had built a home right on the beach in a remote area slightly south of San Felipe as a result of being involved in the Baja 1000 when he was younger. As Jessica and I began our life together and started making the regular trips to San Felipe, I started becoming part of many of her family’s “Mexico” traditions. Carpooling was encouraged – not necessarily for safety reasons; it was simply more fun. There were certain gas stations that you stopped at. There was a specific route that was taken, and a couple of restroom stops (always the same spots). If we were driving in a group, everyone tried to stay together on the five hour commute. When available, walkie-talkies were used (that always added an extra element to the trip). All of this culminated at the Derrick Breaux most anticipated stop of the day – downtown San Felipe, where the fish tacos, Publisher tortas, and ice cold beer signified that we were now on vacation. With full bellies, we would finish the last 30-minute leg of the drive and arrive at my father-in-law’s beautiful slice of beachfront paradise on the Sea of Cortez. Over the years, we have watched Mexico evolve. The horror stories that you see on the news or hear about from “friends of friends” don’t seem to have been a reality – at least in our parts of Mexico near San Diego. However, there is one reality – many Americans simply stopped going. Spring break is now just like any other week in San Felipe. You no longer see the packs of American teenagers and young adults partying at the hot spots and beaches. It’s slower paced. It’s quite peaceful. We recently went down to the house in San Felipe for spring break. It was a quiet trip. We stopped in town for fish tacos per tradition, then spent the next several days doing nothing. By doing nothing, what I mean is we spent our time relaxing, watching our kids play with their cousin nonstop from sunup to sundown in the sand on the beach. We fished. We cooked. We had happy hour – San Felipe style, of course. We were visited by friends from Del Sur. We played board games and cards after dinner (a few house favorites are Mexican Train, Drunk Mexican Poker, and Spoons). There were no moans and groans from the kids of being hungry or bored. In fact, we had to drag our kids to the table for dinner, at which time they consumed quantities of food that I had never seen them eat before. What 10-year-old kid eats four burritos at a single sitting? Once upon a time, the slower paced (let’s call it relaxing) experience wouldn’t have really worked for me. I’ve always been the type to be on the go. I didn’t completely understand the “sitting around” thing. Now I do. I suppose that means I’ve evolved as well.

YOUNG computer scientist STUDENT STAR VEERAN KERAI IS A BUDDING ENTREPRENEUR AND AMAZING ACHIEVER by KELLEY GUSICH | photos by Spark Photography

I

f anyone is proving that computer science is the wave of the future, it is Veeran Kerai. When he was only 12 years old, he had the opportunity to play around with various development environments. Later using the experience for creations he personally enjoyed, the results included advanced DJ software, Veekster DJ, and a fully featured web browser, Veekster Web8. He finally brought it all together into a complete operating system – Veekster OS. “Of course, I had no goals to go anywhere with it,” Veeran said, “but it was a great learning experience.” Veeran continued his education and by 15 knew eight different programming languages. He took a break from school and started developing a SaaS (Software as a Service) Application involving traffic generation. It did so well the business has recently been acquired by a large SaaS and mobile game company in the UK. He is now working on a startup company called Arion, which is a PaaS (Platform as a Service), in which he is investing his own money and trying to raise some

Dinner with Friends

SUPPORT THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES OF SAN DIEGO ON MAY 2 photos by EVGENY YOROBE PHOTOGRAPHY

M

att Teeter and Carlos Sanguinetti are proud to host the 4th Annual Dinner with Friends on May 2. The fundraising dinner and auction will benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego (RMHCSD) with a full dining experience, entertainment, live and silent auctions, and a wine grab. The evening will include appetizers, beverages, dinner, and desserts prepared by local chefs. Guests will also have the opportunity to learn more about the services the RMHCSD provides for families of children with serious illnesses or injuries. Some families must travel to have their children treated at Rady Children’s Hospital or other local hospitals, and RMHCSD gives them a place to stay, meals, and other amenities. The over-1,500 families served annually are welcome to stay for days, weeks, or months as needed. “Our third Dinner with Friends event was a resounding success and we were able to raise over $47,000 for the house,” explained Matt. “In 2015 we hope to grow even more. All the money raised at the event will go directly to the RMHCSD.” The event was originally inspired by Carlos’s diagnosis with cancer in 2009. After his recovery, he and Matt decided to find a new way to contribute to the community. It started with just one volunteer event later that year, and by 2012 they were hosting the inaugural Dinner with Friends. This year’s event will be held at the RMHCSD at 2929 Children’s Way from 5 to 9 p.m. Learn more, purchase tickets, or make a donation at www.thedinnerwithfriends.eventbrite.com. 

Verrazzano SIRIUS AND AMBER YOO CELEBRATE 10 YEARS AND A FULFILLING LIFE TOGETHER by LYDIA COBB | photo by Spark Photography

S

irius and Amber Yoo met through a friend at the University of Florida. Sirius was majoring in chemistry, and Amber’s focus was in business administration. When Amber walked through the door of the bar, Sirius remembers thinking, “I hope that’s her!” They were soon engaged. Their studies continued as Sirius graduated from University of Michigan Medical School and completed his residency at the University of Washington. He was awarded a fellowship in facial plastic surgery at Stanford. Amber graduated Beta Gamma Sigma with a Master’s in Business Administration from University of Florida. This spring is their 10th wedding anniversary. The Yoos moved to Verrazzano in Santa Luz as newlyweds. Their family includes a six-yearold Whippet named Hayden and a 13-year-old cat named Freckles. The Yoos discovered the neighborhood on an exploratory road trip. “The community’s Italian-inspired design is unique and tranquil with three parks, tree-lined streets, and lush landscaping,” shared Sirius. The Yoos own SKY Facial Plastic Surgery, located in 4S Ranch. Amber runs the practice. As surgeon, Dr. Sirius Yoo specializes in both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures of the head and neck, which include facelifts, rhinoplasty, laser procedures, and complex reconstruction of facial fractures.

Amber is on the board of the Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary as technology director. She’s also helping to raise funds for the first heart transplants at the hospital. With her love for animals, Amber annually supports the Helen Woodward Animal Center’s Spring Fling fundraiser. Sirius plays tennis and competes in USTA men’s leagues and runs the Safari Park Half Marathon. Amber loves reading and enjoys her book club. Together, they work out at LA Fitness. Freckles the cat likes to follow Amber around the house. Hayden the pup is more of a couch potato, but will chase balls endlessly at the dog park. “We love waking to the sound of birds chirping. We love watching the hot air balloons drift by in the afternoons,” added Sirius. A milestone is being celebrated by the Yoo family, who live, work, and play in a community that fills them with inspiration. 

Ten-10-Ten THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB 4S RANCH BRANCH CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF SERVICE

T

he 4S Ranch Branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego (BGCGSD) is proud to celebrate 10 years of serving the community’s children. The branch opened on Aug. 26, 2004, which was also the first day of school at neighboring Stone Ranch Elementary School. The community immediately welcomed the new branch, with 200 students and 100 parents showing up on the first day. “The branch has been blessed to have many staff provide outstanding service to children and their parents over the years,” said Danny Sherlock, BGCGSD President and CEO. “Our new branch manager, Emily Mitchell, has worked for the Club in several capacities and looks forward to continuing the tradition.” Over the years, the branch has added an aquatics center, a gymnasium, a smart board for the computer lab, and interactive games in the community room. Danny added, “The club has also responded to other needs identified by the community such as mandatory homework and exercise time, our Club K program for kindergarteners, and our Be A Hero anti-bullying program.” Danny also shared, “From a personal standpoint, it has been exciting to watch my granddaughters, Morgan and Carsen McKinney, learn how to play volleyball and basketball, respectively, at the 4S Ranch Branch.”

A number of community organizations have supported the 4S Ranch Branch, including the 4S Ranch-Del Sur Foundation and the Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo. In honor of the branch’s 10th anniversary, Strategic Partnership Director Tesha Young developed a special campaign to promote the club and allow local businesses to get involved. The Ten-10-Ten campaign consisted of three key components: celebrating the 10th anniversary, raising $10,000 in donations, and pledging members to complete 10 acts of kindness. The funds were raised in time for the final Little Jumps, Big Changes event: $1,000 from Geico, $1,000 from Children’s Physicians Medical Group, $3,000 from Garden Fresh, and a matching $5,000 from Elite Pediatric Dentistry. “We’re pleased with the tremendous amount of support from the community and excited to work with partners who believe in our mission,” said Tesha. The acts of kindness are an ongoing project for the rest of the year. Kind acts are group-organized or individually driven, and range from volunteering with seniors to reading to kindergarteners to making sack lunches for the homeless. “Everyone stepped up, everyone participated, and it was a lot of fun,” said Tesha. “It was a very successful campaign and I’m looking forward to something new for next year.” 

C

ommunity members of all ages jumped for joy at the final event of the Boys & Girls Club’s monthlong Little Jumps, Big Changes program. This is the fourth annual Little Jumps, Big Changes campaign, which raised $134,000 overall for the clubs. Events every week promoted active, healthy lifestyles for kids at the 4S Ranch Branch and other BGCGSD locations. For the final event, young members piled into the gym for an afternoon of games, jump roping, dancing, and celebrating. Community organizations and businesses set up booths with donated goodies for the kids, including members of the ZCode Media team, who set up a parfait bar with berries, granola, graham crackers, and yogurt. :::: COMMUNITY STUFF Local Students Learn Finance

Junior Achievement of San Diego County (JASDC), a nonprofit with the goal of educating children in financial literacy and entrepreneurship, recently hosted JA in a Day at Willow Grove Elementary School in 92127. Councilmember Mark Kersey and a number of local business professionals visited the school to lead lessons on a variety of career topics, from how money works to starting a business. “The students’ faces light up when a professional with a suit and tie comes into the classroom,” said JASDC Education Manager Jessica Saddler. Second grade teacher Lori Edelstein said, “The JA curriculum is introducing the students to money basics, putting them on the path toward financial literacy, which is so important in today’s competitive world.” A student in Mrs. Edelstein’s class, Ellie Carroll, shared her newfound appreciation for her parents’ efforts. “It’s hard paying taxes and starting a business,” said Ellie. “This work stuff makes me exhausted.” Learn more at www.jasandiego.org.

Girl Scouts Donate to Hospital

The young businesswomen of Daisy Girl Scout Troop 2344 were proud to exceed the sales goal they set for their first cookie sale season. The troop is made up of eight kindergartners from Del Sur Elementary School who are in their first year of scouting. “The girls received finance lessons and learned about how they can spend, save, and share money,” explained Troop Leader Sabina Szonn. After careful budgeting and deliberation, the scouts decided to donate $200 of the money earned from their cookie sales to Rady Children’s Hospital. They were excited to get the opportunity to present a giant, poster-sized check to a representative at the hospital. “We’re all very proud of what these girls accomplished and the lessons they are learning from this entire experience,” said Sabina. Learn more about the opportunities available to young San Diegans through Girl Scouts at www.sdgirlscouts.org.

North County Classic All Star Tourney

The 4S Ranch Rec basketball teams recently scored big at the 2015 North County Classic All Star Tourney, winning three out of the four age brackets. The tournament was held at Maranatha Christian Schools (MCS) and matched up local recreational leagues for 32 games in two days. All Star teams from 4S Ranch Rec, Rancho Bernardo Rec, Carmel Mountain/Sabre Springs Rec, and Poway Rec were proud to represent their leagues. Individual league championships had recently concluded, after which the All Star teams were selected. “Players and coaches took great pride in their local league and competed very hard,” shared Brooks Barnhard, the head coach of the MCS Varsity boys basketball team and owner of San Diego PBC. “The only real surprise is that 4S Ranch won three out of the four age brackets. In tourneys past, championships were spread out throughout the leagues.” Congratulations to the fifth grade, sixth grade, and seventh grade 4S Ranch teams!

PUSD Foundation Golf Classic

The Poway Unified School District (PUSD) Foundation’s 8th Annual Partners in Education Golf Classic will be held on Monday, May 4 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Resort and Spa. The games will begin with a shotgun start at 12 p.m., followed by a reception, dinner, and silent and live auctions. The Partners in Education Golf Classic is the foundation’s major annual fundraiser, and proceeds will fund ongoing support of programs across the district. These programs serve over 35,000 students in 39 schools throughout San Diego and Poway and help prepare students for college; advance science, technology, engineering, arts, and math skills; and support rigor, relevance, and relationships in every classroom. PUSD Foundation President Fred Pierce noted, “The annual golf classic also provides a perfect forum for community leaders to get together, to network, and to support a great cause. Our students are the future of our community.” The foundation is currently seeking sponsors, auction items, and golfers. For more information visit www.pusdfoundation.org or call 858-668-4041.

DNHS Science Olympiad Club

The Del Norte High School (DNHS) Science Olympiad team has had a successful season this year. The team placed fourth at the San Diego Regional Science Olympiad competition, which qualified them for the state tournament. Held in Anaheim in early April, the state tournament hosted 30 of the top teams from around the state. DNHS placed ninth. “I have to say that the entire process has been a huge team effort,” said Sean Lobo, a DNHS senior and president of the Science Olympiad Club. “No one person was responsible for everything.” The club is a student-run organization combining the talents of the students and their volunteer coaches and mentors. This year six teams of 15 DNHS students prepared throughout the year for 22 Science Olympiad events covering subjects from genetics to earth science to bridge building. One of the parent volunteers shared, “This momentum needs to continue, and we will see these students take our school to new heights in coming years.”

New Holiday Flags for Rancho Bernardo

Rancho Bernardo residents may have noticed a boost in patriotic displays around town, with more stars and stripes gracing local streets. The Rancho Bernardo Community Council (RBCC) recently implemented a brand new flag program. A grant from the office of Supervisor Dave Roberts provided resources for new holiday flags that the RBCC plans to use on the Rancho Bernardo Rd. medians during all future holidays. President Robin Kaufman and Vice President Patti Hall installed the flags for a test drive on Presidents’ Day. “Some passing motorists honked in support of the project,” shared Robin. “The Rancho Bernardo Community Council is looking forward to displaying many more on the medians for Memorial Day and other patriotic holidays.” The RBCC meets on the fourth Thursday of every month at the Rancho Bernardo Library. A group of local fourth graders from Westwood Elementary School and Chaparral Elementary School recently competed in a First Lego League robotics competition at Legoland. Team Sparks has been in operation for two years and was excited to continue proving their mechanical expertise. “The team has been practicing for six months to compete,” shared Jody Campillo, parent of two of the team members. “They meet weekly to design, build, program, and test the robots that they have made themselves.” The competition at Legoland featured over 100 teams competing to put their robots through a series of technical challenges. “It is absolutely amazing what these kids accomplish,” said Jody. “Our community is so very proud of these young minds!” Team members include 92127 residents Amelia Tamalunas, Collin Hotze, Hayley Thorpe, Head Coach Mike Thorpe, and Assistant Coach John Tamalunas.

The Poway Unified School District (PUSD) recently held the annual What I Wish My Parents Knew Parenting Forum at Rancho Bernardo High School. The forum was an opportunity for learning and conversation facilitated by PUSD high school principals and local leaders in the faith community, focused on helping parents support their children through the potentially difficult teenaged years. The program began with an opening session featuring a student-designed video, then continued with a series of seven workshops, of which parents could choose two to attend. Topics ranged from Handling Academic Pressure to Building Healthy Relationships. The event steering committee is composed of Rancho Bernardo High School Principal David LeMaster, Del Norte High School Principal Greg Mizel, Westview Church Pastor Jesse Winkler, The Gathering Place Pastor John Ettore, Former Poway High School Principal Scott Fisher, Community Leader Susie Berner, Westview High School Principal Todd Cassen, and PUSD Student Services Coordinator Traci Barker-Ball. Why You Love the 4S Ranch Library

The Friends of the 4S Ranch Library recently hosted the 2015 Why You Love Your Library Contest, allowing young patrons to express what the library meant to them. “Our libraries touch the lives of the people they serve every day,” explained Mary Karscig, founding president and publicity chair of the group. Library-goers from ages one to 16 wrote essays or drew pictures to enter the contest, and 15 winners were selected to receive prizes donated by Gepetto’s. Congratulations to all the young winners: Alan Cortez, Anika Parikh, Bella Watson, Caroline Juenger, Emily Atkins, Ethan Wolf, Hannah Im, Ishita Vasishtha, Kaitlyn Law, Kavya Gopinath, Olivia Watson, Rubina Tabassum, Sneha Kuppili, and Vikram Kuppili. The 92127 community came together to celebrate Chinese New Year at the 4S Ranch Library. The free cultural event was a fun way to kick off the Year of the Ram. Young students from All-Star Academy joined in to add to the afternoon’s festivities. Students performed the “Jasmine Flower” song, a Chinese folk dance routine, and a skit about the Chinese zodiac signs. A group of boys also gave a Kung Fu demonstration. After their performances, the All-Star students joined the community to watch performers from the San Diego Lucky Lion Dancers show off a traditional Chinese lion dance. They then got the chance to create and color their own lion masks. “The kids had so much fun showing off their hard work and there was an excellent turnout from the community,” shared Nina Hong, Executive Director of All-Star Academy.

Get ready for some colorful fun at the 5th Annual Chalk It Up! event. Presented by the Rancho Bernardo Community Council (RBCC), this sidewalk chalk art event is a great opportunity for families to explore their artistic sides. Just head to the Rancho Bernardo Community Park on Saturday, May 2 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The RBCC will supply each participant with a bucket of chalk. After participants have put the finishing touches on their masterpieces, they then return their bucket to the registration table in exchange for coupons valid for free items at local businesses. At the end of the day, the completed artwork will be judged. Prizes will be awarded for first through third place in elementary school, middle school, high school, adult, and senior categories, along with the overall winner. Participants can enjoy free coffee, bottled water, and cookies. For the fifth anniversary event the first 200 participants will also receive commemorative T-shirts.

New AEDs for Northeastern Division

Councilman Mark Kersey recently delivered 32 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) Northeastern Division, thanks to funding he authorized from the District Five Community Programs, Projects, and Services fund. With this donation the Northeastern Division became the first in the City to have an AED equipped in every patrol car. The division also has an AED in each of its storefronts and the main station. AEDs are used both to diagnose life-threatening cardiac events and restore normal heartbeats through defibrillation. “Every minute counts when it comes to sudden cardiac arrest,” said Kersey. “Police officers are oftentimes the first on the scene to an emergency, even before an ambulance, so having an AED can quite literally save lives.” Led by Police Captain Dawn Summers, the Northeastern Division covers the largest geographical area of any SDPD division, including the communities of Carmel Mountain Ranch, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, Sabre Springs, and Scripps Ranch.

ADVANCED HEARING SOLUTIONS IS THE COMMUNITY’S RESOURCE FOR HEARING LOSS

T

he simple act of hearing life’s daily sounds is often taken for granted. The grandchildren giggling, a conversation with a friend, a favorite song, talking on the phone – the loss of hearing impacts the quality of our lives and our relationships, often leading to feelings of isolation and insecurity. With today’s technology and an expert team of doctors and staff, restoring these sounds is possible. Advanced Hearing Solutions provides patients with a wide range of services to assist with hearing needs, including hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo, custom ear buds, ear molds, and much more. During their initial pressure-free consultation at Advanced Hearing Solutions, patients have an opportunity to get to know the staff and feel comfortable with the providers. “The first visit is about getting to know your situation and setting expectations,” explained

Stephanie Slali, Au.D. The initial consultation is free and helps eliminate patients’ concerns about taking this first step. This is just one of many reasons why Advanced Hearing Solutions receives so many new patients through referrals. “We provide patients with excellent, honest medical care and advice so they feel comfortable trusting us with their loved ones,” Dr. Slali noted. The experience and expertise of the doctors and staff contribute greatly to their reputation. What makes Advanced Hearing Solutions truly unique is the collaboration with the Ear, Nose, and Throat physician and staff at Rancho ENT. Dr. Wadhwa, a board certified Otolaryngologist, is located in the adjacent office and is available to provide medical or surgical consultation for hearing loss if needed. THINKING Student-Driven Learning at Design39Campus Reimagines the Possibilities of Education photos by SPARK PHOTOGRAPHY

A

s the school year draws to an end, the students and staff of the brand-new Design39Campus reflect on the school’s first year in operation. With the inspiring mission to change the way we do school Design39Campus has followed input from local educators, parents, and students to create a new set of guidelines to encourage academic exploration and achievement. After years of planning, the school opened in September to serve 840 students in preschool through sixth grade, with seventh grade to be added for the next school year. We chat with Principal Sonya Wrisley to discover how Design39Campus is transforming the way students learn in 92127.

Q&A with

Sonya Wrisley

What is your role at Design39Campus? How and when did you join the Design39Campus team? I am the principal at Design39Campus (D39C). I was appointed by our superintendent in April 2012. I left my assignment as principal of Oak Valley Middle School in June 2012 and worked at the district office for the 2012-13 school year. I then moved over to an empty classroom at Del Norte High School with a team of five teachers and my administrative assistant for the 2013-14 school year. What does your role entail on a day-today basis? I make sure our campus runs smoothly and that everyone is following our guiding principles. I also meet with parents on a regular basis. Particularly with The Collaborative, our parent group that is a blend of foundation and PTA. I also give tours to educator groups and our parents – we have had over 80 tours to date. Finally, I plan staff development for our staff to further our vision. Can you tell us a bit about yourself? Is there anything that might surprise people to learn about you? I have been a principal in the Poway Unified School District (PUSD) for 22 years. I started in 1993 as the principal of Canyon View Elementary, moved to Mesa Verde Middle School in 1998, opened up Oak Valley Middle School in 2005, and now I’m at D39C.

48 • 92127Magazine.com • May | June 2015

This may not be a surprise: I have wanted to be an educator since I was four years old and have never veered from that goal. What is the mission of Design39Campus? What makes the school stand out? Rather than a mission, we have eight guiding principles that drive our work: Design Thinking, Inquiry, Collaboration and Communication, Personalization, Growth Mindset, Technology, Creative Confidence, and Connect Globally. We make sure that all we do each day is filtered through these principles. These guiding principles make our school stand out in that our students are in complete charge of their learning.

WHAT IS DESIGN THINKING? Design thinking is a creative, solution-oriented method of approaching problems and questions. The approach encourages brainstorming and the concept is gaining popularity in the field of education, where it’s used to redesign school programs and encourage students to become creative critical thinkers.

:::: COVER FEATURE Students are able to progress at their own rate – and they are learning much faster than we had anticipated. Students are always encouraged to show their learning in a wide variety of ways that make sense to them. Our students are fascinated with learning and are eager to come to campus each day to learn. Can you tell me a little about the history of Design39Campus and the inspiration behind it? Five years ago our superintendent, Dr. John Collins, put out the challenge to “change the way we do school.” He wanted us to really think about what school is and what it can be. When I was given the chance to open Design39Campus I was given the permission to really try things in a different way. By working with John and his cabinet I was able to reimagine what a school might be. Then, working with teachers and parents, we began using design thinking to develop what has since become Design39Campus. Who were some of the key players in creating Design39Campus? Dr. John Collins was, and continues to be, a key player in creating D39C. Additionally, my initial team of five teachers who were released from the classroom for the 2013-14 school year were Kyle Asmus, Tom Downs, Kelly Eveleth, Bret Fitzpatrick, and Megan Power. My administrative assistant Karen Laing was also part of this design team. What ages does Design39Campus serve? Can you describe the grade level structure? We have preschool for four-year-olds and we go up to the sixth grade this year. Next year we will be TK-7 and the following year will be TK-8. Our grade level structures are: TK/K/1: Ten classes divided into two buildings with five teachers and about 125 students in each building. 2/3: Nine classes, with five in one building and four in the other. 4/5/6: Twelve classes, six in each building. We are structured in these grade spans to allow students the ability to progress at their own rate of learning and to access the appropriate level of learning.

Please tell us more about The Collaborative. Who is involved? Our Collaborative was developed through a Design Thinking workshop attended by over 80 parents. The main theme that was expressed was the desire for one parent organization rather than two separate organizations. After many months of diligent planning we now have our Collaborative, which serves roles traditionally served by PTAs and Foundations. How does Design39Campus prepare students for their future academically? First, we focus entirely on Common Core standards for math and English language arts and Next Generation Science standards. We report students’ progress based on these standards. By allowing our students to progress at their own rate we are finding students are far exceeding what we had expected. Our challenge is staying ahead of the students in our planning of learning experiences. As a public school in PUSD, we are held to the same standard as all of our schools in preparing our students academically. What is the most rewarding aspect of your role at Design39Campus? The most challenging? The most rewarding aspect is to see our students so excited, engaged, and fascinated with learning every day! Each time I walk through classrooms on my own or with a tour, our students are so excited to share what they are doing and learning. I am thrilled that our students are so happy. The most challenging aspect is helping people understand what Design39Campus is all about. Since we do things in such a different way we have opened up tours for our current parents so that they can understand what their students are describing to them when they come home. This is not a school like we all attended, so we need to help people understand what we are doing and why it is working so well for students. How do students get along with the teachers at Design39Campus? I think the great thing about PUSD is that all of our teachers have great relationships with students, no matter which school we are at. The biggest difference for D39C is that Learning Experience Designers (teachers) have learned to become more

of facilitators for the students. Our LEDs know what standards need to be covered by the students, so they have the job of finding exciting ways for the students to learn those standards. Then they allow the students to have choices in how they learn. What are some highlights of students’ time at this school? We have many flexible learning spaces at D39C: traditional classrooms, double classrooms, makeries, and collaboratories. With these various spaces, students are able to move around to work where they need. For example they can work on their laptops or tablets in classrooms, work with groups of students in collaboratories, or work in makeries when they need to create or design something. Are there any memorable moments you’d like to share? Every day is memorable, walking through classrooms to see students so excited about what they are learning. What are some unique classes and opportunities that students can enjoy? All of our students have the opportunity to take Deep Dive and Explorations classes. These classes are based on our students’ passions and interests. They suggest ideas for things they would like to learn, and if enough other students also want to learn about the same thing, a class is born. Examples of these classes are marine biology, line art, ceramics, community garden, mixed media arts, 3D animation, fashion design, Project Lead the Way, technology and engineering, furniture design, coding and programming, design thinking challenges, videography, news shows, and more. These classes are provided for all students, kindergarten through sixth grade. What opportunities are there for community members to volunteer or otherwise become involved with the school? We have a multitude of opportunities for volunteering in our classrooms! We have community members who have gone through the PUSD volunteer clearance process co-teaching classes on “finding your genius,” fashion design, 3D animation, and world languages. Additionally, we have had 15 facilitators from Intuit leading our 4/5/6 students in a design thinking process.

We also welcome guest speakers and presenters at D39C. Are there any other exciting news or updates about Design39Campus that you’d like the community to know about? Recently in Atlanta I was proud to represent Design39Campus as we received the National School Board Association’s “20 to Watch” award. Here is an excerpt from the press release: This year’s ‘20 to Watch’ honorees highlight the kind of exciting innovations that exist throughout America’s public schools. These teachers and administrators, with support from their school boards, share a vision for learning that will prepare students for future success,” said Thomas J. Gentzel, NSBA’s Executive Director. “These inspirational pioneers are having a positive impact on the districts they serve.” A common goal among honorees is their desire to embrace tools that help them engage each student in the joy of learning; willingness to mentor colleagues; and an understanding that lasting change requires a degree of risk-taking, said Ann Flynn, NSBA’s Director of Education Technology. “Their accomplishments serve as examples that can inform local, district, and state approaches to education technology decisions in the future. After Atlanta I flew to Washington, D.C. to join D39C LEDs Stacey Lamb and Patrick Dela Cruz. Together we were participants in the Convergence Pioneer Bootcamp, focused on re-imagining education. Design39Campus was invited to join this bootcamp of 150 educators and foundations from around the United States. We had two days to “build a national community of pioneers committed to integrating the vision of their ongoing work and to working together to transform education.” It was exhilarating to be in the midst of so many other pioneers who are taking on this challenge of changing education for our students. Design39Campus is proud to be part of this exciting national project as we continue to provide fascinating learning experiences for all children. 

:::: FROM THE DENTIST

THE BEST SMILE FOR YOUR CHILD Choosing a dentist for your child is no small task. Your child deserves the best smile that modern technology has to offer. While most modern offices have TVs over dental chairs and fun playrooms to let your child know it’s a kid-friendly place, there are other attributes to look for to ensure your child’s office delivers the best care around. Is the office dentist a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists? Dentists typically undergo four years of training after college.

Pediatric dentists attain a specialty degree over the course of an additional two to three years of residency. Children’s teeth aren’t just small versions of big teeth, so understanding growth and development is critical. Treatment choices also affect the adult teeth coming in. Pediatric specialist offices use the latest child-specific techniques and materials that make the process not only more comfortable for your child but also better customized for young needs. Look for an office with a board certified doctor. This designation has even more distinction amongst specialized pediatric dentists. It means they have completed rigorous oral and written tests, keeping up with the most current research on a yearly basis. Most importantly, make sure you feel comfortable with the staff and doctor. PREVENTING VASCULAR DISEASE DR. ALEXANDER CHANG IS DEVOTED TO THE VASCULAR CARE FOUNDATION by LINDA FRABL | photo by Spark Photography

I

f we had the ability to look into a magic crystal ball and foresee a major catastrophe in the future, we would most likely do everything in our power to prevent that disaster from occurring. Del Sur resident Dr. Alexander Chang may not have a magic crystal ball, but he does have the medical training that enables him to prevent one type of catastrophic disaster: vascular disease. As a board member for the Vascular Care Foundation, Alexander feels it is his duty to increase the public’s knowledge of vascular disease and help reduce its dire consequences by encouraging early detection via screenings. As Alexander explained, “Most people don’t know that they have vascular disease until they have had something very serious happen [e.g., a stroke, gangrene of the leg, a problem with an aneurysm of a blood vessel, etc.]. But most of these processes can be treated safely and easily before catastrophic events happen; we just need to know about them. This is why screening is so important.” With 95% of its donations being used to promote vascular disease education and screening efforts, the Vascular Care Foundation is committed to helping reduce the grim national statistics: that nearly 600,000 people die annually from vascular Name: Community: Volunteer Affiliation: Profession: Family: Hobbies:

disease. Alexander maintained, “This number does not need to be so high! Vascular disease is a very prevalent problem, and unfortunately we see patients in the late stages of the disease which are harder to treat. The primary goals of the Vascular Care Foundation are to increase awareness and to provide an avenue for patients to be screened to improve their outcomes.” As a vascular surgeon, Alexander devotes the majority of his free time working on behalf of the Vascular Board Foundation, but he still manages to indulge himself in some pleasurable pursuits. Alexander professed, “I enjoy the San Diego weather, especially while playing golf. My wife and I also love eating out, and we’re always trying out new restaurants in the area.” As a newlywed, Alexander shared that he and his wife are expecting their first child later this year. Because he is such a thoughtful, caring, and hard-working advocate for those with vascular disease, Alexander will surely apply those same compassionate qualities toward his growing family. 

SANITY-SAVING

TIPS FOR MOM by SRAVANTHI TRIPURANENI, M.D.; Scripps Clinic, Rancho Bernardo

Moms become expert jugglers – housecleaning, feeding the baby, working, carpooling, playing chauffeur. Wearing all these hats can make everyday life hectic. Fortunately there are ways to stay calm, sane, and stress-free in the midst of normal family chaos. Short of building a futuristic robot that does everything from cooking and cleaning to making sure the kids get to school, these nine tips should help.

Drink plenty of water. Mild dehydration can affect your body before you realize you are thirsty. Lack of water can cause headaches, fatigue, and lack of energy.

Stay away from those golden cream-filled sponge cakes. When you’re tired and hungry it’s easy to reach for unhealthy snacks. Keep up your energy by trying to eat something every two to four hours and selecting nutritious snacks, such as string cheese, fruit, and cut-up veggies. Eating foods with low nutritional value will only add to your stress and mood swings.

Get out of the house. Even if you are exhausted, go outside for a rejuvenating walk because fresh air and exercise can help put everything in perspective.

Let out your creative self. Create something each day, even if it is just a doodle. This will help you stay connected to yourself.

Laugh. Whether giggling or guffawing, laughter is good for you and your family. Laughter reduces your stress by increasing the endorphins to your brain and relaxing your muscles. It should be easy to find humor in the antics of your little ones.

Be grateful. Try writing down three things every day for which you are thankful. Having an attitude of gratitude provides perspective and brings you to the present.

Take time for yourself. Understand that you most likely won’t finish everything on your “To Do” list – ever. So take time each day to do whatever you like. Some moms wake up before the family to read and enjoy a cup of uninterrupted coffee or tea. You may choose to carve out some time to meditate, take a bath, or simply listen to music. Make sure your family understands that this is “mommy’s time.”

Play with your kids. Have some stress relievers you can do with your children, such as drawing, blowing bubbles, dancing, and playing with pets. Stroking the cat, feeding hay to the bunny, playing catch at the park with the dog, or even watching fish glide in an aquarium can reduce stress and can also teach your children to care for others. Raising a family has its challenges, but learning to relax and giving up the idea of perfection will let you and your children enjoy the ride, bumps and all. 

Ask for support. Don’t be afraid to reach out to others for support, even if that is as simple as calling a friend or checking out a blog. Arrange for a babysitting swap with friends or ask a trusted family member to watch the little ones while you exercise or get some sleep.

C

lutter. It’s the bane of many homeowners. And it seems just as the clutter has been cleared, more clutter arrives to take its place. Tailored Living has been helping area homeowners rediscover their homes and fall in love with them all over again. “Clutter gets in our way of seeing our homes for all they can be,” said owner Dana Nuesca. “We can help you get a handle on your clutter and beautify your home too.” Getting started is the most difficult part. So Dana recommends starting with small tasks such as a corner or a drawer. “One task that has helped others is Toss 50, which means a homeowner will discard or recycle 50 items throughout the house during one week’s time,” offered Dana. “Get rid of broken items, discouraging items, and things that don’t work. They’re just dragging you down.” Once you clear up the clutter, know what you’re keeping and have a pretty good idea of where you’re going to keep it, Tailored Living will visit your home and design a storage solution just for you. “It’s not helpful to purchase a cookie cutter storage solution,” said Dana. “Tailored Living uses space design software so we can create a number of storage solutions and review them with the homeowners to make sure the chosen design meets their specific needs.” She added, “Once homeowners cut through the clutter, they can see the inherent beauty in their homes.” Tailored Living of North County San Diego featuring PremierGarage began operation in 2014 and is owned and operated by Escondido residents Kalani and Dana Nuesca. The company proudly serves homeowners and businesses from all over North County, offering storage solutions for garages, closets, pantries, mudrooms, home offices, and even guest rooms through complimentary in-home estimates and consultations, professional measuring, and installation. E

lite Pediatric Dentistry was the first pediatric dental practice in 4S Ranch and has been providing dental care to children in the community for over two years now. Under the care of Dr. Femme Ambrosio and her team, the practice strives to provide extraordinary care for every patient, every day. “The practice has grown considerably since I first started,” said Dr. Ambrosio. “Our team is committed to improving, maintaining, and growing ourselves for the benefit of the children we see.” According to Dr. Ambrosio, a board certified pediatric dentist, having a boutique practice allows her the time necessary to ensure that children and parents have a positive experience and the best possible care. The office encourages open communication and takes the time to explain prevention plans, treatment and procedure options, and finances. Dr. Ambrosio understands that each child is

unique and must be treated as such. “These visits can be overwhelming and we hope that getting to know each child individually will help in their overall care.” It is the friendly and compassionate team at Elite Pediatric Dentistry that truly sets the practice apart. Dr. Ambrosio has worked in various pediatric dental offices throughout the country and learned a great deal from each experience. When she decided to open her own practice, she and her team not only had the knowledge but also the skill set and personality to provide for their patients. “From the moment a parent calls to schedule an appointment to the time a family walks out the door they are treated with care,” said Dr. Ambrosio. Dr. Ambrosio is a native San Diegan, wife, and mother, all of which she feels serve her well in her practice. Dr. Ambrosio is a mother to Bennett (4), Amelie (3) and Camdyn (1). “It has always been a goal of mine to not only support the oral health of our patients, but to also be a part of the community our children grow up in,”

“It is the friendly and compassionate staff at Elite Pediatric Dentistry that truly sets the practice apart.”

4S Ranch Team

A

ARSENAL FC SAN DIEGO GIRLS GU10 WINS 2015 STATE CUP

rsenal FC San Diego, a club soccer team located in 4S Ranch, recently won its first State Championship. Competing in the President’s Division of the annual State Cup tournament, the Girls Under 10 Elite team competed against the top 43 teams in southern California. The team, coached by Jose Ocampo, first came to the North County community of 4S Ranch in 2013. The team includes players from 4S Ranch, Carlsbad, Escondido, and Scripps Ranch. The annual tournament began with group play at the Southern California Sports Complex in Oceanside during the weekend of Feb. 7 and 8. The top teams advanced to the next round of play during the weekend of Feb. 14 and 15 in San Juan Capistrano. The semi-finals were held the next week with the winners advancing to meet in the final game in San Bernardino to determine the state champion. Arsenal FC GU10 Elite played Strikers FC from Orange County and emerged victorious to win the club’s first ever state championship. “I knew this team was special and headed towards a championship early in the season,” said Ocampo. “The girls are a talented bunch, and they have worked hard this season to get to this place.” The final game was tense and competitive. At the end of regulation, the score was tied 1-1, and a 10-minute overtime failed to determine a winner. Per Cal South rules, the game went into penalty kicks with Arsenal FC San Diego scoring four PKs to Strikers’ three. The players who earned this title include Allie Anderson, Nicole Anderson, Esha Gupta, Payton Jenkins, Molly McCarthy, Maquena O’Callaghan, Eva Schreiber, Catherine Schreiber, Emily Separovich, and Maggie Taitano. Congratulations! 

or 26 years, Country Montessori School (CMS) has encouraged local students to explore, achieve, and develop into lifelong learners. As a full member school of the American Montessori Society (AMS), CMS is able to provide the individualized, comprehensive curriculum that allows students to thrive. “CMS develops intellectual, responsible, caring members of the community and world,” shared Adela Corrales, Head of School. She oversees daily operations at the school, which is a nonprofit organization governed by a parent/teacher board of directors. The school serves students from preschool through fifth grade and provides a broad, creative curriculum. Classes include music, Spanish, art instruction, physical education, and computer lab sessions. “The key Montessori philosophy is fostering children’s enthusiasm for learning,” explained Adela. “Therefore, Montessori curriculum must incorporate fun with academics.” Montessori learning materials are designed to invite discovery and grow with the child, containing multiple levels of challenge that can be used repeatedly. “We are a collaborative community where older students serve as role models for our younger students,” said Adela. “Students are

a part of a community, not just a school. We believe in educating the whole child: intellectual, physical, emotional, and social.” The small class sizes and team-teaching approach help students feel comfortable and engaged with their teachers and classmates. Elementary classes have just ten students per teacher, and preschool or early childhood development classes have just twelve students per teacher. Each classroom is led by two to four credentialed teachers, all of whom are AMS-trained and certified. “This allows students to draw from the strengths of multiple teachers instead of one, and allows the teachers to create a more comprehensive analysis of each child’s educational growth,” said Adela. The campus itself is constantly upgrading and adapting to suit the growing needs of the student community. A new elementary building, shade structures, and artificial turf are a few of the recent improvements. The entire community can look forward to participating in the Montessori mission with the upcoming Spring Fling. The students of CMS will showcase their hard work and talent with a music and movement program on May 3 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. 

WISH SPA OFFERS CLIENTS INTEGRATED MEDICINE IN A RELAXING SPA ENVIRONMENT by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos by Tyler McElhaney

ISH Spa is a unique wellness center that offers biofeedback therapy, ThetaHealing, acupuncture, massage, and skin care services under one roof. The spa also has a full array of services specifically designed for headache sufferers. Galina Kislukhin, owner of WISH Spa, has personal experience with chronic pain from headaches and is thrilled to help others find relief. “WISH Spa is the result of my own healing journey. I have been a chronic migraine sufferer for many years, and I was not able to find the relief I was looking for in traditional Western medicine. When I turned to integrated holistic medicine, I found not only relief but healing. Once I was able to take control of my headaches I wanted to share this solution with everyone else who is suffering,” explained Kislukhin. WISH Spa has six treatment rooms, each fully equipped for each service offered at the spa. Kislukhin and her staff provide a nurturing environment for their clients with individualized healing approaches. “Many of our clients come to WISH Spa on a regular basis, some for stress relief massages and others for a weekly therapeutic combination treatment, such as the acupuncture-massage-biofeedback package,” stated Kislukhin. In addition the spa provides individualized programs for clients seeking fertility treatments. According to Kislukhin, any of the services offered at WISH Spa can be combined into a specialized package designed specifically for the needs of each client. WISH Spa is also introducing a new program for clients suffering from chronic headaches. Headache Boot Camp is a nine-week, drug-free program based on the latest headache research and designed to eliminate headaches and reduce the use of what is often called rescue medication. “Our methods are drug- and side effect-free; however they do require commitment and dedication to a headache-free life. We did our best to include things that are not too difficult to commit to, but also are very likely to help relieve chronic headaches if followed closely,” said Kislukhin. The program includes weekly group discussions and lectures, individual therapy sessions, acupuncture, biofeedback therapy, ThetaHealing,

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH

Real Estate Matters

How Long Should it Take to Sell my Home? by SCOTT VOAK

I

f you are planning on selling, how long should you expect your home to be on the market, and is there an advantage to selling fast versus taking more time? The average time on the market for detached homes is between 40 to 50 days depending on where in San Diego you are. Attached homes average 30 to 40 days. The median time on the market is 10 to 15 days less than the average time in most areas. This is due to the few “stale” houses that are overpriced and sit on the market for six months or more. Their long market times affect the average but aren’t really a true reflection of the market. Starting from these averages you need to take into account your home, your goals, and the marketing you will do. If you live in a subdivision with a lot of similar homes, yours is in good shape with no obvious issues, and you are priced competitively, you should sell faster than average. If your home is more unique or in the higher price ranges, expect to take longer. Is there a problem with homes that take too long to sell or sell too quickly? Yes. In both cases. If your home goes into escrow in less than a week, it’s great for your agent, not so good for you. Seven days is not enough time to expose the home to the market, start showing it and then counter offers to get to the highest price possible. If your home sells in two days, even if it’s for over asking price, you left money on the table.

Conversely, if you put your home on the market with professional photos and video and it is advertised in the right places, you should get showing traffic. If you get a lot of showings but no offers, there is something at the house that bothers people. Find out what it is. If you don’t get any showings, the specs and photos of the house don’t justify your asking price. Make an adjustment sooner rather than later to increase traffic and avoid being one of those stale listings. 

he 4S Ranch Little League Opening Day kicked off the season with a celebration to remember at Hidden Valley Field. Teams marched under the balloon archway and across the field to show off their bright new uniforms and even brighter team spirit. From the four- and five-year-old Little Sluggers to the 12- and 13-year-old Juniors to the proud coaches and parents, every participant enjoyed the day’s beautiful weather. This season’s Opening Day was also the league’s 10th anniversary celebration. Volunteers helped out throughout the day by hanging bunting, setting up the field, guiding the teams once everything was underway, and clearing it all up at the end. The league gave special thanks to ceremony guests Brian Wilson, Max Power, Sam Utter, Drew Howell, and the Rancho Santa Fe Firefighters. 

Ethics. Integrity. Results. We had a unique situation going into the process of selling our home and felt there was a low likelihood that our ideal scenario would come to fruition. But with Anne on the case - the seemingly impossible was achieved! Through Anne's amazing networking and marketing skills she found the perfect buyers for our home and it was a win-win for both sides! With Anne representing us, the entire experience from start to finish was incredibly smooth and painless. She was on top of everything, did a fantastic job of communicating progress and was truly our counselor, confidant and friend through the entire process. We knew we were in good hands and our interests were Anne's top priority. Anne is warm, a consummate professional and nothing short of fantastic! We would highly recommend her to everyone!

:::: NIGHTHAWK INSIDER

by BEN FRIEDL special to 92127 Magazine

End of an Era

W

hile walking the hallways of Del Norte High School of late, I have noticed an escalating atmosphere of excitement across our campus. This upbeat vibe is not the usual pent-up excitement for summer vacation but undoubtedly represents the 435 members of the class of 2015 approaching the end of their high school careers. As we reach this milestone, the class of 2015 can breathe a collective sigh and confidently say that we performed to the best of our abilities. Through hard work and diligence, we leave a legacy of excellence and have solidified our reputation as a group

of students who are kind and supportive of the rest of the Del Norte student body. Our class proved to be smart, hardworking, and caring – establishing a precedent that paves the way for all Nighthawks to continue to soar. We’ve been through a lot together over the past four years. However, as of June 11 we will leave the safety of our nest and enter “the real world,” which is both terrifying and exciting at the same time. In other words, guys, it’s time to fly. Finally, this article will be my last as the Del Norte Nighthawk Insider. I am incredibly proud and humbled to have represented my

high school in this important role and am thankful to ZCode Media for giving me this opportunity. And thank you Del Norte High School for shaping me into the person I am today – as I close the end of one chapter, I’m excited to see what the future will hold for all of us. Wherever your path may lead, remember where you came from and always Flock On. 

he Del Sur Educational Foundation (DSEF) brought the rest of the community along for an island-style vacation right here in 92127 for their annual Night at the Ranch fundraiser. The Del Sur Ranch House was all decked out for the Havana Nights-themed event. Guests came dressed in their tropical whites and dashing fedoras to dance the night away. Casino tables, live and silent auctions, delicious food, libations, and musical entertainment offered something for everyone. Proceeds from the event directly benefited Del Sur Elementary School’s art, music, and Impact teacher salaries and programs, as well as technology purchases and upgrades.
