About...

“When I was young I would play with Barbies for hours. I used to enjoy creating the perfect settings for imaginary interactions. Years later after the birth of my beautiful daughter, Estella, I began creating elaborate themed birthday parties and thought about the idea of creating a “dollhouse”...I realized that true passions never fade, they just get bigger. I hired the best contractors to transform a warehouse into a 16 mini-room dollhouse. Each room is the perfect setting for endless photo shoots and events!”

Household Fiscal Year?

W

Derrick Breaux Publisher

hile many businesses use a calendar year for convenient accounting purposes, I’ve come to realize that the vast majority of people actually run their homes similar to a fiscal year basis. Sure, everyone likes to gear up and prepare for the big symbolic New Year celebration, but for most families, Jan. 1 merely marks the halfway point on the annual journey of household responsibility and schedules. Shouldn’t there be a big prize waiting for each of us when we finish the year? A calendar year ending in December doesn’t seem very exciting. Kids go back to school in January – certainly no prize for most of them. Tax season is looming right after the beginning of the new calendar year. Again, not very exciting for most of us. Although technically a new year, everyone is typically still quite involved with trying to get through their fiscal year. What I mean by this is that the end of the year for most families seems to take place in June. That’s right… June is officially the end of our household fiscal year. June is when kids finish school – in fact, many kids graduate or get promoted to the next grade. It is the month that moms and dads are typically limping through the finish line donating their final volunteer hours in the classrooms (I have to admit that I’ve read a few hilarious postings about this in some of my recent social media binges). Spring sports are finishing up. The gift of warm weather is upon us. Summer must be the end-of-year prize! Although we are spoiled in San Diego and blessed with beautiful weather year round, I still love summer. Summer brings freedom for kids – I’m sure some parents may argue that it can also bring boredom. Summer is a time for family vacations, trips to the beach, outside barbeques, walks with the dog, playing outside until sunset, and creating lifelong memories. For my daughter who recently graduated from high school, summer is a time of transition. It marks the end of a huge chapter in her life and the beginning of the rest of her adult life. The start of her new household fiscal year comes with unlimited promise, excitement, uncertainty, exploration, dedication, and nervousness – all wrapped up into a couple of months. Perhaps we should all rethink the traditional New Year celebration concept. What we should all really be celebrating is a Year “End” party (in June). I see the Year End celebration as a festive event where adults get to congratulate each other for actually making it through the year in one piece. The occasion should include high fives, hugs, toasts, and perhaps, some type of victory dance. I definitely think that we might be on to something here. I hope everyone has a great summer!

A Compassionate Traveler Savannah Tennes is On a Mission to Help Others by LINDA FRABL | photo by Spark Photography

N

ot many teenage girls are as industriously charitable as Savannah Tennes, a 15-year-old 92127 resident who attends The Hotchkiss School, an esteemed Connecticut-based boarding school. On her own she successfully organized a drive to collect beauty supplies for active duty deployed female personnel, dubbed, “Operation Courage is Beautiful,” and she is now organizing a drive to benefit expectant military family mothers, dubbed, “Operation Shower.” Savannah is currently securing potential retailers that are willing to display collection boxes, which may prompt her to rename the drive, “Operation Red, White and Coo.” If it seems Savannah has a knack for coming up with clever ideas and titles, it shouldn’t be surprising that she wrote a play that was selected to be in the One Act Play Competition. Scrambling to handle everything involved in that process, Savannah revealed, “I have held auditions, selected my actors and am currently in charge of directing and managing technical aspects during rehearsals, such as costumes and lighting.”

Naturally a favorite school subject for Savannah is humanities, and she admitted, “I love writing and reading the classics and modern works.” She wants to ultimately obtain a joint degree in architecture and psychology, in order to hopefully “design a structure that would appeal to people from the inside and out.” She also intends to continue traveling and “visit many more countries when I grow older.” Savannah will begin by embarking on an important traveling mission this summer, which will combine her love of new environments with her love of philanthropy. She elaborated, “I like helping others, specifically children, so I will be volunteering at the GoVap Orphanage in Vietnam, which is in an area where napalm was intensively dropped during the Vietnam War. I am inspired by seeing smiles from children, and I’m inspired by the many volunteers at orphanages, particularly the ones housing children with special needs.” In those rare moments when Savannah is at her ~ SAVANNAH home base in the Rancho Bernardo section of 92127, she indulges in the area’s offerings. She proclaimed, “It is a safe community and I like the variety of retail stores and restaurants. You can get anything from books to pets to a latte.” Even though she appreciates her North County surroundings, something tells us that Savannah’s compassionate-natured wanderlust instincts won’t keep her in one spot for too long! ¢

92127’s Future Problem Solvers

STUDENTS PLACE HIGH IN FUTURE PROBLEM SOLVING CONTEST

W

hen finding solutions to world problems, it’s sometimes refreshing to see a child’s perspective on how solutions can be reached. In the Future Problem Solving competition, a scenario is given to individual students or teams of four. They have two hours to complete a booklet about the Future Scene, deciphering the underlying problem and sixteen ways to solve that problem, write five criteria by which to judge their solutions, and draft a persuasive essay on their best solution. Nancy Myles, a Future Problem Solving coach, explained that the challenge was land transportation and the scenario was Beijing, China in the year 2038, “where the traffic congestion is overwhelming.” Students from 92127 brainstomed ideas to improve the flow of traffic, such as having separate roads for trucks, public transportation, building more smart cars, or underground and sky roads. At the State championships, Turtleback Elementary School (TES) 4th graders Sofia Benito, Keelan Williams, Christianne Bernhardt, and Noah Romag placed fourth out of seventeen teams. Benjamin Chose and Victor Vavara, 6th graders from Oak Valley Middle School, placed second and third in Junior Individuals. Hailey Bunsold, a TES 5th grader, joined an Alternates team and placed third in her division. A long time volunteer coach for the program, Nancy Myles also expressed that she was glad to see that a former TES 5th grader, Jenny Chen, who now attends high school in La Jolla, continued to the International level in Iowa this past June. ¢

rom the time they both attended St. Michael’s Elementary School to graduating together at St. Augustine High School, Carlos Sanguinetti and Matt Teeter grew up as close friends. For a while, they went their separate ways. Matt finished his MBA at the University of Colorado at Boulder and returned home to work at the family business. He and his wife, Jen, fell in love with Del Sur and decided to make it home. Carlos and his wife Shana had been living in Chula Vista when they decided to make 4S Ranch their home. They discovered their close proximities when a shared love for soccer brought the families together. In June of 2009, Carlos was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He has since made a full recovery, but the experience caused both friends to re-evaluate. “We both shared the same vision of helping others that were in need,” Matt said. They became fundraisers for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego (RMHCSD), which provides a "home away from home" for families with children being treated for serious, and often life-threatening conditions. Carlos had heard good things about RMHCSD, and he wanted the families to assist at one of their dinner services. In September of 2009, Carlos and Shana organized their first volunteer event for this deserving charity. “We had the pleasure of serving these deserving families dinner for one night,” he shared. “It was an incredibly rewarding opportunity and everyone involved had a great experience.” That event was just the beginning. Carlos and Matt started by organizing a couple of dinners per year for RMHCSD. They were eventually inspired to create their own charitable event, with the singular goal of providing awareness and fundraising to the amazing families, volunteers, and children who make the RMHCSD so special. The inaugural Dinner With Friends event was held on March 7, 2012, and raised over $8,000. The 2nd annual dinner raised over $19,000 and the 3rd annual event, held just this past March, raised over $47,000! Carlos and Matt feel the sky is the limit, and while they operate on a zero budget, the entire dinner – from auction items to entertainment, prizes, tents, tables and chairs – are donated by their excellent sponsors. Their goal for 2015 is $100,000. The duo confided, “We simply could not do this event without the help of our wonderful friends, family and colleagues in 92127 and San Diego County.” ¢

tone Ranch Elementary School’s Fun Run was a rousing success. “We raised a little over $21,000 which will be used to fund student programs such as Art Corps, Fall Festival, Character Counts, Red Ribbon Week, Debate Club, the Sweetheart Family Dance and the International Fair,” shared Donna Clopine, President of the Stone Ranch PTA. Over 1,200 students tugged on their sneakers and ran for their school. Classes were encouraged to raise donations beforehand, and Ms. Morshead’s 2nd grade class won a pizza party for the highest donation total at $540. Donna wanted to express thanks to their event sponsors as well. “Our platinum sponsors were Wendy’s, Elite Pediatric Dentistry, Mathnasium 4S Ranch, and Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontic Specialists.” ¢

or the Wells family, moving to San Diego was quite an adventure and a bit of a leap of faith. “We moved to Sycamore Walk in April 2011 from Charleston, SC. We actually moved here sight unseen after driving across the country with our newborn son, Koby, and our Chocolate Lab. Brad had recently joined the Navy, and my best friend of nineteen years lived in the neighborhood. I recognized her address while browsing Craigslist,” revealed Tori. She and her best friend, who is a Marine wife, have given tremendous support for one another when their husbands are deployed. And Tori is quick to point out that having her best friend next door made the transition from Charleston to San Diego much easier.

Both Tori and Brad are originally from Savannah, GA. “We attended the same middle and high school. We began dating after catching up at a back-to-school party at Georgia Southern University during my sophomore year and Brad’s freshman year,” said Tori. After graduation, they moved to Columbia, SC to attend the University of South Carolina, where Brad earned a Doctorate in physical therapy and Tori earned a Master’s degree in speech pathology. Currently, Brad is serving in the United States Navy as a physical therapist and is stationed on Coronado. Tori works as a part-time speech pathologist for North County Speech and Language, where she provides speech services for school-aged children. Over the last several years, Tori and Brad have made many friends in 4S Ranch and have added to their family. “Jake turned 1 in January. He and Koby love to play at the YMCA and other local parks. They also enjoy the children’s ministry at church,” stated Tori. The family attends Elevate Church in Carmel Valley, where Tori serves on the children’s ministry team and Brad volunteers each week to assist with equipment set-up. According to Tori, Brad surfs every weekend, and she and the boys love hanging out at the beach, watching the marine life and soaking up the San Diego sunshine. The family is also a big fan of local cuisine, eating nearly every Saturday at Lupe’s, a small-family owned Mexican restaurant in Poway. Overall, Tori and Brad are incredibly thankful to have the opportunity to experience San Diego and 4S Ranch. “It’s such a family-friendly place, and we love the beautiful scenery and the fun outdoor activities,” related Tori. ¢

MCS AND MRES WELCOME NEW ADMINISTRATORS MARANATHA CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS: Steve Whitley, Athletic Director

MONTEREY RIDGE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Sal Embry, Principal

Steve Whitley is excited to be heading the Maranatha Christian Schools (MCS) athletic program as their new athletic director. Steve has more than thirty years of baseball coaching experience, including several years in MLB funded, NCAA sanctioned collegiate summer leagues. He has also coached at various high schools and colleges around San Diego and scouted for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Steve explained that his goal is to “help steer the program away from a school that simply ‘offers CIF sports’ into a school that develops athletes for a higher level of play.” MCS currently offers football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, track, and baseball, and Steve expressed that his long term goals include adding golf and tennis programs, and restoring the MCS softball team.

Monterey Ridge Elementary School (MRES) welcomes Sal Embry as their new principal. Sal has been a part of the Poway Unified School District since 1988. From 1988 to 1996, he taught elementary school and in 1998 became principal at Midland Elementary, followed by Sundance Elementary, and for the past six years has been principal at Painted Rock Elementary. Sal Embry earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies from Point Loma Nazarene University, and his Master of Arts degree in Educational Administration from National University. Sal is enthusiastic to join MRES as it has, “an outstanding reputation as an innovative school with strong community support. I look forward to working with staff, students, and parents to continue the great work being done there. I’m very excited to meet everyone in the coming weeks.” ¢

Using a meat tenderizer, pound the chicken. If you don’t have a meat tenderizer, you can poke holes in the chicken with a fork. Place chicken in a bowl with a lid or a large Ziploc bag. Add the Tabasco sauce, salt, pepper, garlic, lemon juice and cumin. Cover it with the lid or zip closed, shake it really well, then place in the refrigerator for 2 to 4 hours. Grill chicken until thoroughly cooked. You can cook it in a pan as well, just add a little bit of olive oil so it doesn’t stick to the pan. Once cooked, cut chicken into small pieces. On a griddle or frying pan, warm tortillas, place cheese on half of the tortilla, add some chicken, fold it in half and then flip it. Remove from griddle/frying pan once the cheese is melted. Serve with sour cream and guacamole. Makes: 6 – 8 servings Total Time: 30 minutes

New and Uncharted Territory

TAKE A LOOK AT THE NEW NORTH SAN DIEGO BUSINESS CHAMBER

A

name change is often symbolic of a fresh start, casting off the old in favor of the new and uncharted. The San Diego North Chamber of Commerce has officially changed their name, creating a new identity while still maintaining the same level of service and commitment that their reputation upholds. Presenting to northern San Diego, the new and improved North San Diego Business Chamber. According to North San Diego Business Chamber President and CEO Debra Rosen, the old name and logo “no longer defined our membership and was not representative of the area we serve.” Their goal was to create a name that reflected the larger geographic area that encompasses their members, from down near Interstate 8 to the northern border of Murietta. With their new logo of two figures with open arms, the Chamber wants to welcome new professionals and provide the stability and comradery that they seek. Working in tandem with Bottom Line Marketing (BLM), utilizing surveys from both

members and non-members, the Chamber was able to understand not only who they were as an entity, but what minor changes were needed. One of those changes was becoming the “only Accredited U.S. Chamber in San Diego County.” With accreditation, chamber members can rest assured that their membership fees are going towards providing assistance for their business, connecting with partners, and being a valid voice in a “fastgrowing business community.”

The North San Diego Business Chamber may have changed in name and face, but it’s size and spirit is promised to be just as unique as before. “As a team, we’re compassionate and approachable to all our members… Most importantly, we are relevant to our members.” ¢

Caring for Community Readers

ZCODE MAGAZINES HONORED AS SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR

A

ssemblymember Brian Maienschein recently honored us here at ZCode Magazines as the 77th Assembly District’s 2014 Small Business of the Year in recognition of our ongoing commitment to the readers of our community. “ZCode Magazines has found an innovative way to bring people in our community together by showcasing local businesses, events, and residents,” Maienschein said. “I’m proud to recognize ZCode for creating a fun, community-based publication that San Diegans enjoy reading, while helping local small businesses promote themselves.” Launched in 2009, we started with one publication, 92127 Magazine, a reference to the zip code where the magazine was distributed. Since then we have grown to become the publisher of eleven zip code-specific magazines, reaching 185,000 San Diegans. Each magazine highlights unique local businesses, families, students, sports, and community events. ZCode Magazines also provides advice to local businesses on community outreach using social media, email, and custom publishing.

“On behalf of all of us at ZCode Magazines, we are honored to be selected by Assemblymember Maienschein to receive the Small Business of the Year Award,” said Derrick Breaux, Publisher and CEO of ZCode Magazines. “We work hard to serve our readers and the community that we love, and we wouldn’t be successful without them.” A family business, Breaux’s brother, Tyler McElhaney, serves as creative director and COO for our publishing company, located in the Rancho Bernardo area of San Diego. “Maintaining a balance of high quality design and production along with hyper-local stories and features is our biggest goal. Employing local writers, photographers, designers and sales staff reinforces our commitment to the communities of San Diego,” explained McElhaney. Each year, the California Small Business Association asks legislators to nominate a Small Business of the Year from their district that has demonstrated exemplary business ethics and community service. We were presented with a framed certificate from the State Assembly recognizing our outstanding contributions. ¢

GIVING THE GIFT OF MUSIC

Olivia Donald Shares Her Gift and Passion for Music by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photo by Spark Photography

Y

ou would never know it, but Olivia Donald has otosclerosis – a condition in the ears that can result in hearing loss; and, as a result, had once worn hearing aides in both ears. This piece of information is quite ironic considering that Olivia has such an “ear for music.” Olivia started playing piano at age 7, and then went on to receive her Bachelors of Music degree in piano performance and music education from the University of Oregon, and her Masters of Music degree in piano performance from The Boston Conservatory. Today, Olivia is owner of a San Diego music school called, Sing, Move, and Play Music Academy. As she continues to expand her business she also volunteers with Westwood Elementary’s Music Program in an effort to not only share her gift of music with others, but to help them embrace their inner-musician as well. “My children attended school at Westwood, and I wanted to have my children attend a school with a music program, so I offered to teach it,” said Olivia of her decision to become involved with the program. “I teach Transitional Kindergarten through 4th grade classes. This year I have had twenty-three classes take music. Each grade level signs up for a music session that lasts from five to ten weeks. During their session the classes come once a week to music.” Olivia has been with the program for just a short while, but is already seeing the impact it has made on the kids. “I have only been volunteering at Westwood for the past two and a half years, but I do have several students that take 5th grade band and continue on to band in middle school,” she shared. Admitting that she wishes the school district would employ a full-time, paid music specialist on campus, Olivia is happy to help out where she can. “Music plays such an important role in children’s lives and development,” said Olivia. “Waiting until 5th grade to have music in the schools is missing a huge window of learning opportunities with these children.” She added, “I want to create strong musicians instilled with a love who will enjoy music throughout their entire lives.” ¢ Name: Community: Volunteer Affiliations: Profession: Family: Hobbies:

A reception, dinner, and silent and live auction immediately followed the round of golf. A total of eighty golfers attended this event which raised over $50,000 for students and programs in PUSD. Both PUSD Superintendent John Collins and PUSD Foundation President Fred Pierce attended the event along with local business and community leaders. Fred Pierce said, “Our annual golf classic is the primary fundraiser for the PUSD Foundation. The Bernardo Heights Country Club (BHCC) has unveiled a membership for active military personnel and their families. “We wanted to create a membership category exclusively for active duty personnel who love to play golf and want a true country club experience that also satisfies the military’s need for flexibility, all at a very affordable price,” said Charley Crew, Chair of the membership committee. Military members, their spouses and children can enjoy unlimited golfing and full social privileges. The initiation fee paid will be waived and monthly dues will be discounted by 40% from what regular members pay. Military members may elect to stop paying dues when they are deployed out of the area and can reactivate their memberships upon return to San Diego. Their memberships can stay active while on deployment if their family members want to continue using the club. For information on BHCC head to www.bhcc.net.

Among these were 92127’s own Del Sur and Stone Ranch Elementary Schools. “I applaud these strong, thriving schools that are making such impressive strides in preparing their students for continued success,” Torlakson said. “This award is welldeserved by these school communities for their enduring dedication to high standards, hard work, and unwavering support.” The 2014 California Distinguished Schools Program focuses on California’s students’ right to an equitable and rigorous education, and recognizes those schools that have made progress in narrowing the academic achievement gap.

Hometown Hero

Eileen Kaufman was astounded when her daughter, Robin, a well-known figure in Rancho Bernardo, called her after the RB Hall of Fame Gala to casually tell her that she had saved a life. Patti Hall was Robin’s guest at the gala and had begun to choke on her food. Robin quickly and calmly went behind her and performed the Heimlich maneuver until the food was dislodged. Robin said, “I have to say, I’m one of those you want to have around in any sort of emergency as I don’t get worked up. I always stay calm and don’t make a big deal out of things.” Since saving Patti’s life, Robin is calling for more residents to participate in CPR and AED training in the community. Eileen shared that Robin’s goal is to teach over 1,000 residents this life-saving skill by end of this year.

THE INSIDE LOOK AT 92127’S “BIGGER” RESIDENTS photos by Tyler McElhaney

Y

ou see their structures peeking over the hills. You drive by them unnoticingly on your way to the store. The Rancho Bernardo Industrial Park is home to many popular names, such as HP, Sharp Rees-Stealy, and Soitec to name a few. What most folks may not know is how close they are to their own homes. Our rather larger neighbors contribute greatly to the local economy: providing jobs for residents, making donations to our schools and community, and staying on the verge of cutting-edge technology.

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY What is now today’s Industrial Park was once an undeveloped lot, where only the first sprouts of industry were taking root in 1968. Among the first occupants were the National Cash Register Corp., Colony Kitchens, and Union Oil, to name a few. By 1969, HewlettPackard and Garrett MicroCircuits Corp. planted their flags, paving the way for growth in the 70s and beyond. Read along to get just a taste of the few businesses in the area who have made a difference these past decades.

Q&A

CAN YOU GIVE US A BRIEF HISTORY OF HP’S OFFICE IN RANCHO BERNARDO? HP was the first occupant of the technology park in Rancho Bernardo back in 1968. HP had acquired Mosley, a Los Angelesbased company that made strip chart recorders (think of a roll of chart paper that used to track things like EKG results with a ball point pen), and subsequently moved the organization to San Diego. Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard, HP’s founders, leveraged this technology to ensure that customers buying HP’s electronic measurement equipment could record their output. This technology ultimately led to the development of felt tip pen plotters, which were used for things like architectural drawings and engineering schematics – the paper moved back and forth and the pen worked its magic. Since then, the first color inkjet printer was developed right here in Rancho Bernardo, as was the world’s largest inkjet production

printers (think of the kind of printer that prints your newspaper or this very magazine). HOW HAS HP CONTRIBUTED TO THE LOCAL ECONOMY? HP is an active member of the North San Diego Business Chamber. And, HP’s Rancho Bernardo employees and employee groups are active in many community outreach programs, including educational activities like a local robotics club and things like Habitat for Humanity. WHAT OTHER CONTRIBUTIONS HAS HP PROVIDED FOR 92127? HP employees are actively involved in the local community, participating at school events and hosting innovation events on campus. We also are focused on being good neighbors – HP’s Rancho Bernardo site has over 6,000 solar panels, which significantly reduce the site’s carbon dioxide emissions.

WHAT EXCITING EVENTS OR ANNOUNCEMENTS ARE COMING UP FOR HP? HP continues to focus having a meaningful impact on people. As such, HP has just announced the newest additions to its consumer computing line up, which focus on giving customers the performance and mobility they want and need. The HP Envy x360 and HP Pavilion x360 both enable customers to switch easily from a notebook to a stand, tent or tablet, while the HP Chromebook enables customers to quickly connect to their favorite websites, online music and videos – plus tens of thousands of apps in the Chrome Web Store. On the printing side, HP continues to extend its line-up of Instant Ink capable printers with its recent launch of the OfficeJet Pro 8610, 8620 and 8630. With each of these printers customers can choose to sign up for Instant Ink, HP’s ink replacement service, which lets customers save up to

Q&A CAN YOU GIVE US A BRIEF HISTORY OF SOITEC’S OFFICE IN RANCHO BERNARDO? When searching for possible locations to establish a North American presence more than three years ago, Soitec focused on the Pacific Southwest region. Soitec’s decision to locate its North American Manufacturing Headquarters in San Diego, Rancho Bernardo specifically, was a result of a strong economic development campaign and culture of collaboration led by many San Diego government and community leaders including CleanTECH San Diego, the San Diego Regional EDC and the City of San Diego. The location in Rancho Bernardo provided access to a highly skilled tech workforce which is necessary for the production of Soitec’s fifth generation Concentrator Photovoltaic (CPV) modules and is located near customers to provide the most cost-efficient and environmentally

beneficial green power. In December 2011, Soitec acquired a 176,000 square foot manufacturing center on 14.8 acres of land located in Rancho Bernardo to support over 300 megawatts (MW) of well advanced solar projects throughout San Diego and Imperial Counties. Upon completion of the purchase of the building, the new North American Manufacturing Facility was dedicated at an onsite ceremony that was attended by notable Soitec supporters including Governor Jerry Brown, former Mayor Jerry Sanders, and former SDG&E CEO Jessie J. Knight, Jr. among many others. In less than one year from the dedication ceremony, Soitec completed an extensive upgrade of the facilities to install fully automated manufacturing equipment and processes. Soitec began commercial operation in October 2011 and held a Grand Opening Ceremony for the factory in December of 2012. The first CPV module produced in Rancho Bernardo was shipped in February 2013. Soitec reached

280MW of annual production capacity in July 2013, making it the third largest solar panel manufacturer in the U.S. Today the factory continues to produce CPV modules for utility scale solar projects using Soitec CPV technology both locally and globally. WHAT IS THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THIS LOCATION? Soitec’s Rancho Bernardo factory produces the company’s fifth generation of CPV modules based on Soitec’s Concentrix technology – the Soitec CX-M500. This locally produced technology is two to three times more efficient than conventional solar panels and converts sunlight directly into “clean” electricity via concentrator optics and high-efficiency solar cells. HOW HAS SOITEC CONTRIBUTED TO THE LOCAL ECONOMY? The factory represents a $200 million investment by Soitec in the local economy, resulting in $25 million in annual California state sales tax revenue, an estimated $22 million in annual employment taxes, and hundreds of direct and indirect jobs.

WHAT OTHER CONTRIBUTIONS HAS SOITEC PROVIDED FOR 92127? Soitec has helped reduce local energy usage at the factory by utilizing electricity produced by a Soitec CPV solar module tracker. Additionally, Soitec hosts an annual Health and Wellness Expo at the factory for local vendors and companies to promote healthy living with employees. WHAT EXCITING EVENTS OR ANNOUNCEMENTS ARE COMING UP FOR SOITEC? Recently, Soitec announced having achieved a new world record for the conversion of sunlight into electricity using a new solar cell entering the efficiency roadmap at a world class level and a new world record efficiency of 44.7%, the highest ever recorded for a photovoltaic device. This indicates that 44.7% of the sun’s energy over the light spectrum from ultraviolet through to the infrared is converted into electrical energy. This is a major step towards reducing further the costs of solar electricity and continues to pave the way to the 50% efficiency mark.

DID YOU KNOW? • Soitec’s North American Manufacturing Headquarters currently employs 220 highly skilled onsite workers and at full production expects to employ 450 while providing an economic impact of more than 1,000 indirect jobs. • Soitec’s facility is 176,000 square feet. • They just achieved a new world record for the conversion of sunlight into electricity: 44.7% conversion, the highest ever recorded for a photovoltaic device. 50 • 92127Magazine.com • July | August 2014

PETCO

Coming soon to 10850 Via Frontera This Industrial Park is about to get a new neighbor, and they’re bringing some four-legged friends along too. Petco recently announced that they acquired property for a new headquarters at 10850 Via Frontera (for those who may not know, that’s right next door to us at ZCode Media!). Lisa Stark, Manager of Corporate Communications for Petco, expressed that the purpose of the new office is to consolidate the employees from four separate support hubs around San Diego and put them under one roof. This includes over 650 of “Petco partners” breaking in the new 300,000 square-foot facility once construction is complete. “As our vision for healthier pets, happier people and a better world grows, so does our company,” said Jim Myers, Chief Executive Officer

at Petco. “We now have a tremendous opportunity to intentionally design a central campus that reflects our values and showcases what we can achieve with the Power of Together.” The plan is to extensively remodel the existing site beginning fall of this year, to be completed in full by fall 2015. It’s no surprise either that this new support center will be an “open, inviting environment” and pet-friendly, meaning employees are encouraged to bring their pets to work. “Petco has long been a major local employer in San Diego and supports a wide range of philanthropic and recreational activities in the area,” said San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer. “We’re thrilled they’ve renewed their commitment to the city and are creating an innovative workspace that will enhance the wellness of their employees and our community.”

Garden S TRANSFORM your

BED

by TORI MORRISON

ummer emerges each year with a bright and sunny entrance. Here in San Diego we wait in anticipation for that final school bell, or for the skies to open up for a relaxing day at the beach. Once beach weather settles in it’s pretty difficult to stay motivated, however why not mix it up this summer with a do-it-yourself-project in your garden? There’s plenty of crafty ideas out there for raised vegetable boxes, and with their versatility it’s easy to turn a garden bed into a piece of artwork. You can even put your summer seashell collecting to good use and style the beds with beach-sytle decor. Here are some ideas to get you started.

CORRUGATED METAL BED

STONE-LINED BED

For a cool, industrial look, cut eight panels of corrugated metal to size and lay them out so that they cross over each other by two inches. Begin at one end of the panels and start attaching them panel to panel by drilling three evenly spaced holes down each seam so that it goes through both panels. Using a rivet gun, place a rivet in each of the holes. Next, rivet the final seam. Place support rods on the outside of the beds and pound them into the ground until they are at an even level with the top of the bed. To make a bottom, cut pieces of hardware cloth to fit inside the bed. Next, place them in the bed so they overlap and curve up the sides.

Create a raised bed in a frame that sits on the surface of the soil. Use stones, rocks, bricks, or shells as accent pieces. In this case ensure that the soil is properly mounded as it forms part of the landscape of the bed. When you dig, clear the soil and then use a sharp, square-bladed spade to break up it up. Next, change to a round-pointed shovel for evening out the surface.

WATER TROUGH For those who aren’t so handy with tools, there’s always the option of purchasing a galvanized water trough and drilling holes at the bottom for drainage. Place rocks in between the holes and the soil to create some room and an additional layer to catch water. 

“ The thing I like the most is that I’m not just a number. When I walk in, the staff knows who I am. Also, I can reach and be reached by e-mail, which is very convenient and more personal.” ~Juliana, NCCU customer since 2005

People Helping People North County Credit Union Provides Personal Service and Modern Banking Conveniences by AMY LEHRER | photos by Tyler McElhaney

O

riginally established in 1953, North County Credit Union (NCCU) became a Community Charter Credit Union in 1986 so that it could expand its financial services to anyone living or working in North County. Benefits to becoming a NCCU member are threefold. First, NCCU is local. NCCU Representatives who live in the community, participate in community events. Loan approvals and other key decisions are made locally by people who live in the community, have face-to-face relationships with their members, and understand local needs. Because of this personal knowledge, NCCU is often able to approve loans that “big banks” would reject. In the case of credit unions, control ultimately rests with its members, who are also member-owners. Additionally, members know their savings help their own community members attain their financial goals. Second, as a not-for-profit cooperative, NCCU helps its members save money. Branch Manager Yvonne Despie revealed, “NCCU representatives are rewarded for finding members the best deal, not for making record profits.” In general, credit unions charge lower fees, offer higher savings rates, which allows

56 • 92127Magazine.com • July | August 2014

money to grow faster, and lower rates on loans, which means the overall cost for loans diminishes. Datatrac, a financial research and technology firm, regularly publishes credit union and bank interest rate comparisons that reveal the savings NCCU members can enjoy. All savings are insured up to $250,000 by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, and some retirement accounts are insured to an additional $250,000. And to help its members make the smartest financial decisions to reach their financial goals, NCCU regularly offers free educational seminars on identity theft, first time home buying, retirement planning, college funding and a variety of investment topics. Third, NCCU provides great personal service and “big bank” services. A NCCU customer since 2005, Juliana shared, “The thing I like the most is that I’m not just a number. When I walk in, the staff knows who I am. Also, I can reach and be reached by e-mail, which is very convenient and more personal.” Friendly representatives help members enjoy “big bank” services including financial planning services, investment funds, managed accounts, insurance products, online banking and bill pay services, mobile and text banking and even a personal financial management system to help

members budget and save money at over 18,000 different financial institutions. Soon, NCCU’s new website will be launched as well. It will contain more financial education content and provide an optimal viewing experience for multiple devices from mobile phones to desktop computer monitors. Ultimately, the credit union philosophy is people helping people meet their financial goals. 

:::: IN OUR OWN BACKYARD

COASTAL

CURIOSITY Point Loma's Beautiful Landmarks and Nature by JESSICA WOODS | photos by Tyler McElhaney

W

e're deep into summer: the sun is bright, the sand is soft, and the ocean is so inviting. For what remains of your summer break, take a day to explore Point Loma, offering historical landmarks, tide pools, awe-inspiring cliffs and hiking trails.

The Old Point Loma Lighthouse takes you back in time to when sailing ships relied on these beacons to guide them through safe waters. Built in 1854, its light could be seen for twenty-five miles. However, the builders didn’t take into account the signature low fog that would obscure the light, and so in 1891, the lighthouse was closed and a new Point Loma lighthouse was constructed at a lower elevation. The old lighthouse has now been converted into a museum, where you can explore what life was like there and see the old lamp whose large beam once permeated the peninsula. Below the lighthouses are a series of silent sentinels collectively known as Fort Rosecrans. The Point Loma peninsula shapes a natural barrier at the entrance of San Diego Bay, and in 1899 the United States Department of War built a series of gun batteries into the cliffs as a strategic harbor defense. While you can’t

58 • 92127Magazine.com • July | August 2014

enter the batteries themselves today, you can walk alongside these massive strongholds. Whale-watching is popular here, but head to the tide pools to see the tinier creatures that make homes on our shores. Sea stars, mussels, crabs, and other gastropods come and go with the tides. While fun to look at, rangers warn not to touch the animals, as many of them are sensitive and can be harmed or killed from being handled by humans. The tide pools are parallel to the Coastal Tidepool Trail, and more hiking can be explored on the two-mile Bayside Trail. For history hounds, the Cabrillo National Monument offers a closer look at the first explorer to land on the United States’ western shores, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. With a large statue to commemorate his exploration, the park also features annual reenactments of his landing. ¢

Meeting Community Needs

THE 4S RANCH~DEL SUR COMMUNITY FOUNDATION BESTOWS GRANTS

uch like a family, a community looks after one another and sees to the necessities of those who need it most. The 4S Ranch~Del Sur Community Foundation held their 7th Annual Grant Awards Celebration and bestowed over $25,000 to local organizations around 92127. These organizations not only help encourage civic leadership and volunteerism within the community, but also provide for the arts, culture and technology for the next generation. The grant recipients included the 3D Design and Model Program at Oak Valley Middle School (OVMS), 4S-Tech-Zone program at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego, Del Norte High School (DNHS) Choirs – Leadership through Musical Excellence program at DNHS, the Helping Hands program at OVMS, JA Job Shadow in Technology Fields program at Junior Achievement of San Diego County, and the Monarch TV program at Monterey Ridge Educational Foundation. “We’re honored to present the 4S Ranch~Del Sur Community Foundation grants to these outstanding organizations,” said 4S Ranch~Del Sur Community Foundation Grants Chair Judy Simeroth. “Our focus this year was to build community leadership and involvement, while meeting a timely need for a technology or arts and culture need. The grantee programs demonstrate how local organizations are tackling these issues in a variety of ways.” The ultimate goal of the 4S Ranch~Del Sur Community Foundation is to leverage small resources to have a great impact. :::: REAL ESTATE WATCH

Real Estate Matters Smart Buyers’ Biggest Mistake by SCOTT VOAK

I

have written about this before, but it is worth revisiting since it has been a couple of years. Home prices in the 92127 zip code are above average for San Diego and a part of that is due to the quality of the school district. The higher prices and quality schools tend to bring us buyers who value education and have the income to support the higher purchase prices. This typically means buyers for homes in our area tend to be pretty smart, and due to the employers in the area, a lot of them are engineers. Being a reformed engineer myself, I understand how they think, and they are continuing to make the same mistake when purchasing a home. I see the drive among a certain set of buyers (described above) to get the best possible price on a home. They will come in without an agent, present a low offer, and take the position that if this seller doesn’t accept an offer, another one will. At one time Donald Trump wrote, “The profit in real estate is created when it is purchased. It is only realized when it is sold.” Many buyers have this idea in their head and are missing the bigger point of residential real estate: it is far more important when you buy than it is that you get a good price when you buy. Simple example: if you purchased a home in 2007 or 2008 and bought it for a 4% discount, you are still trying to get back to break even. You did a great job at the wrong time. On the other hand, if you purchased in December of 2012 and paid 4% over market, you have about a 15 to 20% profit, even

though you made a “bad” purchase at the time. Buyers who are waiting to save a couple of percentage points instead of just getting into a good home, are losing dollars chasing pennies. ¢

H2O for Life

DEL SUR ELEMENTARY GETS CLEAN WATER FOR KENYAN SCHOOL

“D

id you know that every twenty seconds a child dies from lack of access to clean water?” Margaret Epperson, 5th grade teacher at Del Sur Elementary School (DSES), shared this detail when introducing H2O for Life. She explained that this organization partners with U.S. schools to pair up with schools in developing countries, specifically those in need of clean water, sanitation and hygiene education. Margaret has spent the past year inspiring her students to be involved, ever since her mission trip to Kenya in 2013. Having memories of staying in Siaya, Kenya, where clean water was a twenty minute walk from where she stayed, she thought of what she could do to help and was introduced to H2O for Life. Margaret’s 5th grade class collectively raised over $4,000. All proceeds were donated to the Lusigetti Primary School in Kenya.

Students recycled water bottles and used gallon jugs to collect loose change, even donating money from Christmases, birthdays, and the tooth fairy. Margaret revealed that their funds helped build a rain catchment tank for the Lusigetti school. Leo Zimmer, 5th grader, said “It felt amazing doing this project because all you have do is recycle old plastic bottles, and who knows, you might help save a person’s life!” DSES Principal Mr. Johnson proclaimed, “I am thrilled to see that as a school we have banded together in such a way to raise over $4,000 to care for a community in Kenya that is over 10,000 miles from our home. We are excited to continue to expand this project next year.” If your school is interested in partnering with H2O for Life visit www.h2oforlifeschools.org or contact Margaret Epperson at mepperson@powayusd.com for tips on getting started. ¢

spring weekend in 92127 wouldn’t be complete without a softball game or two. This past May, the 4S Ranch All-Star teams participated in the Scripps Ranch Softball Association All-Star Tournament. The tournament welcomed over fifty teams in eight playing divisions from Scripps Ranch, Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Rancho San Diego, West Grove, Las Vegas and more. Spread out over fields across Scripps Ranch, the teams battled each other for dominance in each of their age divisions, including 4S Ranch’s All-Star girls. They gave a fantastic fight to the final rounds, with the 4S Ranch 10U Force team finishing in second place. The overall winning teams from each division hailed from West Grove, Santee, and Rancho San Diego. ¢

DNHS AND RBHS CELEBRATE THE CLASS OF 2014 DNHS photo by TYLER MCELHANEY | RBHS photo by GAUTAM GUPTA

Del

Norte High School (DNHS) and Rancho Bernardo High School (RBHS) bid adieu to the class of 2014, as the seniors took that long walk across the stage, diploma in hand, and cameras flashing. Surrounded by friends and family, both schools held their graduation ceremonies on campus at each of their stadiums. DNHS’ commencement speaker was Barry Yang and RBHS’ chosen speaker was Valedictorian Nathan Ng, delivering speeches commemorating the class and all of their hard work to get to where they are. Your DNHS and RBHS seniors have not disappointed in terms of academic rigor. DNHS had 384 Nighthawk graduates and RBHS had 565 Bronco graduates, with many of these students heading to universities nationwide this fall. From New York to Alabama to Hawaii, including several Ivy League schools such as Yale, Princeton, and Harvard, these students are sure to go above and beyond in this next stage of their lives. That evening, there were celebrations to be had. DNHS graduates headed to the Miramar Officer’s Club to enjoy a night of dancing, casino games, a zipline, arcade, live entertainment and more. The RBHS senior class made their way north to the K1 Speed in Carlsbad where they raced around the track until the wee hours of the morning. As they leave their high school grounds for the last time, remember what motivational speaker Josh Hinds once said: “Set out each day believing in your dreams. Know without a doubt that you were made for great things.” ¢

:::: NIGHTHAWK INSIDER by BEN FRIEDL special to 92127 Magazine

The Class of 2015: WE’LL MAKE H-15-TORY

To

immediately address the elephant in the room, no, I am not Jackie Wibowo. Our previous Nighthawk Insider, who graduated along with the rest of the Del Norte Class of 2014, will be attending a little place known as Stanford University this coming fall. While this is an incredible achievement for her and I wish her all the best… how the heck am I supposed to fill her shoes? Jackie was president of a countless amount of clubs, had a crazy high SAT score, and managed to letter in varsity tennis. And believe it or not, Jackie was just one of the many students in last year’s

graduating class that set the bar extremely high for us incoming seniors. Although we have big shoes to fill, I believe the Class of 2015 has the power and potential to make Del Norte the best it has ever been. Of course, senior year is something earned, not given. Students must survive the infamous junior year in order to make it to the top of the food chain. Most high school students will agree that junior year could very well be one of the most difficult obstacles mankind has ever had to face. Countless 4 a.m. nights along with extremely rigorous courses contribute to constant sleep

deprivation and an inevitable addiction to caffeine. Will all of this adversity and strife be worth it in the end? It better be. We’ve all endured so much in order to reach the light at the end of the tunnel, and now it’s finally here. It’s our time to shine. Get pumped 92127, the Del Norte Class of 2015 is here and ready to make “H-15-TORY.” ¢

Excited for Education “WHAT EDUCATION MEANS TO ME”

F

or Revati Thatte’s Gold Award project, she wanted to bring awareness about education and literacy in rural parts of India. As part of her project, she asked students at Stone Ranch Elementary School (SRES) about what education means to them and to express it in a well-thought essay. Revati shared, “It’s a topic pretty close to my heart, and I think kids could really benefit from taking the time to reflect and realize the importance of going to school every day and learning.” The winning essay was written by Shannon Zhu, a 4th grader at SRES, who described how education would help her develop a meaningful life. She wrote, “One way education has helped me is that it has allowed me to communicate with the wider world. Since kindergarten, I have read a lot of books and had much passion for them as I grew up. Education has helped me read them, and from those books and novels, I learned new words to help me communicate.” Shannon expressed that “a good education of reading, writing, and doing math” will help her achieve her goals, including her dream to have a fulfilling career as a fashion designer. “Also, once I learn or make something, I can pass it on. For example, if I become a teacher, I can pass on what I learned to the students. In addition, if I become a doctor, I can cure patients. Education is important for leading a life that I can be proud of because of my achievements and successes.” ¢
