Vol. 5, No. 1 TM

Traditions.

A

s we approach the holiday season, you can’t help but reflect back on family traditions and memories that most of us have been fortunate to grow up with. It’s very easy to turn on the “autopilot” and get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life – our work schedules, house duties, playing taxi driver for our children. The list goes on and on... I recently attended a business seminar in Las Vegas. A topic that came up frequently throughout the seminar was family traditions and memories – specifically childhood memories. To be honest, until I was asked to recall and analyze some of my best memories over the past 39 years, I had not given it much technical thought. Sure, everyone has memories – some that they hold dear to their heart and some that they may want to forget. But forcing myself to take a trip down memory lane proved to be a rewarding and enlightening exercise. I believe that there are a few types of memories (generally speaking) that are welcomed and tend to stand out in most people’s minds – the good memories and the memories surrounding family traditions. I can easily pull up the good memories. Childhood sports. Playing with friends in the neighborhood. Video game marathons. Derrick Breaux Family vacations and road trips. Awesome cardboard box forts! Publisher But one of the things that is easy to overlook is the stability that comes along with traditions. Most of our family traditions involved holidays. Growing up, there were always certain things that I could rely on. To name a few, I knew exactly what we were going to be doing on Christmas Eve every year. I knew what food would be served for Thanksgiving. I loved the annual family camping trip – always at the same lake and campsite. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I definitely found peace in the consistency that came along with these traditions. My son made me feel good the other day when we were discussing our upcoming holiday plans. My wife and I were bouncing a few different ideas around when he blurted out, “but we always cook gumbo on Halloween and Christmas Eve!” In his mind, I’m sure the little things like cooking a family favorite on certain days of the year are just “what we do.” But they are actually so much more than that. I intend to continue with as many of the traditions that have been passed along to me, and I hope that one day my kids will be able to reflect on these traditions and choose to carry them on and introduce them to their own families. To family, creating memories, and carrying on with great traditions. Happy Holidays! Derrick Breaux, Publisher

Four years

People said we couldn’t do it. But our neighbors embraced us, local businesses bathed in the saturated exposure, and four years flew by in what seemed like a summer vacation. And just like a wide-eyed Del Norte graduate, the world is our playground. From the first issue of 92127 Magazine four years ago, to ZCode’s current portfolio of ten community magazines covering a majority of North County, it has been a wild ride. Thank you for being a part of it, and hold on, we have a lot in store for the next four years.

K

ira Bender, a Del Norte High School (DNHS) student and resident of Rancho Bernardo, has been awarded one of approximately 625 National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) scholarships for the 2013-2014 school year. The NSLI-Y program is funded by the U.S. Department of State and provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students to learn less commonly-taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programs. NSLI-Y offers overseas study opportunities in Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Russian and Turkish. The scholarship enables Kira to study Chinese in China for the summer. The scholarship covers all program costs for participants including domestic and international travel, tuition and related academic preparation, language testing, educational and cultural activities focused on language learning, orientations, meals and accommodations with a host family. Launched as part of a US government initiative in 2006, NSLI-Y seeks to increase Americans’ capacity to engage with native speakers of critical languages by providing formal instruction and informal language practice in an immersion environment. Educational and cultural activities are designed to promote language learning and build mutual understanding and long-lasting relationships. The goals of the NSLI-Y program include sparking a life-long

interest in foreign languages and cultures, and developing a corps of young Americans with the skills necessary to advance international dialogue in the private, academic or government sectors. Participants will build upon the foundations developed through person-to-person relationships while abroad. Through her participation in the program, Kira will serve as a citizen diplomat while developing the skills necessary to be a leader in the global community. Kira is currently studying Mandarin Chinese at DNHS, and she plans to continue her studies at the college level. She has yet to decide her major in college, but she is certain it will be something in the STEM field, and intends to apply her language skills towards promoting a more unified, global community. NSLI-Y is administered by American Councils for International Education in cooperation with AFS-USA, American Cultural Exchange Service, Americans Promoting Study Abroad, AMIDEAST, iEARN-USA, Legacy International, and Russian American Foundation. Applications for 2014-2015 NSLI-Y programs are expected to be available in the early fall. The NSLI-Y program is open to anyone who is interested in pursuing a language in the hopes to promote positive change for the future at an international level. It all begins with an online application submission. Visit at www.nsliforyouth.org to learn more or to apply. ¢

rom his dedication to promoting Nighthawk spirit to his love of entrepreneurship and filmmaking, Barry Yang is one passionate young man. He is currently the Associated Student Body (ASB) president at Del Norte High School and in just a few short months has made quite an impact on the campus. “When I ran for ASB president, I based my campaign around a threepoint plan consisting of interaction, communication and recognition,” stated Barry. Once elected, he made good on his platform promises by planning activities that were more accessible to all students and engendered more school spirit and sense of community. He and his ASB team launched a website, www. AlwaysFlockOn.com, where students can design and sell their own Nighthawk spirit wear with all proceeds benefitting student activities, as well introduced a phone number for students to call in or text with suggestions about how to improve the Del Norte community. He and the ASB crew have also begun special recognition events to acknowledge students, faculty and staff who make a difference for the Nighthawk flock. Although he is extremely involved in the Nighthawk community now, that wasn’t always the case. According to Barry, it wasn’t until an “aha!” type of moment toward the end of his sophomore

year that he realized that he wanted to make the most out of the time he had left at Del Norte. He is especially motivated by the fact that because Del Norte is such a new school, he and his classmates have a unique opportunity. “Traditions and culture are just being established which allows for more active participation and a chance to play a meaningful role in the community,” related Barry. In addition to his duties as ASB president, Barry is an entrepreneur, filmmaker and cooking enthusiast. “I’ve been involved in various “I’ve been involved business ventures since fourth in various business grade and my most recent ventures since fourth project is www.RBInteract.com, grade and my most recent project is www. an online community which RBInteract.com, an online community allows residents to sell, buy, which allows residents share and connect with their to sell, buy, share and fellow neighbors,” connect with their fellow neighbors,” revealed Barry. And as a self-proclaimed foodie, Barry can often be found in the kitchen, whipping up meals for family and friends. As graduation approaches, the future is wide-open to this renaissance student, and there is no doubt that with his many talents and passion for making a difference, Barry is someone to watch. ¢

S

an Diego non-profit the Lucky Duck Foundation has announced it will be donating $700,000 to local and national charities this year, the result of proceeds raised at the fifth annual Swing & Soiree event and Pat and Stephanie Kilkenny’s matching donation. This brings the total amount of money raised since the Lucky Duck Foundation’s founding to $3,780,623.22. One hundred twenty-eight golfers participated in the shotgun shamble golf tournament at the Santaluz Club on Monday and a total of 300 guests gathered for the evening reception and live auction, which included hot-ticket items like a trip on a private jet, Super Bowl tickets and a visit to the set of Fox Sports. The night’s biggest money generator was the paddle raise, which garnered a record $143,000. The Kilkennys will be matching all the funds raised at the Swing & Soiree and double matching the paddle raise. In total, this year’s Swing & Soiree raised $257,000 a substantial increase from the $171,000 raised in 2012. Del Mar couple Pat and Stephanie Kilkenny started the Lucky Duck Foundation in 2005 to raise awareness and funds for charitable causes. The name “Lucky Duck Foundation” is a nod to Pat’s Irish heritage and his Oregon roots. ¢

DAILY FLUFF

After School Magazine Partners With ZCode to Showcase Youth

S

A special submission from the ASES after school program students at Mesa Verde Middle School

tudents from the Mesa Verde Middle School ASES, an after school program, have been given the rare opportunity to join forces with San Diego’s very own ZCode Magazines and go behind the scenes to learn the ins and outs of magazine creation. The After School Education and Safety (ASES) program is a grant-funded program that provides a fun, safe, stimulating environment for students whose parents cannot be home when their children return from school. Studies show that participation in the ASES Program increases students’ attachment to their schools, improves test scores, and keeps kids out of trouble. One of the ways the ASES program at Mesa Verde Middle School keeps students engaged is by offering enrichment clubs such as Comic Construction, Duct Tape Fashion, and Master Chefs that are not only fun, but also educational. The Daily Fluff is a monthly magazine consisting of articles, comics, artwork, and stories that have been submitted by the students in the ASES program. This year students get to be directly involved with the creation of the magazine which include writing articles, taking photos, and designing the layouts.

Aspiring writer, Nika Shlopov (6 th Grade), comments that she is really looking forward to working on the magazine this year. “I am new to the program so I’m excited to start writing articles and learn how to design,” said Shlopov. According to the website, ZCode Magazines is a privately owned, multi-media company based in the 4S Ranch in San Diego. The company brings a fresh innovative take on community magazines as well as related websites and newsletters. With the help of ZCode, The Daily Fluff hopes to showcase the many talented students in the North County community. ASES Site Coordinator, Monica Racicot, is enjoying watching the magazine grow into something much bigger. “We’re so thrilled to be working with ZCode magazine,” she said. “Not only will The Daily Fluff get some much needed attention, but the students will come away with transferrable skills that will carry on in to the workplace later in life.” For more information about the After School Education and Safety (ASES) program please visit the Poway Unified School District website at www.powayusd.com. If you’d like to learn more about The Daily Fluff contact Monica Racicot at 858-472-1689. ¢

resident, G. Michael Hopf has lived an exciting life. “I joined the United States Marines out of high school because I wanted to see, feel and experience the world. From there I went from one adventure job to the next,” said Hopf. From spanning the globe during his six years in the Marines, to becoming a commercial diver in the Gulf of Mexico, to working as a personal bodyguard, one might even say that Hopf’s life is something out of a fiction novel. It’s this background, perhaps, that is the very thing that led Hopf to the success he has today. Hopf decided to pursue his dream to be a writer several years ago when he took a chance on authoring a children’s book. “That gave me some experience as it pertains to the self-publishing side of things,” he explained. Not long after, Hopf starting writing his first novel titled, The End, which he wrapped up in fall of 2012. “I was fortunate enough to get picked up by a literary agent but that relationship didn’t work out. I was then left with going indie, so I self-published The End in April 2013.” From that point, things really took off. The End started selling quickly, and Hopf decided to quit his day job to focus more on his writing. “I’m a

believer in striking the iron when it’s hot, so I set to writing the sequel,” he explained. The sequel was titled The Long Road and since it was selfpublished by Hopf in August 2013 it has hit #1 in several Amazon categories and is selling strong – an act, Hopf noted, that led to other sources of interest in his books. “Based upon my sales numbers on Amazon, a representative from Penguin/Random House contacted me,” he said. “I have a multi-book deal so I am now writing book three in the series and am obligated for more with them over the next couple of years.” Although he is committed to his writing, Hopf still makes his wife, Tahnee, and two daughters, Scarlette and Savannah, his top priority. “I am a blessed man; speaking for myself, nothing can be more precious and satisfying than being surrounded by three ladies who love you deeply. We are a tight-knit family,” he shared. With all of his success Hopf explained that people are often surprised to discover he does not have a degree or any formal training in creative writing. “As far as the writing goes,” he said, “I followed Hemingway’s advice. When asked to give advice to aspiring writers he simply said, ‘Just write.’ And that is exactly what I did.” ¢

rave Enough to Follow Your Heart, Wise Enough to Follow Your Head, Strong Enough to Never Take the Easy Way Out, Endurance Enough to Go Until the Job is Finished.” This is the motto of the Bunsolds, High Country West residents for the past two years. Kristin and Robert Bunsold, and children Hailey and Collin, have the adventurous lives and livelihoods to make them the poster family for this mantra. Sweethearts since high school, Kristin and Robert met while both attending a Junior College Emergency Medical Technician Course in Big Bear, 1997. It was their winter semester, and the course was a prerequisite to their Big Bear wedding four years later, as well as a glimpse toward two noble occupations of service. Kristin now works in the specialty of Rheumatology, administering IV medications to treat autoimmune disease. She has worked in the solid organ transplant ICU at Loma Linda University Medical Center with some of the leading experts in that field, attracting patients from around the world to receive the industry-leading surgical techniques. eila Valencia, a fourth grader at Sunset Hills Elementary School in 92129, is a sweet, loveable girl with a caring demeanor. Awarded her school’s “Super Seagull” honor for showing good character, Leila revealed, “As long as I’m making the world a better place, I’m happy.” But did you know this altruistic nine-year-old (who will be ten in December) is also a three-time Kids World Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Champion, as well as the current NAGA (North American Grappling Association) Expert Division Champion? Leila even admitted, “When people meet me, they’re surprised to learn that I’m a fighter.” Dedicated to the martial art sport since the age of four, Leila participates in two-hour training sessions four days a week at the 4S Brazilian Ju Jitsu Training Center located in 92127, in addition to daily conditioning and drill exercises at home. Leila gushed, “I love Brazilian jiu jitsu! My training involves learning techniques, doing drills and sparring – my favorite. I also help with the little kids’ class,” Leila elaborated. In addition to Brazilian jiu jitsu, Leila takes ballet, jazz, acro and hip hop classes at Dance & Company in Mira Mesa/Sorrento Valley. Her fancy footwork has even allowed her to proudly perform in featured roles at her studio’s annual jazz and hip hop productions. Grateful for all of her opportunities, Leila has developed a desire to assist others in overcoming their plights. She recently shaved the back of her head to donate some of her hair to the Locks of Love charity, which makes wigs for children with cancer. Leila also helps her aunt run the “adopt-afamily” program, in which donated items are gathered for families in need. Leila pinpointed that her own drive to succeed was inspired by an eye-opening trip she took to the Philippines. She explained, “I saw kids there that didn’t have clean water, and they had to miss school so they could help earn money for their families. I’m so thankful that I have everything I need, and it makes me want to work harder because I know I’m so lucky.” ¢

Ask Your 4S RANCH DENTIST Did you know that you could actually save hundreds of dollars by using your dental benefits before the end of the year? If your dental insurance plan is on a calendar year, these 4 reasons will show you why you should make a dental appointment now. 1. YEARLY MAXIMUM

The yearly maximum is the most money that the dental insurance plan will pay for your dental work within one full year. The yearly maximum usually renews every year (on January 1 if your plan is on a calendar year). If you have unused benefits, these will not rollover.

2. DEDUCTIBLE

The deductible is the amount of money that you must pay to your dentist out of pocket before your insurance company will pay for any services. The average deductible for a dental insurance plan is usually around $50 per year. Your deductible also starts again when your plan rolls over.

3. PREMIUMS

If you are paying your dental insurance premiums every month, you should be using your benefits. Even if you don’t need any dental treatment, you should always have your regular dental cleanings to help prevent and detect any early signs of cavities, gum disease, oral cancer and other dental problems.

4. DENTAL PROBLEMS CAN WORSEN

By delaying dental treatment, you are risking more extensive and expensive treatment down the road. What may be a simple cavity now, could turn into a root canal or loss of a tooth later.

RB Historical Society Presents Speaker Program

The Rancho Bernardo Historical Society’s Speakers Series presents the History of 4S Ranch on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 10 a.m. in the Rancho Bernardo History Museum. Linda Ralphs Kaeser, whose grandfather purchased the 3600 acre 4S Ranch in 1938, will share her memories of horseback riding and bird hunting. Rancho Bernardo Road was a dirt extension of Black Mountain Rd. and cattle grazed on the hillsides. Her extended family continues to vacation there in the same way their grandparents did in 1938, off the grid with no public services and no utilities, just cool breezes whispering through the eucalyptus trees. Linda’s family kept the original 90 year old Ranch House, and in 1981 formed a development enterprise which turned 4S Ranch into the complete planned community we see today. They live by the philosophy ‘by families, for families, with families’. For more information visit www.RBHistoricalSociety.org.

Horizon Prep Time Capsule Finds New Home

The new construction on the Horizon Prep campus unearthed the time capsule buried when the land was dedicated and the school was launched in Rancho Santa Fe. Now the time capsule has a new home, refreshed treasures and rededication by the Horizon Prep Lions. “As before, we are keeping the Bible in the time capsule, and adding a yearbook,” said Horizon Prep Head of Schools Dr. Kenneth Kush, “as well as a photo of our inaugural class of high school 9th graders and a photo of our Class of 2026.” The event was marked with a special Family Chapel ceremony. The heat of the day was matched only by the warmth in the hearts of the Lion family as they gathered in song, prayer, celebration and dedication.

igh school is full of life’s most influential and permanent experiences. Everything from school dances to sporting events, lunch break hangouts to homework and late night cram sessions. But it’s the students that shape those experiences for the rest of the class that truly benefit from what these deceptively quick four years have to offer. We talked with

Del Norte High School’s ASB Director Allison Basehore and ASB President Barry Yang, and provide an insight into the 33 officially sanctioned active clubs available to students at the school. Whether it brings back memories of a simpler time, or motivation for current or future students, one thing is sure: the effort the students put into these programs is just a fraction of the benefits that they will ultimately leave with upon their departure from Del Norte.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ACTIVITIES CLUBS PUT ON THROUGHOUT THE YEAR THAT STUDENTS LOOK FORWARD TO? The biggest event that clubs put together is Club Carnival which occurs about twice a year. This is when all the different clubs on campus sign up to sell food, drinks, etc. to students during lunch on certain set dates. It’s a huge turn out every year we’ve done it, and the student body loves it because it gives them a chance to buy off campus food. The clubs also love it, as this is one of the biggest events that clubs get the majority of their funds from. Another event that we’ve had annually is the Food Packaging Event put on by KIN club. elcome tto the 2013-2014 winter sports season. We are heading into an exciting 2013-2014 school year with great momentum and excitement. We are so proud of the student-athletes’ hard work and accomplishments on and off the field, court/mat, and pool deck. Our campus is filled with excitement after our two CIF titles and twelve leagues titles in 2012-2013 school year. We are preparing for strong competition in the North County Conference while maintaining our high standards academically. This season we expect a lot of high powered game coming to Del Norte. Our athletic department believes we have highly motivated student-athletes, coaches, and staff who promote the success of programs through our motto “Earned Never Given.” We are continuing our quest for building a culture of success, establishing traditions for future Nighthawks and graduating student-athletes well prepared for post high school endeavors. he Lady Eagles basketball team have only two returning players this year and are looking to rebuild for the coming season. However, there are some exciting newcomers to the program and the team is expected make a strong statement this year with another successful season. Team defense is always a key ingredient of the program which is why the Lady Eagles have been one of the top defensive teams in the section the last three years. The Eagles boys basketball team are coming off their first year in the highly competitive Pacific League where they respectively finished in the middle of the pack. Their tough league competition, coupled with the new CIF play-off alignments, and against teams with

much larger enrollments, will provide them with some daunting challenges that Coach Barnhard believes his team will be able to meet and achieve. Four starters return from last year’s squad and the outlook for the Eagles is extremely bright. Under the leadership of second year coach J. D. Tena, the Lady Eagles soccer team looks to greatly improve their game. The team returns nine starters from last year’s squad and there are three new impact players who are new to Maranatha Christian. Look for not just a large increase in the numbers of victories, but a successful season capped off by a run in the play-offs. The Maranatha Christian boys soccer team has

been the school’s most successful athletic program for the last couple of years, and this year should be no different. Although, Coach Cabral lost a number of key players to graduation last year, he has simply reloaded. The Eagles return six starters to this year’s squad and they are excited about the development of couple of key younger players and the addition of new team members. The guys will compete again for a Pacific League Title and should qualify for the Division III play-offs. ~ Tim Shelton, Maranatha Christian High School Athletic Directorr

CPCMG Restores, Sustains, and Enhances Children’s Health and Development

C

hildren’s Primary Care Medical Group (CPCMG) provides what parents want most: quality care, comfort, and convenience. CPCMG pediatricians focus on wellness, carefully monitor every child’s growth and development, discuss all childhood needs and issues, and help parents navigate every age through 18. Dr. Thomas Page, Board Chair for CPCMG, explained, “CPCMG is one of the largest physician-owned, primary-care-only medical groups in the country, and we’re accredited by The Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care.” The primary doctors, Dr. Jaime Friedman, Dr. Loubaba Adlouni and Dr. Christian Archambault, attended prestigious medical schools – University of Maryland School of Medicine, University of Alexandria School of Medicine and University of Connecticut School of Medicine, and participated in quality residency programs – Oregon Health &

Science University, Loyola University School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital of Orange County. All three pediatricians are experienced in the San Diego community as well: Lead Physician Dr. Jaime Friedman has been practicing for 14 years, Dr. Loubaba Adlouni for 18, and Dr. Christian Archambault for 14. Upon entering CPCMG’s bright, new 4S Health Center office, welcoming staff members greet children and their parents with warm smiles, immediately putting them at ease. Children may watch movies in the waiting room before spending time with their pediatrician for up-to-date, compassionate medical advice and treatment. These kind pediatricians, who have had a lot of experience caring for their own children and patients as they’ve grown through all stages, listen and observe attentively before carefully explaining treatment and options.

And, upon leaving, the usual stickers, sugarfree lollipops, and treasure chest rewards are available for children. Parents love the convenience of CPCMG. They pay only their co-pay or coinsurance because most insurance plans are accepted. The MyChart feature allows secure, on-line access for viewing children’s health records, and making appointments or emailing physicians, which saves parents’ valuable time. CPCMG is integrated via the same computer system as Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego and specialists; if specialist care is required, CPCMG staff can easily coordinate, relieving parents of an additional burden. Furthermore, same-day appointments for illness or injuries, and during evening and weekend hours, are possible because CPCMG is the region’s largest medical group specializing in healthcare just for kids. Parents have easy access to more than 100 board-certified pediatricians at 21 practice sites throughout San Diego County and southern Riverside. Parents who value pediatricians working together to restore, sustain and enhance the health and development of their children in a comforting, convenient, personable manner, should contact CPCMG today. ¢

WINTER FUN

SAN DIEGOSTYLE A Guide to Fun in the Wintertime Sun by JENNIFER FRAKES

W

hile much of the country is under gray skies and blankets of sleet and snow, San Diegans are enjoying sunshine and mild temperatures. Here are a few ideas on how to celebrate the winter months San Diego-style!

That’s So San Diego

Searching for the Seasons

Take a stroll through Balboa Park to admire the beautiful architecture and holiday decorations.

Experience a winter wonderland high atop Mount Laguna, only a onehour drive from San Diego. If the conditions are right, sledding and snowball fights may ensue.

Add a twist to a trip to the beach by collecting seashells to make unique gifts or to decorate holiday packages. For a special treat, walk along the cliffs of Point Loma to see migrating gray whales headed south for breeding season.

Drive up to the top of Mt. Soledad in La Jolla for a birds-eye view of the city aglow with holiday light displays.

Holiday Happenings

Winter in San Diego includes an abundance of holiday-themed festivals, parades and awe-inspiring spectacles. Parades include the Mother Goose Parade in El Cajon (Nov. 24), the Gaslamp Holiday Pet Parade (Dec. 8), and the stunning San Diego Bay Parade of Lights (Dec. 8 and 15). The Surfing Santa event at Seaport Village (Nov. 24), December Nights in Balboa Park (Dec. 6 and 7), and Christmas in the Park in Poway (Dec. 14) are always a hit for kids and adults alike, featuring food, crafts, holiday treats and activities.

60 • 92127Magazine.com • November | December 2013

Sometimes a little peek at the changing of the seasons is required to get into the holiday spirit. Take a drive up to Julian for gorgeous fall colors and maybe even snow during December and January. Don’t forget to order a cup of hot apple cider and a piece of apple pie!

It (Almost) Never Rains in San Diego

On the rare occasion that it rains, there are plenty of indoor activities that appeal to a variety of interests. See an IMAX film at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center and then visit one of the 15 major museums in Balboa Park. Take the trolley downtown and explore the New Children’s Museum or head to the San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum in Escondido. For sports enthusiasts, skate at one of several of San Diego’s indoor ice rinks, or reach new heights at an indoor rock climbing gym. Regardless of the weather, it is not hard to experience some wintertime fun in San Diego. ¢

t is no wonder that Brian Maienschein, Assemblyman for the 77th District, is dedicated to making San Diego an even better place to live – his roots in the community run deep. He moved to Poway when he was seven years old and attended Chaparral Elementary School, Twin Peaks Middle School and Poway High School. “San Diego has so much to offer – beautiful weather, gorgeous beaches, so many different things to do on a daily basis and great people. There is nowhere else I’d rather live,” stated Maienschein, whose daughters currently attend school in the Poway Unified School District. Maienschein received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara and then returned to San Diego to earn his law degree from California Western School of Law. In 2000, Maienschein was elected to the San Diego City Council. He became known to many in the district for his quick response to the Cedar and Witch Creek wildfires that swept through the community during his tenure. After his second term on the City Council, Maienschein became San Diego’s first Commissioner on Homelessness, a position he held for four years. According to Maienschein, he has always felt strongly about serving his community and giving back to his hometown. “To be able to represent my classmates, neighbors and friends is an honor that I never take for granted,” revealed Maienschein. Now that he is halfway through his first term as an assemblyman, Maienschein is even more committed to ensuring that issues such as community safety, education and economic growth are at the forefront of state politics. “I work hard to focus on the issues that are important to my constituents, as well on common ground issues that that can improve the lives of all Californians,” said Maienschein. He is particularly pleased that his legislation allowing background checks for coaches of youth sports leagues has passed. Maienschein is also passionate about creating and passing meaningful legislation that makes a significant impact on issues such as mental health and homelessness. Although Maienschein is proud of his professional achievements, he feels that his daughters, Taylin and Brenna, are his most rewarding accomplishments. He coaches their Brian Maienschein soccer teams, 44 and the three of California State Assemblymember them can often Father of two daughters, Taylin and Brenna Maienschein be seen out and Spending time with my daughters, reading and sports about. “We’re an active family, and we love spending time outdoors, either having picnics at one of the local lakes or running around playing soccer at the park,” related Maienschein. 

ndre Kwan has worked in the lending industry since 2003. After years at a Fortune 500 company, he now works as Vice President of Mortgage Lending at Guaranteed Rate. “I have always had a passion for real estate and – combined with finance – it was a natural fit,” shared Andre. “Home finance always seems to provide me with new opportunities and challenges which I enjoy.” According to his clients, he is meeting those challenges head on and exceeding their expectations. ”I am still a little bit in awe of what just happened,” admitted former client Gloria D. After she and her husband were turned down by their local community bank and their own investment bank, Andre came through for them. “You were literally able to close in 11 days with a better rate than anyone else offered,”

she continued. “I’m not sure how you did it, but [we] cannot count our blessings enough for all your help and getting this amazing home.” Andre credits his success to his staff. He and his team have received recognition for their work, earning five-star service awards from San Diego Magazine. With award-winning technology to support his customers as well, like transaction monitoring software, online loan applications, and countless web-based educational tools, Andre knows he is giving his clients every advantage. Guaranteed Rate’s strong relationship with lenders also puts Andre in a unique position to help his clients. “We are a multiple lending platform,” explained Andre, “meaning we have several investors who provide best price/rate execution options vs. just having only one source like your typical bank or credit union which may have limitations.” Founded only about 10 years ago, Guaranteed Rate’s proven model has helped it grow at an incredible rate. Recognized as one of the most successful private companies in the U.S. for five years straight, Guaranteed Rate was also named a top private U.S. job creator and was included on the Fast Fifty list for six consecutive years. Andre shares that success by bringing his expertise to the community. He has served on the San Diego Board for the California Association of Mortgage Professionals and can be heard weekly on Sundays at 10 am on 1450AM KFSD San Diego’s Financial news and Talk Radio. Real Estate Matters Correcting Your Home’s Value Online by SCOTT VOAK

I

t can be frustrating to visit one of the online sites to check your home’s value only to find it a lot lower than you believe it should be. If you’re thinking of selling, it can be a big problem: most buyers start their search online and once they see your home listed will go to one of several sites to get their first estimate of the real value. If this value is much lower than your asking price, it is unlikely that your home will sell for as much as you would like. The reason the automated sites are inaccurate is that they work with averages. The sites are very good at determining the average price in the neighborhood. However, the program hasn’t seen any of the homes and doesn’t know if they were all foreclosures that needed $100k of work or if they were spectacular homes. It also doesn’t know if you have a panoramic sunset view or superior upgrades compared to the rest of the neighborhood. Up until now, you just had to live with the number provided by most of these sites. However, I recently partnered with the company that provides these valuations. If you go to www.VoakHomes.SmartHomePrice.com and select “do not have a key code”, you can put in your address and the system will show you a range that web sites are using to publish your home’s value. If you disagree with that value, simply select “Adjust My Home Value!” and you will be asked a couple of questions about your home. I will be notified to investigate the estimate and then can instruct the company to change your online value. If you are thinking of selling do this before you list your home and buyers rush to the online sites that might be under valuing your home. ¢

Love on a Leash

The Foundation for Pet Provided Therapy by ROBIN KAUFMAN | President, San Diego Love On A Leash

W

hat do libraries, schools, hospitals, veterans facilities, domestic violence centers, and court rooms all have in common? They, along with a number of other places, all receive pet therapy visits from Love On A Leash (LOAL), the Foundation for Pet Provided Therapy organization. Love On A Leash is a national, non-profit, all volunteer organization established in 1984. The goal is simple – to bring smiles and comfort to those who are visited by a pet therapy animal. Pet therapy animals are privately owned and can be a dog, cat, or rabbit. The dogs can be pure breeds, mixed breeds, and come in all sizes. LOAL does not raise and train dogs to be service or companion animals. To become a fully certified LOAL pet therapy team, dogs must have basic obedience skills and a good temperament. After graduating from a six-week pet therapy training class and passing a control evaluation test (as well as passing the Canine Good Citizen test), the dogs and their humans must then complete a minimum of 10 supervised visits. For cats and rabbits, a veterinarian must certify their health and temperament. After initial certification, those pets must also complete a minimum of 10 supervised visits. There are three LOAL chapters in San Diego County – San Diego Love On A Leash (sandiegoLOAL@aol.com), which covers the north county inland areas; San Diego North County Chapter (mgleisberg@cox.net), which covers the north county coastal areas; and the San Diego Central Chapter (sandiegocentralloal@gmail.com), which covers everything in-between. To learn more about Love On A Leash, visit the national website at www.loveonaleash.org, or San Diego Love On A Leash’s website at www.sandiegoLOAL.com. 

Replacing an Old Air Conditioning System Can Save Energy and Cut Long-Term Costs For Homeowners by JENNIFER FRAKES

M

JPM Heating and Air At-A-Glance

ost homeowners will admit that even though the weather in San Diego is relatively mild year-round, their air conditioning systems definitely get a workout in the hotter summer months. According to Jason Purgason of JPM Heating & Air, Inc., air conditioning systems last for only about 18 to 20 years before needing to be replaced. And even if the system isn’t that old, homeowners who notice their air conditioning systems are not operating at the same level at the end of summer as they were in June may also want to consult with a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professional. “Typically, a simple diagnostic of a unit’s age and condition will give insight into whether or not a system needs to be replaced,” explained Purgason. Although replacing an air conditioning system may seem more costly than simply repairing an older unit, oftentimes newer systems are more cost and energy efficient, leading to greater savings in the longterm. “Newer systems can have less impact on the environment and on the homeowner’s budget. Replacing a faulty unit cannot only improve the efficiency of your heating or cooling unit, but also reduce the day-to-day costs of running one,” stated Purgason. Newer units tend to be more

accurate and user-friendly, enabling homeowners to customize settings for optimum energy and cost savings. In addition, homeowners who purchase high efficiency units may receive tax benefits for reducing their carbon footprint. Before deciding to replace an air conditioning system, it is important to work with an HVAC professional to determine what system will work best in the home. “When replacing a system, the size of the home, usage style, geographic location and the insulation capability of your home are all things to be considered,” said Purgason. In other words, the new system must be compatible with the needs of the individual homeowner and accommodate the living space where it will be used. Most HVAC companies will remove old units when replacing it with a new one. The old units are typically taken to a recycling center for scrap metal and parts. And regardless of whether a homeowner decides to install a new air conditioning system or stick with their old one, changing the filter is essential. Purgason recommends performing this easy, do-it-yourself task up to four times per year for older systems and at least twice per year for newer systems. 

estled in the 4S Ranch Village Center is Bold Smiles Family & Cosmetic Dentistry. “Our location,” explained Owner and Lead Dentist Dr. Jeremy Bold, “couldn’t be better. Our patients are our neighbors and friends. We wave to them as they pass by for their morning Starbucks. They often stop in to say “hi” on the way to Subway for lunch.” Dr. Bold – who, along with his wife and two kids, is a resident of 92127 – opened Bold Smiles in 2006 with a vision of providing quality care to all new families moving into the area. Today, not only is his practice creating healthy, white smiles all across 92127, but it’s succeeding at providing a personalized dental experience. “We strive to know more about each of our guests than what is revealed on a set of x-rays,” he stated. A graduate of the University of Southern California’s School of Dentistry, Dr. Bold has advanced training in treating complex dental rehabilitations and cosmetic dentistry. He is certified in such dental techniques as Invisalign, Diode Lasers and CEREC. His skilled dental team is committed to staying current with the latest technology and

procedures. In addition to their gentle touch, they offer complimentary movies, warmed water, and use of a massage chair during treatments to help make patients’ experience a more stress-free, relaxed visit. Dr. Bold and his team pride themselves on being the only dental office in 92127 that has the capability of doing “one-visit dentistry.” “Using computer-assisted technology, we can make beautiful, long-lasting, all porcelain crowns, onlays, and veneers in a single visit,” explained Dr. Bold. “This process usually takes two or more visits spread out over several weeks, but is sped up to be done in around two hours using the CEREC system inside of our office. That means no temporary crowns or having to get numb a second time, and a product done in a single visit that rivals any crown sent out of the office to a dental laboratory.” Perhaps the most significant aspect of his practice is the personalized approach. “The atmosphere at Bold Smiles is friendly and relaxed,” described Dr. Bold. “The entire team genuinely enjoys each other and all of our patients, and the patients can tell. We know our patients when they come through the door. From the time you walk in, until the time you walk out, you are greeted several times by name, and made to feel comfortable. Even the most phobic patients are made to feel at ease.” ¢ Name of Business: Owner: Years in Position: Manager: Years Established: Address:

J

acques Lord, a resident of the Westwood (Northfield) community since 1994, has worked as an engineering geologist for over 30 years, cleaning up hazardous messes in soil, groundwater and sediments. An accomplished man, he holds a BS degree in math/physics/geology from Brown University, and a Masters in geology from Rice University. Jacques joked, “I consider myself a macrobiotic geologist; Brown-Rice? Get it?” That sharp sense of humor helps Jacques in his tireless commitment towards volunteering. He said, “I have been overdoing it with volunteerism most of my life! My family is seriously patient with me and puts up with a lot. The most rewarding thing about volunteering is the feeling of connection to the community, and the sense that I make a difference, no matter how small.” To make a difference in his own community, Jacques jumped headfirst into umpteen volunteering positions. He teaches an Introductory Astronomy class and is on the Board of Directors at the Westwood Club. He is a guest teacher/Science Field Day coach at Westwood Elementary. He serves as a vestry member at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Poway. He is in the Royal Regiment Marching Band Dad Crew. He is also a volunteer faculty member for the United Policyholders, the organization that created the

“Roadmap to Recovery” after the 2007 wildfires. But that’s not all. An amazingly talented magician – he was twice bestowed the “Stage Performer of the Year” award from the International Brotherhood of Magicians – Jacques routinely performs free sleight of hand shows for such organizations as Kiwanis, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Rotary Club, and the National Psoriasis Foundation. Describing his magic skills, Jacques revealed, “Good magic is theatrical; it is a good story supported by effects, not just ‘trick-trick-trick.'” As someone who obviously puts heartfelt thoughtfulness into his work, it’s no surprise that Jacques’ caring tendencies extend out to practically everywhere he goes. He frequently walks out his front door and sets up his telescope on a clear night, and cajoles the neighborhood families to come check out the starry sights. Jacques also loves hiking, attending concerts at Rancho Bernardo High School, bird watching, gardening, cooking, and being a loving husband and father to his wife, Marcyn, and four daughters. Making a plea to all potential volunteers, Jacques avowed, “No volunteer effort is too small. If you are reading this and you don’t volunteer for something, come on in. The water’s fine!” ¢

:::: nighthawk insider by JACKIE WIBOWO special to 92127 Magazine

Enjoy the Ride W

hen I was younger, I had the biggest fear of rollercoasters – and unfortunately for me, I grew up in a family that loved amusement parks. Little did I know that on my brother’s 13th birthday, I’d be guilttripped into riding the Goliath at Six Flags Magic Mountain, probably the most intimidating ride in the whole park. It begins with the cart slowly ascending, then stopping for what seems like forever at the top. In that time, the anticipation distorts your perception of reality, making you feel that what is to come will be insurmountable. Yet, once the track releases you, the 85-mile-perhour, 255 feet drop seems to go by in a matter of seconds, as you barely have time to even process what is going on around you. At the end, you feel accomplished and ready for your next challenge.

We’re two months in, and it’s crunch time. Freshmen feel the pressure of their first high school classes, sophomores struggle through their first AP classes, juniors sneak out their vocabulary cards in class as they scramble to prepare for the SAT. And Seniors – trust me when I say I know the feeling of being overwhelmed beyond belief with the merciless college applications and rigorous course load. After all, as I’m typing this article, I’m on my 3rd double-shot espresso for the day, it’s 11:30 pm, I have a textbook-thick stack of homework on my desk, and the Common Application sits open on one of the tabs of my screen (accompanied by Twitter and Facebook, of course). But don’t lose hope yet. We are all facing our Goliaths, but remember what the Nighthawk community has to offer us. While we slave away with our course-loads, our school continues to flourish in spirit and pride. It’s evident in our

new spirit website, alwaysflockon.com, in the sea of “Keep Calm and Flock On” shirts every Friday, and even the new Del Norte Wayfarers. Furthermore, our counseling department never fails to follow through, as they remind us of college visits and set us up for success. We are blessed with the best faculty and the best resources in the district, and they are there to make this stressful chaos just a bit easier. As apprehensive as you may be now, Nighthawks, you’ll realize that the monstrosities you visualized in your mind are more easily conquered than you believe. While you’re on this ride, stop and enjoy the ephemeral view: it will be over before you know it. ¢

Supporting junior golfers is important to the future of the sport,” said Roger Porzak, president of the San Diego Junior Golf Association, adding that it also allows the golfing community to enrich the lives of children by teaching sportsmanship, discipline and integrity while the kids are having a good time playing the game. Roger, a mortgage banker with American Capital Home Loans in Rancho Bernardo, stresses the word “fun” when discussing junior golf programs, but he also praises the effectiveness of those programs in preparing youngsters to compete at the high school and college levels. To illustrate, he points to the program at Bernardo Heights Country Club (BHCC) in Rancho Bernardo where he is a member. He feels other golf courses would do well to emulate that program, which is not only open to children and grandchildren of BHCC members but also to any of their friends who would like to participate. The junior program at BHCC is a year-round endeavor, featuring clinics on Saturdays with separate instruction for beginners as well as for intermediate and advanced golfers. Supervised, on-course play then takes place on Sundays: three holes for beginners, nine holes

for intermediate players, and 18 holes for more advanced golfers. “Participants can work on their golf swings and focus on short-game and scoring-zone skills at their own pace, learning in a safe, ‘junior friendly’ environment that is conducive to developing friendships and a love for the game of golf,” Roger said. At the end of each summer, a junior championship tournament is played at BHCC, and a young lady won the trophy this year for the first time. Playing from the back tees at the tips of the 6,679-yard course, Jamie Binns shot 78 to win the tournament’s 18-hole championship flight. Runner-up to Jamie was Patrick Norris of Rancho Bernardo. The 9-hole champion was Logan Rethmeier and the 3-hole champion was Quinn Conway, both of Poway. Jamie is a senior at Scripps Ranch High School, and she finished 17 th in this year’s California Women’s State Golf Championship. She will attend Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo next year on a golf scholarship. A young man from BHCC whose abilities have now advanced well beyond the “junior” level also distinguished himself on the links this year. Eric Sugimoto of Rancho Bernardo led his University of the Pacific team to the Big West Championship title, capturing the individual medalist honors for himself. ¢

Where’d this magazine come from? Meet the

Team

In 2009, we launched our first community magazine. The goal was simple – to publish a local magazine that people actually wanted to read. Since publishing our original issue back in 2009, ZCode Magazines has grown to a family of 10 community titles, each focusing on specific areas of North County. The ZCode team, or shall we say, family, takes great pride at meeting our overall goal in every issue we build together. We all live locally in San Diego and we are actively involved in every one of the communities. Whether we are shaking hands, meeting people, participating in school, sports, organizations and philanthropic events, we are out there learning and sharing the good news about what’s going on in your community. Thank you for inviting us in to your home and being a reader of 92127 Magazine.

Derrick Breaux | Publisher I’ve always found it rewarding to build things. I like the process just as much as I enjoy the end result. It’s great to see each issue of the magazines grow from concept to hard copy. My typical day at the office consists of interacting closely with the editorial, production, graphics and sales teams.

Tyler McElhaney | Creative Director The nickname “Tynology” can almost describe my obsession with the latest, greatest, newest, most exclusive “thing.” At the ZCode office one can usually find me designing covers, playing with cameras, editing photos, redesigning websites, searching for “that one” cable, fixing computers and re-redesigning websites.

Sarabeth McElhaney | Editor As a San Diego transplant from the City of Good Neighbors, I am constantly falling deeper in love with my “new” home every day. ZCode has helped me discover everything there is to offer in our bountiful region of the west coast. At the ZCode office one can usually find me sorting through the mountain of news and events in our area. You know I mean business when my hair is tied up in a messy bun.

Jessica Rae Woods | Editorial Assistant I’m a San Diego native who likes to write and read (a lot!), play Japanese taiko, and spend time with my extended family. I’m an entertainment enthusiast: movies, comics, video games; you name it, I love it. In the ZCode office, you can find me clacking away at the computer, listening to music, and tackling editing projects like a machine. I love San Diego and can’t wait to discover new things about this great city.

Jessica Breaux | Director of Business Development I am a native San Diegan and I couldn’t imagine working, playing and raising my family anywhere else. I spend most of my evenings and weekends being a soccer mom of three. At the ZCode office one can usually find me juggling lots just as I do at home. If I’m not at the office pushing paperwork you will find me out networking in our communities.

Rick Micheri | Regional Account Executive As a first generation American, the local community played a daily roll in my life. For over 36 years this community has been an extension of the family. I’m proud to have my daughters enjoying the same schools, events, families and so much more that is offered today. ZCode is a great way for me to give back and to the community. At ZCode you will find me expanding the horizons with New Business Development, Agency Sales Director and helping hand in hand wherever necessary.

Monica Cogger | Senior Account Executive Originally from the Midwest, San Diego has been my home since 2003. My husband John has kept me entertained, laughing and in love for the last 14 years, and our happy trio of kids keep us extremely busy. At ZCode, I enjoy meeting and connecting with our community and providing my advertisers with excellent customer service. I love my job and our magazines! Outside of work, you’d find me at CrossFit, stand-up paddleboarding, or enjoying family and friends.

Mani Salazar | Graphic Designer San Diego born and bred, I’ve been to 49 states and wouldn’t live anywhere else! (Alaska is #50). Married for two years to my beautiful wife, we enjoy traveling and going on as many adventures as possible. I’m blessed to design for a living – it’s definitely my passion. At the ZCode office one can usually find me staring wide-eyed at the monitor, eating sunflower seeds, being extremely OCD with my designs or trying to sneak in as much hand-lettering as possible. Who says we have to grow up?!

Traci Sally | Graphic Designer I recently moved to Carlsbad from Philadelphia checking off a landmark goal on my bucket list to make a home by the ocean. I’ve been designing for the past 10 years and can’t imagine doing anything else. Outside work I trade my mouse for a paintbrush or my woodblock press and enjoy spending time on the local beaches. At the office one can find me creating smartly balanced ads and layouts fueled by a giant Starbucks iced coffee (venti, no room with an extra shot, shaken)

Richard Soledad | Graphic Designer I have always enjoyed art, media, and design, and have had the priviledge to join the ZCode Media team just recently. At the office, you’ll often find me working with layout and cross-checking various pieces of paper. I enjoy spending time with my wife and our wonderful toddler, exploring and discovering what San Diego has to offer. You’ll often catch me watching movies, shows or playing video games in my spare time. When not doing those things, I enjoy drawing said movies, shows and video games.

Maria Fernandez | Graphic Designer I was born and raised in Mexico, where I was surrounded by the love of my big family and lots of good food. Now that I am in San Diego, I find myself constantly feeding and caring for my husband, two kids (along with their friends), and our puppy. When not with my family, I enjoy going to the gym or reading. I am passionate about graphic design, and I’m thrilled to be doing what I love at ZCode, a place that has become an extension of my family.

Heather Lockwood | Production Coordinator I am a mother to two wonderful boys, and a wife to the love of my life of 16 years, with over nine pets; dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and fish. In my free time, I enjoy making and fixing jewelry for friends and family. I’m known in the office as “Lockwood” and can usually be found sending emails and being the liaison between our marketing and graphics departments. I love seeing the magazines printed knowing I helped make it happen.

Lori Lum | Spark Photography | 92127 Photographer I’m an award-winning photographic artist with a passion for connecting with my clients. My husband of four years and I love living in San Diego, and we enjoy exploring all the city has to offer. I have owned and operated Spark Photography since 2007 and my affiliation with ZCode has allowed me to get to know some amazing people who live right in my own backyard!

HOLIDAY GIFTS

I

t’s difficult enough to find the perfect holiday gifts for friends and loved ones, but the task becomes even trickier if they have allergies or asthma. Allergist Dr. Kusum Sharma of AKANE Institute of Allergy, Asthma & Sleep Medicine, a member of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), suggests the following gift-giving tips:

nice, NOT

naughty

Go easy on edibles Food allergens lurk in all kinds of holiday goodies, from fruitcake (nuts) to cookies (wheat), so you’re better off avoiding food gifts. A better bet is a gift certificate to the recipient’s favorite restaurant. Pause at the pet shop Little ones may beg for a furry friend, but pet dander, saliva and urine from cats and dogs can trigger allergy and asthma symptoms, which will certainly put a damper on holiday cheer. Instead, consider a hypoallergenic stuffed animal that’s machine washable. Parents, remember to wash it weekly in hot water or freeze it overnight to rid it of allergy and asthma triggering dust mites. Go for the gold Jewelry may seem like a safe bet, but many people have a nickel allergy, frequently found in costume jewelry. If 18 karat gold is too much for your budget, consider an alternative gift like a watch. Be cautious of clothing A festive holiday sweater may be in style but if it’s made with angora (rabbit fur) or wool (including cashmere) your friend with

itchy eczema will feel miserable rather than fashionable. If you want to give clothing to someone with eczema, pick something made of 100 percent cotton.

Please, no perfumes Perfume, candles, soaps or lotions won’t pamper those who sneeze from strong scents or may even break out in a rash. Shop at stores that feature allergen free products or consider a department store gift certificate.

Pass on the poinsettia Nothing says the holidays like poinsettias, but it can mean trouble for those with a latex allergy (the plant is in the rubber tree family). Flowers in general can make people with allergies sniff and sneeze. If you insist on bestowing blooms, consider roses and orchids, which tend to be less of a problem for allergy sufferers. The best gift of all would be to let your allergy or asthma prone friends and loved ones know that their conditions are treatable. According to Dr Sharma, with recent advances, it is even possible to change ones immune system so they don’t react to the allergens. This is called Immunotherapy, commonly known as allergy shots. They have been around for a while but now there are faster, safer and more effective Immunotherapy modalities. Recently introduced sublingual Immunotherapy allows using liquid drops in the mouth instead of shots. As Dr Sharma puts it “the car you drive today looks nothing like the car your parents drove”. ¢
