all started as an idea. We didn’t know exactly what we were about to get ourselves into. After months of napkin scratching (often accompanied by a glass of wine or two or three at one of our favorite local restaurants), we decided to pull the trigger and launch 92127 Magazine. The first issue of 92127 hit driveways back in November of 2009 – that’s right, we didn’t even mail them to houses in the beginning. We started mailing to all of the homes with the third issue. At least in my mind, the concept was simple and straightforward. We were going to “publish a magazine that people wanted to read.” As a matter of fact, that is still our company mission statement to this very day. After all, how hard could it actually be? In the original concept, 92127 Magazine was going to be “template-based” and easy to design. We would then be able to duplicate the template-based concept into other neighboring zip codes. Piece of cake, right? Well… not so fast. What we quickly discovered is that our “templatebased” concept was not going to be template-based after all. On the contrary, as we began to assemble the ZCode Team, we discovered that our talented crew of professionals had a burning desire to push the limits and make each issue better than the last one. In fact, they would have it no other way. Therefore, complete customization was in, and the templates were out. Complete customization allowed us to spotlight people, families, organizations, and businesses at the professional level that they deserved (and we envisioned). We wanted to create bigger-than-life editorial features that people would be proud of and keep for the rest of their lives – articles that are often found framed on their walls. An artistic editorial piece that would normally only be found in national magazines, but all compiled specifically for our local community and residents. That was the vision, and the incredible ZCode Team composed of editorial personnel, graphic designers, account executives, and our production coordinator came together to make it happen. Issue after issue, our team works hard to pull over 80 pages of beautiful editorial content, advertisements, and community announcements together. The adrenaline rushes of upload night (the night that we send the magazine to the printer) are not as strong as they once were. In the early days, it was not uncommon to watch the sun rise after a long night of final touches. Today, we rarely have to stay past 7 p.m. on upload day. But after five years of publishing 92127 Magazine – and thirty-one issues – we still get excited to kick our feet up and flip through the pages when the issue arrives. In fact, it’s a gift. It still amazes me how a team of nearly twenty people can efficiently work together to produce a magazine that touches the heart and soul of the local community. Rather, it was presented to her by the judges after a solid dance performance at the try-outs for the reality TV show So You Think You Can Dance. The youngest contestant to make it through the Callback Week for Season 11, Jasmine recalled, “There were fewer than 200 of the top

dancers in America there, and it was so inspiring watching all the dancers and their different styles from all across the nation. The show was definitely one of the best experiences I have ever gone through.” A 2014 Del Norte High School (DNHS) graduate, 18-year-old Jasmine looks to her high school experience and the 92127 community as a strong foundation for

her success. “Overall, the community I have grown up in is amazing because it stresses the importance of making longlasting relationships with people,” Jasmine acknowledged. At DNHS, she credits the principal, Mr. Mizel, with creating an accepting and engaging environment. “He makes the school a community where everyone is comfortable being

themselves and participating as much as possible,” Jasmine stated. “There was never a time at the school when I was afraid to be different.” In the classroom and around the community, Jasmine enjoys “real-world situations.” Math is her favorite subject for its use of logical reasoning. When not studying or on stage, she enjoys exploring San Diego with her friends, whether it’s discovering a hidden trail or trying a new restaurant. When she does find time to sit down, Jasmine enjoys crocheting, drawing, and painting. Jasmine looks to her mother Christine Vo and former dance coach Lynn Rae as her inspirations. She recognizes her mother’s sacrifices and support, as well as her intelligence and confidence, as one of the most important influences in her life. Lynn Rae was the woman who both challenged Jasmine and maintained complete faith in her ability. “Without her, I would not be the dancer I am today,” she acknowledged. This fall, Jasmine is a freshman at University of California, Irvine majoring in dance and working hard to earn her next “golden ticket.” She has set the goal to be a professional dancer and later open her own dance studio, where she can pass on her passion and inspire other young dancers just as she was inspired by her dance teachers. ¢

CYMER, LLC NAMED OUTSTANDING PHILANTHROPIC CORPORATION

92127 company was honored as this year’s Outstanding Philanthropic Corporation at San Diego’s 42nd National Philanthropy Day celebration. Cymer, LLC, a light source developer, was nominated by the San Diego Opera for its dedication to being a valued corporate citizen and partner in the communities where its employees work and live. Cymer funds grants and scholarships to over thirty nonprofit organizations that work towards improving local education, health, culture, environment, and civic initiatives. By the end of the year Cymer will have donated close to $7.5 million to the San Diego community. Cymer’s community program encourages employee participation – last year, employees donated a total of 1,719 hours of service at forty-seven different community events. One notable program is the Cymer Digital Studio, which provides disadvantaged students with education in digital photography and music, video, and graphic design. The program has recently added a robotics curriculum. National Philanthropy Day is organized every year by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, San Diego Chapter (AFPSD). The event aims to acknowledge local individuals and organizations for their philanthropic contributions to the San Diego community. The theme of this year’s event, held at the end of October, was “Celebrating Philanthropy: Gifts of Time, Talent, and Treasure”. “National Philanthropy Day is a special day because we get to celebrate all the amazing contributions – time, talent, and treasure – that make such a difference in our community,” said AFPSD President Pam Becker. “Every year it’s difficult to select the honorees because we receive so many nominations from so many organizations.” 

he pursuit of a dream takes a series of small steps. Niki Lucia choreographed her steps to music, a journey from the neighborhood dance studio of her youth to owning and operating Danceology, a 14,000-square-foot performing arts campus in 4S Ranch. Growing up in Rancho Bernardo, dance has always been an important part of Niki's life. “As a child I was very athletic and artistic. Dance was a perfect fit and, through the years I dedicated myself to dance through the local studio in the neighborhood,” Niki explained. After graduation, her next step was both completely unexpected and incredibly valuable. “On a whim and recommendation from a friend, I auditioned to be a Charger Girl,” Niki said. The next three years were spent at a blistering pace rehearsing, performing, speaking, and serving as an ambassador for the Chargers. In her final year, Niki served as the team captain and attended the Pro Bowl. “I directly attribute my leadership skills to my experiences as a rookie and as a captain of the Charger Girls,” she acknowledged. a close, Nicole continued dancing, this time with the desire to share her passion with others. In partnership with her mother, Niki opened her own dance studio, a long-time dream for both women. “We found a for-lease sign in on an empty dirt lot in a new area of Rancho Bernardo called 4S Ranch,” Niki reminisced. In a 2,000-square-foot space, Danceology opened in 2003 with a commitment to create a family-focused environment for all ages and abilities. “Five years later, we moved to a beautiful 14,000-square-foot facility in 4S Ranch where we are still located today,” Niki said. “Coaching the dancers’ hearts and minds is just as important as teaching their bodies to do the steps,” she stated. “We encourage a competitive spirit, however, at the same time we foster an attitude of pride in their work ethic, which in turn prepares them for success on the stage.” Looking forward, Niki is excited to grow and diversify their programs, with offerings like Tapology and Classical Ballet Academy. For those looking to pursue dance, Niki offered a few words of advice, “Stay humble, be diligent and distinctive, respect the art, and honor the mentors and teachers who inspired you and believed in you.” ¢

he Rancho BEERnardo Festival, sponsored by the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club (RBSRC) and Urge Gastropub, kicked off under sunny skies. Participants got to choose tastings from approximately fifty craft brewery IPAs, received a complimentary tasting glass, and voted for the People’s Choice award for the best IPA, all to the tune of live music throughout the event. The Rancho BEERnardo Festival is the only IPA Fest in San Diego and was a huge success this year, with over 450 people arriving for the festivities at the Sikes Adobe Historic Farmstead. Designated drivers were allowed entry free of charge. Funds raised will go towards some of the many charities supported by the RBSRC, including schools, scout troops, and veterans organizations. Dancing Debut

DEL NORTE FRESHMAN GIVES A PASSIONATE PERFORMANCE

itika Shrivastava, a 4S Ranch resident and freshman at Del Norte High School, has spent ten years studying the Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam. She has performed at multiple cultural events, including the Festival of Lights at Balboa Park, but her decade of practice and passion truly culminated in her recent Arangetram performance. Bharatanatyam originated in the temples of southern India and reflects nineteenth and twentieth century reconstructions of the ancient form. The form is known for its grace, intricacy, and sculpturesque poses. Today it is one of the most popular and widely performed dance styles in the world. The Arangetram ceremony is the maiden dance performance for the dancer to demonstrate the results of years of learning. The performance is judged by gurus and pandits of the classical music and is the dancer’s entry into the world of professional dancing. Ritika’s performance lasted two and a half hours and consisted of six separate dances, each illustrating unique mythological stories. The dance was accompanied by a live orchestra including Ritika’s teacher, Subashinee Venkatesh. The audience of 250 people gave her a standing ovation at the end of her final dance number. Ritika is a very well-rounded student. In addition to practicing Bharatanatyam, Ritika volunteers at the 4S Ranch Library, participates in Debate Club, and competes in STEM-related contests such as Science Olympiad. She has played in multiple tennis tournaments around San Diego. With such a broad range of interests, Ritika balances new and old traditions. 

om and Gail Czyszczon met in 2003 when they were set up by a mutual friend. “Funny thing is that we both grew up in the suburbs of Chicago about twenty minutes from one another,” explained Gail. “We were born in the same year… both Polish, but met thousands of miles away!” The couple – who now have two children together, Izabella (age 6), and Mason (age 2) – debated about moving back to Chicago to raise their children before they fell in love with a place they now call home: Del Sur. “This is absolutely the perfect neighborhood for our family,” said Gail. Initially attracted to San Diego because of the weather, parks, attractions, industry, and people, the Czyszczons have found all of that and more in their Del Sur community. “It is truly a unique place in the world where neighbors welcome you with home-baked goods, backyard barbecues rule, parks are constantly buzzing with happy kids, and getting the mail is a daily delight,” gushed Gail.

spaghetti squash pound chicken or turkey Italian sausage onion teaspoon dried basil Salt and pepper to taste eggs, whisked can pizza sauce

Optional: Additional toppings such as olives, artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers, basil, etc. Cheese can also be added and tastes great on top of the casserole.

Directions 1. 2.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Cut spaghetti squash in half lengthwise. Place spaghetti squash cut-side-down on a baking sheet and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the skin of the squash gives when you press on it. Then reduce oven heat to 350 degrees F. Once squash is done cooking, remove threads and place in an 8×8 greased baking dish. Place a large pan over medium heat. Add Italian sausage and onion. Cook until pink no longer remains in the sausage and it is broken up into pieces. Add sausage mixture to the 8×8 dish and mix well with spaghetti squash threads. Add pizza sauce, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Now add whisked eggs to the baking dish and mix everything together until you can no longer see the eggs. Place in oven and bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the top of the mixture forms a slight crust that doesn’t give when you press on it in the middle of the dish. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Participants gathered for a leisurely afternoon of golf, and prizes were awarded for a number of contests. The team with the lowest gross score went to Matt Jiggins, Evan Kuhn, Mike Kuhn, and Dennis Levesque. The lowest net score went to Peter Elia, Bob Moosbrugger, Jim Morris, and Jim Sterk. Closest to the hole were Jon Haratyk and Pat Rohan, and Cam Martin and Tyler Seltzer had the longest drives of the day. After the swing, the soirée began with open bars and buffets, unique boutiques, and silent and live auctions among other activities. Proceeds benefited the Helen Woodward Animal Center, Challenged Athletes Foundation, Fanconi Anemia Research Fund, and St. Vincent de Paul Village. Dedicated Volunteer TED JONES HELPS DEL NORTE STUDENTS AND ATHLETES REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photo by Spark Photography

ed Jones has always been passionate about education and sports. He taught chemistry and physics, A.P. and International Baccalaureate, for many years. He also coached over sixty-five seasons of sports including, football, golf, tennis and basketball. Now, retired and somewhat new to San Diego (he and his wife, Nancy relocated from Palm Springs five years ago), Ted continues his involvement in education and sports as an enthusiastic volunteer for Del Norte High School. “Because of my coaching background I decided that the Del Norte athletic department might be a good fit,” explained Ted. He was right. Not only is Ted a good fit, but he has become a huge asset to the school’s athletic department in a variety of ways. “I might run the clock for a football or basketball game,” described Ted. “I help with registration. I might sell passes or help with parking at athletic events. I make sure the weight room is clean and ready for team lifting.” Ted is also a tutor to athletes, and does office filing when needed. Apart from his volunteer work at the high school, Ted has coached two years for Del Norte youth football. “I also volunteer as a WASC accreditation chairman and run the boys and girls post-season golf tournaments for the CIP Southern Section,” he added. Ted’s interests include playing golf and tennis, reading, and taking walks around his 4S Ranch neighborhood. “Our community has wonderful places to walk, from flat to cardio walks to the water towers or the flags on the hills,” stated Ted. He and Nancy also love to travel. “We have been on thirty cruises so far and have three more planned this winter!” exclaimed Ted. Certainly Ted lives life to its fullest, but nevertheless he remains a dedicated volunteer for Del Norte High School. “Being asked my opinion in different areas in athletics lets me know that what I do is in some small way helpful to athletics and to the school,” shared Ted. ¢

Greg Rubin, co-author of California Native Landscape with Lucy Warren, will speak at an upcoming Bernardo Gardeners meeting about cooperating with nature in design and landscaping. Local Boy Chosen for National Football Team A 13-year-old from 92127 has been selected to represent the country by playing defensive line on the U.S. Under-15 National Team. This summer, Jake Mitten spent a week in Ohio playing in the National Team Development games as part of the try-out process, and he recently learned that he was selected for the national team. Jake will play during this year’s International Bowl week, from Tuesday, Jan. 27 through Saturday, Jan. 31 in Arlington, TX. The week ends with an ofﬁcial game against Team Canada on Jan. 31 at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. At home, Jake plays for the Mira Mesa Chargers and is a student at Oak Valley Middle School. He hopes to attend San Diego State University after high school.

PUSD Day at Petco Park

The Poway Unified School District (PUSD) celebrated PUSD Day at Petco Park for a recent Padres vs. Giants game in honor of Tony Gwynn. Participants in PUSD Day received discounted tickets and were able to purchase discount food vouchers, the proceeds of which benefited the PUSD Foundation. Enzo and Mozart, a band composed of former and current Rancho Bernardo High School (RBHS) students, performed in the park before the game. Superintendent Dr. John Collins and Jared Van Vark, a varsity baseball pitcher at RBHS, walked onto the field where Jared threw the first pitch. Days of the Dons

The Rancho Bernardo Historical Society (RBHS) recently took a trip back in time to the early California ranchos with a lecture by Robert Lerner. Robert represents the Valley Center Historical Society. He spoke as part of the RBHS Speakers Series, which brings noted local authorities to educate and entertain in Rancho Bernardo. His talk, titled “Days of the Dons”, focused on a thirty-year period during which the Mexican governors of California gifted huge parcels of land – known as ranchos – to their friends. Nighthawks Take Home Volleyball Gold

The Del Norte High School girls volleyball players are making teamwork work for them. The Nighthawks Varsity team took home the Gold Division plaque from the recent San Diego Fall Classic tournament, beating highlyranked competitors Bishops and Santa Fe Christian in the semifinals and finals. Setter Grace Rickard was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, and libero Randi Buccat was named to the All-Tournament team. All their teammates proved their abilities during the tournament. The five hitters in the championship match each recorded two or more kills, and four out of six blockers collected at least two blocks. “Every coach that spoke to me after a match or saw my team play during the tournament had mentioned that it was amazing that we didn’t rely on one or two players,” said Coach Nathan Rendon. He continued, “They all had mentioned what a complete team we had and that everyone contributed.”

92127 Girls Complete Silver Project

Three Cadette Girl Scouts from 92127 recently completed their Silver Award project. Siera Gants, a student at Del Norte High School, and Tiana Gants and Athena Huntalas, both students at Oak Valley Middle School, led tours of the Vista Historical Museum for fellow Girl Scouts and other community members. “I decided on this particular project because this was the house my grandfather grew up in and I noticed that it could use a little help advertising to the public,” explained Athena. They spent ﬁfty hours creating educational materials and planning the tour day, including a talk by Athena’s grandfather, Ted Huntalas. “I’m very proud to be able to organize the whole event,” said Tiana. “It was hard work, but it paid off.” Her sister Siera shared, “We all learned leadership while working on this project. I learned how to take the lead and give precise and clear instructions for girls to follow.”

Youth Super PAC Promotes Involvement

Justin Shin, a senior at Del Norte High School, recently created his own political Super PAC. The Youth Political Awareness (YPA) PAC’s goal is to inspire more young people to get involved in government and the community. “Our short-term goals are to hold school forums for students in local high schools to hear more about the experiences of local politicians and the issues pertaining to young people,” said Justin. For one of their ﬁrst public events, YPA members attended the central committee meeting for the Republican Party of San Diego County, where they shared their mission with local political leaders. Justin shared, “Overall, the members loved the idea that there would be young people engaging in the political arena.” The YPA also plans to reach out to the local Democratic Party so they can represent both sides of the political spectrum. Chinese Story Time at the Library

Young Chinese speakers in 92127 have a great opportunity once a month to hear the language come alive in story form. On the fourth Wednesday of every month, the 4S Ranch Library offers Chinese Story Time from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The activities are led by Mrs. Ken Zhong, a Chinese teacher representing All-Star Academy. Mrs. Ken brings an interactive element every week, using games, pictures, online resources, singing, and dancing to keep the children excited about the language and literacy. DSES Earns Blue Ribbon

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan recently named Del Sur Elementary School (DSES) a National Blue Ribbon School, an award given to American schools for overall academic excellence. DSES is the only school in the county and one of just 337 schools in the country to receive the distinction this year. DSES Principal Doug Johnson made the announcement during a surprise assembly for students, staff, and parents, then kicked off the celebration with a DJ, live music, and dancing. “Del Sur Elementary continues to amaze us,” said Bill Ostrem, President of Del Sur developer Standard Paciﬁc Homes.

Community Council Seeks Student Member

The Rancho Bernardo Community Council (RBCC) seeks a student member to join in January. This is a great opportunity to get involved and learn more about the community. Applicants must be a junior at a Poway Uniﬁed School District school and have been a Rancho Bernardo resident for at least thirty days. If accepted, they will serve for a year and be expected to give a monthly report at board meetings and participate in at least one of the RBCC special events or activities. National Manufacturing Day

For National Manufacturing Day on Oct. 3, Northrop Grumman invited students, local officials, and members of the media into its Unmanned Systems Center of Excellence, their Rancho Bernardo laboratory. Experts demonstrated how unmanned systems, including their Bat and R-Bat Unmanned Aircraft Systems, can support crews battling wildfires. The Bat has a ten-foot or twelve-foot wingspan and can be used for surveillance, reconnaissance, and communications tasks. The R-Bat is an unmanned helicopter appropriate for search and rescue, power line inspection, and forest fire observation. Visitors took part in a flight demonstration. Jesse Gipe from Senator Joel Anderson’s office presented a certificate of recognition to Site Manager and Executive Vice President Jim Zortman.

Maranatha’s Father Daughter Social

The Palomar Council PTA’s Adopt A Family program returns this year to help Poway Unified School District families who need assistance during the holiday season. The program is seeking individuals and organizations to help provide gifts for these families. A representative from each school identifies needy families, then the Adopt A Family program matches the family with a donor who fulfills the items on the family’s wish list – usually clothing, household items, and a few toys. Community members are invited to adopt families, if they’re able, or to give grocery and gas gift cards for distribution. Over 200 girls brought their father ﬁgures to school recently for Maranatha Christian School’s 6th Annual Father Daughter Social. The evening event was a chance to create a memorable bonding experience. Soles4Souls Supports Needy Children

Eleven-year-old 92127 resident Trinity Barnera wants to make a difference. As a summer project last year, she collected more than 1,000 pairs of shoes to be donated to children in need through the nonproﬁt Soles4Souls. This summer she doubled that number. With the donated shoes, impoverished children can more easily go to school and receive an education, as well as protect themselves from disease. Trinity used social media and good old-fashioned in-person persuasion to inspire community contributions, and her friends from Oak Valley Middle School supported her efforts. There’s a lot of fundraising coming up soon at Willow Grove Elementary. The 5th Annual Willow Grove Golf Tournament tees up at 10 a.m. on Nov. 17 at The Santaluz Club. One way Abnormal Company has made its business more accessible is by adding a glass-walled brewery, open kitchen and, of course, the winery on the premises. This remodel, which launched with a grand opening on Sept. 18, has expanded the previous 1,500 square foot location into one measuring in at over 5,000 square feet! James proclaimed, “By knocking down all of the walls we created an environment that enables our guests to see everything going on at all times. We wanted to give our guests a more dynamic experience, and let them appreciate both process and product.” With wine as their mainstay product, the most popular is a dessert blend that combines the flavors of wine and coffee. With two popular RB eateries under their belt, the guys realized they had a knack for the restaurant business. So they quit their day jobs and threw themselves head-first into being

restaurateurs – their most recent venture being Brothers Provisions. Together, this trio has helped to transform the RB restaurant scene into the diverse, vibrant foodie haven that it is today. The guys all grew up in Rancho Bernardo and still have strong ties to the community. “While we each came and went during our college years,” they explained, “as we each settled down, got

married and had kids, we began to appreciate this part of town more.” “Frankly, neither of us had a ton of restaurant experience… it took a lot of time and hard work to get going,” Zak admitted. But after The Barrel Room started thriving, the guys knew it was time to expand. “We really wanted to do something different,” explained Nate. “The idea of burgers and beer just kind of seemed obvious,” added Grant. Urge opened in July 2010, and has since shone as an American reinterpretation of the classic English pub, with an emphasis on local products and great service. In 1996, he teamed up with fellow home brewer Yuseff Cherney for a homegrown venture that would grow into the Ballast Point Brewery known and loved by San Diegans today. Wrapping Your Head Around Concussions FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HEAD INJURIES by MARK SHALAUTA, MD; Scripps Clinic, Rancho Bernardo

1. No two concussions are the same. A concussion, usually caused by a blow to the head or violent shaking, is a head injury that can cause physical symptoms and neurological damage. Symptoms may include headache, nausea, vomiting, sleep changes, balance or visual issues, memory or cognitive problems, and emotional changes. Concussions do not always lead to loss of consciousness – in fact, most people never pass out. This is commonly referred to as “getting your bell rung.” That’s why some people can suffer a concussion and not realize it. Others may describe seeing all white, all black, or “stars” upon impact. Younger children may have delayed symptoms.

2. Concussion can happen many ways, in many places. Although contact sports such as boxing and football have received a lot of attention due to their risk of head injuries, concussions can occur on and off the playing field, among children and adults. Common causes include falls, playground injuries, car accidents, and bike accidents. An indirect “jarring” of the head can also cause concussions. Other high-risk activities include cheerleading, hockey, soccer, skiing, and snowboarding. Warning signs and symptoms that need medical attention include worsening headaches, seizures, persistent vomiting, drowsiness, slurred speech, and severe confusion.

3. One concussion can lead to another. Those diagnosed with one concussion are far more likely to be diagnosed with another concussion in the future. In fact, a previous incidence of concussion is the number one predictor for future concussions. In particular, sustaining a second concussion during the healing period of a previous concussion may cause serious long-term problems, including chronic difficulty with concentration, memory trouble, headache, and physical impairment, such as problems maintaining balance.

4. When in doubt, sit it out. The American Academy of Neurology recommends that every athlete suspected of having a concussion should immediately be removed from

play and not allowed to return until free of symptoms and cleared by a health care professional trained in concussion management. In the past, athletes were often mistakenly allowed to return to the game after a “mild” head injury that didn’t cause loss of consciousness, but today experts agree there is no such thing as a “small” concussion. Every blow to the head is potentially serious and should be treated conservatively.

5. Rest and let your brain heal. Physical and mental rest is very important following a concussion because it helps the brain heal. You’ll need to be patient because healing takes time. This can take days, weeks, or sometimes even months. Only when your symptoms have reduced significantly should you slowly return to your daily activities such as work or school. If your symptoms return or you experience new symptoms as you become more active, this is a sign that you are pushing yourself too hard. Stop these activities and take more time to rest and recover. With time and proper medical management, you can expect to gradually feel better. 

ith the kids back in school and the holidays right around the corner, it’s important to monitor your spending during these busy months. If you haven’t started, now’s the time to cut back on energy use within the home. Here are some easy tips to get you started.

Unplug, Unplug, Unplug Make sure you unplug devices when they are not being used. Be especially mindful of computers and laptops. According to the Residential Energy Services Network (RESN), even when these devices are turned off, they will still consume power when they are plugged in and can account for five to ten percent of your total household electricity bill.

Cover Your Windows Blinds, drapes, and window coverings can help reduce energy waste and keep your energy bill low. As the temperatures in October and November remain in the high seventies, close your blinds, curtains, and window coverings to keep the house cooler. According to RESN, your air conditioning will have to work up to thirty percent harder to cool your home otherwise.

Use the Right Bulb Replace standard bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL). The bulbs give off the same amount of light, but are much more energy-efficient. Ensure that you are using the right size bulb for your light fixture.

Adjust Temperature Settings Maintaining a higher indoor temperature setting during summer and a lower indoor temperature setting during winter saves energy. Keep the temperature comfortable by making adjustments to your thermostat before you get home.

In fact, our sunny weather makes December an even better time to take our holiday cheer to the streets. From people to pets and from shore to sea, San Diego has a parade perfect for everyone. Head to North Park on Dec. 6 for the 51st Annual North Park Toyland Parade, a local tradition that dates back to 1936 and was reborn in the late 1980s. Every year, University Ave. fills with marching bands, dance teams, beauty queens, local dignitaries, and community members eager to strut their stuff. Special guests include the new Queen of the North Park Toyland Parade and Santa Claus himself. You won’t want to leave Toyland, and you won’t have to – the Toyland Festival will prolong the magic with pony rides, inflatables, food trucks, and live musical performances. Parades aren’t just for people, and your fourlegged friends can join the fun in the Gaslamp Holiday Pet Parade on Dec. 14. Dress up in your holiday best and promenade through the historic Gaslamp Quarter with a bevy of other celebrants, starting and ending at the Gaslamp Hilton Park. Awards are available in categories such as Best Pet Costume, Cutest Critter, and Ugliest Holiday Sweater. Pets and their human chaperones will get a free bag of goodies at the accompanying Pet Expo. San Diego is known as a surf and turf hotspot, and the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights keeps the holiday spirit afloat – literally! On Dec. 14 and 21, over eighty illuminated boats will proceed from Shelter Island past Harbor Island, the Embarcadero, Seaport Village, and Ferry Landing in Coronado. Participants will bedeck their boats in lights and decorations according to this year’s theme of “Children’s Stories”. Various award categories are judged on creativity of lighting, music, and other special effects. Whether sailing your own boat or camping out on the shore, watch the water come alive with light and sound. 

elcome to the 2014-2015 winter sports season. We are so proud of the Nighthawks for their hard work, dedication, and accomplishments on and off the ﬁeld, court, mat, and pool deck. Our campus is buzzing with excitement after logging thirtysix league titles and ﬁve CIF titles during our four years of varsity sports. We are preparing for strong competition in the North County Conference while maintaining our high standards academically. This season we expect a lot of high-

powered games coming to Del Norte. We will be hosting top-ranked competitors which should be a great challenge for our student-athletes. Our athletic department believes we have highly motivated student-athletes, coaches, and staff who promote the success of programs through our motto “Earned Never Given”. We are continuing our quest for building a culture of success, establishing traditions for future Nighthawks, and graduating student-athletes well prepared for post-high school endeavors.

ven with the cold weather of the winter months approaching, Maranatha is hoping for a hot winter for the four teams that will hit the ﬁelds and courts in November. This season Maranatha will compete in basketball and soccer and will ﬁeld boys and girls teams in both sports. In boys basketball, fourth-year coach Brooks Barnhard (43-34) hopes to lead the Eagles to another CIF D4 playoff run. He returns ten of his twelve players from last year’s squad with seniors Casey Moore (9.6 PPG) and leading rebounder Corey Adkins leading the way. Point

guard Metro Henning will direct the offense and juniors James Rohde, John Bothe, and Matt DeWildt are key returners. Nate Jackson, who ﬁlled in at the end of the 2014 campaign, starts his ﬁrst full season at the helm of the girls basketball team. All nine players return and are led by high-scorer and rebound leader Jackie Kadillak. Jackson expects several players to contribute and has a strong group of young players waiting in the wings. In boys soccer, David Cabral (67-40-11) returns for his seventh season as head coach.

All-League players Isaac Schwan (First Team) and Matt Schumacher (Second Team) lead a group of sixteen returning players. JD Tena is back for his third season leading the girl’s soccer team. In a Soft Market: Should You Sell or Lease? by SCOTT VOAK

his summer was definitely a softer market for 92127 real estate than we have seen in the last couple of years. There were multiple factors, but the resulting price decrease caused some sellers to make a decision whether to accept a low offer or pull the home off the market to rent it for a year or two and hope the market comes back. Many times this decision is made from an emotional point of view – a seller wanting to sell for at least as much as they paid (for example). Using emotion to make a financial decision usually results in a bad decision. Rather than using emotion, it would be better to look at the financial situation and consult your financial advisor. Here’s an example of just one factor that can be very different depending on your situation. Two sellers each own a home worth $700k and paid $725k for the home. Seller 1 has $300,000 in equity while Seller 2 has $30,000 in equity. They both think the market will go up 5% in the next two years and be worth $735k which is more than they paid. Ignoring commissions, fees, and taxes, each believes they will see a $35,000 increase in two years. For Seller 1, that represents a 12% increase in his or her equity over two years. For Seller 2, the increase is 117%. If each seller asks him or herself if they can duplicate that return somewhere else, Seller 1 is much more likely to be able to duplicate a 12% gain over two years than Seller 2 is to duplicate a 117% gain in the same time. Add in the risk of leasing the property (market could fall more, re-painting and re-carpeting after two years, etc.) and it makes a

lot more sense for Seller 1 to sell now, even though the price is lower than desired, while it might make more sense for Seller 2 to lease the property. Please note that this is an example only and is designed to get you thinking about more than what you paid versus what you can sell for. Please consult your real estate, tax, and financial consultants before making a decision of this magnitude.

DR. LIN Dr. Lin is Board Certified as a Diplomate by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is also a Fellow in the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. A Smashing Good Time

THE FIRST ANNUAL JACK-O-SMASH 5K AND FAMILY FUN FESTIVAL

Nov. 2, combine community service with post-Halloween fun at the first annual Jack-O-Smash 5000 and Family Fun Festival, hosted at Sportsplex USA in Poway. The day will be packed with sports, food, and entertainment for all ages. Check-in begins at 7 a.m., with the opening ceremony and a three-airplane flyover at 7:45 a.m. After that are a 5K run and 1K walk/jog for all levels of athletes and amateurs. The Family Fun Festival will begin at the end of the race. Free activities at the festival include bounce houses, live music, an adoptable petting center, a Pumpkin Trebuchet, and a 16-foot-tall Pumpkin Plinko Game. Bring your own left-over Jack-OLanterns for creative disposal. BBQ lunch will be available for purchase, as well as beverages in the beer garden. There will be a celebrity softball game with the Gold Medal-winning Poway Padres Special Olympic Softball team at 11:30 a.m. Families who need a break from the louder festivities will also be able to relax in a designated quiet zone. All proceeds benefit two local nonprofits dedicated to serving young people with special needs. The PoVa Therapeutic Riding Center offers equestrian activities for special needs

Next Stage U is a proposed facility for post-secondary education for young adults. “I’m so pleased that we as a community can come together with our families and friends to enjoy a fun-filled day, while helping our neighbors and their loved ones with special needs,” said Race Director Ginger Couvrette. 

Changing of the Seasons

The

anticipation is over, it’s finally here – we have officially entered the winter season. Far behind us are the relaxing, carefree days of summer as Pumpkin Spice Lattes, yoga pants, and study sessions at Panera are now in full swing and commonplace in the lives of every high school student. And just in time, really, since us San Diegans tend to easily tire of too much perfect 82 degree weather. However, though the beloved sweater weather is finally upon us, lazy days relaxing by the fire with piping hot chocolate and Ed Sheeran serenading our daydreams are not always a reality for

motivated high school students. The fact is, students are about to enter what is arguably the most academically rigorous portion of the school year. The requirements of our coursework often reach their peak at this time, causing sleep to become a cherished gift for high school students all across 92127. However, one can always look at the bright side. I have made some of the best and closest friends through intensive studying of everything from calculus to US history. These particular friendships truly are unique and become permanently etched as we celebrate over surprisingly high test scores, dream about the future, and most

importantly, bond together in a time when everyone is at the starting gate of life. One thing is for sure, we can all relate. So, although the unique challenges of winter are upon us, it is our job as Nighthawks to rise to the occasion, be there for each other, and as always, “Flock On”. 
