Community. Family. Fun. We all live in this part of San Diego County because these things are important to us. And 92127 Magazine reflects the same ideals and interests. lack Mountain Regional Open Space Park offers many trails for cyclists, equestrians, and hikers. But it’s the Miner’s Ridge Loop Trail that offers hikers the opportunity to explore the outdoors with their family members – and find some real surprises in one of San Diego County’s best outdoor recreation areas. Winding through the chaparral and sage covered hills, ridges and canyons on the north slope of the mountain, the 2.5 mile loop trail is moderate in difficulty, and provides the visitor with some spectacular views – including both 4S Ranch and Del Sur neighborhoods – and the opportunity to break away from the hustle-and-bustle of everyday life. 10

A wide variety of native plant and animal species can often be seen while trudging along the well-marked and maintained trail. With a diverse number of birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles often seen during any Miner’s Ridge excursion, it’s easy to imagine coastal California as it was before houses, highways and…well, hikers. For local residents who venture this convenient trail, don’t just trudge diligently to your destination (where you started); instead, take the time to smell, and to listen. Explore your surroundings and experience this invigorating outdoor activity. Access Miner’s Ridge Loop Trail along the south side of Carmel Valley Road between Black Mountain Road and Bernardo Center Drive. ¢ 92127magazine.com

WHAT’S
FOR DINNER?
Schmitt’s Grilled Flap Steak Flap/Flat/Skirt Steak (1 to 2 lbs) Cayenne Pepper Chicken Bouillon Powder Lime Juice (1 lime) or bottled (to your liking) Soy Sauce 1 bunch of Cilantro (chopped to 1” segments)
1) Apply cayenne pepper to your liking on one side of the meat. 2) Lightly apply Chicken Bouillon to other side. 3) Put the meat in a large Ziploc baggie and add lime juice and enough soy sauce so there is liquid in the bottom of the bag. 4) Add the cilantro (there can never be too much cilantro). 5) After all the ingredients are added to the baggie, zip up the bag with air in it. Mix it up really good (over and over) until you can see that all the meat has been coated. Then unzip the bag, squeeze out the air and reseal. Be sure to add more soy sauce or lime juice if you think you need to. Let it marinade for at least 20 minutes (the longer the better). 8) Grill the meat over medium to high heat until you reach the desired temperature - medium rare seems to be our family favorite. Slice the meat into thin strips (approx 1/2” thick). 9) Serve with wild rice, salad, and even BBQ veggies if you like. Optional: As the kicker, lightly pour your favorite salsa/hot sauce over the top of the meat. Don’t forget a good bottle of red wine!

Getting to Know the Austins W
hen Rebecca and Brian Austin moved to 4S Ranch a few months ago, they had a number of valid reasons to make the switch from Carlsbad. They really liked the access to the various amenities available right in their neighborhood, such as parks, stores, restaurants, library, gyms, and hiking trails. And they felt the community was well-planned, with a diverse mix of home styles and sizes -- along with lots of open spaces, which provided for a quality of life they sought. But with a young daughter, it was the reputation of the schools that was first and foremost on their minds. “The Poway School District provided incredible schools located within walking distance of our (new) home,” said Rebecca Austin, Broker/President of New Team Realty. “We know that most people who live here (in 4S Ranch) have the same high standards in their community and priority on their children, which makes us very proud to live here.” 14
92127 Magazine
In addition to her work in real estate sales, Rebecca Austin spends time keeping her mind and body in shape at Bikram’s Yoga Studio in Rancho Bernardo and riding her horse on the nearby trails in Poway. Brian Austin, president of Rank Higher SEO (an online marketing company), is also active in the Scottish Highland Games, traveling around the world tossing “cabers” (a traditional Scottish athletic event involving the tossing of a large wooden pole, similar to a telephone or power pole). Residents of Cambridge, the Austin’s home is often referred to as a “Hotel California” that requires reservations -- as they have two guest bedrooms that are regularly used by family and friends, especially during the winter months (both have families hailing from Canada, who are anxious to take advantage of 4S Ranch’s near-perfect year-round climate). “Christmas is a very festive occasion for us,” Rebecca Austin noted. ¢

DANCEOLOGY’s New Performing Arts Campus
by Taylor Graves
I
n order to accommodate the demand for both the wide variety of performing arts programs as well as the increasing popularity of their dance classes and programs, Danceology, a popular local dance studio opened by Nicole Lucia in 2003, has moved to a new, expanded location. To say Danceology is a modern, 21st-century dance studio is an understatement. With the move to their new home in the 4S Ranch Industrial Park, they have transformed from a single dance studio building into an entire Performing Arts Campus! With an impressive 14,000 square feet, the new studio has 2 floors, and includes 6 new large dance rooms -- all with state of the art sprung flooring and sound systems. The new campus also contains the Dancer’s Diner Snack Bar, a Starbucks coffee machine, classroom viewing, Wi-Fi, and a study area for students to use between classes. These new features make Danceology one of the largest dance studios on the west coast. It has an endless list of amenities that you have to see to believe. The physical appearance of Danceology is not the only upgrade. With over 130 dance classes to choose from each week, you are sure to find a perfect fit. The focus is on creating the best experience for each student, with fun and informative classes for the more recreational dancer, and challenging and rewarding classes for the competitive dancer. Alexa Huey, an advanced dancer at DPAC, says “Danceology teachers are able to motivate me positively to do my best. You can feel the passion they have for teaching, and it makes me want to be a better dancer.” When asked about the exposure Danceology gives the dancers to master teachers and

It is safe and secure, and my daughters love being a part of it” explained Molly Hooks, a parent of a Danceology student. Q&A with the principal of Del Norte High School Q
What is the current number of students?
Q
Current number of clubs, associations and sports?
A
We have nearly 800 students (approximately 525 freshmen and 275 sophomores). Half of our students reside in our natural boundary; half come from elsewhere in Poway Unified School District and beyond. Del Norte opened as an Open Enrollment, School of Choice – meaning, boundary students weren’t required to attend and non-boundary students could elect to attend. DNHS has a school student capacity of 2,200 students.
A
Q
What are the official school colors?
We have 25 clubs on campus presently – and new clubs are forming weekly. A myriad of interests are currently represented: politics, religion, pop culture, the environment, the arts, science, and human relations. As to athletics, we opened fielding teams in every CIF sanctioned sport with two exceptions: gymnastics and roller hockey (though it now appears roller hockey will be supported as a club sport). Our athletes compete in the Valley League. Currently, we field JV and freshmen teams. Next year, we’ll start competing at the varsity level.
A
Our primary color is Navy Blue (pantone 282); accent colors include Forest Green (pantone 3435), Army Green (pantone 5773) and Vegas Gold.
Q
What sports are currently available?
A
Fall sports include Boys’ Water Polo, Boys’ and Girls’ Cross-country, Football, Field Hockey, Golf, Tennis, and Volleyball. Winter sports include Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball, Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer, Wrestling, and Girls’ Water Polo. Spring sports include Baseball, Softball, Boys’ and Girls’ Lacrosse, Boys’ Golf, Tennis, and Volleyball, Swimming/ Diving and Track and Field.

Q
How was the school mascot chosen?
Q
Any surprises so far with the start of year one?
A
We decided early on that we would not select a mascot already in use in San Diego County. Having pre-determined that, prospective students were invited to vote on mascots from three categories: the land, sea, and air. The Nighthawk ended up the popular choice.
A
Q
How big is the campus?
A
Del Norte encompasses over 212,000 square feet on over 63 acres. DNHS has 48 standard classrooms, 12 science labs, five art labs, two music classrooms, five special education classrooms, one drama classroom, 11 vocational education classrooms and labs, one ASB classroom and six physical education classrooms. In addition to classroom spaces, the school features eye-popping sports facilities including a stadium with running track, baseball and softball fields, soccer fields, a swimming pool, and a gymnasium. A library, research center, performing arts complex, administration facility, food services and support facilities complete the campus.
For having such a small staff – as a direct result of the fiscal crisis in the state of California – I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how smoothly our opening has gone. I work with a very talented and committed team of professional people – each of whom takes great pride in his or her work. From classified to certificated, Del Norte is supported by some of the best and brightest in PUSD. Seriously, opening a new high school in the current climate in any other school district would have been much more challenging. Del Norte, as we know it, is only possible because of PUSD. We wouldn’t be where we are without the support of the larger organization.
Q
How have parents contributed to Del Norte HS?
A
Our community has been very supportive. I think we set some kind of a 9th District Palomar Council PTSA world record at our inaugural meeting in the library last August. We had hundreds of parents join the Del Norte chapter. Already this group of parent volunteers has added value, assisting us with the Community Open House in August, Backto-School Night in September, and Red Ribbon Week in October. We plan to establish a DNHS Foundation next.
Q
What are the plans for next year?
A
My guess is that we’ll draw 350 freshmen from inside our boundary, and 100-150 from outside the boundary next fall. As far as programs, we’ll likely be adding drama and choir to our course offerings in addition to new vocational classes. We’ll also be expanding our AP (Advanced Placement) course options. ¢
Q
Is Del Norte High School energy efficient?
A
Yes. At our school dedication in October, SDG&E recognized PUSD and Del Norte High School as a participant in SDG&E’s Sustainable Communities Program. PUSD was awarded a $150,000 rebate check for DNHS’s energy efficiency and green rating.
Q
Is any part oft the campus open to the public?
A
At this juncture, Del Norte is a closed facility. Outside groups are renting the stadium (Pop Warner youth football) and the swimming pool; however, with the way our gate system was designed, there is no public access when we’re locked down.
Q
What kind of “technology” does DNHS feature?
A
Del Norte is state-of-the-art – in the truest sense of the phrase. Every classroom comes standard with SMART board technology, LCD projectors, and an audio system. Most teachers have access to document cameras as well. In the science department, students routinely utilize a wide array of Probeware. Del Norte presently supports PCs and Macs, and the campus has a wireless network. We continue to explore ways to utilize technology to engage our students, enrich their classroom experience, and to prepare them for life in the 21st century.

O
vercoming obstacles is nothing new for 14-year-old Tehya Tatiana Foussat of 4S Ranch. Since birth, she’s been climbing mountains: Three spinal cord surgeries; losing the feeling in her feet and calf muscles; and suffering the effects of a tethered spinal cord and spinal cavity abnormalities. And, yes, It’s been difficult on Tehya and her family. You see, Tehya suffers from one of the worst forms of spina bifida, called lipomyelomeningocele -- which involves her entire spinal cord and numerous nerves. Luckily, her lesions are below her heart and lungs, but her lower bodily functions are compromised by the affliction -- and she has undergone numerous medical procedures since age four. She can no longer stand on her tiptoes, and removal of additional spinal vertebrae makes her very tired because she doesn’t have an entire spinal column to balance and support her weight. She battles pain and discomfort daily. Which makes it all the more surprising that Tehya Foussat is now a ninth grade cheerleader at Del Norte High School. Born in Hawaii, Tehya moved to 4S Ranch from Rancho Bernardo with her parents, Tony and Christine Foussat, in 2004 because of the area’s reputation for good schools, a
close-knit community, and convenient shopping. And they felt it was the right environment for Tehya. “Tehya is a lovely girl and her beauty radiates from within,” said her mother, Christine Foussat. “She has always been so thoughtful, selfless, and caring towards her family and friends, often putting their needs first before her own. She is a ‘Make A Wish’ recipient, but won’t ask for her wish because she feels there are other children who need their wishes granted more than she needs her’s.” Tehya’s mother describes her as someone who never complains and is soft-spoken, yet determined and focused. “She is a positive and uplifting example to those who live with the challenges of disease and disability, that they can achieve anything they dream or desire,” said Christine Foussat. She is also an example to those of us who are able-bodied to use our gifts to better ourselves so we can make a difference in our communities.” Despite the adversities, Christine Foussat feels the most difficult part of her daughter’s affliction is the lack of current and accurate medical information about her ailment -and advice for parents of patients of spina bifida. This led her to form Tehyathon Inc., an online resource where a patient and parent can access reliable, updated and thorough (Tehya continued on page 25)

Sprinkler Systems even or odd? When should you water your lawn?
- Anacleto Valenzuela, gardener
T
here once was a time when the residents of 92127 could water their yards daily, every day of the week, without putting much thought into it. As you are probably aware by now, those days are over due to the water shortage in Southern California. According to the Olivenhain Municipal Water District, as of July 1, 2009, we are currently in a “Drought Response Level 2 Alert” due to an unprecedented water supply shortfall. What does this mean for most of the residents of 92127 Magazine? It means that watering restrictions have been placed on the local communities. A resident can be fined up to $500 after the third violation. A first offense warrants a warning. The district assigns watering days based on your house’s address number. The published Watering Schedule states that odd numbered houses should water on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday, while even numbered houses should water on Saturday, Monday, and Wednesday. All watering is to take place between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. on the appropriate days and each watering station is to be limited to ten minutes on the assigned day. 24
Sprinklers should be inspected and adjusted
92127 Magazine
According to Anacleto Valenzuela, a local professional gardener who has been servicing clients in 4S Ranch and the surrounding communities for many years, you can still follow the watering schedule and keep your yard from dying with proper care, maintenance, and a little dedication. “Most people believe that applying more water is the only solution to a lawn that is turning brown,” claims Anacleto. While this may help in some instances, most of the time a poor looking yard has other factors such as lack of nutrients or a poorly functioning
sprinkler system that needs adjusting. Too much water, improper drainage, illness, and lack of regular maintenance can also play a large factor in poor looking lawns. The most beautiful lawns are the ones that are taken care of and maintained on a weekly basis. Hiring a reliable and professional gardener may be less expense than you think! ¢ CONTACT INFORMATION: Anacleto Valenzuela Gardener (760) 317-6189

information on the disease. Sweet natured, inquisitive and playful -- with a cute sense of humor -- Tehya Foussat attended Oak Valley Middle School, where her first priority, according to her mother, was school work and her grades. And Tehya’s teachers and administrators at Oak Valley were paramount in her healing process after surgery, her mother noted. When Tehya decided to run for Associated Student Body president, she won -- along with receiving the President’s Education Award for outstanding academic excellence and the Heart of Oak Valley Award. Tehya’s interest in cheerleading began when she was six years old and cheering for the Rancho Bernardo Pop Warner league. Despite some apprehensions on trying out for the Del Norte cheer squad, her parents eventually conceded to “let our baby bird fly.” While she does have limitations when cheering, her mother indicated that rarely stops her. And she works on exercises to perfect her jumps and handsprings. It’s clear that Christine Foussat considers raising her daughter both an inspiration and a blessing. “Our family is strong because we know what is really important in life,” she said. ¢
