:::: FROM THE PUBLISHER
Vol. 3, No. 9 TM
Publisher Derrick Breaux
Golf… Friends… and a Little Me Time! I keep a pretty full calendar. Between work, family time and our kids’ sporting activities, I tend to stay on the go without a whole lot of down time. People often ask me if I play golf. My typical reply is that I try to play golf, but it’s hard to find the time. To be honest, I am definitely no Phil Mickelson. Sure, I dust off the clubs, get out there and swing now and then, but my score card is not something to write about. However, there is one golfing event that I do look forward to participating in once a year – my son’s annual Little League golf tournament fundraiser. It’s not so much the golf that I look forward to. Instead, it’s the pure idea of getting together with close friends and family members to spend a day playing. An adult day. No work… No kids… No real sense of responsibility… Just a group of guys goofing off, cracking jokes, having good conversation and knocking a little white ball down the fairway – all for a good cause. There’s something to be said about taking a little personal time and clearing the mind. Combine that with good company surrounded by a little competitive sporting event, and you very well may find yourself amidst a great day. A day that is good for the soul. As we grow older and take on more responsibilities with work and family, it is all too easy to get caught up in the daily grind. The fact of the matter is that I actually love my daily grind. There’s not much that I would change. However, it’s these occasional days – the gift of setting aside some personal time – that puts everything in perspective and recharges the batteries. I plan to have more of these days, whether on the golf course or some other place. Spending time with friends and family… Laughing… Reflecting… Keeping things simple and appreciating life… I think we all need a little ‘me’ time now and then. Regards, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

o kick off spring and celebrate Easter weekend, Del Sur residents gathered for an annual Spring Circus. The Spring Circus is one of many resident events planned by Del Sur’s Community Services Council each year. “Once again, residents attended the Spring Circus in full force and enjoyed food trucks, a festive Easter egg hunt and more,” said Lisa Sanders, marketing manager for Del Sur. In fact, more than 800 residents gathered for the event, which included five acrobat shows, animal interactions, clown school, a creation station, inflatable jumps, face painting and balloon artists. Also on site was the Easter Bunny for an egg hunt, as well as food and drinks from five San Diego food trucks. “We’re a new home community brought together by wonderful events,” added Sanders. “When you attend one, there’s no denying the excitement and spirit of our residents.” ¢

Red Shoe Day 2013
J
oin over 1,500 volunteers at more than 220 intersections throughout San Diego County on June 27 from 6:30 – 9:30 a.m. collecting donations from commuters in the famous size 14 Ronald McDonald Red Shoe! Last year, over $150,000 was raised and the goal this year is to exceed that number. All individuals, groups, clubs, organizations and businesses are welcome to join in on the efforts. If not a volunteer, you are encouraged as a commuter to help in raising the funds. During the morning, volunteers sing, dance, dress up in outlandish outfits and most importantly raise vital funds to help support San Diego Ronald McDonald House families. Participants can be seen at intersections throughout San Diego that morning in their bright yellow shirts and Ronald McDonald House signs, and most notably, the Red Shoes. Each volunteer will be given an official Red Shoe Day 2013 t-shirt. Volunteers who raise more than $150 on their personal fundraising pages through www.Razoo.com/2013RedShoeDay will also receive a Red Shoe Day 2013 hat. Volunteers can register both individually or take an entire intersection with a group. They can complete orientation online or in-person and may pick up Red Shoe Day packets at San Diego’s Ronald

urprisingly, as an 11-year-old, Jillian Dorsey runs her own business – J & M Creations. She and her best friend, Madison Logan, recently sold homemade pies and chocolate-covered strawberries at the Del Norte High School Holiday Bizarre. Noting that her business is authentic, Jillian emphatically stated, “Instead of 20 pies at Christmas, this year I would love to sell at least 40!” Tracy Dorsey, Jillian’s mom, explained that Jillian has always been creative and full of life. Wanting to earn an iPod Touch, she began her first business in 2011 selling hair ribbons. Reaching her goal inspired her to launch two new ventures to obtain Christmas money. The first endeavor involved selling a Halloween decorating package. She purchased supplies, decorated the door or front window of a home and came back to clean everything up for $20. The second enterprise involved making and

Currently, Jillian runs a mini nail salon out of her home that is geared toward kids. She posts her availability on Instagram, customers make appointments and then come home with her after school to get their nails painted or hair chalked before parents arrive for pick up. Jillian explained, “It’s fun for them because a friend is doing their nails and we get to hang out and pick cool colors or new techniques that I usually discover on YouTube.” Everyone benefits – Jillian earns spending money and her friends are pampered with affordable beauty treatments. When not earning money, Jillian is a typical middle school student. Her favorite teacher at Oak Valley Middle School is Ann Tidwell, and she likes social studies because
she enjoys learning about different civilizations. At the Boys and Girls Club, Jillian became the “Youth of the Month,” and in soccer she was voted the most valuable player. She loves going to the beach, Old Town, the Julian Pie Factory and 4S Commons with her family. They appreciate the fact that the Commons’ stores support the schools and particularly enjoy eating at Panera or Brett’s BBQ. Project 127: Providing Hope for Paraguayan Widows and Orphans by KELLEY GUSICH
T
obati, Paraguay, is one of only two landlocked countries in South America. A lack of mineral resources, endemic corruption, and inequitable land distribution combine to create widespread poverty, and because of the financial need of the family, often fathers are forced to travel to neighboring countries seeking work. Many times they don’t return, leaving single mothers lacking specific work skills to support the families. These mothers then must often travel to Argentina seeking employment, leaving their children behind with other family or friends who are unable to provide for them. It is a dangerous situation for children, where many end up orphaned and fending for themselves on the streets of Paraguay. The James 127 Project was visualized and then created to address this problem. Their mission is to enrich, equip and brighten the lives of orphans and widows in Tobati. It was spearheaded by Scott Kvandal and led by a team of volunteers from Maranatha Chapel. Two organizations,

Su Refugio Ministries and Cargo of Dreams, combined for this unique idea that will address an international need in a tangible way: a container conversion! On April 1, a 40-foot shipping container traveled 7,000 miles to Tobati. It is being transformed into a training center, named Women’s Center of Hope, and a multi-stationed playground, obtained through Kids Around the World. A group of San Diegans will travel to Paraguay on July 20 to install the playground at the Su Refugio Orphanage and to finalize the Women’s Center of Hope. On Feb. 16, a successful Family Day celebration brought many family volunteers together to decorate the container and to raise money for the cause – $17,000.00 so far. Helping with the project – either with one’s hands or with one’s finances – will greatly benefit the children of Su Refugio and women in the community of Tobati. The children will profit by having a recreational playground that will assist with their physical development, social behavioral skills and meet their emotional well-being. Equipping these single moms or widowed women with work skills will help reduce poverty and keep families intact. ¢

Leaving the Corporate Life Behind to Help Others by michelle tremblay | photos by Spark Photography
T
en years ago, Ken and Gail Prentiss made the decision to leave the corporate world behind to pursue their desire to work in the non-profit environment. Today, with their daughters following closely in their footsteps, this 92127 family is hoping to help others through their involvement with their church and other charitable organizations. The story of the Prentiss family began when Ken and Gail met at a church Christmas party years ago. Today, they are a family of six with daughters, Sarah (16), Anne Marie (14), Lauren (12) and Alyssa (10). “Anne Marie and Lauren are very active in girl’s fast pitch softball,” said Gail. “They, like their sisters, got started in softball here in 4S Ranch.” Sarah and Alyssa, she explained, are passionate about the performing arts. “Sarah is an avid singer… she dreams of singing on the ‘big stage’ someday. Alyssa’s favorite (acting) roles were Molly in Annie, and Baby Kangaroo in Suessical,” offered Gail. “[They] are both very active in the Christian Youth Theatre program.”

When the Prentiss family is not on the field or in the theatre, they can usually be found serving others through various non-profit outlets. Ken – a former engineer and marketing director for Applied Micro Circuits Corporation – is now heading the San Diego efforts for a startup company that helps generate resources for local nonprofit groups and schools. He also serves as a lay leader for Global Media Outreach Online Missions at Maranatha Chapel. Gail, who had previously held a career as an Acute, Rehab and Home Health Occupational Therapist, is now a full-time mom, and like Ken, is a devoted member of their church and passionate volunteer. “We served in married couple’s ministry through the Family Life non-profit organization,” said Gail. “Our whole family has been involved in the Awana Youth Program at Maranatha Chapel for the past eleven years.” She added that she and Ken have Gail Prentiss served as leaders for the program, while their daughters, Sarah, who has already been leading worship for six years, and Anne Marie are now leaders-in-training. Although they lead a very busy life, the Prentiss family still finds time to enjoy their 4S Ranch community – whether it’s bike riding around the neighborhood or visiting Liberty and Linear Parks. And when asked what they like best about 92127, Gail replied: “We like the people and the family community atmosphere.”
Our whole family has been involved in the Awana Youth Program at Maranatha Chapel for the past eleven years.”

At 4S Ranch Sports Park:
Play Ball!
O
Special submission by Supervisor Dave Roberts
ne of the county’s premier sports parks reopened last month with five acres of artificial turf. Workers finished the $1.6 million project at 4S Ranch Sports Park just in time for little leagues, soccer and softball associations to hold opening ceremonies. As players tossed out first pitches or made those first goals – and for any number of other park users – one theme was evident... play ball! Thanks to the artificial turf installation, a lot more children will have the opportunity to play ball at the county park located at 16118 4S Ranch Parkway. That’s because the artificial turf won’t need a three-month break for seeding, aeration and recovery, like real turf needs. Another advantage of the artificial turf is that it doesn’t get thirsty. Parks officials estimate that over the course of a year, millions of gallons and tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars will be saved. I am always looking to save taxpayers’ money and find a win-win for everyone and this fits the bill. That’s why this project was funded by a county grant. Are you ready to get active? Visit 4S Ranch Sports Park and play ball! ¢

MRES Annual Fun Run Brings in Funding for Programs

Children raising a minimum pledge amount were given a commemorative t-shirt to wear on the day of the Fun Run. This year’s newly designed shirts printed by Viva Merch, a sister company of ZCode Media, were a great hit with the kids, parents and staff! Each child received a commemorative water bottle provided by Moser Orthodontics and their very own race bib to be worn at the event provided by Road ID. The sponsorship and local business support was outstanding and greatly contributed to the event’s success.

Delivering Trust
Special submission by Lori Hazan, Postal Inspector, San Diego Domicile
Postal Inspectors are advising American consumers to beware of scams involving foreign lotteries. During just the past three years, victims lost more than $42 million to these scams. If you or a loved one receives an unsolicited offer, Postal Inspectors recommend: • Hang up the phone or delete the e-mail • Don’t give out personal or financial information to anyone over the Internet or phone • Never wire or send money to anyone, anywhere who says you have won a foreign lottery • Don’t let anyone pressure you into making an immediate decision • Never purchase anything until you get all information in writing If you are a caregiver to older family members, take an active interest in their finances. Older Americans are a primary target of lottery scammers. Foreign lotteries aren’t just a risky proposition for American consumers; under most circumstances they are also illegal. You can prevent becoming a victim. Learn to recognize the warning signs. For more information, visit DeliveringTrust.com.
Local Foundations Award Nearly $100,000
The William R. Gumpert Foundation renewed its support for local literacy organization Words Alive in 2013. With this year’s $88,000 grant, Words Alive will continue its work to close the gap in interest, access and achievement in reading and literacy opportunities that many times exists for at risk and low income children, youth and families. Words Alive serves 1,400 children, youth and families in San Diego County each month. Another local group, The Boys and Girls Foundation, awarded a $5,000 grant in March to Words Alive to support the organization’s Adolescent Book Groups. With these significant investments, the Gumpert Foundation and Boys and Girls Foundation partner in the Words Alive’s mission to dramatically reduce illiteracy in the San Diego community through the use of vital, innovative programs and partnerships that reach out to the County’s most underserved populations.
Willow Grove Students Earn Science Awards
Five teams of Willow Grove students earned an Honorable Mention award from the annual ExploraVision contest, a national science and engineering competition. This largest program of its kind is sponsored by Toshiba and the National Science and Teachers Association and is open to all K-12 grade students in North America. To earn this distinction of exceptional merit, students had to be one of the top 10% of all projects submitted in their grade level. The students were responsible for identifying a problem and improving or inventing a technology to solve it. With names like “The Dyslexic Cure,” “Shoe for the Blind,” “Food Analyzer 6000,” “The Carbon Dioxide Remover” and “The Automatic Cooling Dishes,” it is obvious these young scientists were thinking well beyond the four walls of their classroom to make a difference in a world that soon will be theirs to control.

a letter from principal
mizel
So we have to end with a story, right? I mean, doesn’t that only seem fitting? After all, we’ve shared so many stories together these last four years. Do you remember the early ones about fleas, elephants and rats swimming in a bucket? How many of you remember the skit in the gym during freshmen orientation? How did YOU show up that day? Or how about the story of Blake and Lauren – do you remember that one? Or how about the stories related to time (2,000,000 minutes) and space (think of the golf ball and Canis Majoris)? We’ve shared a lot of stories together these last four years, individually and collectively, but I think my favorite story is your story – the story of the Class of 2013! Just a few years ago, Del Norte was an architectural drawing and a buff spot on the earth. It looked a lot like School 39 across the street from us – the new K-8 currently under construction. Visitors complained that first year, unable to find our campus. Apparently 16601 Nighthawk Lane did not exist according to MapQuest and Google Maps. Like the physical campus, as freshmen, you, too, were easily missed. Though you outnumbered the sophomores two-to-one that first year, they seemed to demand most of our time and attention. In a matter of just a few short years though, as you grew and matured, the Class of 2013 soared above the other classes. You emerged as the true leaders on campus – both in and out of the classroom. As a group, your talent is varied and it runs deep. You are widely respected for your hard work, academic prowess, community service and athletic tenacity. You are a class of doers, of movers and shakers and problemsolvers. You’re as ambitious as you are entrepreneurial. You’ve set the bar high for the classes that will follow you. Once viewed as overgrown and perhaps overconfident eighth graders, today, you prepare to leave us highly regarded and greatly admired. Like the school you’ve attended, you are greatly changed. Fleas jump, elephants roam and the Class of 2013 has SOARED! I’m proud of you and thankful for your leadership and example. Congratulations! Nighthawks Forever!

Every business, school, organization and band fuels on marketing their “brand.” Local screen printing/silk screening business, Viva Merch, builds their services on helping their clients gain exposure. Director of Operations, Nick Martin, tells us just how easy it is to expand advertising in a less conventional way.
Please elaborate on your background experience.

I spent 10 years touring and traveling the world in various musical groups, being

What types of merchandise does Viva Merch produce? Right now, we are able to produce your vision and designs onto any apparel substrate – whether it be t-shirts, sweatshirts, tank tops, sweatpants, polo shirts, V-necks, baseball tees, athletic wear and almost any other piece of apparel you can think of. We can also produce posters, stickers, business cards and banners.
Can Viva Merch help with creating artwork for an order? Viva Merch has an incredible in-house design team that can turn your creative vision into a reality. Whether it be a logo for your business, or a cool design for your school function, our design team can make it happen for you.
How long does it usually take to receive orders? Our standard turnaround time is 5-10 business days. But, if you are looking for something even sooner than that, we'll do everything we can to accommodate your orders' urgency. And you don't have to worry about shipping costs, we're in the area!
What local schools/businesses/organizations/bands has Viva Merch worked with? Viva Merch has had the privilege of working with local schools such as Monterey Ridge Elementary School and Westview High School – working with their fundraiser events and sports teams. We are also doing work for Windsor Rehabilitation Center and their charitable events. We've printed for local bands and national touring acts like Little Hurricane and Conditions. We are even printing for bands in Australia and Canada. We must be doing something right over here!

Here’s Adventure! As a child, Leopoldo Antonio Carillo traveled frequently from his home in Santa Monica to visit the rancho that belonged to his Tio (Uncle) Machado. The warm and inviting feeling of the sun-dried adobe brick walls, the handmade red tile roofs, the aroma of wood smoke emanating from the fireplaces, and the sights and sounds of the brightly colored peafowl that freely roamed the property fueled his dreams. As he grew to adulthood, and Leo made his living as a Hollywood actor, the dream persisted. He envisioned and created his own authentic Spanish Rancho—The Rancho de los Quiotes, purchased from the Kelly Family in the 1930s. He drew a picture of his perfect Rancho in the dirt, and between 1937 and 1940 built what is now the Leo Carillo Historic Ranch. Here’s Romance! The City of Carlsbad acquired the Ranch in 1978, but the park did not open to the public until 2003. Alan and Joan Kindle took a special interest in Leo Carillo’s dream when they moved to Carlsbad in 1985 and they formed the Friends of Carillo Ranch, Inc. Recreation Supervisor Charles Barlteria explained, “Kindle was successful in getting the ranch designated as a California State Historic Landmark as well as being
listed on the National Register of Historic Places.” Recently, Carlsbad received a Governor’s Historic Preservation Award for its work restoring the barn at the Ranch and converting it into a modern visitor center and theater. Here’s the Famous Robin Hood of the Wild West! Leo Carillo Ranch is unique to other historic parks because of its Hollywood connection. Although Leo Carillo acted in nearly 100 movies, he is most famous as the lovable sidekick “Pancho” in the 1950s TV show The Cisco Kid where Cisco and Pancho played Robin Hood type desperadoes who assisted the downtrodden. It would surprise many to know Leo was already in his 70s when the series began in 1950, and it also may be interesting to learn The Cisco Kid was one of the first television series to be filmed in color. Here’s the Leo Carillo “Ranch of the Spanish Daggers” for Your Visiting Pleasure! Guided tours at the Ranch teach visitors Leo Carillo’s legacy, which includes his acting career, but also shows us a man who cared deeply for his native California. Take a trip to the Leo Carillo Ranch and visit a fabulous piece of California History!

Strike Up the Band Andy Geib Shares his Passion for Music with Oak Valley Middle School Students by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos by Spark Photography
Name: Age: Community: Profession:
Andrew Charles Geib 42 La Mesa Professional musician, private music instructor, music assistant at Oak Valley Middle School Family: Wife – Cindi; Son – Carter (4)
58 • 92127Magazine.com • May | June 2013
“I
started at Oak Valley six years ago. I am the music assistant and am very lucky to have directors that want me to take part in every aspect of the program, from conducting, selecting music and running the jazz band, which is my true passion. I also run Sinfonia, our full symphony orchestra,” exclaimed Andy Geib. At Oak Valley Middle School, Andy is known for his high energy teaching style, unique sense of humor and passion for music. Andy is an accomplished musician and has toured all over North America with a band called the Wise Monkey Orchestra. He stopped touring in 2001, although he still plays with the band, and became involved with various groups and recording projects around Southern California. He has worked on commercials and the feature film Stuck on You, starring Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear. In 2009, he played with Toots and the Maytals on “Light Your Light” which was nominated for a Best Reggae Album Grammy. He also plays with the Styletones, a throwback to the old soul and funk bands of the 60s and 70s. “We [the Styletones] were featured on a new PBS show called Live at the Belly Up and enjoy all the performances we can offer in and around the community,” revealed Andy. He and the Styletones are scheduled to perform at the annual Benefit Concert at Oak Valley on May 1. This concert is the biggest concert and fundraiser for the music program and features professional musicians, as well as the best musicians Oak Valley has to offer. Andy has also started a high school community jazz band that is comprised mainly of students from Del Norte and Westview, many of whom were students of his at Oak Valley. When he isn’t teaching, rehearsing or performing, Andy loves to play golf and watch sports. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Cindy and their 4-year-old son, Carter, who Andy describes as the most amazing person he knows. Andy also finds inspiration in the musicians he has worked with in the past and the ones he currently plays with, both professional and amateur. “The most rewarding part of [working with students] is seeing the success that our groups have been able to achieve and the pride they take in that success. Seeing the kids grow and mature musically is pretty amazing too,” stated Andy.

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
Making the Most While Selling Your Home by SCOTT VOAK
F
or homeowners, it’s about time we had a sellers’ market. Now, how do you take advantage of it? First, you need to understand why the market is in your favor and if it is likely to last. Right now, inventory is almost at historically low levels. This is due to a decreasing number of foreclosures and short sales as well as lack of builder inventory (builders won’t be able to bring on much new housing until late in 2014 and that will be in Eastlake). So, the supply of homes is limited, but demand is also building. For the last five years, there has been little motivation (outside of the first time homebuyer tax credit) for young buyers to enter the market. Now that the market is improving, we are seeing them compete with investors at the lower end of the market which is pushing prices up. This appreciation is allowing families who have been in smaller houses and have outgrown them to move up. As a result, the under $700k market is really moving. Additionally, a large amount of foreign money is coming in to the US looking for a safe place to invest, and real estate looks like a worthier investment than bonds or equities right now. The bottom line is, this market is here to stay for a while. We will not maintain the same rate of price increases, but I do not think the market is going to fall soon. So, what do you do if you are selling? You wait as long as you can. Then you use professionals to help get your home ready (staging, landscaping, photography and video). Once that is done, you need to manage the presentation of your home to the market for maximum exposure. In addition to the MLS with professional photos and video, we use social media, email marketing, radio exposure, multiple web site exposure, YouTube and so forth. With adequate preparation and a little luck you will end up with multiple offers. At that time you will be able to evaluate the quality of the buyers, the lenders and the other agent, all while finding a buyer willing to pay you above the appraised value for your home. ¢

eet Lynda Moses. She is an original member of the Friends of the Library 4S Ranch volunteer-led group. She goes to the knitting club at the Library, is in two book clubs, and joyfully spends much time supporting and improving one of the most popular libraries in San Diego County. Lynda works hard helping people understand the value of the Friends – they are instrumental in providing funds that allowed for over 800 community programs in 2012, with a total attendance of almost 24,000 people. Lynda loves the easy access to everything in 92127. She likes to participate in many of the facilities without having to get into her car, but on Aug. 1, 2012, that outlook came to a screeching halt. Literally. Upon crossing an illuminated walk sign at the corner of Camino Del Norte and Dove Canyon Road, Lynda was hit by a truck. It forced her under its wheels, dragged her a

distance and stopped with its right rear wheel still on her body. The skin of her right arm was removed, and the bones of her entire upper body were compressed, puncturing her lungs and lacerating her liver. Were it not for Amber Mapes, who encouraged the driver to move his truck off of her as they waited for life-flight to come, Lynda feels strongly she would not be here helping at the library and now making others aware of pedestrian safety issues. Upon hearing of the accident, Lynda’s children came from all over the West and Midwest. Together, with Lynda’s husband, they maintained an around-the-clock vigil. Once it was determined she would survive, it was nearly two weeks before she was able to move her arms, and she was intubated and miserable and in more pain than anyone should ever have to endure. “Now, more than six months post injury,” Lynda told us, “I have made substantial
progress with the help of my doctors and extensive physical therapy.” According to figures published by NHTSA, in 2010 there were 4,280 pedestrian fatalities in this country – about one death every two hours – not including survivors like Lynda. “I am grateful to the many people who have helped and prayed for me,” she said. “I consider it a miracle to be alive and be able to share my story.” The Friends of the Library play a crucial role in the wonderful programs and vitality of the 4S Ranch Library, but their existence is dependent on you, the patrons of 92127. It costs a tax-deductible $15 to become an FOL member, and your membership makes available many library programs that otherwise would not be. Help grow the FOL membership roster by emailing Lynda at 4sranchfol@gmail.com.

Giving Your Bathroom a New, Fresh Look is Easier than You Think by jennifer frakes
A
bathroom remodel may sound like a daunting and time-consuming task, but installing new mirrors and shower doors is a quick and easy way to turn an outdated bathroom into a beautiful, spa-like space. Older, metal-framed shower and tub enclosures may be hiding mold and mildew and could be difficult to use. Furthermore, the existing glass may not meet current safety requirements. Frameless and semi-frameless enclosures with new hardware will beautify your bathroom, allow for ease of shower entry and exit and create a tighter seal against moisture. Replacing old, spotted mirrors with framed or unframed high-quality mirrors can complete the new look. “Today’s technology allows for some amazing options when it comes to glass and mirrors,” stated Jim Lafenhagen, Owner of Sea Breeze Glass and Construction, Inc. “We have several vendors that use water jet cutting machines to make custom shapes that were previously unavailable. Also, high tech polishers can make beautiful edges and face bevels,” explained Lafenhagen. The choices may seem overwhelming, but many contractors have showrooms that display various products and design ideas. For example, the front office at Sea Breeze guides customers through the decision-making process and provides cost estimates. Once a product and design is chosen, an in-home measurement appointment is made. Typically, these appointments can be scheduled within days. During the visit, the installers will check the opening for plumb level, measure the opening and go over hardware options. The custom glass is then ordered, and installation takes place shortly thereafter. According to Lafenhagen, in most cases two installers will come to the home for a quick and easy installation. “Our installers have 50 years of experience between them and a wealth of knowledge about the products and materials,” revealed Lafenhagen. The installers will set 1/2-inch shims on the curb of the shower/tub enclosure, set the glass on the shims, plumb the glass and mark holes for hinges. Our installers do beautiful work which is something that we are proud of. Before the installers leave the home, they will make sure that all screws are tightened and the glass is completely secure. It’s that simple – with two quick, in-home appointments, a previously dated and dingy bathroom can become a spa-like space with a fresh new look.

Wholesome Choice Self-Serve Pet Wash by LINDA FRABL
Y
ip-yip hooray! Not only has Wholesome Choice Pet Market recently opened its shop, featuring premium pet products, here in 4S Ranch (in addition to its Rancho Bernardo location), but there is also a Self-Serve Pet Wash on the premises! Owner Amy Hodges reasoned, “The demographic is different here than in Rancho Bernardo: there are more families with larger dogs that don’t necessarily have to be professionally groomed.” As much as we love our furry friends, cleaning them in our own bathtubs, or with the backyard hose for that matter, is messy and challenging. This is why the self-serve option is so ideal. Amy even admitted, “Washing a pet at home is a hassle and quite literally a pain in the backside. We designed our Self-Serve Pet Wash to be very simple to use. Our elevated tubs and all-in-one shampooing system make pet-washing a fun experience, and the pet gets squeaky clean!” The tubs have loose restraints that comfortably hold your dog, and the bathing system is devised to be used with one hand. The Self-Serve Pet Wash costs $15 and includes your choice of four hypo-allergenic and
sulfate-and-paraben-free organic shampoos and conditioners from the San Diego-based Organic Oscar brand (or if you’d prefer, you can use your own shampoos and conditioners). You are also equipped with a blow dryer, towels, combs, brushes and a rubber apron. At no additional cost, there are limited offerings of such specialty items as detangling and dematting sprays, deep conditioners, ear wipes and rinses. Amy quipped, “Just bring a dirty pet and we supply the rest.” Even though this business is not licensed to groom pets, Amy said, “Our staff will assist in any way necessary up to the point of actually doing it for you. The owner has to do all the actual bathing, drying and brushing, and so forth, but we insist that you leave the mess – that’s our job!” No appointments are necessary for the Self-Serve Pet Wash; it’s provided on a walk-in first-come, firstserved basis (appointments are recommended for pets other than dogs, however). Mention that you read about the Self-Serve Pet Wash in 92127 Magazine and Wholesome Choice Pet Market will take $3 off the price. So go ahead and embark on this hasslefree do-it-yourself pet cleaning today. ¢

No Regrets: Looking Back on Four Years at Del Norte F
or the past four years, Del Norte has been the focal point of my life. Walk up to anyone who’s been at Del Norte since the beginning and they can tell you all the little quirks and stories that no one else knows and that nobody really cares about: the time a certain chemistry teacher set off the fire alarm, or that first lockdown, or a dramatic almost-Senior Ditch Day. We’ve all been a part of a four-year bonding experience, and now that it’s ending, it feels like the world is going to stop turning. Some of us are continuing school, others are going to find a job, still others are going to serve in the armed forces, but we’re all following different paths. And though we know that in all likelihood we’ll have moved on within months of June 13, as of today the end

of high school is a Big Deal. Graduation may just be a stepping-off point, an insignificant moment in the scope of the next twenty years, but right now, it’s everything. And maybe that’s as it should be. I was born and raised in San Diego, and in half a year, I’m going to be leaving pretty much everyone and everything I’ve ever known. That’s a scary thought. But after four years spent forging a new school, exploring new ideas, and building lasting friendships, charting a new course doesn’t seem quite so intimidating. The Del Norte experience has shaped us all, and while we may have many more transformations ahead, the high school journey has armed us with the confidence and resilience to meet each new challenge with enthusiasm and determination. I realize that in the last four
years I could’ve made many different decisions and ended up in a very different place, but I have zero regrets about the path I’ve taken through high school – and choosing Del Norte was the very head of the trail. Scientists in the Making!
T
he 2nd Annual Del Sur Science Day held in early March was an absolute educational thrill for all those involved. The event allowed for the parent community of scientists to present and interact with students while sharing hands-on science activities. The 21 speakers were able to engage the 800 kids with exciting ways to learn what a future career in science may entail. The rotation of science presenters in each grade level pre-K through grade five started early in the school day. They remained static in a classroom while each grade level team rotated through every 30 minutes. All presentations were wrapped up by mid-morning so the teachers could start their own in-class science experiements in the afternoon. Nancy Nowak’s first grade class took their unit of study on arctic animals to a new level by conducting a blubber experiment. Other grades focused on their current course of study and selected specific experiments or videos to accompany. At the end of the day, it was apparent some of the kids had new ideas of what they want to be when they grow up.

Sleep for Beauty…
and Brains?
M
Z

Z Z
ost of us are aware of “Beauty Sleep” and understand that a good night’s sleep is essential to look our very best. However, according to Dr. Anoop Karippot, Director, Sleep & Snoring Center at AKANE Institute of Allergy, Asthma & Sleep Medicine, sleep is also essential for memory and cognitive functions. Whatever we learn during the day, our brain processes it and stores it in our memory as we sleep almost like a computer that is being backed-up. Research has shown a worsening of disorders like ADHD and Alzheimer’s disease with inadequate sleep. Sleeping less than five hours or more than nine hours are noted to be hazardous for health. Dr Karippot states that it’s not just the quantity of sleep but the quality of sleep that matters. Most people see poor sleep as ‘insomnia’. In his practice, he sees several common sleep problems that may be misunderstood as ‘having insomnia’. Some of the common sleep disorders that present as poor sleep patterns or insomnia are: • Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is an itchy, crawly, painful and uncomfortable sensation in the legs, usually in the evenings and/or at bedtime, which disturbs the initiation and maintenance of sleep. • Periodic Leg Movement Disorder (PLMD) involves multiple kicks, jerks or movements of the legs during sleep that are usually noticed by the bed partner. This affects the sleep quality of both parties. • REM Behavior Disorder or dream-enacting behaviors include talking, yelling, punching, kicking, sitting, jumping from bed, grabbing and such actions that occur when your brain is in REM sleep(dream sleep) but your muscles are acting out your dreams. • Sleep-walking and Sleep-talking occur usually during lighter stages of sleep. With sleep-walking, people are mostly asleep but engage

in basic routine behaviors like going to the bathroom or going to the kitchen to eat. This is more common in children but can happen in adults as well. It can be a scary experience. Night terrors or sleep terrors occur more often in young children and are frightening for the parents. The child is asleep but starts crying, screaming or yelling. They are inconsolable and have no recollection of the event in the morning. Nightmare Disorder occurs commonly at night. For some people with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or emotional issues, it may be a stressful event at night that prevents sleep due to fear of dreams. Sleep Apnea commonly manifests as loud snoring, stopping breathing, chocking or gasping during sleep, or feeling tired and sleepy during the day. Snoring, along with excessive daytime sleepiness is a strong indicator of sleep apnea. This is a dangerous disease and needs immediate medical attention. Sleep Paralysis is a sensation of being unable to move any part of your body, commonly while drifting to sleep or while waking up. Teeth Grinding, known as ‘Bruxism’ can be annoying to sleep partners but can also cause joint pain in the jaw or damage to the teeth.
According to Dr Karippot, if sleep problems persist for a few weeks and disturb the rhythm of life, it is best to seek an evaluation from a Sleep Medicine Specialist. “A stitch in time saves nine” and a simple evaluation may be the road to better health for you and your family. A home sleep study can aid in the diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) but it does not assess other sleep problems that may be the predominant issue. Nothing replaces the good old-fashioned belief of “Seeing the Doctor First!” ¢
