College Bound

believe that milestones account for a great deal of who we are as a person. Some milestones are good. Some are not so good. One might categorize them as achievements, while others see them more as benchmarks in life. When we aren’t in the midst of experiencing a landmark life event, we are usually working our way towards it. Excitement often builds. Anticipation grows as the event gets closer. What was once so far away is now in sight. It’s very rare when a major life event sneaks up on us – but it does happen from time to time (good or bad). This month marks the culmination of a 17-year-long journey. While our family is not alone – thousands of families send their children off to college each year – it certainly feels special and unique to my small family in our corner of the world. Our beautiful and intelligent daughter is college-bound. The same little girl that we taught to ride a bike. The little girl that we began coaching in soccer at the age of four, eventually developing into a speedster that could outrun nearly every opponent down the sideline when given the opportunity. Homework assignments. Board games at the table. Long philosophical discussions about friends, boyfriends, and life in general – whether she wanted to hear what her mother and I had to say or not. We will miss this. We will miss it all. I think I might be somewhat of a selfish person when it comes to family. I don’t apologize for this. On one hand, we want her to go and begin her journey of adulthood and independence – after all, isn’t that the whole point of being a parent? Isn’t that our job? Yes, I am selfish. We will miss the comfort and joy of seeing her around the house on a daily basis. We will miss having groups of her friends (some going all the way back to early elementary school) hanging out around the house. We will miss knowing that she is safe and sound in her bedroom. We will even miss watching her sit on the couch and speed-text what appears to be dozens of people at once. We might even miss some of the sibling bickering that inevitably takes place between the younger kiddos and her. But we are very proud of her. We are excited for her. A big life event is upon her. We will help her move into her new dorm this week. As always, we will very much be a part our little girl’s new journey that she is starting. Although she will still be close to home, she will still have her independence and get the full college experience by living on campus. This is something that we wanted for her. To our daughter Ashley (a few bits of advice): Go get ‘em. Challenge yourself. Believe in yourself. Learn as much as you can, then learn more. Simply show up – it’s more than half the battle. Always finish what you start. Be your own best friend. Live with integrity. Most importantly, cherish the moment. P.S. We lightheartedly keep telling her that she can’t bring her laundry home on the weekends (they have laundry facilities in the dorms). But truth be told, doing a couple of loads of laundry on the weekends is a very small price to pay for us to ensure that she comes back home to visit regularly.

riya Avadhanam is one well-rounded 7th grader. Hailing from the 4S Ranch community, Sriya attends Oak Valley Middle School and favors math and science. “From my childhood, math always amazed me by taking me to the solution for every problem. Science is what we live today. Every day there is more to learn, explore, and enjoy from scientific inventions.” Aside from school, Sriya spends a lot of time engaging in her hobbies of swimming, Indian classical dance, gymnastics, and drawing. Shortly after learning how to swim at age 4, Sriya moved to a swim team. She professed, “It gave me lot of confidence and taught me teamwork.”

Sriya Avadhanam (12) Oak Valley Middle School 7 Mom – Sireesha Avadhanam, Dad – Phani Avadhanam Brinda Avadhanam (7) My favorite places are my school OVMS, hiking trails, water parks, and shopping malls.

When it comes to dance, Sriya explained, "My mom is a trained Indian classical dancer who graduated from two different styles of dance: Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. I was mesmerized by her performance at the age of 3. I asked her, ‘when can I perform like you,’ and here I am performing Indian classical dance, Kuchipudi.” For the past seven years her mother, Sireesha, has been training her daughter in the art and Sriya has given almost fifty performances. In her training she has learned a lot of important lessons on life, including controlled actions, discipline, body-mind coordination for rhythm, and synchronization with music; but for Sriya one thing is certain – she was amazed that you can express your emotions without using words. She has gone on to compete for local Indian dance competitions and won prizes in her age group for the Southern California Dance Competitions. Sriya also learned to play piano in the 1st grade and heavily competes in San Diego County. Outside of performing, Sriya enjoys lending a hand. She beamed, “I would go participate in nonprofit events and help community services to raise money for social causes. There is more to do and I hope to spend more time on giving back to the community.” When asked about her family, Sriya tells us that her parents emigrated from India and that she has a younger sister. She stated proudly, “My parents inspire me the most. They taught me a lot of concepts like believing in yourself, standing up for yourself, planning ahead, following dharma, and that hard work is the key to success.” For Sriya, her career goals entail becoming an engineer and a patent attorney. She hopes to attend MIT and Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. ¢

Dr. Moser and Dr. Lindsay Pfeffer will give CASH for your CANDY, paying a dollar for each pound of candy surrendered and donate the proceeds to your child’s school. The surrendered candy will be donated to the military troops and the San Diego Rescue Mission. ZCODE MEDIA’S SUMMER INTERNS SHARE THE INSIDE LOOK

H

ere at ZCode Media, we love it when we can open our doors for guests to come and explore behind the scenes. This summer we invited three interns, all students from 92127, and gave them an inside look at how our magazines are put together. Jeena Lee, Ben Friedl, and Chelsea Song not only brought some young flair to our office, they also disclosed a unique perspective for their community. They even assisted in helping us brainstorm ideas for this very cover feature, focusing on the five year anniversary of their own high school. In return, we helped open their eyes to a whole new side of San Diego. They not only worked on their home zip code of 92127 Magazine, but were fully enveloped in the ten other zip codes that ZCode’s magazines call home. “After being in so much contact with all

the different zip codes ZCode covers, I have learned so much more about San Diego and its communities,” Chelsea shared. “I found that all the zip codes have something different to offer, but are inherently the same in the way they promote communal affairs and a sense of togetherness.” Jeena expressed that her experience only furthered her interest in journalism. “In the past, I had heard stories on both ends of the spectrum, where people discovered a secret passion or a defined distaste via an internship, and that was what I was hoping to find here. My interest for journalism definitely grew, and I do not regret a single minute I spent under the vent in the ZCode Media headquarters.” “Internships may look good for college, but if you aren’t enjoying yourself, what’s the point?” Ben challenged. “As an intern,

I expected the daunting task of receiving the jobs that would be very time consuming. However, thanks to our supervisors we received many exercises that not only made us better writers, but also gave us invaluable real world working experience that will stick with us for the rest of our lives.” All three agreed it was not a summer wasted and that they would carry on the skills and lessons they learned from us to wherever their future may bring them. While they didn’t always get the biggest projects and received critiques on their work, we certainly learned from them about the patience and focus that goes into each task, and that it doesn’t hurt to take a step back to see the larger impact of your one small contribution. And, of course, always strive to make the best magazines that people want to read. ¢

LOCAL DESIGNER KATHERINE DAOU LAUNCHES HER OWN CALIFORNIAINSPIRED FASHION LINE

by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo by Spark Photography

T

hough 92127 resident Katherine Daou has loved fashion since she was a little girl, it was her foray into the world of retail as a teen and her decision to attend the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in downtown San Francisco that confirmed that fashion was more than a passing fancy. “I started in retail when I was 16 years old, and since then I have observed the apparel accessories market and built my business sense. After years of working in retail with contemporary apparel, including denim, I finally left my comfortable position in retail and am taking a risk by adding a line of my own to the market,” said Katherine. Her exposure to the design side of the industry during her studies combined with her retail experience, led to her decision to launch daou denim co., a unique line of jeans for women and men. Katherine’s upcoming Winter Collection 2014 is inspired by the California lifestyle, especially that of the central coast. “I spend a lot of time on the central coast because my family has a winery up in Paseo Robles. It’s so beautiful there, and I took everything from the colors, the air, and

the feel of the cities and of the people and brought it to my collection. I wanted to bring a more contemporary feel to a very farm-centered area of the state,” explained Katherine. In the coming months and years, she hopes to grow daou denim co. into a more comprehensive fashion line, and is prepared for the hard work that goes into building a brand. She is also currently working with a major Mexican/American television network on a project to use her design talents to help people in need. While she may have a fondness for other areas of California, Katherine is happy to call the Del Sur/Santaluz area her home. “I love living here because you get the sense of living out in a beautiful European village, but you can drive ten minutes to Del Mar or Rancho Bernardo,” related Katherine. In addition to loving where she lives, Katherine loves painting and all types of music. She also enjoys spending time with friends and her family, which includes two cats, four younger siblings, and her parents. “I am the eldest of five kids with only one boy – Joseph, the second to youngest. We’re a loud, crazy, and hilarious family,” revealed Katherine. ¢

Residents enjoyed a traditional spread of Hawaiian food while being treated to raucous entertainment from fire dancers, hula dancers, and drummers from Motu Nehenehe Polynesian Dancers. Dressed in leis, grass skirts, and flowery attire, residents sipped on signature drinks, spent time with friends and family, and embraced the island way; even if only for an evening or two. ¢

92127 ATHLETE TRIES OUT FOR INTERNATIONAL TEAM

On

paper, Jake Mitten is an average boy. Thirteen years old and a student at Oak Valley Middle School, he enjoys social studies, learning about history, and plays football in his spare time. But Jake Mitten had a truly unique opportunity – trying out for the USA National Development Team in order to qualify for the International Bowl in February, pitting the US national team against Canada’s. “I was selected to the USA Developmental Game because I went to a USA camp at Helix High School,” Jake explained. “They chose over 150 kids in my age group from seventeen different camps throughout the USA.” This hodge-podge of different footballers from across the nation came together in Canton, OH to compete against each other in good sportsmanship and earn a spot on the international team. Jake added, “My experience during that week in Ohio was some of the best memories I will have in football. I got to meet players and coaches from all over the USA. I got to room with players from North Carolina, Northern California, and New Mexico.” Jake and “thirty of [his] brothers” even got to play in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Stadium, and he used his varied skills as defensive end from Mira Mesa Midget Football to make an impression on the field. While the official USA National Team will be announced as we get closer to the International Bowl, Jake looks forward to continuing his football growth in the fall, and even looks forward to playing in high school and college. He’s a future Aztec in the making, and as Jake said, “I want to play for SDSU.” ¢

About the Chef

Prepare grill on high heat. Season fish with lemon, crushed garlic, kosher salt and pepper. Grill fish on medium-high heat for approximately 5 minutes per side, flipping once. It’s best to undercook rather than overcook, as the fish will continue to cook once it’s removed from the grill. While fish is being grilled, warm tortillas to desired crispness, prepare cilantro, avocado slices, taco sauce, and all accompaniments. Prepare the fish taco sauce by mixing all taco sauce ingredients together. Remove fish from grill and prepare tacos: tortilla, cabbage, cilantro, tomatoes, fish sauce, avocado slices, and garnish with limes on the side. Serve warm and enjoy! Makes: 4 servings Total Time: 30 minutes (10 minute cook, 20 minute prep)

RB’S ANNUAL BEER FEST RETURNS TO HISTORIC ROOTS

S

an Diego is home to many breweries, turning the finest city in America into one of the best cities to taste a unique brew. A local could spend days or even weeks trying out all the different beers that are available in the county. Well, look no further than the Rancho BEERnardo Festival this Sept. 27 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Sikes Adobe Historic Farmstead. Hosted by the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary in partnership with Urge Gastropub, the gathering will mix funds with foam in support of the many nonprofits that the Rotary sponsors. Rancho BEERnardo Co-Chair Gordy Erickson explained, “It is the only beer fest in the Rancho Bernardo area. Now in our third year, we are changing our format to emphasize IPA beers. This will be the only IPA beer fest in San Diego County.” For their third year, the event was moved to Sikes Adobe Historic Farmstead, as Gordy explained it was the “original town of Bernardo. The farmstead represents the legacy of Old California out of which developed the towns of Rancho Bernardo and San Diego.” Also new this year is raising the tasting limit to fifteen tastings for $30, featuring fifty IPAs from local breweries, a complimentary tasting glass, live music, and an interactive People’s Choice Award for best IPA. When asked what he was looking forward to most for this beer fest, Gordy shared, “A great time enjoying the some of the best beers available in a historic outdoor setting as we turn the Sikes Adobe Farmstead into the Town of BEERnardo for the day.” Head to www.ranchobeernardofestival.com to learn more about the history of beer, brush up on IPA, and purchase tickets. ¢

hile San Diegans are no stranger to experiencing wildfire, we are incredibly grateful to have such responsive and fast-acting emergency services in our neighborhoods. In recognition of their work to protect homes during the recent Bernardo Fire, City Councilman Mark Kersey and the Peñasquitos Emergency Response Council hosted a Thank You BBQ in South Village Neighborhood Park for San Diego’s finest. Many first responders came out to join the community, including 92127’s own Fire Station 46. Councilman Kersey, San Diego Police Department Chief Shelley Zimmerman, and San Diego Fire-Rescue Assistant Chief Brian Fennessy were all in attendance. VOLUNTEER PARI HEKMAT LIVES TO HELP OTHERS by KELLEY GUSICH | photos by Spark Photography

O

n an auspicious day in 1984, a customer walked in to Pari Hekmat’s custom design clothing shop in La Jolla and offered Pari an opportunity that would change her life forever. Pari came from Iran to America in 1981 and had never heard of Mother Teresa. This customer took her to a church in National City, where the inspirational icon was visiting. Though the church was full of eager worshippers, Mother Teresa walked up to Pari, crying, and hugged and kissed her. “She told me I had very positive energy,” Pari said, “and that she could see in me a future of writing books that someday will help people and bring them together.” Pari had never written a book before, or even thought of that in her future. The concept of serving others was not new to her, however. “I live my life trying to help people,” she explained. “For anyone who needs help, you have to be always ready, like a soldier. You need to always have love in your heart for people.” She lives her days demonstrating this: every afternoon for the past twenty-five years she prepares things, food, fruit, and helpful items, to distribute all over town. To follow Mother Teresa’s calling, she started writing books in 2000. Pari has five books in the 4S Ranch Library, the most recent published on March 26, 2014. The books are written in Farsi, and Pari’s wish is that they’ll someday be published in every language, so that people could learn and spread her message of love. The Library is another element of Pari’s volunteerism. She has been involved there for the past five years, as a Friends of the Library Board member, volunteer cook and all-around helping hand. Her past working life inspired current volunteer projects as well. From 1982 through 1992 she owned a store called Paris Original Fashion Design, where her handmade custom beadwork brought customers from around the globe. She designed dresses for pageants like Miss San Diego Del Mar and Miss California Santa Cruz. She even designed for the Queen of Thailand! Nowadays she designs for smaller, but equally important patrons of Rady Children’s Hospital. Twice a year she fills baskets with handmade shawls, hats, scarves and blankets and brings them to the children. She loves creating, cooking, and giving to others, and for the past seven years Pari has been a welcome addition to 92127. ¢ Name: Community: Volunteer Affiliations: Occupation:

September is Rail Safety Month in California, and Operation Lifesaver would like to remind everyone to exercise caution around railroads. Operation Lifesaver, a nonprofit dedicated to rail safety public education, has partnered with federal safety agencies and railroads around the nation to launch their newest campaign, See Tracks? Think Train! Operation Lifesaver stresses the importance of this campaign as, according to the Preliminary Federal Railroad Administration data, “pedestrian fatalities and injuries on or near railroad tracks have increased 7.7 percent from 2012.” The campaign’s goal is to increase awareness about unsafe pedestrian and driver practices and behavior near railroad tracks. To see how you can get involved with this campaign or to learn more information visit www.seetracksthinktrain.org.

Monterey Ridge Elementary School (MRES) takes pride in their budding students, who in turn have fostered a fantastic garden. As the new school year starts, the MRES garden could use an extra hand. Students will sign up with their class throughout the year to care for the garden, but volunteers are needed to supervise, keep supplies and tools organized, and demonstrate gardening concepts. No green thumb experience required! MRES Garden Coordinator Nicole Moore mentioned, “For people with green thumbs or a love of gardening, extra hands are always needed to help keep the beds weeded.” Nicole also listed a few needed supplies: bagged planting seed, garden tools, organic non-GMO seeds, art supplies, and a volunteer with a pick-up truck to move bulk items. If interested in donating or volunteering email Nicole at nicolebythesea@gmail.com.

Creative Minds to Watch

In the Art category, Angela Chen received Best of Show, and Claire Chung, Claire Luo, and Cynthia Wang were recognized with Coordinator’s Awards. Morgan Mueller also received a Coordinator’s Award for her work in the Quilting category.

Moser Orthodontics’ Candy Buy-Back

October is almost here which means Halloween is right around the corner. One would think this is the holiday that dentists dread, but Moser Orthodontics would like to donate your unwanted candy to a great cause. Candy can be dropped off at Moser Orthodontics in exchange for cash – $1 per pound of candy donated. The staff at Moser are excited that all proceeds will go back to local schools, having donated over $11,800 to schools through this same fundraiser in the past. And as for the candy, every pound will be donated to military troops and the San Diego Rescue Mission. So put down that extra candy bar and encourage your children to donate their candy for cash after Halloween. Moser Orthodontics is located at 14701 Via Bettona, Suite 205 and will be collecting candy during office hours between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. from Nov. 3 through 5.

Kindred Holds Open House of the Year

While open houses are the norm when in the process of selling a home, Kindred Real Estate went above and beyond for a particular home in Poway. Visitors were shuttled to the home for free and given private tours by well-trained staff. The nearly 13,000 square foot house in Heritage Estates featued a movie room, game room, massage and steam room, and more. “Rarely do homes of this caliber open their doors to the general public,” said Anthony Montroy, Director of Marketing for Kindred Real Estate. “The event was amazing. We had ninety-six visitors to the open house, everyone loved that we had such a high staffing level so they could ask detailed questions.” He also added that they included live demonstrations of the various features of the house. TOO BUSY FOR

TWO DENTAL VISITS? BOLD SMILES GIVE THE GIFT OF TIME AND GREAT TEETH by MICHELLE TREMBLAY

T

echnology today is changing our everyday lives. Technology also is impacting dentistry in new and exciting ways. Cutting-edge innovations in dental instruments mean less time in the dental chair, less discomfort and more satisfying results. For over eight years, Dr. Jeremy Bold and his team at Bold Smiles have been creating beautiful smiles in 4S Ranch. “I enjoy having the opportunity to enhance a person’s smile,” explained Dr. Bold. “Sometimes people might want their teeth to be whiter, others don’t like the alignment of their teeth, while some just don’t like the look or shape of their teeth. It is very rewarding to help people get the smile they have always wanted.” A unique feature that Dr. Bold offers is the ability to achieve dramatic results, often in a single visit. Utilizing cutting-edge technology called ‘CEREC’, he is able to use a computer and 3D software to design and manufacture strong, beautiful, porcelain

crowns and veneers that mimic nature, all in his office. “It is like a 3D printer. I am able to talk with my patients and listen to what they want to change about their smile. I can then design it right in front of them on the computer and make the restoration right there,” described Dr. Bold. “Although I have made hundreds, if not thousands of crowns and veneers in this manner, it still fascinates me to watch the tooth emerge from a solid block of porcelain, and look exactly like the one that I designed on the computer.” The tooth which is made is then characterized and glazed to look perfectly natural and is then bonded strongly into the patient’s mouth. The result is a restoration that is done in a single visit, eliminating the need to come back for a second visit, wear something temporary, or best yet, get numb a second time. “Time is increasingly precious, and we recognize that most people don’t see the dentist office as a favorite pastime,” related Dr. Bold. “Using the CEREC equipment we can provide a great looking smile

AT-A-GLANCE to our patients in a single visit, letting them get back to the more important things in life.” At the same time that the procedure is being done, most patients prefer to watch a movie using high-resolution virtual reality glasses. An extensive library of video options provide patients with a “personal movie theater” as a distraction, and a great way to catch up with the newest releases or their favorite movies and TV shows while getting their dental work completed. “This equipment greatly enhances the efficiency, accuracy, and visual appeal of the restorations we can provide,” said Dr. Bold. “Patients will benefit from more timely and more comfortable care that puts them back on track quickly. I am optimistic that the availability of CEREC restorations will help patients overcome their fears and time restraints, when they see how fast and painless the treatment process can be. I believe that everyone should be able to look their best and smile confidently. Whether it is a single tooth, a full mouth, or anything in between, I know that I, along with my CEREC, make that possible.” 

STRONG Del Norte High School’s Nighthawk Nation Endures photos by TYLER MCELHANEY

F

ive years ago there was an empty lot at the end of Nighthawk Lane, where the first skeleton of Del Norte High School (DNHS) was rising from the ground. Principal Greg Mizel was there and recalled how much anticipation and excitement there was for the new school. Now boasting a student body of over 1,900 and establishing themselves as an academic and athletic beacon in the school district, DNHS has grown much and will continue to grow. Read along as we chat about the growth at DNHS with Principal Mizel and a few faculty members who have been at DNHS since the school was just a blueprint on paper.

Q&A with Principal

What is your role as principal at DNHS? Honestly, I’m responsible for everything here. Everything. Del Norte is like a small city; it is a hub of activity. There are students and parents on this campus almost 24/7. Thankfully, I work with a very talented and committed team of professional people who are uncommonly dedicated. From grounds and facilities to food and nutrition, from classroom instruction to ASB and athletics, Del Norte is supported by people (classified and certificated) who genuinely care about the well being of each and every one of our students. What is your responsibility to the students on campus? It is my responsibility to ensure every student attending DNHS graduates prepared for his or her future – college and career ready. When we do our job well, our students graduate with a wide variety of exciting options to consider after high school. What might surprise people most about you? I graduated from high school with a 2.07 GPA. Aside from my interest in athletics (I played sports year-round) and seeing my friends, I didn’t really care that much about school. I wasn’t ever really challenged or directly encouraged, and I didn’t really see the relevance of learning. Thankfully, that all changed for me in college. What does DNHS’ mission mean to you? We have a responsibility to inspire passion in our students. High school is all about exploration. I encourage our students to extend themselves, taking courses that challenge and interest them. Some of our students find their niche in world languages; others find it in science, history, literature and writing, or math. Some discover joy in art, music, and in performance. Others still, find outlets for their creativity in clubs like Robotics, DECA, Science Olympiad, Speech and Debate, PLUS, Link Crew, Nighthawk Nation, or FCA, among others (we had over sixty clubs that met regularly on campus last year). Some students love to compete. We offer them an opportunity to play almost every sport imaginable – on the courts and fields

Greg Mizel and mats, and in the pool. Some students discover they love to lead. They participate in ASB, publish magazines and newspapers, and organize community events and volunteering opportunities. All of our students are gifted and talented – every single one of them. They simply need outlets to discover their genius. How has DNHS changed since its founding? In the last five years, we’ve grown from supporting 750 students to now serving almost 2,000. We’ve become a truly comprehensive high school offering our students lots of exciting opportunities to explore their interests as well as to develop their talents. Though much larger today, Del Norte still enjoys a small-school feeling. Students and staff enjoy strong connections with one another. Honestly, it is hard to remain anonymous on our campus for so long. Who were the key players in building DNHS from the beginning? Former Superintendent Dr. Don Phillips and his cabinet, and the original DNHS Leadership Team: Cara Jenkins, Juli Cheskaty, Jim Krenz, Michelle Lanzi-Sheaman, Cheri Kuptz, Neal Curry, Melva Musico, Mike Giaime, Barbara Chiment, Joe Ruggieri, Jocbethem Tahapary, Kelly Burke, and Christine Biggs. Who were the key players who established the PTSA and Foundation? Debbie Ludwin has been our PTSA president four of the last five years. Recognized as a volunteer-of-the-year, she has been simply fabulous. Teresa Maltese was our first Foundation president. Since 2012, Jeff Erwin has served in that capacity. The PTSA provides volunteers who gift hundreds of service hours to Del Norte annually while the Foundation provides additional funding to our school – gifting almost $200,000 YTD to DNHS. How does DNHS prepare students for their future academically? The trimester system allows our students maximum flexibility. A student can take as many as fifteen courses in a school year versus only twelve on the traditional semester

system. Students can accelerate or remediate as needed. They also have the option to go fast or slow (taking an off-roll class at the beginning or end of the day). One cool story I love to share: in the graduating class of 2014, we had over fifty students who came to us as freshmen enrolled in Algebra 1 who left us as seniors having successfully completed one or more advanced placement math classes (Calculus and/or Statistics). That kind of outcome (completing five to six years of math in four years) is only possible in an environment that embraces open access and accommodates flexible scheduling. What is the most rewarding aspect of being principal at DNHS? The best part of launching Del Norte has been establishing the school culture and all the early traditions. It’s been a heavy responsibility to carry, at times, but it has also been a tremendous honor. Del Norte is an ambitious and hard working place. It likes to win, and it does often. It is inclusive, it is relational, it is everything I had imagined it might be and so much more! I love this place! The most challenging aspect? Opening in 2009, in the midst of a significant financial crisis, was very difficult. We had to open DNHS quickly, and we had to work efficiently. We had one year (2008-2009) to develop a distinctive vision, establish a community presence, and communicate with our stakeholders. There was very little margin for error. Out-of-the-gate we had to navigate a controversy – fighting to retain a smallerthan-expected sophomore class. We had a bare-bones staff. None of my teacher-leaders were released from their teaching assignments during the 2008-2009 school year. They all

I was saddened to lose support (as a direct result of the fiscal situation facing our District) for initiatives like the 1:1 Laptop Program and the International Baccalaureate program. Still, those early challenges and disappointments helped to forge team Del Norte together. What is your favorite aspect of DNHS and the campus so far? I love watching our students grow and mature. They come to us as freshmen – many young and still immature. They leave us as seniors greatly changed – highly regarded and widely admired. A lot happens in 2,000,000 minutes! What traditions have the student body established during the past five years? Global Awareness Week is one tradition that comes to mind that is distinctively Del Norte. It’s a week devoted to living beyond ourselves. Students and staff spend the week learning about local, national, and global issues and

concerns. We hear from speakers, raise money for worthy causes, and volunteer. Night-atthe-Museum is another DNHS highlight. Each trimester electives students showcase their art work in creative and thoughtful displays. Hundreds of people walk through the exhibits, interact with our student artists, and enjoy student performances. Our monthly Character Recognition Program is also quite unique. Jointly supported by the PTSA and Foundation, this effort has recognized hundreds of students over the years for who they are vs. for what they do. Nighthawk Nation, an ASB club devoted to increasing school spirit, has also had a huge impact on our campus in recent years. Blue and Green Fridays are awesome, and attendance at football, basketball, and volleyball games is way up. What’s the teacher/student relationship like at DNHS? How has it changed? If you ask ten students, randomly, to name their favorite teacher on campus, you’ll hear six to eight

different teachers named – everytime. Every teacher on this campus is somebody’s favorite teacher! I’ve never worked at a school like Del Norte in this regard. Our teachers are highly skilled, highly relational, and highly successful supporting our students and their success. What sports are offered at DNHS? How have they evolved since the beginning? We opened only offering the traditional sports and only competing at the freshmen and JV levels. Today, we offer students almost every athletic option imaginable. Students attending Del Norte can play football, soccer, field hockey, or rugby. They can compete in baseball and softball, roller hockey, gymnastics, water polo, or lacrosse. We have cross country, track and field, basketball, boys and girls volleyball, swimming and diving, wrestling, golf, tennis, and more. In just our first four years competing at the varsity level, the Nighthawks have won thirty-six league titles and five CIF championships! What clubs or afterschool activities are offered? How have they changed since the beginning? Students have over sixty clubs to explore. Almost every interest and/or hobby imaginable is represented among the choices available to our students. How has the school mascot evolved? It hasn’t. We have strict logo standards. Our plan is to keep it simple. Think Chevrolet, Coca-Cola, and Apple computers.

How can students become more involved on campus moving forward? Join a club – or charter one! Play a sport, audition for the choir, act in a play, write for the school newspaper, help create the Yearbook, adopt a cause, volunteer, tutor, form a study group, attend school functions, cheer for your friends, build a float, build a robot, earn a medal in the Science Olympiad, Academic League, or Mock Trial, join the band or orchestra, donate blood, donate food, donate clothing, even CrossFit! In short… get after it! Fleas jump. Elephants roam. Nighthawks soar! Is there any exciting news or updates about DNHS for this upcoming school year? We have two new assistant principals, one new counselor, a new ASB director, and lots of new teachers joining our staff this next school year. As amazing as these first five years have been here at Del Norte, I’m absolutely certain that this next school year will be our very best yet!

MEET

Jim Krenz, Math Department Chair

How has DNHS differed from other schools you’ve taught at? The most important feature of DNHS that I think is unique is our focus, among the staff, on a concept called Home Court Advantage. At it’s most basic level Home Court Advantage is about recognizing that when pushed to do great things conflict will naturally arise and that this conflict should be resolved at the lowest level through trust, open communication, and an understanding that we are all committed to each other’s success at all times. By continuing to spend time on fostering the qualities of Home Court Advantage the moral

among our staff and teachers is extremely high... high moral fosters collaboration which in turn improves instruction – with our students being the ultimate benefactors of our focus on Home Court Advantage. What is your most memorable moment from DNHS? Speaking at DNHS first graduation ceremony in our third year (I was representing our teachers as Teacher of the Year). It was an absolute honor to address the students and their parents.

Cara Jenkins, English Teacher

What was your motivation for joining the DNHS team? Before DNHS, I was teaching at Poway High, and I really loved it there. However, I remember moving to 4S Ranch and seeing the “Site of Future High School” sign that stood in what was then just a field of trees and bushes. I thought it would be really great to teach in the same community that I lived. Some teachers don’t like seeing students outside the classroom, but I love running into students at Panera, Ralphs, and down at the 4S Ranch Sports Park. It makes me feel like a bigger part of the community. When it’s my neighbors’ children sitting in my classroom, kids I’ve known since moving to 4S Ranch, it makes my work feel more meaningful, more personal. Also, knowing that my own kids are future Nighthawks makes me even more committed to the school. My investment in DNHS runs deep.

What do you love most about teaching at DNHS? Hands down, I love working with our remarkable students. They are so inspiring. They have such passion and dedication. They are interested in the world around them and committed to their own betterment. Plus, they are funny, witty, and creative. They sincerely want a great education. Knowing this puts the pressure on me! If a student comes to my class wanting to learn, I would never want to disappoint them.

Juli Cheskaty, Life Science Teacher

Students describe you as very energetic. What do you like most about interacting with the students? They energize me. I open the first day usually singing Pat Benetar’s “All Fired Up.” Maybe that gets them hooked. I got into this profession because I wanted to make an impact on my students like my teachers made on me. My main goal is to teach kids to be positive members of society, have self-respect and high expectations. I think I communicate this well to students and let them know I will be there to support them 100%. I really enjoy hearing about their accomplishments and celebrating each little win they have.

What subject do you teach? What advice do you have for incoming students to DNHS? I teach biology and AP biology. My advice would be to have an open mind, trust the process and know that your teachers have the best intentions to make sure you are prepared for anything you want to do in life. We are here to be your support so make sure you communicate with each of us. Take initiative and be proactive. This is your education. Don’t be a bystander.

Marika Murch, DNHS Volunteer

What role did you hold at DNHS? I had an ADHOC volunteer role at DNHS that was not associated with PTSA. What did your role entail? My role as a volunteer was unique in that I was part of the initial planning community prior to the opening of the school. The initial team of DNHS personnel was very small and they need basic administration help. My dear friend, Janet Drew, and I assisted with a variety of office duties during the construction phase, helping out with data entry of student information to coordinating volunteers for the “Save our Sophomores” campaign. We were also a part of every registration day and athletic health night since 2009.

During the first year, I volunteered at the reception desk, designed, and coordinated spirit wear, and implemented student store protocols. In 2010, I started running the football concession stand, with a team of dedicated parents. Most of them are my friends who had been volunteering together since elementary school. We call ourselves “The Mighty Mamas” and are proud to have raised close to $15,000 during last year’s football season.

Although my daughter is no longer a student at DNHS, I have a lot of fond memories of great times spent in the early stages working with a great team of bright and passionate teachers and staff. It took more than a village to create this dynamic learning environment. The success of DNHS can be attributed to the team effort of staff, parents, and students alike.

MEET

Mike Giaime, Athletic Director

How have DNHS sports evolved over the past five years? Our student-athletes have taken personal responsibility for the success of our teams. We are highly competitive winning thirty-six league titles and five CIF Championships in nineteen different sports. The Nighthawks accomplished this in four Varsity seasons. This speaks volumes for our coaches and student-athletes and their commitment to our motto, “Earned Never Given.” The amount of hard work that each student-athlete and coach puts in is astonishing.

What sport(s) would you like to add, if any? The sports we offer are student-athlete driven. Since we opened we have added gymnastics and rugby, there have been discussions about adding sand volleyball – we are happy to support new programs if our student-athletes want to participate and compete. The major obstacle is funding. The athletic programs must fundraise about 95% of the overall cost to run programs. A comprehensive program like Del Norte’s Athletic Department is expensive; the budget we are provided by PUSD is about 5% of the overall cost.

Do you have any advice for students interested in school sports? The best advice I can give kids that are interested in high school athletics:

7.

Believe in yourself, commit to yourself, and ask yourself every day, “did my efforts today allow me to ‘win’”?

8.

Focus on the positives and reflect on the negatives.

9.

Student-athletes are leaders on campus that accept the responsibility and make positive choices for the future inside and outside of school.

1.

Make a commitment to your schoolwork. Study hard, manage your time, and take personal responsibility for your actions.

2.

Prepare your body and mind for the rigors of daily practices, competition, and late nights.

3.

Lift weights, condition your body, and adopt healthy lifestyle choices when it comes to your diet.

4.

Accept the fact you are not a “normal” high school student. You will be faced with choices and at times you will have to give up or sacrifice “social time” to follow your passion to be the best.

5.

You can’t worry about things you can’t control, you can control your effort and attitude.

6.

The choices you make today are the results you reap tomorrow. You will have support from your teachers, coaches, and administrators – you just have to ask for help.

10. Embrace your four years at Del Norte, how will you be remembered when you graduate? Where will you leave your “mark”? 

arly childhood education sets a solid foundation for lifelong learning. Selecting the preschool where a child’s journey will begin is an important choice for parents. At Infusion Christian Preschool, the focus is on building strong young minds, bodies, and hearts. Starting this fall, families will find an updated preschool. The program that originally began in 1971 under the Community Reformed Church has just completed renovations, covering everything from safety features to staffing. Combining the best early childhood practices with a safe and nurturing environment, Infusion creates the space for a child to grow. The school’s center complements their vision. The Escondido campus, located on the Infusion Church property, includes citrus trees, a butterfly garden, a natural shaded play center, and an outdoor amphitheater. “We have designed our center to be clean, calming, comfortable, and cheerful,” stated Angie Winkler, the school’s director.

Angie joined the team as the new director and brings eighteen years of experience to the position. She has worked in preschool settings from suburban Orange County to Slovakia, Europe. Angie’s exposure to a to a variety of schools and philosophies has allowed her to combine the best of each one. Infusion Christian Preschool “blends classical education with hands-on learning, solidly Christian curriculum, with the beauty of nature, in a warm and loving environment,” Angie related. With schedules available between 6:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., children ages 2 to 5 explore phonics, math, science, art, music, and movement. “Infusion Christian Preschool is dedicated to equipping our students spiritually, academically, socially, and physically,” shared Angie. TIPS ON HOW TO USE WATER WISELY THIS SUMMER

by TORI MORRISON

A

ccording to the City of San Diego, June 1 marked a change in the amount of irrigation time San Diegans are allotted in order to accommodate the demanding warmer days of summer. The City has declared, “From June 1 through Oct. 31, when the weather is hotter, the public must water their landscape prior to 10 a.m. in the morning, and not until after 6 p.m. in the evening, to lessen evaporation and get the most out of their water use.” Steps can also be made to conserve water within the household. Here are some tips on how to use water more efficiently at home.

1.

Plug the sink or bath instead of running the water to rinse your razor, or wait for the water to adjust to your desired temperature.

6.

Check your hoses, faucets and appliances regularly for leaks.

2.

Use your dishwasher. Dishwashers save more water and energy than washing dishes by hand. Energy Star dishwashers are more energy efficient than older models, so they end up reducing water waste. If washing dishes by hand, scrap food in the trash before washing, plug the sink, and then wash.

3.

Avoid playing with recreational water toys that require a considerable amount of water. Try water guns or water balloons for some fun in the sun.

4.

Instead of using the hose to clean sidewalks, garages and driveways, grab a broom.

5.

Recycle water. If you drop ice cubes, or need to get rid of water you used to steam vegetables, don’t waste it. You can use the water to feed plants, or turn the excess water into a soup.

54 • 92127Magazine.com • September | October 2014

7.

Place tissues into a trash can instead of flushing them.

8.

Purchase a plastic or aluminum water bottle. It will cut down on the amount of water you waste washing glasses.

9.

Wash your car on your lawn. That way your lawn will get watered at the same time.

10.

Join a community pool instead of wasting water on a personal pool at home. ¢

endra Koder became an Xtend Barre studio owner because of her love of dance and personal results. She maintained a fit, healthy lifestyle her entire life, but after delivering triplets she thought she couldn’t regain her core strength. Xtend Barre classes helped her tone her entire body, manage stress, and classes were addicting and fun. She looked forward to every class and wanted to help others achieve their best health and self-worth too. Ultimately, Kendra discovered, “Women and moms are busier than ever. It is so important to find a type of exercise that keeps you motivated and consistent. When women feel strong and healthy, the mental and physical benefits are endless.” Xtend Barre is a boutique fitness studio featuring the diverse barre workout combining dance with Pilates at the ballet barre to give people a long, strong, and lean physique. Classes at Xtend Barre are appropriate for people of any age, size, gender and fitness level and no dance experience is required. Modifications and advancements during classes allow beginners and advanced clients to work out simultaneously. Lee, a client, shared, “This place makes you feel truly comfortable and motivated to want to come back for more! The instructors are talented, thoughtful and just full of energy.” Another client, Rayna, expressed, “In the past five months I lost thirtyseven pounds, built muscles I didn’t have before and now I feel stronger than ever. Xtend Barre is something I can see myself doing forever!”

Xtend Barre offers five class formats daily and two specialty classes quarterly to keep the body and mind challenged. The signature Xtend Barre class is sixty minutes combining dance grace and flexibility with the strength and sculpting of Pilates. Xtend Barre Stick incorporates resistance to increase intensity and focus on strength and core stability. Mat Pilates and Vinyasa Yoga offer slower paced options, and Piloxing is a cardio option that combines Pilates and boxing. The specialty classes include Xtend Barre Babies on Board for new moms with babies in carriers weighing seventeen pounds or less and Xtend Barre Boys at the Barre to encourage clients to bring males to workouts. Unlike a gym, Xtend Barre is a boutique fitness studio. Clients receive individual attention, the space is inviting and fitness apparel is sold. Xtend Barre offers a free trial class to all local clients. Further, the barre programs are distinct from others because they are diverse and contain modifications. They balance cardio dance moves with isometric moves to increase heart rate, burn calories and build long, lean muscle and there is an emphasis on Pilates principles. Additionally, class challenges motivate clients, and Kendra hosts local community vendor shopping and educational events. Kendra even donated free classes to over ten community nonprofit organizations this past year. “It’s wonderful to watch our clients grow and achieve more than they thought possible,” expressed Kendra. To enhance this growth, four

new classes begin this spring: Xtend Technique, Xtend Suspend using the TRX system, Roll and Release developing flexibility on rollers and Xtend Stride which blends Xtend Barre with running. 

OUR

TOWN Dive Into San Diego's History at Old Town by JESSICA WOODS | photos by Sandé Lollis

O

ld Town, San Diego harks back to the roots of San Diego’s early days as a settlement. There’s loads of history and lots to see packed into a few blocks between the I-8 and I-5 freeway, including the historic parks and infamous Whaley House. For a more mobile experience, the Old Town Trolley Tours offer sightseeing of Old Town and beyond from the comfort of an old-school trolley. The Old Town Historic Park appears to be straight off a Hollywood movie set. You can just picture the cowboys atop their horses and ladies with hoop skirts parading down the main way. Visit a traditional adobe house, La Casa de Estudillo, the First Brick Courthouse, the Seeley Stables where horses and carriages were once stored, and many restored homes of historic San Diego families. A short distance away is Presidio Park, with the Junipero Serra Museum and Bazaar Del Mundo specialty shops. Above Old Town is a plot of land known as Heritage Park. Take a step back in time in these restored Victorian homes where you can get a glimpse of what life was like in these regal estates. But when it comes to a particular house in Old Town, be careful of what you find! The Whaley House – it’s a place that you dare your friends to step into. Are those footsteps you’re hearing? Did you feel a chill? Known as one of the most haunted spots in America, the Whaley House is open for daytime and nighttime tours, and perhaps you’ll get a ghostly visitor or two. If you aren’t brave enough to step inside, you can walk around the outside and tour the gift shop.

DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS 2014 produced by SOHO (Save Our Heritage Organization) This Nov. 1 and 2, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) 2014 comes back to Old Town. The annual celebration honors those who have passed and attributes to San Diego's Mexican heritage with color, music and more. This is not to be confused with Halloween and is not meant to be scary or morbid. Rather, families and friends come together to offer the spirits hospitality. Over fifty public altars will be

58 • 92127Magazine.com • September | October 2014

peppered throughout Old Town, hosted by local businesses, museums and shops, with many of them depicting historical and recently passed figures important to them. Visitors are encouraged to tour the altars to learn more about these figures and pay respects. A Tour of Altars Map will be available at www.sddayofthedead.org. Other family activities will include live entertainment, skull face painting, paper flowers, masks and more. ¢

:::: PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO PROFILE

THE DOLLHOUSE STUDIO

THE LARGEST “THEMED” PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO IN SAN DIEGO

W

by LINDA FRABL | photos provided by The Dollhouse Studio

ho knew that all of those hours spent playing with Barbies could ultimately result in a lucrative future? That childhood pastime prompted Heather Young Leary, Owner/Manager of Forever Young Parties and Events (FYPE, Inc.), to recently open up the photography studio component of her business, called the Dollhouse Studio. Heather explained, “When I was a little girl, I created an entire Barbie world in my basement. I was so focused on the details that would make up these scenes that sometimes it became too late in the day to even play with the dolls themselves. But I didn’t mind. The important thing was to create the perfect setting for the perfect imaginary interaction.” That perfect setting is now The Dollhouse Studio, the largest “themed” photography studio in San Diego. Composed of sixteen minithemed rooms and thousands of corresponding props, the rooms were originally intended to just showcase the different FYPE Inc. partytheme ideas. But Heather admitted, “I realized what beautiful photographs could be taken in the different rooms! So we created the Dollhouse Studio, because we believe you are never too old to play pretend!” The room vignette themes include Candyland, Alice in Wonderland, Beach

Party (“With sand!” Heather interjected), French-Vintage Circus, County Fair, Chalkboard School, Carousel, Paper Moon (“We can put anyone on the moon!”), Versailles, Front Porch, Retro Kitchen, Fashionable Clothes Closet, the Party Wall, Frozen (based on the Disney movie), NYC Penthouse and the Green Room (green screen walls). If Heather seems adept at creating lush Hollywood-type sets, it should come as no surprise that she once worked on soundstages at Paramount Studios. That insatiable thirst to collect fun props fully manifested itself after the birth of her daughter, Estella, eight years ago. Heather exclaimed, “Estella was so full of life, that I began wanting to document every part of it. Hence began a yearly birthday party celebration in her honor, each with an incredible amount of attention to detail.” That “attention to detail” included amassing enough party props to fill up the family garage, as well as two offsite storagesheds. After her husband encouraged her to move the items elsewhere, Heather spent weeks searching for what is now her 4,200 square foot company site. Heather exclaimed, “It is a perfect venue where I can display all of my fabulous props and party concepts to potential clients. I invite you to come and play with us!” ¢

elcome to the 2014 fall sports season. We are kicking off the first season of the 2014-2015 school year with great momentum and excitement after finishing a very successful 2013-2014 campaign. We are so proud of our students’ hard work and accomplishments on and off the field, court, mat, and pool deck. Our campus is filled with excitement with the start of our new endeavor into the Avocado East League. We have logged twenty league titles in the past two seasons. We are preparing for strong competition in the North

County Conference while maintaining our high standards academically. This season we expect a lot of high powered games coming to Del Norte. We will be hosting top ranked competitors which should be a great challenge for our studentathletes. Our athletic department believes we have highly motivated student-athletes, coaches, and staff who promote the success of programs through our motto “Earned Never Given.” We are continuing our quest for building a culture of success, establishing traditions for future

Boys Cross Country

Nighthawks and graduating student-athletes well prepared for post high school endeavors. We welcome and encourage the community to fill the stadium, tennis courts, pool deck, gym, and fields. We encourage our community to bring the family out for all the competitions in the spring. On behalf of DNHS athletics we encourage you to join the “Flock” in making the 2014 fall season one for the record books. ~ Mike Giaime, Athletic Director

E

xcitement is brewing at Maranatha Christian as a new era of athletics begins. The Eagles are shifting their focus toward creating an athletic program that will heavily emphasize player development with the long-term goal of training athletes to play beyond high school. Most importantly, our athletes will compete in a strong Christian environment and learn to play in a way that honors God. This fall season, Maranatha will compete in football, volleyball, and cross country. Fifth year coach Michael Cole has high hopes for his 2014 Eagle football team. Last year the Eagles struggled to a 3-7 record, but with a year of off-season training and a new offense, Cole is happy with their progress. “The players have

worked hard. Last year we were very young with mostly sophomores and freshmen and now we are a hungry team with something to prove.” Maranatha returns four All-League players led by 1st Team selection Isaac Schwan, and 2nd Teamers Corey Adkins, John Bothe ,and Quarterback Christian Cortes. Running Back Jake Bronson will get the majority of the carries. Defensively, their strength is the secondary which is led by Safety Matt DeWildt. Junior Daniel Trent will be key at middle linebacker. Recently hired Head Coach Mary Beiler hopes to take the girls volleyball program to the next level. Beiler played all four years at Swarthmore College and is the director of Summit

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH

Real Estate Matters

Why the First Time Home Buyer Matters by SCOTT VOAK

O

ver the past decade, San Diego has experienced boom and bust real estate markets (along with the rest of the country). Now, however, we seem to be settling into more of a typical market. There will still be swings up and down, but I think the rapid speculation that caused the major increases eight to ten years ago, as well as opportunistic investors snapping up foreclosures and short sales, are both in our past. The future real estate market is going to be more traditional. What does that mean for you? For starters, it means longer market times and more complex transactions. With lending standards tighter (to prevent the speculation that caused the boom-bust cycle), buyers need to have more money to put down (I discussed this and the necessity to show your home in pristine condition in a previous issue); and because debt-to-income ratio requirements are tighter, very few buyers can purchase without selling their current residence. This is the real factor in creating complex transactions and why the first time home buyer is important. Without the ability to purchase a home (say it’s an $800,000 home), without selling his existing home, a buyer must write an offer contingent on the sale of his home. Therefore, the offer on the $800k home only results in a transaction if the buyer gets an acceptable offer on his home (say for $600,000) first. So the buyer of the $800k home needs to sell his home for $600k (as an example). Similarly, the buyer of the $600k home likely has to sell one for $400k. That’s where the first time home

buyer comes into play. The first time buyer is not just purchasing a home for $400k, he or she is enabling a string of sales. Before the last boom-bust cycle, the general consensus was that each first time buyer purchase resulted in a total of 3.3 transactions. I think we are returning to that ratio now. So, if the housing market stalls, expect to hear about the need to relax standards for first time home buyers. When that happens, you can expect market activity and prices to start increasing shortly thereafter. ¢

GolfTEC San Diego Helping Golfers Reach Their Goals by Offering an Organized and Innovative Plan by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photos by Tyler McElhaney

F

or all you golf enthusiasts out there, GolfTEC San Diego may be just the place for you to improve your game. “GolfTEC has a proven track record with a 95% success rate, and nationwide we give 25% of all private lessons taught. No one else can say that!” exclaimed owner of the San Diego franchise, Suzanne LaTour. From custom club fittings, to virtual playing lessons, to a patented technology that compares your swing to those of professional players, GolfTEC offers not only a lesson in golf, but an experience, as well. “GolfTEC itself was started in Denver, in 1995, by co-founders and PGA Professionals Joe Assell and Mike Clinton,” stated LaTour. “Creating a consistent, well-documented golf instruction approach was at the heart of their new-to-the-world business concept. They set out to revolutionize the golf improvement industry and many would agree they’ve done just that.” While Suzanne – who is in her twenty-first year in the financial services industry – was researching various franchises to diversify for future retirement plans, she signed up to take lessons at GolfTEC. “Three lessons into my plan, I overheard that the store was for sale and called Denver to get more information,” she said. “I thought ‘Perfect. I love golf – I should buy this,’ and I ended up buying the entire San Diego Region with a plan to build out four Centers!”

It’s been almost four years, and GolfTEC now has expanded to two San Diego locations – one in Golden Triangle in La Jolla, and the other in Rancho Bernardo. “GolfTECs are fun, welcoming environments,” stated LaTour. “All of our team love what they do – they love to teach and they are passionate about the game of golf!” GolfTEC’s basic philosophy: “to make people better golfers and do it with an organized

At-A-Glance

and proven game plan,” explained LaTour. The GolfTEC plan is comprised of five main elements: a diagnosis of the player, lessons, video-based practice, an online accessible “player performance center,” and precisionmatched golf clubs. As stated in the company’s website, “Whether you are a complete beginner or an accomplished golfer, GolfTEC’s comprehensive approach to improvement can help you reach your personal goals.” ¢

Safety First

RBCC HOLDS FIRST SAFETY FAIR IN OCTOBER

T

he Rancho Bernardo Community Council (RBCC) is on a mission this year to educate Rancho Bernardo residents about their safety and of those around them. While they have traditionally held an annual CPR/AED training in the past, this fall they are taking things a step further. On Oct. 18 the RBCC will transform their CPR/AED training into the first free Safety Fair at the Rancho Bernardo Community Park and Ed Brown Senior Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. “I came up with the idea of expanding this to a full safety fair as a means for the RBCC to help educate our residents on a variety of safety issues in a fun, free atmosphere,” shared Robin Kaufman, President of the RBCC. “Since CPR training is also a safety issue it was more practical to expand upon our annual CPR training event, as opposed to having a separate safety fair some other time in the year.” In addition to the CPR training there will be more than twenty booths devoted to everything from computer safety, senior safety issues, water and fire safety, police and emergency preparation, and much more. Attendees will receive a goody bag which will contain a “passport” where they can collect stamps from each booth throughout the fair and receive a prize at the end when they fill their passport. Hands-on activities will feature a demonstration from a police K-9 unit, games, and the opportunity to explore a police car, fire engine, and Kid’s Safety Trailer, or donate blood at the San Diego Blood Bank Mobile. ¢

Digital Impression System At Signature Orthodontics, we continually seek out new ways to improve our patients’ experiences by investing in the latest technologies. We offer the iTero digital scanner which replaces the need for the traditional impression process with computerized 3D digital scanning. Our patients enjoy the iTero system because there is no need to take traditional impressions which may cause discomfort for some patients. Instead with the digital scanning system, this precise 3D image ensures the highest quality replication of the mouth for better treatment planning and best appliance fit. Because impressions are digital and can be submitted directly to Invisalign, it shortens the time patients must wait to begin the process of creating that beautiful smile. JOHN R. JEROME, DDS MS

How Does it Work?

Diplomate, American Board of Orthodontics

The iTero scanner digitally captures the structure of the teeth and gums by using the latest optical technology. The scanner is a compact, hand-held wand. Once your orthodontist begins the scanning process, it can be stopped and started as many times as necessary. Your mouth is scanned with a radiation-free laser, and in as little as two to three minutes the laser renders a digitally perfect, 3D impression of your teeth and soft tissue structures. Through digital software you’ll be able to follow the progress of the scans, including a 3D model of your teeth on our computer screen. The iTero scanner can be used for any orthodontic treatment, including Invisalign.

:::: NIGHTHAWK INSIDER by BEN FRIEDL special to 92127 Magazine

Keep Calm and Flock On

W

ith the new school year still in its initial stages, the nostalgic feelings of summer continue to reside in the minds of every high school student. The seemingly endless days full of sleep, Starbucks, and Netflix lie behind us as students replace these fixtures with textbooks, homework, and endless nights. However, the fall months bring much more than the struggles of high school. Friendships are rekindled and clubs begin to meet once again. The positives of high school far outweigh the negatives, none more so than the most exciting gathering of imbalanced hormones in all of 92127. No, not Homecoming, but the Del Norte Football home games!

As soon as kickoff begins, students finally are given a break from the overwhelming workloads and constant stresses of high school. Students can find refuge through hanging out with friends and swearing to their heart’s desire. Thankfully for students, both friends and inappropriate language are found in plentiful amounts as our student section, “The Flock,” is unlike any other. The sea of school colors has been a constant at all Del Norte Football games both home and away ever since its establishment. The mosh pit of blue and green combines the perfect amount of screaming and face paint to make any student choke on the sheer amount of school

spirit present. The Flock breaks the many boundaries that high school students face on a daily basis. We are all united behind a common cause, to serve as the twelfth man, to be the voice behind every chant, to live and die with every play. Although school is now upon us here at Del Norte, now is the time to keep calm and flock on. ¢

YMCA Design Team LOCAL SCREEN PRINTING COMPANY VIVA MERCH TEACHES STUDENTS APPAREL PRINTING

V

iva Merch, a sister company to ZCode Media which specializes in custom t-shirt and apparel printing, recently hosted the weeklong camp: Come Home with a Whole New Wardrobe, for eighteen students from the Magdalena Ecke YMCA. The students’ visit taught them the ins and outs of screen printing and the process that goes into producing professional t-shirts. The kids learned everything about the process from digitally creating the art to printing the positive films, using light with photosensitive emulsion to produce the screens, different inks and how they affect the quality of the print and the environment, printing the shirts, and properly curing the finished product. Alex Lopez, Press Operator of Viva Merch, was genuinely

impressed with the students’ hard work and interest. “The level of excitement was great. I really enjoyed working with the students and teaching them about screen printing. Everyone was eager to learn. They made my job easy,” he stated. All of the students signed a custom designed t-shirt which was then printed in front of them. Each student took home two original printed shirts that they were able to design themselves. Towards the end of the day, the YMCA took some time to thank ZCode Media and Viva Merch by presenting them with the YMCA Certification of Recognition: Best Field Trip Ever. For more information on Viva Merch be sure to visit www.vivamerch.com. ¢
