Independence in a Modern World

hings were different when I was growing up. Kids didn’t have cell phones. Video games were barely becoming a thing. There was no Netflix or DVR. You had to plan ahead to watch your favorite shows. Independence came in the form of two wheels. I rode my bike everywhere. I knew the streets and the shortcuts in my neighborhood better than my parents did. There were days that I would be gone exploring the open roads until dark. I didn’t need to be constantly entertained, and I certainly wasn’t connected to all my friends wirelessly. Life was slower. It was a simpler time. I’m sure there were things that we did that would raise an eyebrow or two, but we made it through the coming of age. Times have changed. Gone are the days of innocence and independence in our youth. Teens and preteens are constantly glued to their smart phones. Things move fast. Group text messages, Instagram, Snapchat, and who knows what other apps are now consuming the majority of their time. They can even watch TV on their phones! I had a 13-inch black-and-white TV in my bedroom when I was a kid. And it only had 12 channels (three of which would catch a station). Just when I thought that all hope was lost for our kids and their desire (or lack of desire) to achieve independence, my son and a couple of his close buddies surprised me the other day. With permission, they took it upon themselves to jump on their bikes (after pumping up the tires due to lack of use) and explore the neighborhood. Of course, I did what any SoCal father would do in that situation – I tracked most of their impromptu journey with the help of the Share My Location family feature on my phone – but they didn’t know that. Derrick Breaux I was proud of them. They had a blast exploring the local Publisher area. They even decided to hide their bikes behind some bushes and hike the local hills. As a father, this made me cringe. But the kid in me felt this was awesome. The thought of this brought me back to my childhood. I wish I could have been invisibly hovering over them listening to their conversations. What were they talking about? They came back that evening with tons of stories. My wife and I listened with undivided attention. They giggled. We all laughed. We pushed for more stories. They ran into friends along the way. They encountered hills that were too steep to pedal. There were daring stories of climbing rocks, walking on trails that were deadly (at least in their mind – and that’s all that matters). For a moment, perhaps for just part of a day, my son experienced the type of independence that I had growing up. I am now confident that he will find his own hybrid form of independence in this modern world.

n our November/December issue, we were honored to showcase the fantastic local talent in Oak Valley Middle School’s music department. Over 650 young musicians are finding their voices in the school’s variety of programs, led by Orchestra Director Liliana Lazzari, Band and Orchestra Director Mark Nowak, and Choir Director Rebecca Fallentine. We hit the wrong note, though, and misidentified Liliana and Rebecca’s photos in the article. The correct photos are below. Thank you all for letting us share the tremendous work you do!

How to Keep Your Healthy New Year’s Resolutions Six Keys to Stay Committed by LON MANSON, M.D.; Scripps Clinic, Rancho Bernardo Think the odds are against you when it comes to New Year’s resolutions? Try implementing a few smart strategies so you can achieve your goals and have a healthy 2018, whether your resolution is losing weight, reducing stress, increasing your exercise, or getting more sleep. SIX KEYS TO SUCCESS 1. Choose one or two goals While ambition is laudable, making too many resolutions can set you up for failure. Pick a realistic goal and be specific. If your goal is to get in shape, what does that look like for you? Do you want to be able to run three miles, get to the gym three days a week, or decrease your body fat percentage?
When changes are too drastic, they can be overwhelming, while small lifestyle changes are easier to achieve and maintain. For instance, if your goal is to lose weight, try throwing out one processed food every week, such as chips or cookies, and replacing it with a fruit or vegetable. 4. Share your resolutions Sharing your resolutions with people you trust helps keep you accountable and can give you an added push to stick to your plans. Tell your family, friends, or coworkers about your goals so they can support you. 5. Schedule time Make your new goals a priority and schedule them into your calendar. Form good habits that get you closer to your goal by planning ahead. Eventually your workouts, healthy cooking, or meditation will become second nature, and you will feel uncomfortable if you don’t do it.
2. Write it down Write each goal or resolution down and post them in a visible spot – next to the computer, on the fridge, or even on a mirror. Writing your resolution down helps you clarify what you want to achieve and helps motivate you to take action. If your goal is to increase your exercise, write down a reasonable workout plan for the week ahead. If you want to reduce stress, plot out 15 minutes a day when you practice meditation.
6. Expect setbacks Slip-ups inevitably occur, but don’t let mishaps and setbacks cause you to give up for the rest of the year. If you didn’t get to the gym one day, plan to go the next day, or substitute a few minutes of stretching or a quick walk. Developing the resilience to get back on track right away will keep you positive, and any effort toward your goal is a step forward.
3. Take small steps Plan what you would like to accomplish over a manageable period of time, such as three months, and take small steps daily toward that goal.
With these simple strategies and some patience, 2018 can be the year you succeed in achieving your goals. Remember to keep it positive and enjoy your accomplishments. ¢

On and Off the Soccer Field Diana Gracia Excels at Soccer, School, and Helping Others by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photos by Spark Photography

ifteen-year-old Diana Gracia has lived in 4S Ranch for about five years. “Everyone is really friendly. I like the way everyone smiles and says hello to you,” said Diana about her community. “I also like all the parks with lots of activities going on all the time.” Diana is a sophomore at Del Norte High School, and her favorite subjects are math, Spanish, and chemistry. “I love the challenge of solving math problems,” said Diana. “I like Spanish because it’s part of my heritage. My abuela was from Spain, and even though she passed away, I feel that learning Spanish keeps me connected to her and that side of my family.” As for chemistry, Diana found it to be challenging at first. “But after some extra time and effort, I have found that I really like learning about how and why different elements and compounds affect one another,” she explained. One of Diana’s favorite activities is soccer – a sport she has been playing since the age of five and something at which she excels. “My goalkeeper coach, Evann Zika, has been a great inspiration,” noted Diana. “He showed and taught me that persistence and hard work can help you achieve your goals.” Diana, who is hopeful about playing soccer at the collegiate level, was named as a high school freshman to the North County Conference Palomar League First Team. She has won numerous soccer-team tournament awards as well as individual awards. “Because I am a goalkeeper, most people are very surprised I can juggle a soccer ball so well,” added Diana, who has also been awarded for her achievements in ball-juggling contests. “My record is 1,500 unbroken touches!” Apart from staying busy with academics and sports, Diana lends her time to volunteering at Saint Gregory Catholic Church and the San Diego Food Bank. “I have provided free soccer training and instruction to young girls, both field players and goalkeepers,” she added. Most recently, Diana has started volunteering at Design39Campus as a math tutor. “Another student and I started the program, which helps elementary school students learn and enjoy math,” explained Diana. “I love working with the little ones and seeing how excited they become when they figure out that math isn’t so hard. Like soccer, you just need to practice to get better.”

o say that the Dugdale family is accomplished would be a bit of an understatement. Jeff has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, an MBA, and a juris doctor degree. He is currently vicepresident and division counsel for Qualcomm. Heather also earned a juris doctor degree and is a nonprofit fundraising consultant. In addition, she is a “mommy blogger” who turned her blog into a book entitled Adventures of a Runamuk Mom: The Early Years. Jeff, Heather, and their three daughters are also committed to giving back to the community. “I am a founder of the Jack-o-Smash run and family festival, and the girls and I are also very active as members of the San Dieguito chapter of National Charity League,” stated Heather. When they are not volunteering, the Dugdale girls can be found participating in their favorite sports. “Kenna is a JV cheerleader and

Reese is a cheerleader with Torrey Pines Pop Warner and attends Solana Santa Fe Elementary School,” related Heather. The Dugdale family has lived in the 4S Ranch/Del Sur area for 15 years and moved to their current home six years ago. “When you turn onto our street, it’s like you’ve entered a little rural oasis right in the middle of busy San Diego. We’re able to provide our kids with experiences they wouldn’t typically get in a metro area – raising chickens, growing our own organic food in a large garden, and even racing around on our own ATV/go-kart track,” stated Heather. The family’s dog, Fletch, also enjoys
having space to roam. According to Heather, they’ve been introduced to most of their neighbors by Fletch, who is a renowned escape artist and will often surprise their neighbors with an unannounced visit! Spending time together is a top priority for the Dugdale family, and they love embarking on new adventures with one another. They enjoy snow skiing, water skiing, cruising around San Diego Bay in their power boat, traveling to Colorado, and family game nights. One of their proudest (and most fun) accomplishments as a family was the building of a record-breaking plinko board for the 2016 Jack-o-Smash. “Jeff and the girls assembled a giant 16-foot by 16foot pumpkin plinko board. It won a Guinness World Record,” revealed Heather with pride.

Abraxas Garden Project ROTARY CLUB DONATES FRUIT TREES TO POWAY SCHOOL photos by James R. Kaspar
L
ast month, over 30 members of the Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club attended the dedication of the new Abraxas Orchard in the school’s Community Garden. Rancho Bernardo Rotary recently donated 14 fruit trees to the garden. Abraxas Principal Alain Henry welcomed Rotary Club members, students, and staff to the event, explaining Abraxas’ commitment to providing personalized educational experiences for all of its students. “The donation of these trees and the expansion of the Community Garden is a perfect example of the non-traditional, cross-discipline experience that we value here at Abraxas,” Henry explained. “The orchard will expand the amount and types of produce our students grow and donate to the community.” Rotary President Michael Fuqua thanked Abraxas students and staff for their planning and labor – especially their digging the holes for the trees. Fuqua noted, “This project exemplifies Rotary International’s Making a Difference initiative where every Rotarian, worldwide – all 1.2 million of us – will plant a tree in our communities this year. We are excited to kick off this initiative with Abraxas High’s Garden Project.” Ten student speakers explained the history of the Community Garden to the audience. Abraxas teachers Bob Lutticken and Robert Saxton have led the work in the Community Garden since its inception in 2015. Lutticken brought a special family connection to the dedication ceremony, as his mother Judy is an active member of the Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo. Rotarian Joe Max, who recently celebrated his 100th birthday, led the ribbon-cutting ceremony. After the trees were planted, Abraxas Leadership students and their teacher, Carole De Bruin, conducted tours of the garden. ¢

any children do not enjoy getting haircuts. The Pigtails & Crewcuts franchise was founded in 2002 as an antidote to that issue. This unique boutique makes getting a haircut fun and entertaining to children, and in 2005, when Kendra Keating was struggling to find a salon with the expertise to cut her daughter’s incredibly straight hair, she found it at a Pigtails & Crewcuts. With a graduate degree in accounting, Kendra decided owning a franchise would be challenging, but would also allow her the flexibility of scheduling to plan her life around her daughter. It’s been a natural fit for this single mom – she now owns four Pigtails & Crewcuts salons in San Diego County, with the newest one opening in Del Sur this past May. “At Pigtails & Crewcuts, kids are our world,” Kendra said. “We accommodate children of all ages in a one-of-a-kind environment that is as fun as a playroom but as stylish and comfortable as a living room.” The salon provides services including haircuts, updos, and ear piercing. The salon has multiple lines of child-specific products to cater to all needs and price points, including organic, paraben-free, glutenfree, and sulfate-free products. They use Studex ear-piercing products, with earrings in gold, gold-plated, and stainless steel options. Studex Sensitive fashion earrings are guaranteed allergen free. The stylists are trained not only to work with all types of kids, but to follow all the specific rules and laws set by the State Board “I am so happy this of Cosmetology on cleanliness and safety. COMMUNITY STUFF
RB Honorary Mayor Local residents Alex Lawn and Tracey van Putten both volunteered to run for this year’s Rancho Bernardo Business Association (RBBA) RB Honorary Mayor title. After a hard-fought battle, Alex came out on top as RB Honorary Mayor and Tracey in second as Deputy RB Honorary Mayor. The honorary mayor represents the RBBA and the community at all local events. As deputy mayor, Tracey will be available to join Alex or fill in for him at functions he may be unable to attend. During the campaign, Alex and Tracey raised over $50,000 combined – a record-breaking total – that will be distributed to a number of local organizations, including Rancho Bernardo High School, Miss RB Scholarship, Rancho Bernardo Historical Society, Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation, Ed Brown Center, and the RBBA. At age 25, Alex is the youngest Honorary Mayor yet. He is the son of Scott Lawn, who was the RB Honorary Mayor in 2013-14. They are the first father and son RB Honorary Mayors. Girl Scouts Ballet Day Southern California Ballet recently hosted a fun, unique event for local Girl Scouts. Titled Dance The Nutcracker in a Day, the event offered just that: a single afternoon introduction to The Nutcracker, choreography instruction, and a final performance. Daisy and Brownie Girl Scouts from eight local troops attended the event, earning a ballet patch along the way. The afternoon started with a reading of The Nutcracker story, followed by a presentation about ballet and the creation of The Nutcracker ballet. Girls got a tour of the Southern California Ballet Studios, including costumes, props, and scenery. After a snack and craft break, they warmed up, learned the dances, and got ready to perform for their parents and guests. The event was made possible by a grant from the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation. Learn more at www.southerncaliforniaballet.org.

Encouraging girls to recognize their inner strength and uniqueness is at the core of Girls on the Run (GOTR), an international nonprofit organization that uses exercise as a means of reaching these goals. Girls in third through fifth grade meet twice a week in small teams, learning life skills through interactive lessons and running games. Participants learn critical social, psychological, and physical skills throughout the 10-week program. At the end of each season, the girls and their running buddies complete a 5K running event which gives them a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. GOTR San Diego recently held its end-of-season 5K in December. Heart & Sole is the organization’s program for fifth through eighth graders, where girls learn more about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy, strengthen connections, and further develop life skills. GOTR San Diego was established in 2006. It has served nearly 7,000 girls in San Diego over the past 11 years, including a program at Stone Ranch Elementary. For more information go to www.gotrsd.org.
Hot Cocoa and Snow in RB The 4th Annual Hot Cocoa with Santa and Snow in the Park, a joint event by the Rancho Bernardo Community Council (RBCC) and Rancho Bernardo Recreation Council (RBRC), was a holiday success once again. Hundreds of local kids and their families joined in the festivities. The RBCC provided free hot cocoa, photos with Santa, cookies, and festive coloring. The RBRC provided snow for sledding, carnival games, a bounce house, and a giant obstacle course. Face painter Danny Newbanks helped everyone get into the decorative side of the holiday spirit. “I believe the line for him was longer than the line for Santa!” shared RBCC and RBRC President Robin Kaufman. Guests also donated toys for the Polinsky Children’s Center, with age-appropriate gifts for children of all ages, from infants to high schoolers.

Contribute to WISDOM for Breast Cancer Screening Five University of California medical centers, including Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, have joined together to recruit 100,000 women in California to be part of the Women Informed to Screen Depending on Measures of Risk (WISDOM) clinical trial. “Screening guidelines for breast cancer have changed many times over recent years and seem to be in a constant state of flux,” said Andrea Z. LaCroix, Ph.D., professor and chief of epidemiology in the department of Family Medicine and Public Health at University of California San Diego School of Medicine and co-principal investigator in the study. “The WISDOM trial’s goal is to test annual screening versus a personalized schedule based on a woman’s clinical and genetic risk factors for breast cancer. The study should determine which strategy produces the most benefit for women and the least harms.” To participate, women must be between 40 and 74 years old and not have had breast cancer. Women do not need to be a patient at UC Health medical centers. For more information or to become a study participant visit www.wisdomstudy.org
Students Feed San Diego
Students and staff from Country Montessori School spent an evening volunteering at Feeding San Diego. The students organized donated oranges, while the adults organized Starbucks leftovers and other produce destined to be delivered to schools the next day. The students put together 197 orange bags in under two hours. “When I went to help Feeding San Diego, it made me feel thankful for everything I have,” shared second-level student Adri Rayburn. “I liked volunteering because I was saving people and kids from hunger. It made me feel excited that people can eat because of what I did.” There are approximately 400,000 food-insecure people in San Diego. Every dollar donated to Feeding San Diego provides four meals to someone in need, and the organization provides more than 21 million meals to children, families, and seniors each year. Learn more at www.feedingsandiego.org.
Operation Dress Code Poway Unified School District (PUSD) staff recently participated in Operation Dress Code. This event was originally based in Sacramento, but has been held in San Diego for the past three years. Operation Dress Code helps women make the transition from military to civilian life, with the specific goal of helping them get ready for the civilian workforce. The event includes free shopping through donated clothing and accessories, along with resume reviews, interview tips, professional hair and makeup, and headshots. PUSD staff collected clothing donations at the Career Technical Adult and Alternative Education (CTAAE) programs office. “I help people understand the current job market, explore careers, and build highquality career portfolios. The clothing donation just felt like an extension of what we already do to help our community,” said Career Education Specialist Denise McAndrews. Operation Dress Code was brought to San Diego in partnership with Courage to Call, a local organization that provides a free, confidential, veteran-staffed helpline. with many aspirations and goals – that was in 2009 – for the organizational side. For the soccer aspect of the program, I did an in-depth research of the best NCAA Division 1 programs and the successes they achieved and how they did it, benchmarking in seeking to see if I could adopt as well as adapt. In my research, it was not hard to identify that the best Division 1 program was developed and led by Anson Dorrance from the University of North Carolina. We have refined many things over the course of the eight years, but these two aspects are truly the roots of our program. WHAT IS YOUR ROLE WITH THE TEAM, AND WHAT DOES THAT ROLE INVOLVE?
ss WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THE PROGRAM, AND HOW HAS IT EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS? When I was applying for this position, I desired to make it more than just soccer. I desired to make it about growth as a student athlete, to prepare those student athletes that desired to compete at the next level, and to build young independent women leaders. So, with a background in strategic planning, the Baldrige Criteria for Organizational Performance Excellence, and 20-plus years as a Navy leader, I developed a skeleton strategic plan
I have had many roles with the program and the varsity team. As the leader of the program when it was first launched, it was establishing a vision of the future. As we progressed, then not only keeping our eyes on our plan for the future but implementing for success, plus including the student athletes involved in the process as well as getting the parents and coaching staff all going in the same direction. Overall and at the end of the day – leader, coach, mentor, teacher, and someone all the student athletes can come to for guidance and assistance. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH THE SPORT? My experience with the sport started with my son when he was six. We signed our son up to play recreational soccer in Rancho Peñasquitos. After a few of the games (Bubble Bee), I enjoyed watching him play, saw the other parents jumping up and down and screaming, and just thought I could do that too. I started coaching both my son and daughter in recreational soccer. I then volunteered to coach my first competitive girls under-8 team in PQ. While in PQ, I coached teams from U8 through U16. I then coached the freshman team at Westview High School for four years when the opportunity for the varsity head coaching position came about.
Soccer Program. The tryout process is a competitive process that we have adapted from the University of North Carolina. There are three distinct parts of the process that take place over an entire week from Saturday to Saturday. The final evaluations are based on their performance while being placed on full teams of 11 players in a match environment. WHEN DOES THE SEASON BEGIN AND END? There are really three parts to our season. The pre-season, which includes tryouts, usually starts the third week in November through the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays with conference-established cross league matches, our annual Torrey Pines match, as well as two tournaments, one being the Butch Lee Memorial Classic. The second is the league schedule starting usually the third week in January and going into the middle of February. Finally, post-season play with the CIF San Diego Section Tournament followed by the Southern California CIF Championships through to the second week of March – the high school soccer season is fast and furious! WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO AS THE 2017-2018 SEASON CONTINUES? I expect an exciting year – we have returners coming back that had injuries last year that were

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT OF COACHING? THE MOST CHALLENGING? The most rewarding is to see and experience the growth of the young ladies as they go from freshman to senior, then go off into the world and come back and share their successes. The most challenging is from a soccer standpoint since we have so much fantastic talent. The most challenging for us as a coaching staff is to complete the puzzle and place the right student athlete in the right place for the team to succeed as well as the player to succeed, and we have only a very short time to do that.

TELL US ABOUT THE SUPPORT YOU RECEIVE FROM PARENTS, VOLUNTEERS, AND THE COMMUNITY. The support from the parents, volunteers, and our high school community is always fantastic. It is truly a complete team effort. The parents and volunteers always are there for providing assistance in the snack bar, organizing senior night, the end-ofthe-season banquet, and fundraising, not to mention
attendance at the matches. Our high school community has been just as fantastic, whether it was the first CIF final or the CIF championship match of two years. At the match against Scripps Ranch, I am so focused on the match I rarely notice the stands. There was one play and the crowd erupted – I turned around and there were so many students, parents, and Del Norte supporters. It was amazing. HOW CAN PARENTS OR COMMUNITY MEMBERS GET INVOLVED? There are many ways to get involved: help in the snack bar (contact Mrs. Cindy White); help in a wide variety of activities (contact Coach Gary Rossi); and finally, as we generate our own donations to pay for uniforms, field improvements to the goals, etc., donations and obtaining sponsors would be a huge help. Thank you in advance for doing that! WHAT ARE YOUR SHORT-TERM AND LONGTERM GOALS FOR THE PROGRAM? Short-Term Goal: Gel as a team and get that chemistry to be successful. Long-Term Goal: We always set high goals to win league, win CIF, and then get to the Southern California regionals and win. TELL US ABOUT THE COACHING STAFF AND THE TYPE OF EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS THAT THEY BRING TO THE TABLE. he possesses the same principles as I do as he is an Army veteran, and most importantly he has a low-key manner, which balances and complements my coaching style. The junior varsity coach, Caroline Muoio, played for Carlsbad High School, then at CSU Bakersfield. She started with the freshman team, melded absolutely superbly, and now coaches the junior varsity. She is an amazing player and coach, and possesses and provides a great viewpoint as a woman collegiate athlete. The new freshman coach, Randi Buccat, a former Del Norte Ladies Soccer Program standout, possesses a high soccer IQ and superlative athleticism as a player. As a coach, she brings high energy, enthusiasm, a new outlook, and the Del Norte winning competitive attitude and edge. The goal coach, Alex Groesbeck, also a former Del Norte Nighthawk Men’s Standout Goalie and a San Diego paramedic, rounds out our staff. Alex over the last two years has been integral in the improvement of our goalies – he also has a keen insight on the game and is always there to provide additional exceptional insight and recommendations. Wee Care Preschool Has Been Perfecting Early Childhood Education for 34 Years by KELLEY GUSICH | photos provided by Wee Care Preschool
A
fter searching for quality early childhood education with reasonable rates and finding very few options, a San Diego mom founded Wee Care Preschool back in 1983. With an overall mission to educate and care for young children in an age-appropriate, high-quality environment, Wee Care has now expanded to a total of three schools, including the newest in 4S Ranch. “Our 4S location was added in July of last year, and we feel it’s truly one of the highest quality preschool facilities in all of San Diego,” said President Darla Suder, a 26-year veteran of the organization. “The building is modern and spacious, and the children have a lot of space to learn and play. The classrooms are large and feature skylights, which allows for a lot of natural light to come into the rooms.” The schools serve children 18 months to 5 years of age (plus infant care in the near future), and parents can try Wee Care for 25% off the already-low rates for the first three months. With flexible schedules including half or full days, and options to attend between two and five days per week, along with extended hours of operation, Wee Care strives to accommodate every parent’s schedule and childcare needs. Wee Care serves breakfast, lunch, and snacks so parents never have to
worry about packing or paying extra for meals. Enrichment classes including sports, dance, and gymnastics. These classes join an alreadyextensive curriculum designed to foster a ‘whole child’ philosophy, in which children learn to interact and get along with others through playtime, while at the same time learning those important academic skills appropriate to their specific age group. Wee Care Preschools have a relaxed and happy atmosphere. “The children play outdoors and learn vital social skills while enjoying making art projects, singing, and reading during circle time with their friends and teachers,” Darla explained. “All of our staff members are background checked, have CPR/First Aid certifications, and have been educated in the field of early childhood education.” High-quality education, flexible days and hours, affordable prices, and parental convenience and peace of mind are the top tenets of a Wee Care experience. Open from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., children arrive in the morning to be greeted by their teachers and provided their morning meal. Then, in the classroom, they explore a wide range of learning experiences, including math, science, literature, sensory experience, dramatic play, music, dance, and different

FROM THE DENTIST
INFANT ORAL HEALTH CARE Infants Should See a Pediatric Dentist Before Their 1st Birthday by DR. CHRIS PHAM, 4S Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics
M
any parents are surprised to hear that their infant should visit the pediatric dentist before their first birthday. Our patients’ first visit begins with a tour where we introduce both the parents and the children to our friendly and inviting office designed specifically for children. They will meet the dentist and will be checked for early childhood caries, also known as baby bottle decay. This condition can be detected as early as the first exam if unhealthy dietary habits such as frequent snacking on sugary foods and prolonged bottle feeding are occurring. After seeing the dentist, an oral hygiene instructor will see the child and demonstrate proper brushing,
lending some advice to make brushing at home easier and more effective. Until the child can tie their own shoes, they do not have the dexterity to brush their own teeth effectively; therefore an adult should assist the child with both brushing and flossing if appropriate. Many other topics can be addressed at a first visit such as pacifier and thumb habits and growth and development, as well as if the patient is obtaining adequate amounts of fluoride or if there are any needs for early or preventive orthodontic care. As parents know all too well, as a child learns to walk and explore their surroundings the chance of oral trauma inevitably increases. Emergency dental care can be provided more comfortably if a relationship with a pediatric dentist has already been established. Our baby teeth play a vital role in chewing, speaking clearly, guiding the eruption of our permanent teeth, and allowing children to smile with confidence. When we see children early
we have a much better chance of preventing many dental problems. Infant oral exams are intended to get the child on the right path for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

LOCAL BUSINESS VOLUNTEERS AT CAF TRIATHLON

taff members from local Asis Physical Therapy volunteered at a recent event in support of the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). The 24th Annual Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge (SDTC), held in La Jolla, brought 200 physically challenged athletes, 550 able-bodied athletes, celebrities, and professional triathletes together for a onemile swim, 44-mile bike ride, and 10-mile run. “The event was centered around athletes who had physical disabilities, many of whom had lost a limb or experienced physical trauma,” explained Melodie Nungesser, Clinic Manager at Asis Physical Therapy. The Asis
team was stationed to cheer on the athletes during the bike and run sections of the race. “We supported the athletes during the toughest parts of the course,” Melodie said. “We were fortunate to have the chance to cheer on, motivate, high five, and push the athletes of all ages! The passion and enthusiasm shined through in the staff of Asis as they mirrored the

enthusiasm reflected by the drive of the athletes.” Volunteering for the SDTC made a tremendous impact on the Asis team. “We are no stranger to disabilities – every day at Asis Physical Therapy, we help those with different levels of abilities pursue their various goals,” Melodie explained. “At the CAF triathlon, we were able to watch dreams in the making.” The Challenged Athletes Foundation’s mission is to provide opportunities for people with physical challenges to pursue active lifestyles and competitive athletics. A Love of Learning Grows Here Peaceful, Spacious Environment at Country Montessori School photos provided by Country Montessori School
C
ountry Montessori School (CMS) is committed to maintaining its leadership in Montessori education. Their mission is to foster independent, confident, academically prepared, and socially responsible citizens who will be lifelong learners and problem-solvers. CMS grows and evolves to meet the needs of children, parents, and community. As part of preparing students to be socially responsible citizens, CMS encompasses various community outreach events. Fifth-level students visit the Sunshine Care Community every month. They take Montessori materials for interactive activities with the residents. CMS has also adopted a beach in Solana Beach for periodic clean ups after which families get together for a potluck. Last year, the students raised over $2,000 for the World Wildlife Fund. The fifth levels researched philanthropic organizations and made presentations to the school community, who then voted on which one to support. Each classroom studied an endangered animal. The fundraiser was called “change for change.” The classroom that collected the most change had the stuffed panda live in their classroom for the next two weeks. CMS also takes part in food drives, and this year, some students will be helping at local food banks. It is important to the board of directors and staff that students have the opportunity to be involved in activities beyond the classroom. an authentic Montessori education in a peaceful, spacious environment. At CMS, children ages 2.5 to 11 transition from concrete activities to advanced abstract thinking. Highly respected in North San Diego for over 25 years and accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, CMS is a full member of the American Montessori Society. “The key Montessori philosophy is fostering the children’s enthusiasm for learning,” said Adela Corrales, Head of School. The school provides additional instruction in music, Spanish, art, physical education, and technology. Montessori learning materials invite discovery and grow with the child, containing multiple levels of challenge. “We are a collaborative community where older students serve as role models for our younger students,” said Adela. “Students are a part of a community, not just a school. We believe in educating the whole child: intellectual, physical, emotional, and social.” Small class sizes and a team-teaching approach help students feel comfortable and engaged. Elementary classes have just 10 students per teacher and early childhood classes have 12 students per teacher. Each classroom is led by two to four AMS-credentialed teachers, so students can draw from the strengths of multiple teachers. For parents looking for the best learning environment for their child, a personal tour of the school is highly recommended. Adela said, “Call us for a tour and we will personally show you around the campus, introduce you to staff, and answer any questions you might have about our curriculum and our students’ success.” ¢

The Sides of Senioritis
A
s most college applications are due by January, many Del Norte seniors have begun to feel the effects of having the finish line in sight. After all, once college apps are done, it seems like most of the hard work of high school is behind them. As a junior in the midst of the year of focus, I was curious to see how DNHS seniors really feel with less than six months left before graduation. Do they feel an overwhelming desire not to work, or do they find a way to stay motivated? According to one senior with senioritis, she can’t help feeling lazy and never does her homework. “You can’t do anything. I lay in bed on my phone and procrastinate on
anything related to school.” However, some students have managed to fend off senioritis. One senior claims to have some senioritis, but her desire to maintain her GPA has forced her to keep most of it away. She expects to start feeling senioritis in a few months, but she would rather avoid it because the constant pull of sweatpants and Netflix just makes life harder. And across the campus, other seniors are finding ways to keep busy. Becoming everything from captains on sports teams to leaders in band to volunteers in the community, seniors are taking a step up in involvement in activities which they have been a part of for the past

four years. They may have senioritis, but they still work at the same activities which have grown important to them during their years at Del Norte. As graduation day comes closer and closer, most seniors do end up feeling the symptoms of senioritis. After all, whether they spend their hours relaxing or working, what all seniors really want is to enjoy the last few months of high school before they set out into the world. ¢

T
he ancient lunisolar calendar – which is governed by both the moon phase and the time of the solar year – has been used by many cultures for centuries. Holidays in the lunisolar calendar are marked by astronomical phenomena and often vary in the exact date each year. Chinese New Year, for example, occurs in congruence with the start of the new moon, which falls between late January and late February. Many other East Asian countries that follow a lunisolar calendar celebrate the New Year on the same day. These celebrations are rooted in cultural tradition, each with its own character and customs that are still widely observed today. In fact, communities across the world – San Diego included! – celebrate the lunisolar New Year with major festivals, parades, music, fireworks, food, and traditional decorations. Check out one of these local events for a wonderfully festive New Year’s experience!

Predicting 2018
by SCOTT VOAK
U
sually, predicting the coming year’s real estate market is not very challenging, as real estate tends to move slowly and the beginnings of trends are pretty easy to spot if you know what to look for and you have a little experience. This year, I have to admit to being a little less certain of what we will see in 2018. There are things I expect to happen that I know will affect the market, things I expect to happen but I don’t know if they will affect the market, and then things that I have no way of knowing will happen or not. First of all, the Fed has telegraphed multiple rate hikes and a continuation/expansion of Quantitative Tightening. The rising interest rates will continue to stifle the move-up market, making it harder for people to afford a larger home. QT may pull investment dollars out of the stock market and cause a bit of a drop there, which could affect the amount of money people have for a down payment. I think that the combination will lead to a reduction in the number of home sales, but will not affect the price much as the two actions offset each other. I expect that we will see a new tax law (it hasn’t been passed at this writing), but until it becomes law, it’s hard to know what will actually be in it – although since both the federal and state governments continue to increase the benefits they try to provide, they also need to increase revenue – and homeowners seem to be in the target sites right now.
Other things that could have an effect one way or another are: Brexit and potential further fragmenting of the European Union, an escalation with North Korea or in the Middle East, Broadcom’s hostile bid for Qualcomm, and an unraveling of the current administration. Any of these are possible and none would appear to be good for local real estate, but they wouldn’t necessarily be significantly negative. The biggest issue I see coming is the pension situation and how that affects taxation down the road, but I don’t think we will deal with that in California for at least another five years. So, I think what we will see in 2018 is another 6-10% appreciation with 5-10% fewer transactions. Rents will rise also and we are likely to start hearing more about rent control. I will continue working with my investor clients to transfer their real estate investments out of state for better returns. ¢
