ow that our holiday decorations are down and we are charging into 2019, I thought I’d take a moment to look back at the recent holiday season. Somewhere along the way, I got the reputation in my family as being somewhat of a bah humbug during the holidays. My wife and children are quick to point out my lack of interest in holiday decorating and gift wrapping. But the reality is that I absolutely love the holidays – especially Thanksgiving and Christmas. And even though I may act like hunting for that perfect tree does not interest me, it’s just an act (but I think my family may be on to me since I really love everything about it). So, I’ll have to continue complaining a little in order to keep up the façade. The fact is that I love the tradition that the holidays bring. I love the buildup, the preparation, and the anticipation of the upcoming holidays. Life can bring a lot of changes, but one thing that has been important to my wife and me is continuing the family tradition. And having everyone together warms our hearts. Whether it is Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, or any of the other holidays that we celebrate, everyone in the family knows where we are going to be and who will be there. They look forward to it, and they expect it. As crazy as it sounds, we know what food will be served and who will prepare each dish (for each holiday). It works this way. It’s our family tradition. And although Southern California winter holidays may entail swimsuits and sunscreen instead of bulky coats, I wouldn’t change a thing – nor would they. So, if you hear me whining about decorating the Christmas tree or hanging lights around the house, just know that it’s all part of an act (sort of my own unconventional tradition). But let’s be sure to keep this as our little secret. I don’t want my wife and kids to Derrick Breaux know that I’m really a softy when it comes to the holidays. If Publisher they knew the truth, I’d have to do a lot more decorating and wear one of those silly holiday hats (sorry, that’s not gonna happen!). Now that the holidays have come and gone, I’m truly looking forward to what 2019 has to offer. I didn’t make any specific resolutions this year, but I have large ambitions for 2019. My motto for 2019 is “make it happen.”
Happy New Year to all, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

Phenomenal P laywright NAOMI MELVILLE TAKES THE STAGE BY STORM WITH HER AWARD-WINNING MUSICAL
by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo by Alan Smith Photography
N
aomi Melville, a senior at Mt. Carmel High School, has been writing plays ever since she can remember. “When I was a kid, my cousins and I would put on skits for our families. In middle school, I wrote a script that was performed at my high school’s One Acts Festival the next year,” she said. In 2016, Naomi was a finalist in the 2016 California Young Playwrights contest, and three years and seven plays later, her play, Trash! The Musical, won that same contest and was selected for production by the Playwrights Project. Trash! The Musical was chosen from 415 plays submitted by students across the state. There are five winners overall, with three scripts, including Naomi’s, receiving full professional productions and two others receiving staged readings. According to Naomi, Trash! The Musical is a lighthearted musical about inanimate objects in the trash working their way through existential crises and finding themselves. She revealed that the play started out as a joke between her and a friend, but quickly progressed into a full-fledged script. Naomi is thrilled that her play is being professionally produced, and along the way, she is learning how to put together a musical that is stageready. The challenges have included working through a rough spot in the script and writing the sheet music for the production. The hard work is worth it to Naomi, however. “So far, the experience has been amazing! The deadlines have been a bit stressful, but I’m learning so much. Watching auditions and rehearsals has been very rewarding, and it is incredible seeing actors bring the characters to life,” she revealed. In addition to working on Trash! The Musical, Naomi is involved in the theater program at Mt. Carmel and enjoys composing music and writing poetry and short stories. Looking to the future, Naomi plans to major in theater in college and go to graduate school for her Masters of Fine Arts in playwriting. “After that, I guess I will see where the future takes me. Right now, I am just incredibly grateful for all the opportunities and support I have received,” related Naomi. She encourages anyone who would like to see Trash! The Musical, along with a stage reading from another award-winning young playwright, to come to the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre in the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center at The Old Globe on Jan. 12 or 26.
“I AM JUST INCREDIBLY GRATEFUL FOR ALL THE OPPORTUNITIES AND SUPPORT I HAVE RECEIVED.”

Character Counts
LOCAL RESIDENT CROWNED MRS. CALIFORNIA INTERNATIONAL 2019 photos by Kristi and Paul Wolverton, Picture This
N
orth county resident Jocelyn Soriano Lomahan was recently crowned Mrs. California International 2019. As a platform-focused competition, the Mrs. California International Pageant’s overall scoring is based upon contestants’ knowledge and involvement of a chosen charitable cause. At this year’s pageant in Bakersfield, contestants showed their skills in three categories: interview, fitness-wear, and evening gown. Jocelyn was awarded the 2019 crown with her platform Character Counts. Throughout her reign as Mrs. California International, Jocelyn will concentrate on volunteerism and bringing awareness to this platform, which focuses its efforts on encouraging our youth to live with ethics and morality through the six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and good citizenship. “I am honored to be chosen as Mrs. California International 2019,” Jocelyn shared. “My focus will continue to be my platform, Character Counts. My family and I live by the six pillars of character in our daily lives. In my profession as a realtor, as a faith-based woman, as a devoted wife and mother of two teenage girls who play sports, I live and breathe these characteristics.” She’s extremely involved in her community, in the Silayan Filipina National Organization, the Asian Real Estate Association of America, and the American Heart Association, among others. In her free time, Jocelyn enjoys being a basketball team mom, public speaking, exploring health and fitness, and coffee dates. Jocelyn and her husband Jay have two children, Sofia (15) and Ava (12). For more information about the Mrs. California International Pageant visit www.mrscaliforniaintl.com. To learn more about Character Counts visit www.charactercounts.org.

MOSTRA COFFEE BRINGS AN AWARD-WINNING COFFEE EXPERIENCE TO RANCHO BERNARDO
L
ike its namesake – Mostra is the Italian word for ‘show’ or ‘performance’ – Mostra Coffee has a vision to present innovative and unique brewing experiences/flavors to its customers. The shop opened in 2013, and of the four owners, three are Rancho Bernardo High School graduates! Mostra Coffee is one of the few specialty coffee shops/roasters in this area, sourcing and serving only the highest grade specialty coffee from all over the world: Brazil, Indonesia, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Guatemala, and the Philippines are some of the origins Mostra offers both in-store and online. An example of ways to champion quality, sustainability, and innovation came with Mostra’s experiences in the Philippines. While doing charity work with the poor, they learned that the country grew coffee beans, but weren’t a popular origin in the specialty coffee industry. Mostra endeavored to source highquality beans from the farmers there and bring awareness to the beans’ origin, and in turn bring more job opportunities and improve the livelihoods of the citizenry. “With the Philippines being a farming country,” the roasters confirmed, “we felt that it could have a positive effect on a national level.” To stay involved on a local level, Mostra’s program MostraFit partners with area physical fitness companies and invites the community to participate in a workout which includes coffee! They also donate coffee for special events at local schools, and host monthly after-hours events – arts and crafts, cake decorating classes, open mic nights and mixers – to gather the community. They’ve done over 400 collaborations with craft breweries nationwide. Creating an interactive and open-kitchen experience for guests, the coffee house has a beautiful English industrialinspired design, showcasing the first three-head Mavam espresso machine in San Diego, built into a low bar top to give customers an engaging, visually immersive brewing process experience. Mostra’s most popular drinks include the Crème Brulee Latte, Campfire Latte, Choconana Cold Brew, and One Bra-zillion Coconuts Cold Brew. Mostra was recently named a top three finalist for Roaster of the Year 2019 from Roast Magazine, and won Best Original Cold Brew and Best Signature Cold Brew at the Cold Brew City Competition. In its Carmel Mountain Ranch and a second location – a coffee cart located inside the brandnew Palomar College Campus (with more locations forthcoming), Mostra Coffee desires to share its passion for coffee by serving and connecting with the neighborhood they grew up in.

“Mostra hooked me from the moment I walked in. Even before I tasted the coffee, I was drawn in by the warmth of the Mostra team. The next thing I noticed was their impressive collaborations. They have partnered with some of the best companies around the country to concoct many really creative and award-winning beverages. Finally, I was mesmerized by their attention to the craft. Their menu always offers an intriguing blend of flair and flavor. Mostra has put coffee on the map in San Diego.” – Doug

uying a home and finding the right loan can be a complicated, confusing process. Luckily, trustworthy, experienced advisors are just a phone call away. “We treat the borrower as if they are learning through this, and we know this is an important and stressful endeavor,” said Wendi Allen, a sales manager at American Pacific Mortgage. As loan officers, she and her business partner Megan Beyl put their years of expertise to work for their clients. They specialize in all loan programs, from VA and FHA to conventional and jumbo. They also offer bank statement programs, bridge loans, and other unique products. “No borrower’s situation is above or below us, either,” Wendi added. “Just like family, we have our clients’ backs, and we’ll find a solution if there is one. That is a promise.” Wendi has been in the mortgage business since 2009. “I moved quickly to a top producer and was the only female loan officer in the mix of about 20 male loan officers,” she explained. “I was promoted to processing manager where I led the team for about two years and processed about 200 applications a month as a company record.” Her growth led her to join American Pacific Mortgage as an independent loan officer in February 2018. “I began in the mortgage business in 2003 where I met my husband and we started

our own mortgage company,” Megan shared. She also swiftly became a top producer as the only female loan officer in the company. She took time to stay at home with her three kids, but couldn’t resist the drive to return to the industry. “As my children have grown, I decided to join my dear friend Wendi with purchasing and refinancing homes,” she said. “Being such a big part of the community has always been my passion. I love to help people in any way possible.” Their friendship, experience, and passion let them provide comprehensive, cutting-edge service with a personal touch. “We have figured out what works and how to close loans quickly and smoothly,” Wendi said. “There is a lot that goes into closing a loan and it can be quite stressful, but most of our clients leave not feeling much of that because we handle it in an active manner, not a reactive one.” American Pacific Mortgage has won a number of awards: Zippia Best Companies to Work For 2018, Scotsman Guide Top Mortgage Lenders, Mortgage Executives Top 50 Best Places to Work, and more. But for Wendi and Megan, the best reward is making a difference for their clients and their communities. They volunteer with Girls Rising, Gritty Movement leadership events, and APM Cares, and they treasure client success stories. “I have had borrowers tell me that I have saved them or changed their life and that is about the best thing a person can hear,” Wendi said. “This keeps us motivated to provide the same service to everyone we encounter.”

Snow Day in the Park
The Rancho Bernardo Community Council (RBCC) and Rancho Bernardo Recreation Advisory Board (RBRAB) co-hosted the community’s annual Hot Cocoa with Santa and Snow Day in the Park in mid-December. RBCC provided free hot cocoa, photos with Santa Claus, cookies from Seacrest Village at Rancho Bernardo, face painting by Cathy Beauty Wellness, arts and crafts, and more. RBRAB provided a winter wonderland of snow, a bounce house, and food trucks. Residents and friends enjoyed hitting the slopes. The event included a gift drive for Polinsky Children’s Center, which provides temporary emergency shelter for children in need. The center serves more than 300 children every month. This year, the Rancho Bernardo community collected 214 unwrapped gifts to deliver to the center for the holidays.
Theatre of Peace Combats Bullying Theatre of Peace (TOP), a division of the local nonprofit Act Like You Matter, Inc., is working to combat bullying by empowering young people to find their voice and change the way their generation treats each other. TOP is a troupe of 35 actors ages 11 to 19 who travel to schools in Southern California to run anti-bullying assemblies and workshops that help students build resilience and stand up for themselves and others. TOP Director Amy Jones Anichini and eight TOP members recently presented their Baffle Away Bullying! Interactive Stage Play for K-3rd – based on the book Baffle That Bully!, written by Amy and her daughter Chase – at the 15th Annual International Bullying Prevention Conference in San Diego. Since 2015, TOP has worked with over 5,000 students and more than 200 educators in seven school districts. TOP currently offers four age-appropriate programs for grades K-3, 4-6, 7-8, and 9-12, which vary in content, language, and acting intensity depending on the age group. 10th Annual Mitchell Thorp 5K The San Diego community is invited to attend the 10th Annual Mitchell Thorp Foundation (MTF) 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, Feb. 2 at Poinsettia Park in Carlsbad. The event will include a patriotic skydive demonstration, three live bands along the route, DJ warm-ups and dance contest, San Diego Padres Friar and Pad Squad, vendors, Family Fun Festival with games, prizes, bounce houses, food, and activities for the entire family. The annual event is MTF’s largest fundraiser of the year, supporting local families and children diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions. MTF was founded after 16-year-old Mitchell Thorp passed away from an undiagnosed illness. “Through our own personal journey with our dear son, Mitchell, we know firsthand the heartache that parents face when their child is diagnosed with a critical illness,” said MTF Co-founder Beth Thorp. “When communities of willing and giving hearts come together, miracles do happen.” For more information go to www.mitchellthorp.org.

lite Pediatric Dentistry was the first pediatric dental practice in 4S Ranch and has been providing dental care to children in the community for over six years now. Under the care of Dr. Femme Ambrosio and her team, the practice strives to provide extraordinary care for every patient, every day. “The practice has grown considerably since I first started,” said Dr. Ambrosio. “Our team is committed to improving, maintaining, and growing ourselves
for the benefit of the children we see.” According to Dr. Ambrosio, a boardcertified pediatric dentist, having a boutique practice allows her the time necessary to ensure that children and parents have a positive experience and the best possible care. The office encourages open communication and takes the time to explain prevention plans, treatment, and procedure options and finances. Dr. Ambrosio understands that each child is unique and must be treated as such. “These visits can be overwhelming and we hope that

Dr. Ambrosio has worked in various pediatric dental offices throughout the country and learned a great deal from each experience. When she decided to open her own practice, she and her team not only had the knowledge but also the skill set and personality to provide for their patients. “From the moment a parent calls to schedule an

Dr. Ambrosio is a native San Diegan, wife, and mother, all of which she feels serve her well in her practice. Dr. Ambrosio is a mother to Bennett (8), Amelie (7), and Camdyn (5). “It has always been a goal of mine to not only support the oral health of our patients, but to also be a part of the community our children grow up in,” explained Dr. Ambrosio. “We play active roles in the surrounding schools, sponsoring events that help provide greater opportunities for students.” The staff at Elite Pediatric Dentistry looks forward to being a part of the community, your family, and watching your child grow.

arents with children that are struggling in school may want to consider the Therapeutic Learning Center (TLC) as a short-term investment. Since its inception in 2012, TLC has a mission to FIX learning challenges and disabilities so that students can thrive in any classroom environment with confidence and joy in learning. The program was originally called Therapeutic Literacy Center, but has recently changed its name to better represent the breadth and scope of learning skills TLC focuses on. Located in Solana Beach, TLC’s clinicians provide cognitive therapies for children and adults along with a private school option with academic classes for students in 1st through 12th grades. “We provide individual educational services with specialized cognitive therapy meant to FIX or erase of all kinds of learning difficulties and identified disabilities. After a relatively short period of time at TLC, students transition back to their traditional schools as successful and independent learners,” said school principal Maria Bagby. Individual services are designed to FIX their learning problems, so that students can independently move forward on an even playing field without the

THERAPEUTIC LEARNING CENTER need for accommodations and extra support. “These kids are smart, but struggling. They don’t need us to ‘teach to their strengths’ as we’ve all been told. They need us to strengthen their weaknesses so that learning comes easily in any environment,” Maria explained. Maria herself is a reading specialist and works closely with a network of professionals including educational psychologists, audiologists, MFTs, psychologists, and occupational therapists. The team is dedicated to identifying and fixing the CAUSE of problems rather than focusing on symptoms that come along with frustration and difficulties in attention, motivation, and organization. Some of these symptoms come with labels such as ADHD, Dyslexia, Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), Nonspecific Learning Disabilities, Other Health Impairments, and more. Others have no label at all. TLC is ideal for kids who are struggling in a typical school environment. The school focuses on the science of neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to change both its physical structure and its functional organization in response to training and experience. For many students, TLC clinicians combine proven cognitive therapies with the Arrowsmith Program. The unique hybrid method of combining cognitive therapies with the Arrowsmith Program accelerates changes in learning success. “We don’t expect

This is a short-term investment in the life of a child with permanent changes in learning skills.” In addition to their private school option, TLC offers services before, during, and after school for families that choose therapy while remaining in their current school of choice. With their new name in the new year, TLC has redesigned its financial structure with a reduced cost to families. “We have no contracts, lower hourly services, and increased student services,” Maria related. “We are listening to the parents – we are making it easier for them to give their children what they need.”

The CCHS legacy has deep roots, though the name is only 13 years old. Cathedral Girls High School merged with University San Diego High School (UNI) in 1970 on UNI’s Linda Vista Campus. UNI transitioned to the current CCHS Campus in Carmel Valley in 2005 and took on the new name of Cathedral Catholic High School. “No matter what campus you were on, once you become a Don, you’re always a Don,” said CCHS President Mr. Stevan Laaperi. “The Dons’ legacy has never been stronger. Over 50 alumni are among the CCHS team of administrators, faculty, coaches, and staff.” The professional staff is well qualified

f you have a middle or high school-aged child who wants to go beyond the regimented educational system and is seeking greater connection with teachers, with peers, and with the whole learning experience, do not despair. The Grauer School in Encinitas, which happens to be the longest-serving independent school in San Diego’s North County, is a solution. Its stated philosophy reads as such: “More than just a curriculum, real teaching is the deepening relationship between teacher and student.” Established in 1991, Grauer claims to be the worldwide leader in the “small schools movement.” The school’s founder, Dr. Stuart Grauer, noted, “We have traveled far and wide studying the world’s most inspirational schools, educators, and educational movements: Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, Socratic, free and democratic schooling, expeditionary learning and classical education, from oneroom schoolhouses to Peking University. We support all these great movements and traditions which have provided us with heroes, mentors, and wisdom.” Grauer Principal Dana Abplanalp-Diggs added, “The Grauer School uses the foundations of these great
traditions to infuse all that we keep learning and synthesizing. With the freedom to make choices in their education, our students are discovering their passions and becoming courageous, curious leaders.
“AT GRAUER, NO STUDENT GOES UNNOTICED – ALL ARE PROUD OF THEMSELVES, ALL ARE ENCOURAGED AND REWARDED IN FINDING THEIR VOICE AND THEIR PLACE IN THE WORLD. THEY’RE ADVENTURESOME. THEY’RE HAPPY!” ~ Julie D., 11th Grade Parent
And even though our focus is not on rankings and test scores, our students are getting accepted to and are succeeding at their top choice colleges.”
Engaging students in six core values – resourcefulness, intellectual curiosity, perseverance, compassion, selfadvocacy, and accountability – The Grauer School aims to develop well-rounded students who are purposeful, confident global citizens. The learning curriculum involves field trips, guest speakers, community service activities, and studentcreated programs, all of which serve to complement the required subject matters and stimulate young minds. Grauer is also the region’s only UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) affiliate school, with 176 partner schools around the world, all while gaining unbeatable college placement: 96% of top three college picks and averaging $50-60,000 in merit scholarship offers for graduating seniors. Emphasizing the concept of students taking ownership over their learning, Dana exclaimed, “In a world that often seems to put ‘standards’ before personal development, and to put institutional needs above human needs, Grauer keeps the focus on the individual student. Our students achieve and are valued because they are developing personal passions, and teens coming of age are finding their unique voices at Grauer.”

VILLAGE CHURCH PRESCHOOL
A
lifelong journey of learning and inspiration begins at The Village Church Preschool (VCP). Children ages two to five can play, learn, and grow through the school’s focus on developing the whole child. “That includes each stage of development – social, spiritual, cognitive, emotional, and gross motor, which provides for kindergarten readiness,” explained VCP Director Pamela Miller. “Our philosophy is Developmentally Appropriate Practice, which means we provide experiences and activities that are appropriate for each stage of development.” Teachers get to know each child as an individual, developing unique curriculum to engage and inspire each child’s interests. STEAM disciplines – science, technology, engineering, arts, and math – feature prominently in the curriculum. VCP’s rich history speaks to a legacy of support and achievement. The school was founded in 1962 by young moms at the Village Church seeking the perfect place for their children to learn and play – today, some of the earliest students are now sending their own students to VCP. The highly educated teaching staff is part of that legacy as well. “VCP is such an amazing place to teach that teachers stay for many years!” Director Miller shared. “The average length of employment for our teachers is 20-plus years; we have very low turnover.” VCP knows it takes a village to raise a child, and teachers build meaningful relationships with the entire family. Supportive, respectful relationships between children and their peers, teachers, and families are vital for healthy development. “We view parents as participants in their child’s educational life and welcome you into our classroom as an intricate part of our community of learners,” Director Miller said. tudents at Carlsbad’s Pacific Ridge School are engaged in their education. In the school’s classrooms, they sit with their teacher around an oval table, called a Harkness table, giving each student a front-row seat in a small (15:1 studentteacher ratio) setting. Guided by caring and experienced educators, learning is a conversation, with students exploring ideas together and sharing different perspectives. Students become confident, articulate, and primed for lifelong learning. According to Head of School Dr. Bob Ogle, “Our goal is to prepare students to meet the demands of an ever-changing world. We aim to provide the best of traditional and innovative education in a program that brings together classroom instruction and purposeful life experiences.” In addition to academic excellence, Pacific Ridge focuses on ethical responsibility and global engagement, both within and beyond the classroom. A comprehensive service learning program connects students to local and global communities, and each spring, over 90% of students travel internationally and domestically for academic study, cultural exploration, language immersion, and service. This year’s trips include Austin, Big Bear, China, Colombia, Iceland, Italy, the Galapagos Islands, Kenya, the Northern Sierras, South Africa, Vienna and Prague, Vietnam, and Washington, D.C. ocal resident Dee Leone is a successful writer. In addition to penning three popular children’s books, Dee has also written educational books, poems, plays, stories, activity sheets for Highlights magazine, and numerous online articles. She recently did a reading of her second children’s book, Dough Nights and Dragons, at this year’s San Diego Festival of Books, held at Liberty Station in August. “I was thrilled to read that book at the festival, which was inspired by my wondering how doughnuts were created,” Dee commented. She added, “The most rewarding part of being an author is to get stories into the hands of young readers or listeners and to watch them smile, laugh, and get turned on by books. My goal is to write stories that will ignite an appetite for reading and set a child’s imagination on fire.” Armed with a B.S. in Education, Dee has taught elementary classes in Ohio, California, and Texas, and was even a teacher’s aide for a gifted program in Alaska. Mixing her vast experience teaching youngsters with her innate curiosity with the world around her, Dee is never at a loss for book subject ideas. Her first children’s book, Bizz and Buzz Make Honey Buns, came about because Dee is a fan of homophone wordplay. She explained,

They use a little ‘flower’ instead of a little ‘flour’ to follow a recipe, and that’s just the ‘bee’-ginning of their silly endeavor!” Her latest children’s book, Nature’s Lullaby Fills the Night, materialized after Dee’s own travels. She elaborated, “I enjoy taking photos of nature – from close-ups of flowers to wide panoramic vistas – and have had the good fortune to visit incredible places. So when I was looking at images of swans on a glistening lake in Slovenia, or leaping dolphins off the coast of New Zealand, I was inspired to write a lullaby about them.” Forever influenced by beautiful scenery, Dee is especially grateful to call San Diego home. She exclaimed, ”I like the quiet, natural surroundings, the hummingbirds and butterflies that flit about all over our yard, the weather, the charming village area, and the golf courses in the vicinity.” When she isn’t writing, Dee loves scrapbooking, reading, and learning to play golf.

Friends of the Library
CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTIONS
F
riends of the 4S Ranch Library celebrated their 10th anniversary with an essay contest and community meet and greet. The November contest asked youth library members to answer the question, “What about the library makes you thankful?” Out of 40 entries, 17 winners were selected, with prizes donated by Geppetto’s Toys. The meet and greet in mid-December included longtime and new Friends volunteers, library staff, library patrons, and representatives from the 4S Ranch Master Association – which is partnering with San Diego County Library to promote a potential expansion for the 4S Ranch Library. Doughnuts were donated by Donut Touch in 4S Ranch. The celebration included gratitude for two longstanding board members, Nancy Jones and Lynda Moses, who are relocating soon.

After speaking with many other lenders we chose Wendi & Megan to be our lender for our home purchase. Out of all the lenders we considered, they worked the hardest to earn our business. Wendi's communication was always timely & thorough throughout the entire process. She made sure we had a clear understanding of her process from beginning to end and guided us each step of the way. She provided updates and was available to answer any of our questions or concerns pretty much at any hour day or night. She was great to work with and made the overall process smooth. I would highly recommend Wendi & Megan to anyone seeking financing for a home. 5 STARS ALL THE WAY!!! Thank you both for your commitment to excellence.”

FROM THE DENTIST
BABY TEETH: Brush ‘em,
F loss ‘em, or Forget ‘em? by SPENCER MAUSETH, D.D.S., 4S Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics
T
ime to celebrate! Your new little one got their first tooth. Now what do we do? Since they’re just baby teeth we don’t really need to do much, right? Aren’t they going to fall out soon? Many have bought into the mistaken belief that baby teeth aren’t that important since we won’t have them forever. The reality is baby teeth won’t be done falling out until about 12 years old. New permanent teeth start coming in at age six. Dental disease that affects baby teeth can easily cause lasting damage to the new adult teeth.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry states “Tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease – five times more common than asthma, four times more common than early childhood obesity, and 20 times more common than diabetes.” But the little smile that you love so much, properly taken care of, can lead to a lifetime free of dental disease. Cavities are preventable! If your little one doesn’t want to eat the right foods or puts up a little resistance for hygiene, just remember how much better it will be to know your child is cavity-free. Pediatric dentists are perfect team members to help you reach the developing milestones that children go through. Passing these milestones together will assist you in
being the biggest defender of your child’s oral health. It will take effort, but as time passes and the cavities don’t come, your efforts will pay off. So don’t forget ‘em. Do brush ‘em, floss ‘em, and please enjoy that sweet little smile while you’ve got it.
Your child’s healthy, beautiful smile means everything to us! We Offer...

Girls in Computer Science Club
K
nown for preparing students for their careers, Del Norte High School has recently developed several clubs devoted to encouraging female participation in STEM. Among these clubs, Girls in Computer Science is one that really stands out. Although it was created just last year, the Girls in Computer Science club has already developed into a very successful club. Highly esteemed female professionals come in and dedicate their time to speaking to these ambitious girls at club meetings, and students work with complex programs like Scratch (a programming website created by MIT). Programming small robots and
attending workshops at colleges, these aspiring computer scientists have truly made an impact for girls who wish to enter STEM. Ellyce Bilhorn is a senior at Del Norte and is the president of the club. Noticing the lack of female participation in her computer science classes, she decided to take initiative and immediately became part of the leadership team of the club. “It’s important for girls to feel encouraged to be in STEM because it can be intimidating to start a new field you don’t know a lot about, and it can be even more intimidating when you feel like you don’t quite belong or fit in,” she said. “I want girls to know that they
belong just as much as anyone else in the STEM fields and should feel encouraged to follow their interests no matter what.” With dedicated girls like Ellyce taking action, widespread female participation in STEM can become a reality rather than a fleeting dream. Ellyce also gives a shoutout to her computer science teacher Mr. Lantsberger, who has been so encouraging in helping her achieve her goals.
Kimiya Ghassemzadeh is a junior at Del Norte High School. She is participating in an internship program with 92127 Magazine.

IT’S SHOWTIME! Local Stages Shine During San Diego Theatre Week by SAMANTHA EDWARDS
H
ome to renowned institutions like The Old Globe and La Jolla Playhouse, which together have sent more than 50 productions to Broadway, San Diego has earned its reputation as a premiere theater destination. With everything from comedy, theater, dance, and music on any given day of the week, there is something for anyone who wants to sample San Diego’s robust performing arts offerings. Perhaps the best opportunity to take advantage of everything our city has to offer is Feb. 14 through 24 for San Diego Theatre Week, an annual event that highlights the variety and talent of the local performing arts community with special promotions from participating groups as well as events throughout the week. Tickets
will be available at $15, $30, and $45 levels. Participating theater groups from across the county include San Diego Repertory Theatre, Poway Center for the Performing Arts, North Coast Repertory Theatre, Scripps Ranch Theatre, STAR Repertory Theatre, PowPAC, JCompany Youth Theatre, New Village Arts Theatre, OB Playhouse and Theatre Company, Coronado Playhouse, Diversionary Theatre, and National Comedy Theatre, among many others. PRO ETIQUETTE TIPS: Dress to impress. While casual attire is generally acceptable for attending a daytime show, nighttime shows warrant slightly more formal dress. And don't forget a jacket or coat – the theater can be chilly!
Arrive early. Try to arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of the show to find your seat, read the program, and listen to any important announcements.
Turn off your cell phone. Be sure to silence any electronic devices that could be a distraction to the performers on stage or the people around you.

How the New Standard Deduction Is Hurting Entry Real Estate by SCOTT VOAK
I
’m writing this in early December when November sales data has been calculated, but not released to the public. When released, the numbers will show that the average price for an attached home has fallen in the last two months and is now only 1% above last year (the median price for an attached home is actually below last year’s price). Detached pricing is holding up better with the average still 9% above last year, though the median is only 1% higher. All of these numbers point to a stronger market at the higher end than at the entry level. There is a simple explanation for this. The new tax law increased the standard deduction for a married couple to $24,000, with the maximum deduction for state and property taxes set at $10,000. This means that you need $14,000 of additional deductions
before it pays to itemize your taxes. Assuming a $500,000 home will typically rent for around your medical expenses are less than 10% of $2,500, the new tax law has taken much of the tax your gross income, this would come from your incentive away for potential first-time homebuyers. mortgage interest. At today’s interest rates on On the flip side, this is an opportunity for a 30-year fixed mortgage, to incur $14,000 investors, especially in areas where most of the of interest expense on the first year of your homes are under $500,000 (obviously outside mortgage, the loan would be approximately San Diego). With the incentives reduced $313,000 or a purchase price of roughly for home ownership, a larger portion of the $375,000 with 20% down. population will chose On a typical $500,000 purchase, the first to rent for longer, year’s interest would be about $18,000, creating solidifying returns only $4,000 of additional deductions, which at a for investors. 22% tax rate would be a tax benefit of $880, and that is only if payments were made the entire year. Given SCOTT VOAK that the overall payment with MBA – Broker taxes insurance and HOA is Managing Partner CA DRE #01153157 probably close to $2,750 and
