Welcome to the ‘20s
I
t’s easy to get excited for a new year. Resolutions are made. People dream of what the new year holds. But a new decade is an entirely different beast. Welcome to the ‘20s! I can only imagine what this new decade will bring. The ‘20s will be the third decade of my adult life (considering adult life to be post-college). When I look back at everything that has happened over the past couple of decades, I can’t help but get excited for what’s yet to come. Our oldest daughter, Ashley, is scheduled to get her M.B.A. in May. Starting the ‘20s off with a major accomplishment, the coming years will certainly be exciting for her as she enters the first decade of her adult life. Our son, Peyton, and youngest daughter, Audrey, are in the middle of their high school years. They will experience high school graduation and their college years during the ‘20s – and then some. My wife and I will each hit a major age milestone during the ‘20s – yikes! And it appears, as long as things go as planned, that we are likely to become empty nesters later in the decade. How crazy is that? I hope that the ‘20s will deliver the same type of hectic joy that the last decade has brought. Although I would love for things to simply slow down, I can’t Derrick Breaux help but imagine how we will all look back at the ‘20s once Publisher they have come and gone. And since a new year and decade would not be as fun without resolutions, rest assured that I have a few that I’m working on. You’ll have to stay tuned for the updates. Happy new year (decade) from the Breaux family to yours!
Regards, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

Student Star Shriya Selvakumar Is Inspired to Help Her Community Improve by KELLEY GUSICH
W
hen she was only four, Shriya Selvakumar began practicing Bharatanayam – a classical Indian dance form. Completing a 10-year study of this dance, the Bharatanayam Arangetam, she explained, “I truly became passionate about the dance form when I began to admire the grace and significance found in each routine.” Shriya is also a first-degree black belt and received a Girl Scout Silver Award with her troop by creating a plan to enhance the lives of the homeless in San Diego. A 4S Ranch resident since the age of five, she said, “The welcoming environment is what constantly motivates me to give back to my community by volunteering.” Shriya’s fascination with form and
function highlights everything she does. From dance and karate to science and math, her interests help her probe the reasoning and logic behind concepts she learns. This becomes obvious when looking at one of her volunteer jobs: working with Alzheimer’s and dementia patients at the ActivCare Memory Center in 4S Ranch. Spending time and interacting with the residents in activities like eating, taking walks, or working on little projects, Shriya observed the way they process information. She then created activities that would catch the residents’ attention and allow them to interact, like reading books with specific groups of images or laying out maps with pictures of different countries, then asking the resident to connect the image to its description. “Ultimately I found that an important factor in keeping the residents’ minds active was to see how they drew connections among ideas presented to them,” Shriya confirmed. She has since
gathered these ideas and information into an informational packet to be sent to memory caretakers in India who don’t have the facilities or foundation to provide the advanced care available here. In addition to volunteer time at ActivCare, Shriya is the founder and president of ShineUnited, Inc., a nonprofit helping people in need receive basic sanitary and educational tools, complementing the fundraising activities she practices to support the homeless population in San Diego. A writing tutor, debater, and member of multiple STEM clubs at Del Norte High School, she plans to pursue a career in STEM at a prestigious university. With all Shriya does to inspire, she has her own inspirations: “My friends and family inspire me to be the best version of myself,” Shriya said. “Their personal growth motivates me to reach new heights, and the values I learn from them push me to be a kinder person.”

FROM THE DENTIST
BABY TEETH: Brush ‘em,
F loss ‘em, or Forget ‘em? by SPENCER MAUSETH, D.D.S., 4S Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics
T
ime to celebrate! Your new little one got their first tooth. Now what do we do? Since they’re just baby teeth we don’t really need to do much, right? Aren’t they going to fall out soon? Many have bought into the mistaken belief that baby teeth aren’t that important since we won’t have them forever. The reality is baby teeth won’t be done falling out until about 12 years old. New permanent teeth start coming in at age six. Dental disease that affects baby teeth can easily cause lasting damage to the new adult teeth.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry states “Tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease – five times more common than asthma, four times more common than early childhood obesity, and 20 times more common than diabetes.” But the little smile that you love so much, properly taken care of, can lead to a lifetime free of dental disease. Cavities are preventable! If your little one doesn’t want to eat the right foods or puts up a little resistance for hygiene, just remember how much better it will be to know your child is cavity-free. Pediatric dentists are perfect team members to help you reach the developing milestones that children go through. Passing these milestones together will assist you in
being the biggest defender of your child’s oral health. It will take effort, but as time passes and the cavities don’t come, your efforts will pay off. So don’t forget ‘em. Do brush ‘em, floss ‘em, and please enjoy that sweet little smile while you’ve got it.
Your child’s healthy, beautiful smile means everything to us! We Offer...

ALYZE DREILING IS A CONDUCTING FORCE FOR LOCAL YOUTH ORCHESTRA by LINDA FRABL | photo by Forever Photography by Liberty
G
Name: Profession: Community: Favorite Local Spots:
Alyze Dreiling Conductor, Violinist, Violist Rancho Bernardo – Westwood since 1994 Barons Market, Sprouts Farmers Market, Bernardo Winery, all local restaurants
rowing up in an arts-infused household in Michigan with a father who was a pianist/organist and a mother who was a pianist/singer/oil-painter, it was inevitable that Alyze Dreiling would grow up to become enmeshed in the world of musical arts herself. Alyze, who began playing the violin at age 12, admitted, “Ever since I was little it was impossible for me to consider being anything other than a musician, especially a violinist. Music was always everywhere in the house!” Now a resident of the Westwood community, Alyze is a wellknown presence in San Diego’s musical performance and education circuit. Alyze is the founder, artistic director, and conductor of the Soloists Ensemble, Sinfonietta, and Festival Orchestra, all part of the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra. She is also the conductor of North Coast Strings at the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad, and the principal viola in the Grossmont Symphony and String Quintet. Alyze is also the music coach of the violin and viola sections at numerous schools: RBHS, Westview HS, Del Norte HS, Oak Valley MS, Challenger MS, and intermittently at Mira Mesa High School and Mission Bay High School. Plus, Alyze has her own private teaching clientele of about 50 students. Alyze commented, “It is very fulfilling to me, as a conductor, to lead and inspire these young musicians who are on their path in musical development.” Recently, Alyze was awarded the 2019 First Prize for Conductor of Youth Orchestra division from the American Prize, a national competition. She was also selected to participate in two International Conducting Competitions in 2018, one in Sofia, Bulgaria, and one in Nice, France. Alyze revealed, “I would like to conduct more here and abroad. My biggest goal would be to develop and perform with a professional chamber women’s orchestra here in San Diego, featuring a great deal of music by female composers.” A fan of Rancho Bernardo, Alyze served on the city’s Planning Board and Community Council, and volunteered as Entertainment Coordinator for the RB Alive Event for numerous years. Alyze proclaimed, “I want to be involved with serving the community and getting to know the people. I like to give back as much as I can!”

Sharing the Holiday Spirit
THE RB COMMUNITY GIVES BACK AT ANNUAL SNOW DAY
T
he Rancho Bernardo Community Council’s (RBCC) annual Snow Day in the Park and Hot Cocoa With Santa was once again a success. Participants enjoyed a day of wintery fun while giving back to the community. The RBCC provided 20 gallons of hot cocoa and 500 cookies to fuel the merrymaking, which included games, crafts, face painting, and photos with Santa. The Recreation Advisory Board provided a hillside of snow for sledding, snow angels, and snowballs. Guests also brought new, unwrapped gifts for children staying at the Polinsky Children’s Center, which offers emergency shelter to children separated from their families. The center admits more than 300 children 18 years or younger every month. From toys and books to games and sports equipment, community members donated more than $6,500 of holiday gifts for these children in need. Learn more about the RBCC and upcoming events at www.rbcommunitycouncil.com.

ACHIEVING BALANCE Brain Balance Addresses Challenges with a Drug-Free, Integrative Approach by LIZ ONUFER | photos provided by Brain Balance of San Diego
J
on Pak knew there was a more effective way to help children who struggle academically, socially, or behaviorally – namely, through a coordinated, child-centric effort. As the father of a son with Down Syndrome, an uncle to a child with Asperger’s Syndrome, and a friend to parents with struggling children, Jon paired his personal experience with his passion for helping people and his entrepreneurial roots to open the doors of Brain Balance of San Diego. Brain Balance serves struggling children with an integrative and holistic approach. “We’re bringing a much needed nonmedical solution to a widespread problem affecting families of all walks of life,” Jon said. Through a personalized combination of in-center sessions, at-home activities, and a nutrition program, Brain Balance addresses the individual gaps for each child to improve focus, behavior, social skills, sensory processing, and academics. “The team cares deeply about our students and, as each child is different, we discuss strategies for each one of them to create the biggest impact possible,” Jon acknowledged. Backed by a program developed and continuously improved by research that has been proven successful on over 30,000 children, the Brain Balance team creates individualized
plans to strengthen the child’s weaker areas, including sensory engagement, core muscle strength and coordination, eye tracking, auditory processing, academic guidance, and nutritional guidance. “Gaps and holes in development result in gaps and holes in behavior, academics, socialization, and confidence,” Jon explained. “Our program focuses on improving the foundation of development and brain connectivity rather than masking or coping with symptoms.” Those symptoms can range from lack of focus and meltdowns to lack of confidence and social struggles. Jon and his team work mainly with children from Pre-K to 12th grade with or without a diagnosis and also offer a new program for college-age students. “I’d like to encourage parents to challenge the system,” Jon shared. “A label doesn’t necessarily help the child and medication is only a coping strategy that in the long run doesn’t provide any improvement while oftentimes affects the development of the child.” Since opening their doors earlier this year, Jon and his team are experiencing the results. “Whenever our parents share their stories on how things are better at school, at home, making new friends, doing things they would have never imagined in the past, we get so pumped up that it makes us want to work

STUDIO WEST
E
mbarking on a new career can be a daunting task, especially when it involves diving into a high-energy, high-profile one such as audio engineering. But switching up careers later in life is something that seemed like a “no-brainer” to several audio enthusiasts after taking part in the Electronic Production Package (EPP) at Studio West. Like their fellow classmates, these students initially enrolled in the EPP program as a fun way to expand their skills in what seemed like an after-work hobby. However, once involved in the program, what started as a hobby soon began looking more like a viable career option. “Oftentimes we see some of the more casual enthusiasts enter the program with the idea that this is for fun or good for a side business. But once they start working with our instructors, getting hands-on engineering experience in a working recording studio, we see a shift in focus. Folks with a regular 9-to5 job they aren’t 100% invested in realize that their passion can be turned into a viable
career,” explained Todd Hunsaker, Director of Admissions for The Recording Arts Center (TRAC) at Studio West. Todd explained further, “When the class is over, the next logical step to launch a career in the industry is to acquire more experience and get the in-depth training that can lead to a successful career in audio engineering. Many find this in our year-long Diploma program.” One student, Isaiah, finished the EPP program last month and immediately enrolled in the Diploma Program. His classes began on Monday, and he couldn’t be more thrilled about his choice. “It was so much fun working a real recording studio. I’m really excited about my decision to start the full program!” Don’t miss out on a new career opportunity in audio engineering – try out The Recording Art Center’s Electronic Production Package now. Classes are enrolling now, so check out the full schedule at www.studiowest.com or call 858-592-9497.

RB Community Foundation Grants
Students Promote Smart Nutrition
The Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation (RBCF) awarded $96,050 in grants to 20 local nonprofit organizations at the annual RBCF Community Thanksgiving Luncheon. The combined total is a historic high for the organization, made possible in part by a donation in memory of Rancho Bernardo residents June and Maurice Nestrud. The 2019-2020 grantees were: Let’s Light the Cross Foundation, Poway Center for the Performing Arts Foundation Voices for Children, Rancho Bernardo High School, Spirit of the Fourth, Inc., Rancho Bernardo Historical Society, Rancho Bernardo Veterans Memorial, Rancho Bernardo Senior Services, Alzheimer’s San Diego, Friends of Vista Hill, Southern California Ballet, Rancho Bernardo Music Boosters, Classics 4 Kids, Golden Era Memories and Film, YMCA of San Diego County, Poway Symphony Orchestra Foundation, Turtleback Education Foundation, Burn Institute, Friends of the Rancho Bernardo Library, and Rancho Bernardo Neighborhood Watch. Learn more about the foundation at www.sdfoundation.org.
Golf Tournament Supports Veterans photo by Erik Eilers
Local business ICON Utility Services and their sister company, GIS Surveyors, Inc., recently hosted the 1st Annual Warrior Built Golf Tournament. Both companies are service-disabled veteran owned, and the tournament benefited The Warrior Built Foundation, which provides vocational and recreational opportunities to combat veterans and wounded service members. Events and activities from building motorcycles to playing softball help veterans transition to civilian life with support and camaraderie. “It’s about creating relationships between fellow combat veterans,” explained Warrior Built Founder and President Nick Hamm. “The best thing we can do for you is connect you with other combat vets in order to strengthen your support network.” The tournament was held at Riverwalk Golf Club and welcomed 136 golfers. Eight vendors and 47 sponsors took part for a day of golf, craft brews, fine dining, and more, and $38,324 was raised for the foundation. Learn more at www.warriorbuiltgolftournament.com.
4S Ranch Book Nook The Friends of the 4S Ranch Library are relaunching the Book Nook – a permanent section of the library that sells books on the honor system, with nonfiction and fiction offerings for all ages. The Book Nook is the organization’s main source of income. The new design and layout will be officially unveiled on Jan. 15 at 6:30 p.m., just after the annual meeting and installation of the 2020 board of directors. The Friends are a nonprofit group of local community members dedicated to expanding the library’s programs. From annual events like the Dr. Seuss Birthday Party and holiday celebrations to regular events like yoga, Zumba, chess, and story time, Friends funding is crucial to keeping the library vibrant and active. Learn more about the Friends, upcoming events, and how you can take part at www.4sranchfol.org.
A group of students from Pacific Ridge School, including 92127 resident Jackson Fawcett, recently visited 75 fourth graders at Poinsettia Elementary School to present about nutrition and making healthy choices. The service learning group, called Health Nuts, is dedicated to addressing nutrition shortfalls and food waste in the San Diego region. “Our presentation focuses on differentiating between natural and processed foods and maintaining balance,” explained Kimberly Cheung, a senior in the group. “An exposure to these simple concepts creates a consciousness towards food that can positively influence all aspects of a student’s life. The food we eat directly affects our health and happiness, and we are so excited to have the opportunity to share this message with our community!” Other service learning groups at Pacific Ridge School include Alternative Energy Sources, Kids for Peace, and Sea Safe Surf.
6th Annual Donation Drive Assemblymember Brian Maienschein and the ASPCA held their 6th Annual Pet Adoption and Donation Drive at the Poway Kahoots Pet Store in December, supporting homeless animals in San Diego County. Adoptable dogs were available at the kick-off event, and donated items throughout the week-long drive included dog and cat food, collars, blankets, cat litter, flea and tick medicine, and leashes. This year’s donations benefited nonprofit organizations Lionel’s Legacy and Second Chance Dog Rescue. Lionel’s Legacy is a senior dog rescue and humane education program for elementary school children. Second Chance is an organization dedicated to saving homeless dogs from local shelters and from Baja California, Mexico. Learn more at www.lionelslegacy.org and www.secondchancedogrescue.org. Assemblymember Maienschein represents the 77th Assembly District, which includes the communities of Scripps Ranch, Poway, Rancho Peñasquitos, Rancho Bernardo, Carmel Valley, Rancho Santa Fe, Fairbanks Ranch, Mira Mesa, Clairemont, Kearny Mesa, Miramar, San Pasqual Valley, and Tierrasanta.

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS
THE SKOGLIN FAMILY SERVES AND BUILDS COMMUNITY THROUGH SPORTS
THE LIFE SKILLS OF
Lacrosse by LIZ ONUFER
T
im and Kristine Skoglin see lacrosse as an important opportunity for kids to learn life skills. As volunteers for 4S Del Sur Nighthawks Lacrosse, a nonprofit recreational program for boys in kindergarten through eighth grade, they emphasize respect, work ethic, and overcoming adversity for young athletes both on and off the field. Tim is the
program director and head coach for the seventh and eighth grade team, and Kristine serves on the program’s board of directors and as the head marketing manager. Tim first began volunteering with the lacrosse program three years ago. His son, Blake, had an interest in the sport. It was a natural fit for Tim since he had played high school and collegiate lacrosse.
Name: Community: Volunteer Affiliation: Profession: Children: Hobbies & Interests: Name of Group: Group’s Mission: Phone: Email: Website:
“Mentoring young student athletes and having the opportunity to be with my son on the field at this stage is a tremendous gift,” Tim shared. With Kristine’s organizational support, the couple acknowledged, “Together we are all making memories that we will look back on throughout our lives.” Lacrosse is more than just building family relationships. “My biggest accomplishment in volunteering to direct this program has been bringing the community together around lacrosse,” Tim acknowledged. “Every volunteer has a son participating in the program, and most live right in our community.” With a direct connection to Del Norte High School, boys can use the program as prep for playing high school lacrosse. As a bonus, they are able to get comfortable on the high school campus before they are
freshmen. Tim and Kristine have lived in 4S Ranch since 2002 and own and operate a residential real estate brokerage. “The community has it all, and we are convenient to the award-winning public schools for our kids,” they said. Their son Blake is a seventh grader at Oak Valley Middle School, and their daughter Laura is a fourth grader at Stone Ranch Elementary. The family is currently gearing up for the Spring 2020 lacrosse season, which runs from February through May. For boys in kindergarten through eighth grade interested in playing, registration is open until the beginning of February, and all experience levels are welcome. The program offers a strong foundation in the fundamentals of lacrosse while building friendships and skills that transfer across sports. This is echoed in the pillars of the program: Character, Classroom, Skills, Sportsmanship – preparing boys for success in sports, school, and life.

ORTHODONTICS PROFILE
Community Driven DR. LINDSAY PFEFFER TAKES I-ORTHO TO NEW HEIGHTS OF PATIENT FOCUS AND PHILANTHROPY
by KELLEY GUSICH | photos provided by iOrthodontics
D
r. Lindsay Pfeffer, MBE, MS, is the owner of i-Orthodontics in Del Sur. She and the entire clinic take pride in a patient-driven approach, where patients get to choose what they want, how they want it, and i-Ortho caters to their desires. Providing braces, Invisalign, Phase 1 (treatment to prevent extraction, surgery, or more invasive treatments when patients are older), and Phase 2 (non-extraction techniques), they focus on the face and airway, and can change a child’s trajectory just through an upfront approach – laying out all the possibilities. “We want you to feel like family and be informed. Our job is to teach you what you need to know so that you can understand your options and feel confident in your decisions,” said Dr. Pfeffer. The exceptionalism of i-Ortho can be easily attributed to Dr. Pfeffer’s unique story. Her biology degree took her from scientific research for the U.S. Department of Agriculture to oncology fighting numerous types of cancer. When her father, a well-known dentist in her home town, died, Dr. Pfeffer began helping the dental practice. “It was here,” she said, “seeing patients crying over their love for my father, I decided I wanted to be a dentist.” She attended Penn School of Dental Medicine – an Ivy League institution – while also completing a Master’s in Biomedical Ethics at medical school. “We focus on community and that means giving back to our patients, our schools, and those in need,” shared Dr. Pfeffer. “We’re not just a doctor’s office; we are changing lives outside of our clinic walls every day.” Her commitment to her patients’ overall health is reflected in i-Ortho’s involvement with the area. They provide resources to 22 schools as well as multiple organizations, including the San Dieguito, Greater San Diego, and 4S Ranch Boys and Girls Clubs. Her office not only donates their time to over 150 organizations in her community, but also financially, last year donating over $110,000 throughout the county – an unprecedented number for a healthcare office, let alone a small business and sole practitioner. Dr. Pfeffer is also faculty at University of California, San Diego Medical School, where she operates the free clinic providing care for the less fortunate. i-Ortho is a business built on honesty, trust, and love for the patients, the community, and those who need it most. Dr. Pfeffer concluded, “We are creating smiles from the inside out. My job is to give people the smile they deserve and then give that same love, understanding, and attention to those who need it most and otherwise wouldn’t get it. If not us, who will?”

Faith, Knowledge, Character, Responsibility Cathedral Catholic High School Fosters Student Success in Class and in Life by LIZ ONUFER | photos by Forever Photography by Liberty

rowing up in today’s world may look very different than a generation ago, but the foundations remain the same. Teens need to build knowledge, strengthen character, and learn responsibility. At Cathedral Catholic High School (CCHS), these core values are the foundations of the collegepreparatory education fostered in a faith-based community. Cathedral Catholic focuses on an integrative curriculum that develops the whole student – spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically. In partnership with parents, the school forms an educational ministry that is mutually supportive and a community committed to excellence. The CCHS community is committed to creating graduates who carry a spirit of intellectual curiosity and a love for learning on their continuing journey of personal growth. Graduates of Cathedral Catholic have attended Notre Dame, Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Duke, and Stanford, as well as many of the other top universities in the country. The school hosts over 1,600 students, and the diverse student body is supported with over four million dollars in tuition assistance. Cultural and economic diversity in the student body is a cornerstone for Cathedral Catholic. Served by highly dedicated administration, faculty, and staff, students engage in learning and growth both inside and outside the classroom. In addition to the classrooms and labs, the campus has a library, theater, chapel, ceramics studio, music room, gymnasium, sports stadium, aquatics center, and multiple sports fields. The athletic program emphasizes skill development, teamwork, physical fitness, and, most importantly, sportsmanship. At CCHS, the athletics go hand-in-hand with the academics. CCHS is accredited by the Western Catholic Education Association (WCEA) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and holds membership with the College Board. In 2015 and 2017, the school was awarded the status of an Apple Distinguished School, recognized for its innovation, leadership, and educational excellence. While the world today’s students are entering has greatly changed, the foundation that students need to succeed have not. At CCHS, the core values of faith, knowledge, character, and responsibility remain strong and stable. Cathedral Catholic High School students have a strong balance between high academic achievement and being well-rounded contributing members of society.

The Gift of Forgiveness
KATHERINE SCHWARZENEGGER PRATT TO PRESENT AT SAN DIEGO WOMEN’S WEEK photo by Azusa Takano
N
ew York Times best-selling author and animal advocate Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt will join the roster of speakers at North San Diego Business Chamber’s San Diego Women’s Week Leadership Conference on Friday, March 20. Katherine will discuss her newest book, The Gift of Forgiveness: Inspiring Stories from Those Who Have Overcome the Unforgivable, a collection of interviewstyle stories from those who have learned to let go of resentment and find peace, intertwined with Katherine’s own personal insights. “Forgiveness is a topic that everyone will have to deal with at some point in their lives. None of us can get through life without being faced with the opportunity to forgive,” Katherine said. “My hope with this book is that through reading these compelling stories, people are able to apply some of the findings to their own journey. I hope that it will provide a better understanding of the journey and relationship with forgiveness, and bring a sense of healing.”
“None of us can get through life without being faced with the opportunity to forgive.” Katherine is part of a dynamic line-up of influential leaders and executive women panelists participating in this year’s event. “To me, being a leader means making a difference and helping others,” she said. “That is really what I try to do with all of my books. My hope is that someone reads this book and feels less alone in their journey to forgive and that people realize that forgiveness is a gift we give ourselves more than anything.” San Diego Women’s Week will take place March 16-20, with three events throughout the week. Opening Night will be held on Monday, March 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Petco Corporate in Rancho Bernardo, and includes a keynote speaker, panel discussion, book exchange, vendors, appetizers and drinks, and networking. Women and Wine will take place on Wednesday, March 18 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Bernardo Winery, featuring wine and food tasting and unique shopping opportunities. The Leadership Conference will be held on Friday, March 20 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Town and Country Resort and Convention Center, and includes morning coffee and pastries, keynote speakers, panel discussions, swag bags, vendor village, lunch, and more. tudents at Pacific Ridge School are at the center of the learning experience. In the school’s classrooms, they sit with their teacher around an oval table, called a Harkness table, giving each student a front row seat in a small (15:1 student to teacher ratio) setting. Guided by caring and experienced educators, learning is a conversation, with students actively exploring ideas together, sharing different perspectives, and fully engaging in their education. Opened in 2007 with a focus on forward-looking education, Carlsbad’s Pacific Ridge School is a private, independent school serving 619 students, grades 7 through 12. The college preparatory school draws students from all over San Diego’s North County and is led by Dr. Bob Ogle, Head of School. “A Pacific Ridge education inspires students to meet the demands of an ever-changing world,” explained Ogle. “We aim to combine the best of traditional and innovative education in a program that reaches beyond academics, bringing together classroom instruction and purposeful life experience.” As Pacific Ridge students challenge themselves academically, they also become aware of their roles as members of a global community and discover the kinds of people they want to become. The school emphasizes ethical responsibility, both in the classroom and through a comprehensive, weekly service learning program that connects students to local and global communities. At the end of each school year, over 90 percent of students travel internationally and domestically for academic study, cultural exploration, language immersion, and service. This year’s school trips include Armenia, Big Bear, Borneo, China, Cuba, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, Japan, New Zealand, the Northern Sierras, Peru, Russia, Vanuatu, Vietnam, and Washington, D.C. “We want our students to understand the interdependency of cultures and to be inspired to act for the good of the world,” said Ogle. Pacific Ridge also offers students many opportunities to become involved, learn leadership skills, and develop their passions. Extensive arts offerings, competitive and participatory athletics, clubs, and service learning are built into the school day and are essential parts of every student’s education. Facilities on the 12.5-acre campus include middle and upper school classroom buildings, state-of-the-art labs, an arts and technology center, a full-size athletic field, and one of San Diego’s largest high school athletic centers. Interested students and their parents are encouraged to visit www.pacificridge.org to schedule a campus tour and find out more about the Pacific Ridge School experience. SPECIAL ADVERTISEMENT

Using Facebook to Target Buyers Out of Area by SCOTT VOAK
F
acebook can be annoying. It can be entertaining. It can be eye-opening. It can also be a tool to sell your home to buyers outside of San Diego. If you know how. Several high-tech companies have announced they are staffing up in San Diego (Google, Amazon, Apple, etc.) For the most part, they are moving executives and team leaders to San Diego and hiring the team members away from existing companies here. So, how do we reach these executives to get them to buy your home? First of all, we need a video. Photos stitched together don’t work. Real videos get a far better response. Once we have a video we can purchase ads on Facebook and target people who live outside of San Diego but who are looking at San Diego real estate online. Note that this is different than “putting your home
on Facebook,” which is when an agent puts your home on their timeline and all their friends see it. That doesn’t help sell your home – but it makes your agent look busy. To market your home in other areas on Facebook, the agent needs a business account and then needs to be able to create ads targeted at the correct demographics. It works. Companies are moving top people into San Diego and we are able to target them and their spouses using Facebook. It’s just another tool to get you the highest possible price.

AMERICA’S FINEST VALENTINES Enjoy Some Sweet San Diego Events This February by LAINEY KRAL
L
ove is in the air this February, whether you’re feeling the romance or enjoying time with family and friends – and even pets! San Diegans are no strangers to magnificent sunsets and long walks on the beach, of course, but Valentine’s Day is a great chance to stop and appreciate our neighborhood and our community. Make a date with your loved ones to stroll down a familiar trail, explore a new museum exhibit, or make a reservation at your favorite restaurant. Or, mark your calendars for some of San Diego’s unique Valentine’s Day events!
FOR THE LOVE OF CHOCOLATE
VALENTINE’S DAY FILM FESTIVAL
Feb. 8, 12 – 5 p.m. | Historic Downtown Escondido
Feb. 14, 7:30 p.m. | Don Powell Theatre, San Diego State University
The Escondido Chocolate Festival is a favorite celebration of all things chocolate. Beyond sampling chocolates from more than 20 shops – complete with wine, beer, and spirits pairings – festival-goers can enjoy chocolate-making classes, live music, glass-blowing demonstrations, and more entertainment.
Student filmmakers from San Diego State University’s School of Theatre, Television, and Film present a series of romantic short films. Bring a date – but leave kids under six at home – for this one-of-a-kind evening, as each filmmaker takes a different approach to filming love.
