FROM THE PUBLISHER VOL. 10, NO. 4 TM
Creating Lasting Memories
M
y wife and I have been blessed with extended families that are very involved in our lives. Being a transplant from Texas (where most of my family still lives), I can appreciate that my wife is a rare third generation San Diegan. She is lucky to have most of her family close by. While we try to spend as much time as possible with both sides of the family, sometimes it gets a little difficult to get everyone together at the same time due to busy schedules and locations. Spending time with the family creates lasting memories. Six years ago, shortly after my grandmother passed away, my grandfather decided to start a tradition of an annual family reunion trip. So each summer, my wife and I take our kids to a lake house outside of Austin, TX for the annual Breaux Family Reunion. For a week, we get to visit and catch up with multiple generations of Breauxs. Our kids hang with their cousins, and the older generation can reminisce about the good ol’ days. It’s been an awesome family tradition that my late grandfather started and left to the family for years to come. My aunt, uncles, and dad are carrying on the annual tradition. And continuing with the creating memories theme, this year my wife’s family surprised everyone with a family trip (thank you T & D). We were able to spend a week with my wife’s parents and her brother and sister’s families. As we cruised through the blue Caribbean waters and various ports of call, we all had a blast visiting and spending time together. The entire experience – the six months leading up to the vacation and the vacation itself – was amazing. Our kids and their cousins ruled the ship (or at least they thought), and all of us adults acted like kids again – even my wife’s parents! There was no shortage of laughs and memorable moments, nor is there a shortage of great photos. I guarantee that we will all be talking about this for years to come. Since these vacations have had such a positive impact on us, I wanted to take a moment to make sure that our families know how much we appreciate spending time with them (yes, some of them actually read this magazine!). Thank you to my late grandparents. Thank you to my dad. Thank you to my aunts and uncles for continuing the traditions, and thank you to my in-laws for putting together a fantastic trip. We love you guys! And thank YOU for being a reader of 92127 Magazine. Please don’t be a stranger. PAULA AND MARTHA CONTRERAS EMBRACE THEIR COMMUNITY AND THEIR CULTURE
P
aula and Martha Contreras are lifelong Santaluz residents, and they love their neighborhood community. They attend Pacific Ridge School in Carlsbad, where Paula’s favorite subjects are history and science – she’s interested in the past and its effect on the future. Martha enjoys her studies of multiple languages: Spanish, French, and English. The Contreras sisters are first generation Americans – both parents immigrated from Mexico, and the girls are native English and Spanish speakers. They appreciate the support and opportunities they find at school. Martha mentioned Ms. Juskaitis and extra meetings to help with grammar. “This improvement would not have been possible if I did not meet with Ms. Juskaitis and if she did not care so much about her students.” Paula commented on the opportunity for global travel at Pacific Ridge. “Last year I went to China for two weeks with my classmates,” she said. “This year I spent a week in the Northern Sierras backpacking with a group of classmates.” As far as extracurriculars and

volunteerism, Martha plays varsity basketball and lacrosse, while Paula does both varsity and club lacrosse. Both are members of the Student Equity Advisory (S.E.A.), ensuring diversity on campus and that all students feel safe, strong, and represented within the community. The sisters are co-leaders of Latinos Unidos on campus, an ethnicity group that puts on events to help spread the culture and raise money to assist the Latino community. “I have volunteered in Rosarito, Mexico,” Martha shared, “where I went to an orphanage and brought kids clothes and toys – such as my precious LEGO set at the time.” Paula is in the process of creating a nonprofit with their eldest sister Andrea, helping impoverished kids underserved by the educational system in Mexico, specifically orphans living in Tijuana. “We plan on doing this by once a week giving classes: English, Computing, Current Issues, and Math Tutoring.” The twins’ future goals also align with their global outlook: Paula would like to study international relations or environmental science, and Martha’s looking at international business with hopes to study abroad for at least one year.

T
he Rancho Bernardo Community Council (RBCC) recently recognized talented local artists in two events. The 2nd Annual Community Flag Contest invited local residents to design flags representing the Rancho Bernardo community. The contest was established last year by former RBCC Student Representative Leily Rezvani. Winning entries were displayed at local schools and at the RBCC’s RB Alive booth, as well as being showcased during the Independence Day parade. This year’s winners were James Thomsen in the preschool category, Benjamin Galarza-Boquin
Riley Trecker
in the elementary school category, and Marcie Wessels in the adult category. The 9th Annual Chalk It Up event hosted 82 participants showing off their outdoor creativity at Sharp Rees-Stealy’s Rancho Bernardo Campus. “All who attended had a wonderful time,” shared RBCC President Robin Kaufman. “We had some who said they have come for several years and some who said this was their first time.” Prizes were awarded for first, second, and third place in age group categories, and this year’s talented participant pool resulted in a number of ties. Preschool winners were
Charles Wilson, Simrat, Kaur, and Mia Vargas. Elementary winners were Hazel Kingery, Isabela Baca, Ganga Menon, Eavan Cash, Nina Guran, and Quinn Wetergard. Middle school winners were Jessie Lin, Natalie Baza, and Preena Maruthavelu. High school winners were Riley Trecker, Kaylee Newbanks, and Pamela Luna. Adult winners were Lori Baca, Anna Lakshmi, Rodrigo Baca, Jill Trecker, and Joy Scape. Senior winner was Sandy Moll, and Lori Baca was named overall winner. Kids Helping Kids
KID COACHES TRAIN THEIR OWN COACH AT THE ANNUAL COACHES CUP by KELLEY GUSICH
W
ith over $30,000 in funds raised this year, North County Gymnastics and Gyminny Kids have once again combined their efforts to benefit Rady Children’s Hospital. The Coaches Cup happened on June 9, gathering athletes and their coaches from North County Gymnastics/Gyminny Kids, Pacific Coast Gymnastics, Poway Gymnastics, and the Peach Pit. The event combines student demonstrations and circus performances, and in an interesting role reversal, the top fundraising athlete for each coach then gets to coach that coach for the event. “Most children think an adult over the age of 14 is old,” Daniel Gundert, Director of Operations and Head Team Coach for North County Gymnastics and Gyminny Kids noted, “so the fundraising kids think the idea of their old coach competing is just hilarious!” Poway Gymnastics donated the equipment for the event, at a value well over $10,000, and the time and effort the fundraisers put into the event has proven the most heartwarming and memorable part. From lemonade stands to collecting pledges door-to-door, kid athletes for the Coaches Cup bring everyone together for the crucial cause of children’s health. “This is what we believe as a company,” Daniel affirmed, “but more importantly, this is the life lesson we want to teach our children. If you want something in life, you need to give first without expectation of anything in return. It’s not about the competition, it’s about giving back!” The goal for the Coaches Cup is to see the event grow every year, with a bigger picture vision to eventually have one in every major city across the United States. This way, any company with the title “coach” can fundraise for their local hospital. Imagine any sport: CrossFit, swimming, football, wrestling, diving, track and field – the list of possibilities is endless – with athletes giving their time and coaches getting to compete in the sport they love to benefit the greater good. “Rady Children’s has touched so many of our lives including my son, our employees, and customers, to name a few. Rady’s truly does great things for families regardless of their ability to pay for medical services,” shared Daniel. The 2019 Coaches Cup saw North County Gymnastics as its top fundraiser, followed by Pacific Coast and Poway Gymnastics. “I was sore for a week after the day of the competition, but it was the highlight of my year,” Daniel said. “That feeling of giving is something we want to pass on.”
“This is the life lesson we want to teach our children. If you want something in life, you need to give first without expectation of anything in return. It’s not about the competition, it’s about giving back!”

DIGITAL MUSIC: HOW CAN I CREATE IT? I
n the last decade the face of digital music recording has changed dramatically. Now, for a modest budget, a bedroom producer can have all of the tools necessary to make a great sounding recording. There’s only one issue… how do you use all this stuff?! Finding the DAW (digital audio workstation) that’s right for you can be a daunting enough task, but knowing the ins and outs of your software can take years to master without guidance. The best bet for any aspiring producer is targeted, hands-on training, customized to their program preferences, learning styles, and experience. YouTube might have a slew of videos, but it’s a distant second to an expert instructor with hands-on training. Luckily, Studio West employs a team of experienced engineers and producers that are happy to show students the ropes. One-onone instruction at Studio West offers aspiring creatives direct answers, not just to broad, easily searchable questions, but specific difficulties with workflow. Offering help in
topics including production and arrangement, mixing and recording, Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, and FL Studio, the team of experts knows that one-on-one lessons leads to progress in tracks production fairly quickly. Studio West offers one-on-one instruction options to all ages in addition to their year-long post-secondary diploma in audio production. Another not-to-miss opportunity is the Youth Programs, offered over seven individual weeks of summer camps. Pair this with the school year Production Workshop – a quarterly collective of talented kids meeting once a week to produce incredible music – and your teen has a head start in this amazing industry. If you want to up your game, hands-on training is your best bet!

Future Problem Solving State Meet
Small Business of the Year
Local students recently attended the Future Problem Solving (FPS) State Meet, held in San Francisco. Led by Coach Nancy Myles, the teams and individuals from Turtleback Elementary School (TES) and Bernardo Heights Middle School (BHMS) put their expertise to the test after the season’s practice. To qualify for the state meet, the students explored the topics of food loss and food waste. “The children learned a lot about how our behaviors as well as other global issues contribute to this problem,” explained Nancy. For the State Meet, the assigned theme was Coping With Stress. The first TES team included Caleb Johnson, William Liu, Nicole Cabasa, and Rintaro Saga. The second team included Amalia Benito, Tanav Kambhampai, Kevin Wang, and Sparsh Singhai. Though unable to attend the State Meet, Jimothy Brewington, Aadarsh Rajendran, and Avaneesh Sharma also participated in the program this year. BHMS eighth grader Shreya Singh participated as an individual, creating a four-minute story-telling recording about food loss. “Shreya was invited to Internationals for this performance and her performance recording has already been sent for international evaluation!” Nancy said.
Second Chance Beer Company, an independent brewery founded in Carmel Mountain Ranch, was recently named the 77th Assembly District 2019 Small Business of the Year. The business stands out for its commitment to environmental sustainability. Through its charity program, Giving Second Chances, the company donates one percent of all annual sales to organizations that serve people, animals, and the planet. More than 70% of the company’s furnishings are upcycled, recycled, and repurposed as well. “Second Chance Beer Company has served as a worthy example for many businesses to follow,” said Assemblymember Brian Maienschein. “Despite being a relatively new brewery, the company has contributed tremendously to both the economic strength and environmental sustainability of our community.” The brewery was founded by Marty Mendiola, Curtis Hawes, and Virginia Morrison. In addition to the original Carmel Mountain Ranch brewery and taproom, they now have a tasting room in North Park.
2019 National Night Out Community members are invited to attend the 2019 National Night Out event on Aug. 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the San Diego Police Department Northeastern Division Station, 13396 Salmon River Rd. National Night Out is an annual event designed to heighten awareness of crime and drug prevention, generate support for anti-crime programs, and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/community partnerships. Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, and military bases worldwide with block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts, and other community events on the first Tuesday every August. Residents throughout San Diego are encouraged to lock their doors, turn on outside lights, and spend the evening with neighbors and first responders. Learn more at natw.org.

Both Pets and Their Humans Receive Progressive and Innovative Service at Santaluz Animal Care by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos by Sean Barrett Photography
O
n May 18, Santaluz Animal Care (SAC) held its grand opening, beginning a veterinary practice that owner, Dr. Laura (Greenlee) Johnson, calls “progressive and innovative.” SAC is focused on creating a high-quality client service experience, along with transparency and client involvement in the veterinary care of their pets. Clients and their pets will notice the Fear Free difference the moment they step through our doors. “At SAC, there is no front desk. Instead, clients and pets enter the Welcome Area, where they are greeted by certified veterinary assistants who guide them into an exam room right away, and remain with them throughout their entire visit. They are given undivided and individual attention,” said Dr. Johnson. Clients are also welcome to be present for most of the treatments performed on their pets. SAC provides general practice veterinary medicine, dentistry, and soft tissue surgery (including spays, neuters, mass removals and other basic procedures). Orthopedic and specialty surgeries can be scheduled at SAC with a mobile board-certified surgeon. The practice specializes in the care of dogs, cats, and some exotics including rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice, and reptiles. SAC treats sick pets and handles veterinary emergencies, as well as focusing on preventative medicine and wellness visits. The clinic also offers professional 32 • 92127MAGAZINE.COM • July | August 2019

grooming and a variety of prescription dietary options. Pet medications and veterinary diets are available both onsite and through home-delivery from their competitively priced online pharmacy. In addition to these traditional services, SAC also offers Complementary Therapies (Alternative Medicine), including acupuncture, Chinese veterinary medicine, cold laser therapy, and regenerative medicine. Dr. Johnson and her highly trained staff also use non-invasive diagnostic tools that are progressive and unique, such as digital thermal imaging, stance analysis, abdominal ultrasound, and digital radiography, as well as digital dental radiography. “The breadth of our offerings, as well as the Fear Free approach to our patients and true quality customer service, is what sets us apart and goes above and beyond the standard veterinary practice experience,” explained Dr. Johnson. They even boast a cat only exam room, which was designed to make kitty vet visits as comfortable as possible. Dr. Johnson grew up in San Diego and is proud to be serving the local community through SAC. The practice is located in the southern-most end of the Piazza Santaluz buildings and is just under 2,000 square feet in size. She put a great deal of thought into the design and layout of the office. “All exam rooms have natural lighting and sliding barn doors with glass centers so the rooms feel open and inviting, instead of clinical and claustrophobic,” stated Dr. Johnson. M
anaging your family’s health care is not usually top of mind until a loved one is sick or you’ve had a life change. Choosing the right care can be overwhelming and confusing, but selecting a primary care doctor ahead of time helps ensure the best care for your family when the need arises. A primary care doctor coordinates your family’s routine and specialty care. Finding the right doctor will depend on your unique needs. If you haven’t given much thought to this important decision, here’s a good place to start: Decide which type of primary care doctor you want. There are four types of primary care doctors: • Pediatricians care for children and adolescents. • Family medicine doctors treat the whole family, from infants to older adults. • Internal medicine doctors treat adults age 18 and up. • Internal medicine/pediatric doctors are board certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics, and treat people of all ages. Think about your personal preferences. • Are you more comfortable with a male or female doctor? • Do you want your doctor’s office close to your home or work? • Do you need a doctor who speaks a language other than English? • Which hospitals does the doctor admit to? Consider convenience. Many North County families that have busy schedules look for a doctor who offers a wide variety of ways to access care. These can include: • Video and phone appointments. • The convenience of a medical center where many services, such as pharmacy, lab, radiology, and urgent care, are all under one roof. • Same-day appointments. • After-hours pediatric care for when the kids are sick. • The ability to securely manage your and your family’s health care online by messaging your doctor’s office, making appointments, viewing lab results, and more. Confirm your insurance coverage. When you find the ideal doctor, you’ll need to verify if they are in your health plan network. Call the number listed on your insurance card to confirm, and let your insurance carrier know you’ve selected that person as your new primary care doctor. Sharp Rees-Stealy can help you navigate your options and make it easy to find a doctor. Plus, they accept almost all health insurance plans. Select your doctor at sharp.com/srsdoctor or by calling 858-264-2539.

he Super Dentists’ Dr. Kami Hoss and Dr. Nazli Keri, also known as their alter-egos Dr. Have One Super Smile and The Tooth Keri, respectively, are transforming the dental experience for children and adults. The Super Dentists provides a unique patient experience through original movies, music, and fun superhero and villain characters. The offices look like theme parks and feature video games, a dress-up area, and even a special door for children. “We’ve taken something that is typically feared and created an environment where kids beg to visit and don’t want to leave,” said Dr. Kami Hoss, Co-Founder of The Super Dentists. “Because we know that if kids like going to the dentist, they will go to the dentist and will take care of their mouths.” The Super Dentists experience begins before patients even step foot through the door with the practice’s innovative augmented reality app. Parents receive a link to the augmented reality welcome video and watch it with their children so they know what to expect. They are also introduced to The Super Dentists characters: Dr. Have One Super Smile, The Tooth Keri, MeloD, Cavitar, and Molar. “The app is fun and interactive,” said Dr. Kami Hoss. “Kids can take their picture with the characters to become part of the experience, then share photos and videos with their parents and friends via text or social media.” Though pediatric dentistry is the core service at The Super Dentists, the practice also offers dentistry for parents and orthodontics for the whole family – and it can be fun, too! “We’ve changed everything adults hate about going to the dentist,” Dr. Kami Hoss said. The Super Dentists are very active in the community, especially with causes related to children and education. They regularly participate in speaking engagements and career fairs at local schools, and host on-site job shadowing opportunities, wellness fairs, and mouth guard fitting clinics. They also provide free dental care on Free Dental Day every year, and pay kids for their leftover Halloween candy that’s then donated to military troops overseas through their Candy Buy Back program. “We love seeing the reaction of children and parents when they come to see The Super Dentists and interact with all of our services and amenities,” Dr. Kami Hoss said. “We know how important oral health is to your overall health, and we are honored to be making a big difference in peoples’ lives and futures.”

r. Jodi McGrady opened McGrady Dental Group with one goal: taking care of families. “I love working with kids and helping to introduce them to dentistry without fear,” Dr. McGrady explained. “By offering services for the entire family, kids don’t have to age out of our practice, and busy moms can get their teeth cleaned at the same time as the kids.” She has always had an interest in comprehensive, community-minded dentistry. After receiving her first dental degree at University of Pittsburgh, she studied hospital dentistry and trained to treat children with special needs at University of Iowa, receiving a master’s degree in dental public health. She and her husband, periodontist Dr. Michael Spilotro, practiced together in Santa Fe, NM for 10 years before relocating to San Diego. Dr. McGrady continued studying pediatric
dentistry at University of California Los Angeles and Rady Children’s Hospital, completing her pediatric residency in 2011. She remains involved with the hospital. “I’m currently the Chief of Dental Services at Rady Children’s Hospital,” she explained. “This gives us one more option for kids with health concerns or extensive treatment needs to be treated in a safe environment.” Providing safe, high-quality treatment and serving the community is a family affair at McGrady Dental Group. Dr. McGrady lives locally with her husband and three teenagers. Her husband works in the office two days a month, and two of her children join Dr. McGrady on trips to Ensenada, Mexico, volunteering with 1000 Smiles. “I enjoy the relationships you build in pediatrics and family dentistry,” Dr. McGrady concluded. “You truly watch kids grow up and get to share in their joys and successes.”

r. Jeremy Bold has been treating patients at Bold Smiles Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, located in the 4S Ranch Village Center, for nearly 15 years. As a 92127 resident himself, Dr. Bold treats his patients as neighbors and friends. “We wave to them as they pass by for their morning Starbucks,” Dr. Bold said. “They often stop in to say ‘Hi!’ on the way to do yoga or go to Subway for lunch.” Patients are greeted by name and always made to feel at home. Personalized dental care is at the heart of Bold Smiles Dentistry. “We strive to know more about each of our guests than what is revealed on a set of x-rays,” Dr. Bold said. Scheduling one patient at a time allows him time to interact with them, answer questions, and provide exceptional quality dentistry with a gentle and caring touch. The practice also offers complimentary movies, warmed water, and use of a massage chair during treatments to help make patients’ experience as stressfree and relaxed as possible.
Dr. Bold’s compassionate care is complemented by his advanced training and utilization of the latest cutting-edge technology. In fact, Dr. Bold and his team pride themselves on being able to offer one-visit dentistry. “Using computer-assisted technology, we can make beautiful, long-lasting, all porcelain crowns, onlays, and veneers in a single visit,” explained Dr. Bold. “This process usually takes two or more visits spread out over several weeks in other offices, but is sped up to be done in around two hours using the CEREC system inside of our office, eliminating the need for temporary crowns or having to get numbed a second time.” Dr. Bold is certified in and offers such dental technology as Invisalign, Diode Lasers, Power teeth whitening, and CEREC. He is committed to staying current on advancements in the industry, and attends many continuing education programs and conferences every year to stay up to date on the latest dental technology and techniques. When the workday is done, Dr. Bold prefers spending time with his wife Jennifer and their two children. As a 4S Ranch resident, he embraces living in the same community that he works in. “My kids go to school here, they play sports here. I run into patients at Target, Ralphs, Karl Strauss, you name it! That is one of the main reasons that I wanted to have a practice here – so that I could practice where I live. I’m grateful to be part of such a great community,” Dr. Bold shared. “It’s so rewarding to get to know my patients on a personal level, and to get to see their smiles away from the office.” “There’s something endearing about having a small-town feel, even when you go to the dentist,” said one patient. “Dr. Bold, his wife, and kids enjoy being part of the local community, which is a special detail about his practice. He can connect to patients and families both at work and around town.”

hether in her warm, welcoming office or at home in the North County community, Dr. Susan Hong is committed to fostering lifelong relationships. Her patients’ needs and comfort are her highest priority, and she uses her years of expertise and cutting-edge technology to create lasting smiles. Dr. Hong has practiced dentistry for nearly 20 years. A native New Yorker, she ran a private practice in downtown New York City and taught at Columbia University School of Dentistry before moving to San Diego. She spent 10 years practicing downtown before deciding she wanted to connect more closely with her North County community, where she lives in Rancho Peñasquitos with her husband and three children. She opened her Rancho Bernardo family and cosmetic dentistry practice in 2015, continuing to provide comprehensive, compassionate care with the highest-quality technology. Her office is equipped with heated massage chairs and televisions, and she offers sedation for anxious patients, but more importantly, her focus on the whole patient creates an effective, trust-based relationship. A key part of that is staying up to date with the latest developments in dental care. Dr. Hong has recently implemented a new technology that allows for a radiation free way to examine teeth like never before. DEXIS CariVu is a new alternative to traditional X-rays that bathes individual teeth in near-infrared light while capturing live video and still images. Because it photographs the tooth from multiple angles, CariVu is especially useful for discovering cracks and early-stage cavities, letting Dr. Hong recommend preventive measures and individualized treatment. “It is a wonderful adjunct to the technology that I already use in providing comprehensive care,” Dr. Hong shared, adding that CariVu is also beneficial for young children and pregnant women who want to avoid ionizing radiation. Dr. Hong also offers Invisalign, laser periodontal treatment, metal-free restorations, implant restorations, and TMJ treatment. FROM THE DENTIST
MOUTHGUARDS: The First Step to Protecting Kids From Sports-Related Dental Injuries
by SPENCER MAUSETH, D.D.S., 4S Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics
D
ental injuries can occur at any time. Whether kids are playing competitive contact sports or simply goofing off at the park, the risk is always there. Protective equipment, such as a mouthguard, is often the first line of defense in preventing these injuries. Sports-related traumatic dental injuries most often result from falls, collisions, or contact with other players, sports equipment, or hard surfaces. Mouthguard use has been shown to reduce the risk of these types of sport-related dental injuries since mouthguards are designed take the brunt of the force of impact. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), dental injuries can occur in both organized and unorganized sports, at all levels, and to participants of all ages, genders, and skill levels. And although the ADA and the International Academy of Sports Dentistry recommend the use of
mouthguards in 29 sports or activities, currently the National Federation of State High School Associations only mandates the wearing of mouthguards in football, ice hockey, lacrosse, field hockey, and wrestlers with braces. Education Equals Prevention One of the biggest factors in preventing sports-related traumatic dental injuries is education. Parents, coaches, trainers, and dentists need to work together to know and understand the benefits of using a properly fitted mouthguard. Parents are encouraged to tell their child’s dentist if their child participates in team sports or other activities with risks of injury to the teeth, jaw, mouth, lips, cheeks, or tongue. This includes activities that may seem less obvious, such as gymnastics or ice skating. Likewise, dentists are encouraged to ask these questions of their patients and help them find the appropriate type of mouthguard, ensure a proper fit, and evaluate the various costs and benefits of this important piece of protective equipment.

Nighthawks Leave the Nest
G
raduation season has dawned upon us in the Nighthawk family. On June 13, we witnessed hundreds of Nighthawks finally leaving the nest, ready to take on the rest of the world. Del Norte’s mission statement is, “Inspiring passion and preparing all students to be college ready, future focused, and globally aware,” and families and friends saw that phrase in full action on graduation day. Throughout the ceremony, wise words were shared with excited students. Principal Bryan Schultz took the stage to express his excitement and hope for the graduating Class of 2019. Student speaker Gil
Pasternak delivered a moving and passionate speech about the unity of Nighthawks in all circumstances and how that quality will translate into the real world. And, to many Nighthawks’ surprise, Mr. Greg Mizel, former principal of Del Norte High, showed up at graduation to express his pride and gratitude for the Nighthawks’ accomplishments and for consistently adhering to the policy of Home Court Advantage. Students were excited to see Mr. Mizel again, along with his exciting and contagious energy. As the Nighthawks received their diplomas, thousands of family and friends stood in the stadium, cheering their loved ones on. It was an emotional and

powerful moment in the lives of all present at the graduation. The Class of 2019 has finally reached the day it has been waiting and preparing for. While the students threw their graduation caps into the air, we know their futures are grounded in success. They are prepared to take on the rest of the world, and we hope they will carry the life lessons learned at Del Norte into the rest of their lives.

Is Your Home TV Worthy? by SCOTT VOAK
T
he American Dream, a lifestyle and real estate TV show has asked me to find and showcase homes and communities in the Inland North County area that will generate audience interest both locally and nationally. We have already shot the Maderas Golf Course and a home in The Heritage that sits on the course. We are looking for homes in the following communities to feature: Santaluz, The Crosby, Fairbanks Ranch, The Trails, Del Sur, 4S Ranch, Stonebridge Estates, and Pacific Highlands Ranch. If you are thinking of selling your home in the next year and believe we can tell a story weaving together your home and the community that would be worthy of local and possibly national television exposure, please let me know. We cannot select all homes as we are trying to find great homes to promote each community. In as such, in each community we would prefer to showcase a higher-end home to better represent the community. Shows air about one month after shooting, so advanced notice is needed to adequately plan and highlight the home in the right timeframe to leverage the television appearance to help increase demand and the final sales SCOTT VOAK price of your home. SADDLE UP IN SAN DIEGO Take to the Trails and Make New Equine Friends This Summer by LAINEY KRAL
T
here’s nothing quite like leaning back in the saddle or petting a velvety nose while the blue summer sky stretches above you. San Diego is home to a vibrant, varied equine community. Whether you’re the parent of an enthusiastic future cowgirl, a grown-up barn kid who hasn’t ridden in years, or just plain curious, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and experience something new. Besides lessons and summer camps, guided trail rides are a great opportunity for new riders or those just getting back in the saddle. Options include giddying up through the hills of Poway, riding through the surf on a beach ride, and wine tasting adventures in Temecula. Many facilities offer both public and private rides – especially for larger groups, it’s smart to call ahead to confirm availability. Be sure to check the weather policy too, in case of cancellations. If getting in the saddle isn’t your style, there are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy the world of horses from the ground. The Del Mar Racetrack may be San Diego’s most famous equine destination, but don’t miss the hunter, jumper, and equitation events at nearby Showpark of San Diego. The 2019 Poway Rodeo is also coming up on Sept. 27 and 28, showcasing Western disciplines like barrel racing and roping. San Diego even has a thriving polo scene – check out organizations like Lakeside Polo Club, Poway Polo Club, or San Diego Polo Club for beginner lessons or upcoming events to watch. You can also combine a love of horses with a love of making a difference. The San Diego area has a number of therapeutic riding centers and equine rescues that are often open to volunteers and support. Whatever your interests and wherever you go, whether you’re sitting astride a thoroughbred or a pony, remember to pause for a bit and just enjoy the moment. Have a good ride!

STABLE SAFETY • Wear closed-toe shoes, and strap on your helmet before getting in the saddle. • When meeting an unfamiliar horse, always ask its owner whether it’s okay to pet it, feed treats, or take photos. • Walk, don’t run! Sudden movements and loud noises can make horses nervous. • Pay attention to facility rules and listen to your instructor – every barn and every horse is unique!

Colossus Painting Provides Its Customers With a Better Product for an Affordable Price
rior to starting Colossus Painting, Joshua Berner sold paint to contractors, using his expertise to teach them how to resolve issues and specify which types of paint would work best for a given project. It wasn’t long before Joshua decided to use his knowledge of the painting industry to start his own painting company and, in 2008, Colossus Painting was born. “I wanted to create a company that could serve customers much better and provide a better product for an affordable price,” Joshua explained. Today, Colossus Painting has made Joshua’s dream a reality by providing interior and exterior painting of homes and businesses, while also offering repair of stucco, drywall, and wood. “Colossus is unique in its approach to a project,” stated Joshua. “We tailor your job to the best system or options of systems for your home. This differs from a lot of other companies in the area.” Color retention is a big issue with exterior paint jobs here in San Diego as well as washability and durability they contend with on interior jobs. Colossus has solutions for this. “Our feeling is when your job is complete, it should stand out in appearance and longevity compared to those painted by someone else,” Joshua added. It’s important to note that a little paint can go a long way in changing the appearance of a home. “People forget about paint,” said Joshua. “It is a great way to make your home look great in a relatively short amount of time. We paint and stain a lot of cabinets, front doors, and garage doors.” From the beginning, the team at Colossus Painting has made an effort to give back. “We have helped a lot of schools and people,” explained Joshua. “We’ve painted homes for free. It’s a joy for us and our workers as much as it is for the homeowner who is having a difficult life situation.” Joshua is proud of his family-oriented, friendly, and professional staff. “I believe that when someone hires us, they realize they are dealing with a knowledgeable and professional company and will receive a great paint job,” shared Joshua. “We help the customer through the process and can get them the right tools to make their job successful.” 58 • 92127MAGAZINE.COM • July | August 2019
