A
little over a year ago, I wrote about how our kids were taking music lessons and having fun learning to play and sing various popular songs. They are now into music more than ever before, and a lot has happened in a year. In case you are hearing about this for the first time, Peyton plays guitar and sings. Audrey plays drums and piano, but she insists that drums are her number one. The two of them have come a long way over the last year. For starters, they formed a band and decided to officially name their two-person “brother and sister” duo Call Me Breaux. When we discussed their name choice, both Audrey and Peyton explained that people have called them by their last name (pronounced “bro”) their entire life – especially in sports – so it just makes sense for a band name. When my wife and I realized how much they liked singing and performing, we started to gradually convert our dining room into a small music studio. On any given day, you can often hear some type of music being performed by one or both of them. And every once in a while, something magical happens when they come together and play their growing set of songs. It’s fun to be preparing dinner and hear your kids jamming out in the other room. Who needs a radio when you can get live performances inside your house daily? And although they love to play music for the pure sense of accomplishment, now they’ve experienced the thrill of performing live on stage. Last month, they were invited to play a set at the world-famous Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood. A couple of weeks later, they played the House of Blues in San Diego. This was particularly special for them because quite a few of their friends were at the show. They made it clear to me that having their friends in the audience was the coolest thing ever! It’s a pretty crazy thing to stand in the audience and watch your kids (ages 13 and 12) get up on stage in front of a crowd. As a parent, I experience a wide range of emotions. I’m nervous for them. I’m proud of them. And I’m amazed at their determination and willingness to put themselves out there. So far, they’ve only played cover songs. But recently, they have decided that writing and producing their own original songs is where they want to go. They said that it would be awesome to hear their songs playing on the radio one day, so now they are more determined than ever to make this happen. A special thank you to The Fine Tune Academy for continuing to teach music theory to our kids, to Studio West for providing a great local professional recording atmosphere, and to family and friends (you know who you are) that offer amazing support for their music journey. Be sure to check out their next performance at the House of Blues in San Diego on March 31. A limited number of discounted tickets are available. Email hello@callmebreaux.com for more information.

Summer CAMP for KIDS AGES 7-12
A NEW FORCE to be reckoned with MEET THE SAN DIEGO FORCE COACHES Coach at San Diego Force FC // VINCE WALLACE I grew up in Rancho Penasquitos and found a passion for soccer while playing for “PQ Express”. I then went on to play at Palomar Junior College, San Diego State University, and a handful of men’s Premier teams. One of those teams included the San Diego Surf where I had the pleasure of being teammates with some of my current coaching associates at SD Force FC – Jose Ocampo, Paul Curry, and Kino Valdez. I am fortunate to coach for the SD Force FC because the club understands that winning does not create development, but development creates winners. Winning at all costs stunts the growth of children’s learning and puts unnecessary pressure that inhibits the ability to perform at a high level. Parents should surround their kids with positive coaches who prioritize the enjoyment of the game and how it should be played as opposed to the result. That is how you raise a happy and high performing athlete.

hile many teens love to play video games, not many actually design their own. Del Sur resident Max McLoughlin has done just that! A high school junior, Max is the creator of a game called Invasion Without Authorization, released in the App Store. This free game, which can be played on iPhones, is a simple shooting game that can be played for a few minutes or straight through. “The premise of the game is that the player has to kill invading aliens using cannon fire,” Max explained. “The challenge is that the aliens are hiding, and the player needs to ricochet cannon balls off walls to kill them. There are 36 levels.” Max developed this game over the summer as part of a program called MakeSchool.
“NOW I COMPETE IN THE LARGEST INDOOR COMPETITION IN THE WORLD EVERY YEAR, IN BOTH STATE AND NATIONAL COMPETITIONS.”

While Max has dual citizenship with the United States and Canada, he’s lived in Del Sur for the past eight and a half years. Max attends Del Norte High School, where his favorite subject is AP Computer Science. “What I like most about the school is that I get to take classes like 3D Animation and Introduction to Computer Science,” Max shared. “I have had the good luck of having several teachers that really enjoy teaching.” In addition to designing video games, Max enjoys archery. He’s been shooting since sixth grade. “I just thought it was cool and wanted to give it a try,” Max recalled. “Now I compete in the largest indoor competition in the world every year, in both state and national competitions.” Max is inspired by actor and filmmaker Tommy Wiseau. “He had a dream and he made it happen. He has a lot of inspiring quotes,” Max said. “When someone asked him how to start writing a screenplay, he responded ‘start.’ I find that motivational.” He has dreams of his own, which include studying game design at the University of Utah. “I want to work in the video game industry,” he declared. With such an early start in the gaming world, Max is already on his way! ¢

THREE-IN-ONE THE CORK AND CRAFT IS A UNIQUE COMBINATION OF BREWERY, WINERY, AND CASUAL FINE DINING by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos provided by The Cork and Craft
T
he Cork and Craft is a unique concept where an in-house brewery and winery share space with a restaurant known for signature dishes such as bacon-wrapped tenderloin and maple leaf duck breast. The Cork and Craft produces beer and wine that is served onsite as well as around the globe. The restaurant is a natural evolution from a small urban winery that opened in 2012. “We began with small pop-up dinners out of our small space and then expanded to offer a full restaurant when the space next door became available. We wanted to provide a dining experience unlike any other you’d expect with a winery/brewery,” revealed Cassie Valenciano, Director of Communications. “Tasting wine or beer alone is one experience, but enjoying them alongside various dishes and experiencing various pairings is the other side of the coin that you can’t get at many other places.” Located in a business park in Rancho Bernardo, many are surprised at the warmth and relaxing vibe they feel when walking through the doors of The Cork and Craft. The atmosphere is one of casual fine dining. “Our restaurant has an industrial feel with the exposed brick walls and light fixtures. Our open-faced kitchen is viewable from the dining room, creating an inviting and welcoming ambiance,” explained Valenciano. When it comes to the beer offerings at The Cork and Craft, there is a core selection which is available for guests year-round. The Cork and Craft also features special releases, such as their first barrel-aged series that they released this year. “We used a stout base beer and filled Pappy Van Winkle barrels that were over 20 years old with that base beer. They’ve been soaking and aging for two years and we released them in a four different bottles to represent each barrel. These bottles are very special and limited, and we hope everyone enjoys them with good company,” stated Valenciano. For those who want an exclusive dining adventure, executive chef Scott Cannon will design a 4- to 10-course tasting created around the unique preferences of the guests. “This is called the Abnormal Experience and is one of our newest offerings,” said Valenciano. As The Cork and Craft has evolved, the brewery/winery/restaurant has been recognized as a must-visit spot in San Diego. In 2016, The Cork and Craft earned the 2016 Business of the Year award for the North San Diego Business Chamber, and owner and CEO Matt De Loach was recognized as one of the top 40 under-40 CEOs in San Diego. Close-Knit Crew The Putt Family Creates Memories Together in 4S Ranch by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo by Spark Photography

“We are a very close-knit family, and we make a point to always laugh and have fun no matter what we are doing.”
pending time together as a family is a top priority for Cheryll, Jordan, and Nyah Putt. “We are a very close-knit family, and we make a point to always laugh and have fun no matter what we are doing,” said Cheryll. She and her children especially enjoy watching Marvel and Star Wars movies together. They also feel fortunate to live in a tight-knit community like 4S Ranch, a community where Cheryll’s parents live and where the schools are known for their great educational opportunities. “We love being so close to my parents, and we have also created a large network of friends that are more like family. Everything is so accessible here in 4S, and it’s easy for children to go from elementary to high school with the same friends because all of the schools are so close in proximity,” said Cheryll, a native San Diegan who attended Mt. Carmel High School before relocating to Northern California for a time. The Putt family moved to 92127 nine years ago after Jordan finished kindergarten so the children could attend schools in the Poway Unified School District. Jordan is now a freshman at Del Norte High School who enjoys playing football and hanging out with his friends. Nyah is a sixth grader at Oak Valley Middle School and is actively involved with musical theater. “Nyah and I are both very creative. She loves arts and crafts, and I enjoy making cards and other paper crafts. In fact, I volunteered for Art Corps at Oak Valley for three years,” revealed Cheryll. 26 • 92127MAGAZINE.COM • March | April 2018
In addition, Cheryll is working on writing a novel. She has already published a children’s book about therapy, a topic near and dear to her heart. She has a master’s degree in counseling and is a licensed therapist. “I have a private practice in Rancho Bernardo where I help children and adults heal from trauma, abuse, and PTSD. I am also a ‘mom coach.’ In this capacity, I empower moms to rise above feeling overwhelmed and their ‘mom guilt’ and help them enhance their parenting skills so they can be the best moms they can be,” explained Cheryll. ¢

play is the ultimate gift the Solomons hope to impart. Open Monday through Saturday, Kid Ventures offers enrichment classes, open creative playtime, preschool classes, and Kids Night Out Events. New STEAM-based learning classes are part of the Kid Ventures mission as a leading enrichment center for North County families. Saturday afternoons and all day Sunday, Kid Ventures closes for private birthday parties, which have been voted #1 by San Diego families for multiple years in a row. Kid Ventures also recently launched a preschool, which is focused on one-on-one attention and learning. A big goal one day is to have a Kid Ventures inside every children’s hospital around the country as a nonprofit – being a part of the healing process for children with life-threatening illnesses. “This is the core behind everything that is Kid Ventures,” Darren affirmed, “to make a difference in the lives of families everywhere.” ¢

n 2008, Debbie Solomon wanted to translate her background in gymnastics and children’s education into a unique enterprise. She started by purchasing a school bus and turning it into a mini mobile gymnastics studio, allowing her to bring her love of fitness to families across San Diego. The next step was creative design of a facility that is trusted, safe, clean, and highly engaging, sparking the imagination of young children and satisfying the needs of today’s parent in an appealing and adult-friendly space. Together with her husband and business partner, Darren Solomon, they opened their first gym, and Kid Ventures was born. “Kid Ventures has a mission of being a positive space for families just starting out,” said CEO Darren, “where they can make new friends, meet up with old friends, learn, grow, laugh, and celebrate those precious few years of early childhood.” As parents themselves, Debbie and Darren saw the need for an environment where kids could freely flex their imaginations in a safe setting, and give parents the opportunity to remain nearby yet be able to unwind and partake in a café setting, mingling with friends. The result was Kid Ventures, an 8,000-squarefoot open play area that is a boutique-style enrichment center/indoor play area combined with a parent café, providing a one-of-a-kind family experience. “Children are encouraged by a staff of talented and certified ‘edutainers’ to explore in kid-friendly locales such as a pirate ship, castle, or creating masterpieces in the art studio,” Darren explained. “Parents are invited to grab coffee and relax, catch up on emails in the lounge, even catch a yoga class!” Seeing kids developing skills and learning important values while at 30 • 92127MAGAZINE.COM • March | April 2018

FROM THE DENTIST
THE SCOOP ON DENTAL SEALANTS FOR KIDS by DR. SPENCER MAUSETH, 4S Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics
I
t’s no secret to parents that establishing good brushing and flossing habits with their children is one of the best ways to prevent cavities and maintain good oral health. However, some parents may not know that dental sealants are another valuable tool in fighting cavities, especially in children. Dental sealants are clear or tooth-colored plastic material that is applied to the chewing surfaces or grooves of the back teeth (premolars and molars). These surfaces are where most cavities in children form – it’s not always easy to clean these rough and uneven areas where leftover food particles and cavity-causing bacteria hide. Dental sealants act as a barrier to food, plaque, and acid and protect these decay-prone areas of the teeth. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), sealants have been shown to reduce the
risk of decay in molars by nearly 80%. Although adults can also benefit from dental sealants, the earlier they are applied, the better. Kids get their first molars around age six and second molars typically come in around age 12. Sealing these teeth as soon as they break through can really go a long way to ensuring they are cavity-free from the start. As long as there is no existing cavity in the tooth, sealants are typically recommended for all children. So how are sealants applied? It’s an easy, quick, and painless process! Sealants are placed during a routine office visit by a either a dental hygienist or a dentist. There are three simple steps: 1. Teeth should be properly cleaned and examined to make sure that there are no existing cavities in the teeth to be sealed. 2. The teeth are dried and a cleanser is placed on them. This tooth shampoo cleans the grooves of any biomatter so that a strong bond can be formed between the tooth and the sealant. The gel is rinsed off and the teeth are dried once again.
3. The sealant material is applied to the biting surface (grooves) of the teeth to be sealed. A special light is then placed above the tooth to harden the sealant. Combined with proper brushing, flossing, a healthy diet, and regular dental check-ups, the application of dental sealants is an easy and painfree way to help kids in the fight against cavities. ¢

Local Girl Scouts Share Gratitude
Every year, Girl Scout Troop 2119 visits the firefighters at Station 33 to show their appreciation for the work they do. This year, they decorated cookies and painted a holiday-themed post for the station. “The visit was timely since the following week was when San Diego was hit with extreme wildfires,” shared Carla Reichel, Troop Leader. Troop 2119 consists of 11 third grade girls, nine attend Westwood Elementary School, and two attend Classical Academy. This is the troop’s third year together, and Carla explained that this year’s focus has been random acts of kindness. “We have spent time at retirement homes, Helen Woodward, the fire station, and Rady Children’s Hospital doing random acts of kindness,” she said. “We plan to help the homeless, make birthday bags for foster kids, and keep cleaning up our school and community.”

The Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation’s (RBCF) traditional celebration of community service will be held Saturday, April 14 at the Rancho Bernardo High School Performing Arts Center, at 9 a.m. In addition to the recognition ceremony, the event will include opportunities for attendees to learn more about the organizations the volunteers represent, with booths and displays before and after the ceremony. “It’s a great way to say ‘thank you’ to all the representatives from the many volunteer organizations that serve Rancho Bernardo,” said Debbie Kurth, RBCF President and Hats Off to Volunteers Chair. “This is one of our favorite things that we do each year. These individuals and their contributions help to make Rancho Bernardo the wonderful place it is to both work and live.” RBCF celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Savour RB Food Faire Returns Sample tastes and sips from over 25 favorite local restaurants, wineries, and breweries at the 11th Annual Savour RB Food Faire. This year’s event will be held Tuesday, April 10 at the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Over 400 guests from around the community and beyond attended last year’s 10th anniversary event, which has become a favorite local tradition. The event is sponsored by the Rancho Bernardo Business Association (RBBA), with free admission for members and $30 presale tickets for guests. The Savour RB Food Faire is one of the RBBA’s three signature annual events – the others are the Bob Wells Memorial Rubber Ducky Race at Webb Park on July 4 and Casino Night in October. Soroptimist High Tea and Fashion Show
The Friends of the 4S Ranch Library work year-round to support one of the community’s social and educational hubs. The newly elected 2018 Board of Directors is dedicated to furthering that mission. The Friends of the Library (FOL) are now led by President Mary Karscig, Vice President Michael Farrell, Secretary Lynda Moses, Treasurer Nancy Jones, Publicity Chair Abigail Velazquez, and Members at Large Kelley Gusich, Pari Hekmat, May Lin, and Bruce Marchu. The FOL also recently celebrated some extra recognition for a longtime member. Ted Jones was honored as the County of San Diego Volunteer of the Month for December 2017. Ted has been a member of the FOL since 2009, and his active involvement with every book sale and other special events have made a tremendous impact on the organization. Anyone interested in joining the FOL is invited to contact 4srancfol@gmail.com. For more information visit www.4sranchfol.org.
Soroptimist International of Poway (SIP) and Soroptimist International of North San Diego (SINSD) are joining forces again on the philanthropic event of the season. The annual High Tea lets the community come together – with their fanciest hats – for a fashion show, auctions, social hour, refreshments, and more. This year’s event will be held Sunday, March 25 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar. SIP’s Paula Ramos and SINSD’s Amanda Grey serve as this year’s co-chairs, and CBS News 8’s Carlo Cecchetto will be Master of Ceremonies. Fashion Forward creator and television personality Leonard Simpson will present the fashion show. SIP and SINSD’s High Tea benefits a number of programs supporting women and girls, including the clubs’ Transitional Housing Program, which provides apartments for survivors of domestic violence and their children. f your child loves to build robots, Robot City is the place to be this summer! Students learn hands-on with multiple robots, including some to keep for further experimentation at home. OUTPOST SUMMER CAMPS
N
ow more than ever, children need to be away from their devices for extended periods of time, and there is nothing better than a summer day-camp experience to make this a reality. Outpost Summer Camps was founded in 2001 and serves over 1,500 children every summer, completely outdoors and screen-free. The Outpost experience has three pillars that parents have loved for over 15 summers: door-to-door transportation, traditional camp activities (think MUD!), and exceptional, well-trained staff that ensure a quality experience for each child. Outpost is open to children ages 3 to 14, and according to Owner/Director Stuart Jones, “Each of our camps has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” The three-week sessions are what make Outpost so unique. Stuart explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” Another way the camps stand out is with their commitment to safety. Outpost Summer Camps has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association since inception and operates under permit from the County of San Diego as an Organized Camp. Stuart and his wife Kelly both have graduate degrees in psychology and bring years of long-term child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested 8 to 10 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. SCHOOL PROFILE
DIVERSITY, CREATIVITY, MASTERY BALBOA SCHOOL EMBRACES THE QUALITIES NEEDED TO SUCCEED IN TODAY’S WORLD by LIZ ONUFER | photos provided by Balboa School
P
reparing students for the 21st century requires an education that embraces more than academic achievement. The ability to work with diverse people and to think creatively are essential to success in today’s world. Balboa School embraces this in their core values – diversity, creativity, and mastery – and is committed to helping young men and women succeed in school and far beyond. Serving students in 1st through 12th grade, the small size, individual attention, and excellent teachers set Balboa School apart from other schools. The atmosphere can best be described as “a small community,” explained Natalie C. Addleson, the vice principal. The teachers know each student personally and “get to know their strengths and weaknesses,” Ms. Addleson said. With these one-on-one relationships, teachers serve not just as the instructors but as mentors to their students. This fosters an environment where students look forward to going to school. For juniors and seniors, the personalized attention also includes career and college counseling and SAT support. The students have a long list of college acceptance letters, including the University of California Berkeley and many other prestigious schools. Balboa School is Western Association of Schools and Colleges-accredited and a member of the College Board, and the majority of courses are approved by the University of California’s A-G system. The student body represents a wide demographic, hailing from eight different countries. “We are an international school where differences among people are appreciated and valued,” Ms. Addleson said. “Civility is a major theme in the program.” One valedictorian explained it this way at graduation: “From day one, I noticed that there was no popularity scale at Balboa School. Everyone was much more willing to speak their minds.” With the recent opening of the campus in downtown Escondido across the street from the California Center for the Arts, students have many opportunities for cultural excursions. The students can also participate in the athletic program, which includes volleyball, cross country, and basketball. The school is NCAA-certified so students are able to qualify for athletic scholarships. Pairing the diverse student body with individualized attention and a motivating environment, Balboa School has helped students achieve academic success beyond traditional expectations. “We create positive learning experiences that encourage students to actively engage with the curriculum and work towards mastery of academic goals,” Ms. Addleson said. ¢ 66 • 92127MAGAZINE.COM • March | April 2018

HIGHER GOALS HIGHER GOALS HIGHER GOALS REHAN CHINOY AND KEVIN SALCEDA MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND SHARE THEIR LOVE OF SOCCER THROUGH KICKS4KIDS by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo by Spark Photography
P
laying soccer is a passion for Scripps Ranch resident Rehan Chinoy and 4S Ranch resident Kevin Salceda. They have been playing the sport since they were four years old and are grateful for the many opportunities soccer has afforded them, both on and off the field. Using this passion for soccer, Rehan and Kevin founded Kicks4Kids, an organization whose mission is to collect and deliver used, but functional, sports equipment to less fortunate children in San Diego and around the world. “During my junior year of high school, I interned with Yalla San Diego. This group combines the promise of education and the passion of soccer to inspire refugee and immigrant youth to achieve a college education. In talking with Kevin, we came up with the idea of getting used cleats for the kids after realizing how fast some of our soccer teammates were going through shiny new cleats,” explained Rehan. Their first Kicks4Kids donation drive was for Yalla San Diego and it was a huge success.
The group’s second equipment drive benefited the American Haitian Foundation. Kicks4Kids collected more than 100 pairs of cleats and more than 200 jerseys. “The most rewarding part of founding this organization is seeing the smiles of the kids wearing the equipment we collected,” stated Kevin. Rehan agrees. “When we saw the kids at Yalla get new shoes and when we were sent pictures of kids in Haiti with their new gear, we felt that through a simple act, we made a difference,” said Rehan. Kicks4Kids continues to conduct local drives with soccer clubs in San Diego. According to Kevin, one of their next big projects is to hold an equipment drive for children in Columbia. Rehan and Kevin attend Del Norte High School and enjoy the many academic, athletic, and extracurricular opportunities at the school. English literature, calculus, and U.S. history are among Rehan’s favorite subjects, as he loves the analytical problem-solving skills required in math, but also enjoys expressing his creativity through
liberal arts. He is a voracious reader and loves listening to music and going to concerts. Kevin’s favorite subjects at Del Norte are math, chemistry, and physics. He also loves being outdoors, enjoys hiking and exploring, and is actively involved in the youth group at St. Michael’s Church. Currently, Kicks4Kids has about 20 to 30 members who help with hosting drives, itemizing the collected gear, and delivering the equipment. For more information about Kicks4Kids and ways to become involved, email dnhskicks4kids@gmail.com. ¢

t Boulder OMS, patient comfort and care are at the core of the practice. “Dr. Albert Lin and Dr. Robert Gramins take the time to understand each patient’s needs and offer services that deliver optimal results. We treat each patient in a relaxed and caring environment and utilize the latest techniques and treatment options,” explained Kelly Zielinski, marketing and public relations manager for Boulder OMS. Originally founded in 1972, Boulder OMS is the oldest and most established oral and facial surgery practice in the greater Poway area. With a track record of exceptional results and the goal of being the most trusted and respected oral and maxillofacial surgery practice in San Diego, Dr. Lin and Dr. Gramins are committed to providing the highest standards of care. Boulder OMS treats a wide range of patients, from preteens to older adults and everyone in between. The practice specializes in wisdom tooth extraction, dental implants, facial trauma, oral pathology, corrective jaw surgery, Botox and fillers, and dental alveolar surgery. “Our doctors spent an additional four years in school for their oral and maxillofacial surgery residency. This makes them uniquely qualified to perform surgery on the face and in the mouth,” stated Zielinski. Both Dr. Lin and
Dr. Gramins are Fellows of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and are board certified as Diplomates by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. They are also among a select group of oral and maxillofacial surgeons that are licensed to perform facial cosmetic surgery in the state of California. Boulder OMS is an accredited surgery center and adheres to strict guidelines for safety and patient care as set forth by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). Dr. Lin and Dr. Gramins voluntarily had the practice accredited by the AAAHC, a process which includes thorough onsite reviews of policies and practices by expert surveyors every two years. According to Zielinski, this is the highest level of certification and ensures that Boulder OMS is at the forefront of technology, safety, and patient care. Dr. Lin and Dr. Gramins are also dedicated to giving back to the community. They are the oral and facial surgeons to the San Diego Gulls and actively volunteer their skills and expertise to the Oral Cancer Foundation, Las Patronas, The Ronald McDonald House, and other local charities. nside Tease Salon Studios, clients are welcomed to a chic, welcoming, and relaxing culture in the heart of Rancho Peñasquitos. This is a custom-designed hybrid salon featuring four private suites, combined with four open area styling stations. Beth Sczempka is the owner and manager and holds 38 years of experience in the salon business. She launched the studio over seven years ago and explained, “I wanted to give experienced stylists a place to express their artistic flair without the usual constrictions of other salons.” The six highly skilled stylists stay in touch with the latest trends in both cuts and color. They encourage each other’s creativity in an upbeat environment that Beth revealed they enjoy being in daily. “We all have never felt more at home in a work environment than this one,” shared Beth. “We have a lot of laughs, we take care of each other, and we share a sisterhood that is rare to find.” The stylists’ sisterhood also carries over to their clients. Their ability to connect with clients and help them find that perfect look is a true gift each of these women share. And their services aren’t limited to just hair appointments. Their manicurist has over 20 years in the business and offers a relaxing experience in her private suite. Among Deana’s many

The salon also offers hair care products, such as Pureology and Redken, and a boutique with beautiful jewelry and seasonal scarves where you’ll find the prices perfect for a gift or for yourself. Tease Salon Studios gives back as a reflection of each woman’s passion to help increase confidence and wellbeing in others. They’ve held Cut-A-Thons for various charities, helped Girl Scout troops earn badges, donated their skills for special needs proms, educated women in Mexico and Cambodia, and even raised the money and then built a home in Mexico for a family in need. Heart Screening Event At Del Norte
O
n Jan. 28, Del Norte High School hosted an event which allowed teens to be trained in hands-only CPR, get an EKG analyzed by a cardiologist, and even receive a free echocardiogram if requested by the doctor. Hundreds of people flocked to the school to take advantage of this amazing opportunity – which was all free. The Eric Paredes Save a Life Foundation began events like these after Eric Paredes, a sophomore wrestler at Steele Canyon High School, became a victim of sudden cardiac arrest. His parents started the Save a Life Foundation to prevent this tragedy from happening to other teens, and the foundation sponsors free screening
events at schools across San Diego County. The Community Service Club, led by co-presidents Emi and Jack Iribarren, brought this event to Del Norte for the first time. Emi discovered the foundation while volunteering at the Westview High School event two years ago. “We really value community service because it is a great way to help out meaningful causes around town,” she said. “The event is a great opportunity for Del Norte students because it is so convenient and free!” The screening attracted a crowd due to its publicity; social media and local magazines both helped spread the word. “Mr. Mizel, the DNHS principal, and Mike Giami,

Thanks to the hard work of the foundation and club as well as the publicity of the screening, it discovered four people with heart conditions. Since an EKG is not a part of an annual physical, you can get your teen screened at the next heart screening event, which is on March 25 at Torrey Pines High School, or you can find more information at www.epsavealife.org. ¢

Children for Children 5K
LOCAL LEADER ORGANIZES ANNUAL RACE TO PROMOTE YOUTH SPORTS
LOOK YOUR BEST Named Best Cosmetic Surgeon
C
hildren for Children 5K returns Saturday, April 28 this year at Lake Hodges. This local race is directed by a standout local leader – 14-year-old 92127 resident Natasha Preece. Despite her age, she is a veteran race director and is now in her fourth year organizing Children for Children 5K. Natasha was inspired after volunteering at a YMCA event and seeing how happy other kids were playing sports. Already an avid runner, she decided to plan a 5K run – complete with registration, sponsors, and medals – to benefit Kids in the Game, a nonprofit organization that gives grants to low-income children who want to play a one-season sport. Proceeds from the “Natasha was inspired after first three Children volunteering at a YMCA event for Children 5K races have helped more than and seeing how happy other 100 children over the years. kids were playing sports.” Though they accept some help from adults, Children for Children 5K is driven and executed by Natasha and her friends. They handle all the calls and registration themselves, learning everything from organizing vendors to arranging liability insurance. The Lake Hodges course is a winding combination of dirt trail, switchbacks, and fire road, with aid and water stations at the start, halfway point, and finish. Packet pickup is from 7 to 7:45 a.m. and the race begins at 8 a.m. All finishers receive a cool medal, with additional awards for overall and age group firsts, seconds, and thirds. All ages are welcome, and registration is now open. Volunteers are also welcome, whether individuals, teams, or school or community groups. Learn more at www.childrenforchildren5k.org. ¢

R E A L E S TAT E W AT C H
Confusion Slowing the Local Market by SCOTT VOAK
W
hile San Diego as a whole is experiencing a slight slowdown in real estate activity (a reduction of 4.5% in sales year-over-year), the North County inland market (Poway Unified School District, Scripps Ranch, and Mira Mesa) is seeing a much more pronounced lull in the market to start 2018 (a 14.1% reduction). I believe there are three main reasons for this, and all of them revolve around future uncertainty. The first two affect the upper end market throughout the county. Those factors are the new tax law and recent volatility in the stock market and interest rates. We know the new tax law is going to hurt California homeowners, but until people meet with their accountants to prepare 2017 taxes, they probably won’t have a firm idea of how much it will impact them. This type of uncertainty causes people to become conservative and put off major purchases like housing. Hopefully, once people know what the increase will be next year, they will be more comfortable making a move in the housing market. You can count on the fact that the stock market is going to be more volatile and interest rates are generally going to move up. While that is not helpful, the one thing you can do if you are considering a home purchase is get your down payment out of the stock market. There’s nothing worse than finding your dream home on Sunday and watching
your down payment disappear on Monday if the market falls. The third area of uncertainty affects us more in PUSD. That is the uncertainty surrounding the attempted takeover of Qualcomm by Broadcom. Poway School District is a magnet for engineers who want their kids to get a good education. Two years ago, when there was an announced layoff at Qualcomm, the local housing market really slowed down until layoff notices went out, and as soon as people knew they still had jobs, the market took off. I have talked to several of my Qualcomm clients and they are indeed sitting on the sidelines until the situation is resolved. Given that uncertainty over taxes will likely last into April and the Qualcomm situation may take another 30 to 60 days to resolve itself (as of this writing), I anticipate a slower market through March and then a very strong May through July. ¢
